At a glance with the CEO
In this edition we are proud to share the new Southport Sharks re-brand, which launched in November. You can read all about the evolution of our club's brand and meet the designer behind the new logo on page 6. We are also excited to unveil our new website, which was completely redesigned to focus on striking creative and easy-to-access information for our members and guests. The final element of this re-brand included a refresh of our team members uniforms - you will no doubt have noticed the new, smart look on our team members in Gaming, Bars, Carmody's and Frenzy's. We would like to thank and congratulate the following outstanding team members on reaching their 20 year anniversaries at the club in 2017: Tracey McMurtie (Promotions), Iris Harkiss (Guest Services), Kerry Smout (Bars) and Sharda Jablanski (Frenzy’s). It is a fantastic achievement and we thank you for all your hard work over the years. Construction of the Mantra at Sharks hotel is progressing well, with the scaffolding coming down and the facade taking shape. We are on track to open early next year prior to the 2018 Commonwealth Games - view our latest architectural renders opposite. We are pleased to announce the appointment of our 2018 Football Coaching Team - Steve Daniel (Senior Coach), Matthew Lappin (Assistant Coach), Aaron Cornelius (Assistant Coach), Fraser Thurlow (Strength Coach) and Matthew Palmer (Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach). They have a wealth of experience and knowledge between them and we are excited to see what they can achieve for the Sharks next year. It is a significant time for the Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct and the city as a whole, in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. With the Athlete’s Village and the Gold Coast Hockey Centre on our doorstep, it will be a sensational time for the club and we hope you will enjoy the atmosphere and celebrations this brings. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2018. Dean Bowtell Chief Executive Officer

INTRODUCING THE NEW
Southport Sharks Vision & Values
In a city so new, Southport Sharks is over 50 years old. From humble beginnings at Owen Park in 1961, to becoming a community leader in sport, leisure and entertainment services - we’re proud of our history at Sharks. We serve over a million customers annually and enjoy entertaining our 55,000 members each year. Development of the Mantra at Sharks hotel will continue to propel the club onto a national stage.
Perform at our Best Work as a Team Honesty & Trust
With the anticipation of the new hotel approaching, it was clear the Southport Sharks brand needed to reflect its new positioning within the marketplace – we needed a fresh look that recognises our football heritage, represents our club values and communicates our reputation of quality, both on and off the field. “The club is growing,” explains CEO, Dean Bowtell, “and with the introduction of the hotel, our brand will be exposed to new customers and organisations. The brief to our designer Matt Vergotis, was to deliver a contemporary representation that recognises our heritage, values, and reputation within the community. The brand needed to be flexible to meet the club’s diverse attributes in delivering sport, leisure and entertainment services.”
Be Local, Responsible & Sustainable Provide Positive Experiences Deliver Results Southport Sharks' vision is to be the Gold Coast community’s leading sport, leisure and entertainment provider.
Meet the Designer Matt Vergotis, Creative Director of VERG and self-confessed “surf nerd”, was born and bred on the Gold Coast. He has a simple philosophy in life - to do the things you love. He injects this belief into every project he takes on. Matt surfs every morning before the sun even breaches the horizon, which is where his inspiration for the new Sharks logo was found. He further explains "My goal was to design a logo to reflect the athleticism of an AFL athlete. Plus, the flexibility of the brand was very important, part of the brief was ensuring the brand could be implemented from football guernseys to corporate stationary”. “I had to design a real athletic, energetic shark, almost mirroring an AFL player - that has that momentum,” Matt explains, “getting that aesthetic was super important.”

