Fiberglass Boat Recycling – or Landfill? I recently ran into an article that was originally published in Soundings Trade Only that was an in-depth look at this problem (www.tradeonlytoday.com/dealers/the-deadboat-disposal-crunch). In Florida, there are an estimated 1500 abandoned or derelict boats. The Trade Only article stated that in January 2016, it was estimated that it would cost $3.5 million to clean up Florida’s active case file of 275 derelict boats. If you calculated the cost of cleaning up 1500 boats using those figures, the cost would be $20 million. If you have ever seen a derelict sailboat put on a truck to haul away, which I have, you can see that it is no small operation. A large crane has to pick the boat out of the water and place it on a semi-truck trailer. And the boat never sits nicely on the trailer—like a big box would. And the mast has to be off it, then it has to be secured safely for road travel, probably a long trip. Almost all of these boats go to the dump where they will be crushed as much as possible, then buried in a hole. There’s a lot of money involved with all these steps. And much of that, if not all, is paid for by the government, because the private sector doesn’t deal with it. We are paying big money to create another dump in a land that is already filled with dumps, because the United States is so big that land for dumps seems plentiful—plus it is out-ofsite and out-of-mind. So—what do we do? There are basically three solutions, but remember this: 90 percent of the fiberglass boats out there are powerboats and most of those are small boats. There are an estimated 12 million registered boats in the U.S., most of which are fiberglass. All of these eventually have to be dealt with, besides the millions out there already at the dump or ready to go to the dump. The cheapest way to get rid of a fiberglass boat?

Abandon it somewhere in some remote back water, or sink it. Not options that we need to have. Other options are chemical treatment or burning, both of which have high costs, besides environmental problems. The only real solution is recycling, which involves removing everything that’s not fiberglass and then grinding it up and making products, like benches, pilings, and planking for decks, seawalls, etc. In the U.S., there are a few companies that are recycling fiberglass, but Europe is doing the most, partially because they are more concerned about recycling than the U.S. is, plus they have less room for landfills. The main problem is cost and who pays for it; cost of getting the boat to the plant, removing non-fiberglass items and the cost of the machine to grind them up. Then there’s the cost of making products. These companies don’t buy fiberglass boats; people pay them to dispose of them. They are an option to landfill. And the big question is: Do landfill costs really reflect the real cost of a dump? It’s sweeping the dirt under the rug. Eventually, we have to deal with it. Many have come up with ideas to pay for the cost by wrapping it into the cost of the boat on purchase with a tax, or a tax that is incorporated into the sales price of a boat whenever it is transferred to a new owner. When I think of the $20-million estimate of disposing of the 1500 derelict boats in Florida mentioned at the beginning of this article, I wonder if a tax to pay for them will be the answer. And that’s only to pay for them being removed for landfill. Many states have deposits worked into the price of a bottle—so they aren’t just added to the landfill without some incentive to return them for recycling. Can you imagine adding a deposit onto the cost of a fiberglass boat when you purchase it? They say a boat has a useful life of maybe up to 50 years. Recycle or landfill?

Coral Reefs in the Florida Keys are Slowly Dying Tourism is the life blood of the Florida Keys, supplying 54 percent of the jobs. It is really the only way for people to make money in the Keys. Diving on the coral reefs in the Keys is a “key” part of that industry. Yet the coral cover in the Keys has been dying off for decades. Many have been telling this story, but little has been done to solve the problem, although the government has spent a lot of money studying and monitoring the problem. Now, those who are studying it in hopes of saving the coral are facing cutbacks in EPA spending—the opposite of what is needed. In recent years, millions have been spent converting the

Keys’ individual septic and cesspool sewage systems to central sewer systems, which has ended the problem of human waste seeping into the ocean, which was helping to destroy the coral. But that’s not enough. Today, less than 10 percent of the reef systems are covered with living coral. The reefs are now covered with dead coral. Research has suggested that the main cause is global warming: the ocean waters are too warm to sustain the living coral that’s been there for tens of

