KINGSVILLE – Another itinerary of award winning and crowd-pleasing musicians is on its way to Kingsville. Kingsville Folk Music Festival co-producers John and Michele Law officially unveiled the list of performers to grace the five stages of the yearly event’s sixth installment Thursday, April 11 at the Carnegie Arts and Visitor Centre — the festival’s newest main office location. The Laws announced that the festival’s grounds at Lakeside Park will feature two headlining acts and another two-dozen performers throughout the Friday, Aug. 9 to Sunday, Aug. 11 weekend. Main attractions for 2019 will be six-time Juno Award winner Serena Ryder as the headliner for Friday’s schedule, while Los Angeles-based duo The Milk Carton Kids will be the feature performers on Sunday. Calypso-based Kobo Town of Toronto, also Juno winners, will play on Saturday evening, while Latin guitar standout and Juno winner Oscar Lopez is also scheduled to wow audiences. Others for 2019 will include 2016 Juno and 2015 CFMA Children’s Album of the Year winners The Swinging Belles, a Newfoundland-based trio who performed live during last year’s Wheatley Fish Festival. The balance of performers include Gerf Morlix, Danny Michel, Union Duke, Tri-Continental, Briga, Zachary (Continued on Page 7)

CHATHAM-KENT – On Wednesday night, April 10, members of the Chatham-Kent Police Intelligence Section executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at an apartment in Chatham. Cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, cannabis marijuana, hydromorphone, GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate), ecstasy, morphine and fentanyl with a total street value of over $2.6-million was seized. An electronic digital scale, packaging materials, $52,000 in Canadian currency and a 9mm hand gun and ammunition were also seized. A 35-year-old Chatham man was charged with: possession for the purpose of trafficking (x9); possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order (x4); unauthorized possession of a weapon; unsafe storage of a weapon; possession of a prohibited weapon; possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition; and tampering with a serial number. “This was both a lengthy and tedious investigation requiring the use of many resources,” said Chief Gary Conn, Chatham-Kent Police Service. “I have been saying for some time now that a lot of our property crime, especially break and enters, are tied back to drugs, as there is a direct correlation between these offences.” “Our Service is committed to mitigating and fighting against the sale and consumption of illicit drugs within our community,” continued Chief Conn. “The execution of this search warrant and eventual seizure of these controlled substances with a street value of $2,669,290.00 is proof of that commitment. This bust is the largest in Chatham-Kent history, which has resulted in an arrest and 18 drug and weapon related offences.”

Protesting budget cuts Union members representing various locals and divisions of OSSTF, ETFO, CUPE, Ontario Nurses Association and others gathered in front of Conservative MPP Rick Nicholls’ Leamington office on Erie Street North for a rally Monday, April 15. Teachers unions and their supporters converged that afternoon in protest of the education budget cuts proposed by Ontario’s Doug Ford government that would trigger larger class sizes, mandatory online courses and the layoff of thousands of education workers. Similar rallies were staged by unions across the province, with another scheduled for Chatham next week. More than 100 teachers, backed by a handful of students and other supporters, met in front of the local office of Nicholls, who at Queen’s Park at the time. Kristen GarrettSpanswick, education support staff president of the OSSTF, noted that the specific extent of the education budget cuts is still unknown, as government plans for Grants For Student Needs have not been released. After a handful of speeches from various union leaders, those in attendance marched up and down the sidewalks along Erie Street, north and south of Nicholls’ office. Sue Adamson, Executive Assistant to Nicholls, stated that their office was not made aware of the protest prior to the event. The lone office staff was unable to go outside to address the protesters. “If Rick was there, he would have talked to them, but he wasn’t and we didn’t know they were coming,” stated Adamson. Mural of Erie Shoreline adorns Welcome Centre
Hospice Welcome Centre opening soon By Sheila McBrayne
LEAMINGTON – It only took Windsor artist Martin Lacasse two and half days to complete a 10’ by 12’ mural of the Erie shoreline from Leamington to Amherstburg, including Pelee Island. The large map adorns the entrance in the soon-to-be opened Welcome Centre at Erie Shores Hospice in Leamington (behind the Leamington Area Family Health Team). “It’s too bad it’s over. There’s a rhythm to painting. It just flowed,” said Lacasse. He started the mural on Monday, April 8 and finished on Wednesday morning. Lacasse created the painting postcard of Essex County from an actual map of the shoreline with some suggested highlights from Leamington resident and Board member of Hospice of Windsor-Essex County Joan McSweeney. “I filtered requests and made it into a painting. It’s more than an information map; it’s kind of like – ‘here’s all your memories of the area.’ It shows the timeless beauty of the shoreline and says everything is going to be alright,” said the artist about his painting. The mural includes scenery like vineyards, greenhouses, barns, orchards, tractors and Monarch butterflies, which link together the locations dots on the map. “It’s almost like a collage of life memories encapsulated into the area,” said Lacasse. “It clearly shows Erie Shores in vignettes of the multitude of things we find in Essex,” said McSweeney. Lacasse has been painting since he was five years old, and professionally for 20 years. His business, Lacasse Art, has created painted memories for businesses as well as individuals. Some of his murals and artwork can be seen at Sun Parlor Nursing Home, Elite Restaurant, Erie Shores Hospice and throughout Essex County and Ontario. Lacasse’s artwork can be viewed at lacasseart.com The Welcome Centre will officially open on May 2. The building will be used for Hospice programs, cel9379 Tecumseh Rd East, Windsor (519)979-1900 ebrations, volunteer training and will be a centre for volunteers – knitters, quilters, scrapbookers and more.

