With summer now well and truly here, I can’t believe we’re already halfway through the year! June always feels like the month when I’m waiting for things to happen, such as the school holidays starting, or going on our family holiday – but this year I’m doing things a little differently. After cancelling/rescheduling so many trips and celebrations, I’ve decided to head off on an actual plane (the first Karen in nearly three years) with my girlfriends. So I’ll be popping this summer issue into my suitcase, and once I’ve finished reading it, ‘leave’ it round the pool for others to enjoy – particularly this month’s real homes, which are brimming with great ideas. I’ve fallen in love with bold wallpaper again thanks to Maria Greener (p42) and Derya Berber’s clever decorating schemes (p116). And there’s plenty of inspiration for al fresco spaces too, with our relaxing Coastal Retreat feature (p23) and 5 Steps to outdoor living (p89). What’s more, you can enjoy a free day out on us at The Cake & Bake Show (p86). Happy days! Update your garden and light up summer nights with our pick of PO USFOE IFBUFST BOE ÎSFQJUT

The experts at the Lawn Association reveal the best ways for a lush-looking lawn all year round: 1. Leave grass longer in hot weather. It forms a canopy over the soil, so raising the height of your mower blades can help prevent sun damage. 2. Sharpen mower blades regularly, as a blunt blade tears rather than cuts grass, which prevents it making the best use of both food and water. 3. Use an organic lawn feed, such as True Grass, £16.99, truefertiliser.co.uk. Apply to the surface and let the rain soak it in. 4. Start a regular watering routine while your lawn is still green – evenings after 8pm are best. Visit lawnassociation.org.uk for more info.

GARDEN TOMATO TART If you love delicious plantbased recipes, this easy-sharing tart from Katy Beskow’s new book Vegan BBQ (£16.99, Quadrille) tastes as fantastic as it looks… 1. Unroll a 320g sheet of readyrolled puff pastry onto a lined baking tray, then fold in edges by 2cm all round to create a border. 2. Rub a bruised garlic clove over the centre of the pastry, then discard. Prick the centre of the pastry with a fork a few times. 3. Place four large sliced & six small whole tomatoes in a mix of colours (green, yellow and red) on another baking tray and drizzle with olive oil. 4. Place both trays in a pre-heated oven at 200°C/400°F/Gas mark 6 for 12-15 mins until the pastry is risen and golden. 5. Remove both baking trays from the oven. If the centre of the pastry has risen up in places, push it down gently with a fork. Lay the tomatoes onto the pastry. 6. 6FDWWHU ZLWK IUHVK ƓQHO\ FKRSSHG dill, a pinch of sea salt and some QDVWXUWLXP OHDYHV DQG ŴRZHUV LI \RX have them. Serve warm or cold.

T

he realisation they were outgrowing their threebedroom house was what kick-started Maria and Conrad Greener’s search for a new family home. Wanting to stay in the same area of Bristol, the couple put extra space at the top of their priority list, so when a Victorian terrace with a large, open-plan kitchen-diner and ready-converted loft came on the market, they felt confident it would be just what they were looking for. ‘I love period character, and I could see that the bones were good,’ recalls Maria. ‘The garden was lovely and the interior was well finished, which was ideal as we didn’t want a big renovation project. However, the rooms were mostly beige, there was very little storage, and the house just didn’t flow well.’ Both creative and hands-on people, the couple were keen to make their mark on their new home without overspending, so used magazines, Pinterest and Instagram as go-tos for interiors JULY 2022 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 45

After experimenting with the dark, dramatic palettes that initially appealed to her, Maria found herself reverting to a lighter look, better suited to the changing needs of a busy family with teenagers. ‘I like a calm, classic feel, but with quirky touches that reflect us, and I’ve learned through trial and error that I’m most comfortable with pale neutrals,’ she says. ‘They’re the ideal backdrop for ornaments and pictures, and I’ve always loved having lots of artwork and interesting accessories on show.’ The kitchen-diner, which opens out to the garden, is the natural hub of family life, and has undergone substantial but cost-effective changes. Having painted the walls almost black to start with, Maria changed them back to off-white, which took about five coats of paint to cover she admits. ‘But I saved money by using inexpensive magnolia emulsion as a base for my final shade.’

