Mill Street class makes ACCESS donation
A Grade 5/6 class at Mill Street Public School wasn’t the only group to benefit from learning a valuable lesson.
Led by teacher Janice DiLaudo, the group of about 30 students researched and studied the issue of homelessness, during which time they discovered that the problem is not isolated strictly to far-away, third-world nations. Upon learning that poverty exists throughout Essex County, the class was inspired to collect donations from family members and in turn donate the sum of $305.60 to ACCESS, a Kingsville-based community services organization. In return, ACCESS youth transitional support workers Danielle Denis and Lindsay Jones visited the classroom to offer a presentation on the region’s poverty levels — where students learned that one in 10 Windsor-Essex County residents are impoverished and 40 percent of those people are children.
The two-week research project and two-week fundraising drive were inspired by a reading of the Jerry Spinelli novel “Maniac Magee,” a work of fiction based on the day-to-day life of a 12-year-old homeless boy. The main character, Jeffrey, is a modest and thoughtful youth who is consistently
exposed to the turbulent streets of a fictitious Pennsylvania city and its issues with racial tension.
The study and research culminated into a ‘carousel of learning’ presentation created with the iPad Educreation app. Groups of students produced presentations to the rest of the class on a variety of issues pertaining to homelessness.
The project was centered around inquiry-based learning while incoming donations were divided into currency increments from pennies to 50-dollar bills and logged via the class’s data management math course. Upon being told about the project, the family of one student also donated about a dozen sleeping bags, also to be distributed by ACCESS to those in need.
“This is an effort to take all our subjects and make them count for humanity,” said DiLaudo, noting that literacy, health and guidance and math courses were utilized to implement the program. “There is a lot of integrity in this classroom. There are a lot of beautiful hearts. The main goal here is to let them know that they can all help their community in some small way.”
The students of DiLaudo’s classroom represent 12 of the
25 nations that Mill Street families lived in before immigrating to the Leamington area. During the morning of each day that was included in the project, a question on homelessness was asked to the entire class. The quiz winner was permitted to wear a new pair of size 18 Nike’s, displayed in the room as a symbol of Jeffrey’s “big character.”
The Tuesday morning presentation by ACCESS was the organization’s first at an elementary school. While at Mill Street, the organization’s two representatives discussed programs and services including the Transitional Store, nutrition programs, the foodbank and other forms of assistance relied on by youths from across the county. Shelters in Essex County were used by 1,709 residents in the year 2012 alone.
“The donation our class made will help with all of the programs offered by ACCESS; even cab rides,” DiLaudo explained.

CO detectors donated to LFS
By Bryan Jessop
Nearly 100 Leamington homes will be safer places to live and sleep thanks to the efforts of Ontario’s municipal affairs critic and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
On Tuesday, Dec. 16, Chatham-Kent-Essex MPP Rick Nicholls and provincial municipal affairs and housing critic and Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman — along with Doug DeRabbie of the IBC — paid a visit to the Leamington Fire Services on Clark Street, where 96 carbon monoxide (CO) detectors were donated for distribution among Leamingtonarea residences. The visitors were greeted by LFS chief Chuck Parsons, deputy chief Mike Ciacelli, other members of the LFS and Leamington mayor John Paterson. Hardeman, Nicholls, Parsons and DeRabbie each spoke of the importance of functional CO detectors as well as the motivation behind new Ontario legislation that made them mandatory as of mid October this year. Hardeman presented a bill in Queen’s Park to propose the required use of the devices after a family of four in Woodstock was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in 2008 after a gas fireplace vent became clogged — allowing lethal gas to flow back into the home. The private member’s bill — Bill 77 or the HawkinsGignac Act — passed in November of 2013.
Hardeman — also a former minister of agriculture and a firefighter of 25 years — previously visited Leamington and Wheatley areas to survey flood-triggered crop damage as the agricultural critic in mid July of last year.
“This isn’t about forcing people to have carbon monoxide detectors in their homes,” Hardeman noted. “This is
about, as those in the fire services have been about for a long time, building public awareness of the necessity of having them in your home.”
Along with Hardeman, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has ‘toured’ Canadian communities for the past year and thus far has donated in excess of 3,000 CO detectors to more than 30 fire departments across the country. The visits will continue onward into the new year.
“We have a commitment to increasing awareness on the dangers of carbon monoxide,” said DeRabbie.
The IBC rep continued to thank Hardeman for his dedication to passing Bill 77 and credited him for the creation of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week — the first week of November.
“It’s more than just one week. We have to get the message out throughout the year,” DeRabbie explained.
Parsons noted that carbon monoxide is a colourless, odorless, tasteless gas that is unnoticeable without a CO detector. The devices donated to Leamington Fire Services will be distributed to local homes based on risk and need assessments.
“The donation is absolutely fabulous. We really appreciate that,” Parsons said. “We need to detect it and we need to eliminate the tragedies. We’ve seen our fire deaths drop thanks to smoke alarms and we really want to see the same results from the use of carbon monoxide alarms in the homes.”
The deadly effects of carbon monoxide poisoning were felt in Leamington in the late 1980s. After severe flooding,
a contractor utilized a propane heater to dry up the basement floors and walls of a local home. Emissions from the heater led to the deaths of four residents.
Roughly a year and a half ago, two Leamington lives were saved by a functional CO detector that sounded its alarm after a stove was accidentally left on from about 6 p.m. The detector awoke the two residents at midnight.
“Carbon monoxide detectors have saved lives in Leamington, I can tell you that for sure,” Ciacelli said.
Ciacelli explained that signs of CO poisoning often include flu-like symptoms and headaches. Along with Hardeman, he noted that simply stepping outside for a few minutes of fresh air will not ensure the safety of anyone exposed to excessive levels of the gas.
When a CO detector alarm is triggered, occupants are advised to call 911 or their local fire department and vacate the building immediately. Detectors are calibrated to sound off before CO levels become dangerous and normally cost from $30 to $60 each. Hardeman and fire departments recommend they be installed on each floor adjacent to sleeping quarters.
Carbon monoxide often reaches dangerous levels when furnace chambers are cracked or damaged, vehicles are left running or barbecues are used in attached garages, stoves are left on without adequate ventilation or chimney pipes become blocked.
From left to right, Leamington mayor John Paterson, Doug DeRabbie of the Ontario Insurance Bureau, Leamington Fire Services chief Chuck Parsons, Ontario municipal affairs critic and Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman and Chatham-Kent-Essex MPP Rick Nicholls present a portion of the 96 carbon monoxide (CO) detectors presented to the LFS during a presentation led by Hardeman Tuesday, Dec. 16. Talk radio has my attention
Since the free satellite radio in my vehicle expired, I’ve been listening to local radio stations again. I always like to listen for local news and sports, but I also have a guilty pleasure of loving talk radio. Lynn Martin, Dr. Joy Browne, Mitch Albom and John Tesh are some of my favourites to listen to.
I’m not sure what attracts me to a callin therapist but Dr. Joy just seems to solve problems I didn’t even know existed out there. I really like how she shuts down the complaining and blaming and gets to the root of the problem and always asks what the caller has done to change their situation. She doesn’t let them sit and complain, but rather gives them a plan of action. And like all good advice, it’s up to you to follow through. In the end, the only person you’re fooling is yourself.
Renewed hope in L-Town
T’was the night before Christmas
Sometimes I can’t get over the ‘situations’ people find themselves in. I have to think part of my attraction to the show is that it makes my life seem very normal. And I can’t help but wonder if some of these people just need to say their problems out loud for them to see the answer… And then there are those people who I don’t think listen to themselves at all because if they did, they’d have to hear how ridiculous they sound.
And all through the town
The people who live here
Could not be kept down.
Tornado and vortex
Still fresh in their minds
I like the Lynn Martin Show because they talk about topics in the news and topics that just pique people’s interest. The show accepts phone-ins who express their opinions. No one’s opinion is wrong; it’s just their opinion, and although sometimes it’s hard to remember that everyone has the right to their opinion, it can get difficult when there is ignorance involved.
The good folks of L-Town Were looking for signs.
Signs of recovery
In contrast, I have started listening to the show with one perspective and have been swayed to ‘see’ the other point of view by the end. I’ve been tempted to call in and weigh in on some of the topics, but I’m usually in my vehicle. Sometimes I find myself sitting in the parking lot listening to the end of a certain discussion.
After the great Heinz crash And then like a phoenix It rose from the ash.
Hundreds of jobs Were gone in a jiffy
The only thing I miss about my satellite radio now is the ’80s on 8 and ’70s on 7 channels… Oh well, I can still catch some classic oldies on the local stations and besides, I only drive 15 minutes to work, so I really can’t see spending $200 a year on radio. It’s bad enough I’ve been sucked into the world of Bell TV.
We all knew that Buffett Was just kind of iffy.

