hen our children were young, we had a static caravan on the Norfolk coast. It was our bolthole, a home on wheels for weekends and school holidays. Welly-clad or barefoot, we’d spend every day there on the beach. The kids, oblivious to the weather, trundled around with buckets in hand, sifting through the sand in search of pretty shells, glistening pebbles and sea glass. Only the best pieces made their way back to the caravan, where the children would spend hours creating displays in small piles, on any available shelf. Reluctantly, we sold our caravan a decade or so ago (the children all grown up) and, at the time, I returned most of our treasure to the beach. But I couldn’t resist hanging on to a couple of special stones and shells that now sit in our bathroom – a poignant reminder of those carefree days on the coast. :LWK VXPPHU ĠUPO\ KHUH RXU $XJXVW LVVXH LV GHGLFDWHG WR FRDVWDO OLYLQJ with ideas to encourage you to bring the seaside look into your own home. MODULAR KITCHENS
As the way we use our homes changes, flexible solutions – such as modular units that can be adapted to create a kitchen that suits you – are becoming more popular. Available in pre-made parts, these separate components can be placed, shuffled and even relocated to best suit your property and life – a good choice for those who want to take everything but the kitchen sink when they move. Ikea offers a budget-friendly selection of cabinets, countertops, fittings and shelves that can be arranged in any formation so you can live a little more freely.

Nice & easy Nothing says summer like being by the sea, and the good news is, with a few simple tweaks, it’s easy to bring that feelgood factor into your home, wherever you live. A SPACE TO ESCAPE
Turn an unused corner into your own personal retreat. White tongue-and-groove wall panelling brings a beach hut vibe, and it’s the perfect backdrop to a pared-back colour palette and simple linens. FRAME THE VIEW
We all need a spot where we can enjoy some time out, and a coastal outlook is top of the wishlist. But no view (the case for most of us), no problem. SEA-INSPIRED SANCTUARY It doesn’t take much to create a chilled-out coastal bathroom. Opting for a pretty aqua shade on the bath or adding rustic wooden brushes and racks are easy tweaks. INTRODUCE UPLIFTING
nautical colours
PHOTOGRAPH DAVID BRITTAIN STYLING HANNAH DEACON
With the power to liven up any space, red, white and blue is a bracing sea-salt combo. For a contemporary look, make white your go-to backdrop and build out from there. A paint shade with notes of grey will feel suitably coastal on walls – chart your course towards theMono Tones collection, designed by House Beautiful in collaboration with Homebase, for some great options. When choosing accessories, avoid having just one shade of blue, as this can feel cold – instead, take your colour cues from water, as natural shades ranging from palest aqua to deepest navy work particularly well together. And a bold red is a must – identify a clean, crisp shade (more tomato than burgundy) and stick to it.

MAKE AN IMPACT WITH
maritime motifs
PHOTOGRAPH TIM YOUNG STYLING LORRAINE DAWKINS
Pattern can make a room feel smart and uniform, but also offers the opportunity for whimsy and creativity. Not sure where to start? Wave, shell and coral motifs will bring more than a sense of coastal charm. Try mixing up scale for these prints, as they can look intricately decorative when small (such as on fabrics), and much more graphic when blown up (as wall coverings, for example, or on a cushion). Prints on a dark blue, bright white or bold red base tend to have a tailored look, while those on slubbier, more muted backdrops will look rustic and feel more relaxed. Team these marine motifs with the humble stripe, which takes on a seafaring quality in red and blue.

