Youth sailing program produces 16 new sailors

Cedar Island Yacht Club (CIYC) is becoming known across Ontario for its youth sailing program.

“We have been touted as one of the most successful sailing schools in Southern Ontario,” said Paul Cairoli, youth sailing chairman for CIYC, to parents and sailors at the club Friday afternoon.

“What an outstanding week this was,” he said, prior to instructors handing out certificates and awards.

The 16 new young sailors, ages 8 to 14, from across Essex County and as far away as Toronto, completed one of the four programs being offered this summer in the CANsail program which recognizes sailing achievements in levels 1-4, starting with the learn-tosail up to the racing level.

A total of 72 students will get the chance to learn sailing skills this summer using one of a dozen RS Quba sailboats owned by the club. They can hold two to three youth with a main sail and jib.

Cairoli said students

learn everything from point of sail to rules of the road, rigging and de-rigging the boat and folding up sails.

“The CANsail programming means lots of time on the water in a safe, fun and active learning environment,” he said

The club had received Trillium funding the previous year to help boost the sailing program, which is now in its fifth season and is actually waitlisted.

Cairoli says they are proud to have one of their own local sailors, Bryanna Pearce, who started in the program five years ago, now training to be their first “home-grown” sailing instructor.

Pearce, 15, from Harrow, is also the recipient of the club’s Bryan Stewart award.

Cairoli says they plan to continue to grow the youth sailing program locally and to promote the sport of sailing to “keep it going” as a fun-for-thewhole-family activity.

Mural artists get together for official opening of Kingsville Art Walk

The downtown murals of Kingsville were on full display on July 15 as the inaugural Kingsville Art Walk took place. The walk has come about through a partnership between Federal Development Ontario, Southwest Ontario Tourism, TRUE Kingsville, the Town of Kingsville and the Arts Society of Kingsville (ASK).

Ten artists completed 12 pieces for the public to enjoy, and an entire list of the artists’ names along with the exact locations of their creations can be found at artssociety ofkingsville.ca.

Laura Lucier, the Chair of ASK, indicated that the murals would serve as a source of pride for the town and would also be regarded as a tourist attraction for visitors to

Kingsville.

“The murals highlight several features of our community,” she said, “the real pillars of Kingsville.”

Ann Ducharme, one of the 10 artists on display, has two murals on Main Street East.

“It’s always an honour for an artist to be chosen to be in a public exposure and to be a part of a celebration of what Kingsville is all about,” she said. “My one piece about monarchs and milkweed is typical of what we get to experience every summer. The piece celebrates colour, and you can’t get more colourful than monarchs and milkweed flowers.”

TRUE Kingsville, a recently formed non-profit

organization, was able to secure a $100,000 Tourism Relief Fund grant to promote tourism in Kingsville through art, and through this funding the Art Walk has materialized.

ASK has a brochure available at the Carnegie Arts and Visitor Centre for those that are interested in a self-guided tour, while those that would prefer a guided tour can arrange to have a volunteer from the Arts Centre provide insight into the downtown pieces of art through a walk on Division and Main streets.

The murals will hang for three years and the intention is that more mu-

rals will be added in the upcoming years for all to enjoy.

Kiana Dobson celebrating pageant win

Kingsville’s Kiana Dobson has been crowned Miss Swimsuit USA International after a pageant in Toronto on July 8 weekend.

The down-to-earth 20-year-old is thrilled to have won the competition, which also has a model search component, leading to lots of opportunities.

Kiana was runner-up in the same pageant last year and traveled to Mexico to represent Canada later in 2022.

“That was a great experience,” she says. “I’m hoping this year will be even better.”

Thanks to a standout pageant July 8 weekend, she is the 2023 title holder and with that comes some responsibilities, but she says she’s up for the task.

“I’m ready to fulfill my duties as Miss Swimsuit USA International Canada,” she added.

Some of those responsibilities include helping to promote pageant sponsors on social media and

at live events. Many of the sponsors are clothing companies and fashion designers.

When she arrives in Mexico later this year for the World Finals, her sash will say Kingsville on it, to honour her Kingsville roots.

“I want to represent my hometown proudly,” she says.

The graduate of Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School is now in her fourth year at the University of Windsor where she’s studying business administration with a scpecialty in marketing.

As for the future, Kiana

is concentrating on her education with an eye on the pageant, dance and modeling scene.

“I really want to focus on my education,” she says. “My big dream is to find a way to connect my education with music and the arts.”

