Cameras hope to deter criminal activity By Bryan Jessop

LEAMINGTON – The Leamington Uptown Business Improvement Association will soon be letting uptown troublemakers know that they’re being watched. In a non-unanimous deVIDEO cision, municipal council SURVEILLANCE voted in favour of having its Public Works department mount up to 10 signs that will notify pedestrians and motorists about surveillance camera services taking place along Leamington BIA-covered streets and walkways. Members of municipal council had mixed thoughts Uptown BIA merchants on the signs, ranging from care about the safety concern about adding to of our community the uptown area’s visual clutter to enthusiasm about discouraging would-be criminals from damaging or stealing property out of fear of being recorded in the act. Chief Administrative Officer Peter Neufeld noted, however, that actual video surveillance is being conducted by participating business and property owners in the Uptown BIA area, meaning that the members of the general public cannot rely on the municipality or BIA to display or provide footage from the videos. “I believe there are more effective ways to provide people with security than through video surveillance,” said Neufeld, who also noted that the Leamington BIA must work in collaboration with Public Works to ensure that the new signs do not visually obstruct existing signage in the area. Feedback from council on the report ranged from acceptance of the security cameras but reluctance to approve of relating signage to confidence in the cameras’/signs’ objective of discouraging criminal activity in the region. “I don’t see this as bringing us to a military state, like we’re being watched by big brother,” stated Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “I think we need to consider the big picture.” “We have some areas that are a challenge and businesses and police are saying the surveillance cameras are helpful,” added councillor Tim Wilkinson. “I’d like to see a day where we can take them down, but for now, I’d say they’re useful. A similar program has been a success in Detroit.” Wilkinson continued to explain that he doesn’t believe that the maximum of 10 signs will distract from the uptown area’s appearance. Councillor Paul Tiessen agreed that surveillance cameras are a necessity, but was skeptical about the need for signs to make the presence of such cameras known to the public. The proposal included in the report to council explained that the BIA wishes to have the maximum of 10 signs affixed to municipally-owned light standards and poles and that those signs be installed by Public Works. The projected cost for materials and labour time to erect each sign has been pegged at $100 for a sum of $1,000 in the event that the maximum number of 10 signs are displayed.

Backyard recreational fires now allowed with permit in Kingsville By Sheila McBrayne

Kingsville Fire Chief Chuck Parsons is busier than ever now that Kingsville Council passed a new fire bylaw on Monday, June 24. The revised bylaw allows for recreational backyard fires with a permit. (Southpoint Sun Photo)

KINGSVILLE – Until Monday night, June 24, recreational backyard fires were illegal in the Town of Kingsville. Since January of this year, administration received 50 inquiries for recreational fire permits. The previous bylaw or Fire Code did not permit a backyard fire. Last year, Kingsville Council asked its fire department and administration to come back with a report and recommendations, which were passed at Monday’s Council Meeting. The fire department conducted an online survey, which showed 86 per cent were in support of recreational fires. “It’s really just taking our fire bylaw up to match the rest of the county. Now every fire requires a permit with an inspection,” said Kingsville Fire Department Chief Chuck Parsons. Administration proposed an annual fee of $20 per residence for the permit, which would not be implemented until 2021, to provide the residents of Kingsville an opportunity to become familiarized with the process and to allow for the Fire Department to provide further public education forums. The new bylaw includes a provision for recreational fires under the campfire definition. On Wednesday, June 26, one day later, the department already had 45 calls to

apply for a recreational fire permit. Campfire is defined as a maximum 1 metre x 1 metre x 1 metre height, that is set and maintained solely

“It’s really just taking our fire bylaw up to match the rest of the county. Now every fire requires a permit with an inspection.” – Chief Chuck Parsons

for the purposes of cooking food, providing warmth or recreational enjoyment and adhere to strict regulations in regards to the size and location of the fire. The conditions that are defined provide for safe fires that would not be a nuisance to neighbouring residents. “You don’t have to pretend to be cooking; you’re allowed to just have a recreational fire (with a permit), but you do have to be mindful of your neighbours,” said Chief Parsons. “We can and will pull your permit if you do not follow the rules,” he added. The permits are enforceable by the OPP and Kingsville Fire Department. The new bylaw also allows the fire department to issue a fire ban in the case

of a severe drought. This would suspend all issued fire permits. To apply for a fire permit, an inspection will be conducted by fire department staff to ensure the area meets the guidelines and public education will be provided to ensure that conditions are followed before the permit is issued. Another change to the fire bylaw is the definition of an agricultural burn. The agricultural burn permit now lists all the prohibited items. “Last year dispatch had 45 calls and of those only four met the criteria of an agricultural burn,” explained Chief Parsons. Agricultural permits are divided into recurring fires (an annual permit) in one location or a one-time fire permit. “I think it’s a move in the right direction. Residents wanted to do the right thing and get a permit for their fires and now we can offer them that and be able to ensure safety mechanisms are in place,” said Chief Parsons. Parsons has been Chief of Kingsville Fire Department for two-and-a-half years and oversees two departments (Kingsville North and Kingsville South), which has 58 firefighters divided into four squads and four fulltime officers (chief, deputy-chief, fire prevention officer and training and public education officer) and a part time office administrator.