Help, I was email hacked!
Special to the Sun By Alison Dyck
While out in the fields
A familiar aroma
The farmers again Were picking their romas.
“Mum, you’ve been attacked in Kiev.” What? “Yes, your email has been hacked.” Panic. “Change your password.”
I access my account to change my password and discover all my contacts have been deleted as have my sent messages, and a new email has been added to the account. I delete the newly attached email. It doesn’t seem to matter. I receive no new emails. Loss momentarily puts me off balance. The phone rings. An old friend suddenly calls, “So you’re not in danger in Kiev? You don’t need immediate cash? You’re safe at home?” We engage in a lovely catch-up conversation, and then, the work begins. I set up a new account. This is actually fun, a new email handle springs to my mind immediately. The name reminds me that I won’t be defeated by the hacker. Then I slowly realize how many places are linked to my old email. I am momentarily overwhelmed. Education on stressors comes to my mind. I cannot avoid the stress the hacker has caused, in some sense I accept the stressor and assert myself to make changes to limit the hacker’s damage. I will not be overcome.
Spare hours are spent accessing everywhere linked to my old email. By midnight I am ready for sleep and actually sleep well. Pouring energy into being proactive has been healthy. Morning comes and I then evaluate my attitude toward the hacker, someone from Nigeria. I mentally address the hacker, “No, you will not prevail against me. I refuse to die a cyberdeath and live in internet fear because of you.” Anger and fear have changed to assertion. An inner voice assures me, “You’re going to be ok.” I am moved to contemplate a recent reminder on praying for one’s enemies and I begin to pray the hacker’s needs will be met. Life must be tough living in Nigeria knowing all the wealth that lies to the north and west in distant lands…
I awake to no spam in my new inbox! There are benefits to being email hacked. No spam, old friend renewals, and I really like my new email handle!
By trailer, by tractor, By basket, by truck,
The flumes were not idle,
The conveyors not stuck.
It will never be perfect, It will never go back, But if not for that company,
The place would be black.
So many had hands
In the plant resurrection, It was fondly remembered In the November election.
The mayor, the councillors And some I have missed
All levels of government
Too many to list.
As the old year closes And the new one takes flight, You look to the future, And the future looks bright.
You should be proud
Old hometown of mine, Stand Strong Leamington, And let your light shine.