rofessionalism that are positively rt Sharks brand and culture.
Southport Sharks CEO, Dean Bowtell.
In preparation for the introduction of the Mantra at Sharks hotel, the new Southport Sharks brand was launched in November. The Shark itself, has been redesigned to have an energetic and dynamic nature, representing an on-field AFL player in action. Circular forms were used as a grid to create a balanced and harmonious curvature to the sharks form - much the same way there are patterns and geometry found in nature. The SS Monogram was constructed to give an extra asset to the brand. It introduces a quality and heritage value to the brand that was missing previously. It can be used both within the master brand and as a stand-alone device, aligning itself with other areas of the corporate sector of the club The ‘V’ anchors the shield and draws reference to the traditional V stripe of the Southport Sharks AFL jersey.
Evolution of the Southport Sharks brand:
Originally known as the Southport Magpies, our first logo back in 1961 was a hand-drawn shield by one of the club’s supporters. The club won our first premiership in the inaugural year of the Gold Coast Australian Football League.
The next, more refined magpie logo, was launched in 1977 when Bobby Webb oversaw the building of new change rooms at Owen Park with $120,000 worth of donated labour. The new social club consisted of just a kitchen, bar and dance floor.
In 1983, with a string of premiership success, the Magpies entered the QAFL. However, another QAFL side held the same name so a simple coin flip loss, resulted in the name change to Southport Sharks and a new logo was born.
In 1999, the club's fierce nature on the field sparked the need for a logo that reflected this aggressive and competitive spirit. It also coincided with the year Nick Riewoldt joined the Southport Sharks. The club underwent major renovations a few years later, with it injecting $700,000 into football activities.
Sharks reaffirmed its commitment to promote AFL on the Gold Coast in 2008, through a 12 year Patron Partnership agreement with the Gold Coast SUNS. This prompted a new brand identity to be designed, reflecting the significance of the partnership, which broadcasts Sharks on a national scale.
Community HERE FOR THE
Southport Sharks Community Study and Development Program Southport Sharks partners with local universities to provide work-integrated learning programs, as a part of our commitment to the wider community. The programs provide valuable learning opportunities to advance the notion of work ‘readiness' and go far beyond activities restricted to the classroom. Sharks is proud of our long-term partnership with Griffith University. The university has provided pathways into the Southport Sharks for many team members. In August, Kayla Malss a fourth-year student at Griffith University, was provided the opportunity to work in the Marketing Department as part of the Griffith Business School's Internship Program. HR Manager, Ann-Maree O'Neill explains how “Kayla produced her own marketing campaign for one of the outlets. This was a fitting project for Kayla as she has been working as a barista at Sharks, while studying for last 2½ years.”
Kayla gained practical experience to complement her current studies, giving her insights into the various outlets within the club, and the marketing tools utilised to communicate with members and the community.
"My 10-week internship at Southport Sharks gave me valuable experience I simply couldn’t gain anywhere else. I was lucky to have the support of a very strong and helpful marketing team, who taught me a vast range of skills - from office etiquette to software applications.” – Kayla. Marketing Manager, Andrew Zurcas was impressed with Kayla’s work ethic and willingness to learn, as a result Kayla has been offered a position within the marketing department. Below: Griffith University Intern Kayla Mylass with Marketing Manager, Andrew Zurcas and HR Manager, Ann-Maree ONeill
Griffith University Undergraduate Work Placement Southport Sharks is committed to providing students with the opportunity to participate in a program that will assist in preparing them for future roles in the hospitality industry. The diversity of our business allows the students to gain practical on-the-job experience in reception, gaming, bars and fine dining. This year, Barry Fraser, the Lecturer and Work Integrated Learning Convenor at Griffith University’s Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management, worked with Sharks to coordinate three students to undertake 75 hours of work placement. “This is the second year we have worked with Southport Sharks, and at Griffith University we are most appreciative of the club's support.
This program provides the students with an invaluable opportunity to link theory with practice. The students benefit by being able to rotate around several key areas of the Club, where they can begin to develop a range of skills. We look forward to the opportunity to work with the Club again in the future.” – Barry Fraser. During September and October, you may have met international undergraduate students, Chae-won Song (Lisa), Lai Yin Chan (Angel) and Qingyu Zhu (Amy) who are studying a Bachelor of International Tourism and Hospitality Management. Speaking with the students, Amy said “working at Southport Sharks was a great experience for me. The work environment is very good, everyone is sunny and active. I was happy working with my colleagues, and their willingness to help me learn more knowledge of the job. The two-month placement included learning about four positions – gaming attendant, bar attendant, receptionist, and food & beverage attendant in Carmody’s fine dining restaurant.” Fellow international student, Lisa spoke about her experience, “in Carmody’s Restaurant I learnt about specific red, white and sparkling wines from Carmody's Manager, Socky Soares. This opportunity helped me to develop product knowledge so that I can recommend wine to customers. By the end of the 10-week program, I gave better service than when I started my internship from the skills and knowledge I had learnt. I enjoyed Southport Sharks internship program, working with great staff and seeing good teamwork.”

