ot long ago, I decided the astonishing sugar white sand beaches and luminescent Gulf waters that weave together the fabric of Northwest Florida would forever be my personal piece of paradise. As a world-traveler with a curious nature, staying put in one place never truly appealed to me. That was until I encountered Destin – and soon after, South Walton. These neighboring beach communities are the king and queen of the Emerald Coast.
A Sandestin Life Perfection between the beach and bay Destin is a householdname with generations of beachgoers who’ve made this coast their home away from home. With its origins as a fishing community, this quaint city hosts the largest private charter fishing fleet in the country and due to its easy reach of deep water, has been dubbed “The Luckiest Fishing Village in the World.” In addition to its striking natural beauty and unrivaled deep sea fishing, this “village” offers a plethora of attractions and exciting diversions.
Only moments to the east, snuggled between Destin and Panama City Beach, sits a collection of more than a dozen distinct communities that are known now simply as South Walton. Although the whitesand beach resembles its neighbors, the natural beauty hosted in South Walton is far superior. With nearly half of the land comprised of protected state forest and strict ordinances in place to preserve it, this utopia offers a delicate balance of preservation and sophistication. The world-renowned master planned communities that call South Walton home have rightfully garnered the attentions of architects and artists around the globe. With two equally worthy choices from which to select my permanent address, I set out to experience both first-hand – initially in Destin, at a townhome along Scenic Gulf Drive only steps from the beach, followed by a condo atop of one Destin’s newest high rises. I then trekked to the east and lived in a magnificent beach view home in South Walton’s Grayton Beach.

Selecting between living in Destin and South Walton was not easy. Like a proud parent, I love them both equally. However, living in both was not an option (for now). As my search for a permanent home was drawing to a close, I decided I did indeed want them both and somehow managed to strike the perfect balance. I purchased my home in a community that enhances Destin’s culture yet embraces South Walton sense of community and individuality. Between Destin and what most refer to as South Walton is a microcosm of all of the finest aspects both offer, melded into one extraordinary, meticulously maintained, 2,400 acre resort – the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort. Phenomenally situated and straddling both sides of Emerald Coast Parkway, this gated development offers private access to the Gulf of Mexico, Choctawhatchee Bay, and everything conceivable in between.
A Sandestin Life By electing to call this prestigious resort home, I was instantly granted access to a lifestyle so extraordinary most only indulge in this experience moments at a time. A vacation community at its finest, this friendly “neighborhood” is actually woven together from 36 distinct developments that perfectly complement each other and set the bar by which other Gulf communities measure success. Although places in which to live and vacation vary greatly here, they all share a singular focus – which is a celebration of the good life by the coast. There really is no typical day within these gates, but everyday is indeed precious. Mornings are often spent enjoying a robust breakfast at Another Broken Egg Café. Other days begin with exercise in a variety of ways. A stop at the fitness center is convenient, but the four championship golf courses and world-class tennis center have you working up a sweat in the most pleasant way possible. In addition, abundant trails and paths weave throughout the natural landscapes, and biking is always a magnificent adventure.
Options for lunch are numerous but a meal with a beachfront view is only offered at The Beach House, a re-imaged version of the classic eatery known as Elephant Walk, which has welcomed patrons at Sandestin for generations. Strolling along the beach allows for one to take in the beauty and majesty of the Gulf – perfectly underscoring how a vacation (or a life) at Sandestin is a wise choice. The Resort offers three and a half miles of beach but many owners opt to augment this with a Beach Club Membership. With this, you receive access to a beachfront pool, clubhouse, and restaurant. When looking for a reprieve from the sunshine, the afternoon is an ideal time to explore Grand Boulevard. Here you’ll find top designer brands, local galleries, and a collection of finer restaurants and bars. The newest addition to this high-end retail center is Boulevard 10, a state-of-the-art cinema that features a must-do viewing experience in their Observation Club. You can enjoy a meal, a glass of wine and of course the latest and greatest blockbuster.