Area university students planning “Local Leaders” speakers summit By Ron Giofu

LEAMINGTON – A group of university students from the WindsorEssex County area are hoping to be inspired and to inspire others with their first “Local Leaders” summit. Leamington resident Kyle Cervini and Amherstburg resident Linden Crain are leading a team consisting of Marissa Ondejko, Jeron Kir, Brienne Mastronardi and Peyten Cervini, with all of them attending universities across Ontario. The event will take place July 11 at Pelee Island Winery with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and the event running from 5-8 p.m. Committed speakers

thus far include active volunteer Lisa Jeffery, Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald, Hogs for Hospice founder Joe Oswald, Downtown Windsor Business Accelerator CEO Arthur Barbut, WEtech Alliance president and CEO Yvonne Pilon, AlphaKOR Group president Frank Abbruzzese and Amherstburg Councillor Donald McArthur, who is also a former journalist and the current communications officer with the County of Essex. The concept behind the event, said Crain, is to bring in local leaders and feature their ideas, celebrate Windsor-Essex County and talk about what it takes to be a leader. Kyle Cervini said he founded the event so he could contribute to a better

community. “I was inspired to found it just to make a difference in our community,” he said. “We’ve been working on it for months.” Each speaker will have about 10-12 minutes with a question-and-answer period to follow. There will be a chance for ticket holders to network with the guest speakers as well, Crain added. There will also be complimentary snacks and drinks. Tickets are $10 each and available through their website at www.localleaderswe. com “We’re donating all the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex,” said Crain. Cervini said their original goal was to raise $2,500

and since they have already reached that goal, they now have readjusted their target and are now aiming to raise $10,000. “We want to, at a young age, start a foundation or charity, to give back to Windsor-Essex,” said Crain. “The area has given a lot to us.” “We started doing this because of our entrepreneurial and compassionate spirit,” added Cervini, who added they hope to diversify and do other events as well. Local Leaders WindsorEssex is active on social media. They can be found on Instagram at www.instagram.com/localleaderswe, on Facebook by searching @localleaders1, and on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ localleaders1

LEAMINGTON – From services offered from across the county to amenities located on site, change is in the ‘air’ for Leamington Fire Services. During its regular meeting Tuesday, June 25, municipal council approved a change in dispatch service providers for Leamington’s fire department as well as a new exhaust extraction system for the LFS building on Clark Street West. Leamington Fire Services chief Andrew Baird presented both reports to council, which carried both proposals unanimously. Dispatch services for the LFS has been awarded to the Corporation of the City of Windsor for the next three to four years at a cost of just under $69,000 per year for the first two years, $72,323 for the third year as per census projections and another $72,323 should the optional fourth year be selected. Since 2010, dispatch services to the Leamington department had been provided by the Town of LaSalle. During budget meetings, council learned that Leamington Fire Services would be issuing a request for proposal (RFP) for dispatch

services, as the contract with LaSalle had expired. Baird explained that after the RFP had been issued in early April, three bids were offered by four interested providers, none of them by the Town of LaSalle. Baird said the annual fees as presented by the City of Windsor represent a savings of about $74,000 per year. “With those kind of numbers, I’m definitely in favour of the recommendation,” noted Councillor John Hammond. Baird continued to explain that once the new dispatch provider begins offering its services, existing equipment being used — which will continue to be owned by the LFS — will be removed from the LaSalle location. The LFS chief also noted that the City of Windsor also provides fire dispatch services for Essex, Tecumseh and LaSalle — each of which have expressed satisfaction with the quality of the city’s work. Windsor’s fee for Years 3 and 4 if applicable may be altered depending on the specific results of Leamington’s census results for 2021. Immediately after the motion to hire Windsor for

Ready or not, here it comes Well, they say some like it hot, and I don’t want to be the one who brings it up after the weather we’ve had over the past couple of months, but the heat wave is upon us. Have you ever seen the rain so heavy and unrelenting as we’ve had in the past few weeks? RIB’S Our softball season has not been one of our best seasons in the sun. Someone, somewhere was doing a rain RAMBLINGS dance and left us wondering who’ll stop the rain. Mark Ribble Well, here comes summer. Maybe it’s something I said in the heat of the moment, or while I wasn’t thinking. In the summertime, we tend to accept the fluctuations in temperature. The heat of the night is not as bad as what they might experience during the day when it’s summer in the city. Summer nights tend to lead into a cool change as September approaches. If you’re stuck in the downtown during a hot, hot, hot spell, you can always escape by ‘goin’ up the country.’ The summer breeze in the country will give you welcome relief, whether you do it alone or with friends in low places. It’s not unusual to enjoy when the heat is on. You could be hot blooded and just want to soak up the sun. Before you go singing the summertime blues, be sure to sit back and enjoy the sunny afternoons of July and August. School’s out now and the kids are alright as they navigate through their summer vacation, not knowing if they’ll find summer love or if they’ll just say ‘see you in September.’ So hold on tight or hold on loosely, here comes the sun. Just try to say cool for the summer. Okay, there are 40 song titles in this article, most referring to summer heat or the weather. Some are just thrown in to complete a sentence. Good luck finding them and thanks for reading.

