At a glance with the CEO
The club is buzzing with excitement in the lead up to the opening of Mantra at Sharks, just prior to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. We are proud to see the finishing touches being made to the 120-room hotel and are excited to share this new offering with you all, including our new rooftop bar, Aviary. Carefully designed to reflect the natural surrounds, Aviary is nestled up and away from the hustle and bustle, providing an escape from the everyday. Featuring iconic Gold Coast skyline views, cinema area and The Nest, a distinctive private area available for special occasions and events, Aviary will serve up authentic, Italian wood-fired pizzas – the perfect accompaniment to the premium beverage selections on offer. Our friendly and professional Events team are now taking bookings for functions, meetings or conferences, and are happy to tailor a package to best suit your individual or corporate needs. Due to our proximity to the Athletes’ Village and the Gold Coast Hockey Centre, there will be plenty of atmosphere in and around the club during the Commonwealth Games. Southport Sharks will become the official ‘Hockey House’ for Hockey Australia and will be the central meeting point for all hockey fans. Sharks is the place to be on April 7 when the Australian Men and Womens Hockey teams play, as well as April 14, when a special Hockey Australia event will take place in Sharks Events Centre after the Finals. We have planned some exciting events throughout the Games and look forward to you joining us for this historic moment on the Gold Coast. We hope to see you at the club during this momentous period and that you enjoy your 2018 Commonwealth Games experience. I know the entire Sharks team will be proudly cheering on our athletes in the green and gold! Dean Bowtell Chief Executive Officer

Each year, the Golden Shark is awarded to a team member who displays exceptional honesty, teamwork, industry practice and positive customer experience. Out of the nine incredible employees nominated, Ryan Doolan, (nominated for the Catering - Kitchens department), came out on top. Ryan was presented the 2017 Golden Shark Award and a $2,000 travel voucher by CEO Dean Bowtell, at the 2017 Team Member Christmas Party. Born and bred on the Gold Coast, Ryan joined the Sharks family in 2002, working in all areas of the kitchen while he completed his Chef apprenticeship. Ryan has gone on to complete his Diploma of Management, giving him a huge career and confidence boost. He demonstrated an immense dedication to the club and a strong ability to work in high-pressure team environments, which made him a prime candidate for this award.
Ryan describes working at Sharks as “leading the way” and he “loves the pressure this puts on us to change and move forward with new ideas, staying ahead of the times.” With his travel voucher, Ryan plans to travel to New York to complete a food safari, involving cooking classes that will further fuel his passion for fine dining and his culinary skills. “Winning the Golden Shark means the world to me as I’ve seen a lot of change over the past 16 years that I have worked at Southport Sharks. It’s great to know I have the support of my fellow colleagues and management, to both succeed and use industry skills to help the club grow and move forward”. Congratulations Ryan!

Cabana
FOR THE
Community Cabana Bar & Lounge Manager, Tanja, felt compelled to raise funds after a holiday to Dominican Republic shortly after the 2017 hurricane season. On Sunday, 11 February Cabana hosted a fundraiser for a small community in the Dominican Republic who experienced devastating damage, particularly Hurricane Irma. Tanja, why Dominican Republic as a holiday destination? My mum had an amazing experience in the Dominican Republic, expressing that the locals are the nicest and most genuine people she has ever met.
How did you feel about arriving after watching Hurricane Irma hit the Caribbean on the news? Our flight got pushed back by two days because Hurricane Irma hit the Dominican Republic. We considered cancelling our holiday, but the hurricane had passed so we decided to go. What was the atmosphere like when you arrived in the Dominican Republic and how were the local people coping? There were powerlines down everywhere, flooding on the streets, massive trees ripped out of the ground, houses blown over and roofs ripped off. Locals were trying their best to fix what was broken. They were still all very friendly and tried to keep a happy face for tourists, but you could see how much they had been affected.
You had a tour of the poorer areas, what did you learn? I realised how lucky we are in Australia and how much we can easily take things for granted. Dominican people are still so happy with what they have, and they value their family so much. Many areas don’t even have drinking water. I think being a country so far away from Australia, the imagery we see of the Dominican Republic is usually beautiful beaches with luxurious hotels, you don’t realise how much the local community need assistance. What motivated you to host a fundraising event? Experiencing how genuine and friendly the Dominicans are - even when not having much. I wanted hold this fundraiser to help some of the poorest children on the streets. The funds will give them an opportunity to access education, health and resources to rebuild homes after the hurricanes. Tell us a bit about the charities and how they help the local children… All revenue from ticket sales, auction items and raffle tickets sold are being donated to a small, locally run charity in Higüey City. They look after less fortunate children, especially homeless and sick children on the streets, providing medical support, clothing, education, and food.
TOTAL FUNDS RAISED
$3,718 Tanja is returning to the Dominican Republic in April to visit the charities and you can follow her visit through Cabana Bar & Lounge’s social media channels… keep an eye out. Thank you for your support and thanks to all partners of Sharks who assisted with donated prizes for this event.