T
he colour of swimming pools and tropical seas, turquoise says summer like no other hue. The instant I see it, I’m transported to warmer climes, with waves lapping onto powder-white sands, coconut cocktails and a rope hammock for good measure. It really is the most magical and luminous shade. Sitting between blue and green on the colour wheel, it harnesses all the cool, calm associations of blue with the feelgood harmony of green. If you want to capture some of its magic in your own home, it makes the ideal decorating colour. I’ve recently painted my bedroom walls turquoise and am thrilled with the results. While the most popular colours for restful spaces may be more neutral (obviously that’ll never work for me), the properties of turquoise make it versatile enough to create different moods. I find it soothing and restful at night – taking a dive into the warm, comforting waters of turquoise as I drift off to sleep – but just perky enough in the morning, with a fresh feel that helps get me going and start my day full of positivity. It can work in any room of the house. In a dark, north-facing space, it can bring some pep and luminosity, yet equally it can balance the warm yellow light of a sunny area. And it looks crisp and elegant partnered with soft whites and washed linens, bringing to mind a Victorian clapboard villa on the white sands of some faraway Caribbean island. But you can also take it up a step, partnering it with a Cuban colour palette of hot pinks and sunshine yellows. Turquoise is an obvious choice for the bathroom. It looks fresh and clean partnered with white, crisp with chrome and lavish next to brass taps. I’m reminded of Turkish bath houses and Moroccan riads. Yet again being transported to exotic locations, such is the power of turquoise!

WHY WE LOVE IT Renowned for its popularity in the cafés and outdoor eateries that line the banks of the Seine, the bistro set is quintessentially French. Created in the same year as the Eiffel Tower, it is reflective of the vogue for metalwork design that took place in the country throughout the 19th century. The success of the collapsible tables and chairs was immediate, and little has changed from Leclerc’s original design. Today, the set is produced in its most definitive form by outdoor furniture brand Fermob, which sells its Collection Bistro pieces individually. Stylish but so simple, the instantly recognisable
tables and chairs are as dependable a choice of garden furniture as you will find, and evoke a sense of casual French cool wherever they’re placed.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT FOR EVER A bistro set makes the ideal perch for morning coffee, a casual lunch or drinks à deux come cocktail hour, and, thanks to its trim proportions, the set works just as perfectly on a petite balcony as it does in the corner of a larger outside space. While Fermob has made only very slight functional tweaks to the original design, it has enthusiastically expanded the range into a rainbow of colours. Now available in 23 shades, from classic Liquorice black through to uplifting Honey yellow and eye-catching Pink Praline, the bistro set has the power to brighten up even the most shaded spots of your garden. While other brands make their own versions, Fermob’s table and chairs are the best, and feature durable varnished steel and a UV-resistant lacquer to make sure they stay in tip-top condition for years to come. rom her Paris office, interior designer Nancy Geernaert works with clients all over Europe. Whatever time she has left is divided between Belgium and Casa Forada in Ibiza – a long-term rental from a family who have owned the house for generations. Nancy was selected over other more famous prospective tenants because the owners trusted her to care for their historic home and enhance its beauty. This she has done by carefully adding her own touch to the property, which had already been refurbished by the cousins who had inherited it from their grandparents. Now it reflects both her style and the work that has gone into it over the generations. ‘The only big structural addition has been a patio,’ says Nancy. ‘The refurbishment has been done so well that you can feel the touch of the people who built it. I wanted to respect the house’s DNA and original features by only using natural materials such as limestone, the local piedra alemana stone and sabina wood for the ceilings, and avoiding anything plastic or artificial. For the outdoor furniture, and wherever I couldn’t find a vintage option, I sourced pieces at Tine K Home as they are well made with respect for nature.’ The sense of craftsmanship and the love that’s gone into every nook and cranny of the house were the main reasons why, after years of searching, Nancy instantly knew she’d found her dream Ibizan home. ‘I also loved the amazing views and close connection to nature and the changing seasons,’ she recalls, describing vividly the white and soft pink of the almond trees in bloom at the beginning of the year, the ground bursting with yellow flowers and wild herbs in spring, and the bright red of the dry summer soil. ‘Ibiza is gentle, authentic and relaxing in the winter and energetic in the summer – but always easygoing.’ Set within a rich agricultural landscape, surrounded by fruit trees and with valleys and beaches nearby, the property’s location was a real draw for Nancy. ‘It’s the perfect house, peaceful and quiet,’ she says. ‘You 66 housebeautiful.com/uk

