Community welcomes champs with parade

The Leamington Flyers planned a parade on Saturday, May 13 in Leamington and were pleased by the fan turnout along the route and at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre.

With a few intermittent raindrops providing the only small challenge, the team hopped aboard the Leamington Fire ladder truck 143 and cruised from the town hall on Erie North to the arena, along with about a dozen other vehicles carrying coaching staff, management and volunteers.

When the caravan turned onto Sherk Street, the crowd of about 500 waiting near the arena erupted in chants of “Go Flyers Go”.

A further crowd of about the same number

entrance to greet the 2023 Sutherland Cup champions.

The Flyers had beaten the Stratford Warriors on Tuesday, May 9 in Stratford in game seven to take their first-ever Sutherland Cup.

Hotdogs, chips and drinks were handed out to anyone in attendance and the Flyers players spent a considerable amount of time posing for photos with fans and giving autographs.

Inside the complex, everyone gathered for some speeches, given by Mayor Hilda MacDonald, MP Dave Epp and Flyers management.

General Manager Justin Solcz got emotional when talking about the the players and the way they responded when called upon.

guys and the amount of work you guys put in,” he said. “We held you to a high standard and you guys delivered. You are champions and you deserve it.”

Solcz said they could not have done it without the numerous volunteers involved with the team.

“The amount of people that support us is unbelievable,” he added.

Head Coach Dale Mitchell was equally as thankful for the volunteers, the fans and the commitment by his players and staff.

Flyers’ long-time public address announcer John Hammond — who had a

large hand in organizing the event — told the players how he felt about the team.

“This is the best hockey team I’ve ever seen come out of Leamington,” he said. “Each and every one of you will have a great future.”

KEEPING THEIR EYES OPEN

Thousands of birding enthusiasts made their way to Point Pelee National Park last week as the summer-like weather made for some great birding conditions. The Festival of Birds is well into its third week and throngs of people have gathered to observe the spring bird migration at many of our local hotspots. Recently engaged couple Jane and Rob of Toronto spent three days in the area last week, crossing some great sightings off their list. In particular, they were looking to record a sighting of the Cerulean Warbler and they were able to check that off on Friday morning. Jane and Rob have been casually birding for about 10 years, but have just started seriously getting into the hobby over the past three or four years. They said they’ve enjoyed speaking to other birders along the trails and learning from them. The Festival of Birds runs until May 22. SUN photo

SHIP BECOMING COMMON SIGHT

The Viking Octantis continues to make regular visits to the area as the Great Lakes cruise ship begins its spring/summer sailing season. On Wednesday, May 10 the Octantis was anchored off Point Pelee National Park, allowing passengers to partake in shore excursions within the park via Zodiac trips to the beach. They were then bused to various locations within Point Pelee to explore the trails and forests. Here, a Zodiac filled with passengers arrives at Northwest Beach on May 10, with the Octantis in the background. The ship headed east and was traversing the Welland Canal on Thursday. SUN photo

VOLUNTEERS MAKE FOR SUCCESSFUL EVENT

As with any big event, the recent Erie Shores Health Foundation Run and Roll takes a large group of dedicated volunteers to make the event the success that it is. Along with numerous generous sponsors, over 700 participants and a dedicated event committee, the volunteers who help in so many ways are invaluable to an organization such as ESHF. After all the runners, walkers and cyclists were finished with their events, the volunteers and committee members gathered for a group photo on Sunday, May 7. While some pledges are still coming in for the event, the preliminary net total raised was $130,000. All proceeds will benefit The Hospice, Erie Shores Campus.

First time in Leamington for Renaissance Festival

It was a weekend filled with medieval-inspired events including sword fights, archery, axe throwing, jousting with Knights in full armour on Percheron horses and more at Leamington Fairgrounds for the first annual Renaissance Festival.

Talking Over Pizza helps Crime Stoppers

It was another successful weekend of fundraising and “talking over pizza.”

Mike and Deanna Diab partnered with Leamington’s Domino’s Pizza owner Zubaer Parvez to initiate another Talking Over Pizza after a successful fundraiser in 2021. This time, the aim was to raise funds and awareness for Crime Stoppers.

“We want the public to know it (Crime Stoppers) is totally publicly funded,” Diab said at Domino’s Pizza Sunday after-

noon, May 14.

The local couple has been responsible for spearheading several successful fundraisers in the past, helping other charities such as The Bridge Youth Resource Centre and the annual Talking Over Turkey event.

