Southwest Florida is growing on us The community growth we foster as the economic catalyst and cultural hub of Southwest Florida. The personal growth we nurture – 9 out of 10 of our 34,206 alumni are employed and say we made their lives better, with 20 percent owning their own business. The university growth we make happen – our new Water School, Community Counseling Center, School of Entrepreneurship and Construction Management program all were created to meet specific demands in our region.
FGCU and Southwest Florida have grown on each other, making both of us stronger. That’s the FGCU Effect.

GREETINGS “Now what does all this mean in this great period of history? It means that we’ve got to stay together. (Yeah) We’ve got to stay together and maintain unity” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Colin Powell once said, “the ties that bind us are stronger than the occasional stresses that separates us.’’ This quote gathers the essence of what we seek to spotlight every year during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Celebration. A series of events that sponsors, spotlight and initiates a sense of unity around education, empowerment and service to the community. There is no better time to address the collective inequities, as well as the need for diversity and inclusion then the time we have set aside to honor Dr. King. It took individuals of all races, genders, political parties, sex orientation and religious backgrounds to bring the reform to the country that was needed in the 60s and if we seek to continue to form a more perfect union it will take this coalition of people to continue the work. Thomas Paine sad “These are the times that try a man’s soul”, these are the times that decide who we will be as a people. These are the times where we can decide where we as a people move toward in this next decade. It is my hope that this weekend contributes to the idea that we as a people, despite race, gender, religion or sexuality, are Better Together. Best Regards,
Martin Byrd Jr.

ABOUT The MLK Ecumenical service was established in the late 1980s after a conversation. The need to create this event to bring churches together across denominations materialized. Every year the MLK Ecumenical Service is hosted at a local church bringing together Protestants, Catholics, Jews and Muslims.
Under the Guidance of Reginald Billups and many others, the Dunbar Festival Committee, Inc. went back and forth on whether to put on a March or Parade. The Parade concept was popular across the country as a staple MLK event however the commemorative March concept seemed to be the best option. The march is an opportunity to relive the history of yesterday, see the struggles of today in order to look forward to a better tomorrow. The Commemorative March continues to end at Centennial Park. A vision of then President of the NAACP Lodovic Kimble, the idea to cross the train tracks into downtown Fort Myers is symbolic. It is at the Park where churches do their annual fundraiser as a vendor and organizations inform citizens of their purchases. Food is a huge draw, has many businesses and groups gather under the bridge to sell all different types of food. On the City of Fort Myers stage you will see youth groups, fraternities, sororities, churches and hear about those who have partnered and sponsored to make MLK Day a success.
Presented By Dunbar Festival Committee, Inc.
The Commemorative March will began at the corner of High and Blount Street in front of the Dunbar Community School. Those looking to March need to bring strong voices for singing and chanting as the march makes its way down Dr. King Blvd into Centennial Park. There will be a sign-up on location for any groups that will be participating. The largest group to participate will be honored with a traveling trophy. Marchers may arrive as early as 10:00 a.m. for drinks and healthy snacks provided by the SWFL Haitian Coalition. Stepping, Dancing, Singing, BBQ, Seafood, Social Services and Local Businesses vendors are just some of the things you will see as you enter Centennial Park on MLK Day. The Park Celebration is an opportunity for families, organizations and non-profits, to gather and enjoy a great time. The Alliance for the Arts, Junior League of Fort Myers, Lee County Black History or just some of the supporters that will be doing activities at the Park.
Purpose: To provide a one-time scholarship to (2) eligible youth from 11th and 12th grades to pursue their post high school education. Diane Spears Nursing Director Lee Health It is my honor and pleasure to support the Dunbar Festival Committee in your efforts to support our community and keeping King’s dream alive. This reminds us how he worked to drive out the darkness and hate to replace it with light and love. We all must give back to our communities and our country with kindness in our hearts, love and respect for each other. In everything we do it in light and love. And as Martin Luther King said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”My work in our community comes from my love of people. Caring for those who need the help most brings me great joy. It’s my pleasure to bring hope, healthcare and education to those in need. My goal in life is to enrich lives and serve others. -
