honoring freedom and pride:
The NC 4th of July Festival provides residents and visitors over 30 opportunities to celebrate American spirit
W
HEN THE UNITED STATES adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, commemorating freedom from Great Britain, it marked the country’s own federal holiday that would be celebrated each year with traditions unique to American citizens. Over the years, these traditions have evolved to mean parades, American flags, cookouts with hot dogs and hamburgers, baseball games and always a firework show finale—and there are few that put on a better celebration than the city of Southport, NC. Officially adopted as the NC 4th of July festival in 1972, the people of Southport really have been celebrating Independence Day for over 200 years. In colonial times, ships would lay anchored in the harbor and shoot off cannons to observe the United States’ day of freedom. Now, the festival attracts between 40,000 to 50,000 visitors to the small maritime community. Southport and the festival committee make sure the celebration has something to offer for all demographics. From the opening ceremony on June 28, shag and skate contests, flag retirements, new citizens, arts, crafts and food to the annually anticipated fireworks finale July 4th evening, Southport promises to continue their Independence Day celebration in a big way. All of these activities and more are covered by Southport Magazine, and to make it easier for readers to plan their weekend, below is a list of compiled events and activities with all of the information needed to make a successful festival. For more details on all of these events, or to register for events such as the Freedom Run or the Shag Contest, visit www.nc4thofjuly.com SATURDAY, JUNE 28 Opening Ceremony 7:45 a.m. • Waterfront Park, 101 E. Nash St. This competition has invited area fire departments to participate with the Southport Fire Department since 1984. The event pays homage to training and firefighting methods and it tests the teamwork of a department. The competition will include events such as the Barrel Push, Bucket Brigade, Command Post, Sprinkler Plug and Tanker Tug. There will also be fire engines, ladder trucks and equipment on display for the audience. SUNDAY, JUNE 29 Reading of the Declaration of Independence 4:45 p.m. • Fort Johnston Garrison Lawn 203 E. OR INDEPENDENCE DAY IN the United States, there are things Americans are sure to see and do to commemorate the national holiday. There will be fireworks, cookouts, outdoor games and activities, the American flag and patriotic songs. However, for dozens of families attending the US Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Ceremony in Southport on July 3rd, the meaning of Fourth of July goes beyond hotdogs and hamburgers. There are 120 candidates expected to take the Oath of Citizenship at this year’s ceremony that is held annually on Fort Johnston Garrison’s Lawn, overlooking the beautiful Southport waterfront. Part of Southport’s famous NC Fourth of July festival since 1996, the ceremony serves as a reminder to everyone participating in the event of the true meaning of the freedom and independence the holiday observes. For the Americans-to-be it marks the end of a long and tedious journey towards citizenship that requires an abundance of patience, hard work and perseverance. Last year the ceremony garnered over 100 new citizens representing 48 countries and seven regions from around the world, the most claiming Mexico as their home country. This year’s ceremony will follow a similar structure to the event in years past— something that is important to Ted and

Fran Carlsen, co-chairs of the ceremony. “We try to keep it as traditional as possible because the focus is of the swearing in and the naturalization papers to the new citizens,” Ted informs. He and his wife, Fran, have been co-chairing the ceremony since 2004, and according to Fran it is a responsibility the couple took on unwittingly at first. New to the area and wanting to get involved, Fran agreed to help the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organize that year’s naturalization ceremony. At the next meeting the DAR surprised Fran by introducing her as the previous chair’s replacement. Fran says her husband “graciously” consented to help her with the event, and they

have been working together on the annual project ever since. While the Carlsens believe it is important to keep the same traditions in each year’s ceremony, the event does not fail to give them a sense of fulfillment each time a group of new citizens takes the oath. “It gives me a lot of pleasure to watch when they become citizens,” Fran describes. “Some of them can hardly wait until they get that piece of paper that says they are a citizen.” Directly after the ceremony the new citizens have a chance to gather in the Southport Community Building for a reception hosted by the DAR. The Brunswick County Board of Elections also will be there for the new citizens to begin voter registration. The ability to vote and have an active voice in local and national elections is something new citizens look forward to most. Several Southport organizations get involved with the ceremony, taking pride in the tradition by offering their services to the celebration. The Brunswick Concert Band precedes the ceremony with musical entertainment at 3 p.m., while the Southport community choir will sing two patriotic songs upon the official start at 4 p.m. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard will be on-hand to display the colors of the United States and North Carolina. Dolly Witt, Retired US Air Force, was chosen by Fran herself to sing the national anthem. After hearing her sing in Wilmington months ago, Fran approached Dolly and implored she perform the national anthem at the naturalization ceremony. The ceremony will end with cannons administered by the 13th Battalion NC Artillery Reenactment Group. The USCIS Naturalization Ceremony is free for all to attend. The Brunswick Concert Band will showcase America’s music this summer Story by Mary Helen Turek What: Brunswick Concert Band Summer Concert Series When: Various dates and times Where: Various locations Cost: Free Info: www.brunswickbands.org

