Polar Bear dip raises $35,000 By Deanna Bertrand

KINGSVILLE – Even the warmer temperatures this past weekend couldn’t keep Lake Erie from being icy cold for swimming, but that didn’t deter the brave Polar Bear Dippers from taking on the challenge of a little “shock and thaw.” Nearly a dozen teams consisting of about 80 people gathered on Cedar Island Beach Saturday, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m. after gathering pledges and fundraising for the 20th annual event benefiting Childcan and ACCESS. “We are very thankful for the support,” said Jennifer Watts, Community Engagement for Childcan. “It really

Unions combine for a one-day shutdown of education system

LEAMINGTON – For the first time in two decades, all four major teachers unions in Ontario were on strike the same day, Friday, Feb. 21, shutting down the entire province’s public education system. Union representatives came to Leamington on Friday to support the strikers and supporters who were on Erie Street North in front of PC Member of Provincial Parliament Rick Nicholls’ office. Local elementary and secondary members represented by the four major education unions – AEFO, ETFO, OECTA and OSSTF –stood together against the Ontario government’s education cuts by participating in a one-day strike, in affiliate solidarity, across Windsor-Essex County. This is the first time since the political protest of 1997 that education educators and workers from Ontario’s education union affiliates were out of their classrooms on the same day. Nearly 6,100 local educators and education workers went on strike together in Windsor-Essex County, picketing across all four school boards. “This concerted job action aims to fight against the

deterioration of our education system. AEFO believes that the success of Ontario students is non-negotiable,” stated local AEFO President Mike Hinch. “This is a historic moment where all four affiliates are taking a stand together to defend our world renowned education system. This is an urgent call to action to all parents, public and concerned citizens: stand with us for the future of education, ” stated local ETFO President Adelina

Cecchin. “As front line workers, it is our duty to sound the alarm bell to the communities we serve because the cuts to education will be nothing short of devastating if they come to pass. We are neighbours, friends, family, community members, acquaintances, and we are asking all members of the Windsor-Essex community to stand with us to protect the students of today and tomorrow,” stated local OSSTF President Erin Roy.

Leamington Marina user fees decreased By Bryan Jessop

Boaters making a quick stop in Leamington will be able to save a few dollars when docking at the municipality’s marina. Council voted unanimously in favour of an amendment to Bylaw #55-19, allowing ‘transient mooring’ of three hours or less at Leamington Municipal Marina to be done so free of charge. Previously, under Schedule B of the bylaw, transient mooring for up to three hours per vessel included a charge of $21. “Administration can use this as a means to promote Leamington as a destination,” explained manager of recreation Terry Symons. “The change to fees will have little effect on revenue.” During his presentation, Symons also noted to members of council that the waiving of boater fees for visits of three hours or less will compliment the municipality’s ongoing strategy to bolster tourism in the area. The report also noted that the adjustment to fees could draw boaters who were not originally intending to visit the area to both visit and support Leamington’s uptown and dock at the marina overnight. Boaters who moor at the marina for more than three hours but not overnight pay a ‘day’ fee of $21. The overnight rate is $2.25 per foot of the docked vessel per day. Leamington council approved of the 2020 fee schedule in early October of 2019 through Bylaw #55-19. Amendments to the bylaw were made shortly afterwards, as fee adjustments were required.

LEAMINGTON – On February 18 at approximately 11:30 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended an apartment complex on Lutsch Avenue for an arson investigation. CK having address issues with property tax bills Bills being returned as undeliverable

CHATHAM-KENT – Chatham-Kent residents who have not yet received their interim property tax bill may be among those who have had their bills returned to the municipality for problems with the mailing address. Canada Post is no longer delivering bills based on Rural Route numbers or those that list General Delivery as an option as well as Post Office boxes in some circumstances. Canada Post has returned approximately 200 bills to the municipality as undeliverable. With the March 1 due date on its way, anyone who hasn’t received a tax bill should contact the municipality at 519-360-1998. The municipality can then update the address or offer property owners the opportunity to pick up their tax bills at the Civic Centre, 315 King Street West in Chatham. Failure to receive a tax bill does not exempt a property owner from the requirement from paying taxes. If your tax bill still references a General Delivery or Rural Route number, contact the municipality to ensure the required address updates can be made to allow for future delivery of tax bills.