A Sandestin Life Another lifestyle center, and one of Destin’s most notable attractions, is the Village of Baytowne Wharf. A rendition of New Orleans’ French Quarter, this walkable village is the main attraction of the resort (second only to the beach) and features a slew of dining and entertainment options as well as boutique shops. (Flip to Page 82 for a complete list of shops)
Baytowne’s Event Plaza offers varied entertainment including live music, theatrical performances and open-air movies. Here you dine and party late into the night in a sophisticated yet casual ambiance. Several of the destinations hosted in Baytowne are bay-front and sitting on their decks sipping tropical drinks is an ideal way to catch the sun as it sets over the Choctawhatchee Bay. Personally, my favorite spot with a front row seat to these epic sunsets is the Marina Bar & Grill. A coveted, nearly secret locale – you’ll find a collection of owners enjoying a quiet spot away from the welcomed tourist crowd. A simple menu with simple drinks, it’s a nice place to slow down and watch the boats roll in as they return with their abundant catch or as new guests arrive to the resort via yacht. This is also the ideal location to
grab a kayak or paddleboard and explore Sandestin’s bay-frontage. Everyday can be an adventure, but several times of year the resort hosts stellar events on a grand scale. Sandestin is home to annual wine, gumbo, and beer festivals of regional renown and during the summer, fireworks are a weekly occurrence. Nearly every night, there’s a party just around the corner… With so much to do and discover, it’s hard to imagine what I personally enjoy most about living on Sandestin. Upon reflection, it would have to be the resort’s ideally crafted family atmosphere. A safe environment that is meticulously maintained, much of the resort is a wholesome, story book version of a small community. Sneaking out to cast a line in one of the many lakes with my son after his homework is finished is a real treat. Walks along the bay or exploring the varied developments are the perfect venues for catching up on the day. Seeing my son learn to surf, paddleboard and play tennis is outrageously rewarding. Heading to the grocery store via golf cart turns a simple chore into a memorable time. I am fortunate to call Sandestin my home, for now and forever. S

GREENMAN’S GARDEN MIKAEL LANDRE Even though to some it may appear that farm-to-table dining is just a recent culinary fad, it’s actually been embraced along the shores of South Walton for over 15 years. Since 1999, pioneer local organic farmer Mikael Landre has been providing some of our most-loved area eateries with the freshest produce possible. From tiny edible flowers to gargantuan heads of cabbage, the crops from his garden have been a staple in local restaurants, with conscious consumers, and at an array of area farmers’ markets. Other presenters at the recent Economic and Housing Forecast Summit were Jessica Dill, a senior economic research analyst for the Center for Real Estate Analytics at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and Gail Psilos, director for Regional Economic Information Network at the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. With a focus on the Southeastern United States as a whole, they reported on a range of factors influencing the overall outlook of our economy. Conservative optimism seemed to be the underlying message and they are anticipating a steady three percent run rate over the next several quarters. Even more encouraging, they indicated that the number of available homes is on the rise throughout the Southeast. Considering these regional statistics, fortunate investors and local property owners can expect to significantly outpace the surrounding areas. Given these economic prognostications from some of the region’s leading authorities, 2015 is shaping up to be an ideal time to purchase real estate in and around Destin. • In a large bowl, combine pineapple, oranges, 1 tbs taco seasoning, 1 tbs oj concentrate, 1 tbs lime juice, jalapeno pepper & cilantro. Cover & refrigerate. • Place fish in an ungreased shallow 2-qt. baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the remaining oj concentrate, lime juice and taco seasoning. Pour over fish; toss gently to coat. Cover and bake at 375° for 12-16 minutes or until fish flakes easily with a fork. • Place a spoonful of the fish mixture down the center of each tortilla. Top with cabbage and pineapple salsa; roll up. Garnish with lime wedges.