High average water temperatures in recent years have caused much of the coral to die off through “bleaching” (when the corals turn white), a process which causes algae— that lives symbiotically with the coral—to be expelled from the coral, causing the coral to slowly die. In 2014-2016, the world experienced the longest recorded bleaching event, caused by above-average ocean temperatures. Much of the coral in the Keys was killed—or diseased—which leads to death. It is estimated that in 2016, 29-50 percent of the coral in the Great Barrier Reef was killed off. Warmer waters are not the only cause of corals dying. The polluted ocean waters make for unhealthy corals, which along with warmer waters cause the corals to die. Cleaner water means healthier corals which have a greater ability to ward off the effects of bleaching. It’s obvious to all the Keys’ residents who have lived there for many decades—and others who have traveled to the Keys for many years—that the waters were once far cleaner and clearer. Man’s presence and lack of regard for the problems caused by civilization’s pollution have caused the problem. Many say it is now too late to save the coral reefs and they

will be dead before long. Others continue to work on solving the problem of the dying corals. Information in this article was taken from an article in the Washington Post by Chris Mooney with graphics by Tim Meko.

Dead Zone in Gulf Larger than Ever The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, which has been growing for many years, was recently observed by scientists to be larger than ever. It currently covers about 8,776 square miles, which would be an area about 92 miles by 92 miles— about the size of the state of New Jersey. Dead zones are caused by agricultural and industrial runoff from land. The largest influx into the Gulf comes from the Mississippi River, which mainly happens in the spring when the river is flowing at its greatest. The excess nutrients from the runoff lead to a growth in algae, which when it dies, sinks to greater depths, which then cause an increase in bacteria, which sucks up all the oxygen in the water, causing fish and other life to leave or die off. With heavy rains this last year, the dead zone has increased by about 50 percent more than has been seen in the last five years.

Mermaid Shed Floats 1000 Miles from Key West to Louisiana A small floating shed with the painting of a Mermaid on it was found Aug. 2 about 180 miles south of Louisiana. The shed broke off its mooring a few days earlier in Key West during Tropical Storm Emily and drifted about 1000 miles before the Coast Guard heard about it from someone who spotted it drifting. The Coast Guard set a plane out to view it and took the accompanying photo. The Coast Guard first put out a call for its owner, which still remains in doubt. Reports are that the shed was originally anchored behind the Parrot Key Hotel and Resort in Key West, although no one has claimed ownership. The Coast Guard eventually gave up on finding the owners and said they would not tow it to shore. It was labeled a derelict vessel and a notice put out to other boats about it.

Sailboat Sales Drop; Brokerage Sailboat Sales Remain Virtually Unchanged While Average Boat Cost Increases TradeOnlyToday.com reported that sales of new sailboats in May went down from 216 in May 2016 to 137 in May 2017, a drop of 36.6 percent. Year over year since May 2016 through May 2017, sales dropped from 899 units to 565 units, a drop of 37.2 percent. Brokerage sales of sailboats from January to June this year compared to the same period one year ago: Sales are the same at 2605 this year compared to 2606 in 2016. The average boat value increased 13 percent from $76,064 to $85,920. The average number of days to sell a brokerage sailboat decreased slightly from 322 days to 319 days. Brokerage sales of sailboats concentrated on boats longer than 36 feet.

Key West Race Week Canceled for 2018 – Will it Return? By Steve Morrell

n May, the Storm Trysail Club announced that it was canceling Key West Race Week (KWRW) 2018. The club stated that they might be bringing it back in 2019, but changes in the event in recent years have made it difficult to run the one-week regatta. Storm Trysail Club, a not-for-profit organization, took over the event, held each January, from Premiere Racing (a for-profit company) in 2016. Premier Racing ran KWRW under the direction of Peter Craig for the previous 21 years. The event was originally started in 1987 by Yachting Magazine. Craig ran it in the 90s and eventually took it over with his company Premiere Racing. Craig said the cost and less participation made it impossible for Premiere to continue. Storm Trysail Club said they canceled the 2018 race week for the same reasons. KWRW reached its peak in participation in 2001 with 326 boats competing. Participation had been declining for years, especially after the collapse of the economy in 2008. In 2016, 130 boats competed, the first year the Storm Trysail Club was in charge. In 2017—the 30th anniversary—only 90 boats competed. Other contributing factors included the increased cost of staying in Key West. Key West prices, for both living there and tourism, increased drastically in the 2000s, and today, hotel room rates in Key West are the highest in Florida.