LHS enjoys Point Pelee National Park presentation By Catherine Riediger
LEAMINGTON – Welcome to spring! The Leamington Horticultural Society welcomed spring at their March 20th meeting with guest speaker Andrew Laforet, Interpretation Coordinator from Point Pelee National Park, giving an enlightening presentation on the park. A National Park since 1918, it’s Canada’s second smallest National Park, its mainland is Canada’s southernmost point, its marsh is a wetland of international significance, it is a dark sky preserve and is a “bird and butterfly migration hotspot”. Park maintenance is ongoing and Andrew highlighted two restoration projects. The Park’s native Red Mulberry trees are threatened by hybridization with White Mulberry trees. To prevent hybridization, White Mulberry trees within a certain range of Red Mulberry trees are removed; Red Mulberry flowers are manually pollinated by Parks Canada staff and covered with bags to prevent White Mulberry pollen from entering; the resulting seeds are harvested and are currently growing in a greenhouse for future planting. The Savannah Habitat is open, sunny, hot, dry and the primary habitat for 15 of Point Pelee’s species at risk, including Prickly Pear Cactus and the Five-lined Skink. Historically, ice scour and fire would have opened up the Savannah. To restore this habitat, Parks Canada staff remove invasive species including Garlic Mustard, Spotted Knapweed, White Sweet Clover, Dogwood and plant native species such as Canada Wild Rye, Blazing Star, Bluestem and Milkweed. Prescribed burns to “reset” the habitat are implemented. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada designated the park as a Dark Sky Preserve. About once a month, the park stays open until midnight or later offering visitors the opportunity to stargaze. There are volunteer opportunities such as milkweed planting Saturday, June 15 and beach cleanups each Saturday in July and August. There is something for everyone with many special events from April to October. For more information on upcoming events and volunteering, visit www.pc.gc.ca/ pelee, www.facebook.com/pointpeleeNP or call 519-322-2365. The Society’s annual plant sale will be held at Leamington United Church, Saturday, May 11. If you have any plants to donate and/or require assistance in digging and potting, please contact Pixie at 403-200-8089 or Erna at 519-324-2669. Look forward to seeing you there.
Skilled trades (Continued from front) skilled trades jobs in Windsor and Essex County, so we’re trying to get younger students to think about the trades,” explained WECDSB Grade 7-8 transition teacher Amy Bensette. “We want to give them a chance to work with their hands and find something they love doing.” Mike St. Pierre, Pathways, SHSM and Technological Studies teacher consultant with the WECDSB, noted that as Grade 8 students have already selected their elective courses for the 2019-’20 school year, Grade 7s were given the opportunity to test the pilot project at Cardinal Carter. The school board is not yet certain if the project will become an annual feature for the three schools, although it has been well received in 2019. “The kids are enjoying not having to be at a desk all day,” Bensette noted. “Overall, there’s been a lot of very positive feedback. Kids are enjoying things as simple as place settings and basic floral arrangements. There are boys who are surprised to find that they can do a simple braid.” Students were paired off as ‘journeypersons’ and ‘apprentices’ where the former read out instructions to the latter at several different stations.