This wildly successful craftsman may be most notable for his surreal seascapes that capture South Walton’s beauty one canvas at a time. Justin’s career and subject matter have evolved over time but no transformation has been as bold as his most recent. Justin is entering a new era of excellence and creating individual pieces that the contemporary art world better get ready for.

sat down recently with Justin to talk about life as an artist, his new contemporary direction, and his inspiration. Madra McDonald
Q. Can you elaborate on your recent move to enhance your gallery operation and bold new style? A.
I made the decision last fall that this would be the year that I push myself to do what I really want. For some time, I’ve felt like I have been going against the grain of my own bones… my own soul. Having a gallery in Seaside was a great opportunity, and I’m glad we were there for the time. The decision to simplify my operation stems from the desire to do more of what I want to do. Not from a selfish place, but from a purely creative place. I want to delve deeper and create works that mean something beautiful, beyond just making something fashionable or decorative.
Q. How will your new sculptural direction dovetail from your landscapes? A.
The reality is I’m still going to be painting my sunflowers, poppies, landscapes and nests – I will just be painting fewer of them so I can devote more time to my contemporary works. Like life, art is always changing, and I’m evolving as an artist and I want to follow that drive and see where it leads me.
Q. You’ve evolved from sculpting with paint to sculpting with metal. Where did that inspiration come from? A.
I used to build furniture, and I’ve always loved building with my hands. I wanted to create something that was freestanding, with less boundaries. I’ve never welded before, so I bought a welding kit and some supplies on Amazon and watched a few YouTube videos on welding technique. “Stag” – currently on display at Oak Nashville – was my first welded steel sculpture. It was in that moment I realized I wanted to build something that could tell a story.
Q. Where do you feel most inspired?
A. Probably alone in nature. It’s where my mind is most settled. And I always feel inspired when I travel to new places. Q. Do you have a particular memory with a customer/collector that stands apart? A.
There are so many. Back when I was going through a deeply emotional period in my life, I did my first series of black/white/red paintings. One of them was a super minimalist 4X8 of a branch upside down with birds and eggs falling out of it. A man walked into the gallery and totally related to it and bought it that day. It was one of the first times someone bought a painting that made them feel something vs. just for the aesthetic of it.
Q. You’ve made 30A/South Walton home since 1986. What do you love about the area? A.
I love that I live in a place that borders a forest and a big body of water, with areas to escape in nature. It’s been a great place to raise my family. I wish the lifestyle offered more culture but I think it’s better than most places. It’s kind of bittersweet sometimes, but I feel lucky.
Q. What one thing do you want to communicate to your audience this year? A.

There is an evolution and change happening in my work. It’s inevitable in order for me to sustain and be happy in my work and what I do.

ou have discovered the Emerald Coast. How could you not? The natural beauty of our shoreline calls out to anyone who loves the outdoors. Now it’s time to consider jumping in with both feet! Any true local will tell you that our emerald green water is best experienced through complete immersion. It’s exhilarating to feel the cool water on your face, taste the sea salt and to actually swim among the fish, dolphins and sea turtles. Of course you can book a tour, charter a boat or watch a show. You could even buy some binoculars and scout from a balcony but until you are actually immersed in our waters, you are truly only dipping your toes in the beautiful waters of the Emerald Coast. Watch any child when they first arrive to our area. What do they immediately want to do when they first see the Gulf? Get in, of course! And, hands down, the best way is to get on a board and surf! Our coast is unique in many ways. The same seafloor feature that helps keep our waters clear and makes our fishing fantastic also provides excellent waves for surfing. Compared to most Gulf Coast beaches, the Northern Florida panhandle seafloor quickly transitions to deeper water just a few hundred yards off our shoreline. This drop allows sand and sediment to filter after storms, contributes to the emerald clarity, and also prevents waves from breaking too early and dissipating far offshore. Thanks to this particular feature, there is a thriving local surf culture.