an estimated 24,000 items were delivered to families in need by many volunteers. This yearly event depends on the generosity of the citizens of Leamington, who supply the cans and cash donations for the LDSS Can Drive. Congratulations to the
girls who won the trophy in a very close race with the boys. LDSS and UMEI students filled the baskets on Friday, Dec. 19. The cash donations, which are used to purchase items locally for the baskets, along with product donations from area farmers, canneries and busi-
nesses, all help to fill these baskets to overflowing.
The entire operation is run by an army of volunteers who gladly give their time to make this such a successful community program. Merry Christmas to all from the Leamington Goodfellows!
Christmas Lunch becomes tradition at St-Michel
By Bryan Jessop
It may only be a small percentage of Leamington’s population that speaks French, but community support knows no language barrier when it comes to Christmas holiday generosity.
Ecole St-Michel’s Christmas Lunch officially became a tradition with its second annual installment Thursday, Dec. 18. Full, all-you-can-eat servings of turkey and all the trimmings were offered to each of the school’s 560 students, 40 staff members, volunteers and clergy members for a total of about 650 recipients.
Every bite of the 32 turkeys (500 pounds), 300 pounds of potatoes, 120 pounds of corn and countless desserts and fresh produce came courtesy of individuals from both within the school and beyond, including a lengthy list of clubs, organizations and businesses. Food was prepared by professional chefs and a large group of volunteers led by Hippie Chick Café owner Christine Bedard.
Organizations stepping forward to help prepare the meal included the Leamington Lebanese Club, Leamington District Secondary School, Rhine Danube Club, the school’s Parent Advisory Committee and Roma Club. Fresh vegetables were donated by Mastronardi/Sunset Produce while Lakeside Bakery donated half of the 1,000 buns.

The first of two waves of meals were served up by parent volunteers to junior kindergarten to Grade 3 students. The second half fed Grades 4 to 8 once the younger students headed outdoors for recess. Everyone partaking in the event was offered as much as they wanted to eat. Afterwards, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and one of their elves paid a visit for eagerlyawaiting students.
The organization of the meal began two weeks in advance with food preparation beginning Monday, Dec. 15.
“This is a great way for students to understand the spirit of giving, friendship and community,” said Ecole St-Michel PAC co-president Rose Ageitos. “The support we’ve seen from families and the entire community is just incredible. The generosity is really amazing. It was phenomenally-well organized this year.”
Santa and Mrs. Claus visit Gore Hill P.S.
Last week, Gore Hill Public School students and staff completed their celebration of the 12 Days of Christmas. Beginning December 5, the school’s Principal Council planned a special holiday themed activity each day. One of the most anticipated events was the visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Selecting wine for your holiday meal
Let’s Wine Together
By Carmen Danner
Please submit wine-related questions for publication and I will also share my experiences with local wines. You can reach me at grapeaspirations@gmail.com and on Twitter at @gr8grapz.
This issue’s question is this: “I’m looking for something ‘different’ for Christmas dinner… what do you suggest?
There are many options, depending on how you prepare your Christmas turkey and how adventurous you are willing to be with your wine choices. Straying (blissfully) from the tried and true Chardonnay opens your senses to a world of flavours and combinations.
There are many white wine options, starting with a sparkling wine. Not just for wedding toasts anymore, I’d recommend “Extra Dry” as it will likely have more fruit flavours than a “brut”. Riesling and Gewurztraminer present a fruity and aromatic complement, respectively, to a lightly-seasoned bird (salt, pepper, sage) – most local wineries carry one or the other of these two, or a blend of both. A bit crisper and lighter-bodied wine would see you enjoying a Pinot Gris/Pinot Grigio, which works well with more of a garlic/onion seasoning base. For a heartily-seasoned bird (oregano, thyme, rosemary, basil, onion, garlic), I’d recommend a Sauvignon Blanc or a fruitier version of a traditional Chardonnay for some mouth-tingling contrast.
On to red wines. The lighter-seasoned bird would pair well with a Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon while the more richly-seasoned bird would do better with a spicier Cabernet Franc or a more complex Syrah, all of which balance well with the assorted flavours of the holidays. There’s also Chambourcin, a wonderfully bright mediumbodied but robust red wine – one of the few red grapes whose juice is actually red. It may take a bit of legwork before you find this grape as it is not widely grown in Canada and can be hard to come by in the LCBO, but definitely worth the search!
Don’t forget the option that holds a delightful and refreshing middle ground – rosé. Most wineries that produce a rosé today are straying from the highly sweetened version of the ’80s, so don’t turn your nose up at the thought until you’ve actually tried some. Almost all of the wineries in the Lake Erie North Shore produce a version of the rosé and you can find some refreshing options at your local LCBO.
Above all, keep an open mind and let your taste buds be your guide.

Leamington and Mersea Historical Society re-elects executive
At a Leamington and Mersea Historical Society meeting in early December, the membership re-elected the executive to another term. The executive remains with Paul Bunnett-Jones as president, Bob McCracken as vicepresident, Neil Fotheringham as past-president, Sandra Hughes as treasurer, Carolyn Coad as secretary, Bill Gay as head of the MCR restoration, and Scott Holland as press secretary.
Many events are planned for 2015 and one of the biggest will be another raffle with prizes matching or bettering last year’s. Watch the Sun for more details.
As well, it is hoped that the annual Heritage Awards will be as popular as ever and arrangements are being made with the Caldwell First Nation to have a showing of some of the museum’s Native artifacts.
History continues to be alive and well with the Society and the next meeting will be held in late January.
The Society wishes everyone in Leamington and the surrounding area of Essex County all the best during the holidays.
Traffic stop leads to tobacco seizure
On December 17, just before 2:30 p.m., ChathamKent OPP conducted a traffic stop on a Dodge Caravan on Highway 401 westbound, near Harwich Road, for a traffic violation.
During subsequent OPP traffic investigation, the officer located a quantity of unmarked cigarettes. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was uninsured and the driver’s licence was suspended.
As a result, the 43-yearold male driver, a 41-yearold male passenger and a 39-year-old female passenger, all from Leamington, have been charged with possession of unmarked cigarettes and possession of unmarked cigarettes for the purpose of sale, under the Tobacco Tax Act.
In addition, the driver was also charged with driving while under suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, and the female passenger was charged with permitting the motor vehicle to be operated without insurance, under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

