Crunchy Crab Toast
1 loaf (16 ounces) French bread 1/4 cup butter, cubed 4 plum tomatoes, peeled and chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped 1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning 1/8 tsp salt + 1/8 tsp pepper

2 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons minced fresh cilantro 1 lb crabmeat - picked for shells 3/4 cup ricotta cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 2 cups shredded Italian cheese blend
• Cut bread in half horizontally; hollow out, leaving 1-inch shells. Crumble removed bread • In large skillet, melt butter, add half of the tomatoes. Add the old bay, salt, pepper, jalapeno, garlic and cilantro; cook and stir for 4 minutes. Remove from the heat. • In a large bowl, combine the crab, ricotta and sour cream. Stir in the tomato mixture, reserved bread crumbs and 1 cup cheese blend. Spoon into bread shells. • Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes. Top with cheese blend and tomatoes. Bake 5-7 minutes longer or until cheese is melted.

CHOCTAWHATCHEE The wide world of fly fishing has never been so accessible, thanks in part to one of the most influential organizations in the industry – Orvis. Founded by Charles F. Orvis in 1856, the company started as a tackle shop in Manchester, Vermont. Their most notable product was the first fully modern fly reel – which was considered a benchmark of American reel design. PLACE MAKERS
As prevalent as it is today, it’s hard to imagine that not long ago social media didn’t exist. In the early 2000s the idea of creating an online community was truly revolutionary. Leading that revolution on our home front was Kurt & Theresa Lischka, founders of the South Walton media empire known simply as Sowal.
In 1998 Kurt Lischka, who majored in Photography & Journalism, started Moon Creek Studios. His company offered stock & assignment photography as well as web design & hosting. The first of its kind in the area, he quickly gained local notoriety and created lasting partnerships, many of which are still in place today. He also dedicated time to donate a range of services to nearly every local charitable organization. These hugely beneficial services included website design, marketing, promotion, photography, video, and advertising. As his portfolio grew, so did his desire to share his craft and expertise with a larger audience. This led to the creation of the Sowal Forum.

The forum presented an opportunity for locals and visitors to connect online. It also gave Kurt an avenue to share some of the local beauty that he was (and still is) a master at capturing through photography. The forum quickly grew in popularity but in the mid 2000s severe storms swept through our region, and our community was effected both physically and online. The forum was a vital resource for all of South Walton. Kurt and others in the community, at the request of out-of-state users, went to check on their properties after the storms. Kurt also presented current conditions through his images. These images catapulted Sowal’s popularity and this was the first of many times their social media went viral.
Sowal’s colossal recognition created a need for expansion. Kurt’s vision was to evolve the site from strictly a forum to an insider’s guide for all of South Walton. Guides and content were added to the site and with the help of its built-in online community, the site became the authority for everything South Walton. At this time Theresa came on board, initially just to help with the site’s happenings and events calendar. Their photo journalistic presentation of South Walton has grown this secret enclave of paradise into the premier vacation destination it is today. Last years summer hospitality revenue ranked 2nd in the state, just behind Disney. As South Walton is a collection of small towns; unifying and marketing them together as a region have helped give this area a real sense of place. Today Sowal remains the premier online resource and insider’s guide for South Walton. Their site still offers Kurt’s stunning photography as well as videos, live streaming beach cams, events and everything else you can imagine. The forum is still around too - in fact there are now 25,000 active members and a total of nearly a million posts. Theresa now oversees much of the day-to-day operations, freeing Kurt up to do what he loves most - capturing breath-taking moments along our coast. In addition to the founding couple, Lisa Comeau, head of Advertising and several other contributing team members have joined them on their journey. They also host several guest columnists, which range from vacation rental and real estate insiders to a column headed up by a local fishing captain. Although they’ve transformed South Walton’s online community over the last 15 years, their mission is far from over. Their fully revamped website will launch this summer. The new site will enhance what they’ve established and bring more of their striking images to the forefront. They also plan to expand their guides and grow their video content. Sowal has been and will be a indispensable resource for guests and locals alike. We look forward to following along, image by image and story by story.