Memories of... Kingsville, Leamington and Wheatley
Photos from Kingsville-Gosfield Heritage Society 1790-2000 A Stroll Through Time
What, me worry? There’s no harm in trying to pass off a glass that’s half empty as one that’s half full. Even some of the most pessimistic sports fans on Earth — like myself — do it from time to time. Case in point, I’m sitting here watching Game 2 of the Eastern quarterfinals between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs, trying to ignore the depressing fact that I’m, well… watching Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs. With a “cable” package that’s little more than network television and a food channel that seems to air nothing more than competitive cake baking (yup, that’s a thing), my 2019 Stanley Cup playoff viewing options are limited. If I had to fill out a form that for some reason asked me to list the three NHL teams I hate the most, I’d probably jot down the Leafs, Bruins and Ducks. So yeah, it’s a bitter night for a Habs fan watching a couple decades-old rivals play each other while your team is already hitting the Bryan Jessop links. How do you put a positive spin on that? Well, earlier this month, the Canadiens became the most successful non-playoff team in National Hockey League history. When I was a kid, 96 points all but guaranteed your team first place in its division. Heck, in the Norris Division (Chicago, Minnesota, St. Louis, Detroit and Toronto), you’d have been a good 20 points ahead of the group’s second place team. If the Habs were anything like the Nashville Predators, they’d probably raise a banner into the rafters of The Bell Centre in honour of the “accomplishment.” Anyway, during one of the intermissions of the Leafs/Bruins game, commentators were noting how the Winnipeg Jets are “not worried” about being down 2-0 in their series against the St. Louis Blues. Really? Your team limps through the last 15 games of the regular season like a cockroach with five broken legs, completely blows home ice advantage to head into the opposition’s barn a pair of games away from elimination and you’re “not worried?” Sometimes, optimism simply has to take a back seat to addressing the elephant in the room. When I was in my teens, a few friends and I watched a movie (the name escapes me) about a crew of hapless and mostly inept Vikings who stumble upon an island that had to, for whatever reason, exist without bloodshed to stay afloat. Eventually, someone gets stabbed and the island promptly begins sinking. The Vikings scramble for the safety of their ship — to which they offer their hosts as a means of escaping otherwise certain doom — but the oblivious residents refuse to budge. In a scene that was very Monty Python-esque, the cheery group of lunkheads refuses to accept the obvious, even as they’re all up to their chins in the ocean’s surface. Spoiler alert… they drown. To me, the Winnipeg Jets (at least as of April 13), are that hopelessly optimistic island of pacifists. If I were to be on the bench staff of an NHL team in that situation and someone from the media sticks a microphone in my face, I declare that “this team had better get its you-know-what together if it wants to see the conference semis.” Guess what, Jets — it’s time to worry. Sadly, ignoring a problem NEVER makes it go away. You can put an old car or truck on Kijiji or Craigslist and refer to the unsightly effects of oxidization as “patina,” but it’s still rust (no big deal if you’re into rat rods, a very big deal if you’re looking for a show car/ truck). And no, left to its own devices, rust doesn’t go away. It just gets worse. Nobody has to accept his or her problems. If you want to do away with them however, you’d better start by at least acknowledging them.
Fishing has always attracted residents and summer visitors to the shores of Cedar Creek. Syd Cox, a local resident, is seen holding his handmade fishing rod and a string of mostly bullheads after a successful day fishing along the creek, date unknown.