Look beyond the typical souvenir t-shirt shops and you will find surf shops with staff who actually surf! Places like Fluid in Ft. Walton Beach, Innerlight in Destin and YOLO in Santa Rosa Beach. Sure, they can still sell you a cool shirt or the best board shorts but they can also help you pick out the right surfboard, set you up with lessons or give you tips on when and where to catch a wave. Some of the best ways to get started surfing are with lessons through our local surf schools. Having a pro teach you a few pointers can speed up the surf learning curve by years. Many, like myself, learned the old fashioned way with lots of trial and error. While falling off a surfboard is still plenty of fun, a surfing lesson can get you consistently riding waves in just a few sessions. For the local kids in our area, there are even beginner surf contests that allow parents to push their little “groms” into waves. (Grom is short for grommet – which is what we call young surfers). The annual Surfrider Foundation Kid’s Surf Classic runs every summer (usually June, as part of the International Surfing Day celebration). I’m the Chairman of our local Surfrider chapter. We take great pride in creating a fun and safe event for kids to experience surfing. At Surfrider, we know that when kids love the beach, they will grow up protecting it. We also teach them the importance of keeping the beaches clean through volunteer beach cleanups and in-school presentations. Some local schools like the Ohana Institute and Seaside Neighborhood School even have surfing as an elective class!

There’s also the annual Billabong Grom Comp. Once you get more surfing experience, there is a local chapter of the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA). Local ESA champions, both youth and adult, go on to compete for State, Regional and National honors. Trophies aside, the real allure of surfing is the joy experienced on every ride. Florida is known by many names, yet recently it’s been given another – Nashville South. Music flows along our shores from town to town and acts as a soundtrack for the creation of lasting memories. Local and national recording artists alike choose to call our shores home and for very good reason. World-class musical events and an eclectic mix of quaint venues make this place something truly special.
With music woven into the fabric of our coastal culture, it only makes sense that Destin & South Walton are emerging as THE beach scene for music in the Southeast. With easy access from Music City, some serious players have been making some serious moves. Although our friends from the North are influencing what we are listening to, one local player has just upped the ante.
Destin natives Chris Taylor and his wife Gileah have just brought to life what was once only a dream – a brand new, full-production music studio in South Walton that is already creating buzz in the industry. No stranger to recording, the Taylors have both been immersed in the music world for 20 years. Chris was signed to EMI in 2008 and recorded an album with one of Nashville’s most
dynamic songwriters, producers and mix engineers - Allen Salmon. Their collaboration grew into a lasting friendship, which ultimately led to Salmon acting as a consultant in the creation of the studio. Under Taylor and Salmon’s direction and backed by Ocean Reef (a local innovative vacation rental management and real estate

BEATS company) the development began in late 2014. Their mission: create a place to record music and experiment with sound without leaving the beach. The idea was especially attractive because it eliminated the need for travel to Nashville as they had in the past to achieve high-quality recordings. The arrangement with Ocean Reef was ideal since the well-established organization is always looking to expand their marketing presence in creative ways. Completed in December, SoHo transplant and producer extraordinaire, Jeremy Griffith was the first to utilize the creative space. While the paint still dried, Brooklyn, New York group Arc + Stones recorded their next EP. Their production was quickly followed by an up-and-coming act from just up the road in Panama City known as My Fever.
This premier audio destination will remain a private space solely dedicated to the production of invited artists/producers, writer’s workshops and as a creative space for its parent company – Ocean Reef. Currently, Ocean Reef uses the Studio to create property videos and commercials. Future plans include the release of a vacation podcast and they are in the early stages of working with 30A Radio to develop an ongoing radio show. Chris and Gileah have just begun recording their new album under their new band name, Bravery House. When reflecting upon the studio, Gileah put it best,“This space is already beyond what we ever hoped for. We love the chance to be creative by day for Ocean Reef and creative by night for our own music.”

POSTURE:
Posture positions will have a tremendous effect on how a player swings. Correct posture positions are based on the angles of the body and balance points on the feet. Think of an athletic set up where you feel a balance between your upper body spine tilt and your knee flex. Feet should be shoulder width apart with the weight evenly balanced from left to right and toe to heel. Once you create the posture and balance positions, allow your arms to hang from your shoulders, grip the club and then set to the golf ball. The posture positions and the length of the club dictates your distance from the ball at address.