? Y L L A W S ' WHO Wally Fankhauser is the reason Southport Sharks is a community leader it is today in sport, leisure and entertainment. It was his generous $2 million dollar donation in 1989 that bankrolled the club move from the humble shed in Owen Park to the ground at Musgrave Hill, which now bears the name of Wally Fankhauser Sports Reserve. The grandson of German immigrants, Wally’s early days were spent in Melbourne, where the family ran fruit orchards. He sold up in 1968 and moved to Queensland where he soon became a major player in real estate, with a couple of land package purchases. It was a chance meeting with a Southport supporter (then the Southport Magpies), who took him to the club’s watering hole, the Pacific Hotel. The rest is history. Apart from his generous donation to establish the Fankhauser Reserve set-up, Wally put in plenty of hard work and sweat. He personally bulldozed the mounds in place for what was once the headquarters of the Gold Coast District Rugby League and turned the area into a full-sized Aussie Rules football oval. Wally also served as Vice President for the club for 23 years until his untimely death in 1995. His son Rick Fankhauser, is still heavily involved with the club as a Director, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the industry as a previous Commercial Cook. It was this generous donation that inspired Southport Sharks' latest promotion, Win Wally's $2 Million - we're giving you the chance to win his $2 Million back! CAPTAIN WOW 60S, 70S, 80S, 90S, NOW DECEMBER 30 MAIN STAGE
Captain Wow is a four-piece cover band consisting of the talented Nick Waters, Courtney Hayes, Shonay Raynham and Jodie Davis. They play 60’s flower powered pop, 70’s disco, 80’s retro, reggae, country rock, and 90's to now hits. Captain Wow bring dynamic three-part harmonies, in a highly entertaining, energy packed show.
Nick, how long has the band been performing together? Originally from Tassie, Captain Wow Band were offered a lot of work on the Gold Coast. We decided to relocate to the Gold Coast and have been based here and gigging here since the early 90’s. I’m the only original member in the band. The three other artists I work with now have been with me for over three years now - they are awesome! Shonay and Courtney are singers, who play guitar and keyboard respectively. Jodie is a multi-instrumentalist who plays drums in our band, while I play guitar and sing. What is the bands style of music? We love vocal harmonies and that’s a big part of our sound. We perform songs from 60’s through to current tunes, ranging from pop, rock, reggae, funk, or country - we enjoy the variety in our repertoire! Our set list usually consists of playing a song that everyone sings along to early in the night, like The Lumineers, Amy Winehouse, Crowded House or Supertramp... then later change to songs people dance (and sing) to. Party time could be The Doors, Mamas and Papas, ABBA, Billy Ocean, B52’s, Elle King, Meghan Trainor or Vance Joy! It’s all about having fun with the audience, while covering the songs with conviction and sounding good.

Somethin sweet for our Valentine INGREDIENTS
METHOD
CUPCAKES
1.
Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a 12-count muffin pan with cupcake liners.
2.
Slice 8 strawberries and place in a food processor or blender. Pulse until strawberries are a puree - you should have about a ½ cup. Finely chop remaining strawberries. Using an electric mixer with a whisk attachment, beat the 3 egg whites on high speed in a medium bowl until soft peaks form, about 2-3 minutes. Set aside.
3.
Make the cupcakes Sift the flour, cornflour, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl. Set aside. Using an electric mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the butter on high speed until smooth and creamy - about 1 minute. Add the sugar, beat, then add the egg yolk and vanilla - beat until combined. With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients in three additions alternating with the milk until just combined. Do not overmix. Fold egg whites, 1/3 cup strawberry puree (keep the remaining puree aside for the icing), and finely chopped strawberries into the cupcake batter.
4.
Fill the cupcake liners halfway and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
5.
Make the icing Using an electric mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium speed until creamy about 2 minutes. Add icing sugar, left-over strawberry puree, cream, and vanilla extract with the mixer running on low. Increase to high speed and beat for 3 minutes. Add extra icing sugar if frosting is too thin or extra cream if frosting is too thick. Frost cupcakes.
12 large strawberries 1 large egg + 2 egg whites, room temperature & separated 2 cups plain flour ¼ cup cornflour 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 180g unsalted butter, softened to room temperature 1 ½ cups granulated sugar 3 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup full cream milk, room temperature STRAWBERRY BUTTERCREAM 235g unsalted butter, softened to room temperature 4 cups icing sugar 3 tablespoons cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Sommer Clark joined the Sharks Events Centre team this year as Sales Executive, bringing with her over seven years’ experience in the events industry.
UP CLOSE WITH SOMMER
SOMMER CLARK
Tell us about yourself? I’m a born and bred Goldie girl, growing up in Tugun. Exercise is actually a hobby of mine – currently working on building up my strength! My fiancée Xaan competes in Physique Body Building so we share our love of fitness and nutrition together. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Do you think your event experience will assist in the planning of your own wedding? Yes definitely! All my business relationships, contacts and exclusive vendors are certainly paying off at the moment and saving me a lot of money for my Hervey Bay wedding in April. What made you pursue a career in the events industry? I was originally working in a Pharmacy when I thought about a career in the events industry – the versatile nature of the career really appealed to me, I liked that every day would be different. I applied for work experience in Malaysia for the Marriott doing banquet events and loved it. Seven years on and I still love what I do. What do you enjoy most about your role at Sharks? I like meeting with an array of companies - learning about the nature of their business and fulfilling their individual event needs. For example, it has been a really good experience to work on the upcoming Gold Coast Sporting Awards Gala Dinner - it’s great that Sharks supports grassroots sports within the Gold Coast community and I feel lucky to be able to meet inspiring professionals from a spectrum of industries and sports. If you have upcoming event, you can speak to Sommer on 5532 1155 or email s.clark@southportsharks.com.au

