T MAY NOT SEEM LIKE IT NOW, BUT THE CLOSE OF THE SCHOOLYEAR will soon be here. High-school seniors are making plans to pursue college degrees, donning the gear of their soon-to-be home team. Juniors, meanwhile, are priming themselves to become to the sharks of the school (or the top cougars, as the case may be).

With this in mind, Southport Magazine's owner, Kris Beasley, came up with a plan to help two students from South Brunswick High School cover some college expenses while allowing them to feature published works on their résumés and in their portfolios.

Through a scholarship entry, one student with an interest in journalism and one with an interest in photography will be featured in our June edition, following the prompt, "What I love about Southport."

"Last year I sat in the bleachers at South Brunswick High School with my husband, Alan, and watched our daughter, Brooke, receive four scholarship awards.

This was one of the best days of my life," Kris shared with me. "To see all of Brooke’s hard work pay off was awesome! Sitting there, I thought to myself that if I ever became a business owner, I would create a scholarship for SBHS students. I am so proud and excited to offer two scholarship awards through Southport Magazine. The money that Brooke received help us fund some of the grand expense of college. I look forward to helping two students and their families with their college expenses."

OR THE FOURTH YEAR IN a row, the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce will host its popular Coastal Consumer Showcase: a display of our local array of businesses, from dentists to florists.

Each attending shop, restaurant, or service provider will be on-hand to chat with guests about their specialties. The showcase—while great for longtime locals to discover new businesses and the new merchandise offered by old purveyors—is particularly beneficial to new residents.

"The Coastal Consumer Showcase is designed to give our residents a sampling of all the goods and services available in our area," Karen Sphar, executive vicepresident of the chamber, tells. "There will be plenty of samples and giveaways from the area merchants along with information about their businesses. As in the past, there will be a Chinese Auction: Each vendor will have a prize at their booth. Just for attending and registering, residents get one free raffle ticket."

Guests can place their ticket in the receptacle of whichever prize they choose, ensuring winners receive something they truly want.

In 2013, there was a 35 percent increase in attendees from the year before, according to Sphar. "We contribute increase in attendance to a response from residents who have been before, talking about what a great time it is and how much they found out about the offerings from our local business community," the vice-president adds.

"This is one of the few chamber events that are open to all businesses."

Color Me Carolina, a home décor and gift store in Oak Island, attended last year's showcase. It was the shop's second time participating. "As a fairly new busi-

ness (three years this May), it was imperative for us to showcase our store, including our screen printing and embroidery business," owner Melaney Robbins explains. "Although we advertise regularly in the area newspapers and guides, some locals still did not know who we were or where we were located. Last year's turn out was spectacular. We met new people, networked with others, and got feedback on our products. Although Southport and Oak Island rely on the tourism traffic in the summer, the locals are the true heroes who support our business, and that is who we focus on the most."

Of course, with the growth of the showcase's attendance, the chamber felt it was important to expand the event's grasp.

"New this year are the free seminars and the interactive fashion show," Sphar details. "During the expo, there will be models walking the floor. The models will have a sign which will designate where the items they are wearing can be purchased locally. We encourage attendees of the showcase to stop and talk with the models. The seminars include free fitness assessments, free shag dance lessons, and a free fishing seminar."

Guests of the 2014 seminar can expect to encounter a full show. Shops include Color Me Carolina, Renee's Fine Jewelry, Steeped Tea, and CP Gunworks. Food and bever-

age-related booths will feature Southport Tea Room, CrazyCakeChicks, Hog Heaven Barbecue and Ribs, Silver Coast Winery, Fuzzy Peach, and Mr. P's Bistro.

Consumers will be able to chat about improving their home with businesses like Coastal Shutters, Cape Fear Shutters and Blinds, Island Spas, D.L. Bianchi's Brickyard Supply, Inc., Al Fulford HVAC, and Piedmont Natural Gas. Finance and insurance vendors will attend, such as Ken White of Farm Bureau Insurance, Edward Jones, Josh London of State Farm, Coastline Insurance, First Community Bank, and Alliance Credit Union.

Health-related vendors will run the gamut, including Family Chiropractic Plus, Massage Therapeutics by Joanne Duncan, Carillon Assisted Living, Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center, Coastal Companion Care, Dosher Memorial Hospital, Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry, Ocean Trail Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, and local gym Cape Fear Fitness.

