What is the “Get Paid to Rope” Promotion, and how does it work? The “Get Paid to Rope” Promotion is available to anyone who shops with South Texas Tack. Plus, now through August 31, 2018, Receive twice the gift cards with our Double Down offer! Lastly, any order with 3 or more ropes will receive free shipping on all regular size items.
How often does South Texas Tack receive ropes? South Texas Tack receives ropes daily. All of the major rope manufacturers are located here in Texas allowing for next-day shipments to arrive to our warehouse on a daily basis. Upon arrival ropes are rotated on our racks to keep ropes from sitting too long.
When I buy from Let’s Rope how old is my rope? Is there such thing as too fresh of a rope? Once a rope is coiled for the first time by the manufacturer, it needs to sit in the twist-ties for at least 3-4 days. This allows the rope to “cure” and retain the “memory” that was put into the rope when it was coiled. Most ropes are anywhere from 4-7 days old when they arrive to our warehouse and no more than 30 days old when they leave our warehouse, an optimal time to take the twist-ties off and start putting your new rope to work.
When will my order ship? All orders placed at www.southtexastack.com before 2:00 pm CST ship the same day. (Excluding Saturday, Sunday, and major holidays.) This means if you place your order before 2:00 pm, one of our team members will pull and ship your order that very same day! TWO
SouthTexasTack.com
What might delay my order? One of our top priorities at Let’s Rope a STT Company is consumer security and protection. We value our customers and are consistently adding more layers of protection for fraud. If your order falls into one of these categories, your order could possibly be delayed 1-2 business days. a) If your billing and shipping address do not match. b) If your shipping address is in a known hotspot for fraudulent orders. c) If the shipping address is modified after the order is placed.
What if the item I ordered is out of stock? On www.southtexastack.com if the item is out of stock, an arrival date will appear under the quantity box. If you order more than what is in stock, you will receive an email within 24 business hours notifying of the back order. We expect all items to be arrive shortly and will ship them as soon as they do with complimentary free shipping for regular sized items. You will also receive an email updating you biweekly with the status of your backorder. We try very hard to keep our inventory as accurate as possible, but sometimes there are discrepancies.

It’s old news to say that Cactus Ropes is well-respected in the roping industry, and the official rope of the PRCA. But there’s breaking news too—their newest innovation, called CoreTX (pronounced Core Tex). According to Cactus, “CoreTX does a couple things to an already great feeling Cactus rope. First, the roper will feel more tip weight, even in a smaller diameter rope. This is due to the added weight of the core strand. The roper will also notice an extreme increase in longevity. This is due to a decrease in stretch from run to run, plus the four strands are now twisted around a ‘foundation’ which adds much more durability and life to the outside strands.” Also, the outer strands are not dyed, so CoreTX ropes get their color from their cores. The bright green Swagger is favored by 23-time world champion Trevor Brazile, while the orange Thrilla is the choice of top pros Riley Minor, Jake Long, Chad Masters and Logan Medlin. The Swagger has a lot of tip weight and is easy to swing with a very smooth feel. The Thrilla is smaller and quicker, but still has tip weight and is perfect for those that like the feel of less rope. Barry Berg, General Manager of Cactus Ropes, remembers that Cactus had their breakthrough year circa 2009, when FOUR
™
they introduced the Xplosion and signed Trevor Brazile. Since then, they have remained a major player in the industry. “We have people that rope here at Cactus, we keep steers year-round, and we go out and test ropes. While developing the CoreTX, believe me we learned a lot about rope making, including our old style of doing it,” Berg said. “We wanted to narrow down what was changing in the ropes— was it the core, the outside, the stretch—so we decided on some constants, then brought in guys like Trevor Brazile to test for us. Trevor and Relentless chose the Swagger and its diameter and weight, and we were happy with that. It has been a good, good process,” he said. Brazile agreed and said that process was a lengthy one with several prototypes. “Every time we made an adjustment on the Swagger, I tested it,” he said. “The best thing was, right off the bat, this was a good rope and has just evolved to get better and better. The CoreTX rope has been a winner from the start,” he continued. “It’s all about Cactus striving to make a better rope, every day, and they really listen to what the roper wants.”