It’s away from the crowds yet close to civilisation.’ The finca is also spacious enough for her to host all her friends, her three adult children, who live in different countries, and their friends. Full of rural charm, the house features simple lines, whitewashed walls and rustic stone and wood, yet at the same time there’s a feeling of understated luxury that ensures it’s the perfect place to chill and make the most of the sunny weather. ‘In Ibiza, it’s all about not controlling too much, so I’ve chosen mostly vintage and handmade pieces and all natural colours and materials, such as wood and linen,’ explains Nancy. Although Nancy enjoys filling the house with guests – when the long, shaded dinner tables come alive with food and laughter – she’s equally happy when she and her husband have the place to themselves, or even when she’s there on her own while working with clients on the island. ‘It’s always nice to be here,’ she says. ‘And I’m never completely alone: I have Mimo the cat, which kept visiting and eventually moved in.’ Nancy has created an easygoing vibe with her exquisite style, mixing cosy, cool and eclectic. As an interior designer, she has understood the art of respecting the energy and heritage of a much-loved family home, preserving its unique history while continuing to build new memories.

A
rtist Penny Hamblin’s plan to downsize from the Victorian London townhouse she’d called home for the past 20 years was derailed when a friend suggested she build a new property with sea views. Enthused by the idea, she found a site that came with planning permission and had already been cleared – the previous owner having removed an old bungalow that had come to the end of its shelf life. The proposed scheme, however, was more contemporary than Penny wanted. ‘The original design had a lot more glazing than I have now,’ she explains. Fortunately, work to improve a house on the same street had recently been completed by architects Hatch & Mason, so Penny approached them with the existing plans and asked the team if they’d be able to help. ‘It turned out to be a good partnership. On my own I’d have probably designed an east coast Hamptons-style property that wouldn’t have allowed for the same amount of light,’ says Penny. As she’d be undertaking a completely new build, Penny felt it only right to construct something sustainable and futureproof. Plans for a home that would fit into the landscape and around her own needs were drawn up and within six months a prefabricated structure was ready for assembly on site. The timber walls came packed with insulation and were fitted together to create an airtight seal to help keep internal spaces warm in winter and cool in summer. But while Penny was keen on building a green and accessible home, she says: ‘I could never see myself living in a minimalist modern house; I had to have a few quirks.’ One of these is a concealed lift that provides access from the ground floor, which houses bedrooms, and comes out through a kitchen cupboard on the first floor which, unexpectedly, hosts the main living, kitchen and dining area. ‘The view is from the first floor, so it made sense to have an upside-down house,’ explains Penny. ‘I still come up the stairs and gasp because the view is breathtaking.’ Another clever addition is equally fantastical. ‘I used to work in publishing and I always had access to lots of books, so I wanted to have a library area. It’s one of the most tranquil spaces in the house,’ adds