The high-gloss white fitted kitchen units they’d inherited were not to Maria’s taste, but as she couldn’t justify the cost of replacing them, a local specialist spray-painted them – as well as a central island with breakfast bar that Conrad constructed out of Ikea carcasses – in a grey palette. The dining table and bench, which Conrad made from reclaimed oak boards for their previous home, work well in the narrow space, and a large gallery wall now defines the dining zone and brings it to life. ‘We had a sofa and TV here at first as well as the table,’ says Maria. ‘The new layout works much better as it’s not so cramped, and we’ve got a proper place now for family meals and entertaining.’ The fresh, neutral scheme now runs through the whole house, with Maria layering colour and pattern, and creating areas for display to give each room its own character. front of the house, the living room has a cosy ambience, with one end turned into a laidback ‘den.’ The couple adapted a corner sofa that they already had to fit, and Conrad put together floor-to-ceiling book storage, inspired by a colourcoordinated scheme Maria saw on Pinterest. ‘We had a pool table here but it wasn’t really used, so now the children hang out here with friends or play computer games, and we can all watch a film together,’ she says. ‘The bookcases are quite

a feature, and the colour grouping keeps a big assortment of books looking tidy.’ Maria added two retro-inspired armchairs to their sofa in the main part of the room, which with its period fireplace and woodburner has a more traditional, grown-up vibe. In the alcoves, Conrad fitted chunky open shelving and Maria went with a floral wallpaper on the chimney breast. ‘I did choose quite an expensive design, but I only needed a small amount to create an eye-catching feature,’ she says.

Wallpaper is the key decorative feature of the couple’s loft bedroom too, which has an ensuite shower room and balcony-style windows overlooking the park. Getting the best from the room took some thought, as there was no storage, a steeply sloping ceiling, and a small chimney breast protruding from the one wall, which Conrad boxed around to make wider. ‘That did eat into the room, but created the extra wall space we needed for the bed,’ says Maria. ‘Having the wallpaper behind us means it has visual impact,

but isn’t a distraction when we want to relax.’ The couple then installed large, mirrored wardrobes with space-saving sliding doors where the ceiling is highest, and fitted wardrobes into the alcoves of the guest bedroom, too. Walls and woodwork painted in the same soft neutral lend this room, which doubles as Maria’s office, a calming feel. ‘All of our spaces work really hard, and we’ve kept things flexible so there’s scope to adapt the house as the children get older,’ says Maria. ‘Our home feels comfy and inviting, and definitely works for us.’

Main bedroom A striking folk-inspired wallpaper from Boråstapeter is the focal point of this loft space, and Maria has pulled out the rust colour within it as an accent for accessories. Modern black wall lights from Wayfair add an understated industrial edge and a Habitat drawer unit matches the wood bed

ituated in a quiet suburban street in south-west London, the front of this 1930s semi-detached house gently hints at the refreshingly unexpected renovation within. ‘My previous home was a 19th-century Grade ll-Listed house, which was incredibly satisfying to renovate,’ explains homeowner Lucy Abercrombie. ‘But over the last few years, I found that my priorities had begun to change. I wanted my surroundings to reflect the way I wanted to live: comfortably, but with minimal fuss and clutter – and when the time was right to move, I was keen that my new home should express that. The

aim was to create a space that was easy to live in by myself, but adaptable enough to accommodate visiting family and friends.’ Nevertheless, despite this renewed sense of direction, it took some vision to appreciate how the modest three-bedroom property that Lucy went to view in the spring of 2018 could be overhauled. Tired and dated with a typical layout for houses of that era, it also had a dilapidated garage at the end of a small garden. But Lucy was not deterred. ‘It ticked all of my boxes in terms of location and budget, and I was confident that with a little imagination and clever planning, the house could be transformed.’

Lucy didn’t, however, rush the renovation process. ‘I lived here for a year before work officially started, but I did strip out all the old fixtures and fittings, and painted everything white straight away,’ she explains. ‘Without all the distractions, the house became a blank canvas, and it really helped me to work out how the layout should flow, and what could ultimately be achieved.’ Although brimming with ideas, Lucy still felt it wise to seek expert help to ensure that every aspect of the top-to-toe renovation was correctly considered and addressed. ‘For the first time ever, I worked with an