Unitarian church welcomes new Minister By Bryan Jessop
Kingsville mayor Nelson Santos (centre) presents a contribution of $20,000 to Kingsville Folk Music Festival co producers Michele and John Law during the unveiling of the lineup for the sixth edition of the renowned three-day event. The Town of Kingsville has committed to support for the festival to the tune of $20,000 per year for the next five years. (Southpoint Sun Photo)
Headliners, funding announced for Folk Festival (Continued from Front) Lucky, Annie Sumi, Gabriel Palatchi Band, Traditionally Wound, Magoo, Gathering Sparks, Low Lily, Crissi Cochrane, The Pairs, author John Gardiner, Adam Wendler, Maria and David Celia, Erika Kulnys, Jeremy Fisher Jr., Brendan Scott Friel, T. Nile and Jangles the Magic Clown. “We’re really excited about this year — there’s no shortage of great performers,” explained John Law of this year’s lineup. “Having two headliners this year is really cool. There’ll be lots of kids activities and workshops and with the oneday passes, you’ll get a lot of music for $40.” The Laws were joined by festival committee board members and Kingsville mayor Nelson Santos, who presented the producers with a cheque of $20,000 — the first of five equal donations to be made by the town over the next five years. The event’s team of volunteers is led by board president Den-
Theft from church LEAMINGTON – On Sunday, April 7 at approximately 12 p.m., Leamington OPP received a theft complaint from a church on Fox Street. A person had entered the church, took the collection plate and fled the scene. Police were advised that church members were pursuing the suspect on foot and had reported they were last in a nearby alley. An OPP officer arrived at the location within minutes, locating and arresting the suspect. A 40-year-old Leamington woman was charged with theft under $5,000 and breach of probation. The majority of the money taken has been recovered.
nis Rogers, who explained that the group — some of whom offer their services year-round through bingos and other pre-festival events — is pivotal in making the three-day event a reality.
“The whole point is about making it the best experience possible.” — Michele Law
“They work tirelessly, which we all appreciate,” he said, noting that some volunteers return each year from Florida, Texas, British Columbia and the Netherlands. “A lot of them come back to help out every year. If it wasn’t for the people working the gates, nobody would come through.” Last year’s Kingsville Folk Music Festival drew a combined crowd of more than 4,000.
“We’re always focusing on the atmosphere and the experience we’re providing,” Michele Law said. “The whole point is about making it the best experience possible.” The Laws explained that online ‘Early Bird’ ticket sales have been encouraging this year. The website www.kingsvillefolkfest.org has again proven the most popular means of buying tickets, which are available at Early Bird rates until May 1. Tickets can also be bought by calling 1-800-838-3006 or in person at The Grove Brew House, Lee and Maria’s or Ernie’s TV in Kingsville, Dr. Disc in Windsor, Fletcher’s Cleaners in Leamington, Guardian Drugs or Symphony Stables in Wheatley or at Baja Café in Chatham. This year’s festival will feature several artisan, food and beverage vendors. More information is available on the event’s website, including volunteer opportunities.

A new Minister with a big city background is feeling right at home in a far more rural setting. Reverend Rodrigo Emilio Solano-Quesnel first arrived at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Olinda — located at Olinda Side Road and County Road 5 north of Ruthven — in October of 2018. At that time, he replaced interim Minister Reverend Frances Dearman, who committed to a two-year term after 15 years of ministry by Reverend Christine Hillman, who died in 2015. Solano-Quesnel, known to many simply as “Reverend Rod” — was officially welcomed as the Unitarian church’s Minister with an installation ceremony on Sunday, April 14 at the church. The event was a celebration of formalizing his joining with UU’s ministry. “I’ve spent most of my life in big metropolises, so the rural setting was our biggest adjustment,” Solano-Quesnel said of himself and his partner Sarah. “Fortunately, it’s worked out very well for us. This is a very inclusive congregation that makes faith, hope and love accessible to all humanity.” Solano-Quesnel was born and raised in Mexico City, although he moved to London, Ont. in the early 1990s. From there, he moved to Ottawa and graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor

of Public Affairs and Policy Management. Rod discovered Unitarian Universalism at the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa. After attending seminary at the Montreal School of Theology and serving as board secretary at the Unitarian Church of Montreal, Solano-Quesnel moved to Toronto to serve as Interim Minister at First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto. In the provincial capital’s east end, he and partner Sarah joined the Neighbourhood Unitarian Universalist Congregation, where he was or-
dained in 2016. From there, Rod alternated weeks between Ottawa and Toronto locations, calling both cities home. Upon arriving at Unitarian Universalist Church of Olinda, Rod found his current home in Leamington. The process to find a replacement for Dearman began in December of last year. Solano-Quesnel explained that the procedure — conducted continentwide by the Unitarian Universalist Association based in Boston — is not one that (Continued on Page 8)

Unitarian church welcomes new minister (Continued from Page 7) is taken lightly. “It’s a very meticulous search process,” he said. “We want to ensure that it’s a good fit with the same expectations and goals.” The UU Church of Olinda’s membership of about 60 selected Solano-Quesnel as its newest Minister unanimously. The selection followed an application process considered by a committee of half a dozen members.
“It’s a great honour and a great opportunity,” Rod explained. “It’s fantastic. There’s a big process to get to this point, but it’s been fun.” Solano-Quesnel’s newest church was established in 1880, with the current building being built one year later. Members hail from across Essex County, the city of Windsor and in some cases, Michigan. The next closest Unitarian Universalist churches are in
Sarnia and London. Since arriving, Rod and Sarah have put emphasis on integrating themselves into their new community. Both are members of the Southpoint Ukulele Group (SPUG) and have attended Dale’s Friday Coffee House gatherings in Leamington and Robbie Burns Night in Kingsville. “We really enjoy getting to know the community,” Solano-Quesnel explained.