These additional costs, along with declining participation, pressured the organizers to seek more and more sponsors to finance the event. And with fewer participants, it became more difficult to find sponsors. The two main sponsors, Quantum and Mount Gay Rum, were happy with the event, but the number of smaller sponsors needed to help with costs was declining. The budget for the event was over $500,000. Just the cost of housing over 100 volunteers was $95,000. And for the participants, getting to remote Key West with both crew and boat was a long and expensive ride, costing as much as $10,000 for many just for a crane to take a boat in and out of the water. Marina space was also difficult and expensive. In the early days, amateurs raced, often sleeping on their boats. As the years went by, the race boats became more professional with most boats having at least one professional crewmember on board. As the boats became more professional, the boats had fewer accommodations for those staying on board, meaning more hotel costs. Other events around the country competed with KWRW, like Charleston Race Week—held in April—which has become the largest keelboat event in the Western Hemisphere. Charleston is closer and cheaper and a shorter event—all factors which make it less expensive and less time-consuming. All these reasons put the future of KWRW in doubt. The Storm Trysail Club says that it will be observing the changing face of racing and these large regattas to see if it will come back, perhaps in a very different form—maybe for a shorter race week or something else that will cost less and bring more racers. But everyone who goes to the event each year agrees that there are few better places to sail in the middle of winter—and party like crazy at night—than Key West.

e have owned a Tanzer 7.5-meter (25 feet) sloop since 1987. She was a fine boat unimproved, except for weather helm and an iron keel. We have replaced, modified, and upgraded almost everything aboard, modified the rudder, encapsulated the keel and added a large amount of gear and electronics, and painted her with Awl Grip. With the improvements we made, she is now a fast, good-looking boat that sails well, even on jib alone, is very comfortable, well-ventilated, and can go almost anywhere with her 34-inch draft. She is very seaworthy and has carried us safely through storms and very rough seas offshore. She cruises at 6.5 to 7.2 mph under power and reaches similar speeds with a good wind. She does not punch through a steep chop as well as some larger boats, and she makes spray motoring into waves. She is well powered with a 9.9 electric-lift Honda outboard and 24-gallon fuel capacity. We have sailed her to most of the islands in the Bahamas, in the Gulf Stream from Miami to Hilton Head, all through the Keys many times, and to the west coast of Florida as far north as St. Petersburg. We prefer to anchor in isolated anchorages and are very comfortable

aboard for as much as a month at a time. No wires slap in the mast and waves do not slap under the stern. The cockpit is long enough to lay down in and seats four comfortably. I am always thankful for her size when I clean or paint the bottom, or raise the mainsail, or buy gear. She has a 110-square-foot main and a 220-square-foot 150 percent Genoa, both recently replaced, with Harkin roller furling. She has a small storm jib, and a spinnaker. We added a Bimini with a custom slide out forward panel, a blue Sunbrella awning, side curtains stern sundowner, and

a forward hatch awning. We also added a clear dodger with clear side curtains. The mainsail cover attaches behind the winches, allowing us to access the Genoa halyard without removing the cover. We have blue Sunbrella covers and screens for all openings. We upgraded to Anderson 28S selftailing sheet winches, Lewmar halyard winches, a winch for the spinnaker control lines, and a winch on the boom for the outhaul and reefing. We installed cockpit-controlled sliding cars for the Genoa sheets and a new traveler for the main. When cruising, we carry a nine-foot Achilles (with an inflatable floor), a 5hp Nissan outboard, and a mooring whip on the stern to hold the dinghy away from the boat when at anchor. We have an outboard hoist for the dinghy motor that can also be used to lift the Honda. The inflated dinghy fits nicely on the bow and can be lifted aboard with the spinnaker halyard and pole. The dinghy motor stores on a motor mount that can be raised to the stern rail, or lowered to allow the motor to propel the Tanzer in an emergency. We reinforced the transom to support the outboards and the mooring whip. There is a swing up ladder on the stern, which can be let down from the water. We installed heavy duty pintles and gudgeons, and added about six inches to the leading edge of the outboard rudder just below the edge of the stern. That gives her a bal-