Bitten by an EBUG

A week ago, the acronym EBUG would’ve barely registered on my radar. Now, it’s burned into my mind for eternity. Saturday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs were the recipients of that EBUG bite. EBUG stands for emergency back-up goaltender and the man’s name is David Ayres. For now, Ayres is enjoying a well-deserved moment in the spotlight, courtesy of the Carolina Hurricanes and the inept Toronto Maple Leafs. He’s been on late night talk shows, Good Mark Ribble Morning America and CNN. I’m happy for him. He deserves his 15 minutes of fame. Uniquely, hockey is probably the only professional sport where something like that could happen. It’s good for the game in the overall picture. Saturday’s game brought a lot of things to the forefront for me. First, the realization that the Leafs’ Thursday night dominance of the Pittsburgh Penguins was a fluke, and second, that this team is not a playoff contender. Sure, they may make the playoffs in spite of themselves, but the heart is not there. Carolina’s back-up goalie, Petr Mrazek, was injured about halfway through the second period, after taking over from James Reimer in the first. When Mrazek left, the Canes had a 3-1 lead. Enter Ayres, who hadn’t played a competitive hockey game in several years. At 42-yearsold, we had to wonder if the Leafs might take it easy on the old geezer. After all, he was their guy. He’s spent the better part of this season taking shots from the Leafs and Marlies as Toronto’s defacto practice goalie. Before two minutes had passed, however, Carolina scored again to make it 4-1 and suddenly my confidence in the Leafs coming back to shell shock the Canes came into question. Then, two quick Toronto goals and I was sure this would end up 10-4 Toronto. As elated I was for a non-NHL player to get a big chance on the biggest stage of them all, I also felt a little bad that my allegiance to my team required me to root against him. Nursing a 4-3 lead into the third, Carolina coach Rod Brind’amour’s face told it all as he exited the bench at intermission. He had settled on the fact that this one would get away from them, at a most inopportune time. Well, it did not. The Leafs came out and laid the proverbial egg, failing to muster any real chances in a full 20 minutes of hockey. In fact, they gave up chance after chance and eventually gave up two more goals to lose 6-3 to their practice rink’s maintenance man. The internet hockey world lost its mind and I had to stifle a flurry of swear words because the grandsons were within earshot. I give credit to Carolina’s players, who did everything in their power to limit the Leafs’ chances. And limit them, they did. I watched that potent Toronto offence stumble and sputter their way to five whole shots, none of which were dangerous. Over the next two days, I managed to gain my composure and carry on with day-to-day life, finally accepting that my team, whom I had great expectations for this year, was not the team I thought they were. Maybe they were just the team they were all along, but I couldn’t face the truth, until now. So the EBUG is now a thing. And while I’m happy for David Ayres, I am not thrilled to have become acquainted with him in this manner.

Passengers boarding the streetcar on Main Street East - There were two streetcar lines running through Kingsville. The main route turned from Division Street North onto Main Street East. The coaches would stop at the passenger station before continuing on towards Leamington. The waiting room for the W.E. & L.S. was located on the north side of Main Street East, directly east of The Grove Hotel, from 1907 to 1932 (when the Greyhound Bus Company took over the space). The second line would continue on Division Street to Mill Street, turn east on Mill, then south on Lansdowne Avenue before continuing east on Park Street and completing the route at the streetcar barns and power house near the harbour. This was the route that brought passengers to the Kingsville Harbour, the Mettawas, and Lakeside Park.

SE Leamington floodplain mapping project hosting third public information centre

LEAMINGTON – The Municipality of Leamington has retained Zuzek Inc. and their sub-consultants SJL Engineering Inc. and Foresight Management Consulting to complete a Floodplain Study for Southeast Leamington that accounts for the influence coastal storms and climate change. The study area includes the flood prone lands between Wheatley Harbour to the northern border of Point Pelee National Park, and the west shore to Sturgeon Creek. Refer to attachment showing the study area. This investigation studies the influence of climate change on future coastal hazards due to changes in storms and ice cover and the associated challenges for the coastal communities of Leamington. Updated floodplain mapping will be generated, along with adaptation options to address the coastal hazards. The ultimate goal is to increase the resilience of the Southeast Leamington community to coastal hazards

