ADDRESSING ARTHRITIS

If you’ve got a rope horse, he’ll eventually experience lameness resulting from arthritis. Dr. Kurt Heite talks treatment to keep your horse sound. By Abigail Boatwright Rope horses are incredible athletes. Although a typical roping run is just seconds long, the repetitive nature of the performance lends itself to eventual injuries. Dr. Kurt Heite DVM at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital says the most common soundness issue in rope horses is arthritis. But this condition doesn’t have to be a career ender. With proper care, your rope horse can continue his work for years to come.

Why arthritis? Arthritis in rope horses is most commonly associated with the hock joints, says Heite. He says the short burst of athleticism performed over and over causes problems similar to what tennis players, golf players and weightlifters experience. Arthritis in the hocks is common in cutters and reiners, too, says Heite. “Just like tennis players—if you play enough tennis, you get tennis elbow,” Heite said. “So if you’re doing the same thing, repetitively, that much and that long, and you’re good at your job, it’s going to happen. It’s a normal abnormality.”

Looking for signs Heite says there’s really no way to prevent the development of arthritis—they’re simply due to wear and tear, like any sport. But he says the biggest problem is the horse’s handler’s not recognizing the first symptoms. Lameness is usually not the very first sign. “The first symptoms of soreness or lameness are going to be as simple a sore backs,” Heite said. I’m talking about a horse not scoring as well as they used to—not stopping as good as they used to—those little subtle symptoms. If we can catch the lameness at that stage before the horse actually gets so sore that they stop performing, we can make everything better.” Heite says catching pain early is easier on the horse, and as the rider, you’re not going to be working with a horse unable to perform at their full potential.

Treatment methods There are a variety of methods available to treat arthritis. Heite says traditionally, the first line of defense is non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. Affected joints can be injected with medications like NSAIDs, steroidal medications, hyaluronic acid and others. “We’ve had a lot of new advancements in what is called regenerative medicine,” Heite said. “Proteins and acids that we take out of the horse’s own blood supply and inject back into the horse—like PRP [platelet-rich-plasma], stem cells and those types of products are showing quite good results with a lot less side effects than the traditional steroid injections.” While you can’t prevent arthritis, Heite says preventative medicine does work in slowing its onset and progression. “I would encourage everybody to utilize joint therapy products like Legend and Adequan, because they do actually work,” Heite said. “Are they going to prevent us from having to inject your horse with medication? No, but they are going to stave it off, and they are going to keep your horse happier and healthier in between treatments.” FOUR

Because weather changes impact ropes, weather dictates the way Classic ropes are manufactured. The amount of twist put into ropes and the kick (the amount ropes are pushed out at the bottom) are adjusted for different seasons. This ensures quality and consistency in feel, regardless of conditions. Always remember to store your rope bag at room temperature for best-keeping.

Cold Weather Cold weather relaxes fibers causing ropes to soften and lose kick, therefore causing backswing. Try a firmer lay for cooler weather.

Hot Weather Hot weather tightens fibers causing ropes to harden. Try a softer lay for warmer weather.