Other attendees include Coastal Computers, Greenwood Pet Camp, ATMC, and Brunswick Community College. Of course, local media such as Southport Magazine, The State Port Pilot, and South Brunswick Magazine will be at the showcase, too.

HERE ARE FACETS OF U.S. history that often fall by the wayside. With more than 20 decades passing just since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, teachers must breeze through the larger points with new students each year. North Carolina historian LeRae Sikes Umfleet takes a different approach.

"We know the broad scope: the war stories, battles, regiments, units," Umfleet described during an interview with Southport Magazine. "It’s the smaller stories—the people who took care of the wounded or who took care of things at home—that give a more complete picture to the broad scope."

One group of people Umfleet takes interest in are the "Hello Girls" of World War I. Answering General John J. Pershing's emergency appeal for bilingual telephone-switchboard operators, women—many previously employed by telephone companies—were sworn into the United States Army. Of the women enlisted, over 300 served overseas as French-speaking operators. Their duties included connecting soldiers on the front lines to the General command for the first time in the history of war.

As part of the NC Maritime Museum at Southport's Third Tuesday Evening Adult Program series, Umfleet will present a lecture on the American Hello Girls on March 18th at 7 p.m. in the Southport Community Building.

Umfleet is the Supervisor of Education and Outreach for the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.

Her love of history was influenced early as she grew up in one of North Carolina’s most historical towns: Bath. Oral history maintains that the infamous Blackbeard married one of her ancestor’s sisters, but it is yet to be proved.

I asked Umfleet if she would look into the rumor, she shook her head "no" and laughed. “Pirates didn’t keep good records,” she mused.

In eighth grade she vigorously studied Greece and Rome to discover the mystery of Atlantis. To Umfleet, the first Indiana Jones movie was awe-inspiring, opening the doors to the world of Egyptology.

Umfleet received her undergraduate degree in History from UNC Chapel Hill and earned her master’s degree at ECU. In 2009 the historian published a book, "1898: A Day of Blood in Wilm-

ington," about the race riots in New Hanover County's port city.

Her enthusiasm is evident; to conduct this interview, she took time out from participating in the Civil War Reenactment of the 149th Anniversary of the events of Fort Anderson at Brunswick Town.

Her vast wealth of names, dates and facts that span generations is impressive. At times during our chat discussing World War 1, she would pause, gather her thoughts, laugh and apologize. She'd amend that the 1860s were on her mind and indeed, understandably, as she was in character. Umfleet was dressed in Civil War-period garb, a plaid wool day dress she had sewn herself, while sounds of canon fire from the live reenactment boomed in the background.

In “Hello Girls! Women and World War I,” Umfleet will discuss the women behind the scenes of World War 1, including the Hello Girls—not to be confused with Rosie the Riveter—that was WWII. At the time, WWI was the biggest and essentially the first international war, The Great War, and ultimately the precursor to World War II. The presentation will also be a conversation, Umfleet assures. She invites the public to share family experiences or stories, a letter, a patch—any kind of record. Discovering and maintaining history is fact-finding; “the more information, the more developed the history," she urges.

N THE FIRST FRIDAY OF every month, a handful of Southport's art galleries open their doors after hours for a public Gallery Walk. As a self-guided tour, participants can peruse the varied works of several local and regional artists, from painting and photography to ceramics and wood carvings, among many other mediums. During the First Friday Southport Gallery Walk, many venues offer hors d'oeuvres and beverages as part of the welcoming atmosphere.

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 7th, folks can join in this month's gallery walk, including Art at 211 The Ricky Evans Gallery (211 N. Howe Street), Lantana's Gallery and Fine Gifts (113 S. Howe Street), Silver Coast Winery Tasting Room (105 S. Howe Street), and Howe Outrageous Art Gallery and Marketplace (307 N. Howe Street).

At Franklin Square Gallery (130 E. West Street), guests will be able to enjoy the opening reception of the annual Spring Art Show.

Each entrant submitted one or two works, either two-dimensional or three-dimensional, on February 28th. Every work, from either members of the Associated Artists of Southport or regional artists, was accepted and will be for sale during the display, which ends March 22nd. Paintings and other twodimensional pieces will be judged for prizes

by Kate Worm, an artist who works in watercolor/gouache and oils on canvas.