architect – Sam Kamleh from Architecture:WK – which proved to be a good move,’ she says. ‘Not only did Sam bring my plan to life in very practical, sustainable ways, but she also suggested design ideas and treatments that would make the most of the space available, some of which I hadn’t even thought of.’ The transformation that began the following summer was dramatic. On the ground floor, all the dividing walls were removed, and an extension with a vast skylight and full-length glass doors constructed at the back to create a generous open-plan space. To maintain the minimal feel, clever storage has been subtly incorporated: the boiler and washing machine, for instance, are hidden behind unobtrusive ply doors in the main living space, as is a neat downstairs cloakroom. ‘These decisions made it clear that not everything has to be where you might usually expect it,’ explains Lucy. ‘You have to think differently when you live like this.’ The first floor was overhauled to create two guest rooms, a family bathroom and a compact study area tucked to the side of an additional staircase. This in turn winds up to the loft conversion, which incorporates a good-sized, light-filled bedroom and shower room. There were floral wallpapers, pink carpets and a tiny, dark kitchen.’ The house had an old-fashioned, disjointed layout, with the living, family and dining rooms all separate, and the kitchen towards the back of the property was cramped and dingy, with tired cream units and a lino floor. We carried on using the old kitchen while the work was done, but there were wires and pipes everywhere, and a lot of dust and mess. With a toddler and a tiny baby, things were pretty stressful, but I wouldn’t have moved out again. I loved watching the new space coming together, plus we saved money on renting.’ The family did not get to enjoy their new open-plan lifestyle for long before James’s work took them abroad again, this time for six years, and when they returned it was as a family of five, including their second daughter Coco. Finally, with no more moves planned, Suzie could put down roots and pick up where she’d left off, working through the house room by room. The tiny former kitchen is now a study, and although the main living space is open plan, she kept the separate sitting room. ‘We use it as another living room,’ Suzie says. ‘It’s a lovely, peaceful spot to retreat to for reading or a film night.’ JULY 2022 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 73

One of the most ambitious tasks was converting the loft, which has been transformed into a guest bedroom with a small en suite. The work took several months, and was less than straightforward, partly because the new staircase could only be accommodated by altering the couple’s own en suite. ‘It was far more disruptive than I’d expected, but worth it to get so much from our space,’ says Suzie. In more recent years, Suzie has also had a rethink about the kitchen, which was among the first major projects done in the house. With units all along one 74 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM JULY 2022

wall, she was finding it too spread-out and bigger than they really needed. So several cabinets were taken out and the kitchen remodelled into a more compact, U-shape style, which left room for a dining table. ‘It all flows much better now, and suits how we live as a family,’ says Suzie. ‘It was quite an expensive alteration, but I’m glad I bit the bullet and made those changes, rather than living with a layout that wasn’t really working anymore.’ For Suzie, budgeting has been one of the biggest challenges, as she soon discovered that building work would often cost more than anticipated. were also both keen to invest in the things they use every day, like quality floorings and well-made bathroom fittings. That meant shopping around for furniture and accessories, which in turn led Suzie to look at vintage and secondhand items. ‘They can be great value, and I love interesting, characterful things, so it’s a fantastic way to find one-off pieces,’ she says. ‘Ebay is a good source, and antiques fairs are always exciting because you just don’t know what you might come across.’ Although vintage is a big element of Suzie’s interiors style, her taste is definitely eclectic, and she likes plenty of variety and contrasting looks. Soft furnishings such as beds, sofas or rugs are nearly always bought new, while accessories like mirrors, tables, cabinets or lighting could be design classics, high-street finds, or a secondhand item from any era. and lively, Suzie often adds new pieces, or moves items around. And although she loves colour, and has one or two patterned wallpapers, most walls are plain white, which helps keep the rooms flexible and easy to rearrange – plus provides a blank canvas for some touches of humour, too. ‘Pieces like the faux zebra’s head and my crazy boatshaped cocktail bar always get a lot of comments, and everyone enjoys the secret door to the study, concealed in the bookshelves,’ says Suzie. ‘It’s impossible to define my style, but I don’t mind where each piece goes, or what it sits next to. I love everything in my house and although I didn’t originally foresee that we’d stay long term, this has definitely become our forever home.’

En suite Suzie and James’s en suite was formed from a tiny bedroom, and revamped later to accommodate a new staircase up to the loft, where tKH VKRZHU ƓWV neatly underneath. The tiles are from Topps Tiles, and a vivid yellow glass splashback adds a pop of colour

Main bedroom The eclectic feel of the couple’s room demonstrates Suzie’s relaxed approach to mixing patterns – and Matthew Williamson’s shimmering Arini wallpaper makes an eye-catching feature. ‘I just fell in love with the design, and it works well behind the bed as it’s not distracting,’ says Suzie

CONTEMPORARY COOL The blue-grey hues of Millboard’s Enhanced Grain Brushed Basalt decking offer a painted-wood look

E

xpertly designed to mirror the authentic appearance of timber, Millboard decking removes all the typical drawbacks a wooden deck brings. Say goodbye to sanding, staining or oiling decking boards – the clever surface of the boards are low maintenance, only requiring occasional cleaning around twice a year. The high-grip surface is also slip resistant and much safer than wood, especially in wet weather. Each board has been moulded from natural oak to replicate the unique grain patterns, detail and natural imperfections evident in genuine timber boards. There are two finishes to choose

WASHED EFFECT Millboard’s Enhanced Grain Limed Oak is perfect for sunny spots

from – Enhanced Grain, which has a smooth, sleek texture for a contemporary finish, and Weathered Oak, which features deeper grains to create a wonderfully rustic look and feel. What’s more, the Weathered Oak collection is moulded

from oak boards that are over a century old, imbuing the boards with a satisfying sense of history and an immediate aged appearance for a lived-in finish. Each board is then hand-tinted to mimic the unique colours and tones found in each piece of timber. The stunning grain patterns then elevate the colour to look lighter or darker, depending on the angle you are viewing the board, creating the wood-look finish that Millboard is known and loved for. Available in 11 shades and two finishes, find decking to suit your garden or home, whether it’s a period property or modern new build.