Pairing wine with cheese Let’s Wine Together By Carmen Danner

I’m always getting questions about how to pair wine with cheese, so here are some tips… Wine and cheese may be the original ultimate pairing and it’s also one of the easiest ways to find out which pairings work for you and which don’t. Remember that everyone’s palate and taste preferences are different, so it’s always good to have pen and paper at the ready to remember what worked best for you. Equal intensity (higher alcohol content with stronger cheese, lower alcohol content with more delicate cheese)… Try a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with a rich, aged cheddar or gouda or go for a softer Pinot Noir or Chardonnay with a mellow Gruyère. Pungent and sweet… Probably the most triedand-true pairing of them all, Gorgonzola and Port

(or ice wine). Why? Because the sweetness and funkyness go hand in hand and balance each other out for a truly mind-blowing flavour experience. Please don’t tell me you don’t like blue cheese until you’ve tried this combination. Ice wine or dessert wine is also a great pairing for a rich cheese fondue. Don’t care for wine? Try a hearty stout or porter with the blue cheese! Creamy and bubbly… Smooth, creamy, unctuous brie or camembert is perfect with sparkling wine because the acidity and bubbles in the wine help to wash down all of that mouth-coating creaminess so you’re ready for the next bite. Sparkling wine also works well with salty cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano. For a different combination, try Pinot Noir with the creamy cheeses… the Pinot won’t strip away all of that creaminess and the fruit and nut flavours are

great with the cheese. Do you like your Riesling dryer or sweeter? Try them both with Ricotta cheese and see which your palate prefers. A duo of tang… Fresh, ripe goat’s cheese with Sauvignon Blanc – or switch that up and go for a rosé instead. If you’re doing up a cheese platter for a group or party, be sure to label the cheeses so everyone knows what’s what. Have lots of plain, unflavoured crackers and baguette slices on hand as well as flavourful items to cleanse the palate like sliced dried meats and fruits like grapes and figs (or some home-made jams and jellies). Please help keep this column current and relevant. Let me know what you would like to hear about and submit your questions to me at csfdanner@gmail.com or on Twitter @gr8grapz.

LEAMINGTON – On Saturday, June 16, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Leamington Fire Services and Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a single vehicle collision at the intersection of Mersea Rd. 1 and Mersea Rd. 19 in Leamington. A vehicle left the roadway, rolled over and submerged in a water-filled ditch. There were four youth in the car, ranging in age from 13 to 17. One managed to get free of the vehicle but the others were trapped inside. Emergency services members freed the occupants and all were transported to the hospital with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening. Nicholas Wiebe, age 15 of Leamington, later died in hospital on June 16. Henry Reimer, age 13 of Wheatley, died in hospital two days later on June 18. The municipally organized Mill Street Markets is adapting to some unexpected growing pains. In response to the overwhelming success of the new gathering of vendors and patrons along the renovated section of Mill Street West, a report was submitted to council requesting a revised budget for the monthly event as well as an adjustment to the position of special events coordinator from part time to full time for the remainder of 2019. On top of the $54,000 already designated for the Mill Street Markets’ 2019 budget, an additional $18,000 was secured to address the unforeseen need for the rental of an electrical panel, extension cords, more tokens for alcohol sales and additional security and paid staff. The extra cost will be absorbed by funds generated through the rental of vendor spaces. Manager of Economic Development Tourism and Special Events James Cox explained the extra expenses are required to maintain functions at the Mill Street Markets in accordance with extra vendors and their customers. Originally, administration anticipated an average of 2,000 to 3,000 visitors who’d peruse about 20 vendors ranging from artisans to food and beverage providers. The inaugural version of the event on Friday, May 3 attracted about 4,000 guests despite poor weather conditions. The Friday, June 7 version wel-

comed 50 vendors and an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 patrons, prompting the request for an increased budget for the markets. “The response has been overwhelming,” Cox noted. “There have been issues with vendors selling out and getting more vendor applications that has us facing additional electricity costs.” The need for additional staff and security, Cox explained, will assure age of majority regulations are met with regards to the sale of alcohol. The special events coordinator — a position created in April of this year — was approved from 15 hours per week to full time until the end of December. The extra hours will come out to an additional expense of $8,300 for the 2019 budget and will provide another

520 hours to the position. Those hours will also be spent developing events such as Carousel of Nations, Ribfest, Hogs For Hospice and others. Members of council were not only receptive to the proposal of full time hours for the special events coordinator through the remainder of 2019, but questioned why full time hours couldn’t be extended beyond December 31. Chief Administrative Officer Peter Neufeld explained that senior administration has already been considering a permanent fulltime SEC, a matter that will be discussed further during next year’s budget deliberations. Neufeld also noted that a more permanent solution to the Mill Street Market area’s electricity needs are also a focal point.

