At a glance with the CEO As the weather warms up, the club is also heating up with two of our major upcoming events, Melbourne Cup and Jingle & Mingle Christmas Party. These events are a great way to celebrate the respective occasions and bring together our valued members, local businesses, entertainers and loyal staff. To find out how to secure your spot at either of these events, see pages 22, 23 and 28. In football news, the 1998 and 2008 Southport Premiership Teams recently reunited at Cabana Bar & Lounge. Being a player in the 1998 premiership
side, it was a fantastic opportunity to catch up with ex-players and watch our team win by 103 points against the Canberra Demons. As of Round 20, we are sitting on top of the ladder and we wish the boys all the best for the finals - the first in many years. At Southport Sharks, we take pride in constantly supporting our staff in their personal goals and endeavours. Frenzy’s Commis Chef, Laura Blechner has been with us for over five years and was recently awarded a scholarship to study abroad for a semester, in Iceland. Laura has demonstrated outstanding focus on her studies, and has brought that work ethic to the Sharks team. Her interview is on page 6. Also, a huge congratulations to Sharon Karaka, from the Café, who represented Australia in Hockey at the Masters 2018 World Cup in Spain, securing the silver medal. For three consecutive years we have hosted an “Aussie” cultural experience with Study Gold Coast for the Mayors Student Ambassador Program. As such, Sharks continues its strong commitment to the local community, allowing students to undertake a tour of the club's facilities and participate in a footy coaching clinic. The program is designed to build and strengthen relationships between the Gold Coast community and the student population through cultural and social inclusion. We look forward to seeing you at the club this Spring. Dean Bowtell Chief Executive Officer

STAFF PROFILE
LAURA BLECHNER Meet Laura Blechner, who has worked at Southport Sharks for over five years as a Commis Chef and was recently awarded a scholarship taking her to Iceland for a semester. We spoke with her about this exciting opportunity.
Tell us about your journey as a Chef? I always loved travelling to different countries and trying the local food - I was fascinated how this impacted on all my senses. In 2007, when I moved from Brazil to Australia, I unfortunately wasn't able to work as an Environmental Scientist, which was the degree I held in Brazil. So, I started washing dishes in a local restaurant, and from watching the way the Chef worked, my interest developed as it also connected me to my travel experiences. Finally, the Chef let me try cooking some dishes and I loved it. I officially became a Chef in 2010 and have since worked in a few restaurants on the Gold Coast. I started at Southport Sharks in 2013 and have been working here since. I am so thankful to Southport Sharks for understanding and supporting my life as a university student and as a Chef. Sharks have provided me with the flexibility of working hours which has allowed me to work whilst studying.
Brazil
What is the scholarship and how did you come to be awarded it? I am studying a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Griffith University — Gold Coast. Toward the end of 2017, I received an award for academic excellence and for performing in the top 5% of Griffith University students. This then landed me the opportunity to get a semester scholarship at the University of Iceland, known for its leading teaching and scientific research institution in the field of molecular biology and medical science. When do you go and what are you hoping to learn from the experience? During the second half of 2018 I will be studying in Iceland. I am hoping to gain life experience and further knowledge in the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry field. Hopefully, this experience will help me stand out when pursuing a job in this field and help me achieve the career I always dreamed of.

Southport Sharks Human Resource Manager, Ann-Maree O'Neill, believes it's important for the business to be supportive of team members' learning and upskilling. "Sharks prides itself on supporting the community, and our involvement in the Health and Knowledge precinct. Due to our location we are very fortunate to have a lot of team members working with us while studying a diverse range of degrees. We want to see our staff follow their career aspirations and we support them by offering, for example, flexible working hours or relevant experience for their course."
"
"As a HR Manager, it is wonderful to be able to encourage employees to chase their dreams. Laura has done an outstanding job studying and working as a Chef. We look forward to Laura returning and contributing not only to Southport Sharks, but also to the wider community as she completes her Bachelor of Science." - Southport Sharks HR Manager, Ann-Maree O’Neill