DINING AREA Touches of black help create an elegant formal dining space, with the radiator and chairs making a strong statement. The chairs – bought in Jersey in the early 1990s – were from Penny’s parents
Penny. ‘The bookshelf opens into a concealed bathroom. I’d always wanted to have something hidden behind a bookcase.’ Externally the property looks clean and contemporary. Locally sourced chestnut cladding, chosen for its ability to cope with coastal winds and salty air, has weathered to a silvery-grey patina. Grey-green aluminium frames have been used on the windows facing the sea, so they look as if they merge into the glass. ‘We did remove a lot of the glass from the original design, but then opened up the back with floor-to-ceiling Crittall glazing, so we could enjoy both sunrise and sunset,’ explains Penny. As the property is so close to the sea, and within a flood area, it’s been built on stilts a metre above the ground to allow water to pass under in case of high tides. A ramp provides step-free access to the front door and just inside there’s a staircase to the right. ‘It’s a standard design,’ Penny explains. ‘I had wanted a curved one, but by the time we started working on the interiors, money was tight.’ Penny’s carpenter, however, managed to add some elements to give it the appearance of being slightly curved. Penny rarely needs to use the woodburning stove. ‘I can sit in the house in March without turning the heating on,’ she admits. Underfloor heating features downstairs and Victorian-style radiators upstairs. ‘I feel they add rather than detract from the design,’ says Penny. Although the kitchen is traditional in style, it complements the contemporary build. ‘A lot of companies said they couldn’t create joinery to fit the deep gable roof, but The Main Company was happy to accept the challenge,’ says Penny. Keen on using every inch of the space, she also wanted a very simple floating shelf to run above the sink and countertop. ‘I needed it to have lighting and The Main Company managed to create the perfect oak shelf with integrated lighting below.’ A long peninsula separates the cooking and dining areas, and the whole space is a pleasure to be in. ‘I enjoy preparing meals with the big picture window in front of me,’ adds Penny. ‘In fact, nothing feels like a chore when I’m working in here.’

hen Ally and Russ George decided they wanted to downsize and build their contemporary dream home by the sea, they nearly overlooked this corner plot. Having already sold their Victorian home in Brighton, they began looking for a project and leafleted all the prospective properties on nearby Shoreham beach. Feeling desperate, they bought a tired 1960s, five-bedroom chalet bungalow. Planning permission for the couple’s new home, which had a design inspired by the black wooden houses on the beach in Dungeness in Kent, took an agonising six months. ‘The main objection was the use of black timber, which most of the neighbours now actually love,’ says Ally. The charred larch cladding from Exterior Solutions underwent the traditional Japanese process of shou sugi ban to preserve the wood by running a flame over the surface, and is Ally’s favourite feature. Beginning in October 2019, the couple initially converted the standalone garage into a self-contained cabin, where they lived for

six months during the renovation. However, the project quickly turned into a complete rebuild. While extending the back of the house and awaiting the arrival of the zinc roof, the vulnerable remaining structure became a victim of the weather. ‘The side wall was blown down in strong winds – it was a bit of a shock! We had to rebuild it, which was probably the best thing to do anyway,’ recounts Ally. In the end, the only exterior wall that remained was downstairs at the front – the rest of the house was rebuilt in timber. Although an architect was commissioned for the first stage, Ally took on the roles of project manager and co-worker with Russ. She admits: ‘We made a lot of mistakes and spent a lot more money than we needed to. For example, I changed my mind quite a bit with the electrics – things like the positioning and types of lighting.’ The stylish open-plan ground floor comprises a large living/dining area and kitchen. The only existing internal wall on this level is the one that partitions off the guest bedroom and bathroom. Having laid engineered whitewashed oak on the floor of the main bedroom, the couple decided to use it downstairs on the dividing