Five Rs to a greener holiday
The holiday countdown is on, and festive feelings are heightened by the presence of twinkling lights and Michael Bublé carols in the air. This is also the time when last-minute shoppers flood the stores for a final mad dash for gifts.
In the midst of all the commotion, do you end up spending extra on everything including items for just-in-case situations? This year take a greener route, saving your wallet and the environment with a few tips and tricks.
LDSS Students Visit M.D. Bennie P.S.
Reduce: Reducing the holiday excess is a start. Determine what you’re willing to let go of while still having a merry time. We often overlook the carbon footprint of our holiday activities. Reducing gas consumption by consolidating multiple shopping trips into one can help reduce carbon emission, save time and costs. Alternatively, e-gifts and symbolic adoptions from charities can be great time-savers and meaningful presents.
LDSS students visited Grade 1 and 2 students at M.D. Bennie Public School Wednesday, December 17 to spread holiday cheer as part of the Think Global Act Local United Way grant. LDSS paired up with their elementary school partners and John McGivney to read books and share part of their Literacy Block. Students enjoyed the opportunity to ask Snoil (the LDSS mascot), Olaf and Elsa questions and sang songs from the Frozen movie to celebrate the exciting visit! (Submitted photo)

Bob Stephens of Essex owns a flashy 1964 Thunderbird convertible, a far cry from his first car which he says he will never forget: “The other guys in town were driving hot cars while I was driving something akin to a limo. My friend Bob Sanford always referred to my black 1954 DeSoto as ‘The Mafia Car.’
“The PowerFlite tranny was a bit of a problem. If the car was not completely stopped when the tranny was shifted into reverse, the reverse band on the tranny would snap. There was more than one instance of my quick shift breaking the band. Thus no reverse and we just pushed it backwards until I could get it fixed. Fortunately, Hyatt Motors in Leamington was able to replace the reverse band in about an hour for $50.
“The car had a lot of chrome and the hubcaps covered the full wheel and had bronze centres depicting Mr. DeSoto (a Spanish explorer in America). The twin deck aerials were not common on large cars like this one and really looked sharp.
“When I was dating my girlfriend Judy Royce, who later became my wife, whenever I would pick her up at school, her girlfriends thought she was going out with an older man with a big DeSoto.
“My dad bought the car from Ray Whitesell who at that time was a Leamington cop. I bought it from Dad around 1959, when I was 19, drove it for about 3 years, and sold it for $300 to Winston Upcott. By that time, I was working at Radio Station CJSP engineering department in town and thought I needed a better car. The DeSoto lasted another year or so and was rusting badly. I think it went to an auto graveyard. Meanwhile, I had moved on to a 1960 Pontiac 4-door hardtop purchased from a Heinz exec, who had just been given a company car. Compared to the DeSoto, the ’60 Pontiac hardtop was a much better looking car for a young guy. But I never really forgot about my DeSoto.”

The first DeSoto rolled off the assembly line in 1928, thanks to Walter P. Chrysler. That was a busy year for Mr. Chrysler because he also bought the Dodge Company and added Plymouth to his line-up of vehicles. He was now competing with Ford and GM, and people began talking about the “Big Three.” The DeSoto remained in production for 32 years. Competition from other makes squeezed it out of the market place in December 1960, with only a few 1961 DeSotos built.