COTTAM – The 2nd Cottam Scouting group celebrated its first year of scouting recently at Cottam United Church. Scouting had been dormant in Cottam for many years. This past year, Scouting was resurrected with the hard work and support of many Scouters and from the Cottam, Kingsville, Essex and Harrow communities – truly reflecting the “family” of Scouting. Opening a new Scouting group was a challenging endeavor that took many hours of planning from dedicated Scouters (previously called Leaders). With the experienced and skilled support from many Scouters in the Windsor-Essex area, 10 Beaver Youth and 11 Cub Youth began to share in new adventures together to better prepare themselves for success in the world. Approximately 80 people attended the formal scouting campfire, where the Beaver colony and Cub group performed opening ceremonies. The celebration included the investiture of Scouter Dan Ireland who transitioned

WHEATLEY – Summer arrived with lots of activity at Wheatley United Church. On Friday, June 21, the annual Strawberry Social brought many out to enjoy a cold plate supper with strawberries and ice-cream for dessert. The evening was a wonderful success. On Thursday, June 20, the Grade 8 graduating class of Wheatley Area Public School gathered in the church parlour for a celebration meal hosted by the Wheatley Lioness Club. All graduates are wished a bright future as they move on to secondary education. These are not the only graduates that are being celebrated here at Wheatley United Church. Congratulations also go out to John Cats and Ken Hatt, successful recipients of the Licensed Lay Worship Leader (LLWL) certification for the United Church of Canada. The congregants thank John and Ken for their hard work and dedication in this pursuit and wish them both much success. All are invited to join in the Community Worship Service hosted by the Wheatley Ministerial Association on July 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Two Creeks Conservation Area, 21638 1 Kent Road, just north of Wheatley. A potluck picnic lunch will follow. This promises to be an exciting time with the joining together in worship of the Wheatley Baptist Church, The Hope Centre, Wheatley United Church and its sister church to the west, Cottam United Church. Whether you call Wheatley and the surrounding area home or not, you are welcome to this worship opportunity. All are invited to bring a lawn chair and join in the service. This is an all-ages event and a great opportunity for the little ones to meet some of the folks who will be helping out at the Wheatley Ministerial first vacation Bible School, which begins July 8. All children ages 4-12 are invited to attend VBS “Ship Wrecked - Rescued by Jesus.” There will be learning actives, catchy songs, team building games and yummy treats. This event will be hosted at the Wheatley Baptist Church July 8-11 from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. Cost is $10 per child or $20 for a family. Register online at www.wheatleybaptist.church or call Wheatley United Church at 519-825-4157, The Hope Center at 226-9358128 or Wheatley Baptist Churchat 519-825-7433. Choir practice is at 9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings with Sarri or Sonia. The Keeping U N Stitches group meets July 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the sewing room.

Battle of the Growers a tasty fundraiser By Bryan Jessop

Brandon Zuech of The Grove Brew House hands a sample to a guest during the third annual Battle of the Growers Friday, June 21 at Pelee Island Winery in Kingsville. The event featured the works of six teams as a fundraiser for United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex County’s On Track To Success program, an initiative established to assist students at risk of not acquiring their high school diplomas. On Track To Success was launched in Leamington four years ago. (Southpoint Sun Photos)

KINGSVILLE – Hundreds of residents from across Essex County have proven their ‘good taste’ when it comes to charitable causes. The third yearly installment of the Battle of the Growers — the ultimate opportunity for local ‘foodies’ to support the United Way Centraide of Windsor-Essex County — met its expectations of raising $50,000 by selling out the roughly 275 tickets printed for the Friday, June 21 gathering. The fundraiser was hosted by Pelee Island Winery of Kingsville, which filled the second floor banquet hall with guests yearning for a taste of this year’s offerings by local growers, chefs and wineries. This year’s Battle of the Growers featured six teams created through random pre-event draws — one more than the 2018 gathering of five teams. Proceeds generated from the fundraiser will provide financial backing required for the local United Way’s On Track To Success program, which began four years ago in Leamington. On Track To Success was established to help guide local youths deemed at risk of not graduating from high school. Locally, participating schools include Leamington District Secondary School and Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School. Having just completed the program’s fourth year, United Way Centraide of WindsorEssex County is celebrating its first group of graduates, marking a 94 per cent success rate. “The principles have been super supportive and fantastic to work with,” explained United Way Centraide Windsor-Essex County CEO Lorraine Goddard, who recently provided a report on the progress of On Track To Success to Leamington municipal council. The 2019 Battle of the Growers generated teams of growers, wineries and chefs respectively of Highline Mushrooms, Pelee Island Winery and Twigg’s Bar and Grill; Allegro Acres, Colio Estate Wines and Rob Nesbitt of The Salty Dog; J.C. Fresh, Oxley Estate Winery and Wolfhead Distillery; Lakeside Produce, Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards and The Vines Restaurant; Red Sun Farms, CREW (Colchester Ridge Estate Winery) and The Grove Brew House; Nature Fresh, Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery and Dean Litster of Armando’s. Assisting with each team are students involved with On Track To Success. “Each year it gets bigger and better,” Goddard explained. “It’s supporting an important cause for our community in Leamington and Kingsville.” The six teams that prepared dishes for guests were drawn about five weeks prior to this year’s event. The groups vied for two awards — one selected by a panel of secret judges and the other a “People’s Choice” Award determined by ballots filled by each participating guest. The Competition Champions as picked by the judges were the team of Red Sun Farms, executive sous chef Brandon Zuech of The Grove Brew House and Colchester Ridge Estate Winery. The team’s winning appetizer was Porky’s Pepper Popper. The People’s Choice winner was the team of JC Fresh, Wolfhead Distillery and Oxley Estate Winery. Their appetizer was a Cajun Chicken Ratatouille Tart. This year’s fundraiser was organized by a committee of 12 individuals from across Essex County, led by United Way Centraide of Windsor-Essex County donor relations manager Danielle Moldovan. “Everyone gets very excited about it,” Moldovan said of the competition. “There are a lot of repeat customers who look forward to a unique spin on a traditional gala.”