WHAT DIDN’T YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR ORIGINAL GARDEN? When we bought our 1930s house, the garden was unimaginative and overgrown, with straight line borders and large conifer trees in the rear third, which blocked off that entire section. HOW DID YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE SPACE? As an interior designer, I decided to approach the garden in the same way

as I would a home design. We had a goodsized space and I wanted to divide it into separate zones. At the back, there was already a garden room and a sheltered space that gets the best of the late afternoon sunshine, so we decided to make this an outdoor kitchen, dining and living area. There’s also a chill-out space with a fire pit where the teenagers can hang out. The final area, closest to the house, is great for morning coffee and has a soft lawn that is wonderful to lie out on in the summer.

I was worried about the proximity of the multi-stem Amelanchier tree, which is just a metre from the house. It felt too close and I thought it might block the light, but it’s just beautiful and really adds interest, with

wonderful blossom in the spring and stunning leaves in the autumn. HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW IT’S ALL FINISHED? I am amazed at how our garden looks all year round. When the flowers die back, the structural evergreen plants provide colour and interest through winter. It’s now a multifunctional space that’s great for socialising. SHOW YOUR COLOURS ‘Nowadays, you can colourmatch almost everything in the home – from décor and furnishings to appliances, and even your window frames – inside and out,’ explains Crittall Windows’ managing director Russell Ager. ‘With the modern take on the retro look now very much in vogue, steel windows are enjoying a resurgence in

rom interior designers to homedécor influencers, those in the know agree that bright retro colours including sky blues, natural greens, purple-blue hues, vibrant yellows and sultry black will make up the colour palette for contemporary schemes this year. What’s more, the trend for homeowners to be more adventurous with window shapes and door styles mean the ‘eyes’ of the home are getting the attention they deserve, while reflecting their own individual style from the outside. Curves and rounded shapes are back – with handcrafted authenticity the buzz words. So, if you’re considering a new look, whether a window, external door or internal screen, you no longer have to opt for the ubiquitous rectangular white or black, as steel-framed windows and doors with arches and sweeping curves are the on-trend choice. Want to make a style statement or maximise the view from your property to bring the outside in? Pioneers of steel-frame window manufacture for over 170 years, Crittall has a design for every style of home, from a panoramic or ‘wide-view’ to a floorto-ceiling or Sixties-style picture window. If you have a traditional or period property, echo the past with gothic and lancet-shaped windows or heritage-style oriel bay and bow windows, ‘bulls-eye’ panes and rondels.

he rural Gloucestershire home of Claire Smith-Corns, her husband Richard and young sons Nate and Seth, is a newly converted barn that was originally part of an old dairy farm that Claire used to ride through on her horse. When the barn came onto the market, the couple drew up plans for the steel-framed conversion themselves, with Richard doing all of the building. They also had a clear vision for the open-plan kitchendining area, with something sleek and modern in mind. But things changed as the barn conversion evolved. ‘It’s actually the third time we’ve used Wren, and we were going to go for a dark, contemporary style we’d seen before,’ explains Claire. ‘But once we went into the Gloucester showroom and saw the more traditional Shaker style, we knew that was the one.’ Working with their Wren designer Craig, Claire and Richard were able to finalise the layout, and iron out some of the more practical details. ‘Craig was great,

and really helped us maximise storage space,’ says Claire. ‘He suggested a diagonal corner tower unit and the large storage drawers, which means we can easily keep everything neat and organised.’ The couple chose kitchen units in Wren’s Infinity Plus Shaker Forest Alchemy Grain and Shadow Grain, complemented by aged brass handles. The appliances are a combination of Neff and Bosch. When it came to installation, Richard was able to fit the kitchen himself. ‘We were very satisfied with the service Wren provided, and everything came exactly when it was supposed to,’ says Claire. ‘We’ve even recommended them to my sister.’ Claire is the main cook in the house and loves to prepare food while the kids sit around the island – and they’re big on entertaining, too. ‘We often have friends and family over during the summer,’ she says. ‘There’s nothing nicer than opening the double doors that lead onto the patio and firing up the barbecue.’