All I want for Christmas
Jessop’s Journal
Like many North Americans who’ve reached middle age or beyond, I find myself bewildered by the things kids are craving for Christmas nowadays. When I was a kid, “the big one” was a Green Machine — basically the custom Harley chopper of tricycles. The traditional handle bars were replaced by a pair of “shifters” that would steer the trike when moved back and fourth. The front wheel was a huge “pizza cutter” while the back two looked like miniature drag racing slicks. As the name indicated, the majority of the vehicle was what Chrysler would have called “Sassy Grass” green earlier that decade.
It was a symbol of 1970s coolness that has since made a modest comeback, albeit with some noticeably altered aesthetics. Transformers that originally surfaced in the 1980s have been treated to a revival placing them atop many a Christmas wish list. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — popular for what I believe is actually the third time — are also back with a vengeance in virtually every toy department.
Girls, it seems, are into any bit of merchandise representing Disney’s “Frozen” and a line of dolls that in my mind look like a series of undead Barbies. Apparently, they belong to the “Monster High” franchise.
Weird.
I can’t even begin to relate to the video games that kids want in this day and age. When I was a kid, Atari was the big thing. In the medieval-based game Adventure, your character was a little square that might be attached to a key, arrow (sword?) or any other tool you might need in your quest to find the glowing chalice. The keys of course unlocked castle doors while the arrow/sword was used to slay dragons that looked more like wingless, mutated ducks.
For 2014, it’s the latest version of Grand Theft Auto (V, VI, XXIV or whatever it might be now). From what I heard, there are some “actions” that can take place in the game that go well beyond anything we might have done in Space Invaders, Pac Man or Yars’ Revenge (the third at which I was the undisputed master). If you’ve already bought the game for someone who isn’t old enough to vote, you might want Santa to send it back to the North Pole before Christmas morning. If it’s already been unwrapped, perhaps an “accident” could happen to the game cartridge (or whatever they’re called now). Maybe it suddenly falls in the toilet and gets flushed. It might somehow end up in your driveway and get run over by the minivan a dozen times or so. It could even unexplainably get covered in barbecue sauce, tossed into the neighbours’ yard and be chewed to pieces by their Rottweiler.
Oops!
Every sports fan of course has a list of his or her own. Yes, I always make my traditional wishes of a Sutherland Cup for the Flyers and a Schmalz Cup for the Sharks. I’d also like a Montreal Canadiens watch, but I can’t justify it when my all-too trusty Timex just won’t die. Speaking of the Habs, I’d also like their coach Michel Therrien to stop screwing around with the roster. It’s hard to ‘gel’ with your linemates when they’re always someone different or being sent back and fourth between the Canadiens and AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs. The team should feel compelled to win the Cup this season in Beliveau’s honour and it’s not going to happen when players don’t even know who’ll join them on the red line from one game to the next.
If you’re listening Santa, I’d also like at least a playoff appearance for the Buffalo Bills. They’re due, to say the least. Oh, and I’d also like to see the notion of the Plymouth Whalers relocating to Chatham-Kent become a reality. For one, it’d put more Ontario in the Ontario Hockey League. Secondly, I’d like to take my son to an OHL game in C-K some day. Nothing against the Spitfires, but I really don’t enjoy driving through Windsor or any other city with a six-digit population. Honestly, that would be about all, other than a fullframe DSLR camera to shoot indoor sporting events (typical arena and gymnasium lighting is not easy to work with). I hope Santa decides that I’ve been good this year. I’ve made my share of mistakes in stories appearing in both papers (including giving scoring credit to a Sharks player who was sidelined with an injury at the time — my apologies to Riley Enns, the Shark who actually scored the goal), but the proofreading team at the Sun/Journal catches virtually all of the spelling and grammatical errors. Regardless of who gets what, I just hope everyone here in the LeamingtonWheatley area has a Merry Christmas and a great new year. Stay safe and see you in 2015! BRYAN
Lions bounce back against Nobles
By Bryan Jessop
It wasn’t the last game of the playoffs, but otherwise a recent LDSS girls hockey game unfolded according to the lyrics of Stompin’ Tom Connors’ “The Hockey Song.”
Leamington bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit and hung on for a 2-1 victory against its fellow 2A rival Belle River Nobles to improve its regular season to an even 4-4-0.
Belle River’s Tanya Candido (a.k.a. “Bobby” according to Connors’ song) opened the scoring just prior to the first period’s halfway mark, sending a low wrist shot past LDSS goalie Natalie Edmonson. The 1-0 lead stood as the teams faced off for the middle stanza.
The Nobles seemed poised for a shutout victory, as a Leamington double power play running a minute and nine seconds in duration proved uneventful for the hosts. With less than two minutes remaining, Shannon Fehr finally solved Sarah Hoster with a high, sharp-angle shot from the right of the Belle River net. Emily Hyatt was credited with the only assist. The deadlock remained intact for the contest’s second buzzer.
Leamington team captain Kim Goyeau provided the game winner about two-and-a-half minutes into the third as she picked up her own rebound and sent it into the bottom right corner of Hoster’s net. The home team’s defense hung on to prevent any further scoring, despite finishing the game short handed.
The curfew buzzer sounded to complete the game with 58 seconds showing on the timer.
“We came out a little flat, but the girls recovered to play a great second half,” said Lions coach Jordan Davison. “Belle River’s an older, aggressive team, but our girls stood up to them and played hard. Our defense has been playing well — the defensive pairings we’ve got out there seem to work. Goyeau and (Abbey) Hopper have played great hockey for us.”
The win was the second in a row for LDSS, who defeated the General Amherst Bulldogs by the same 2-1 score Wednesday, Dec. 10, also at Unico Arena. The Lions will again play General Amherst Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex following the holiday break.
The Lions are currently in a race with 3A Villanova for third place in the WECSSAA Tier I conference.
WFS Bantams entertain with two shutouts
Mon. Dec. 15th the boys in white travelled to Harrow to play their second place rivals (Harrow # 2). A team that hosts both talent and charisma, this Harrow team has been tough to beat all year.
Southpoint’s WFS Bantams rushed the puck, creating several opportunities throughout the first 7 minutes of play, cycling the puck and testing the opposing goalie on several occasions.
Finally, with 38 seconds left in the first period, Aiden Rodrigues rushed the puck over the red line, passing to Derrick Antunes and over to Captain Dante Butera for a glorious top-shelf goal.
The second period was exciting with grinding by both teams. Tyler Dibbley held tight in goal as he faced well over 33 shots by the end of the second.
Heading into the third the WFS team showed their heart and skated hard, creating defensive pressure holding off their counterparts right down to the last second.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of WFS. The score
sheet was rather blank, but the game was one of the most exciting games played all year. Congratulations to the team and especially to goalie Tyler Dibbley who faced 41 shots to earn that welldeserved shutout.
Sun. Dec. 21 WFS played host to Tilbury/Kent #7. Both teams battled through the first to see WFS pop 2 quick goals.
The first goal went to a hard working and well deserved Tyler Blake, blowing through the defense to snap a rolling puck past the net minder. This kid comes to the rink day in day out,
working very hard, battling in corners and grinding both ways offensively and defensively. He was assisted by line mates Donnie Pardo and Cade Price, who both opened up the neutral zone with great positioning.
The second goal was hammered in the lower corner by a stifling slap shot unassisted by Aiden Rodrigues.
The third goal came unassisted by the speed of Derrick Antunes, who usually unselfishly is the play maker and passes the puck off.
This team continues to rally and prove that it belongs in first place by early January 2015.
Kiera Jackson of the Lions and a Belle River forward battle for the puck up against the back of the Leamington net during a Tuesday, Dec. 16 WECSSAA girls hockey match at Unico Arena. The Lions gave up the first goal, but bounced back for a 2-1 victory.

