World Golf Village is a destination resort and residential community in St. Augustine, Florida, just 30 minutes south of Jacksonville and 100 miles northeast of Orlando on Florida’s First Coast. The Village is home to the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum, the international institution that preserves and honors the history of golf and the legacies of those who have made it great.

n 1995, we crafted our first autumn seasonal— Pumpkin Ale. At the time, Oktoberfest beers were in high demand. For our version, we wanted to create a beer that was a little different than what was already out there and complemented the season by highlighting the flavors we’ve all grown to love during this time. It was so popular that it became the first nationally available pumpkin ale. Harvest Pumpkin Ale, as it’s called now, is crafted with pumpkin and spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice for a taste you’ll want to fall right into.
On Saturday, Sept. 7, the South Texas Golf Association will hold its first charity golf scramble with proceeds benefiting the Love Thy Neighbor Service Organization. You can help so many children in need. The Martin Chiropractic Clinic is located at 206 West Nolana in McAllen. You can call their clinic at (956) 682-7351
AVAILABLE TREATMENT
Spinal decompression is an FDA approved non-surgical procedure designed to alleviate pressure on the nerves caused by bulging or herniated discs. Distraction of the spine gently separates the vertebrae from one another, creating a vacuum effect within the disc. This process draws in water, oxygen, and nutrient rich fluids into the disc. This promotes retraction of the herniated or bulging disc material and facilitates faster healing. Although many of these processes occur microscopically, multiple cycles of decompression and relaxation to the spine create a viable corrective procedure for many bulging or herniated discs. In a majority of cases comprehensive muscle, ligament, and joint work is also required to achieve the full effect. At Martin Chiropractic Clinic we combine the latest techniques such as Graston and Active Release Technique to treat the surrounding musculature, along with spinal manipulation to induce proper joint motion. The cold laser is also utilized to promote optimal healing of soft tissues comprising the disc. This three-pronged approach of treating the nerve, muscle,
and joint has proven to be a successful non-surgical alternative to patients suffering from disc injuries. As a younger athlete it is imperative that you maintain the health of your spine to avoid more serious complications later in your life. Accelerated degeneration of the discs in the spine can occur when repetitive stress on the disc continues without proper care. For older athletes, it is not too late to experience the benefit of spinal decompression as many degenerative cases have responded very well to treatment.
Appearance: Deep amber-colored ale with brilliant clarity and a rich, white head.
ACCOMMODATIONS
The Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village is the “Official Resort of the World Golf Hall of Fame,” offering 300 luxurious renovated guest rooms and suites. Located next to the Hall of Fame, the resort offers spectacular views overlooking the Village’s lake and golf courses. Guests are able to enjoy
Aroma: Very complex aroma consisting of malty spice notes.
Taste: Starts out with assertive malty notes and is quickly balanced with the right amount of harvest spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. There’s a small amount of bitterness to keep the malt sweetness from building up.
WHAT IS IT LIKE?
For low back decompression, patients should expect to be placed on a table with comfortably padded straps securing the upper and lower body. Decompression therapy of the spine is generated by a computerized motor that separates the table at a precise level. The amount of tension is determined by the patient’s body weight. It is designed for minimal discomfort, and patients often read a book or peruse on their iPads while receiving treatment. Minimal muscle soreness and pain have been reported after the initial stages of treatment, but ice can be utilized to minimize these effects. Whether you have been diagnosed with a disc injury through an MRI, or have the possibility of a disc injury, a non-surgical approach in spinal decompression may be a viable alternative to treating the problem.
IMAX THEATER
As part of the World Golf Hall of Fame experience, guests can enjoy a film at the World Golf Hall of Fame IMAX® Theater. The Theater has recently undergone an upgrade to IMAX 3D Digital. This upgrade makes it the largest IMAX Digital 3D screen in the Southeastern United States.

GOLF COURSES
World Golf Village features two 18hole championship golf courses with special ties to the World Golf Hall of Fame. The King & Bear, named respectively for its Hall of Fame member co-designers Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, opened in 2000. It is the first and only course design collaboration between the two golf legends. The second course, Slammer & Squire, opened in 1998 and was designed by Bobby Weed with consultants Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen, both Hall of Fame members.
PLAY A ROUND IN THEIR SHOES Mouthfeel: A medium-bodied ale with just enough carbonation to balance the rich caramel character.
WHAT TO EAT WITH IT? The flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and the other harvest spices pair well with beef dishes and seasonal soups
Finish: Finishes with a smooth, clean malt and spice taste. Hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and malt gradually fade.