New Core Rope Strikes the Industry By Doreen Shumpert
In a competitive industry, it’s important to stay cutting-edge, and Fast Back Ropes has done just that with their new core ropes, the Venom and the Centerfire 2. But what is all this buzz about core ropes, anyway? We didn’t have them until recently, so what is their advantage? And what is so special about the Venom? South Texas Tack asked nine-time Wrangler National Finals-qualifying heeler, Cesar de la Cruz, about core rope technology and the Venom; he was instrumental in testing for Fastback. Here’s what he shared. Explain a little bit about these new core ropes. What is the difference or advantage? Ropes with cores are a lot tougher and last a lot longer. When it comes to feel, they feel the same from new to 20 or 30 runs later, and that’s way longer than other ropes I have used. People spend around $40.00 for a rope and may get five or six runs before it feels different. That’s where you get an unsatisfied customer. But this weekend I roped at the Windy Ryon Memorial, it was near 100 degrees, the steers were big, and my ropes lasted really well. The core is what keeps the rope coming back to its original position. I give ropes a big stretch every time, and these ropes are tough! I think the core, for heelers, is almost a necessity now. In a rope with no core, I use a medium hard. But with these core ropes, I’ll use a medium soft at a jackpot (maybe a medium hard at a rodeo). Those medium softs are easier to swing all day, and still have body and weight. That alone has been a major difference for me. Tell us a little bit about the Fast Back Venom rope? What are your favorite features? The Venom is awesome. I love the way it feels, it has a lot of balance, it is very light but still has a lot of tip weight. I need a light, fast rope because my hand is smaller, and it is ideal for my style. I also like the bright green color. I am very visual when I rope. When I deliver I like to see the legs jump in my rope before I go for my slack, so this is a complete rope for my style. I told SIX
Fast Back what I was looking for, and they did a great job of fitting a rope to me. What role did you play in research and development? I rope so many steers; in the Photo Courtsey of Rodeo News winter I rope 100 a day or so. I’m breaking in the World Series Finals steers for Las Vegas, 1000 head. I got to test the Venom for toughness and longevity, and I helped pick the color. I tested it non-stop, different diameters and such. The Venom does not break down, and the loop stays full and fast. You can use it until the coils aren’t good any more. The Centerfire 2 is a great rope as well, for those who like a heavier rope with more body. Hats off to Fast Back, because they covered all aspects of what ropers need in these two ropes. Who would you recommend the Venom rope to? I recommend it for women, younger kids, and all the way to the older gentlemen who may have trouble swinging a rope and getting the speed going. I cut my thumb off when I was 12, and this rope is real light and easy to swing and I feel like it works great for people with smaller hands. I think this rope will be very popular on the professional level as well because it is fast; when you throw it down there it comes back. I just can’t say enough good about the Venom. Rope Handling 101 World Champion Calf Roper: Shane Hanchey as told to Logan Ward
Whether I’m roping for practice or money, whether I’m at the NFR or a backyard jackpot, my number one focus when I back in the box is rope handling. Before I get off and flank and tie, I have to rope the calf around the neck. I learned to rope from my older brother, Jason. One thing Jason instilled in me from when I was a little kid was to play other sports. Throw a football. Throw a baseball. Shoot a basketball. In all of those cases, your goal is to deliver the ball. And you do that by learning how to grip, release and follow-through. The same is true with roping.
The Grip I want just the right amount of spoke—the distance between the rope’s eye (aka, hondo) and where I grip the rope with my right hand. The farther your hand is from the eye, the more range you have, but the less control you have over the loop. Find your balance between range and control and stick with it every time you rope.
The Release My brother always taught me to release the loop as I swing it over my left shoulder. That positions the tip down and in front of my face and creates a highpercentage catch loop. LetsRope.com
The Follow-Through After I release, my arm and hand continue in a fluid movement in the direction of the target. It’s just like throwing a football. If I start with the right grip, release over my left shoulder and follow-through, ninety-nine times out of a hundred, that loop will go around the calves’ necks. The one time I miss is when the calf stumbles or darts to the left after I’ve already released. That’s just bad luck. ey’s nch a H k ic ane Sh Top P Willard 4 Strand Poly Calf Rope WR-4POLY $43.00