through the development of short-term and long-term solutions. As part of the process, a third Public Information Centre (PIC) is scheduled. The goals of this PIC will be to provide: • an overview of the project; • an update on the technical analysis; • an update on floodplain mapping, economic damage potential and emergency access during storms; • an overview of draft adaptation options to increase community resilience to coastal hazards; and • a group discussion to provide feedback on adaptation options. The third PIC features two sessions on Monday, March 30, one from 2-4 p.m. (registration at 1:30 p.m.) and the second from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (registration at 6 p.m.), at Best Western Plus Leamington Hotel and Conference Centre, 566 Bevel Line Road.

Renwick attended the game along with his father, grandfather and his friend Tanner Harrison. The idea to create the sign was inspired by Harrison encouraging Canadiens’ goaltender Carey Price to pose with him for selfies in late February of last year, also during pre-game warm ups in Detroit. RIGHT: Pictured here is Hudson holding up the sign with his dad Justin Renwick and friend Tanner. (Submitted Photos)

IN MEMORIAM If we could visit in heaven Even for a day Maybe for a moment The pain would go away.

In Loving Memory of

Sante Gualdieri

November 1, 1941 – March 2, 2019

We would put our arms around you And whisper words so true That living life without you Is the hardest thing to do. No matter how we spend our days No matter what we do No mornings, dawn or evening falls When we don’t think of you. xxoo It’s been 3 long years, not a day goes by we don’t miss you. Always Loved, Your husband, children and grandchildren.

May the winds of Heaven blow softly And whisper in your ear How much we love and miss you And wish that you were here. Love Angela, Elena, Maria, Felice, Teresa and families

IN MEMORIAM

Many a day your names are spoken, and many an hour you’re in our thoughts. Links in our family chain are broken, you’re gone from our homes but not from our hearts.

HARROW – Local Beavers and Scouts were on the right track, literally, recently in Harrow. The Essex Area Gilwellians hosted the annual Race Day on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Harrow and Colchester South Agricultural Building for Essex Area Scouting, which includes groups from Amherstburg, Belle River, Comber, Cottam, Emeryville, Essex, Harrow, Kingsville and Leamington. Beaver Scouts (ages 5-7) raced their “Beaver Buggies” first, the Cub Scouts (ages 8-10) raced their “Kub Kars” they built second with the Scouts, Venturer Scouts, Rover Scouts and Leaders concluding the day with their races. Scouter Rod Quinney noted the three different races, with the younger two age groups on a track built for six smaller cars while the older age group drag races one-on-one with the Scouts themselves activating the switch when it’s time to switch. “They come as a kit,” explained Quinney, of the cars. “They can modify them however they want.” The cars have to meet size and weight restrictions, he explained, as they compete for awards. The Essex region was competing at the races, with the Windsor area also being comprised of LaSalle and Tecumseh. The tracks were created by Rick Greene, who travels with a group of Scouting leaders and former leaders across southwestern Ontario with them. He noted he travels from Essex County to as far as Woodstock with them. Greene is from Chatham-Kent and travels with the group, who are from various parts of the region, to seven Kub Kar races and eight Scout drag races per season. The big races, he added, are the invitationals planned for Chatham-Kent in April.

Correction

Correction re: Mayor’s Coffee Chats about policing concerns, February 12th issue of The Southpoint Sun. A story about Mayor Hilda MacDonald’s Coffee Chats stated incorrectly that the Leamington Police Services Board meets monthly. The Police Services Board meets every other month on the fourth Tuesday. The next regularly scheduled meeting is March 24.

There were 92 aces by 41 golfers on February 13 at Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens. A hat trick – three consecutive aces on the same hole – by Team 10 (Brian Johnson, Marta Johnson, Nancy Springthorpe) reflected the strong performances. Tom Hyatt had 6 aces as well as the best score over nine holes (16), 18 holes (34) and 36 holes (69). First place at 237 was a tie between Team Aces (Erle Nash, Walter Balsam, Jamie Arquette) and Team Queens (Lyle Rumble, Pete Daudlin, Ron Fick). On February 20, 49 golfers delivered 90 aces led by Laurie Hylton with six. Top scorers were Laurie Hylton (16 over 9 holes), Randy Nash (33 over 18 holes and 73 over 36 holes). The winning teams were Team Kings in first, 243 (Bill Mayville, Murray Cascadden, Walter Balsam), Team 5 in second, 244 (Laurie Hylton, Betty McManus, Mary Anne, Sherman) and Team Queens in third, 245 (Andy Orsini, Donna Bileti, Ron Fick).