anced helm that is light to the touch and keeps her tracking straight even in the gusts. She sails faster too. We replaced and upgraded all the stanchions and added 12-inch, hurricane-grade cleats on the bow and stern. We reinforced the keel bolts. We replaced the forward hatch with a heavy duty one, and replaced the six quarter-inch-thick fixed side ports with half-inch Plexiglas in new port frames. We installed 12inch hatches in the deck on either side about a foot aft of the shrouds, and opening ports in both sides of the dog house amidships for great ventilation. We added a solar vent just forward of the mast and one in the side of the dog house just above the stove. We added an excellent 26-pound stainless Ultima anchor and a bow roller. When the boat is moving fast, the stern tends to sit lower allowing water to come up through the cockpit drains. I built a Plasteak solid floorboard to keep our feet dry, and that works well. We added an additional drain on the transom in case the other drains get clogged by leaves in a hurricane. We replaced the front teak trim boards on the companionway hatch and the hatch boards with Plasteak as well as the handrails on the cabin top. It looks great and requires no maintenance. Down below, a counter runs from side to side just forward of the cockpit and companionway hatch. We installed

ew places seem to illicit as much of a reaction among Bahamas cruisers as George Town on Great Exuma Island at the bottom of the Bahamian Exumas island chain. For those cruisers looking for quiet, deserted cays to get away from it all, George Town is to be assiduously avoided; as we sit here at Capt. Cindy and First Mate anchor, we are surrounded and deck ape Martin. by more than 300 other boats. Other boaters make a beeline directly for George Town and stay here throughout the entire boating season. George Town, a settlement of around 1,000 people, is the capital of the Exumas and is situated on the west side of Elizabeth Harbor around what is euphemistically called Lake Victoria. This roughly circular saltwater lake, approximately 200 yards across, is literally the heart of town. Access to town for boaters requires one to dinghy ashore and enter the lake by passing underneath a very low narrow fixed bridge; larger boats cannot enter the lake. A free-floating dinghy dock, as well as a free potable water spigot, is provided by Exuma Market on the east side of the lake. Large boats can dock at the Exuma Yacht Club. but the approach can be shallow depending on the tides. The town offers just about everything the cruising boater needs. It has two large grocery stores, a well-stocked boat supply store, a Yamaha outboard dealer, laundromat, hardware store, a NAPA auto parts store, several liquor stores, and a number of bars and restaurants. There are government offices for customs and immigration, and several brokers who can help you navigate customs laws and duties for bringing goods into the Bahamas, if what you need is not locally available. The recently-completed hospital provides medical care facilities for emergencies and George Town’s international airport provides easy connections direct to Florida. George Town and Stocking Island offer a number of eateries and drinkeries, many of which feature live island music throughout the week. Cindy and I prefer Blu, the restaurant and bar at the Exuma Yacht Club. Situated in George Town on the second floor of the EYC building, it SOUTHWINDS

The dinghy dock on Lake Victoria. George Town is situated on the west side of Elizabeth Harbor around what is euphemistically called Lake Victoria. This roughly circular saltwater lake, approximately 200 yards across, is literally the heart of town.

offers a panoramic open air view of Elizabeth Harbor. Their regular menu features an excellent burger and Bahamian staples like conch fritters, but the chef really excels at his daily specials. The staff is very friendly, engaging and accommodating and the Wifi is free, and by our experience, the most reliable in the area. Saturday evenings they offer live “rake n’ scrape” music followed by an open mic for the talented, brave or intoxicated. It’s a good time! Elizabeth Harbor, formed by the east coast of Great Exuma and the parallel west coast of Stocking Island, is huge, running around eight miles long and a mile wide. Water depth between these islands runs between 8 to 25 feet, depending upon where you choose to drop anchor. The U.S. Navy dredged channels here during World War II, so the harbor is easily navigable. Holding varies from fair to

good, with sand bottom on the western side of the harbor and grass-and-sand on the eastern side. Wind protection is good from the southwest to the northwest and from the northeast to the east-southeast, though the width of the harbor may require you to move your boat depending on which direction the wind is coming from. Some affectionately call George Town “Chicken Harbor,” since many boaters opt not to undertake the challenge of continuing farther south along the “Thorny Path,” beating into the wind to reach the Caribbean. Others call it “Adult Summer Camp.” Folks meet daily for beach volleyball, bocce ball, water aerobics, beach yoga, DJ dancing, impromptu jam sessions, treasures-from-the-bilge swap meets and both organized and freestyle drinking. There’s beach church and choir on Sundays and even weekly AA