E.S. seniors league enjoys great golf day The Erie Shores senior golf league finally had a great weather week and enjoyed its best golf day of the year with 62 seniors challenging the course. The 50/50 draw winners were Larry Lucier and Ed Krahn. Closest to the pin on #3 was Rick Metz and on #16 Gary Alderson. The longest putt was made by Wray Pollock on #7 and Jerry Malott on #17. In a game of straight golf less handicap, the winning team with a score of 282 was Gary Alderson, Neil Reimer and Garth Dennerley. In second place at 284 were Bob Kavanaugh, Ian McIver, Alden Warner and Matt Dick. Third place at 290 went to Jerry Malott, Don Mensch, Wayne Wiseman and Norm Beattie. In fourth place with a score of 292 were Paul Pringle, Russell Alliet, Earl Dunmore and Jamie Arquette. Matt Dick with a great round of 75 led four golfers who broke 80. The others were Wray Pollock’s 76, Neil Reimer’s 78 and Wayne Wiseman’s 79. Matt Dick also led all golfers with four birds on #1, #4, #6 and #7. Two others had a pair of birds each: Wray Pollock on #5 and #12, and Gary McRae on #2 and #15. Barry Miller, Neil Reimer and Wayne Wiseman birdied the first hole. Carl Young, Keith Brown, Ed Krahn and Jerry Malott birdied #2. Rick Metz birdied #3, Dick Segedin #4, Russell Alliett #7, Ron Tremblay #8, Richard Leslie #9, Jerry Meloche and Jim Bleasby #11, Earl Dunmore #12, Roger Hodgson #13 and Ken Luxford #16. Congratulations to all the winners and bird shooters. Great golfing. Members: Don’t forget to sign up for next week if you have not yet done so.

Windy day tests TT senior golfers By Bob McLean

On a windy, sunny June 25, there were 68 Talbot Trail senior golfers who played their weekly league game. Members were allowed to use the scatter rule for carts and are even starting to get some roll on their shots. Derek and the outside workers did a tremendous job keeping the course playable during the extreme wet conditions this spring. Kevin Jordan hit an outstanding shot to within six feet of the pin on #9 to win the closest to the pin. Jerry Paine drained a beauty on #2 to win the long putt! With Dutchy away, many

golfers tried to win the top spot for the lowest score. However, the wind seemed to cause the scores to soar for many. This wasn’t the case for smooth swinging Vic Reynaert and rapidly improving Doug Langlois, as they both fired excellent 40s. Long hitter Mike Wright placed second with his terrific 42. Others who scored commendable 45s or less were Joe Drummond, Jamie Arquette, Bob McLean, Shannon Wiper, Tim Stevenson, Pat Hill, Larry Schmidt, Steve Longeway, Paul Harrison, Paul Brown, Bill Ward and Kevin Jordan. Despite the windy condi-

241 Pizza

Leamington is home to many pizza places, but 241 Pizza in uptown Leamington offers “taste and quality without breaking your wallet,” according to owner Mike Vernaroli. Vernaroli moved the buisness to 61 Talbot Street East in 2013 and spent three months on a major renovation. 241 Pizza has been open for five years and has attracted some loyal customers. “We like to see our repeat customers. We try to get to know them a bit and make it more personal,” said Vernaroli. The pizza shop employs 9 full and part time employees. 241 Pizza opens each day at 11 a.m. with their lunch special – two slices and a can of pop for $5. The pizza shop has pizza and wing combination deals as well as bread sticks. Pizzas come in a vast array of flavours these days, but 241 Pizza believes that classics are classics for a reason. We prepare six varieties of traditional pizza: Deluxe (pepperoni, mushroom, green pepper, and red onions); Canadian (pepperoni, bacon, mushrooms, and a three-cheese blend); Meat Lovers (pepperoni, bacon, Italian sausage, and beef); Veggie (green olives, red onions, mushrooms, tomato, and green peppers); BBQ Chicken (grilled chicken strips, red onions, BBQ sauce and extra cheese); and Hawaiian (ham, pineapple, bacon, and extra cheese). When the classic flavours just won’t do,

tions, there were some outstanding scores shot by the 80+ grouping. The following are some of the very commendable results earned by the players: Bob Freure 47, Joe Vrtel 48, Neil Adamson 49, Tom Hyatt, a nifty 50, Ed Woelk 53. The super seniors also merited very gratifying results. Dave la Bonte scored an excellent 45 to lead the way. Other very commendable results were: Murray Cascadden 51, Gerry Becigneul 52, Erle Nash 56. Ninety-one year old Orville Ellwood, who still walks the course, came in with a dandy 58.