and back walls, around the black-framed sliding glass doors leading to the garden. ‘We’d had the ground-floor ceiling plastered but I felt it made the house look like a factory unit, so I said, “Let’s timber the ceiling.” I sold a few Chanel bags to pay for it!’ Russ used his ‘spare time’ over six weekends to laboriously affix the tongue-and-groove boards to the ceiling. A polished-concrete floor had also been on the wishlist, but the cost was estimated at £15,000, so the couple settled instead on screed with a sealant on top, at a much more budget-friendly £2,500. ‘I love its inconsistencies – and if it gets a scratch, it doesn’t seem to matter,’ explains Ally. Most of the kitchen is neatly concealed along one wall, behind MDF doors made to fit carcasses from Howdens, which have been painted in a bespoke eggshell from Dulux. The organic-concrete island was another ‘learning on the job’ first for the couple. ‘We were pouring the concrete when it started to seep out of the shuttering onto the newly laid floor. I just had time to bomb over to Screwfix to buy long bolts to go through it and hold it all together,’ says Ally. The resulting boltholes add to the island’s character: ‘People either love it or hate it. It looks like something out of Brighton Marina.’ With their children having flown the nest, the couple wanted to luxuriate in a boutique hotel-style bedroom, which they created on the whole top floor of the house. The space is bathed in daylight from huge glass doors leading onto a sedum roof on the ground-floor extension, and includes a statement limestone bath and wet room, as well as custom storage built into the eaves by Russ. The house is bordered by a shingle garden with low-maintenance coastal planting and hardscaping of rendered walls and slatted-screen fencing. There’s also a cabin clad, like the house, in blackened larch. Ally has plans, if budget allows, to join it to the main house with a connecting hallway: ‘I love the look of joined-up boxes,’ she explains. Ally and Russ now have their dream house, which they love to share with friends and family. In fact, Ally’s favourite piece of furniture is the 70/70 Muuto dining table, ideal for entertaining and the perfect spot for guests to relax and to enjoy this stunning seaside home. 90 housebeautiful.com/uk

hen Jess Gibbons and Kat Turner were asked to give this family home a new lease of life, they planned to blend the house’s own deep-seated character with a few more modern elements. ‘As it was once a farmhouse, this place feels very connected to its rural setting,’ explains Jess. ‘We wanted to retain that sense of history and place while bringing in some contemporary touches and comfortable, rich textures. Our challenge was to give it a new-but-old look.’ While the core of this Lakes farmhouse dates from the 15th century, most of it was built in the 1890s. ‘Ensuring the property remained in tune with its heritage was integral to creating the right mood inside,’ says Jess. Part of the aim of renovating the house, which had been a well-used holiday home for many years, was to open up the rooms and make the most of its amazing views – and reverse some ill-advised alterations that had been carried out when the house had been updated, back in the 1970s. One of these was a picture window in the dining room that had always felt out of keeping with the original architecture. The owners were keen to reinstate traditional wooden sash windows throughout and replace that picture window with glazed French doors, which now lead from the dining room to an outside seating area. ‘You can still enjoy the views, but the structure of the house now looks authentic,’ says Kat. ‘We did consider installing bifold doors, but that would have simply repeated the mistake made in the 1970s – bolting on something that would jar with the original architecture as time goes on. Now, the house sits well within its Lakeland setting.’ Stepping beyond the front porch and its comfortably jumbled storage area, the rooms on the ground floor are surprisingly generous. The removal of some dividing walls has created a large kitchen/diner and, next door, a spacious living room, which is centred around an inglenook fireplace. It’s a layout that works for the owners, who love to invite family and friends here for weekends, but large spaces can end up feeling rather cold and empty when they’re not full of people. Kat and Jess’s solution was to make each room feel like a sequence of smaller areas, rather than one huge space. So in the dining room, which flows into the kitchen, the area beside the French doors is now a cosy reading nook, while lighting helps to define the dining table. ‘In the evening, the ceramic pendants over the table give a low-level localised glow, so you’re barely aware of the