"She will be giving an oil painting workshop [March 3rd through 5th]," Dot Moore, this year's Spring Art Show chair, explains.

"Many layers of oil paint will be applied, and sometimes some will be removed, to unveil dark/light patterns. Her work is luscious because of the different techniques she uses."

Worm's art is on display in five North Carolina galleries as well as many major public collections, including Hickory Museum of Art, Bank of America in Charlotte, City of

Winston-Salem, RJR/Nabisco, and Sara Lee. Worm has been the Art Consultant for the Enola Group Service for Developmentally Disabled Adult Artists for 15 years and has been the High School/Adult Educator at the Hickory Museum of Art in North Carolina since 2003.

Three-dimensional works, limited to sculptures and pottery, will be juried by Denise Bramley, who served as the pottery instructor for the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department from 2003 to 2007. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics and art education from East Carolina University, Bramley worked at Ben Owen Pottery, a regionally renowned studio in Seagrove, NC. "Denise Bramley gives many pottery workshops and lessons in Wilmington, and continues to make her signature totems and

colorful, functional wares," Moore adds.

In both categories, first-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded on the night of the opening reception. Merit and honorable mention awards will be given at the judges' discretions, as well.

Of course, what would a reception be without refreshments? "We always have wine and a variety of delicious finger foods and sweets—something for everyone's taste," Moore assures.

Franklin Square Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Greenlands Farm Store purveys much more than free-range eggs and local honey

W

HILE DRIVING TO GREENlands Farm Store from Southport or Oak Island is more of a trek than just stopping by Lowe's Foods, what folks will discover between the pines on Midway Road is a haven for local, organic groceries. From honey made by the farm's own bees to soap made from the farm's goats' milk, the trip is worth the eight- to 12-mile ride.

Greenlands Farm is owned by Heather and Henry Burkert, who got their start in landscape architecture and civil engineering with a focus on environmentally responsible design. The duo earned degrees in landscape horticulture from Michigan State University before eventually acquiring property in Bolivia, NC. "They didn't start out farming—they started out gardening for themselves," Brittany Taggart, an employee of the farm, explains.

"And then it slowly expanded. They had milking goats when they were younger, so they got some goats. Then the herd got a little bit bigger and they started using the milk for soap.

So it's just been a slow progression into actual farming for a living."

Taggart's focus has been in the NC food scene for quite a while; she previously worked with Feast Down East, a non-profit striving to build a strong local food system by connecting farmers to the market. With a love for sustainability in farming, she took an interest in Greenlands Farm and joined the team after fulfilling an internship with the farm. Today, she runs Greenlands' education programs while working a bit in the store and coordinating events.

"Greenlands has been in operation for about three years now," Taggart continues.

"A lot of their landscape-design background shows on their property because they've integrated all sorts of plants that you wouldn't normally see on a farm. They grow tea, for example, but if you looked at their backyard you would think they're just bushes because they line the entire perimeter of the backyard—but they're actually plants you can harvest tea from."

Everything grown on Greenlands Farm is organic. It is the foundation, while "from the field to the fork" is the mantra. The store houses a café where fresh sandwiches, homemade ice cream and smoothies, and vegan and gluten-free desserts are the norm. Even the salad dressings are made by hand.

"Heather does all the jams, pickles, jellies—that's all from the farm and done by hand in small batches," Taggart reveals.

"We didn't have cabbage this year—we planted it but the worms got it because of all the rain—but we got organic cabbage from another farmer and Heather makes homemade sauerkraut. She bakes all of the bread [with organic flour]. So everything is really, really fresh and homemade. It takes a lot of time but it's worth the effort."

From Greenlands' hens come free-range, pastured, hormone- and antibiotic-free eggs.

Likewise, fresh fruits and veggies line the shelves of store refrigerators, resting beside local milk. North Carolina-raised meats are for sale, too.

"We do carry milk in the store from a dairy farmer in Duplin County," Taggart confirms.

"We have a relationship with them; they bring down milk and cream so we can make our own ice cream. The beef and chicken comes from Mebane, NC. Farmers can't do everything, so what they do is work with people who are farming in a similar style; they're all either organic—or like the dairy farm is hormone-free and antibiotic-free. So that's in line with the same healthy effort that we're going toward."

cake, carrot cake, German chocolate cake—as well as unique items such as Caribbean fudge pie and Scottish shortbread. Of course, the desserts are made by Mrs. Burkert in small batches, so the selection varies daily.