meetings. The Chat n’ Chill bar and Volleyball Beach on the west side of Stocking Island are the social center of the George Town sailing community. The cruisers’ community here is very close knit; boaters often help each other out with mechanical and electrical repairs, re-anchoring unmanned boats dragging through the anchorage and assisting each other during medical emergencies. We witnessed two instances in which boaters banded together to stabilize a critically ill patient and coordinate their transfer from the anchorage to the hospital. There is a Cruisers’ Net every morning at 8am on VHF channel 72 that provides weather updates, broadcasts community announcements, allows local businesses to advertise specials and enables folks to request help or advertise stuff to buy, sell or trade. There is also an orientation for boaters new to George Town to help them navigate their way around. Cindy and I have been here for a few weeks, waiting for the start of the annual George Town Cruisers’ Regatta. This week-long celebration is now in its 37th year. The cruisers’ community forms committees to organize volleyball tournaments, a variety show, Street scene in George Town. There is also an annual slow pitch softball game against the local George Town Bahamian team; the cruisers’ team holds the distinction of having lost every game for the last 36 years. The regatta commenced with a dinghy poker run; teams of four dinghied to various local businesses to enjoy special offerings and be dealt a playing card at each stop. A brisk 20-knot wind made this a wet ride for all concerned. Four queens ended up taking the pot. On Saturday, Cindy and I packed up our folding chairs and dinghied across the harbor to go to the variety show. The harbor was calm, so the mile-long ride from Stocking Island to George Town was blessedly dry. Docking was quite an adventure though, with dozens of dinghies already tied up. However, a good amount of pushing and shoving and a long painter finally got us set. We strolled up to Regatta Park and set up our chairs with the rest of the audience. It was hot, but fortunately there was plenty of cold Sands and Kalik beer to ease the suffering. Several local groups also participated in the variety show; the local community is very supportive of the regatta and of the boaters in general. The Golden Globe Race 1968/2018 Around the World Alone Non-Stop – With No Modern Electronic Navigational Aids By Steve Morrell Golden Globe 2018 route.

n 1966, Sir Francis Chichester sailed solo around the world from England and back via the five southernmost great capes: Cape Horn (South America); Cape Agulhas (South Africa— the southernmost cape, being 19 miles farther south than Cape of Good Hope; Cape Leeuwin (southwestern cape of Australia); South East Cape (southern most point of the island of Tasmania); and South West Cape (southernmost point of the main islands of New Zealand). Upon his return, he was celebrated for his voyage, even being knighted by the Queen. But Chichester made one stop on the way around the world and received assistance. After his return, many were inspired to be the first to sail in the last great challenge in sailing: Sail solo around the world non-stop via the five great capes—a 30,000 mile trip. A year later, the British Sunday Times announced the Golden Globe Race: Be the first person to sail solo around the world non-stop via the five capes—unassisted by others. There were no rules and no fees; just a trophy for the first to accomplish the feat, and a £5000 UK Pounds prize for the fastest time. Nine people entered the race and their voyages became something of legend. Entrants were to depart between June 1, 1968 and October 31, 1968. They all departed England at various times in the starting window, as there was no official start. They were all to sail from west to east, making Cape Agulhas off South Africa as the first of the five capes. Of the nine, five became noteworthy. French sailor Bernard Moitessier went around the capes, but—because he rejected the commercialization of what he felt was a spiritual quest—upon re-entering the Atlantic, he decided to abandon the race and continued on