CELEBRATING MUMS AT SHARKS Southport Sharks has some amazing long-standing team members at the club, including Café Team Leader, Lesley Bartlett who is approaching 19 years of employment. She attributes her long career at Sharks to the amazing people and workplace culture at the club, always giving her a reason to come to work with a smile. Lesley encouraged two of her children to join the team at Sharks for this very reason and is grateful to work alongside both Gavin (who works in the Kitchen and Car Park) and Emma (who has worked in Gaming and in Crèche for nearly four years).
While at work, Lesley enjoys catching up with Gavin three times a week on their lunch break. A highlight of the week for Lesley is having the grandchildren on Monday mornings when Emma is working in the Crech, she loves taking them to dance classes and play groups. Lesley values having her family together and gathers everyone at her place once a week for a home-cooked dinner. For Mother’s Day, Gavin said “the whole family gets together and treats mum to a delicious breakfast at a café."
“Mum is the best, she does everything for us and doesn’t stop!” – Emma

For many people during the 1980’s, Dire Straits was the quintessential rock group releasing some of the biggest hits that remain embedded in music culture to this day. Money for Nothin - The Australian Dire Straits Experience is a 5-piece tribute band, honouring this iconic time in music. We caught up with Terry, the lead vocalist to get to know the band. How did you get together? After years of playing in other tribute shows I decided it was time to put together a tribute show of my favourite band, Dire Straits. I hand-picked the members based on their playing skills, experience and passion for music. Andy on bass and Ray on guitar were from previous bands I had played in, while Alec on drums was recommended by Andy. I contacted Gary for the saxophone spot and he introduced me to Brad on keyboards as they have known each other for years and had played in bands together including the INXS tribute show. We got together in November 2017 and we just clicked! What started your passion for music, Dire Straits in particular? I have always loved music from an early age- it must be in my DNA. I grew up in an era when rock guitarists were at their peak and I have many heroes and influences including David Gilmore, Angus Young, Albert Lee and Chuck Berry - the list goes on. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits guitarist) stood out from the crowd for me, because he played differently, so expressive and melodic with
a clean tone. It was very hard to replicate his sound. It wasn't until I figured out he didn't use a pick and only played with his fingers, that I started to unlock the magic of playing like him. Our generation didn't have the internet or YouTube, we had to figure these things out from listening over and over or seeing the bands live. What's your favourite thing about performing live shows? Seeing the people in the crowd react to the music in a positive way. Whether they get up and dance, smile or remember a happy time in their life, sing along or just chill and enjoy the music - it's our reward for all the hours of practice and honing our craft. We like to think of the positive vibes we send so that people can escape their everyday lives, even if it is for just a few hours. What's the best way we can listen to your music? The show is quite new and we are working on providing more content, but we showcase our music on Facebook, YouTube and Soundcloud. @moneyfornothinaus

With a world of experience and excellence in execution, the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s are brought back to life and the party never ends. Consisting of four lead vocalists, five instrumentalists and great harmonies. Formed in 2009 through an impromptu meeting at a party, The Anchormen have been entertaining audiences ever since with their party band stage presence. With Rick Shaw on Bass, Johnny Mustang on Lead Guitar, Lou Blue on Drums, Cliff Hanger on Lead Guitar and Hugh Jorgan on the Keyboard, the band combines their vocals and instruments to produce that unique sound the Gold Coast has grown to love. With Miss T taking on lead vocals, every classic is faithfully reproduced. From the big hits of the 70’s to the pop and glam of the 80’s and a touch of classic early grunge from the 90’s, they’ve got it all. The band covers songs from Cold Chisel, AC/DC, The Eagles and The Doobie Brothers… all the way to Blues Brothers, Bon Jovi and Queen.

SOUTHPORT SHARKS REMEMBERS THOSE WHO FOUGHT
BRAVELY FOR OUR COUNTRY IN ALL PAST AND PRESENT CONFLICTS
LEANNE DOOLAN – DEMI CHEF Hailing from the gorgeous town of Merimbula on the southern NSW coast, Leanne has been with the Sharks family for 8 years, finishing her final two years of her apprenticeship here. She moved to the Gold Coast a decade ago, pursuing work opportunities. Working mainly with the Shark Events Centre team, Leanne’s passion is for desserts. She has always been inspired by her grandmother, who she remembers whisking sponge cakes by hand, and started baking herself at age seven, after receiving her first cookbook from her mother. What does this dessert lover enjoy most… “anything with chocolate!”