Rosemary from Greenlands Farm goes right into Taggart's favorite treat. "Heather makes a lemon-rosemary polenta cake and it's really unique," she begins. "Polenta is generally thought of as a cornbread type of thing; it winds up actually being not savory but more sweet. I really enjoy that a lot."

Taggart says many customers love Mrs. Burkert's liverwurst. "For a lot of the food in the store, she uses family recipes," the employee tells. "So the liverwurst is her motherin-law's recipe. She carries on a lot of traditions that way."

Another family tradition is the love of tea, rooted in Mrs. Burkert's Scottish heritage. A high tea is scheduled for the fourth Friday of every month; details are available on the farm's website, www.GreenlandsFarmStore. info. Of course, the farm can accommodate groups of 10 to 15 for private tea parties.

Classes are also a popular event for the farm.

"Heather has done a tea class in the past

where you help harvest tea and learn about how it's processed," Taggart shares. "Generally the classes are about healthy cooking, healthy eating, and baking for your needs— such as gluten-free baking. All the classes revolve around fresh food and the farm."

Actual vegetable production at Greenlands takes place on five acres. But a slew of animals call it home.

"They have a bunch of rescue animals, from organizations all across the state," Taggart reveals. "Some of them are local, such as the equine rescue and the llama rescue. They have two llamas, two Shetland ponies, one miniature Shetland pony, a couple pot-bellied pigs, and a miniature donkey who came from a local farm that donated her. Horses and equine work on a pecking order [like a hierarchy], and she was the bottom of the pecking order, so she got picked on constantly.

But she came to us and she's my favorite; her name's Miley."

Families can meet Miley and the rest of the animals on Saturdays, weather permitting. "Educators are there to talk about each animal and bring them to the front so you actually get to pet them," Taggart says. "You get to see them up close and learn about them, so it's a pretty cool experience. We try to keep it affordable, so it's $4 per kid and $2 per adult. On Saturdays we also do pony rides with one of the rescue ponies named Dudley (cover photo). He came to us about 150 pounds underweight, and now he's a healthy young man."

The rescued llamas even offer cart rides during special events, such as the spring and fall festivals Greenlands hosts. Folks can keep up with all the farm's events online, particularly the upcoming kids' summer camp.

throughout the summer. It's a homesteading camp, so we're teaching them the basics of what the farm is like, from helping maintain the animals to egg collection, to actually seeing how they bake the bread and they'll make their own lunch," Taggart offers. "They'll help pick vegetables. We're not going to teach them how to be farmers but we'll teach them life skills and they'll also learn about food, its importance, and what it takes to grow food, so they can get an appreciation for that."

Starting in May, customers can take part in Greenlands' CSA (community-supported

agriculture) program. For 10 weeks, participants will receive a half-bushel of the farm's organic fruits and veggies, from arugula to watermelon, every Wednesday. Complete details are available online, and registration is now open.

HE IRISH CELEBRATION OF St. Patrick began centuries ago as a feast in honor of the saint who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isle.

It's no wonder today the holiday is celebrated with copious fanfare; St. Patrick's Day falls within the confines of Lent and therefore serves as a reprieve from penitent self-denial of vices. Many Irish men would down a couple pints of Guinness in the name of St. Patrick each March 17th, and folks around the world have adopted this tradition as a result of immigration and the mixing of cultures.

ROSSFIT HAS ARRIVED IN Southport! Started in 2000 by founder Greg Glassman, the fitness exercise program has been adding affiliated gyms across the USA for over a decade—finally reaching our immediate area as of this month. Based on strength training and conditioning, the goal of this program is to build muscle strength, increase heart and lung endurance, and improve flexibility in a group exercise environment. There are currently two CrossFit-affiliated gyms in our nook of Brunswick County.

In South Harbor off Long Beach Road, John Surigao has started CrossFit Safe Haven, a stand-alone CrossFit facility.

A former UNC football player and West Brunswick High School football coach, Surigao has participated in the CrossFit program for more than four years and has been a certified CrossFit coach for over one year.

The Staff of CrossFit Safe Haven include certified male and female coaches. Basing his work outs on "functional movements performed every day in an energetic and communal" environment, Surigao is committed to CrossFit's individualized and personalized training with every exercise session.