Sun Stars weekend split
On Friday, Dec. 19 the Sun Stars Bantam B team hosted the Compuware U14 team from Plymouth, Michigan. The game started fast and the pace continued throughout the game with both teams trading chances but failing to bulge the twine.
Compuware got on the board first early in the third period on a broken play that ended up in the back of the Stars net for a 1-0 lead. The Stars kept battling but with just under a minute left, Compuware scored again to go up 2-0.
The Stars battled to the final whistle and managed to get one past the Compuware netminder in the closing seconds to make the final 2-1. Bailey Brown got the late marker for the Stars with assists going to Bryanna Rodrigues and Emily Hyatt.
On Saturday, Dec. 20 the Stars hosted the Jets from Ilderton. The Stars scored early and often in this game on their way to a 7-0 defeat of the Jets.
Bailey Brown opened the scoring for the Stars after a lead pass from Bryanna Rodrigues. Bailey Brown scored again in the first period on passes from Emily Hyatt and Bryanna Rodrigues and the Stars were on their way.
The Stars would go on to score three more times in the second to make it 5-0. Kennedy Hodgson got it started with her first of four on the night assisted by Grace Hyatt. Kennedy scored again just two minutes later with assists going to Corinne Jackson and Morgan Brown. Charly Demers would close out the scoring in the second period on a shot from the point after a pass from Emily Hyatt. Kennedy Hodgson would go on to score two more in the third with assists going to Mackenzie Wilson and Corinne Jackson and the Jets went down to a 7-0 defeat. Natalie Edmondson earned the shutout in net for the Stars.
The Stars next game action is Sunday, Dec. 28 in Chatham at Memorial Arena, 10:30 a.m. Go Stars Go!

My First Christmas In Heaven
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny lights like Heaven’s stars reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear,
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear,
But the sound of music cannot compare with the Christmas choir up here.
I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me,
I see the pain inside your heart.
But I’m not so far away,
We really aren’t apart.
So be happy for me dear ones,
You know I hold you dear,
And be glad I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above,
I send you each a memory of my undying love.
After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold,
It was always most important in the stories that Jesus told.
Please love each other as the Father said to do,
For I cannot count the blessings or love He has for you.
So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear,
Remember I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year
Love Don
To all my family & friends. Special wishes for my mother Alice, late father Wayne, and brother Jason & family, Muriel & Kirn. From Lowell Hopper in Lillooet, B.C.
Our lives go on without you, but nothing is the same. We try to hide our heartache when someone speaks your name. No one knows how much we miss you, no one knows the bitter pain We have suffered since we lost you, life has never been the same. Missing you more today than yesterday. Until we meet again. Love Always, Mom and Your Family.
Power play lifts Sharks above Lakers
By Bryan Jessop
The Wheatley Sharks have again climbed above the .500 mark, thanks in part to an effective power play. The Sharks cashed in on four of nine man-advantage opportunities in a 7-3 victory over the last-place Wallaceburg Lakers at Wheatley Area Arena. The victory at the time kept the Sharks squarely in the middle of the pack — one point behind fourth-place Blenheim and one point ahead of sixth-place Alvinston. The other half of Wheatley’s special teams also got the job done, twice killing off five-on-three Laker advantages.
“It was due to come alive,” Sharks head coach Ken Galerno said of his team’s power play. “It’s something we’ve been working on, so it’s nice to see it come together like that.”
The Saturday, Dec. 20 victory came despite the fact that injuries continue to plague the Wheatley squad. Calyn Kir, Dylan Enns and Antonio Ciampa were unable to suit up for the game, with the latter expected to miss the rest of the season. Devin Shannon was added to the list of wounded players late in the game against Wallaceburg with what appeared to be a separated shoulder. Brendon Anger also misssed the game, as he was scheduled to attend a National Lacrosse League draft pool combine that weekend.
During a power play, Austin Thompson opened the scoring about 12-and-a-half minutes into the first, sending a wrist shot under the crossbar and past goalie Joel Sowinski after taking passes from Brett Bowman and Lucas Raffoul. Wallaceburg got even with just under four minutes left in the period when Trevor Waller swatted a rebound into the right side of Conner MacKinnon’s net.
Wheatley regained its lead 1:44 into the second period — again with the man advantage — when a lot shot from the point was deflected high and over Sowinski’s shoulder. The Raffoul goal was assisted by Michael Travis and Bowman. Conor Marontate scored the Sharks’ first evenstrength tally during a scramble in front of the Wallaceburg net. After Travis and Nolan Gardiner shots were blocked, Marontate snapped the loose puck past a heavily-screened Laker netminder.
Raffoul and the Wheatley power play continued to inflict damage to Wallaceburg from there, as the Leamington native added two more power play tallies before the second buzzer sounded. Raffoul tapped the puck over the goal line after Sowinski dropped a save at the 16:12 mark and then during a five-on-three advantage with 22 seconds remaining, slid a low shot into the net’s left side. Brian Johnson and Bowman were credited with assists on Raffoul’s second goal while Thompson and Gardiner drew helpers on his third. The later goal was scored against Scotty Gray, who replaced Sowinski after the starting netminder suffered a collision-related injury.
Thompson buried his second of the night after making a series of elusive maneuvers past Wallaceburg defenders before sending a high, deflected shot past Gray. Travis and Gardiner assisted.
With Shark penalties piling up late in the game, the Lakers’ bench opted to pull their goalie for a six-on-three attack. The strategy produced another two goals — first from Josh Berkvens and then by Alex Ritchie — nine seconds apart. The productiveness of the decision was
cut in half with seconds on the clock, as Scott Florence buried an empty netter from a few feet inside the Laker blueline near the boards after being set up by Jimmy Ciacelli.
Four Sharks finished the game with three-point nights, but were led by Raffoul’s three goals and single assist. The hat trick doubled Raffoul’s goal production so far this season.
“He’s had quite the week,” Galerno said of Raffoul. “He just caught fire all of a sudden, and that’s what we need — players to come up with secondary scoring.”
The Sharks built up a 4539 shots advantage while the Lakers were two for nine on the power play. MacKinnon stopped 35 shots while Adam Leboeuf blocked one through two plays where the veteran netminder had to step off the ice for equipment repair.
The loss was Wallaceburg’s 14th in a row while the win snapped a two-game losing skid for Wheatley.
The Sharks’ next home game will be played Saturday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. against the Amherstburg Admirals. Next up will be a Sunday, Dec. 28 homeice contest against the Alvinston Flyers starting at 3 p.m.