Kiana grew up in a musical family and says that environment has helped her flourish when networking with different people around the world in varying environments.

“My parents are my biggest supporters,” she says, referring to her mom and dad, Marita and Tim Dobson.

She is a captain with the

Windsor Express Dance Team, performing at all home games of the Windsor Express as well as out in the community.

She also works as the dance specialist for Cardinal Carter Middle School and Cardinal Carter Secondary School.

Part of her work as the 2023 winner is trying to get more Canadians involved in the pageant and growing it worldwide, a task she is looking forward to.

Wheatley artist creates historical statue of Tecumseh

A grant from the Windsor-Essex Community Foundation made it pos-

sible for the Town of Tecumseh to unveil a statue of Chief Tecumseh at their Lakewood Park on Mon-

Pet of the Week

day, July 3.

Along with Tecumseh’s descendants, local dignitaries and First Na-

tions officials, the artist responsible for the work — Heather Mallaby of Wheatley — stood proudly beside her work.

Mallaby was excited to be commissioned for the work and says it takes a lot more work than people might imagine.

“I started sketching in January, doing lots of research, then the carving took about three weeks,” she told the Sun last week. “Drawing is one of the main points.”

She says that a small drawing on graph paper must then be converted to the life-size carving through mathematical calculations to make sure the proportions are accurate.

Mallaby says every big work starts with a sketch and, for this particular creation, she researched as many depictions of the historic chief as she could.

“I settled on the famous one of him wearing the red hat,” she said. “I put him in traditional buckskin with a traditional fringe.”

As an artist, Mallaby said she wanted to make sure that her depiction of Tecumseh was accurate.

“There’s a lot of work in being correct,” she said. “It was the most public work I’ve ever done. I’m quite proud of it.”

Mallaby says the orig-

Bank n otes

inal plan was for her to carve on-site at Lakewood Park, creating the statue from an old poplar tree, but once the tree was cut, they discovered a lot of rot in the middle.

So she took a large log from the top of the tree and carved the chief from that back at her shop, then returned to Lakewood to mount it on the remaining tree stump, which she also carved to match her work, which included a Three Fires Confederacy image.

The six-foot tall statue (plus base) is Tecumseh standing in full buckskin, holding a handful of twigs and wearing a wampum belt across his shoulder — both of which have historical significance.

One of Tecumseh’s famous quotes, “A single twig breaks, but the bundle of twigs is strong,” was the basis for the twigs in his hand.

On July 3, a sunrise ceremony was held by the descendants of Tecumseh

and Heather was invited to take part as the artist who created the work.

Patricia Shawnoo, a direct descendent of Tecumseh, was on hand and was very pleased with the artwork.

A public dedication followed later in the day, which also included the Warden of Essex County, Hilda MacDonald.

“Heather’s work is so intricate,” said MacDonald. “It’s really incredible. We’re proud to know her and happy to be able to brag about her.”

Mallaby says the support from the Indigenous community and the municipality made the challenge much easier.

She credits Tecumseh’s Director of Community and Recreation Services, Beth Gignac, with being instrumental in arranging the carving — a process that began late last summer.

Mallaby’s business, Erie Treasures Chainsaw Art, is located at 1422 Mersea Road 7.

TIGGER

Hi I’m Tigger, or Tiggy, or Tig, whichever you prefer, I like them all! I’m a mature, strong, independant woman who don’t need no other dogs in the home... please. I don’t mind other dogs so long as they don’t bug me, I would just prefer not to be around them, I like to do my own thing. I love people though! I like making friends with humans so so very much that I give them love nibbles on their hands and try and jump up and give them hugs. I am obsessed with my toys, particularly my soft squeaky ones and I have a hard time sharing sometimes and can get a little grabby trying to get you to toss them quicker - due to this I am not recommended in homes where little hands are present. I really enjoy my walks and using my nose - so much so that I may push open doors to try and go for said walk. When you join me for a walk, I hope you dont expect a leisurely stroll as I’m a lady on a mission and I like to power walk - I been working on my fitness!

If some of these tiger stripes don’t throw you off and you think we could be pals, please apply to adopt me!

Around town ... as they said in the old days

My old boss — the late Tony Duncan — once had a regular column in the Leamington Post called Around Town and it was always interesting — outlining things he was seeing throughout the area and some of the people involved in doing things for others.