Currently, the program is in the "On Ramp" phase where participants are taught the basic movements and exercises under the guidance of the coaches. Participant Nirali Patel shared her enthusiasm for the program. "It is a lot different than just going to the gym," she describes. "I love the team workout and coaching."

In fact, during the brief time I observed the participants in action, the coach provided encouragement as well as constructive feedback to allow each participant to get maximum benefit from their movements.

Surigao has a goal to support youth athletics in Brunswick County with profits of this gym. He verbalized there are "no contracts and no egos," emphasizing his goal to provide an exercise program that people want to attend. He believes strongly in the need to practice preventative health measures and will be incorporating a CrossFit Kids program as well. In addition, he has plans to bring Custom Fit Meals (prepared meals specializing in CrossFit's dietary suggestions) and a nutritionist on board to assist participants in meeting their goals for a healthy lifestyle. In addition, Cape Fear Fitness is implementing a CrossFit program as a part of

their services. Located at 5130 SouthportSupply Road, Cape Fear Fitness gym has been an established business since 2008 but added CrossFit in February as a new program available to their members. For an additional charge, members can join the CrossFit program while still accessing the weight and cardio equipment as well as the variety of classes offered at the gym, such as TRX, yoga and spinning. Program leader Samantha Stephens brings energy and personal experience to this program, which is also staffed with male and female CrossFitcertified instructors.

As the trend has swept the USA, Stephens developed a love for CrossFit because of the motivation it provides. Not only did the program supply Stephens with immediate results, she experienced a "shift in [work out] focus to become better at something" while progressing in the program which led her to pursue certification. She encourages participants to take part in a work out environment where "friends make it fun, and great relationships are formed."

Classes began February 24th, 2014, but Stephens notes participants can start at any time. She invites anyone who is interested to call and speak with her or stop by the gym, as she is there almost every day. HEN PREPARING FOR a move, you may be hiring movers, packing, and transferring your homeowners or renters insurance to your new address. But what about getting moving insurance?

If you’re like most people, you may not realize that your homeowners or renters insurance won’t cover loss or damage to your possessions while in transit.

Since moving puts your stuff at risk for all kinds of unforeseeable mishaps, having moving insurance can give you peace of mind should anything go awry. Here’s what you need to know to make sure you’re protected for your next move.

Does my homeowners policy cover a move? Although it’s not standard, some homeowners policies will cover your property during a move. Review your policy or talk with your agent to see if your property is insured while in transit or storage.

Where do I get moving insurance? Moving companies offer various insurance options, two of which are mandated by federal law: 1. Released value coverage (or basic carrier liability). As the most basic coverage required by federal law, this liability coverage is free and based on weight, paying up to 60 cents per pound for an item. But if your $500 one-pound tablet gets damaged during a move, well, it hardly comes close to paying the full replacement value.

2. Full value protection (or full replacement value protection). Also required by federal law, this coverage has to be purchased, but experts recommend it, because it pays for either the current market replacement value of an item, replacement with a similar item, or the item’s repair. If you opt for full value protection, make sure to get details of your moving company’s specific plan to see how it determines replacement value, especially for items of extraordinary value, and to learn what actions might limit

your mover’s liability.

3. Separate liability insurance. Some movers might offer this optional insurance for purchase. Governed by state law, separate liability insurance pays for the insurance amount purchased minus the basic carrier liability amount that the mover pays (up to 60 cents per pound).

If you go this route, make sure you get a copy of your policy and understand the amount of insurance you purchased and the cost for this coverage.

What if I do the move myself?

Most likely, your homeowners or auto insurance policy won’t cover your possessions if you transport it in your personal vehicle or in a rental vehicle. If that’s the case, then you assume the risk if you use your own vehicle for the move. Truck rental companies, on the other hand, offer insurance that not only protects the rental vehicle, but also the driver, passengers, and your cargo, depending on the type of coverage you choose.

What do I need to file a claim? To file a claim of loss or damage, you may need to prove that the lost or damaged item was actually moved by the movers and not damaged beforehand. A comprehensive moving inventory list—which should include items of extraordinary value like jewelry, silverware, and digital devices—can help support your claim, so make sure it is complete before the movers transport your property. It’s also wise to take before and after pictures and file your claim promptly to facilitate reimbursement.

Any way you look at it, moving insurance can provide some protection and peace of mind during an extremely stressful time.