Sharks sign goalie Jackson Ford of the Kingsville District High School Cavaliers’ boys hockey team makes a firstperiod glove save during a WECSSAA Tier I boys hockey game against the L’Essor Aigles at Atlas Tube Centre in Lakeshore Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018. On Saturday, June 22, Ford became the latest player to sign a card with the Wheatley Omstead Sharks for the 2019-’20 season. In addition to playing for the KDHS team for 2018-’19, Ford also tended net for the 2017-’18 Erie North Shore minor midget Storm, which captured that season’s Ontario Minor Hockey Association championship. He played for the 2018-’19 major midget Storm while serving as an affiliate player (AP) for the Sharks. In an early season game against the Lakeshore Canadiens, Ford stepped in as backup goalie to make 25 saves on 25 shots. (Southpoint Sun file photo)

Thanks go to Arkey and Joe Drummond for their superb barbecuing of the sausages and hamburgers. Special thanks are extended to Dave Dent for assisting again this week. You were a big help, Dave! Steve Longeway, as always, did his long putt and closed to the pin job to perfection.

And, as always, buddy Wiz was there to keep things interesting at the table. The league welcomed back Mike Getty and Don Willan. Caleb and Kiera kept the hungry, thirsty crew very satisfied. Members miss having their good friend, Bummy, at the table, but he is expected to return very soon.

A travel excursion to Deer Run is planned for Friday, July19. Three senior golfers were walking on the last hole (sounds familiar). First guy says, “Windy isn’t it?” Second one says, “No, it’s Thursday!” Third one says, “So am I. Let’s go for a beer.”

We like to see our repeat customers. We try to get to know them a bit and make it more personal. you can always turn to Specialty Pizzas menu, which combines traditional toppings with more experimental tastes. Check out the wide variety of pizzas at 241pizza.com The pizza place is open until 10 p.m. Monday to Wednesday; Thursday to 12 a.m.; Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m.: and until 12 on Sundays. Being located in uptown Leamington, 241 serves a large cross section of the public. “Food is universal and we offer a nice middle ground,” Vernaroli said. “Pizza lovers have a certain loyalty towards their favourite pizza place,” he added. “We’re here because of our customers. You can have the best product, but if you don’t have the customer, it doesn’t matter. We want to make the customer feel a little bit better about their day,” said Vernaroli.

SWOC Kids Fishing Derby is this Saturday WHEATLEY – The annual Southwest Out-

SPARC Field Day Kingsville Fire Department fire chief Chuck Parsons (left, VA3LFC), Doug Reynolds (VE3DFR) and Edwin Piers (VE3EKA) conduct Morse Code operations using the Kingsville Fire Department’s Safety/Command Trailer during Emergency Communications Field Day Saturday, June 22 at Sun Parlour Homes in Leamington. About 50 visitors, including SPH residents, stopped by for a closer look at amateur radio operators in action as the group set out to see how many communication connections it could make June 22 and 23. Using generators during the exercise, participating Field Day operators working from two trailers parked in front of the SPH building accumulated a score of 732 with single points established for voice contact and double points for each Morse Code connection. Each year, Field Days are used to test equipment that would be used in emergency situations where more commonplace forms of communication are rendered inoperable by natural disasters including tornadoes, hurricanes or excessive flooding. The radio room set up at Sun Parlour Homes by SPARC serves as the back up location for the County of Essex while a location at the municipal building on Erie Street North is Leamington’s main emergency communications station and another at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex sits ready to serve as the municipality’s back up. Among the weekend’s 732 contacts were points from as far south as Florida and as far west as Hawaii. (Submitted photos)

doors Club (SWOC) Kids Fishing Derby is this Saturday, July 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wheatley Harbour. There will be trophies for the biggest fish and prizes for every child, as well as a raffle with eight bikes to be won. SWOC provides all the bait, and rods will be available if needed. Kids will also be treated to a free hotdog lunch, and pop and water will be provided.