WHEATLEY – Three teams, with six wins each, led the 15 players who shot Fun Darts on February 14 – Garry Hope and Terry Taylor – Jean Teylouni, Terri Taylor and Larry Evoy – Peter VanZetten and Richard Howe. Bonnie Evoy, Patricia Suy and Steve Clements won three games followed by Tim Moore and Jim McClellan with two wins. Julie Reid and Gord Crook beat the skunk with one win. Other winners were Vicky Scratch, Sue Schmidt, Claudette and

Sly, Gloria Sheldon, Brenda Hyatt, Julie Reid, Peter Jackson and Hilary Gould. Greg Hodgson won the 50/50 draw. Everyone is welcome to join us at the Meat Draws every Saturday starting at 3 p.m. and running until 5 p.m. Although there were only six pots entered in this year’s Chili Cook-Off, four judges determined that the 2020 chili champ is Dennis Ribble. Way to go, Rib! Kay Shaw earned second place and yours truly came in third. All scores were very close and we thank those who entered to make it a great day for all and to all those, in exchange for a bowl of chili, donated to the Sun Parlour Pipe Band. I’M FREE

Don’t grieve for me now, I’m free. I’m following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to live, to work or play, Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found my peace at the close of the day. If parting has left a void, Then fill it with memories of joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life has been full, I have savoured much – Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Do not lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. Your wings were ready but our hearts were not. Love always, Mom & Jim, sister Sandra, Mark & family, brother David, Stacie & family, sister Amanda, Anthony & family, and Nonno Joe & Nonna Lisa

In memory of our beloved friend,

lORa PERCiBalli

Who left us with broken hearts two years ago, February 26th, 2018

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. A part of us went with you, the day God took you home. If tears could build a stairway, and heartaches make a lane, we’d walk our way to heaven, and bring you back again. In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still, in our hearts you hold a place no one could ever fill. Forever loved by Jane, Jen, Heather, Jen, Tina, Emily, Marisa, Marina, Lisa, MaryBeth, Sara, Kierstyn, Krista & Amy

Kings advance to second round of playoffs

The Kingsville Kings were a little ‘Starstruck’ in their first game of the 2020 playoffs, but returned to their winning ways shortly afterwards. Kingsville found itself on the brink of elimination by dropping the first match in a best-of-three series against the Northumberland Stars, but recovered with wins in Games 2 and 3 for the right to meet the St. George Ravens in the Greater Metro Hockey League (GMHL) South Division semifinals. Game 1 of the quarterfinal series brought the Kings and Stars to the Keeler Centre in Colborne, Ont. Friday, Feb. 21, where the fifth-place Stars posted a 5-1 win over fourth-place Kingsville. The Kings bounced back for Game 2 Sunday, Feb. 23, earning a 5-2 victory to even the series at one apiece to force a third and deciding match. Game 3 of the series, slotted for Monday, Feb. 24, was

also played at The Castle. The Kings won the game in a final score of 4-2, giving themselves the 2-1 series win for the opportunity to appear in the division semifinals. Opening the scoring was Noah Schultz on a feed from Dexter Gourlay. Temirlan Skinderov tied the game for the Stars on a power play opportunity with just over three minutes left in the opening period. In a shorthanded effort, Svoboda brought the Kings back into a one-goal lead, assisted by Kilpimaa exactly eight minutes into the second frame. Gallant evened the score at 2-2 on another Northumberland power play less than three minutes later. Jerry Kilpimaa however potted the game winner at even strength after being set up by Pavel Svoboda. Zachary Dillen provided the insurance tally 11 minutes into the third, unassisted. A schedule for the best-of-five South Division semifinals between the Kings and Ravens was not available by press deadline.