LAUREN VILLARREAL
Travel: Bucket List for every golfer: The World Golf Hall of Fame
Although most people feel golf is a sport of leisure that one plays on a weekend morning, the truth is golf is in most cases a very serious and competitive sport
and then heading to tournaments. She went from Pre-K to her freshman year in a small private school, First Baptist Church of Brownsville. She expected to not like golfing. “I felt like I would be the only one who didn’t know what I was doing,” Lauren said. “It was a little intimidating to see the whole golf team. ” Even after getting accustomed to the golf team, there was still tournaments. “There were a lot of things I didn’t expect. I sure didn’t expect those horrible tan lines from the sun,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting the heat at all. I wasn’t expecting the roughness of the golf courses. I didn’t process anything until I actually got there.” Lauren remembers her fears heading into her first tournament. The girl she was paired with also came from a small private school and was in her
first tournament. They both knocked their first tee shots into the water, and the nerves started to subside. “It was a relief I wasn’t the only one scared,” Lauren said. “Ever since then if I would se somebody who looked like I used to look I would go up to them and tell them not to be scared.” Lauren and comes from a musically gifted family. Her father started and is pastor at River of Life Family Church and her mom is the worship leader. She said everyone in her family sings and plays at least one instrument. Lauren said she joined FCA at Pace to help keep her grounded. Moving to a much larger school – opened her eyes and showed her staying close to Christian friends was crucial. “When I got into public school it was shocking because the world was so different than what I had known,” she said. “I saw all these things that were scary and weird. A lot of people say they are Christian but are so messed up and I didn’t want to be like that.”

auren Villarreal was getting bored. Having to take a hiatus from high-intensity sports such as basketball or volleyball, the senior was aching for something to do. So, she approached Brownsville Pace Golf Coach Ronnie Zamora and asked him to tell her about golf. “It’s awesome,” was his initial reply. “I’m going to need more than that,” she recalled jokingly. She didn’t need much more convincing. When the season started she was on the team, a first-time golfer, and playing in the No. 1 spot for the Lady Vikings. When the season ended she had been named to the honorable mention team for District 32-5A. Lauren has been named the South Texas Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Female Golf of the Year, sponsored by South Texas Golf Magazine. Lauren, a graduating senior for Brownsville Pace, hasn’t decided if she will try out for the UT-Brownsville team as she begins her studies in the medial field, aiming to become an OB/GYN. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, according to its website fca.org, has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in the world. “Lauren’s mom is a teacher at Pace and told me that she might be interested in the golf team and I said we’ll take her in,” Zamora said. “She came in right away and was very hard working. She was one of the most determined players I’ve had in my four years and she got better every day.” Lauren said she was extremely nervous when it came to joining the team
GOLF INSTRUCTION
The PGA TOUR Golf Academy features a state-of-the-art learning center with all-weather hitting bays that sit in the shadow of the World Golf Hall of Fame. The top-rated instructors incorporate three teaching and video analysis systems into the lessons that range from private instruction, two- to five-day golf schools, as well as outings and clinics for groups of all sizes.
Former Major League Baseball pitcher Randy Johnson was known for having a formidable 100-mile-per-hour fastball with consistency over his 22-year career that included five Cy Young Awards, (the highest honor for major league pitchers) and a 2001 World Series Championship, with the Arizona Diamondbacks where he shared the Most Valuable Player Award. Although Johnson is known for his many achievements, he is also an avid watch collector. Luxury watch power house manufacturer, Ulysse Nardin presented a Maxi Marine Diver called the “Big Unit,” in honor of Johnson, one of Major Leagues greatest left handed baseball pitchers. Limited to 100 pieces worldwide, each watch comes with an autographed signed baseball by Johnson, and is presented in a special presentation case crafted in white leather with red stitching. Johnson, who stands 6-foot-10 and is the all-time left-handed strikeout leader with 4,875 strikeouts – only behind Nolan Ryan all-time, said he compares having a luxury timepiece named after him among his greatest honors, as far as public acceptance. “I thought it was pretty cool when I was on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I thought I had arrived,” Johnson said. “But to have a watch named after me, I mean I am obviously honored.” Ulysse Nardin is the most celebrated luxury watch brand in the world. It is the only one to have received more than 4,300 Awards, 18 Gold Medals, Registered in the Guinness Book of World Records, and received “Watch of The Year Award” in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004. “This is a record unsurpassed in the watch industry” said Ulysse Nardin CEO Patrik Hoffman. Could a disc injury be limiting your athletic performance?
pine injuries are common – more than 80 percent of us will experience back pain at some point in their life. Spinal injury can be accompanied by symptoms ranging from mild discomfort, to extreme pain and disability. Depending on your symptoms it is possible that injury to the intervertebral disc has occurred. The discs of the spinal column are embedded between the vertebrae and are often referred to as the spine’s shock absorbers. Each disc is a circular structure comprised of a tough fibrous outer membrane, and a jelly-like elastic core in the center. Problems can arise when the pressures inside the disc change, causing a “bulging” effect of the jelly-like core. A disc herniation occurs when the outer layer tears, resulting in infiltration of the jelly core into the spinal structures. Protecting the integrity of the spine should be the utmost concern. Regardless of the mechanism, it is imperative that you heed your body’s warning signs after a disc injury. These warning signs consist of but are not limited to, numbness and tingling into the extremities, sharp shooting pains, weakness, sensory loss, muscular spasm, burning sensations, sexual dysfunction, loss of bowel and bladder control, morning stiffness, and diminished reflexes. Symptoms may not be present, intermittent, or constant depending on the extent of the injury.