Essex Power Corporation made a donation of $40,000 in support of youth programs in four communities, including Leamington. From left to right are: Ray Tracey (President & CEO, Essex Power), Marc Bondy (Mayor of LaSalle), Hilda MacDonald (Mayor of Leamington), Leo Meloche (Deputy-Mayor of Amherstburg), Gary McNamara (Mayor of Tecumseh) and Joe Barile (General Manager, Essex Powerlines). Youth programs benefit from $40,000 donation ESSEX COUNTY – Essex Power Corporation announced its sixth consecutive donation of $40,000 through its Youth in Community Fund during their Annual General Meeting June 26. This year’s contribution will again be evenly distributed amongst its shareholders – the Municipality of Leamington, Town of Amherstburg, Town of LaSalle and Town of Tecumseh – and will be used to advance local, youth-related investment. To date, Essex Power has funded a total of $240,000 youth driven initiatives in the communities it serves. The fund continues to provide support for new and ongoing initiatives in each of the four communities. Youth initiatives include recreational swimming series, pancake breakfasts with Santa, recreational skating series, skateboarding competitions, Earth Day celebrations, children’s summer concert series, Canada Day celebrations, Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee, and mentorship programs such as the Essex Empowerment Girls Group to name a few. “Connecting to our communities has been a priority of Essex Power since inception. We strongly believe in investing in our local youth and providing them with opportunities and programs surrounding education, fitness, and social responsibility,” said Ray Tracey, President & CEO, Essex Power. “Our shareholders do a wonderful job of distributing the funding amongst a variety of activities, making the programs more affordable for the children and youth of our community.” The Youth in Community Fund is just one of the many ways Essex Power gives back to its communities, helping to solidify their commitment of being a good corporate citizen and being socially responsible.

SCRAMBLE ANSWER

Wow! Another day without rain graced the Erie Shores Proggers on June 25. The scores are getting better, with the ball rolling out instead of plugging. Everyone had to play the front nine twice, since the greens on the back nine were being aerated. The group of Orest Hrynewich, Roger Cote and Brian Plumb played quite well. Orest always remind us to watch for his ball. It really was unnecessary. Orest had his swing grooved for the middle of the fairway. Roger celebrated his 70th birthday. Now that he has a driver that behaves, his game has dramatically improved. His pitch and chip shots were accurate. When he missed a putt, he called it a dirty sock. I can think of other phrases. One of the Proggers in the league likes his beer. I imagine his swing is fluid because there is so much fluid in his body. He has become close friends with a few trees when necessary (like a lot). As he loaded up his cooler bag, I took Ward Hutchins’ idea of keeping track… 100 bottles of beer in a cart, then 99 bottles of beer on a cart and so on. The round only took five hours so I stopped at 75 bottles. Just kidding. $10 winning team: Pete Andary, Norm Beattie, Fred Klassen, Claudio Sabelli, Ken Cobby, Bill Conn, Ken Luxford, Bill Gherasim ,Roger Cote, Carl Grossi, Greg Dunmore, Kevin Bunda, Gene Bouliane, Larry Roberts and Bill Stackpoole. 1st High Plus: +10 Ken Cobby ($20), 2nd High Plus: +9 Richard Reive ($15), 3rd High Plus: +7 Ollie Mastronardi ($10). Skins $31 each: Dick Segedin #2, Brian Plumb #4, Ron Koop #5, Pete Andary #6 (eagle - net albatross). The snake remains with Gene Bouliane for another week. The snake is starting to feel at home on Gene’s golf bag. Next week is the week for it to move. Right Gene?

Dragula 2.0 at Kingsville District High School car show May 17.