Still cool 60 years later

What looked cool 60 years ago in the west end of Toronto still looks cool today. Al “Fireball” Rouhinen is leaning against his 1940 Ford coupe with red primer instead of paint, with port-a-walls instead of real whitewalls and with no hubcaps on his black steel wheels. He could have stood beside the car with one foot on the running board, or knelt down in front of it. But he chose to slouch against the car itself, taking advantage of Bill Sherk the fact that the front fenders curved inward toward the grille, providing the perfect place for the owner to make himself comfortable. And check out the wind-blown hair, easily converted to an Elvis-style bouffant. The open neck shirt with the vertical stripes made a guy look taller. And the shirt itself is hanging loose. Why tuck it in? And the jeans rolled up slightly at the bottom, another nice touch. And are those dark shoes moccasins? The radio aerial pulled in all the latest rock ’n’ roll blasting out from the dashboard and Al was a big fan of that music. He operated a speed shop called “Draggin’ Unlimited” at O’Connor and St. Clair Avenue in the east end of Toronto, and after the shop closed for the night, Al and his wife cranked up the music and danced the night away inside the store! In 1960, Al and a buddy drove his ’40 Ford coupe to Michigan to visit the Detroit Dragway at Sibley and Dix (it opened the previous year). A guy from New Mexico set himself up beside the drag strip with a louver punching press. How could “Fireball” Al resist? He took off his hood and had 107 louvers punched in it. Now his car looked very intimidating, but whenever it rained, it was hard to start. Al bought the ’40 while living at home. His dad said if he buys an old car, he’ll be kicked out. Al asked his friend Martti if he could live in his basement if he got evicted. Martti said OK, then Al bought the car. But everything turned out cool. His dad had owned a 1941 Studebaker years earlier and said a ’40 Ford coupe was okay! I’m always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca

Sharks eliminated in six games By Bryan Jessop

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks’ Stobbs Division quarterfinal series against the Essex 73’s did not end on the same positive note in which it began. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the best-ofseven series, the Sharks hit a wall along their opposition’s goal line, allowing Essex to claim the next four games and advance to the division’s semifinals against the Lakeshore Canadiens. Wheatley won Game 1 2-1 in double overtime in Essex and then earned a Game 2 victory on home ice by a score of 5-3, but wound up on the wrong side of a 1-0 defensive battle for Game 3 and saw the 73’s tie the series in Game 4 in a 4-1 decision despite scoring the first goal. Game 5 concluded in another one-goal heartbreaker for the Sharks, who started the scoring on a Tallas Smith effort six minutes and 44 seconds into the second frame. Owen Meyerink tied the game early in the third for Essex. Despite outshooting the hosts 23-20, Wheatley was denied another shot at overtime when a trio of former Leamington Flyers broke the deadlock

with 18 seconds remaining. Jack Sanko scored the game winner, assisted by Preston Corp and Bryce O’Brien. Game 6 brought the teams back to Wheatley Arena Friday, Feb. 21, where they were greeted by a crowd of 731 fans.

“We battled hard right up to the end, but unfortunately, our offense dried up.” — Josh Carnevale

Again, the Sharks started the scoring before the 73’s replied with tying and game-winning goals. During a power play after two scoreless periods, Josh Talerico wired a slap shot from the outer perimeter of the faceoff circle to the right of Connor Meyerink’s net that found the mesh at waist height. Assists went to Braedon Caetano and Jordan Gualtieri. Sanko evened the score on an Essex man advantage by tapping a loose puck over the goal line during a scram-

ble in Kyle Metson’s crease. Conor Dembinski potted the game winner with a wrist shot from the left of the Sharks’ goal after a faceoff in the Wheatley zone. The Sharks pulled Metson for the sixth skater with just over two minutes left, but the 73’s sealed the win on empty netters by Darcy Haupt and Curtis Jackson. The Sharks outshot the visitors 34-31 and went one for six on the power play as Essex was one for five. “We battled hard right up to the end, but unfortunately, our offense dried up,” explained Sharks head coach Josh Carnevale. “Game 5 was the same as Game 6 — we battled, we competed, but we couldn’t capitalize on our chances while they did. I thought we were the better team in five of six games, but we couldn’t score goals. The way our players worked up to the very end is a credit to them. Hopefully, we can build on that for next year.” For the 2020-’21 campaign, the Sharks will lose Talerico, Matt Taylor and Alixe Saliba as overagers. Carnevale explained that the coaching staff will have a better idea of which players may return for next season following exit meetings.