We don’t mind saying it: Lone Star has the fastest ropes. The statement might be arguable, but we think it’s on the money when you look at what happened at the National Finals Rodeo in December. Here’s a breakdown of what our Lone Star Pro Team was up to in Vegas: • Sawyer Gilbert won the 2021 World Championship and average. She was the only breakaway competitor to rope all 10 head and finished with an average of 46.3 seconds • Breakaway roper Joey Williams’ clocked the fastest time in two rounds - 1.7 and 1.8 and shared fastest time in a third • Coleman Proctor, with heeler Logan Medlin, won two rounds at the NFR, including the ninth round where the duo grabbed an event-best time of 3.5 seconds • Dustin Egusquiza, who left Las Vegas ranked No. 3 in the world, tied for the fastest time with partner Travis Graves with a 3.5 in the 10th round Thanks to legendary rope maker Guy Alford’s attention to detail and keen understanding of what these athletes need to succeed on the rodeo world’s grandest stage, Lone Star is proud of how well our ropes hold up to the competition year in and year out. Sawyer Gilbert For world champion Gilbert, whose cool demeanor and obvious fearlessness in Vegas served her well, nothing matches the Pink Caddy when it comes to doing exactly what she needs her rope to do in big competitions. Designed by Alford along with the top breakaway ropers in the country, the Pink Caddy has five strands, a nylon poly blend, and an Evo Tech core that gives it the perfect weight. “The five-strand gives the rope a great body,” Gilbert says. “Out of all the ropes I have tried, it’s the only one that I can consistently feel my tip. The Pink Caddy is super reactive when my eight curls. It’s the fastest feeling rope that I have ever been able to swing.” Dustin Egusquiza Fast is a word you often see next to Egusquiza’s name. The 26-year-old from Florida, who uses the Helix by Lone Star, clocked two of the top three fastest roping times in 2021 with partner Graves - 3.3 and 3.4 seconds. For him, the head rope’s unique engineering and multidirectional, double-twisted core provide the perfect balance. “The Helix has a smooth, fast feel, which I love,” Egusquiza says. “But it also stays open when reaching.” Coleman Proctor Proctor, who competed in his 6th NFR in 2021, says the rope he uses, The Fever, is not only the fastest rope he’s used, it’s also smooth and reliable. Since the day he first picked one up, he’s never thought about using any other rope. “I don’t know why anyone would use anything but The Fever,” Proctor says. Proctor says the fast rope is also “forgiving” every time. “The Fever has been the fastest, smoothest, most consistent head rope I’ve used in my life. I don’t know how Guy Alford designed this rope to never slide on the horn if you don’t want it to. From my first Lone Star rope to the one I use today, The Fever has been the absolute pinnacle of consistency.” Joey Williams Consistency. That’s another word that’s important to Lone Star Pro Teamers like Williams, who lives in Montana where the winters can be bitingly cold. Although she is able to practice at an indoor facility near her home, she does appreciate the reliability of breakaway favorite the Pink Caddy. “It’s just so consistent,” says Williams, who finished 10th in world standings after an electric performance at the NFR. “The Pink Caddy keeps its feel in the heat of the summer as well as the cold winter months in Montana.” Okay, Lone Star has the fastest and most consistent ropes. We don’t mind saying that, either.

STILL THE ONE Vin Fisher shares why one of rodeo’s founding disciplines is still his favorite today. By Abigail Boatwright

Alongside saddle bronc riding, steer roping is one of the earliest rodeo disciplines, says top-ranked steer roper Vin Fisher. It’s a challenging event for both horse and rider because of the rules to be followed in order to turn in a qualifying run. “The unique thing about steer roping is that it’s an event where there are so many more variables, because it only allows for a slickhorn catch, unlike some of the other roping events,” Fisher said. Once roped, the roper must place the rope of the right side of the steer, below its hip, and then bring the steer to ground, and unlike calf roping, it has to stay down— requiring the horse to pull the steer—until the rider can dismount and approach the steer to tie its legs together. Only then will the time stop. If the steer gets up, the rider is disqualified. “The great thing about steer roping is the horses that do it well, have to be able to stop on a voice command and respond to you as you’re running away from him,” Fisher said. “That is extremely hard to get the horse trained to do consistently, every single time. There’s a lot of horsemanship that goes into steer roping.”

Meant to Be Fisher grew up surrounded by his dad steer roping, and says he fell in love with the sport when he was 17. Although he has a day job and steer ropes on the weekends, the 18-time National Finals Steer Roping qualifier and winner of over $1.2 million is passionate about the sport. “After I ran one and went to a roping that weekend at Monahan’s, I was just hooked,” Fisher said. “I didn’t know I was going to like it that much, but I think part of why I like it is because it’s not a full-time job like the other rodeo events. We only have about 50 events a year, and a lot of them are really big events.”

Evolution With faster times and greater cash prizes, steer roping is growing in popularity, says Fisher. “Our finals have just continued to improve, and the last three years, the Cowboy Channel has really started promoting steer roping,” Fisher said. “Now you can watch the steer roping in the short goes at Pendleton or Cheyenne alongside the other events. Similar to the Extreme Bulls competitions that have boomed in popularity, an increasing number of Signature Steer Roping Events have been produced: a steer roping-only competition that counts for Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association standings. “We’re definitely seeing things evolve and grow,” Fisher said. Fisher says steer roping competitors have an older average age than other rodeo disciplines because it’s not a core event for junior, high school or college rodeos. But the increased visibility through televised and streamed steer roping competitions, plus being added to more rodeos and Signature Events, Fisher says the growth of the sport has extended to a different age bracket. “We’re starting to see some newer, younger guys,” Fisher said.

Worth the work Although the event is challenging, Fisher says it’s worth the effort to hone your craft. “Steer roping is extremely hard, and it takes a lot of time, a lot of work and a lot of practice,” Fisher said. “There’s a lot more to the sport than just going out and roping, and it will just come natural and so much easier if you go through the basics of learning how to do it before you actually go live action and tie one down.”