uring its 31 years the South Texas Junior Golf Classic has seen many amazing golfers and golf shots. The prestigious tournament, however, never had a hole-in-one. That’s until 14-year-old Cole Charvat sunk one with his 7-iron at this year’s event on the 144-yard No. 15 hole in the 14-15 year-old age group en route to a six-stroke victory at Harlingen Country Club. “I hit it and it was just a little to the right,” said Cole, who will be playing for the Harlingen Cardinals this school year. “It kicked off the slope and went nice and high and then disappeared into the pin. “When the other guy I was playing with took out his binoculars, he couldn’t see the ball. It was pretty awesome.” Tournament Director Durrell Lovell said the moment was a special one in the tournament’s history. “I’ve seen Cole play out there the past 2-3 years and I see his work
16 ethic and what he does. He comes out to practice and he’s not messing around,” Lovell said. “His approach to it is practice, practice, practice. It was a pleasure to see his work rewarded with a hole-in-one.” Cole’s been hitting some good shots for a few years, readily admitting that he’s got a lot of work to do on his long game and that his short game and his mental game are where his strengths are. That was obvious during the tournament where drives would veer off into trouble. During the first day of the two-day tournament Cole was looking to make the big shot. He came into the clubhouse with an 81 – even after his “Cole-in-one.” Day two, however, he had a different approach. “I would get into trouble, punch out – take my medicine – then hit it on the green, two putt, take my bogey and get out of there,” Cole said. “My mental game was better the second day. I was praying a lot more to God to stay in His presence.”

No money coming in means They live in McAllen, Texas. no food coming in either. I was also looking at a Christmas tree with nothing under it. Of course, this “need” didn’t compare to the no-food need. But for a child it’s hard to really tell the difference. The cold crept into the house as we kept the thermostat low as a cost-cutting measure. The snow tightly hugged the house as icicles from the roof reached deep into the snow. Those types of days just run into each other, the only difference being that every day seemed darker than the previous. Then things changed with just a simple knock at the back door. A more beautiful sound has rarely emanated. When my mom opened the door, people literally poured in, their hands and arms filled with food and presents. There were neighbors and my dad’s co-workers and many people from church. It was a party that has been etched in my memory beyond that of many others. The joy we felt that day – and through Christmas – is something I haven’t – and won’t - forget. That’s one reason I’m excited that the South Texas Golf Association and Love Thy Neighbor are partnering for a charity golf scramble to “play a round in their shoes” (SEE STORY INSIDE THIS EDITION) on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Monte Cristo Golf Course. The Love Thy Neighbor Service Organization, founded by Mike Robledo, has given more than 20,000 new pairs of shoes and socks to South Texas children in need since 2009. With these shoes, children can play sports or run around with their friends. They can find some comfort and safety. They can dream. A pair of shoes may not mean a lot to you and me. To a child, however, who can’t play on the school basketball team because the family doesn’t have the money, it means more than you or I could imagine. The tournament is just around the corner. If you would like to play, to donate, to sponsor or just get more information go to www.rgvshoes.com. We hope to see you at Monte Cristo on Sept. 7 “playing a round in their shoes.” We are extremely humbled and excited to be a part of this beautiful cause. We are thankful for the Love Thy Neighbor Service Organization and Mike Robledo and all those who volunteer to help children – to help them play, learn and dream. We want you to be a part of this golf scramble. More importantly, the children need you to be a part of it.