ARE YOU GETTING QUALITY SLEEP? Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle. Combined with healthy eating and exercising, it can benefit your heart, weight, mind and more. Whilst we know the value of sleeping well, in our busy society, many of us are not getting the quality sleep needed to truly receive the health benefits. Often our environments interfere with natural sleep patterns decreasing our sleep quality. If you, or someone you know, struggles with a good night’s sleep, some of these simple things might help: Exercise. As little as 15-minutes of aerobic exercise, such as cycling or walking, can improve the quality of your sleep - especially if done on a regular basis. Try to exercise 3-6 hours before bedtime to get the maximum sleep benefits. If evenings are the only time you can exercise, then make it light exercise. Relax. Avoid activities that are stimulating an hour before bed - watching movies, staring at your mobile phone and important discussion or decisions. Being in a brightly lit environment or taking in the blue light from a computer or mobile phone, can reduce evening levels of the sleep-promoting hormone, melatonin. Routine. Try to go to bed at the same time each night. Your body has an internal clock and hormones to control sleepiness and wakefulness. This clock works best if there is a regular sleep routine. Meals. The evening meal should be at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Don’t go to bed on a full stomach. If you find you get hungry before bedtime, try a light snack 45 mins before bedtime. Mindfulness. Keep the hour before bed as your wind down time. Listen to quiet music or do relaxation. We can never shut off our minds completely, and thoughts continue constantly, but try to keep focus on calm thoughts - think of your favourite place, or daydream about your next holiday. Wanting to increase your exercise routine to assist with sleep? With over 110 group classes per week, a functional training area and modern change room facilities, experienced Personal Trainers and small group training programs, Southport Sharks Health + Fitness is one of the top fitness centres on the Gold Coast. Find out more on our website, visit SSH+F reception or phone (07) 5591 5800.

Southport Sharks is a club built on community spirit and aims to be an active part of the local Gold Coast community by supporting a wide range of not-for-profit organisations. One of these organisations, Friends With Dignity, will hold their annual ‘High Tea With Friends’ event on Saturday, 26 May in Sharks Events Centre.
100% self-funded and run by a dedicated team of passionate volunteers, the annual Friends With Dignity High Tea aims to raise critical funding through ticket sales, fun raffles and live auctions throughout the day. Your admission includes a complimentary glass of bubbles, guest speaker and a whole lot of fun.
Friends with Dignity is a national charity organisation that assists families and individuals displaced by domestic and family violence. Friends With Dignity was built on the foundation that change is achieved through community engagement. Their programs encourage individuals, groups and organisations to actively initiate change by providing practical ways in which we can all ‘Step Up, Speak Out and Support’.
We invite you to gather your friends and enjoy an afternoon of fine food, friends and inspirational guest speakers, all while raising funds for a good cause and increasing awareness of the realities of domestic violence. Visit southportsharks.com.au for more information or to purchase tickets to the event.

MEET OUR NEW RECRUITS The 2018 footy season for the Southport Sharks is shaping up to be an exciting year, with one of the biggest list turnovers to date.
RHYS CLARK Number: 12 Position: Defender Previous Clubs: Kyabram Why Southport? I've been looking for an opportunity to take my game to the next level. I was looking to play VFL football before I got the call from Steve Daniel. He really sold me on the coaching staff in charge heading into 2018, which is filled with years of experience and knowledge. The players recruited to the club this year bring a great deal of experience and after only a few training sessions, the boys are really starting to gel together on and off the field. Already it's visible this team is positioned to see success in the 2018 season. The Gold Coast itself was also a drawcard for me after living in Victoria my whole life, I was sick of the cold weather. I've always wanted to move up this way and this opportunity lead me to pack my bags and make the move.
BRAD MCDONALD Number: 27 Position: Forward Previous Clubs: Palm Beach/Ballarat Why Southport? Southport Sharks FC has a rich and proud history, so when I was given the opportunity to be a part of that competing at a high level, it was an offer I couldn't refuse. I'm really looking forward to the challenge ahead and expanding my knowledge of the game under some of the best coaches in the country. Moving up from Victoria last year, it was always my goal to play at this standard with the Sharks, so I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the season!
Noa Corbett Number: 11 Position: Forward Previous Clubs: Nth Adelaide/Surfers Why Southport? After playing in the SANFL for a year I wanted to move back home and still play at the highest level of footy I could. Southport has a strong history and stood out as the best place to go. I know a lot of blokes already playing here so it was an easy decision to get on board.
Jordan Taylor Number: 15 Position: Defender Previous Clubs: Sth Adelaide/Murray Bushrangers Why Southport? A couple of my close mates were moving to the Gold Coast and I felt like I was ready for a change of scene. I had also heard that Steve Daniel was going to be coaching and I had heard a lot about his record as a coach - people I know who played under Steve had spoken highly of him.
Josh Clayton Number: 10 Position: Midfield Previous Clubs: Brisbane Lions Why Southport? After being drafted to the Brisbane Lions the opportunity to continue living in Queensland was too good to pass up. I am really looking forward to Southport's next successful era.
MICHAEL MANTEIT Number: 4 Position: Midfield Previous Clubs: Sydney Uni/Collingwood Why Southport? The opportunity to live on the Gold Coast and be closer to family, while still playing NEAFL football. The club has fantastic facilities and a rich history.
Brenton Payne Number: 3 Position: Forward Previous Clubs: Nth Ballarat/St Kilda Why Southport? After a stint playing in the AFL, I was keen to explore a new start to my football career and living on the Gold Coast certainly appealed to me. It would be great to win a premiership with Southport, as we have a very exciting list of players and coaches.
