2016 ANNUAL REPORT
SOUTH SHORE YMCA
100% of your donations to the Change A Life Fund are used to ensure that all members of our community can participate in all Y programs. In 2016, you donated $2,843,085 to change lives on the South Shore.
HOW YOU CHANGED A LIFE “I never dreamed in a million years that I’d be using a food pantry. I’m a father of two small children. I had a decent job. We were not rich, but we had a small home and food on the table. We were happy. It didn’t last long. I was laid off. We were living off of my unemployment and I was afraid of what the future held. I saw the money dwindling month by month, most of it going towards the mortgage. I cried. How is my family going to survive? We lost our home and we ended up homeless. We had been living in a shelter for two years. Last year we moved to our new apartment. Things are still difficult to manage and the advocate that works with my family suggested that I use the Mobile Food Pantry that comes to the building every week. I swallowed my pride again and I went. I had to do what I had to do for my family. I felt humiliated and I think the woman in charge knew. She took me aside and did the paperwork. It was painless and they gave me five bags of fresh groceries. I was told I could come back every week. This has taken so much stress off me. I am able to focus on my other bills. The staff that come gave me hope and confidence that my family will make it through this and have given more resources to help.” Volunteers from the Y’s Germantown Neighborhood Center’s Mobile Food Pantry help load food.
Thanks to donors like you, this family’s life changed for the better.
PRESIDENT & CHAIRMAN’S LETTER Our Annual Report is designed, from cover to cover, to say one thing and one thing only: thank you. Thank you to all of you who have donated to the South Shore YMCA, for believing in our mission and for entrusting us with shaping the capacity to carry it out. Thank you for making things happen. The YMCA’s three pillars of Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility are broadly defined for a reason. The circumstances of life on the South Shore change on a daily basis, and we must be ready at a moment’s notice to alter our focus to help our friends and neighbors adapt and grow. Toward that end, we run more than 100 different programs for all ages, constantly rethinking them to meet needs, and make them available to everyone through our financial assistance program, the Change A Life Fund. And it’s all thanks to you. We are proud to report that not only have we completed our most recent three-year strategic plan, we have measured up well against it. We provided $9.6 million of financial assistance between 2013 and 2016, showing an increase of 54% during that time. We increased the individuals we serve by 25%, and doubled the number of children and families served through our school age childcare and early learning programs. Across the board we showed strength, growth and potential for even greater future results. We are therefore pleased to present our 2016 Donor Report to you in recognition of your support. Together, we create a rock solid foundation from which early learning journeys begin; from which families are fed, and encouraged to fight their way out of poverty; and from which seniors can gather with friends and maintain good health. Together, we are changing lives. Thank you.

THE TASTE OF THE SOUTH SHORE On March 24, more than 550 friends, supporters and members of the South Shore YMCA gathered at Lombardo’s for the 20th annual Taste of the South Shore, sponsored by Stop & Shop. The event raised $212,945 to benefit the Y’s Send a Kid to Camp appeal, providing funds for 852 kids to partake in week-long immersive camp programs across the association during the summer of 2016. One mom of a camper witnessed growth and maturation in her son firsthand after he spent a session at camp. “Words cannot begin to explain what Camp Burgess has done for Brett,” she said. “He is right in his element when he is there. Camp has given him so much confidence, self-assurance, built up his self-esteem and given him so much happiness.” Azilee, a camper, saw the growth in herself. “I returned home after those first two weeks having tapped into an unfamiliar part of me and realized that leaving my comfort zone, although a daunting task at first, can lead to indescribable discoveries and unforgettable memories.”

GOLF CLASSIC Each July, Y members and donors take to the links in celebration of advancing the South Shore Y mission. On July 13, 2016, 240 golfers met at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth and raised $133,000 for our Partnership Program. Through Partnership, the Y allies volunteers with people with disabilities, allowing them to comfortably exercise with all in the workout communities, in our gyms and our pools. Steve Kuketz, a Partnership Program participant, used his newly-rediscovered love of golf after the tournament to reach a life’s goal. “I am a one armed one eye blind golfer, and well, I did it all perfectly,” he said after hitting a hole-in-one at the Leo J. Martin Golf Course in Quincy on August 1. “It landed dead on, hitting the fringe, a short hop or two, then a slow roll… and there! It dropped into the 4.25" diameter cup. I was so excited and thinking it’s been twenty five years since I have played my last round of golf, and thinking how thankful I am to be a participant at the YMCA, exercising, building strength and new friendships. It's been amazing!”

RODMAN RIDE With beautiful fall weather all around, 32 riders representing the South Shore YMCA sprinted from the starting line in Foxboro to ride their chosen 25, 50, or 100 miles in support of Inclusion programs across the SSYMCA Association. Shannon’s daughter Kendall was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and entered crucial therapy sessions to help her build lifelong skills. In order to expand Kendall’s horizons, Shannon enrolled her in the South Shore Y’s Building Bridges program. “Building Bridges gives Kendall a chance to interact with peers in a fun, safe and structured environment. It allows her to learn a sense of community and being part of a group. Turn taking, sharing interests, likes, dislikes and learning how to safely navigate through the YMCA building are just a few things they work on in group. We feel fortunate to have a local YMCA that has such wonderful Inclusion programs and people who teach and engage our children.”

ENCHANTED EVENING Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors and guests, our Enchanted Evening Gala raised $454,550 in support of Germantown Neighborhood Center’s life-changing programs and services. The center is a place of hope, where life’s necessities are cared for so that individuals and families in need can accomplish the things they need to in order to help their families grow. Donations to Germantown support everything from the food pantry to domestic violence counseling to mentoring programs for college-bound teens. Obehi and her mom moved from a domestic violence shelter into a new home in Germantown. Obehi remembers being angry at the unfairness of having to grow up without basic necessities, and credits the Germantown Neighborhood Center and Kathy Quigley for getting her in a better frame of mind as she approached the important high school years. “She got me enrolled with the summer camp, meeting kids that have been through similar things, or being with counselors who have been through certain things, and not feeling like I’m going to be judged for how I lived, or how I’m living.” Obehi turned her life’s trajectory around, graduating high school and enrolling in college. More than that, she’s ready to help others. “I’m gonna come back, and give back. I’m gonna do the same thing that people did for me. The Germantown Neighborhood Center was with us every step of the way.”

CAMP CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
The power of Resident Camp is most readily heard in its common spaces, where campers gather not just to eat, but to communally sing, show camaraderie and to grow and learn together. It’s in the gathering spaces that they make friends, find inspiration and begin journeys on roads they wouldn’t otherwise travel. Thanks to our donors, in 2016 the South Shore Y built several new such places – a new dining hall at Camp Hayward, which can seat 400 campers and staff; the Neal Tompkins Memorial Barn at Camp Burgess; and two new cabins at Camp Hayward - that will not only carry on the spirit of Camp, but will invite more campers and their families to become part of the Camp Burgess and Hayward family. As we complete phase one of our Camp Capital Campaign, we will build two more cabins and a treehouse at Camp Hayward in 2017, and a treehouse at Camp Burgess in 2018.