DOLPHIN SMARTS turtles found in the Gulf Coast – from the loggerhead, green, Kemp’s Ridley to the hawksbill. With a history rich with environmental and scientific contributions, the Gulfarium is one of the leading conservation and preservation agencies on the Gulf Coast. In the early 1950s, a respected marine researcher and graduate of the University of Miami’s Marine Laboratory, J.B. “Brandy” Siebenaler, envisioned a facility that would introduce marine life to guests in a way that no one along the Gulf had previously imagined. In 1954, fifteen scientists from the University of Miami and fifty local residents incorporated the Gulfarium with Siebenaler. Their stroke of genius was to promote the cause of marine science and encourage conservation by entertaining

and introducing millions of guests to the creatures who now have become synonymous with the Emerald Coast. Here, the dolphins clearly demonstrate their keen perception and superior physical agility in a program that serves the dual purpose of entertaining and inspiring guests to care for the welfare of these magnificent creatures. A host of other programs – including a raucous sea lion adventure – provide guests of the Gulfarium a range of interaction. Curator of Mattie’s legacy, Marcia Hull is the CEO of the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation. Working for MKAF was a calling Marcia was happy to answer after a childhood spent immersed in arts and a young life emulating the visionary women pioneers within the artistic community. Today Marcia is, herself, a visionary and leading the celebration of the 20th Anniversary. The Foundation was established in 1995, as a not-for-profit charitable arts organization focusing on the cultural, educational and spiritual beliefs of Mattie Kelly. Initial programs included the Destin Festival of the Arts and Concerts in the Park – both taking place on the grounds of the Kelly Plantation community. Under Marcia’s direction, the organization has grown significantly. Both of the inaugural events continue, however they are at a new location. Set on 52 park-like acres in the heart of town, the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village is the area’s premier open-air venue. In addition to events, MKAF is an advocate for art education. The Foundation inspires and motivates children by funding educational outreach programs in over 57 underserved schools and agencies throughout the region. Their All Kinds of Art program has helped children explore their creative expression while building self-confidence and self-esteem. Marcia Hull
Mattie Kelly
Playing such an integral role in our coastal culture, the arts have always been prevalent throughout Destin and it’s neighboring communities. The pioneering matriarch of art, culture and education in our once sleepy fishing village is the illustrious Mattie Kelly. Arriving with her husband Coleman in 1935, the Kellys found a simple place of unparalleled beauty. They established a wildly successful turpentine farm that ushered in significant revenue for the community. They also launched the Martha-Gene, a predecessor of the private charter fishing fleet for which Destin is now famous. Other business endeavors include Mattie’s formation of Destin’s first radio station. While their businesses helped to fortify Destin in its nascent economic stages, their truest legacy would stem from their philanthropic works. Mattie and Coleman Kelly donated both the land and funds used for Destin Elementary School, Destin’s Airport, and Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village. Mattie’s contributions to Destin’s foundation are incalculable. Her relentless drive to enrich the quality of life in our region knew no political, social or religious limitations. Throughout her life, she ushered in educational, spiritual and cultural opportunities that continue to influence life along the coast.
Mattie Kelly, Marcia Hull and other dedicated, committed individuals have come together to fashion a thriving coastal community that fosters inspiration. Thanks to these visionary women, our area of unparalleled beauty is further ingrained with sophistication and finesse. Wyland catapulted to the position of the world’s foremost oceanic ambassador in 1981. Not afraid to dream big, he created a life-size whale mural in Laguna Beach, California. Simply known as the “Gray Whale and Calf”, this inaugural masterpiece was the first of many to come. Over the following three decades, Wyland completed a total of 100 “Wyland Walls” which span five continents, 17 countries, and 79 cities around the globe (including Destin). The collection is one of the largest art-in-public-places projects in history. It is estimated that more than a billion people a year experience his work first-hand. His very public portrayal of aquatic habitats has been credited for helping reshape attitudes about marine life conservation and an increasing overall appreciation for our oceans and waterways. In addition to these colossal paintings, Wyland has also spread his artistic message though television. He has hosted several programs including, “Wyland’s Ocean World” (Animal Planet), “Wyland: A Brush With Giants” and “Wyland’s Art Studio” (both National Public Television original series). His passion for engaging people through nature-themed art and his efforts to lead an environmentally friendly lifestyle have also developed into strategic alliances with notable organizations including Walt Disney Studios, United Nations Environment Program, and the US Olympic Team (just to name a few). Expanding his mission and assisting children and families in reviving the importance of healthy oceans and waterways, Wyland formed a non-profit organization, the Wyland Foundation. or every great musician, there is a teacher that played a critical role in getting them there. Maybe they introduced them to their first instrument. Or showed them how to get over stage fright. Or maybe they just inspired them to have the confidence to go for it when they were ready to give up. For the students of the Seaside Neighborhood School in South Walton, the teacher behind them is local music legend, Balder Saunders of Dread Clampitt.