Tyke Flames enjoy Winter Classic Tournament,

The Flames, a Southpoint Tyke team thoroughly enjoyed their experience at the Southpoint Breakaway Winter Classic. They were one of many teams at the tournament that got gym time with bouncy castles, pizza and some good fast pace hockey. The team played six half-hour games and started out a bit disorganized, but as they progressed through the tournament their play improved. Although no scores were kept, it was a successful tournament for them in that everyone showed development. The team has been working on position and three players who were exemplary in this aspect were Kylie Klassen, Rowan Wall and Kyla Wiper. Kylie set up numerous players for goals. Rowan played a great two-way game and Kyla had her first goal of the season.

Mason Reid, Easton Reimer and Easton Flaming each took a turn in net and performed admirably. They also played out and Mason ended up with a few goals. Rounding out the forward positions were Lucas MelocheTrealout, Ethan Prior and Evan Williams. Lucas did some great back-checking on a number of occasions. Ethan battled for the puck several times and was getting knocked down, but he got back up and back into the play. Evan scored a number of times but he also carried the puck more than he ever has. He is showing more confidence in his play. Coulton Friesen played both defense and forward. He scored often and used his speed to make a lot of stops on the back-check. It was a great tournament for the team. Thank you to the organizers and volunteers for setting things up and keep-

ChildCan Tournament another success By Bryan Jessop

On the ice and in the lounge alike, another popular fundraiser in Wheatley has ended with several winners emerging — also both on and off the ice. The 26th annual ChildCan Tournament — an adult hockey event benefiting the childhood cancer support organization after which it is named — introduced a new format for 2020 that proved successful for players and fans alike. In the meantime, registration fees for each team and beverage sales from the bar where spectators gathered at Wheatley Area Arena’s second-floor lounge will allow for a donation of approximately $2,500 to ChildCan. As part of the 2020 fundraiser, representatives of Skate Wheatley sold paper hearts in the spectators’ lounge while round robin and championship games took place. In total, the local group raised “It was $980 as a portion of the donadefinitely another tion to be presented to Childsuccessful year.” Can. — Mark This year’s tournament Epplett squeezed a new division into the three-day schedule. Between the traditional Men’s Rec and Men’s Open groups, a Men’s Intermediate division was added while the Women’s group continued to operate in two pools of three teams each. After playing two round robin games each, the top two teams from each division went head to head for championship games on the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 16. Results were as follows: • Men’s Rec — Johnston Net and Twine 3, Dirty Dozen 1 • Men’s Intermediate — Vern’s 2, Windsor Wings 1 (SO) • Men’s Open — Quick’s 5, Custom Cut 4 (OT) • Women’s — Simp’s Skate Shop 4, Sticky Mitts 3 (OT) Tournament organizer Mark Epplett explained that the new format was well received and will likely continue onward into future editions of the yearly event. “Overall for the Men’s hockey, the realignment had really positive feedback from players and spectators,” he explained. “The results showed up on the scoreboard, especially with how even the finals were. We’re always looking to make improvements and do a little bit of tweaking, but we’ll definitely stick with this format for another year.” One option for future editions of the ChildCan Tournament could see an expansion of the three-day schedule. a handful of teams had to be turned down because of limitations with available ice times. Upstairs, the head count of spectators again proved a crucial source of support for the tournament.

“Our spectator area was at least as busy as always, if not slightly busier than in previous years,” explained Epplett, now in his fifth year of organizing the gathering. “It was definitely another successful year.”