Diab credited the local Domino’s owner Zubaer Parvez and his generosity for wanting to giving back to the community.

Ten per cent of all sales Saturday and Sunday were earmarked for Crime Stoppers, Diab said.

Those visiting the Crime Stoppers booth inside the store were also given a ticket for a chance at a prize worth $75 that included a $25 gift card to Starbucks and a foursome to play at Kingsville Golf & Country Club, he said.

Crime Stoppers is a charitable program that allows members of the community an opportunity to provide anonymous information to help police solve crime by providing tips which can earn you cash if leading to an arrest, with no court appearance and remaining anonymous.

Bringing back something old in a new way was the idea of Jen Robinson of the Leamington District Agricultural Society. She said she had seen an advertisement for the Dorchester Renaissance Festival and thought that “nothing like that had been done around here for a very long time, so I thought, let’s try something new.”

A crowd favourite was to see the trained Knights of Valour suit

up in full body armour mount their horses holding a wooden lance in one hand and reins in the other while trying to dismount their opponent from their horse.

As the knights went charging at each other, their lance would strike the opponent’s armour, breaking off in several directions and looking just like a scene out of the movie A Knight’s Tale starring Heath Ledger.

Robinson sees this first event as a building year.

“We have a lot of suggestions for next year,” she said. “We hope to keep building on it and give people something to look forward to.”

Robinson said the Knights of Valour also reached out ahead of the two-day event to of-

fer area school children a chance for an educational field trip and to see first-hand what it was actually like in medieval times.

“It is part of the Grade 4-5 curriculum. We had grade school kids come out, home school kids, and even some high school students,” she said of the three days prior to the festival.

Gate price of $25 included access to shows and events, including a birds of prey demonstration, Kobbler J, Zoltan the Adequate, jousting tournament, artisans, merchants and a food booth.

The Leamington District Agricultural Society will hold its next event – the Leamington Fair – May 25-28. The society is also celebrating its 175th year.

No playoff teams in Canada? Pity...

It’s hard to believe when the Stanley Cup playoffs began all three Canadian teams would be sitting on the outside looking.

Yet here we are with the Jets, Leafs and Oilers all gone from this year’s chase for Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Winnipeg was the least expected to do well of the three Canadian teams and had a couple of great games against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, but ultimately fell in the series, prompting a possible restructure of their core players.

Next up we have the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As a long-frustrated Leafs fan, I can remember being disappointed in 1976 when the Kate Smith phenomenon overtook Coach Red Kelly’s pyramid power as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Leafs in the second round.

If you don’t remember that pyramid scheme, look it up. Kelly devised his pyramid good luck charm and I bought into it hook, line and sinker. I remember making a pyramid out of tinfoil and setting it down near the TV. At first it seemed to be working as the Leafs stormed back from a 2-0 game deficit to extend the series to seven games, but the Kate Smith factor outshone the pyramids and the Flyers beat the Leafs on the strength of five unanswered second period goals and a 7-3 final score.

I remember being disappointed when Wayne Gretzky’s missed call on a high stick in 1993 led to a Los Angeles Kings game seven victory too. A win there would have put the Leafs and Habs in the final for the first time in many years.

Now barring a complete realignment, the Habs and Leafs

An ode to Lionel Richie

FLASHBACK RADIO with Chuck Reynolds

While watching American Idol last Sunday night, I noticed that Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran had temporarily replaced Lionel Richie and Katy Perry as judges on the show. Richie and Perry, of course, were the two main acts performing for the Royal Party celebration attended by some 20,000 people in London, England, later that same night after the King’s Coronation.

Both very talented performers, for this historical show Richie sang his Commodores’ ballad “Easy” and then livened things up with his solo dance party hit “All

Night Long”, while Perry sang “Roar” and dedicated her performance of “Firework” to King Charles.

Back here in North America, I’ve always been a big fan of Lionel Richie and the Commodores since the mid-’70s and have very fond memories of them when I got my first real club experience of spinning records as a DJ in the summer of 1977 at the Mercury Club in downtown Toronto.

At the time, I was playing their current biggest hits, “Just to Be Close to You”, “Easy” and “Brick House” during those evenings I worked.

Moving on to Leamington for good in September of 1977, where I arrived at CHYR radio, I would also play the Commodores next number one hit,

will never play each other in a Stanley Cup final again.

The disappointment I felt last week when the Leafs were eliminated by the Florida Panthers was more frustration than anything.

They’d won a series over Tampa where they didn’t play their best hockey, and when Florida beat the big bad Boston Bruins, everyone assumed the Leafs had an easy road to the finals.