OU MAY HAVE NOTICED the wood carvings hanging from live-oak limbs outside The Painted Mermaid in Southport, or perhaps you took note of the woodworker in a bright orange knit cap. But have you ever ventured inside the shop that houses resident artist Dave DeGroat (the guy in the orange hat)? What you will find is something dynamic, as items change every day. Opened in April 2010 and featuring everything from home décor to jewelry, The Painted Mermaid is a treasure chest waiting to be opened.

Southport Magazine (SM): Why did you want to own your own shop?

Amy Atwell (AA): I had been in "big box" retail since I was 16, and it seemed that as time had passed, the companies I worked for had gotten further and further away from the things I felt most important. I had always wanted the opportunity to keep things simple and be able to focus on and enjoy the best parts of retail, which for me were the customers, the buying, and the display.

SM: Tell us about your consignment program.

AA: We do take consignments by appointment on a 50/50 basis. We accept a little bit of everything and are most drawn to items that are different and, at times, even a tad quirky.

SM: Why is it important to you to feature local art and jewelry in your store?

AA: I love featuring local art and handmade jewelry for many reasons. First, it's guaranteed to be different, one of a kind, unique. And secondly, I'm not the only one who wanted a chance to do the thing I love "my way," so why not surround myself and support others who have been inspired to do the same thing! And, you know, that's not

ing and building an ongoing inventory, he does work on commission, designing pieces to suit each client's needs.

SM: What decorating styles can customers find in The Painted Mermaid?

AA: We offer a mix of absolutely anything and everything we think may appeal to our shoppers—new, old and everything in between! And because we take consignments, it changes virtually every day. We keep a wish list, which helps us when we're out scouting, and we pass the information to our consignors that actually shop for the store on a regular basis.

SM: How did Dave DeGroat become The Painted Mermaid's resident artist? Can you tell us a bit about his wood carvings?

AA: Dave DeGroat had recently relocated to Jacksonville and was exploring the area for shops to show his wares.

We had just put up our sign—three days prior I believe—when he stopped and said to the friend who was helping me at the time, "I carve mermaids; would you like to see them?"

Thankfully she was sharp enough to recognize a great opportunity when it fell in our laps, and Dave became not only our first artist, but our resident artist.

All of Dave's pieces are carved from Atlantic White Cedar and can be used indoors or out. (The largest piece currently on display actually started life as a telegraph pole from the early 1800's!)

He is truly amazing to watch, with so much of the work being done with hammer and chisel. In addition to design-

A cute cottage woos passersby in Southport

HERE IS A HOUSE IN DOWNTOWN Southport that I have long admired. A dainty, light blue cottage—like the color of the sky seen through a blanket of cirrus cloud—peeks from behind a white picket fence and the twiggy branches of a live oak tree. Details rooted in historical architecture, such as a metal roof and a transom window, still exude contemporary appeal. Every time I pass this small abode, I linger, pondering my daily life if I were the owner.

The cottage in question is 110 W. St. George St., which was constructed in 1905. It was the end of a boom of buildings put up surrounding the turn of the century, accommodating new residents when Southport was a city

humming with economic ventures. The home underwent a complete renovation in 2005 by former Southport developer Phil Arroyas, once associated with the Cottages of Price's Creek neighborhood.

Arroyas restored the original pine floors, and current owners Bill and Donna Stokes enjoy custom shutters outside and, indoors, a fireplace insert with gas logs, among other enhancements.

Though the Stokes reside in Greensboro, NC, yearround, they long have been drawn to Southport. "We had been coming to Southport for 20 years or so," Donna recalls. "We would go and vacation on Ocean Isle, and we started when our daughter, Lynn Marie, was six months

old. Bill said to me, 'There's a little town I want to show you, with some shopping areas.' So we started coming that first year, and for 19 years after that, we came just to walk around and shop. We would spend the day up here and have lunch—a hot dog, normally. There was 22 of us vacationing in this big house on Ocean Isle, so coming to Southport was a way for us to get away for just a few hours. I always loved this town—I just loved it."

About five years ago, the Stokes began searching for a coastal house with serious intent. "We looked everywhere, all the way down to Savannah, GA, and up to Beaufort, NC," Bill confirms. "We looked at a lot of places and really liked this one the best—and still do. It's a

"We liked the colors, which is one reason we bought the house," Bill contends.