to the east to settle in Tahiti—even though he was in excellent position to be the first to finish. He sailed around the globe one-and-ahalf times by the time he settled in Tahiti. Chay Blyth entered the Golden Globe with no sailing experience. After rounding Cape Agulhas off South Africa, he retired from the race because of boat problems. Afterwards, he dedicated his life to the sea and later became the first to sail non-stop westwards around the globe. Donald Crowhurst sailed on a trimaran that he was building, although trimarans were just beginning to be noticed as oceangoing sailboats—even though they had a tendency to flip at sea. Crowhurst was convinced he would be first to finish with such a fast boat, but he had no real experience sailing on the open sea. He departed in a rush on the last day allowed, Oct. 31. His boat was not even finished and his supplies in a mess, even leaving many repair items on shore. After making it to somewhere in the southern Atlantic, communication became erratic—eventually stopping altogether—until some time later when he radioed that he had gone around the world and re-entered the Atlantic. In truth, he had stayed in the Atlantic the entire time. Eventually, he disappeared, but his boat was found, empty, shortly afterwards. He had kept two logs, one fake and one real. In the final analysis, after reviewing his real log and a vague suicide note, it was assumed he jumped overboard. It was a sad ending. Nigel Tetley’s boat sank with only 1100 nautical miles to go—while he was in the lead in the Atlantic on the return. He sailed on a trimaran and was the first to go around the Horn in a multihull. One person finished, becoming the first to sail around alone non-stop and to also win the prize with the fastest time. Robin Knox-Johnston sailed in his self-built (in India with two friends), 32-foot, Atkins-designed, double-ended wooden ketch, Suhali, which he sailed from Bombay back home to England, sailing solo from South Africa. When the Golden Globe came up, he was determined to sail in it and went to the Sunday Times for sponsorship. The Times considered him to be the least likely to win, so Knox-Johnston went to the neighboring Sunday Mirror where he arranged sponsorship. During the race, he faced his share of breakdowns. His hull was leaking so he dove on it and caulked it underwater. After losing his self-steering gear, he faced

serious problems with his rudder, which he eventually lashed tight. With no rudder, he learned how to balance the boat with the sails so the boat would steer itself on a continuous course on its own. Golden Globe Race 2018 Fast forward to June 2018—in a world where GPS and electronic charts, satellite communication and other electronic aids make finding your way around the world in a sailboat an easy thing to do. But still difficult is the sailing in the world’s great oceans, especially the southern ocean where no land exists to break up the waves that go around and around the southern end of the globe—the ocean that the Golden Globe Race sails in by rounding the five capes.. Along comes Australian sailor Don McIntyre who comes up with the Golden Globe Race 2018, which celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the original Golden Globe in 1968. In general, the skippers, boats and equipment must be somewhat equal to the conditions that Robin KnoxJohnston had in his 1968 trip. The 2018 version follows the same route, but this time, experience is required. Entrants must show 8000 ocean sailing miles, along with another 2000 miles solo. Entrants are allowed to enter by invitation only and must be 18 years of age. The boat must be of an approved design—and designed prior to 1988—and be 32-36 feet long, and it can be of fiberglass construction. Many production designs have already been approved. Plus there are numerous restrictions on sails, propellers, keel (must be full keel), rigging and miscellaneous other items. No electronic navigation aids are allowed. All entrants must use similar methods available to Knox-Johnston, who used a sextant and tables. There are features that allow for safety, such as a GPS Chartplotter—that will be in a sealed box—that will allow skippers to open in an emergency. Satellite tracking devices will be on all boats, but not available for viewing by the skippers. They will also be able to carry two satellite phones for one-a-week checking-in communication with race headquarters. There will also be a “two-way satellite short text paging unit (to race headquarters only) for twice daily 100-character text reports.” The rules and restrictions are quite extensive for skipper, boat and equipment and all details are included in the NOR, available at www.goldengloberace.com. The race begins on June 1, 2018 and everyone must depart within five days. As of press date in early August, here is the current line up, as described on the race website: The number of entrants for the Race is limited to 30, and the event is already oversubscribed. Professional sailors and adventurers dominate but they also include an architect, farmer, furniture maker, foreign exchange trader, engineer, teacher and social media technologist. All have considerable short—and single-handed sailing experience, one having logged five solo circumnavigations. They are from Australia (4), Brazil (1), Estonia (1), France (7), Ireland (1), Italy (2), New Zealand (1), Norway (1), Palestine (1), Russia (1), Switzerland (1), UK (5), and the USA (4). Their average age is 48. The youngest are 27 (one British woman, two Italian men and one American). The oldest is a 71 year-old Frenchman.