STYLE vs. SPEED What separates a winning show roping horse from a rodeo rope horse? Cade Rice discusses. discusses. By Abigail Boatwright Although roping is a timed event, roping the steer the fastest does not always win. That’s because when you’re competing in a horse show roping class, the event is judged. American Quarter Horse Association and American Paint Horse Association world champion team roper Cade Rice says the difference is noticeable, but it doesn’t mean you need two different horses. Roping for Show Rice says a show rope horse needs to be correct in its form from the beginning to the end of the run. “I like the horse to be a little bit straighter,” Rice said. “For the heel horse, I don’t like their head all the way to the inside. I want them looking at the steer, I want them to follow their nose, but I don’t want them to overflex. I want their shoulders up, their body square, and with the steer.” A judge is looking for a rope horse to be on their hind end when working the steer. “The more the horse is on their hind end, the more they have control of the steer—the more the horse pulls with its front end, then you don’t have control of the steer,” Rice said. A slower time can actually result in a higher score in a show roping class, if the horse is presenting the desired style throughout the run, says Rice. Rodeo Roping A rodeo rope horse needs to be correct, but the only thing that matters is getting the job done without any penalties. “They’re not getting judged, they’re going on time,” Rice said. “More or less, they just need to be transportation.” Choosing a Path Rice says the majority of rope horses are started the same way, in similar programs, regardless of if their destination is show or rodeo. Where they go next usually depends on that horse’s talent and the skills of the people who’ll be riding him. “If you take your horse to a guy that makes his living with a rope and going fast, I think the horse is probably going to evolve in that direction,” Rice said. “If you go to a trainer that wants to keep the horse in the training program for a few years, that horse is going to stay a lot straighter and truer [for show roping].” Can you use the same horse for both? “Not all rodeo horses are going to show, and not all show horses are going to rodeo,” Rice said. “Some are going to be better at one than the other. The horse is going to tell you what he can and can’t do, and what his strong suits are, and what his limitations are. The horse is going to tell you the truth.” Rice says some horses would do well in both arenas, but may not have gotten the experience with the trainer or rider they’ve been paired with to excel in that sphere. “I think a lot of the horses are trained the same way,” Rice said. “I can take the majority of my show horses and can go compete in a jackpot rodeo and not have a problem with it.”

Learning the Ropes on Ropes By South Texas Tack Team Everyone from a carpenter, to a mechanic, to a saddle maker would agree that selecting the right tool for a job is the first step and the most important. For cowboys and cowgirls this translates to rope selection. Advancements in technology, materials and overall knowledge of what works best have given rope companies the ability to design and manufacture a large number of ropes to choose from. Each rope is created to meet the demands of anything that may be running your way. As the number of ranchers, cowboys, cowgirls and rodeo competitors utilizing ropes has grown, many things have evolved in the rope industry. The one thing that has remained the same is rope selection ultimately boils down to what feels best in your hands. Modern ropes can generally be classified as a team rope, calf rope, or ranch rope. Let’s break down the differences in team ropes and calf ropes; and why they are designed the way they are.

Team Ropes With team ropes, the main factors in selection of the rope are broken-down by the number of strands, length, the material used and the lay of the rope. Through years of testing and designing, rope manufacturers discovered that increasing strand count helps minimize friction or drag while feeding the rope, which means they are able increase weight without increasing the diameter of the rope. The most common number of strands for team ropes are 3-strand and 4-strand. A 4-strand rope has four strands twisted together and will have a tighter feel, more body and be rounder than a rope with 3-strands. These strands may also be twisted around a core to provide more body to the rope. All strands may be the same material, or one or more could be another material blended in, such as nylon and poly. The length of a team rope depends whether it is a head rope or a heel rope. Team ropes used for heading range from 30-32 feet in length. While team ropes used for heeling are generally longer ranging from 35-37 feet in length. The majority of Team Ropes are composed of either a nylon/poly blend or all-nylon. A nylon rope has the benefit or withstanding varying temperatures while still keeping its “shape”. These types of ropes will keep will bounce back to its manufactured shape rather than easily being stretched out. A poly/nylon blend rope is going to possess similar benefits of an all-nylon rope but will have added weight in your hand. A poly/nylon blend rope tends to have more “body” and will keep the “stretch” put into them.

FOURTEEN

southtexastack.com

When it comes to the lay of your rope, this refers to the stiffness. Ranging from xx-soft to medium soft for head ropes, and soft to medium hard for heel ropes. The stiffness of a rope effects the loop staying open more and holding shape when thrown. In general, the stiffer the lay the longer the loop stays open. This is why heel ropes are much stiffer as they are used to make generally a bigger loop or “trap” that requires this loop to remain vertical and stay open longer which helps the steer to step into the “trap” delivered by the heeler.