I asked them all to tell me what breast cancer means to them. Lynn Clark: “A survivor. Breast cancer is a life-changing event and a wake-up call. There are far worse things than breast cancer and no one wants to hear those words…”You have breast cancer.” With the research, the support of others and a positive attitude… life can go on.” Barbara Rawlings: “Breast cancer is a disease that can turn a woman’s world upside down. Self-examination and regular visits for a mammogram can help save your life.”

God and Golf Last issue we covered the first letter of our acronym GAME with Give Up On Gimmicks. Let’s move on to A-Aim for Consistency! Nothing helps our golf game like being consistent with the fundamentals (e.g. grip, alignment, posture, tempo). I’m sure we have all been paired up with those who really “look the part.” They have name brand clothes on $180.00, the latest driver - $399.00, and a new FJ Cabrera leather glove - $18.00... first tee shot, duck hooked OB.... - PRICELESS! Truth be known, we all struggle with inconsistency on and off the golf course because we try too hard to look perfect. A lot of times we can fool someone about our game by looking like someone we’re not. The problem
14 [Southtexas Golf #1]
is the more time we spend on trying to look good, the less time we spend on actually improving. The same is true in our spiritual life. Oswald Chambers says in his devotional, “Most of us are not consistent spiritually (internally), because we are too concerned about being consistent physically (externally).” The Bible is clear that consistency in our spiritual life doesn’t come from merely looking good. Matthew 6:1 (Message) says, “Be especially careful when you try to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater but the God who made you will not be applauding.” Another obstacle to achieving consistency is confusing it with perfection. The pursuit of perfection often impedes improvement. Being consistent on the golf course means
practicing fundamentals. In the Christian life it means thinking Godly thoughts, doing Godly things, holding Godly values, and seeking Godly perspective. Being perfect means making no mistakes. No one but Christ is capable of that. While we can’t achieve perfection, we can make progress. One of the most important measuring rods for progress is consistency. In His Grip, Phil

Playing his game Spreading HIS Word Not too far into a conversation one might start thinking that Brownsville Golf Center’s Jaime Rivera would be just as comfortable behind a pulpit as he is on a tee box or behind the pro shop counter. One would be right. By Henry Miller henry@stexasgolf.com A certain sense of peace radiates from Jaime Rivera. A trustworthy smile and the caring eyes of a servant sends the message that everything is going to be all right. Not too far into a conversation one might start thinking that Brownsville Golf Center’s Golf Director would be just as comfortable behind a pulpit as he is on a tee box or behind the pro shop counter. You’d be right. Rivera considers himself doubly blessed – during the day he runs the Brownsville Golf Center, at night you can often find the ordained minister at Livingway Family Church, teaching under the mentorship of Pastor Bill Moore. Ironically, it was at the golf center – then known as the Brownsville Country Club that golf and Christianity merged for Rivera. Pastor Moore came to Brownsville looking for a place to plant a new church. While searching for a prop-
erty the then Brownsville Country Club opened the banquet hall for services – with the 18th green as the pastor’s backdrop. Rivera would get up on Sunday’s and head to the club’s bar, which would open early for their regulars. “There were about seven of us they would open up the bar for – that’s how many frequent flier miles we had,” Rivera said. “The other guys were all older, retired and they pretty much got drunk every day. “I wasn’t a Christian and everything about God was foreign to me. One morning while they were having church service, I heard the conviction of the Holy Spirit.” That conviction was so strong that Rivera stepped out of the bar and into the church service. Extremely nervous – and embarrassed to join an altar call in front of employees, he nearly turned around and went back to his comfort zone in the bar. “Something happened to me right then. Pastor Moore was just abut to give an altar call saying how Jesus died for