Mark Jraiche led the Cardinal Carter attack with nearly as many points as the entire Vortex team. His 31 points included several three pointers. Raffoul accounted for most of the balance, chipping in with 11 points. On Thursday, the Cougars travelled across town to defeat the LDSS Lions by a score of 57-39. Jraiche and Raffoul led with 37 and 11 points, respectively.
The
Lions edge Cougars in boys hockey
By Bryan Jessop
After a hiatus of at least seven years, the Battle of the Big Cats finally returned to the ice in WECSSAA boys hockey.
The Cardinal Carter Cougars and rival Leamington Lions met at Heinz Arena Wednesday, Dec. 17 for a regular-season contest that was preceded by a puck drop performed by Leamington mayor John Paterson. The 1:15 p.m. game was attended by several students representing both schools. Students were given the option to ‘buy’ their way out of afternoon classes for nominal fees to attend the early game.
Once the dust had settled, the Lions emerged as winners by hanging onto a 3-2 advantage. Despite heavy offensive pressure by LDSS through most of the game, Cardinal Carter met the challenge and remained in competition with impressive goaltending by Brandon Lavadan and a tough, physical presence at both ends of the rink.
The Cougars struck first after Luc Ribble took control of
the puck just outside his own team’s blue line and raced in on Leamington goaltender Matt Ciliska. With nine seconds on the first-period time clock, Ribble buried a shot into the lower left corner of the Lions’ net.
The advantage stood for approximately seven seconds until Jake Lewsaw, situated to the left of the CC net, somehow found a short-side gap to foil Lavadan with a high wrist shot as the clock wound down to 1.9 seconds. Jesse Fast was credited with an assist.
“He’s crafty and shows a lot of patience with the puck,” said Lions’ coach Butch Rickeard of Lewsaw. “He’s a valuable player both on and off the ice — he shows good leadership in the dressing room.”
Leamington took the lead about five minutes into the second period during a delayed Cougars’ penalty. From directly in front of the net, Noah Santos sent a knee-high wrist shot into the Cardinal Carter net after taking a pass from Jack Towle.
The two teams agreed to forego the standard second-intermission ice resurfacing to avoid a curfew buzzer and play a full 15-minute third period. The Lions came up with the game winner on a deflected shot that arched up and into the left side of the Cougars net before any of the 12 players on the ice could locate the puck. Fast assisted on the final Leamington marker.
The Cougars refused to throw in the towel and cut the lead in half with 1:22 remaining. Gerrid LaSala flung a wrist shot into the top left corner of Ciliska’s net after being set up by Scott Wigfield to put a 3-2 score on the board.
“It was a tie game really, excluding the fluky bounce (for the Lions’ third goal),” said Cougars coach Ted Wigfield. “I was impressed with our effort. We played as a team. The teams seemed pretty evenly matched — we just didn’t shoot enough, although our goaltending was really solid.”
“Both teams played well,” Rickeard said in agreement. “Our guys were really excited to play this one. The intensity was definitely there. We capitalized on our opportunities, which is something we have to do more often. When our veteran line steps up like this, it helps us.”
With the win, the Lions improved to 3-1-2. They suffered their first loss of the season 5-2 a day earlier against undefeated L’Essor — Lewsaw and Jack Towle scored for LDSS. The Cougars’ record fell to 0-5-1.
The teams will meet again Monday, Jan. 19, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. In between, Cardinal Carter will host Riverside Jan. 7 and Lajeunesse Jan. 12, both with 3 p.m. starts. The Lions will travel to Kennedy Jan. 8 before hosting L’Essor Jan. 14 at 3 p.m.