Southport Sharks
REPORT
After two seasons in the football wilderness, Southport Sharks will return to finals football this September. Having spent numerous weeks sitting atop the NEAFL ladder, the 2018 Sharks will vie for their first Premiership since 2008.
during the season. Arch rivals Sydney University and Canberra Demons were both defeated by over 100 points at Fankhauser Reserve during the season, which has helped set up our return to September action.
The appointment of Steve Daniel as Senior Coach has been very successful for the club. The combination of Steve and the assistant coaches, Matthew Lappin and Aaron Cornelius, has seen the players educated on a new game plan, which the team has carried out to the letter.
I would like to thank a couple of volunteers whose hard work behind the scenes does not go unnoticed. Bob Langford and Alan Moroney give up countless hours during the season to help put the team on the field each week. These guys are key members of the Sharks team.
This year the club consulted Simon Fletcher, from Leading Teams, who were an integral part in the process of selecting the 2018 Leadership Group - Andrew Boston, Seb Tape, Ryan Davis, Jordan Taylor, Josh Clayton and Michael Manteit. The group has driven higher standards and a muchimproved culture.
Best of luck to the coaching staff and the players selected to represent the club during the finals.
The playing group have a very positive attitude, and this combined with a thirst to learn more about the game, has produced some very exciting football

AU S S I E C U LT U R E EXPERIENCE Study Gold Coast in collaboration with Gold Coast City Council have been celebrating our beloved coastline as a premier location for study opportunities since 2014. The 2018 Mayor's Student Ambassador Program continues to strengthen relationships between the Gold Coast community and international students. This year's program involved ambassadors comprising of 15 nationalities from 11 institutions. This richly diverse group visited Southport Sharks and spent the day diving deep into true Australian culture. After a private tour of the club led by CEO, Dean Bowtell, they learnt how to kick a footy from the best in the business, our General Manager of Football Operations, Jarrod Field and Senior Coach, Steve Daniel.
Southport Sharks is proud to be a part of this initiative that showcases what the Gold Coast has to offer.
The ambassadors then enjoyed traditional woodfire Napoli style pizzas in The Nest, a secluded outdoor area overlooking the Gold Coast skyline, located in Aviary Rooftop Bar.
"By students being exposed to these sorts of experiences, they are encouraged to consider their study options in our beautiful city and the potential career opportunities that may arise." - Dean Bowtell

WIN YOUR WEDDING
IMAGINE WINNING YOUR WEDDING Enter our wedding competition to be in with a chance of having a team of professionals ensure the smooth running of your magical day. We spoke with the wedding photographers about their involvement. Who is J'adore Photography and what is your unique touch as a wedding photographer? Our team has a passion for weddings, headed by Rob Brampton, myself and Isla Burkitt. We love to capture and create magical moments for people who share so much love for one another and provide photographs they will treasure forever. Being the person to create this is truly something special and something we pride ourselves on greatly. We are touched constantly by the powerful connections people share. Our empathy and compassion are reflected through our work. Why did you want to be involved in the Win Your Wedding competition campaign? When you love photography as much as we do, a small gesture to us can be something that makes a massive difference in someone else’s life. Especially in the wedding industry, where expenses can be quite high. We are happy to be able to give back to the local community in a way that is important and significant to us. What is it about photographing weddings that has made you want to work in the industry? Wedding days are filled with nothing but pure love. Love for one another, family and friends. It’s a day you won’t ever forget. From smiling, to crying, it is always from a place of love. I will be the first to admit Rob and I have been known to shed a tear or two throughout ceremonies.

The 90’s were an era of ripped jeans and flanno shirts… the time when Grunge, Pop Punk and Brit Pop was born. Smells Like the 90’s faithfully celebrates the music, outfits and the attitude of this classic decade. We caught up with the band to discuss all things 90’s ahead of their upcoming show at Southport Sharks this September. What can we expect from the Smells Like the 90’s Show? Audiences can expect a first-class production featuring the greatest hits of the 90’s from acclaimed artists such as Pearl Jam, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, Blink 182, The Offspring, Oasis and Blur – plus all the hits from the decade’s biggest band, Nirvana. It’ll be a high-energy, fun night out for re-living the era we all love and remember. What’s your favourite thing about the 90’s era? The amazing music that came from this decade. After the domination of New Wave and Glam-metal in the 80’s; Grunge, Brit Pop, Punk Rock and Alternate Rock emerged and took over as the most popular music of the decade. We love the attitude, angst and emotion of this music. It’s fun to play and we find audiences can’t help but dance and rock out to these classic tunes.
How did the band get together? The band is formed around core members and brothers, Ward (vocals/guitar) and Sol Freeman (bass). The pair have been playing, writing and touring together since 2002 and have experienced many highlights in their career including backing Angry Anderson and sharing stages with Jimmy Barnes, The Angels, Rose Tattoo, The Offspring and many more. The line-up is completed by Andre Lemberg (vocals/guitar) and Kai Browning (drums) who share a similar background of playing rock covers and originals in pubs and clubs across the country. A shared love of 90’s rock has brought the group together. The band has a ball playing all the hit songs we know and love. This passion and energy spills over to audiences creating a great vibe and memorable shows.