our sins and you can accept him. I was gonna walk back out but heard that voice again ‘if you are ashamed of me before man I am going to be ashamed of you before my father and his angels in heaven.’ “I turned back thinking to myself ‘I’ll wait for more people wait to get up.’ Again I heard a voice tell me ‘if you just take one step I’ll take you the rest of the way.’ I took that first step and it felt like a hand went into my chest and took out a 32-pound brick. I wept all the way to the altar.” Something significant – life changing – had happened. He had no doubt about it. He could feel his burdens that he carried for so long had been lifted. But he didn’t really know what happened. He decided to pursue it. The result - he left golf for six years and pursued the ministry. He currently is an associate pastor as Livingway Family Church. “Some of my fellow members tell me that I’ve got the best of both worlds,” he said. “I get to golf by day and preach by night is the going joke. I got into ministry but God didn’t want me out of the golf business. I got back into it and am still passionate about all parts of it. If God doesn’t call me to a full-time position, there’s no other job I would want to do. Rivera was a late bloomer when it came to golf, not attaining the “golf bug”

until he was 31 and in the Navy when some Navy friends took him golfing at a beautiful course in Canada. It didn’t take long for him to catch that bug. After 10 years in the Navy, Rivera – married to Berta and with a son – started working for the Texas Department of Human Services. Like the typical person he would play as much as he could. But the obsession grew so much that he quit his job and took up a position at Brownsville Country Club – as a volunteer marshall. “I golfed as much as I could. I would practice at night in my back yard. I’d get up at 2 in the morning and go in the back yard just swinging. I ate and slept golf,” he said. “I was the worse golfer scorewise I think I ever knew. When I stared I would shoot 135-140s. I worked for a good boss who took me under his wing and I went from a 28 handicap to about a 2 in six months – but it took a lot of work. I probably hit about 300 balls a day and played two rounds a day.” His oldest son Eric, 29, now works down the road from dad at Valley International Country Club with course pro Derrick Dixon. “We had Eric when I went into the Navy. My wife said we’re not gonna have any more kids until I got out. I was planning on just doing a three-year tour and ended up doing 10 years,” Rivera said.
18 [Southtexas Golf #1]
“It was hard on her and it was either get out and stay married or not be married and stay in the Navy. So I got out. “Eric grew up on the golf course and played in high school,” said Rivera, who also has another son, Jason, 20, and a daughter Meagan, 18. “He was such a perfectionist that he wanted to do every shot right so when a bad shot came, he was gone – he’d just crash. He’s learned though and he is a solid player and his mental game is really there.” Meagan, the youngest, just graduated, so it won’t be long before the Rivera home becomes an empty nest. “She’s daddy’s little princess and for the past eight years that has been a haunting thought that won’t go away,” said Rivera, who’s been married to Berta for 30 years. “The first time we took her to San Antonio she said that was where she was going to live and has said that for the past eight years. My friends who had kids that leave say it’s gonna hit you like a train.” Rivera grew up in a large family and recalls moving out of his house, renting an apartment and working full time while still a high school senior. “I told my dad there are too many of us. We are too big and I shared a bedroom with four brothers. I told him I thought I could make it on my own,” Rivera said. “He laughed and said OK, but remember you can come back if you don’t make it. So my kids have grown up hearing those stories of how I was so independent at a young age.” That independence has now come back full circle as Rivera watches his children grow up and start their careers,
the youngest determined to become a registered nurse. But despite his independent nature, Rivera is quick to admit that family becomes a large part of life as one gets older. “I told my dad when I went into the Navy that I’ll be back for Christmas,” he said. “You start doing your career thing but then family becomes more and more important. To keep my family together I had to quit the military and it’s the best thing I could’ve done. My life would have gone in a whole different direction. Rivera has worked since he was 5 with his family as summer migrant farmworkers. They would travel to Arizona, New Mexico, California and even to Washington, picking cotton, watermelons, strawberries and anything else that would bring in a paycheck. “I always said my kids will never have to do this,” Rivera said. “I wish I would’ve instilled it more in them and maybe bring them out there for a summer or two. All I can be is supportive and give them good advice and bring them up well and smart.” No matter what adversity comes his way Rivera holds the promise of Philippians 4:13 - “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” “That verse has been something to hold onto – whenever things have looked the hardest, I never lost hope. We are not alone - we do have someone on our side to help us and we can get through any adversity that comes our way and not lose our peace and our joy – it’s what holds me. “God is with us. There’s nothing to fear.”