Eighth place or not, the Lambton Shores Predators have made the Flyers earn their two-point nights as of late. Leamington hung on for a 6-5 regulation victory against the Predators Thursday, Dec. 18 at Heinz Arena, nearly surrendering a three-goal advantage established in the later stages of the second period. The last meeting between the two teams, held in Forest, also ended in a slim, one-goal victory for the Flyers — a 1-0 decision Saturday, Dec. 6.
The most recent match featuring the two squads was the first in three 2014-15 games where the Preds managed to score. Lambton Shores put an end to that drought less than four minutes into the first, when Ethan Sarfati managed to tap the puck over the goal line during a scramble in Trevor Wheaton’s crease. Travis Campbell, playing his fourth game as a Flyer, tied the score about three-and-a-half minutes later on a delayed Predators penalty. With Wheaton pulled for the extra attacker, Campbell chipped the puck about two feet into the air and over fallen Lambton Shores goalie Andrew Harriman-Duke. Zack Guilbeault and Alex Friesen drew assists.
It was roughly another three-and-a-half minutes before Leamington scored the go-ahead goal on a Friesen shot that hit a stick before the puck flipped onto its side and rolled over the goal line undetected. Colin Moore was credited with the only assist.
The Flyers outshot their guests 20-6 through the opening 20 minutes, but could not expand on their lead to start the second.
Eric Henderson took advantage of a triple minor called against Lambton after the first-period buzzer, releasing a shot at the 51-second mark that was deflected and eluded Harriman-Duke’s five hole. Chris Scott and Mitch Amante were credited with assists.
The Predators pulled to within a goal when Andrew Kim swatted a rebound past Wheaton for a 3-2 score. Leamington again replied with a power play tally when Amante took a Kyle Quick and Tyler Duarte set up and sent a waist-high wrist shot past the Predators’ netminder.
Kyle Perkowski appeared to put the game away with nearly six minutes left in the second period. Taking Campbell and Jacob McGhee feeds, he maneuvered around a Lambton Shores defender and tapped an icelevel, point-blank shot over the goal line.
What some may have assumed were insurance goals turned out to be anything but in the third frame, where the Lambton team stormed back to make it a 5-4 game with about eight minutes remaining. Luke McEachnie buried a wrist shot during a Predators’ rush before Sarfati accounted for his second of the night by sending a rebound into the bottom left corner of Wheaton’s net.
Flyers hold off Predators
By bryan jessop
Quick responded for Leamington exactly a minute after the second Sarfati marker, flipping a deflected shot over Harriman-Duke’s stick for his 10th goal and 35th point of the season. Amante and Duarte assisted on the goal, the Flyers’ third of the night on the power play.
With their net emptied during a power play to effectively produce a six-onfour, the Preds again reduced the deficit to a single goal. Ryan Fraser blasted a screened slap shot from the point as the clock ticked down to 27 seconds of regulation tie.
Wheaton and his defensemen — who were missing Blaine Bechard and Ryan Muzzin — repelled the last-ditch effort to force overtime from Predators forwards.
The Flyers outshot their guests 47-26 and went three for nine on the power play as Lambton Shores scored once on three man-advantage opportunities.
“We let them back into the game,” said Flyers coach Tony Piroski. “We tried to sit on a lead and figured we could just throw our sticks and gloves out there, but this league doesn’t work like that. We’ve got to play smarter and more disciplined.”
For Amante, the three-point performance was the first night back after serving a multi-game suspension assessed during a Nov. 26 game in LaSalle.
“It was fun to be back with the guys, to get back into it,” he said.
Like Piroski, however, the veteran forward was not content with his team’s Dec. 18 effort.
“We have a lot to work on,” Amante noted. “There’s no reason to let in five goals in one game, especially with the goaltending and defense we’ve got.”
Earlier this month, the Flyers became the first Western Conference team to mathematically secure a playoff spot. Thursday’s win combined with a 6-3 victory in London 24 hours earlier improved Leamington’s record to 26-6-1, good for a nine-point lead over second-place Sarnia.
“We’re happy to have that record, but we’re not as good as it suggests,” Piroski said. “There’s still a lot of room for improvement. It’s not like we’ve been mopping the floor with the other eight teams. We’ve been fortunate. We’ve had some breaks and good goaltending when we need it.”
In Wednesday’s game against the Nationals, the Flyers rebounded from a 2-0 deficit at the first buzzer courtesy of second-period goals by Henderson and a pair from
Duarte. Campbell, Guilbeault and Scott chipped in with third-period markers for a 6-2 advantage before Rai Di Loreto finished the scoring for London. Leamington registered a 41-35 shots advantage and went one for five on the power play compared to the Nats’ two for nine. On Sunday, Dec. 21, the Flyers hosted the Sarnia Legionnaires in the continued race for first in the West. Leamington won the afternoon contest 7-4. For more details on the game, see the Wednesday, Jan. 7 edition of the Sun.

The LaSalle Vipers squeaked by the St. Marys Lincolns Wednesday, Dec. 17 with a 5-4 overtime decision. On Thursday, Sarnia defeated St. Thomas 3-2, also in overtime. Friday games included a 2-1 overtime win for St. Thomas over London and another LaSalle victory against St. Marys, this time by a score of 4-1. A trio of Saturday matches featured a 5-2 Lambton Shores win against Sarnia, London’s 4-3 victory over LaSalle and a 3-2 shootout score favouring Chatham over Strathroy. Strathroy defeated St. Marys 10-1 on Sunday while Chatham came out on top 5-4 against St. Thomas in a shootout.

Cougars win first-ever girls hockey game
By Bryan Jessop
The Cardinal Carter girls hockey team may be in fifth place, but they accomplished a couple firsts during their last game of 2014.
The Cougars put one in the team’s record books with its first-ever win in a Thursday, Dec. 18 match against the visiting Massey Mustangs. With the 4-0 score, Cardinal Carter also posted their team’s firstever shutout. The occasion also marked the first time since a late 2013-14 regular season contest — a 7-4 loss against Tecumseh Vista Academy — that the Cougar girls have scored more than three goals in a single game.
“It’s pretty big for us,” said Cougars coach Chris Lapain following the win over Massey. “We got a couple breaks today — we were due for that. The big difference today was sending the puck to their net. Part of it is also putting it in your head if you can win or lose. (Goaltender) Alyee (Church) also played another great game for us.”
After an evenly-matched, scoreless first period, Cardinal Carter’s offense started to gradually take control early in the second. The home team’s forwards took advantage of a double power play to bring the score to 1-0 with 3:38 left in the middle frame. With a crowd in front of the net, a Bryanna Rodrigues shot trickled past netminder Tessa Rupert and over the goal line for the team’s first game-winning goal. Paige Thompson and Gioia Diciocco were credited with assists.
Cardinal Carter’s offense continued to apply pressure in the Mustangs’ zone and was rewarded for its persistence with a Kayla Collison wrist shot from the far confines of the faceoff circle to the right of Rupert’s net. The five-hole shot was set up by Becca Fryer and Louise Lapain less than five minutes into the third.
Collison struck again with just over two minutes remaining. At the end of a one-on-one rush, the Cougar forward sent a backhand shot into the lower right corner of the Massey net for a comfortable 3-0 lead. Fryer drew the only assist.
The scoring ended 22 seconds later when Rodrigues potted her second of the game. From the left side of the Mustangs’ net and behind the goal line, Rodrigues sent the puck in front of the net, hitting Rupert’s left pad before the puck deflected back and slowly into the net.
Massey coaches protested the goal, insisting that the whistle had sounded before the puck crossed the line. Officials upheld the goal, assisted by Fryer for her third helper of the afternoon.
The curfew buzzer ended the game with 51 seconds on the time clock.
The win avenged a 2-1 loss against Massey Tuesday, Dec. 16 at South Windsor Arena. It also allowed the Cougars to pull within one point of the Mustangs in the race for fourth place in the six-team division. Cardinal Carter has a game in hand over Massey and will play its next game Thursday, Jan. 8 against the Essex Red Raiders at 3 p.m.
Last season, the Cougars finished with a 0-10-0 record, scoring nine goals and allowing 50. Now at the halfway point of 2014-15, they are 1-3-1 with eight goals for and nine against.
