Joe, you do the all-around commentary for ten whole days; do you ever get tired of non-stop talking and analyzing? I’m sure sometimes you would like to just enjoy yourself and watch the rodeo. Well, I’ve never sat and watched it. I’ve either been roping or commentating there for 30 years now. So, you get used to it and you just roll with the flow. The part that never gets old is that there’s no telling what’s going to happen in the events, and you really have to just wait and find out. Because it always, ALWAYS, plays out different than you had planned. Do you have any traditions in Vegas? What’s the one thing you have to do every time you go? Get paid somehow hahaha!! No, I’ve been there so many times that there’s only one thing I can say that I’ve done every year. When I was really young and I went out there the first time, I had a friend take me to a place called the Golden Steer. And back then in 1985, it was a big deal, and big stars showed up there all the time. It’s a really old-fashioned steak house with the leather seats and the leather booths. And we’ve been there every year since then. They’ve got the signed pictures up on the wall of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. It’s kind of like a piece of Old Vegas, it’s a cool cool place. Who have you seen out there this year that really stands out to you? What can we look forward to in 2019? This is a brand-new year, and a lot of these rookies have an outstanding amount of talent. There are about 4 or 5 guys out there that I think are just cracking out. I think the guys like Ty Harris and Cooper Matthew, they’re all guys that have big chances coming up. And we don’t really know who LetsRope.com
is truly going to make it until they get into the mix because man it is a different world out there when they’re trying to make it their livelihood. To narrow it down to one isn’t possible without seeing them prove themselves consistently. I think the really interesting thing to watch will be who is going to try and take Trevor’s place. He’s had no competition for the all-around for so long, and now the crown is there for the taking. What sets the NFR apart from other rodeos? I think what people need to realize about the NFR is that it is the best rodeo in the world, and the most challenging rodeo in the world. It’s every night for ten nights, not just a one-time deal. It’s not just about who had the best run that day, it’s a marathon. It’s the guys and girls that learn to win consistently, night after night and overcome the fatigue and nerves all week. I think that’s what makes the NFR unique, and it will never be replicated anywhere else. I think those one-day rodeos are great, but what separates the NFR is that it’s not a battle, it’s a war. Who Says a Core is Just for Team Ropes? Introducing

What inspired the integration of CoreTX into your Calf and Ranch Ropes? I’ll start with the calf rope. The reason the manufactured rope hasn’t taken over the industry vs the grass is one millimeter of stretch and separation of the crowns. This happens because of the hollowness of the manufactured calf rope. We put the core in, there’s no more hollowness, and there’s no more stretch. We’ve made 100,000 core ropes, and what we’ve learned with these 100,000 is all about stretch, and how we have to manage it. When you think about the stretch in the Hooey, it’s no longer there. We wanted a core ranch rope because of the durability. We called into California, and we called our 4 or 5 favorite rancheros, and we told them we needed to develop a rope with them that’s the best ranch rope that’s ever been made. And that’s what the El Caporal is. Ranch cowboys in California used these ropes for one year, and gave us feedback until we came up with this design. Rodey Wilson is from Texas, and he won’t heel with anything but the El Caporal. 38 feet long, the balance is perfect, and the tip is so identifiable, that you are going to see as many competitive heelers use this as ranch cowboys.

We know that the Hooey was already a prominent rope in your line before the introduction of CoreTX technology, but where did the name El Caporal come from? The first guy I called in California is Franky Martinez. He’s an artist, he’s a musician, and he’s a hell of a cowboy. I said what I want is a Mexican name that represents all the cowboys in California. A Caporal is a man that oversees livestock. So, he basically brought that to us, and we went with it! What can we expect from the new Hooey with the core when compared to the older version? The swing will be the same, but it’ll bring tip weight up. The core is in there to take that last millimeter of stretch out so you can trust it on the horse. It’s about the horse when it comes to stretch. What advantages does this give a calf roper in the arena? When the loop is around the neck and you have completed the catch, at that point, you can put the calf exactly where you want with your slack. Now if there’s stretch the horse gets two hits instead of one, and it basically will make your horse quit working, because they never know when that second hit is going to come. Everyone knows the story of Secretariat, one of the greatest racehorses of all time. Everyone also knows how to pronounce Secretariat’s name. Now, look at the end of his name—“Ariat”. Like Secretariat, Ariat as a brand has been strides ahead of competitors in design and technology since the company’s inception in 1993. While constantly creating the most advanced boots, apparel, and denim every season in the industry, the brand completely reinvented men’s performance apparel when they joined forces with 24-Time World Champion, Trevor Brazile, in 2017 with the Relentless line. Designers at the Ariat Biomechanics Lab attached cameras and sensors to Trevor’s body, analyzed the results, and created samples of boots and apparel based on test results of Trevor’s movements. Then, Trevor himself put these samples to the absolute test to ensure durability, quality, and practicality. Relentless Wrinkle-Resistant Shirts feature four times the arm mobility of a traditional shirt and offer cool climate insulation while maintaining the appearance of a professional, button-down shirt. Relentless Stretch Denim is an enhanced fabric twice as strong as comparable cotton denim and features no-chafe inseams. The strength and stretch allow for easy movement on and off the saddle and minimizes the risk of tearing. Relentless DualPro Boots sustain a shock absorbency equivalent to an athletic shoe, have traction zones on the outsole to allow quick release from the stirrup, and come in a variety of styles, including exotics.
A Let’s Rope team member had the chance to visit with Trevor about his line so far and what we can expect from Relentless in 2019. Trevor: There’s a lot of technology brands, and there are cowboy brands. Ariat is the best of both worlds. That’s why it is the perfect partnership with Relentless. They take the same technology that’s out there in other sports and bring it to the western world. They test it and know it will perform in our industry. When Relentless products were being developed in the Ariat Biomechanics Lab, you were literally the test subject; sensors and cameras were applied to your body to capture your every move. What was the developmental experience like to see the test results analyzed and transformed into high-tech performance apparel? Trevor: Well, you have to understand that I came from dealing with a lot of companies in the industry, and I could not believe the attention to detail when it came to the research and development of these products. That is what impressed me the most—their willingness to go the extra mile to make sure that they could make riders and ropers better athletes. They don’t just put a technology out. They put a technology out that they know works for what we do. This gear lasts. The design, quality and durability are put to the test by you personally! What is the most impressive feat a Relentless style has survived? Trevor: That’s a good one! There is a lot of stretch in the market. The stretch in our Relentless denim was tested in Texas at places that know how to heavy-starch jeans. That was one of the things we knew was important to cowboys, and we weren’t going to put out a stretch that would break down in those conditions. As far as the boots go, the reason that I stayed with the soles I use in the DualPro soles--we did the testing, and I have the results of the foot pressure placement technology to track where we needed grip. I tested the DualPro soles in the wash racks, in the arena…and they didn’t let sand in. [Ariat] was always famous for their rubber-soled boots, but I was big fan of leather outsoles. For them to have a hybrid sole for me to use when I was tying down in and out of THIRTY
the saddle, or whatever it is people in the western industry do every day, that product impressed me the way it stood up. I took that same pair of boots back to [Ariat] 12 months later at the NFR and said, ‘This is the boot that I want to have.’ What new additions can we anticipate with Ariat’s continued partnership for 2019? Trevor: All of our new shirts will offer some stretch, but one thing I am really excited about is the outwear piece from the quarter-zip pullovers to the jackets to vests; they have been so much fun to work on. [Outerwear] is one of Ariat’s strongest suites; that has been one of the coolest pieces of the Relentless Ariat relationship is working on some of the outerwear.