You may recognise Hayley Grace as she performs in Cabana Bar & Lounge at our Friday night acoustic sessions. However, she has recently taken a new angle and will be playing on our Main Stage with The Bay Collective in November. We caught up with her ahead of her first performance with the band at Sharks to see what we can expect. We know and love your acoustic sessions, does your sound differ when you perform with The Bay Collective? When I play solo acoustic sessions, I do a live looping show. Looping guitar, percussion, bass and vocals all together to create my own band. With The Bay Collective behind me, there’s no need for looping. I get to put all my instruments down and concentrate on just my vocals and dance moves. The Bay Collective is an explosion of horns, bass, drums, keys and a huge ensemble of incredible singers. We play everyone’s favourite funk and reggae tunes, as well as a few of our own. How did you and The Bay Collective get together? The Bay Collective has only just turned one! We are a group of friends from Byron Bay and after jamming in each other’s projects for some time we decided to all get together to form a super band. There are five lead vocalists within the band, who all have their own solo projects.
Within a few months of forming we were playing on The Crossroads Stage at Bluesfest - it’s been a wild ride! The band currently has a residency at Brisbane’s Eat Street, where you can find the whole band, as well the four-piece all girl line-up every weekend. What do you like about playing with a band rather than as a solo artist? Playing in the band is probably the most fun I’ve ever had. We spend every weekend travelling up and down the coast playing awesome shows, having crazy adventures, playing incredible music and I get to do it all with my best mates. It was a no brainer… though I do enjoy playing intimate solo shows, getting to share the stage with these legends is just too much fun. What’s the best way we can listen to your music? We are currently in the studio recording our debut album, until then you can find us on online on YouTube or Facebook. ENTERTAI

MENTAL HEALTH Mental health effects all age groups and demographics, with almost half the population between 16-85 years of age predicted to experience a mental disorder at some point. Thankfully, these issues are beginning to gain traction and grow in awareness. Southport Sharks Health + Fitness understands that poor mental health can be a contributing factor to poor physical health and aims to promote the importance of discussing and maintaining mental wellness.
As we head into Spring, SSH+F would like to share some tips to help keep your mental health on track: WORKING OUT ISN’T JUST PHYSICAL, YOUR BRAIN NEEDS TRAINING TOO Engaging in activities that test the brain, with a combination of memory, decision-making and strategising, keeps the mind active and prevents dementia. An extra tip: exercise in a group, as interaction can boost your mood too!
GOOD NUTRITION IS A NATURAL DEFENCE AGAINST STRESS Fuel your body with a nutritious breakfast (we recommend wholegrain cereals and fruits) and enjoy balanced meals throughout the day. Salmon, tuna and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and reduce the risk of dementia and mental decline.
PAGE 24
KEEP YOURSELF ACTIVE! Exercising not only keeps you physically strong but is a great form of stress relief and stress prevention. Go for a walk or unwind with yoga. Our trainers here at SSH+F recommend doing moderate exercise regularly rather than the occasional, hard-core workout. Three sessions a week is ideal.
A LAUGH A DAY WILL KEEP THE DOCTOR AWAY Humour activates the brains reward and pleasure centres, generating positive emotions and relaxing the mind. Life is stressful, but don’t take it too seriously. Remember to take care of yourself and laugh yourself silly!
STRESS CAN BE MANAGED SSH+F recommends making a list of goals and checking them off once completed. Not only will you stay focused and organised, you get to reward yourself and feel a sense of accomplishment. Your body will thank you for it!
November is Wellness Month at SSH+F with plenty of activities to help you with your mental and physical health. Stay tuned for more details! SSH+F is proud to donate to organisations like Headspace and LIVIN who assist those suffering from mental health issues. Shop the LIVIN range at SSH+F today and do your bit to support those in need.