AFTER 31 YEARS, THE SOUTH TEXAS JUNIOR GOLF CLASSIC NOTCHES ITS FIRST...
COLE-IN-ONE By Henry Miller

uring its 31 years the South Texas Junior Golf Classic has seen many amazing golfers and golf shots. “I’ve seen Cole play out there the past 2-3 years and I see his work
ethic and what he does.
›› End result – he shaved six strokes off his first day and shot a 75. Even though he’s on the early end of those teen years, his golf mannerisms and mentality are years ahead. But, he’s still a teen and he quickly points out that having his dad around is a calming influence when his focus isn’t quite where it should be – or if frustration sets in. “He’s a real competitor,” said his dad, Cary, “I do the same things with him that my dad did with me – taking me out at a real young age like 3 or 4. I’ve always enjoyed golf but I was never as disciplined or as detailed as he is. He is very systematic when he does things – his mother is very organized and he gets it from there.” One of Cole’s next major goals is to break 70. He shot a 71 once – after being so frustrated with his performance walking his first 18 that he walked 18 more.
“I choked those first 18 holes,” Cole said. “I got frustrated and wanted to walk another 18. Dad got to the course and was looking for me. ‘Where are you,’ he asked me on the phone. I told him to let me finish the last hole – I birdied it and finished 1-under with a 71.” “He would stay out here from sun up to sundown if I let him with a cot in the barn where they store the carts,” said his dad, who was is originally from Tulsa, Okla.. “If he keeps it up, the sky’s the limit. I hope he stays with it and if he does it would be great to get a scholarship, as long as he’s enjoying it.” And if he does land a scholarship, where would he love to take his talents to? “Boomer Sooner,” he said proudly. “We are OU fans.”
Cole became the first golfer in the 31-year history of the South Texas Junior Golf Classic to register a hole-in-one and did so en route to a six-stroke victory.

Love Thy Neighbor is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that specializes at helping children and families in need throughout the South Texas Community. We serve the poorest of the poor, extremely low-income and colonia children identified by schools, Boys and Girls Club directors, and community center workers as being most in need of assistance with new shoes, back-

The first “Love Thy Neighbor” shoe drive, held over two weeks in December 2009, garnered an overwhelming response. To date, the organization has distributed more than 20,000 pairs of new shoes and socks to children in South Texas. Love Thy Neighbor experienced an outpouring of support for this cause, and developed strong partnerships with various nonprofit organizations, federal, state and local government agencies, businesses, and individuals who were all inspired to participate. The project evolved into providing school supplies, free health services, immunizations and even eyeglasses for needy children and families across
Love Thy Neighbor Service Organization (LTN) was created in 2009 by Mike Robledo to provide and promote service opportunities for people to have compassion for and a desire to help their neighbor in need. In 2009, Mike had a spark of inspiration in his heart, which significantly altered his perspective on life, meaning, and purpose. This shift led him to have a deep and personal understanding and realization about his own life and how life really works. With this understanding came a profound sense of self-awareness, peace, power and control over all aspects of his life, encompassing the areas of health, wellness, career, education, family, spirituality, prosperity, and success. This realization led Mike to have unconditional compassion for their fellow man and a strong desire to help those in need, thus Love Thy Neighbor was born. He immediately saw an

South Texas. Love Thy Neighbor developed strong partnerships with other local nonprofit organizations that are completely aligned with Love Thy Neighbor’s mission of helping others in need. Love Thy Neighbor also discovered that there are many individuals whose lives were touched by witnessing the outpouring of love for others through Love Thy Neighbor’s activities. People are definitely interested in and seeking ways to “love thy neighbor,” but do not necessarily know how to be of service. There also lacks a sustainable element in service; once a service project is finished, there is seldom further follow-up. Love Thy Neighbor discovered that there is a need to connect and coordinate local efforts to more effectively enhance service delivery to help those most in need by instilling a culture of service in individuals through personal self-empowerment, as well as an opportunity to connect service organizations with volunteers who desire to

Feature name help. After a year of this type of direct service activity, the organization has seen an opportunity to further develop itself not only through direct service as a charitable organization, but also as a direct catalyst for profound systemic change in communities by impacting individual lives. As its name suggests, Love Thy Neighbor is a simple concept that has universal application. Evidenced by their personal experience, the founders of Love Thy Neighbor recognize that in order to love one’s neighbor, one must first be able to love themselves. Love Thy Neighbor seeks to expand its services and become a mechanism to help individuals become empowered
with the tools to raise themselves out of negative life situations – poverty, illness, financial distress, etc. Achieving this success on an individual level will lead to individuals to seek within their hearts to determine their purpose or calling and inspire them to serve humanity in a manner that best suits them and their individual talents, time, and skills. Love Thy Neighbor has the potential and commitment to have a more substantial impact in the region by expanding its services to establish a program that would include personal and individual life coaching to further promote the ideals of loving and serving humanity by first loving oneself.