Calf Ropes The selection of a calf rope takes into consideration very different parameters because the task at hand is very different than that needed from a team rope. Calf ropes require a rope to typically be soft or extra soft to create the action on the delivered loop which is the “figure 8” around the calf’s neck which prevents the calf from running through the loop and ensures a clean neck catch. Although the variety is not as wide as that of team ropes, when selecting a calf rope the things to take into consideration are the length, diameter, the material used and the feel of the rope. In the manufacture of ropes used for calf roping, the two main choices regarding material are the poly and the poly grass. A poly rope can come in three or four-strand varieties and is very consistent in various weather conditions. Among beginners and those wanting a rope with very little maintenance, the poly rope is often the top choice. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the poly grass better known as a “grass rope”; these ropes are highly sought after by professional and highly competitive ropers because of the advantages in these ropes. Today’s poly grass calf ropes also have a core that’s typically composed of lead and poly fibers inside classifying it as a poly grass. This unique feature gives this rope enough weight and body for covering long distances when reaching and allowing the rope to settle directly on the target and not bounce off. These ropes have been found to have very little to no stretch and have balance and a fluid feel throughout the length of the rope while having the weight pierce through the wind force created by the speed of the chase. Another vital selection criteria in calf ropes is the size, or diameter, of the rope. Poly and poly grass ropes are both sized by diameter, but size is expressed in different ways. For example, a size 57 poly grass is similar in size to a 10.0 -10.25 poly rope, and a size 60 grass rope is closer in size to 10.5 poly calf rope. As diameter increases both weight and body increase if the ropes are made of the same material. Though a beginner and an experienced roper may both enjoy the benefits of the same poly rope, they might choose very different ropes based on their size and weight. What this means is that their choice would largely be affected by their respective hand size and strength. A beginner with small hands, might prefer to start with a smaller, soft poly. While an experienced adult with larger hands would start with a heavier rope and increased sizes around 10.25 to 11.0 diameters. Hopefully this information will help give you a head start deciding which rope is best for you. Visit The LET’S ROPE department at South Texas Tack for all your roping needs. letsrope.com

MAKING GOOD ROPE HORSES

The American Rope Horse Futurity Association offers an enticing avenue for good all-around rope horses to shine in competition. By Abigail Boatwright Held concurrently with the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s prestigious Snaffle Bit Futurity each October in Fort Worth, Texas, the American Rope Horse Futurity Association’s World Championship is a premier event capping off the organization’s six shows around the country each year. What makes the ARHFA events popular with top horse show and rodeo team ropers alike? ARHFA co-founder Jay Wadhams says the uptick in prize money has played a role in growing the show by 80% since its inception—which in turn, helps promote the growth of the rope horse industry. Jay and his wife Lindsay started the ARHFA in 2007 with around 30 to 40 horses, but the organization really got off the ground when it partnered with the NRCHA’s Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2016 for its world championship show, which showcases 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old rope horses, with added cash incentives for 4-year-olds. The 2021 ARHFA World Championship boasted over 1,000 entries, and $100,000 money added. “So many people want to come here and watch the ropers, and they want to watch the finals of the Snaffle Bit Futurity,” Wadhams said. “And a lot of people are looking for horses at the event, because a lot of the three-year-olds from the Snaffle Bit may not go on as cow horses—a lot of ropers buy them for clients and train them.” ARHFA events are scored differently than most other events—a combination of two judged scores and one timed TWENTY

score, for a combined total score. Wadhams says this format results in great all-around rope horses. “We just want good, solid rope horses,” Wadhams said. “Training them for what the general public wants is really what we’re after. Not everybody can take a show horse and just rope on them; and jackpot horses are in high demand. So we’re training them for a greater appeal.” Although ARHFA holds two calf roping events each year, the championship show is exclusive to team ropers because of scheduling limitations. Wadhams says 2022 will include a new ARHFA event in April in California—which he anticipates will be popular, because the ARHFA championship’s live feed gets the most hits from California and Brazil. More added money will go to Intermediate and Limited divisions to deepen the pool of competitors. Whether in person or watching the live feed, Wadham says ARHFA events are attracting attention. “I think our event is becoming a spectactor sport—the stands are full, and it’s just growing,” Wadhams said. “People love to come and watch all those guys rope. It is very tough, but it’s good watching, and that’s what we want. We want it to be tough.” southtexastack.com