HEN MOST FOLKS think of our nation’s birthdate, the Fourth of July, visions of fireworks, parades, great barbecue, and John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever” played by a tuneful martial band come to mind. The 50-member strong Brunswick Concert Band will provide “Stars” and a lot more during a series of concerts in and about Brunswick County. This year’s Summer Concert Series director is Tom Smicklas. Tom’s first experience playing Sousa was using original music manuscripts that the composer, through his associate Victor Grabel, gave to his high school in Cicero, Illinois, in the early 1930s. Tom recalls that he cut his teeth on artful and traditional band literature playing with park concert bands in and around Chicago. And we know that thousands of other cities and towns throughout the land featured similar band events—and do so to this day. “I am proud that we are now providing this Americana music for the residents of Brunswick County at a series of venues, without charge and in its purest form,” Tom shares. “The program selected and being admirably performed is second to none in the area.” The 2014 concert is entitled “A New York City Central Park Goldman Band Concert.” The Goldman Band has performed annually in Central Park and around the city since 1911. The Brunswick Concert Band’s program features such band classics as the 1904 arrangement of the Fillmore Band’s “Light Cavalry Overture”; Sousa’s 1893 march “High School Cadets”;
regional

“Santa Anna’s Retreat from Buena Vista” from the Stephen Foster’s 1848 Missippi Steam Boat revue; the 1938 National Band Contest “Allan-A-Dale Overture”; Sousa Band’s original 1917 version of the national anthem, all four verses being sung by band member, Brunswick educator and historian Dick Slease; and Karl King’s 1916 Barnum and Bailey Circus strut “The Walking Frog.” Also on the play list are Fred Jewell’s 1916 patriotic march “E Pluribus Unum,” and a special treat, Ben Edwards—Brunswick Concert Band member and Brunswick County educator—will perform the tour de force, “Beautiful Colorado,” exactly as written and arranged for the Sousa Band’s world tour in 1903 by Sousa’s solo euphonium player, the Italian virtuoso Giuseppe De Luca. The Brunswick Concert Band also will perform traditional Independence
Day music such as “Yankee Doodle,” “You’re A Grand Old Flag,” “This Land is Your Land,” “God Bless The U.S.A.,” “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” and a special medley including selections from all of the United States Military Services’ anthems. “We feel strongly that bringing America’s music to all points of Brunswick County’s compass is in line with the historic intent of music performances for Independence Day,” Tom divulges. “We also know our responsibility as stewards of unquestionably the one most important music ensemble of traditional Independence Day activities, the community band, to be true to our heritage and historically accurate—and to elevate our audience in the spirit of what is best about America, and we will deliver.” The Concert Band will be taking their program directly to all areas of Brunswick County. The Concert Dates and times are as follows: Winding River, Bolivia: Friday, June 27th at 6:30 p.m. outdoors near the clubhouse. Follow the signs. Private to Winding River residents only. Magnolia Greens, 1800 Linkwood Circle, Leland: Sunday, June 29th at 4 p.m. outdoors near the clubhouse. Follow the signs. Open to the public. “M
USIC HAS THE POWER to uplift one’s spirits, to stir one’s emotions, to cause the heart to sing or to cry. Choral patriotic music has that power,” Cindy Sellers, director of the Sea Notes Choral Society, enthusiastically states. “The Sea Notes is a choral group of 100-plus volunteer music lovers that enjoy singing and sharing their passion with the community.” This group of musicians presents free concerts three times per year: spring, Independence Day, and Christmas. The upcoming performances on June 28th and 29th present their patriotic concert, “Those Who Serve,” honoring and commemorating over 200 years of America’s heroes and their bravery. “Those Who Serve” could hit close to home for many, such as the director herself. Cindy’s husband, Donald, was an Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam. She also followed Donald while he was in flight school and accompanied the base chorus in Fort Wolters, Texas, and Hunter Air Field in Savannah, Georgia. Others in Cindy’s family who served in America’s armed forces were her father, father-in-law, and an uncle. While attending High Point College and minoring in music, Cindy accepted her first church choir director position. Cindy brings an eclectic and spontaneous approach to her directing position, along with the help of her accompanist, Jane Boberg. Cindy was appointed director of the Sea Notes by the founder, “Miss Connie” Ledgett,

after the Fourth of July in 1974. Cindy is currently music director and organist at the Village Chapel of Bald Head Island and has been for 15 years. The Sea Notes will take its audience on a musical journey through our nation’s military history, while touching on several milestones that relate to 2014. “Interestingly, this year will commemorate the 200th birthday of our national anthem, so we chose a new, special arrangement to open our program,” Cindy explains. “Then we move through the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, the centennial of the start of WWI, the 70th anniversary of D-Day, and the 50th since the start of the Vietnam War.” Patriotism. What exactly is it? Cindy describes it perfectly. “I’m descended from men who fought for our Independence and women who supported that fight. I am proud of their courage and conviction. Patriotism for me is the pride in and respect for that heritage and the hope for the perpetuation of our liberty to our posterity.” Patriotism will be amplified on June 28th and 29th as the Sea Notes powerfully move and entertain through patriotic memories, voices and music. Attend either show, both held at the Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia, for free. For more information, visit www.sea-notes.com.