Maroons’ point streak ends in Leamington By Bryan Jessop

While the Flyers don’t have a history of being fond the the LaSalle Vipers, they did their county rivals a favour as the regular season’s final weekend approached. Leamington officially foiled the Chatham Maroons’ bid to take fourth place from the Vipers in the Western Conference standings Thursday, Feb. 20 by defeating the M’s 8-3 at Highbury Canco Arena. The loss for Chatham halted its point streak at seven games while wrapping up the Flyers’ home ice record at 222-1-0. The Maroons held a slight shots on goal advantage through the first period, but the Flyers did all the damage on the scoreboard. Griffin Robinson started the scoring 13 seconds after the opening faceoff, firing a shot that banked off the end boards, deflected back towards the net and ricochetted off Chatham goalie Bryce Walcarius before bouncing over the goal line. Maddux Rychel and Cameron Blanton drew assists. The Maroons had the only two power plays of the opening 20 minutes — both Leamington bench minors for too many men on the ice — but it was the Flyers who continued to add to the scoresheet. On a shorthanded effort, Nicholas Beneteau raced into Chatham territory and slung a low wrist shot into the right corner of the goal. Rory DiNiro was credited with the only assist. As the clock ticked down to 29 seconds, Jacob Kalandyk set loose a shot that grazed the inner right post before deflecting into the mesh for a 3-0 Flyers lead going into the first intermission. DiNiro and Kade McKibbin assisted on the goal. The Maroons got one back less than 90 seconds into the second frame on a Zach Power shot that beat Matthew Waite. Leamington took over from there, backed by tallies from Zach Taylor, Robinson, Jaydon Fetter and Adam Jeffery. Robinson and Fetter scored

on the power play while Jeffery’s goal was the Flyers’ second short handed tally of the night, buried with 19 seconds left in the period. Assists on the four goals went to Rychel (2), Kobe Seguin, DiNiro, Thomas Michaud (2) and McKibbin (2). Beneteau buried his second of the night in the third, although Even Wells and Blake Boudreau replied for Chatham less than a minute apart from one another to finish the scoring. Leamington outshot the visitors 4132 and went two for three on the man advantage while the Maroons were held to zero for three. Fifteen points were collected by the eight of nine Flyers who suited up

for their final regular season home game of their junior hockey careers. “We were pretty opportunistic in that game,” explained Flyers head coach Cam Crowder. “I’m not sure it really should have been an 8-3 hockey game, but it was nice to see our 20-year-olds step up and score.” The regular season officially ended Saturday in Komoka with a 4-3 loss against the Kings. Leamington goals were scored by DiNiro, Robinson and Wyatt O’Neil. The Flyers’ Western quarterfinal playoff series

Atom Minor A ties it up in OMHA quarter-final

The Southpoint Point Pelee Karting Atom Minor A Capitals hit the ice at home Friday night, Feb. 21, facing off with Welland Tigers in their OMHA quarter-final series. After an overtime tie and an overtime loss the previous weekend, the Caps trailed the six-point series 3-1. Southpoint came out flying and five minutes in, Jonathan Recker rimmed the puck around the boards to Brayden Foster, who chipped it up to Ben Liebrock who slid the puck past an outstretched goalie to take the lead. Zack Bradley scooped up the puck behind the net and slid a pass back to Charlie Ketler at the point. Ketler fired his shot and Kayden Cook lifted it over the tender to increase the lead to two. In the middle frame, Brayden Foster grabbed a rebound and skated behind the net, scoring on a wraparound. Owen Derksen fed Cook the puck for a goal, and go up by four. Christian Papp stayed strong in net making two spectacular saves en route to earning the shutout. On Saturday the teams were back at it again. It wasn’t until 6:40 left in the second that Welland scored while on the power play. The Tigers increased their lead to two in the third, then Tyler Thomas grabbed the puck and broke past the D firing his shot on net. Zack Bradley corralled the rebound and slipped

it in to get within one. Any chances of a Southpoint comeback were snuffed out late as the Caps took a few penalties and Welland capitalized by scoring a pair for a 4-1 loss. On Sunday afternoon, the Caps came out a little flat and were scored on early on a questionable play with the net off. They kept working and were finally rewarded. While on the power play, Owen Derksen carried the puck into the offensive zone. AJ Youssef picked up the puck and fired it on net with the rebound coming out to Brayden Foster who rifled his shot in bar down to even the score. In the third, Jonathan Recker rifled a wrist shot glove side to go up by one. A minute later, Welland tied it up. With the Tigers only needing a tie to win the series, the hometown team started to pressure. Owen Derksen grabbed the puck inside his line, skated down the left wing and wired his shot in high glove to regain the lead. The Capitals were able to thwart any last minute comebacks and skated away with the 3-2 victory. Papp backstopped his squad to the series tying win by making numerous timely saves. With the six-point series now tied 5-5, Southpoint travels to Welland to see who will advance to the semi-finals.