This week’s column is dedicated to the man who gave me my start in the newspaper business almost 40 years ago now, as I make a feeble attempt to recreate that work.

Here goes … Kudos to the Wheatley Fish Festival Committee who pulled off another great event on the Canada Day weekend. Their hard work and dedication brought smiles to the faces of many.

The same goes for the Southwest Outdoors Club who held their annual kids fishing derby at Wheatley Harbour. It’s always good to see smiles on kids’ faces.

I’m hearing talks are underway to celebrate Leamington’s 150th birthday in fine fashion next summer. Let’s hope there will be bed races.

Kingsville’s Open Streets are in full swing and Cottam will hold an Open Streets this year

for the first time on July 22. Those are always great events.

One of Kingsville’s most popular citizens, Joe Colasanti, was featured in our most recent edition of Southpoint Living Magazine that came out a couple of weeks ago. Paul Forman did an excellent job interviewing Joe and conveying the story of how his hard work and community spirit has had such an effect on the community. Joe stopped at the office last week and brought us some fresh Colasanti’s donuts and was quick to give credit to his long-time companion Vera Wilkins, who has been his rock these past several years, supporting him in everything he does.

Although I was out of the office, former publisher of the Leamington Post and Shopper and another old boss of mine, Don Gage, also stopped in to see us. Coincidentally, Don and Joe Colasanti are longtime friends who have a very unique relationship. He didn’t bring donuts.

I’ll be spending this coming Saturday honouring my late friend Greg “Muttley” Sellon at a special golf outing in his memory. He passed away last

November at the Hospice and his two sons Adam and Nathan, his wife Jill, along with his brothers Brian and Ron, are organizing the event with any proceeds going to hospice on Greg’s behalf. He was a great friend and teammate since we were teens and I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of people I haven’t seen in awhile and of course, swinging the clubs and chasing errant balls all over everyone else’s fairway.

Looks like a couple of establishments opening up in the area, with Eddie’s Sports Bar getting close to completion at the old A-1 (Lee’s Garden for us old people) location. Joe’s Bar is also soon to open in Wheatley at the old Fudd’s Mini Mart spot. I’m hearing it’s the late Joe Pinch’s boys paying homage to their dad by naming their bar after him.

The Hogs for Hospice 5050 raffle is over $90,000 as I write this column and it continues to grow. I expect it’ll be another giant sum like last summer’s draw. One of Leamington’s premier events just keeps getting better. If you’ve not ventured down to Seacliff Park in previous years, be sure to check it out. Even if you’re

1938 “coffee cup” Cadillac

On a recent visit with Scott Holland (a.k.a. “Mister Leamington”) we had coffee while we tossed around some ideas for next year when Leamington will be turning 150 years old.

I could not help but notice that Scott’s coffee cup had a colourful picture of a classic car. Upon closer inspection, I realized it is

RIB’S RAMBLINGS

not a concert-goer, the events going on in the daytime are always interesting to watch.

The Leamington Tomato has been a hot topic the past couple of years as council wrestles with the decision on what to do with the Leamington landmark. I’m guessing it won’t be a tourist booth anymore, and may not even remain at its current location, but I trust it will be preserved in some way for future generations to see. It was built the year I was born and it’s one of my first memories of uptown Leamington — along with the creaky floors at the Metropolitan and the pizza at the Mill Bar.

Speaking of landmarks, those of us who went to LDSS may soon notice a vacancy near the back of the old school property as the Squadron 535 air cadets prepare to move that historic cadet building from the old high school property to the fairgrounds. It should be an interesting story when all is said and done.

In the “too bad people can’t leave some of the good things alone” department, someone has damaged/destroyed the

Little Free Libraries at Seacliff Park and the Leamington Marina. Concerned citizens are not happy as they came to appreciate those unique book exchange kiosks throughout town. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Spent about an hour at the 1978 LDSS grad 45th reunion dinner on Saturday night, seeing a lot of faces I had not seen in 40 years. One in particular, John Klemens, was an old baseball teammate of mine who now lives in Victoria, BC. John made the trek to Leamington and probably traveled the furthest of all the LDSS alumni for the event. No pitcher threw harder in Peewee house league than John did. Also chatted with Judy (Schmidt) Kroeker for a few minutes. Hadn’t seen Judy since high school and it was nice to catch up. Her parents used to own a small grocery store on Erie Street uptown.