A new day at...
Tierra del Sol The sun will soon rise on a brand new Tierra del Sol. The Pharr municipal golf course has been undergoing major renovations $1 million worth of renovations – and should be ready to unveil its masterpiece with a Grand Opening celebration on October 5. “Our course has always been a good golf course but has never been able to compete in the top five,” said Raul Garza, Director of the Tierra del Sol Golf Club. “Part of our goal is to make this the best municipal golf course in the Rio Grande Valley. To do that we had to make some major improvements. The course accepted a low bid from a small company out of North Carolina. Garza said he was skeptical at first, mainly because of the size of the company, but it didn’t take long to realize they had a winning combination. “We started working with them and it was obvious they knew exactly what they were doing,” Garza said. “They are incredibly detail-oriented and they have gone above and beyond on specific holes to improve the quality of the our golf course. “This is a championship cause to improve this golf course – and we are doing it in leaps and bounds.” Following is a glance at some of the improvements so far at Tierra del Sol: DRAINAGE “We established brand new drainage.

This is crucial for the golf course for our customers.” TEE BOXES “We examined the tee boxes and completely stripped them down and laser leveled them. Then we added 3-4 inches of sand and sprigged them with celebration grass. That grass is a little coarser and responds well to tee boxes and recovers faster. Some of the tee boxes are elevated up to 4-6 inches to give it a more professional look. Some of them are two-tiered and we are really excited about that.” NO. 15 “The ladies tee box on No. 15 is on a peninsula and the peninsula was eroding and getting smaller and smaller. We’ve put a retaining wall around it and now it’s first class. It looks beautiful.” No. 6 “No. 6 is a par-3 over water. We are working on putting a retaining wall at the front of the green to give it a nice aesthetic look and really enhance that hole. We also expanded that tee box to give it its actual yardage, it was short some yards. We moved it back about another 10-15 yards to play 170-180. Into the South Texas wind, though, it will play over 200 yards.” GREENS “Completely removed the surface and

Added a chipping green, with bunkers. Expanded the driving range. Added a nursery for what greens need. Added sprinkler in dry spot areas. Removed trees to enhance the course view. Covered 90 percent of bare spots as of Aug. 15. “There has been a lot of labor-intensive work done here,” Garza said. Our goal is to provide the best product we can provide. All the courses have different styles and different nuances. We will also bring a different element. The product we are going to bring will be top notch. “We want people to leave Tierra del Sol and say ‘You know what? I liked playing that course.’”

She was one of the most determined players I’ve had in my four years and she got better every day.” Lauren said she was extremely nervous when it came to joining the team 30 [Southtexas Golf #1]

Make no mistake about it, Stuart Place Country Club is...
OPEN FOR BUSINESS In the early Spring of 2013 a group of investors realized they were literally living on a diamond in the rough. They believed that by pooling their resources and visions they could do what most investors would run away from - buy and revitalize a golf course. After forming the Harlingen Golf Guys, LLC, Stuart Place Golf Course was purchased. The real work began to start polishing our little gym. After a lot of sweat and equipment break-downs, we have seen the results of our labor. The results have been the return of Stuart Place to its original beauty!! In 1985, the developer looked at an overgrown piece of property and envisioned a par-30, 9-hole course. There are nine lakes on the original layout, seven of which come into play. After several changes in ownership, an additional 15 acres were added to the course. The course is now a respectful par-36 and has two par-5’s that can challenge even the most accomplished “duffer.” Let’s not forget the two par-3’s, our signature hole No. 9; only 135 yards that plays directly into the South Texas wind, and hole No. 5 is a long stretch at 235 yards. With reasonable pricing and carts available, Stuart Place is sure to expand your valley golfing experience and enjoyment. Stuart Place is located a mile north of Expressway 83 off of the Stuart Place Road exit in beautiful Harlingen, Texas, making it an easy central location for all. So if you love golf and don’t have time for 18 holes - do as the USGA says…”Half a round ain’t half bad.” It allows you to enjoy the other amenities the RGV has to offer.
Stuart Place Country Club is located at 155 Highland Drive,Harlingen, TX, 78522. Visit their website at www.stuartplacegolf.com