"The [last owners] were kind enough to leave some paint samples here, and buckets with the names of the colors, for us to work with. So we chose the same colors and just touched up the paint. That's really about all we've done to the house, as far as the structure itself."

The Stokes were searching specifically for a cottage to call their own. "A lot of the homes we went in were just gorgeous, but they were too big for our need," Donna shares. "When we walked in this one, it was everything—that cottage look—that

That's what brought us to Southport."

Open shelving allows the opportunity to showcase an eccentric collection of coffee mugs or decorative plates and glassware.

A petite window over the sink caps off the quaint kitchen.

A small dining nook fills with the brightness of two skylights and three windows.

In the Stokes' rendition, two green wooden chairs mismatch with two elegant cushioned seats for romantic, quirky design.

"When we first came, of course, it just screamed 'cottage,'" Donna says of the wall colors. "We don't have it really decorated, maybe, as much as we would have if we were here full time. But we wanted to make it comfortable for when we were down here and when we had family down.

But I don't have a favorite room—I think they're all my favorite."

Little by little, the Stokes expanded on the bare necessities: a bed, some dishes, some seating. However, the house truly

came just the way they wanted it. "The upstairs bath is wonderful. It has a chandelier over the claw-foot tub, perfect for relaxing—and both the chandelier and the tub were already here," Donna muses. "Like I said, when we walked in, there were just so many features, it was like, 'This is it!' It was already ready for us. It was empty otherwise, so we did all the furnishings. But there's a lot of sweetness to this house. I don't know if you can really describe it any other way."

Upstairs, two bedrooms share a full bath. Like the rest of the house, the rooms receive adequate sunshine, complementing the bright décor.

The master bedroom is on the first floor, and it has the ability to shut off the master bathroom and a small hall and large closet from the rest of the house, creating an en suite. Though some of the floors are painted navy blue or eggplant, the pine wood shines to its century-old glory in the master bedroom.

master bath "It's a small home, but the storage is wonderful," Donna says of the closets throughout the abode. "There is no wasted space in this house. I can say that."

While the Stokes didn't have much to change about the inside, they did spruce up the sidewalk area out front. "All the smaller trees from the oak to the next lot we put out," Bill notes of the crepe myrtles and redbuds. "It looks nice in the springtime when all the blooms are out. Really, it's pretty."

A vacant lot between the Stokes' home and the next cottage, a charming brightpink abode, even receives a bit of TLC. As the Stokes venture to Southport each week during the summer to care for their property, they also maintain the abandoned lot. The couple put out a bench, even, to create a park atmosphere.

Side Street Bakery—where the Stokes always stop to pick up an apple-cinnamon fritter or one of the cakes—is in a prime spot for downtown Southport. "It's not a bad location at all. Who wouldn't want waterfront? But it's in walking distance of everything," Donna says.

Indeed, the house essentially is part of the Water Tower District, which features restaurants like Mr. P's Bistro and Baked with Love, along with shops like Four Legs Good and Boo & Roo's. The waterfront is just a few more steps away.

"We enjoy biking and walking; it's just a great town to do all that stuff in," Bill shares. "When we're here, we go on a morning stroll and take our dog along."

The couple also enjoys the landscaped back yard and deck. A large storage shed that matches the home houses gardening tools, but it could even be made into a private garden oasis.

Though the Stokes deeply considered keeping the Southport home and relocating full-time, they have (reluctantly) decided to sell. With large property in Greensboro that they are very attached to, if they moved to Southport, they would continue making the four-hour drive to care for their land, albeit in the opposite direction.

The program is for adults only (ages 16 and up) and is limited to 40 participants. It is not appropriate for those who have difficulty climbing narrow ladders or over knee-high hatches. Adventure Kayak Company, 807 Howe St., Southport www.ncmaritimemuseums.com The NC Maritime Museum at Southport has partnered with the Adventure Kayak Company to offer Historical Southport Bicycle Tours.The guided tour will wind through live oak canopied streets and along the waterfront, incorporating local history. Participants will pedal past Fort Johnston, homes of Pilots and Blockade Runners, the Brunswick Inn, and the Old Yacht Basin, where several movies have been filmed.The tour is $25 per person, which includes use of bike and helmet. Bring your own bicycle and helmet and join the fun for $20.

The show features a talented cast of youths performing a variety of song and dance numbers sure to delight audiences of all ages.