It was our first line of boots to be built outside the USA, in Mexico. We partnered with a factory that we respect and admire, and one that had proven they build boots like WE do – with quality materials and attention to detail. We were so impressed with their talent for building boots and their like-mindedness in the processes that we invited one of the owners to come be a part of the production team in our Texas factories. Since joining us in Mercedes, Carlos Rodriguez has helped us streamline and grow our Anderson Bean production and is now our Chief Operating Officer and a partner with the Evans and Vaughan families in the business. We still work closely with the factory that builds the standard Horse Power boots in Leon, Guanajuato and we are continuing to grow that business with our retail partners. But as retailers asked us for a WELL-CONSTRUCTED EXOTIC BOOT BUILT IN MEXICO, we found we couldn’t do it at the price point they were looking for at our current partner factory. We have always been known for the ability to adapt quickly and willingness to try new things, so that’s what we did.

A TOP HAND IS THAT COWBOY WHO IS A LITTLE BETTER THAN THE REST. T W E N T Y- E I G H T

J

UST LIKE A TOP HAND ON THE RANCH, OUR HORSE POWER TOP HAND COLLECTION HAS A FEW FEATURES THAT MAKE IT SUPERIOR TO OUR STANDARD COLLECTION.

WE SET UP A SMALL FACTORY IN MEXICO TO BUILD THE HORSE POWER TOP HAND LINE. This factory builds boots in the same profile as the original Horse Power line, but with ELEVATED DETAILS LIKE TOP-QUALITY EXOTIC LEATHERS FROM THE SAME SUPPLIERS AS THE ANDERSON BEAN BRAND, COWHIDE LININGS AND LEATHER STACKED HEELS. It is operated under the same principles as our Texas-based factories – we work to build the best boot, at the best price point, with the best materials while providing the best way of life possible for all those involved. [That’s a lot of “bests” isn’t it?] Well, that’s what we strive to be – THE BEST.

You’ll still enjoy quality construction and a generous fit, but you can also expect genuine exotic leathers, leather stacked heels and an upgraded cushion insole. We, THE RIOS OF MERCEDES FAMILY OF BRANDS, (and the makers Anderson Bean boots) kicked off our Horse Power brand in the early 2000’s. southtexastack.com

THE SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE ALLEN BACH’S LONG, SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN team roping was set in motion by meeting John Reynolds and forming a relationship with his family. In his youth, Bach played lots of sports, including baseball, basketball, football, and of course, roping. The world of sports instilled a competitive mindset and approach in the young roper. Bach had a knack for roping, and at 13 years old, he took a welding class and fashioned a rudimentary roping machine for one of his class projects. The experience gave Bach a taste of creativity and craftsmanship. At 22, Bach moved to California and became a world champion team roper. His roping career includes conducting more than 600 roping schools, qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo 30 times, and bringing home four world champion gold buckles. During this career, Bach developed a talent for teaching and understanding the roping landscape. In the winters, he would travel to his brother’s ranch in Chandler, Arizona, so he could rope year around. He spent long periods of time with other ropers in Arizona and started mentoring other roping athletes. He honed his ability to teaching and increased his knowledge base to help others to the best of his ability. Ropers, family, and friends began to use a phrase “the spirit of excellence.” It became a mantra that encourage people to do their best. Anything they would do -- roping, T H I R T Y- T W O

riding, hard labor, loving their families -- was done with the spirit of excellence. Lee Nelson approached Bach and showed him his roping machine. The two developed a partnership and developed a roping machine. Although it was a breakthrough in the roping industry, it had many drawbacks: It didn’t match the speed of the horse, it couldn’t make a hard turn, and the body was very unrealistic. Bach was eager to develop a new-andimproved version. At that point Nelson and Bach sold the company, but Bach wasn’t finished trying to make product a that truly helped ropers become better. He was determined, and it’s rumored he created thousands of prototypes for the Smarty legs. He was intent on making the rope feedback lifelike for the roper. He took tons of photos from every angle of the perfect steer to have the perfect body for his machines. The common phrase of “Let’s go rope a dummy” is widely used, and one day Allen joked, “Lets go rope a smarty!” And that is how Smarty got its name. Smarty was established in 2010 with Allen Bach’s blood, sweat, and tears. The whole company still uses “the spirit of excellence” to guide employees and its Pro Team. Smarty’s mission is to help people become better ropers and better cowboys, while making a positive impact on the western community. ™

IF IT’S NOT A SMARTY IT’S JUST A DUMMY