T h u r s d ay, 1 5 FSouthport e b Sharks r u aproudly r ysupports 20grassroots 18 sport within the Gold Coast community and are
excited to host the 50th Anniversary of the Gold Coast Sporting Awards at Sharks Events Centre on 6.30pm arrival, 7pm start February 15 at 6.30pm. Councillor Dawn Crichlow presented Southport Sharks Club Patron, Mick Veivers and Club Director, Paul Stevens an award for sponsoring this event in early 2017, acknowledging the club for significantly contributing to the Gold Coast sporting community each year. The Gold Coast Sporting Stars Awards, originally founded by the Gold Coast Sporting Hall of Fame, recognises the Gold Coast’s prominent up-and-coming athletes, and encourages local sportspeople of all ages and disciplines to pursue a career in sport. The GC Hall of Fame is a sports museum and currently honours over 30 Gold Coast sporting champions, who have reached the highest level of sport whilst residing on the coast. Although the Mayor previously hosted the event, public interest has created demand for the event to be held in the spacious President’s Room of Sharks Events Centre with over 600 people expected to attend. We invite you to come along to this fantastic night and support local grassroots sport in the city.
Tables of 10 and individual tickets for the event can be purchased at sharkseventscentre.com.au

MEETPETE This year has been a big year for Southport Sharks’ Gaming and Promotions Manager, Peter Idder. Peter was voted in as the Club Managers Association’s (CMA) Gold Coast President in January and was also one of four people to be awarded a gaming bursary in July. The achievements are well-deserved for Peter, who has worked in the hospitality industry for 35 years and at Sharks for over 17 years, starting out as Duty Manager before transitioning to Gaming Manager in 2007. CMA is an industrial organisation of employees, with the unique position of having its members as both employees and also as employers, in their day-to-day management and administration of Registered & Licensed Clubs. “I was voted in as President at the AGM in February and have assisted with the implementation of various initiatives, like the Charity Race Day at the Gold Coast Turf Club, which aims to provide networking opportunities for members, so they can continue to grow professionally within the industry,” Peter explains. “The main aim of the association is to grow our members and provide them with education or training to further their skills within registered clubs - it’s great to be a part of that.” Peter’s passion for personal development is also what landed him the bursary trip in July. “The trip was a great experience,” he explains, “it helped me understand how large casinos think and operate with significant resources behind them.” The bursary included eight nights of travel with three other recipients from New South Wales, who together, visited Star City in Sydney, Crown Casino in Melbourne and Sky City in Auckland,
PAGE 33
New Zealand. The group gained insights into the casino’s processes, strategies and tactics, learning how they can provide further benefits to their club’s members in future. “I was pleased to see we shared a lot of similarities with Crown Casino operationally,” he says, “reinforcing we are on the right track at Sharks, because they are really good at what they do.”

With local community support, the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation raises funds to help children and adults in hospital suffering distress and hardship caused by illness and accidents every year.
Southport Sharks Juniors maintains junior sides starting at Auskick and working its way through to under 18’s and has in the vicinity of 350 junior participants. Your donation will further assist in growing and nurturing our AFL stars of the future.
Sharks Community Benefits Fund supports causes that align with the values and vision of the club. This fund creates a pool of money for distribution to different organisations in need on a quarterly basis. It allows the club to support causes that matter to our club community on an ad-hoc basis.