With the Canada Day weekend behind us, we’re halfway through the year and only 22 weeks until Christmas. Happy almost holidays, everyone.

a 1938 Cadillac Sixty Special four-door sedan. The picture of the car curves up slightly at the front because of the curve of the coffee cup.

The book 50 Years of American Automobiles tells us why the car on Scott’s coffee cup deserves to be called a Sixty Special: “Square yet crisply elegant and quite

compact for a Cadillac, it stood apart with chromeedged side windows, square-back fenders, concealed running boards and a very low profile. It’s long been judged one of Detroit’s all-time great designs.”

Under the hood of this styling sensation was a flathead V-8 engine with 346 cubic inches pro-

ducing 135 horsepower when Ford had only 221 cubic inches with 85 horsepower.

The next time Scott and I get together for coffee, I’ll be asking him if

he has other coffee cups with other classic cars!

FREE SLICES FOR GRADES

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Antonino’s Pizza held their annual “Pays for A’s” program where they gave a free slice of pizza to any student who showed up with report card in hand showing an “A” or 80% in at least one subject. They also gave slices to any student with an “E” in any of the six learning criteria categories and to all students on an alternative learning plan. The new Leamington location has enjoyed a steady business since opening a few weeks ago in the old Blockbuster Video location in front of Canadian Tire. Here, a couple of the first students to arrive Monday morning were Myles Janisse, 13, and his sister Maiya, 11, both from Jack Miner Public School. Leamington franchisee Andrew Krautner handed over a slice of cheese pizza to Maiya and deluxe to her brother. SUN photo

Groovy time had by all at LDSS 45-year reunion

Some came from as far away as British Columbia and Florida to meet up with old friends, while others came across town for the same purpose as the 1978 graduating class of Leamington District Secondary School met for their 45-year reunion this past weekend.

Although the turnout wasn’t quite the same as their 40th reunion five years ago, the 45th Reunion of the 1978 LDSS graduating class was very much a success.

A Thursday night gathering at the International Hotel for their famous steak dinner attracted about 32 people looking to reminisce about those good old days.

A Friday morning golf outing at Orchard View Golf Course got things moving followed by another gathering at Cured

Craft Brewery on Friday afternoon.

The big event Saturday night at the Roma Club saw about 70 tickets sold for the dinner and dance, where plenty of memories were shared by all.

Chair of the organizing committee Brad Frederick said the weekend was a lot of fun for everyone.

“We’ve had a great time seeing so many familiar faces,” he said.

Saturday’s dinner was interrupted by a couple of dudes from the past as the Tonys — DelCiancio and DeSantis — took the floor dressed in true 1970s clothing, complete with wigs.

The pair re-enacted a phone call from the ‘70s talking about movies and music of the day, complete with vocabulary pulled straight out of 1978.

The two Tonys even name dropped some of

the more popular students of the day as part of their hilarious skit, which brought even more laughter from the crowd.

They even talked about DelCiancio’s dream to become a priest and laughed about how absurd that idea was in 1978. Those who know him, know that Father Tony has been now a priest for quite some time.

A 10-year reunion video shot in 1988 by alumnus Pat Impens played on the big screen showing many who were at that 10th reunion having a great time at the celebration.

The weekend wrapped up with a casual meet and greet at Seacliff Park on Sunday afternoon where about 30 people attended.

Frederick says conversations are already being had about the 50-year reunion in 2028.

Classic Albums Live heading to Dark Side of Moon Saturday

The Municipality of Leamington, in partnership with The Bank Theatre, will present the third concert of the Music Onthe42 Summer Concert Series, featuring Classic Albums Live Performing Pink Floyd’s album The Dark Side of the Moon on July 22.

Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live takes the greatest albums and recreates them live on stage, note for note, cut for cut, using the best musicians.

“Think of it as a recital,” said Martin. “These albums are historic and stand the test of time.”

Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic Albums Live has found success in concentrating solely on the music.

“We don’t dress up or wear any sort of costume. All our energy is put into the music. We want the performance to sound exactly like the album,” said

Martin.

With 150+ shows a year across North America, Classic Albums Live has seen massive success in performing arts centres and theatres.

“We grew while others withdrew,” said Martin, commenting on the decline of concert ticket sales. “We created something that endures and connects. These albums are sacred to people. We deliver exactly what we promote – ‘note for note, cut for cut’ accuracy.”

Opening the show at 7:30 p.m. is the multi-instrumental and multiaward nominated alternative duo from Kingsville, Fresh Breath.