Shane Freeman – Entrant in the Golden Globe Race 2018 In the February issue (“From the Helm”), SOUTHWINDS published the story of 61-year-old Shane Freeman and his 35-foot boat, Mushka. Freeman planned to sail solo 14,500 miles from Australia to England, via Cape Horn, to enter the Golden Globe Race 2018. He left Australia on Dec. 12. His plans were to arrive in England in May, 2017. In February, about 600 nautical miles from Chile, his boat was rolled in a storm in the southern ocean, dismasting it. The boat was too damaged for repairs and he contacted authorities in Chile to be rescued. A 1000-foot, Panamanian-registered, Japanese-owned, bulk carrier of iron ore and coal came alongside his boat shortly afterwards and picked him up, in what was very difficult conditions. The freeboard of the ship was over 160 feet. The ship’s crew lowered lines so they could pull up the four bags that he had put together of items from his boat he wanted to keep. One of them hit the side of the ship on its way up and the contents spilled into the sea. It contained his log book and diary. He had to climb a 160-foot rope ladder up the side of the ship in rough seas, calling it the most hazardous time of his 90 days at sea. He managed to get up the swinging ladder, the ship went to port in Chile and he was able to return to Australia. He had to scuttle his boat, otherwise it would have been a hazard to navigation, and there was no practical way to retrieve it. things about the Keowee Sailing Club? “We had a member whose cousin came over to visit from somewhere in Central Europe,” recalls Smith. “After I described to him how much work we put into the club he said, ‘But you‘re all communists.’” I replied ‘Yes, but we’re voluntary communists.’ The club owns the property where it sits and we’re all delighted that we essentially control our own destiny.” “Communists,” perhaps, but maybe a more apt description is that they’re all members of a commune. No one actually lives at the club, of course, but the draw is so strong for members that it might seem that they do. Just ask past commodore Chris Zander, a multihull sailor who has been attending events at the club since 1992 when his parents joined. We orchestrate a lot of events such as our annual raft-up, our Grits and Haggis Regatta, and our Wednesday evening potluck suppers. Racing here is definitely competitive, but that doesn’t mean your fellow racers won’t help you out if something goes wrong. I’ve done some offshore racing events and competed at a few big regattas, but sailing here is really the most fun for me. There’s a real camaraderie underlying everything. A lot of the people that I know here get together even when the wind isn’t blowing. And because my family lives on the lake now, I’m at the club pretty often. It’s really where I’d rather be anyway.” And Zander isn’t alone in that leaning. Current club commodore Steve Barnes, a real estate broker who lives an hour and a half away in Asheville, N.C., also spends as much time at the club as he can. “This is a special place,” Barnes offers. “My wife and I love the scenery here. Yes, we’ve been fortunate to avoid those trends, but I attribute it to more than good luck. It’s really the culture of our club—shaped largely by the selfhelp aspect—that has enabled us to succeed. Sarasota Sailing Squadron 70th Annual Labor Day Regatta, Sept. 3 The Sarasota Sailing Squadron will be hosting its 71st Labor Day Regatta. With six courses on Sarasota Bay and PHRF racing in the Gulf, this regatta attracts sailors from all over the country. Courses will be set up hosting Opti Red, White, & Blue fleets, Opti Green Fleet, Laser, 420, Sunfish, Melges, SR Max, one-design, multihulls and PHRF fleets. This is a Sarasota Bay Boat of the Year Event. Camping is available on the club grounds. About 300 boats generally race in this regatta. Free dockage and limited camping are available. Food and entertainment will be provided throughout the weekend. Contact the SSS at 941-388-2355 for further information. RACE CALENDAR 33rd Dunedin Cup, Dunedin, FL, Sept. 29Oct. 1, Regatta Auction Fund Raiser Oct. 13 A week of youth, high school one-design, and PHRF racing. The Dunedin Cup, Suncoast Boat of the Year event, will be held on Sept. 30, with the 7th Annual DYSA Green Fleet (Kids) Invitational Regatta, sailing on St. Joseph’s Sound, on Sept. 30. The skippers meeting will be held at the Dunedin Boat Club on Friday, Sept. 29. The Dunedin Cup is a recognized Suncoast Boat of the Year event. The regatta fund raiser will be held Oct. 30. For more on the fundraiser, see the Calendar section in this issue. All proceeds from the fund raiser and regatta go to support the Dunedin Youth Sailing Association program. 34th Annual Pusser’s Rumgatta, Tampa, FL, Oct. 14 It’s nearly October and that means “Rumgatta” Time! The 34th Annual Pusser’s Rumgatta will be hosted by Tampa Sailing Squadron on Oct. 14 in Apollo Beach. New and exciting details this year include a freshly dredged channel and the introduction of a Singlehand and a Doublehand class on a long course! Following the racing is the Pusser’s Rum “Par-Ti” featuring music, rum libations, and dinner—all sponsored by Pusser’s Rum. The Scallywags of BCYC will be entertaining and Helly Hansen has sponsored a set of excellent foul weather gear for an auction to benefit Meals on Wheels. Racing classes: Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker, Racer Cruiser, Cruising, Singlehand, Doublehand, and Mother Lode class—which is designed to provide an easy pursuit race around Tampa Bay for the less serious racers. The Mother Lode does not require a PHRF rating. Boats are assigned a rating based on their equipment and the captain’s experience. A pre-race skippers meeting and party featuring keg beer and $5 hamburger dinners for the Rumgatta starts at 5pm, Friday, Oct. 13, at the squadron. 27th Annual Juana Good Time Regatta, Navarre Beach, Florida Panhandle, Sept. 8-10 Always held on the first weekend after Labor Day, this regatta is held at, and sponsored by, Juana’s Pagodas—a thatch-roofed volleyball beach bar just south of the Navarre Beach Bridge on the Florida Panhandle. Racing on Santa Rosa Sound, the regatta usually has about 50 boats participating: cruising catamarans, beach cats, trimarans, cruisers and windsurfers. It is open to all forms of multihulls. The Bright Yellow Boat By Vincent Mendes