The problem is, you have to play the games and you have to play them right and the Maple Leafs were totally unprepared for the physical play of the Panthers.

Wash, rinse, repeat. Same old thing every year.

There are rumours that they may tear this group apart. I’m hoping they don’t but there definitely needs to be a change of some sort. I’m thinking Shel-

“Three Times A Lady”, another ballad blockbuster also written and sung by Richie in the summer of 1978.

Following that, in 1979, with two more impressive ballads written by Lionel, “Sail On” and “Still”, hitting #4 and #1, Richie would have one more top 4 hit with the Commodores in 1981 called “Oh No”.

Without Lionel Richie, the Commodores had only one more top 40 song, “Nightshift”, that reached #3 in the Spring of 1983. On the other hand, the skies opened up for Richie whose first single release, “Endless Love”, a duet with Diana Ross, was #1 for nine weeks with its incredible overall stay of 27 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 in the summer and fall of 1981.

don Keefe may be on his way out.

RIB’S RAMBLINGS

I barely got time to get over Toronto’s exit and turned my fandom toward the Oilers and poof they were gone too.

Jr. B ranks and first time winners of the Sutherland Cup.

My playoff bracket that had the Leafs and Oilers in the finals is now useless.

I hope Gary Bettman and his group of yes-men that run the NHL will be satisfied with mediocre TV ratings going forward in this year’s playoffs, because that’s what they’re going to get.

A final four of Florida, Carolina, Vegas and Dallas is the epitome of small market teams and Canadian hockey fans including this one will tune out and start watching baseball.

On to better things…

Locally I have to give a big shoutout to the Leamington Flyers, champions of Ontario

Of Lionel’s next 12 singles, four of them, including “Truly”, “All Night Long”, “Hello” and “Say You, Say Me”, all reached #1 for a grand total of 12 weeks. The other eight singles – “You Are”, “My Love”, “Running with

They played some exciting hockey this year and deserve all of the accolades that have come their way. The community parade and celebration on Saturday showed just how much the Flyers are loved in this town.

I’m hearing whispers that they may be jumping to Jr. A next season. The idea has been floating around for some time.

I remember when they moved from Jr. C to Jr. B. It seemed like a big jump at the time but they’ve had years of success at that level.

We’ll see what comes of this ‘rumour’ in the coming days and weeks.

The Night”, “Stuck on You”, “Penny Lover”, “Dancing on The Ceiling”, “Love Will Conquer All” and “Ballerina Girl”

– all finished in the Top 10 between #2 and #9. I would say American Idol is exceptionally

lucky to have singer and songwriter Lionel Richie as one of their three judges as he is, by far, the most successful contemporary artist they have ever had on their show over the years.

Ben Koop finds his 1952 Meteor

Leamington resident Ben Koop at 18 bought a gleaming black 1952 Meteor Customline two-door sedan from Noble Duff’s used car lot in Windsor in 1953 for $1,550. Ben installed a Mercury push-button radio, dual exhausts, two-inch lowering blocks, and ’53 Meteor chrome strips on the front fenders.

Ben and Marg drove to Florida on their honeymoon in 1957 in their ’52 Meteor. In 1960, Ben traded it for a truck and never saw it again until now.

A reader of Old Autos recently contacted Ben to say a friend has a 1952 Meteor worth seeing. Ben and his son Dave drove five hours across Ontario to see the car, a deep purple 1952 Meteor Customline two-door sedan with a Mercury

Rare Willow Ptarmigan spotted locally

The excitement was palpable for days after a Willow Ptarmigan was spotted near the tip of Point Pelee Naitonal Park last week.

The bird, which normally makes its home in the

Arctic Circle, was spotted at Wheatley Provincial Park the day before, which prompted Pelee birders to be on high alert.

That high alert paid off when the fowl was seen at Pelee on Tuesday, May 9.

MD BENNIE STUDENTS CREATE NEW OUTDOOR LEARNING AREA

Students at Margaret D. Bennie Public School have taken advantage of an opportunity as the removal of play equipment has been transformed into a spot for the children to learn outside. A section of the eastern yard has received mulch that was provided by the Town of Leamington, boulders have been placed with the assistance of Shilson Excavating and large stock Carolinian trees have been planted with the help of Flood’s Nursery. In-school fundraising generated the money for this new project and each class is looking forward to taking care of their assigned tree. ONTARIO AG MINISTER VISITS LEAMINGTON

Bike patrol unit hits in Leamington

To enhance community engagement and increase education about municipal by-laws, the Municipality of Leamington introduced a new By-law Enforcement Bike Patrol Unit (BPU) this week.