Influenced by the likes of Tom Petty and Alanis Morissette, the duo is touring throughout Canada and the United States. Their latest album, ‘How

Did I Get Here’, received a FACTOR grant for Artist Development. The opening track ‘World Gone Crazy’ placed as a semi-finalist in the Canadian Independent Music Video Awards in 2022.

Classic Albums Live takes the stage at 8:30 pm.

All are welcome to attend these free, un-ticketed outdoor events.

Refreshments are available for sale at the Kinsmen Kanteen. LT-Go on-demand transit hours have been extended to 11:00 p.m. for each concert event.

Thank You

As long as emergency water restrictions remain in force, Leamington’s downtown fountain will stay dry. The fountain, a popular photo opportunity for visitors, was ordered shut off June 28 when lawn watering restrictions were imposed throughout the Union Water System.

On September 1, 1978, the fishing boat Kenteau, owned by Bill Kennedy, sank at berth in Kingsville Harbour. No clues as to why the boat sank. It took two large cranes six hours to lift the 20 ton – 20 metre boat from the bottom. kingsvillearchives@gmail.com

Providing temporary additional space for the municipal parking lot at the foot of the Leamington dock was deemed too costly by town council’s community services committee last week. Several weeks ago, council was told the parking lot space, particularly on weekend, is being taken up by motorists leaving vehicles to take the ferry to Pelee Island. The suggestion was to create more parking on the landfilled area immediately south of the lot. An engineer’s report estimated costs at $6,500 for gravel and lighting.

Two Sun Parlour food processing giants have merged. Acquisition of JL Foods from John Labatt Ltd. was announced Thursday by the H.J. Heinz Company in Pittsburgh. This effectively combines Heinz operations in Leamington with those of Omstead Foods in Wheatley. The total Heinz workforce in the community will now be in the 1,700 range, with 1,200 in Leamington and 500 in Wheatley.

Jeanette Kilderch of New York visited the Leamington Tomato Booth this past wek. She was looking for a ‘desolate’ place to camp in Southern Ontario. Kilderch could not get over how well kept up Leamington was and she could breathe so easily compared to New York. She vowed to return to the area.

The Kingsville and Gosfield South Fire Department and a variety of other municipal services were quickly put into action on Tuesday as a chemical spill occurred at the Recreation Centre on Jasperson Road. The arena was receiving a shipment of a dehumidifier when a chemical was noticed leaking from the side of the truck. The driver of the vehicle notified his employer and then immediately notified the fire department. Firefighters then sealed off access to the arena and spoke to the driver. The chemical was identified as hydrochloric acid that was awaiting delivery to a company in Windsor. The Leamington Fire Department’s specialized unit was put on stand-by. The acid was being shipped in a 45-gallon drum and only slight leakage was detected.

Last Wednesday at the Recreation Centre, the Cottam Mosquitos buzzed into town and picked up a 13-12 win over Kingsville in extra innings. Sarah Allen started on the mound for Kingsville, giving way to Philip Wilson in the fourth. Derek Walker pitched the last four innings. Cottam led 12-7 going into the final inning but Kingsville roared back with five runs to send it into extras.

The Lions Carnival opened this year’s festivities with the ever-popular pet parade last Thursday evening. Children of all ages and their parents flocked to the streets of Kingsville to catch a glimpse of this year’s participants which included such acts as a Collie Clown, 101 Dalmations and baby raccoon and yes, even Walt Disney’s new hero, the Rocketeer.

The Wheatley Lions Club Mosquitos baseball club captured their third tournament of the season this past weekend when they swept five straight games in Leamington. Wheatley beat Kingsville 13-3 on Friday night. In game two, they defeated Mississauga 8-5. In the third game, the Lions Club defeated London 14-0, setting up a semi-final match-up against Sarnia, winning handily 22-10. In the championship final the locals faced Milton. Thomas Grubb tossed the first five innings, allowing one run on three this. He left the game with the teams tied 1-1. Doug Vandecaveye took over on the mound as his teammates put the game away in the last half of the sixth. Richie Segedin led off with a single, stole second and rode home on Vandecaveye’s double. Shawn Mather and Jeremy Tiborcz added base hits to the attack for a final score 4-2 for Wheatley. Vandecaveye was named tournament MVP.