n line with your “Bad Luck Bob” story in the March issue, I have one about a similar fellow (or possibly the same one) on the northeast coast. This occurred in the late 1970s at a small yacht club where I was a winch grinder and tactician aboard an Ericson 39. We were a serious racing team as well as serious partiers. Our boat was a few years old and showed some signs of hard racing, although we still won a lot of hardware. One summer, along came a new member who informed us that we were about to become second best because he had just ordered a new Ericson 39. When the boat arrived, it was an obnoxious bright yellow and stood out among the pristine white boats at the club. It took the fellow several weeks to get it in the water, because he had ordered it in unfinished condition and planned to install the engine, fittings, etc., himself. During this time, he regaled us with stories of how he was going to kick everyone’s ass. When the season finally began and he didn’t “kick ass,” he quieted down quite a bit. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to everyone, the head, which had been installed by the manufacturer, had not been connected to anything since he was going to finish the interior himself

and hadn’t specified whether he wanted a thru-hull or a holding tank. The discharge from the head simply emptied into the bilge. No one noticed this oversight until the “Round Long Island Race,” when the crew of 10 spent several days aboard. Everyone wound up eating and sleeping on deck the entire time, and when he pulled into the dock after the race, no one would tie up to leeward of him. He also had to find a new crew. Nothing much memorable happened for the rest of the summer until one Wednesday night after a race he came into the floating dock in front of the yacht club after most of the other boats were in. As was his fashion, he approached at speed and slammed the engine into reverse at the last minute. Now remember, he had installed the engine himself, and he seemed to have forgotten to properly lock the bolts holding the propeller shaft to the engine. When he hit reverse, the entire shaft and propeller took off for parts unknown—somewhere behind and under the boat—and the boat kept going at full speed. The crew was more or less used to his antics, so everyone had hold of something to brace themselves as he came in. Did I mention

that the floating dock was made of foam encapsulated by concrete? The bow of the boat climbed up about three feet onto the dock, shattering the wooden rub rail on the side of the dock, before slowly grinding its way back down with appropriate noise. About once a year, someone would try to ram and sink this dock to the great entertainment of everyone seated at the second floor bar at the yacht club. The latest score was: Floating Dock 7, Sailboats 0. This brings us back aboard the boat, where the propeller shaft left a gaping one-inch diameter hole in the stern. A torrent of water rushed in and hit the hot engine manifold producing a cloud of steam that poured out of the cabin like a volcano. Someone yelled “fire,” and the entire crew jumped overboard. One of the sailors from another boat realized what had happened and hopped aboard, tore off the engine compartment cover, located the leak, then tore off his T-Shirt and stuffed it into the hole where the propeller shaft had been. This stopped the inflow of water and kept the boat from sinking. After that, the bright yellow boat and its owner disappeared and we never heard from him again.