Equibrand’s Classic Equine Protective Boots:
Commitment to Quality By Doreen Shumpert
Competitive horsemen know the potential for dramatic injuries to the horse’s lower limbs. Protective horse boots are essential aids helping prevent career ending injuries to the equine athlete. Protective boots help keep our horses sound, but by the nature of their job, they do not last forever. They get ripped, torn, beat up, and worn out over time. But, they are also considered cheap insurance. As Tegan Still, from Equibrand’s Research and Development department reminds us—that hole in the boot just saved a hole in your horse’s leg! South Texas Tack visited with Still about Classic Equine’s testing process, how they address longterm quality, and what makes Equibrand/Classic Equine unique in the market.
How does Classic Equine approach research and development? We are always looking for ways to improve our products. We work with vendors to employ new technology with textiles, polymers, foams, and other materials to improve performance, fit, support, and extend the life of the product. We also look at how well it protects the horse. For a long time, I cared for some of the greatest horses in the cutting horse industry. I have put a lot of boots on and off of horses, and I learned what worked—or didn’t. Even before joining Classic Equine’s product development team, I helped the company test and fit new products. The company’s philosophy is that everything can be done better. We are never satisfied with status quo and we continually work to develop new designs and improve existing products. Our Legacy [boot line] is a great example. This year, we introduced the Legacy2 with a number of new features that make the boot better than ever before. For example, we put elastic on the bottom two straps, to improve fit and longevity. The new elastic adds length through extra stretch and allows the boot to fit even better. We also extended the Kevlar all the way to the base of the boot. I knew from experience that we could get holes below the Kevlar, so we extended it. We continually document product performance and work to improve the life of our products. We added the ClassicFit line a couple of years ago, to fill a void we saw in the leg boot category. We wanted a support boot that offered a lot more protection, like a splint boot. Classic Equine continually looks for ways to fill a void in the market or improve our products. If it doesn’t work for the horse, it doesn’t work for us!
How are the boots tested, and what do you feel sets Classic Equine apart in a competitive industry? Product development and testing is a full time enterprise at Classic Equine. We are constantly out in the field working with our research team to identify needed product changes, track product performance, and test new materials and designs. Our products go through multiple tests. I’m a stickler about that process; I evaluate the boots as long as necessary to ensure that we don’t put something on the market that isn’t successful. I work closely with our top riders and testers that use the products every day. They torture the product and I monitor the performance during the process. When we are finally satisfied, the product is moved into the system. It can be two years of work that goes into improvements and design. It does not happen overnight; the final product comes after many prototypes. As for what sets Classic Equine apart, we are innovators in design and we are sticklers for quality. Less expensive materials are available in abundance, but we do not make substitutions for the sake of lowering cost. Therefore, our boots last. The horse’s wellbeing is our number one priority. We don’t jeopardize the quality EIGHTEEN

Building Boots By Abigail Boatwright

Trainor Evans was a sixth-generation cattleman; today he has been one of the owners of high-end Rios of Mercedes Boots since 1973. In 1988 Rios saw a need for a quality boot with the features of a Rios boot—at a lower price point. So, the company decided to create Anderson Bean—the maiden name of Trainor’s mother and his grandmother. “I have to say that of all the things I’ve done in my life, being able to take the Evans’ women’s family names and make them notable because of this excellent boot is something I won’t forget,” Evans said. “I think, if they were still with us, they would be proud of Anderson Bean’s reputation.” Making a less expensive boot doesn’t mean cutting corners at Anderson Bean. At headquarters in Mercedes, Texas, Anderson Bean boots are built by cutting the leather “on stretch” that means making sure a vamp or a top shaft expands in the right directions, so the footwear will not lose its fit as the boots break in. The vamps and shafts are paired with cream cowhide lining, sewn together with piping, side welt and bright decorative stitching. Anderson Bean has numerous lasts to fit every toe shape, size and width offered by the company. The upper is dampened, pulled over the last by hand, and attached to the leather insole. The welt is sewn on, a steel shank is added, then the leather sole is glued and stitched to the welt and insole, then pegged with wooden pegs. The maker adds a heel, and then the heel and sole are sanded and burnished. “We have figured out how to make a boot that is about the same price as most medium-priced boots, but it is made in ways that you would use to make high-quality, bench made boots,” Evans said.

In the mid-90’s, deep in the era of cowboys wearing formfitting jeans, Michael Dvorak, the late Shawn Patrick and Brenda VanNewkirk noticed something interesting about younger team ropers. They were mavericks, wearing brands like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Lucky, rather than cowboy brands. These industry disruptors decided to ask why.
By Abigail Boatwright
Cinch traveled across the country to work with trend-setting team ropers to develop its products. Calf roper Fred Whitfield was one of the first to endorse the brand.
“We believed there was a need for a new brand, a brand made for team ropers,” Gechter said. “At the time, no one in the western industry was doing anything like it.