KINGSVILLE – Almost one year later, neighbours are still upset with the noise from the car wash located at 281 Main St. E. Tony and Mary Taylor attended Kingsville Council meetings in recent months, saying the noise coming from the blowers of the car wash have made enjoying their property impossible. Last month, a recommendation to Council that it retain Dillon Consulting to complete a noise impact assessment at the expense of the car wash owners was denied by Council. In the meantime, administration has reviewed an acoustical report, provided by the business owner, which contradicts an earlier acoustical study. CAO Peggy Van Mierlo-West said it is not unusual for municipalities to retain third parties to review the studies and conduct its own acoustical studies when no one on staff has the expertise to provide an in-house study. In an extremely close 4-3 vote, Council agreed to retain Dillon Consulting at a cost of about $6,000 to review the studies and conduct their own acoustical study. The cost will come from the Planning Department’s operational budget.

High winds cause flooding The Essex Region Conservation Authority issued a flood watch on Thursday, April 11 as 40 km/hr winds out of the northeast caused flooding along the Lake Erie shoreline in Kingsville, Leamington, Essex and Wheatley areas. The watch was in effect until Saturday. A flood warning was issued on Monday, April 15 for east shoreline areas of Leamington, and the north and east ends of Pelee Island. Municipal events budgets adjusted By Bryan Jessop
LEAMINGTON – Adjustments made to the municipality’s events budget for 2019 represent a case of out with the old and in with the new. Leamington culture and tourism development officer Kyra Knapp and manager of economic development, tourism and special events James Cox presented Council with a list of recommendations focusing on both Leamington’s uptown core and southern shore. A multisectional report suggested
a budget reduction for one event, more than five times the original allocated amount set aside for another and the cancellation of a third for the calendar year of 2019. While the budget for the new Mill Street Markets, returning Summer Concert Series, Pedestrian Pier, Music OnThe42 advertising and monthly Facebook and Instagram advertising will remain the same combined at $119,500, some events will be financially bolstered while others are subject to spending reductions or outright cancellations for the

current year. The first item of consideration was retaining the services of the Sun Parlour Players Community Theatre for planning the second yearly Music OnThe42 Summer Concert Series. The SPPCT was the lower of two bids to implement this year’s multi-date itinerary with a quote of $35,358 — more than $21,600 cheaper than a Windsorbased offering. Music OnThe42’s 2019 budget was altered from $100,000 to $65,000, including Bank OnThe42 performances but not including a Windsor Symphony Orchestra show. Music OnThe42 and Bank OnThe42 series will include Seacliff Amphitheatre performances June 22 and 27, July 1, 13 and 27 and August 10 and 17 prior to the WSO’s visit on August 24. Last year, Summer Concert
Series events began at 7 p.m. For 2019, organizers are targeting 8 p.m. starts. Performers for the first seven shows will be revealed with the publication of literature later this month. Last year, Music OnThe42 drew 25,000 spectators to its free concerts while Bank OnThe42 featured, smaller, local acts. “To have places to go in town that don’t cost money is a wonderful aspect of our community,” noted Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “These events add so much that’s been missing in the past. They’ll be long-enjoyed features of our community.” As part of the funds distribution shuffling, Cox and Knapp suggested cancelling the Outdoor Movie Night program for 2019. Cox noted that in the past, weather has been problematic for the (Continued on Page 19)