The BPU includes bylaw enforcement officers who have been specially trained to patrol on bicycles.

The BPU will increase officer visibility throughout the municipality and assist with engaging citizens and business owners by getting by-law enforcement officers out

of their vehicles and connecting with the public.

“We are very pleased to begin this new initiative,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “Bike patrol allows for opportunities for community engagement on the streets and gives our by-law enforcement officers access to many areas they cannot reach by vehicle like special events, parks and trails.”

The BPU will attend various special events this summer, while also patrolling nature trails and parks to provide recreational users with a

Rosina Cacciavillani

May 16, 1939 – May 11, 2023

It is with broken hearts that the family of Rosina Cacciavillani announces her peaceful passing at the age of 83 at the Erie Shores Hospice on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Beloved wife of Gino for nearly 63 years. Loving mom of Fedela Falkner, Dan (Louise) and Michael Cacciavillani. Dear grandma of Brendan (Kathleen), Evan (Kylie) and Christopher Falkner, Paul and David (Julia) Cacciavillani. Daughter of the late Ercole and Fedela Mastronardi and daughter-in-law of the late Corrado and Elvira Cacciavillani. Sister of Bruna (late Floyd) Cacciavillani and predeceased by her infant sister Fiorina. Sister-in-law of the late Sylvia Mastronardi (late Tony), the late Fenesia Noble, John Cacciavillani, Mery Savoni (late Dan). Rosie loved and was loved by her nieces and nephews, extended family and countless friends.

There was always something cooking in Mom’s kitchen, whether it was a delicious homemade meal or the sweet aroma of something baking in the oven. The freezer was stocked with a selection of everyone’s favourite cookies, squares and ice cream roll, but she was most well-known for her chiffon cake and sciadone. Beautiful flowers adorned the house and yard.

If desired, memorial donations can be made by cheque to the Erie Shores Hospice or St. Michael’s Parish.

Visitation was at the Reid Funeral Home, 14 Russell Street, Leamington (519-326-2631) on Sunday, May 14, 2023 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Visitation continued at St. Michael’s Church, 29 Elliott Street, Leamington, on Monday, May 15, 2023 from 9:30 a.m. until Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. Entombment at Erie Memorial Gardens.

THE PROJECT

music among the festivities and a Biggest Walleye Contest is being held to commemorate the opening.

The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) have selected GIP Paving Inc. (GIP) to initiate works for the Highway 3 Widening Project, from 1.2 km east of Essex County Road 23 easterly to 1.1 km east of Essex County Road 34, in Essex County (Figure 1) including the Class Environmental Assessment (EA), Detail Design, and Construction. The project will be delivered through a Design-Build-Finance (DBF) Public Private Partnership (P3) delivery model.

Works will begin in Spring 2023, subject to approvals. Additional project information and construction updates will be posted on the project website (www.hwy3essex.com). The website will be updated as the project progresses.

THE PROCESS

The Highway 3 Widening Project will be completed following MTO’s Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000). This project is categorized as a Group ‘B’ undertaking and involves the widening of 15.6 km of Highway 3, municipal road improvements, drainage improvements, illumination, and signalization. Works will build upon the previously completed Preliminary Design as documented in the 2006 Approved Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) and Preliminary Design Report (PDR) (Earth Tech Canada Inc.), as well as the 2021 TESR Addendum (GHD).

Two (2) Design and Construction Reports (DCRs) will be prepared to document the Class EA process. The DCRs will be made available for a 30-day public comment period prior to construction start. Additional notices will be published in the local newspaper at that time to advertise where the document is available for review.

Leamington’s best-known scouter, Prosser Moran, was honoured by Essex District Scouting last week when he was presented with one of the highest honours in scouting — the Silver Acorn Award. He has been synonymous with scouting here since 1940.

Many of the commercial business signs erected in town are illegal, town council has learned. And the problem is further compounded by the enactment of three bylaws by the town over the years. According to one bylaw, all pole signs are illegal, which encompasses not only the mall signage but also the hospital and many other smaller businesses.

If anyone ever doubted it, Marty Kir have proven them wrong — tomato plants grow quicker with more light. Marty, a Grade 7 student at Queen of Peace School, won the top award in the annual science fair with a greenhouse project using three different intensity lights and three tomato plants. He won a gold medal and a calculator for his efforts.