Before the albums, music videos, documentaries, tours, and the long-standing gig as the house band at the Red Bar – there was just the music. Initially a bandsman in the United States Marine Corps, Saunders graduated first in his class at the John Phillip Sousa School of Music in Norfolk, Virginia. He had the pleasure of serving in New Orleans where the musical milieu was rich and in Okinawa Japan, where he traveled much of the world. As a member of the Marine’s Jazz Big Band, he played trumpet and sang on certain selections. His most memorable performance while enlisted was

playing for a sold out crowd in a July 4th concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. After 4 years of service he attended Georgia Tech on the GI Bill. Here he played Trumpet in the Georgia Tech Jazz Ensemble which performed during the Super Bowl that year. In 2002, just up the road from the site that was to become the Seaside Neighborhood School, Balder and friend Kyle Ogle created their band Dread Clampitt. Initially playing music on their front porch in Grayton Beach, both sang along as Kyle played the guitar and Balder the Mandolin. Shortly after, Justin Price-Rees joined the band as a vocalist and fiddle player. Sitting in with the trio on
occasion was Elvis Presley’s former bass player and band “Godfather” Duke Bardwell. The last member to join Dread Clampitt was an upright bass player and vocalist, Kenny Oliverio. Their unique sound blends Bluegrass, Blues, Rock & Roll, Louisiana Bayou Funk & Swamp music with a heavy reliance on Jazz rhythms. For their heartfelt and clever lyrics they combine a mixture of humor with a realistic outlook on the world while focusing on the people and places around them. In 2011 Balder Saunders continued his growth as a musician when he accepted a position as a teacher at the Seaside Neighborhood School. This gig gave him an opportunity he is

grateful for, a chance to inspire young musicians who want to be in a band with their peers, playing music they care about. Working hard at school and participating in several performances throughout the year – Saunders enables students to conquer the fear of judgment by their peers all while mastering the craft of musicianship. Although he is fully dedicated to the school, Saunders still rocks on with Dread Clampitt. As a working musician, his teachings definitely carry more weight. Explaining the process to his students, “ This is what bands do. They get together often and create, for each other first. They inspire each other, and lift each other up artistically.” He also shares insight in the many facets of the music business including roles as a

player, singer, songwriter, studio engineer, and record producer. In addition to his experience, a partnership with a local music studio has given students a chance to record their own songs and exposes the process from start to finish. When asked about working in Seaside and throughout South Walton, Saunders replies “This is the most magical, caring, artistic community, filled with all the necessary resources in which to be a music teacher.”

A common problem is to have too much weight on the heels at address. This will cause you to manipulate your putting motion. Set up with your weight on the arches of your feet. This will allow your arms to hang from your shoulders which gives you room to swing your arms underneath your body, therefore, eliminating stroke manipulation. After you establish proper balance on your feet, which allows your arms to hang under your shoulders, position your hands under your shoulder sockets. This position gives you the best chance to swing the putter on the proper path.
The final setup key is the alignment of the eyes. Golf is a target game and it is important that the eyes are in alignment with the object and the target to achieve complete accuracy. Your eye alignment will affect how you see the target and therefore your swing direction. Test to see if your eyes are over the ball by taking your address with a ball in your right hand, hold the ball up to your right eye and release it. Where it hits the ground is where your eyes are positioned.