Talbot Trail sr. golf starts next week By Bob McLean
All past league members are welcome back to the enjoyable Tuesday seniors golf league at Talbot Trail Golf Course. The league is ready to welcome all new members as well. If the weather conditions permit, play will commence on Tuesday, April 30 at 9 a.m. If you find the silver tees too tough, play the gold ones, as having fun is more important than the scores on this day. Silver tee players will still be challenged to shoot their best scores and to try to improve as the season progresses. Did you know that this league has been running since 1982? It was started by Jack Baker, Jake Reid and Dr. McLean. On the first outing, golfers need to register between 8:10 and 8:50 a.m. in order to get the groups off smoothly for the league’s first golf test of the year. New golfers are asked to provide their name and age so they can be placed in the correct grouping for reporting scores. Wiz would like to have everyone’s e-mail address, so please provide this when you sign in. Join up whenever you are ready. The cost to participate includes four barbecued meals, prizes and great weekly fun. For more information on joining this league, contact the golf course at 519-825-4521. Derek Brown and Robert Gillespie have been kept very busy getting the course in great shape. Since the new watering system is fully functioning, golfers can expect another year of excellent fairways, tees and greens.
Wheatley Bridge scores The following are the Wheatley Bridge Club scores from April 2: 1st Dave Derbyshire, 2nd Loretta Marquis, 3rd Neil Phillipson. Bridge is played every Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Wheatley Friendship Club. If you enjoy playing euchre or pepper, you’ll love playing bridge. New players are always welcome.

Municipal events budgets adjusted (Continued from Page 10) projector screen, which requires substantial space to be set up. Wind and rain have triggered the cancellation of some Movie Nights in the past, while an alternate location to Seacliff Park or the Leamington Municipal Marina have not yet been determined. Last year, a budget of just over $7,000 was set aside for the four Movie Nights, each attended by an average of 100 residents. For this year, the amount was set at $7,500 — an amount that will now be redirected to uptown programming. Coinciding with the recent renovations on the western, one-way section of Mill Street, the municipality will present seven “Mill Street Markets” for 2019. The open concept, free admission markets will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the first Fridays of May to October and Saturday, Nov. 30 prior to and during Leamington’s Santa Claus Parade. The municipality will apply for an alcohol permit from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario for the markets, which will include municipal employees monitoring the events. CAO Peter Neufeld noted that participating vendors will be equipped with Smart Serve licenses, while age checks are conducted for patrons purchasing alcohol. Security personnel and OPP officers will also be present during the markets. The budget for the Mill Street Markets, initially set at $10,000, has been increased to $54,500. The markets will feature food vendors, handcrafted items, vintage clothing

Learn To RUN JUNGLE
ORION
Hey there, I’m Jungle, and I’m one of the handomsest guys around! I came from this other country that’s across the bridge (Detroit, I think it’s called) and am excited to explore this new country. I can be a bit uncertain in new environments, but enjoy time with people and like brushing up to them. What do you say? Can you love a sweet boy like me?
Orion would rather explore your world than chase Taurus across the night sky, but his explorations stop as soon as the toys come out. He’ll keep you amused with his playtime antics, whether it’s pushing the ball around the room with his nose or his very energetic play with toy mice (for the record, the mice don’t stand a chance!). You’ll know when he wants your attention when he rubs against your hand or leg, and you’ll definitely know he’s there because he puts his whole body weight into those rubs!

WORD SCRAMBLE
First car for three owners Lloyd Mackenzie of Sussex, New Brunswick, writes: “Upon graduation from Sussex Composite High School in 1968, I went down the road to Ontario to seek fame and fortune while gaining life experience. “I was determined to bankroll enough money for post-secondary education to escape my perceived drudgery of the Maritime way of life – farming, fishing and lumbering. “My break came when my sister and her family vacationed in N.B. that summer and offered free transportation to London, Ontario, and free room and board until I found gainful employment. Southern Ontario was Bill Sherk booming and I quickly snagged a job as a casual letter carrier at the London East Post Office for $2.28 an hour. “Because of my P.O. badge, I could utilize free urban transit and had no need for a car. However, temptation got the better of me and I began to scour used car ads. I was soon chatting with a salesman in Woodstock, Ontario, about a 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne two-door sedan. “A bit over-priced at $400 but it was in great shape with a tasteful amount of chrome, smooth lines and a nice blue colour. I would have preferred a V8 (who didn’t in those days!) but the six performed well when paired with the three-speed and was fantastic on fuel. “I returned to N.B. that spring and enjoyed the Chevy all summer, but in the fall it was time to sell and attend UNB. Naturally I wanted to recoup what I had paid but brokered a deal with a very good friend who agreed to place $30 a month in my account for the next 12 months. And he was and is a good friend – $360 was deposited in total and always on time. “We continued to hang out so I still got to enjoy the Chevy. One Friday night, he said he had something to show me. Lo and behold, he had hooked up a three-speed Hurst floor shifter to the transmission. Beautiful! “My friend drove the Chevy until he could afford a ’63 Chevy and transferred ‘my’ ’58 to his younger brother. So in this ‘first car’ story, it’s a three for one deal – my first car, my friend’s first car, and his younger brother’s first car.” I’m always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca.