Leamington’s pool may need some major repairs, but a patch-up program will maintain it for this summer’s use, town council was told Monday night. Community Services Committee Chair Clarence Moore told council that a recent inspection of the pool indicated it would need major expenditures in the near future.

Essex Cable TV wants to increase its installation from $15 to $20 and the monthly fee from $6 to $6.50. The application to do so will be heard by the CRTC on June 25. Essex Cable has subscribers in Leamington and Kingsville.

Bandmaster Jim Barnett of the Kingsville-Essex Associate Band approached town council Monday night to state the finances required to operate the band. The Town of Essex allocated $7,840 towards the band this year and Essex does not charge them for audit fees, treasurer’s fees or rental fees for practice at Essex Arena. In Kingsville, a bylaw passed in 1968 states that 1/8 of a mill would be allocated to bands in Kingsville. That 1/8 mill equals $4,250. Mr. Barnett stated that of $8,345 could be received from Kingsville, the remainder could be raised by the band, which has a total budget of $42,255.

Born in McGrary, Manitoba, Mr. Taves moved to Leamington in 1935 and attended school at the Pelee Island and Romney #2 School in his early years. There will be an open house tea in the school gym on June 3 from 2-4 pm honouring Ben and his family.

Flyers win first-ever Sutherland Cup

Last Tuesday night, May 9, in front of a packed house of 2,200 at Stratford’s William Allman Arena, the Leamington Flyers completed their season-long quest by winning the Sutherland Cup.

After the opening minutes of the game seven contest, the Flyers put on a show of dominance, although to the Warriors’ fans it was more like the MacPherson show, as Connor and Ryan MacPherson accounted for all four Flyers goals in a decisive 4-0 victory.

The opening period was a typical Flyers effort with good puck control and good bodychecking.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard despite the fact that both the Flyers’ Bryce Walcarius and Warriors’ Owen Willmore were tested with Leamington outshooting Stratford 7-6.

The second period was

totally different.

The Flyers upped their game and took total control, outshooting the Warriors 18-3.

The break both teams were looking for came early, at 1:06, when the Flyers went on a powerplay.

Koen Taves hooked a pass from the top of the slot to Connor MacPherson, whose left faceoff circle bullet eluded Willmore and made it 1-0 for the Flyers.

It was the first goal of a big night for Connor. At 9:05, he battled a Stratford player at the left point of the Leamington zone, banked the puck into the neutral zone, where he picked it up, raced down the ice and deked Willmore for a 2-0 Flyers’ lead.

Despite the Warriors effort to get their own offense going, the Flyers offense just kept pressuring Stratford while their defense took care of their

end and Bryce Walcarius stopped all that came his way.

The final nail in the Warriors’ coffin was inserted by Ryan MacPherson at 1:12 of the third when Nolan McKibbin sent a long centre pass directly onto Ryan’s stick. MacPherson went on a breakaway that ended with a laser shot that made it a 3-0 contest.

The rest of the third period became a back-andforth game with Stratford desperate to get on the scoreboard and make a game out of it. The Flyers had other intentions and were not about to squander the lead.

With 2:12 left, Stratford pulled Willmore for an extra attacker and it didn’t take long for the Flyers to put the icing on the cake as Connor MacPherson whisked a long shot from inside the Flyers zone that found the empty net and thus completed his hattrick and the 2023 Sutherland Cup.

The Flyers outshot the Warriors 12-11 in the final frame. The series MVP was bestowed upon Connor

MacPherson before Flyers’ captain Gabe Piccolo accepted the Sutherland Cup trophy and was joined by his teammates

and the throng of supporters who were present.

Talbot Trail senior golf news

We’re back! On Tuesday, May 2 there were 17 senior golfers who showed up at the clubhouse to register. The golf course had received an over abundance of rain so only one diehard golfer, Ken Krueger, decided to venture out.

On Tuesday, May 9 there were 60 senior golfers who showed up and they were eager to play. It is expected that the league will possibly have as many as 80-85 participants this year.

League fees will be collected in a couple of weeks. At this point it is expected to be $50. This entitles the senior participants to food and prizes on the scrambles. There is also a 50-25-25 draw at each scramble: June, July, August and early October.

A June travel excursion is being planned by Bummy.

Drummond merited superb 43s. Mike Wright and Joe Vrtel scored very commendable 45s.

Although many of the league players, including myself, found the course to be very challenging, there were still lots of smiles and laughter heard.

Jacks (Bryon Walker, Gary Wilson, Mavis Rutter) with a score of 240.