Awesome dragster built by high school students It’s long, low and fast. It’s Dragula 2.0, a Munster-inspired dragster designed and built by students at Kingsville District High School under the watchful eye of their auto shop teacher, Gord Osborne, who was born in 1963 at a time when drag strips were practically everywhere and quarter-mile fever was at its height. Osborne has had many years of experience with race cars, both working on them and behind the wheel. He served for many years as the crew chief in the CASCAR Super Series, Bill Sherk and in his garage today is a 1969 Z28 Camaro race car. The idea for Dragula 2.0 began in September 2017 and construction stretched across three school semesters. The auto shop students eagerly embraced the idea as sketches on the blackboard were followed by 3D computer images showing what the finished product could look like. The entire dragster was built in the KDHS auto shop except for the front axle from a 1951 Ford F100 frame and the rear end from a 1975 Jeep Cherokee. Local businesses contributed time and materials as the project took shape. Two Grade 10 girls in the auto shop class built the motor based on a Chev 350 V8. Over 80 students took part to make it all happen. In March 2019, it was finished in time to be an entry in the Detroit Autorama, one of America’s biggest and longest running hot rod and custom car shows. It was placed in the middle of the ground floor and created a sensation, winning two first place awards; one for the High School Category and one for the Special Interest Motorized Category. The KDHS students and their teacher were thrilled. After Autorama, Dragula 2.0 was on display at the Canadian Transportation Museum at Heritage Village and at the London Fairgrounds, where Osborne drove it across the parking lot and into the Convention Centre. The auto shop students are now rebuilding a Hemi engine taken from an old Plymouth. And there is talk of building a vehicle for the stock car circuit. But for now, Dragula 2.0 thrills everyone who sees it – and when Osborne revs up the engine, the skull in the middle of the hood opens its mouth! I’m always looking for stories. Terry Shanks It is with the utmost pride and admiration that we announce Terry Archibald Shanks is now at peace after his strong and courageous nine-year fight with an unrelenting disease. At the age of 64, Terry completed his journey in his home and in his favourite chair, surrounded by his family. Terry’s wife Madeline Shanks was his greatest support, strength and love throughout a wonderful life and a blissful 32-year marriage. She will carry him with her in her heart. He is survived by his pride and joys Jessica Puchnatyj (Stefan), Chris Shanks, Margaret Shanks, Marlene Shanks, and his ultimate joy, grandson Logan Puchnatyj. Terry will be lovingly missed by ALL including his mother Elaine Shanks and his siblings Al Shanks (Mavis), Brent Shanks, Don Shanks (Mary Jo), Deb Shanks (Derek White), Scott Shanks (Michele), Ann Fife (Bill), Dave Dodman (Lynda), Carman (Vickie), Billy Dodman (Stella), Mike Dodman (Denise), Peter Dodman (Miriam), Beth Pollock (Dan), and Karen McCarter (Ted). He also always held a special place in the heart of his Auntie Jane. He will be greatly missed by his many aunts, uncles and cousins. He adored his 75 nieces and nephews and 63 great-nieces and greatnephews. He is predeceased by his father Bob Shanks, brother Ronald Shanks, fathers-in-laws John Dodman and Howard Steinburg, brother-in-law Bobby Dodman, Uncle Bill Shanks (Audrey), and great-nephew Journey Stickney. Terry resided in the former Romney Township all his life and served on Romney Council. He built many of the breakwalls, jetties and retaining walls that protect the shoreline and will for many years to come. Terry was a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. If you needed something mended, designed or created, he was your goto guy. He enjoyed his regular tour of the neighbourhood visiting family and friends, with special daily stops at Manufarm and his mother’s house. Terry could often be found at Talbot Street United Church singing in the choir, helping with pie-making, cooking and serving for church suppers, playing Santa, or just entertaining the crowd with his stories. He was adored by Cheryl Jarecsni and all his ladies at the Chatham Chemo Suite, the team at Elston’s Pharmacy, his nurse Lisa DeBeck, and his NPs Rita Dibiase and Jon Ann Meko. It was entirely mutual. With their stellar care and that of Dr. Michael Sanatani and his nurse Julie, Dr. Robert Mayo and Dr. David Sullivan, Terry not only surpassed even the most guarded expectations but never let his diagnosis determine his attitude and outlook. Words cannot express how this great loss will impact our family and community. Terry will be forever missed, and forever remembered. Visitation will take place place at Terry Shanks’ residence in his new shop on Wednesday, July 3 from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 11 a.m. at 3564 Talbot Trail, Wheatley. Online condolences are welcome at www.lifetransitions.ca

Friendship Club selects Senior of the Year By Bonnie Dawson

WHEATLEY – The Wheatley & District Friendship Club meeting of June 19 began with Doreen Armstrong on piano and Lena Janik leading the members in singing O Canada, followed by the blessing. It was Pat Churchill’s birthday and everyone sang Happy Birthday to her. Jean Brodie and yours truly were on lunch at this meeting and we want to thank those who stepped in to help by cutting the cake and dishing out the ice cream, as well as showing yours truly how the dish washer works. A beautifully decorated cake was supplied by the club for the Senior of the Year. Pat Churchill introduced the club’s Senior of the Year for 2019. The honour went to a well-deserved recipient – Alma Edsall – who has been a very active Friendship Club member since 1986. Alma, who has been on the executive for many years and has served a few terms as president, also used to run cribbage and is currently involved with bridge. She is involved with the Senior Games as well. When the club had a choir, she was choir director and at the present time she books the entertainment that comes to the club once a month. Alma was given a tiara by Linda Wigfield and presented with a plaque and lovely bouquet of flowers by President Harold Dundas. Congratulations, Alma! The 50/50 draws were won by Doreen Armstrong and Robert Lapsa. Bingo was the entertainment for the afternoon. Thanks to Heather McKee for calling the numbers and to Linda Wigfield and Alma Edsall for checking the numbers and handing out the prizes. The winners were Barb Siddall, Jean Brodie, Bob McKee, Ted Cobby, Nancy Roach, Carol Roach, Harold Dundas, Robert Lapsa, Tammy Krawchuk and Lena Janik. The next meeting is Wednesday July 3 at 12:30 p.m. It will be the club’s summer picnic with potluck and broasted chicken. Please sign up so organizers know how much chicken to order. The price will be $3. Members may bring a friend (non-member) for free. Members are to bring a dish or two. Help will be needed to set up. The entertainment will be Bob and Bonnie Dawson. Years ago, the club held the picnic outdoors, but after they had to go back to the club because of rain, the picnic has been held inside ever since. I think members like it that way as there’s no uneven terrain, no bugs and there is air-conditioning if it’s hot. On Monday, July 8, there will be collections at 8:30 a.m. On Wednesday, July 10, there is an executive meeting at 8:30 a.m. Please be sure to nominate a member for the Director’s position. On Wednesday, July 18 at 1:30, the meeting will feature donuts and Bingo. There is a sign-up sheet available for members to take their turn on lunch. Remember, until a maintenance person comes forward, all members are asked to contact members of the board if something needs to be repaired. The meeting closed with the benediction. Until next time…