Erie Shores clubhouse reopens with many changes By Sheila McBrayne
Booster Juice opens in Leamington Booster Juice co-owners Virag Patel and Radha Patel (far left and far right), along with Leamington mayor Hilda MacDonald and deputy mayor Larry Verbeke, perform a ribbon-cutting ceremony during the grand opening of the new business Saturday, April 13. Leamington’s Booster Juice franchise is located at 288 Erie St. South in Unit C3 — the corner of the former location for Leamington’s Bulk Barn. The Patels have seven employees at their local branch of the business, with the possibility for more hires as the summer months approach. The business opened in early March and celebrated last weekend’s grand opening with a two for one deal on all purchases. Smoothies, juices, yogurts, puddings, paninis, wraps, baked items and other selections are on the menu. More information is available at www.boosterjuice. com. (Southpoint Sun Photo)
Erie Shores Golf Course has opened for another season along with the opening of the newly renovated clubhouse restaurant at Erie Shores. Renovations over the past few months have transformed the Robson Road clubhouse into an elegant dining lounge. “It’s a little of both really. You can still get sliders, wings or a sandwich, but I think we’ve upped the ante a bit and added some Mediterranean entrees and features as well,” said Guisseppi Piruzza, executive chef. The lunch and dinner menus are available all day. The dining room has been refreshed with a coat of white paint, new tables and chairs and a new ceiling. Extensive improvements have been made inside the kitchen as well. “We’ve made improvements in all areas to deliver the best quality food possible,” said Piruzza. The dining room features one of the best patios overlooking Lake Erie. The patio can accommodate 120 people. “I believe it is the largest patio on the lake in Erie Shores Golf Club Restaurant Essex County,” said executive chef Piruzza who grew up executive chef Guisseppi Piruzza in Windsor and has travelled the world as an executive makes a cherries jubilee. chef. Over the past 23 years Piruzza has cooked in nine different countries including Italy, France and Dubai. Piruzza explained that the new clubhouse restaurant offers a 100-mile menu featuring vegetables, fruit, meats and ingredients grown and raised locally. The wine list also includes Essex County wines as well as international selections.

Peter H. Epp Peter H. Epp passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2019. Beloved husband of Marie (Peters). Loving father of Susan Epp, Dan Epp, the late Ken Epp (2010) (Joan), Ron Epp (Kathy), and Edwin Epp (Jodi). Loving grandfather of Matthew Epp, Joshua Epp (Jacklyn), Mikaele Epp (Keith), Kevin Epp (Emma), Elyse Epp, Jessica Epp, Kody Epp, Braeden Epp, and great-grandfather of Lauren O’Bright. Dear brother of the late Elizabeth Reimer (late John), late Jacob Epp (late Maria), late Mika Rollgaiser (late Alex), late Anna Janzen (late Walter), late Margaret Thiessen (late George), late Heinrich Epp. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Peter’s whole life revolved around farming. He took great pride and care in growing a bountiful harvest. His wife Marie, a former teacher, adapted well to this new lifestyle and they worked side by side until the end. He was a wonderful mentor to his children and grandchildren, and taught them the value of hard work and a job well done. Retirement was always in the distant future. Peter strongly believed in giving back to the community that had encouraged and supported him when he arrived in Canada from the Ukraine in 1947. He was a dedicated servant to the church, agricultural industry, the local hospital and UMEI. He always kept a finger on the pulse of the current political climate. His philosophy was to improve the lot of the farmer and the local community. He will be missed, but the groundwork he has laid will be continued with the next generation. He will be in our hearts and lives in every memory we have of him. We will miss him every day, but will draw from the memory of his strength and never-ending love for family and friends. Visiting was at the Reid Funeral Home & Reception Centre, 14 Russell Street, Leamington (519-326-2631) on Monday from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Celebration of Peter’s life was held at the North Leamington United Mennonite Church, 6th Concession, Leamington, on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 11 a.m. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to Erie Shores Health Foundation or Christian Horizons would be appreciated. Volunteers and input are always welcomed. The Active Citizens group meets quarterly at the Wheatley Legion at 7 p.m. The next meeting will be June 13. “After talking about our name, we decided that the word ‘Active’ better describes our role within Wheatley.