FOR THE KIDS
for a moment. Was I the one who did that? Was I the one who helped that kid lace “em” up. Was I the one who “Loved Thy Neighbor”? FORE!
As we watch our kids grow before our eyes and realize time stands still for nobody and our golf game suffers uncontrollably, we realize how fortunate we truly are. Often we take for granted the next meal we have, the next golf match we play, the next game we see our kids play in. As we watch our kids lace up those sneakers and burst onto the playing field full of vigor, we fail to realize that there are many kids who don’t lace “em” up because they simply don’t have “em” to lace up. That’s where “Love Thy Neighbor” comes in. A charity organization that provides shoes and socks to the less fortunate. Mike Robledo, director for the charity organization has donated more than 20,000 shoes and socks to these children. South Texas Golf realizes the importance of Mike’s venture. His caring demeanor is displayed every time you bring “Love Thy Neighbor” to the table. South Texas Golf Association and “Love Thy Neighbor” have teamed up to bring the Rio Grande Valley the first charity golf tournament that you can actually…”Play a Round in Their Shoes.” The Charity event will be played Saturday, Sept. 7 at Monte Cristo Golf Club. On Friday night there is a dinner and silent auction of wonderful items. Come be a part of history as we step from our shoes into their shoes. So the next time we see some kids lace “em” up, just think

Non Surgical Spinal
Decompression Could a disc injury be limiting your athletic performance?
By Dr. Kurt Martin D.C.
S
pine injuries are common – more than 80 percent of us will experience back pain at some point in their life.

LEISURE: FeatureBEER name
A Taste For The Times Harvest Pumpkin Ale brings back that once in a “Blue Moon” flavor
I
n 1995, we crafted our first autumn seasonal— Pumpkin Ale.
Appearance: Deep amber-colored ale with brilliant clarity and a rich, white head. Mouthfeel: A medium-bodied ale with just enough carbonation to balance the rich caramel character.
WHAT TO EAT WITH IT? The flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and the other harvest spices pair well with beef dishes and seasonal soups
58 [Southtexas Golf #1]
Finish: Finishes with a smooth, clean malt and spice taste. Hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and malt gradually fade.

Is a rollover right for you? If you’re not exactly happy with your current plan -and weren’t crazy about your old plan -- you can always roll over your old plan assets into an IRA.
I
f you’ve recently changed jobs -- or maybe changed jobs a few times over the years -- you may be juggling multiple retirement plan accounts. While it’s certainly acceptable to leave your money in your former employer’s plan (as long as your balance is over $5,000, your old employer can’t cash you out), in many instances it might be a better idea to consolidate your assets. Consolidation can help make administering and allocating your assets much simpler. Having your entire retirement portfolio summarized on one statement makes it easier to track performance and make changes. But before you initiate a rollover, be sure to compare the investment options and their associated fees in your old plan with those in your new plan. Were you able to properly diversify your assets in your old plan? If your investment choices were limited, you probably want to move your old account into your new account. Are the investment fees higher or lower than those in your current plan? If you were paying more at your old plan, it’s a good reason to move your assets to a plan with lower investment fees. Are you satisfied with the investment choices and fees charged in your current plan? If you’re not happy with your current plan -- and weren’t crazy about your old plan -- you can always roll over your old plan assets into an IRA. Initiating a roll over isn’t difficult. First, check your current plan rules to confirm that rollovers are permissible (the vast majority of plans accommodate this feature). Then contact the administrator of your old plan (you can find their information on your quarterly statement) to get the ball rolling. Some

retirement account to another without incurring any tax consequences. A “qualified” account can be either your new employer’s plan or a rollover IRA. A distribution is essentially a withdrawal from your account. If you request a distribution, the account administrator is required by law to withhold 20% of your account balance to pay federal taxes. State taxes, if applicable, are also due. If you are under age 59 1/2, you will probably be hit with an additional 10% federal early withdrawal penalty. If you have specific questions about your retirement plan distribution options, contact your employer’s benefits coordinator or a qualified financial consultant.