Rev. Rodrigo Emilio Solano-Quesnel

Reverend Rodrigo (“Rod”) Emilio Solano-Quesnel died suddenly at age 42 in a traffic accident early on the morning of Tuesday, July 11, 2023. His life partner Sarah Wert was with him at the time of the accident and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Rod was born in Mexico City on February 27, 1981 to Leticia Rosana Quesnel and Luis Pastor Solano Flores. In 1991, he moved to Canada, settling into a new life in London, Ontario, with his father and step-mother Martha Patricia Rosas Arellano and later, Patty’s niece Navil Astrid.

While attending Carleton University he was introduced to Unitarian Universalism, a religion that resonated strongly with him. He became an active member of First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa and began feeling called to Unitarian Universalist ministry. After attending seminary at the Montreal School of Theology (affiliated with McGill University), Rev. Solano-Quesnel served as Intern Minister at First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto. It was also in Toronto that Rod met his sweetheart Sarah Wert. Following his internship, Rod and Sarah joined Neighbourhood Unitarian Universalist Congregation (NUUC), also in Toronto, which ordained him in 2016.

Rev. Rod then served as the half-time Developmental Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ottawa for two years, alternating weeks between both Toronto and Ottawa, and calling both places home. Rod moved to Leamington in Essex County in 2018, where he served as the settled minister of the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church of Olinda from August 2018 to July 2023. Rod was a boundlessly loving human being

who nurtured positive change in the lives, communities, and world which he was – and is – part of. He listened thoughtfully to all who sought his ear, was intensely intentional in his actions, and exuded both childlike joy and understanding beyond his years. Rod was very human and far from perfect, but he was divine in his embodiment of love, grace, and connection. Rod was relentlessly himself and passionately committed to others. He will be profoundly, profoundly missed.

Rod is survived by his partner Sarah Wert, his mother Leticia, his father Pastor and step-mother Patricia, and many other loving relatives.

Visitation and the funeral for Rev. Rod will be held at the Reid Funeral Home, 14 Russell Street, Leamington, ON (519-326-2631) (www.reidfuneralhome.ca). Visitation hours will be on Thursday, July 20 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m.

The funeral will be held on Friday, July 21 at 11:00 a.m. There will be an option to attend virtually. A reception and light lunch will follow in the same building. There will be opportunities during the reception to share reflections and memories of Rod.

The graveside committal ceremony will take place following the reception, and a procession will head from Reid Funeral Home to Graceland Universalist Cemetery, which is right across from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Olinda, 2953 Olinda Side Road, Ruthven, ON N0P 2G0.

There will be a separate memorial service or celebration of life for Rod in Toronto at the end of the summer, which will serve as an alternative option for honouring Rod. This will also include an option for attending virtually.

Rod’s partner Sarah Wert welcomes flowers as well as donations, which can be made by cheque or by e-transfer, to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Olinda.

Southpoint Alumni golf tournament attracts 188

The Southpoint Alumni Group held their 12th annual golf tournament on Wednesday, July 12 under overcast skies and a cool breeze at Erie Shores Golf Course.

Depsite the rains from the previous day, the course was in perfect playing shape.

A total of 188 golfers took part in the tournament, which is the major fundraiser for the Southpoint Alumni, which is comprised of former board members of Southpoint Minor Hockey and

other interested members who want to support the legacy of the organization.

Each year, the group makes a financial commitment to Southpoint Minor Hockey to allow them to reduce the registration costs for the development program participants and new registrants to minor hockey.

Again this year, the group will be supporting first year referees to help offset their cost of starting up. They will also be helping the sys-

tem with clinics for the house league this coming season.

The winning team of Terry Symons, Garry Symons, Mike Jadischke, and Pete Driedger shot a score of 56, which is 15 under par.

The low mixed group was Neil and Lisa Sawatzy, and Lonnie and Brenda Rickert with 63 at -8.

The low ladies group was Chantal Serrao, Ashley Bailey, Kim Grubb, & Jocelyn Wilkinson with a 76 for +4.

Unico Ladies Invitational at Erie Shores course

On July 11, Erie Shores Golf Course hosted the bi-annually held 2023 Unico Ladies Invitational.

After a four-year wait due to COVID restrictions, 148 ladies from as far away as Florida participated in this year’s Unico-sponsored golf tournament at Erie Shores.

As Erie Shores is without a club house, this year’s tournament went to the Best Western for their meal and prizes.

The generosity of the sponsors, volunteers and players allows the group to make a donation to the Erie Shores Campus of Hospice and the Salvation Army Food Bank.

Unico gave each player a gift of a throw.