Well chosen modern pieces lend this period property a new-but-old look rest of the room around you,’ says Kat. Then in the kitchen, an island three metres in length divides the working and dining areas. ‘We needed to scale up this island so that it would fill the space,’ adds Jess. The living room has also been subtly ‘zoned’ into pockets, each with its own focus. One corner is a book-lined study, while another has a piano and a table for playing board games. ‘This was a way to bring a cosiness to the large spaces,’ says Jess. Generous lengths of thickly woven fabrics were hung at the living room windows to reinforce the sense of intimacy: ‘They are practical for warmth, but also feel quite cosseting,’ she adds. In the seating area around the inglenook fireplace, sofas and chairs upholstered in wool mix with luxurious velvets, all contrasting with the exposed original stone walls and wooden beams. These beams look in keeping with the farmhouse’s character, but were actually salvaged from a Victorian pier. ‘An all-white ceiling would have looked too bare, but these beams bring in just the right amount of weathered texture,’ explains Kat. The wooden floorboards were also salvaged and stained a deep black-brown to link with the stone flooring in the next-door dining room and kitchen. Kat and Jess deliberately avoided too many patterned fabrics downstairs, erring towards natural, earthy shades of brown, heather and green, all colours that are echoed in the views beyond the windows. Upstairs, however, vintage-feel patterned wallpapers add life to a guest bedroom and bathroom, while paisley curtains by Colefax and Fowler almost melt into the dusky pink walls of the main bedroom. Here and there, the old lintels and sections of stone wall are exposed as a reminder of the house’s roots, the strongest thread that connects the reworked spaces of this home. While some interior designers talk about adding ‘wow factor’, Jess and Kat aimed for a far quieter mood, rooted in the calm character of the house and its landscape. As Kat points out, ‘It was almost as if we had two clients: the owner and the house itself. We wanted to reflect the stories of both in a way that will endure.’

t the mouth of the River Fowey on the southern coast of Cornwall, a small ferry links the port towns of Fowey and Polruan, offering travellers a spectacular view of the estuary’s pretty villages. The historic town of Fowey grew up on the western bank, with china clay exports forming the bedrock of its economy. Now, fishing and tourism keep it afloat. The town’s period cottages, independent shops, bijoux cafés and river views are a perennial draw for visitors. Eight years ago, Tracey Thorn decided to invest in a Cornish retreat and, after extensive research, settled on Fowey, where she looked for a property in which she could indulge her passion for interior design. The old stone cottage she found was ideally situated at the end of a cul-de-sac, overlooking the parish churchyard of St Fimbarrus and linked to town via a narrow laneway, making it private yet accessible. Helped by a team of tradespeople, Tracey embarked on an exhaustive two-year renovation of the two-bedroom cottage. ‘It was in a very rundown state,’ she explains. ‘No work had been done on it in 50 years, so I was really starting from scratch.’ Tracey named her bolthole The Sea Swallow after the bird, also known as the Arctic tern, the lyrical silhouette of which can occasionally be spied over the blue-green waters off the Cornish coast. With its crisp white plumage, soft grey wings and neat black cap, this annual visitor is as intrepid as it is elegant: undertaking an epic pole-to-pole migration from its breeding grounds in the Arctic to spend summer in the Antarctic. Tracey’s Sea Swallow has a modern country cottage feel, with accents of vintage English eccentricity. Walls have been knocked through to create more open space, and the new kitchen, while small, is furnished with open shelves stacked with simple white crockery. Arranged over three floors, the spaces are unified by a cool, natural colour scheme. Farrow & Ball’s All White supplies a gentle luminosity throughout, while Cornforth White has been used on the floors. Coastal themes are reflected only in the most abstract way with the use of the gentle tones of sand and sea. Soft hues, handmade linen curtains, downy grey House Beautiful AUGUST 2022 105

living room fabrics and pale-painted floorboards echo the colour combination of the seabird after which it was named. Whenever possible, Tracey sourced ecofriendly materials and made the soft furnishings by hand. She frayed the edges of the linen curtains to allow for a gentle framing of the windows which, on the upper floors, provide spectacular rooftop views. Place House, the grand Grade I-listed estate of the Treffry family, is visible from the top floor, its castellated tower lending an aura of storybook magic to the scene. Old and new are carefully blended throughout the house, with many unique finds sourced from local antiques stores. Rooms are styled to be pared-back yet inviting, with minimal decoration. Honey-coloured pine chests of drawers, vintage 1930s mirrors, a wonderful Georgian linen press, and the occasional ochre-yellow accent vase or throw are arranged with an expert eye for detail. The second-floor bathroom is a striking combination of simplicity and luxury, with a smart wet room-style shower and an elegant contemporary ‘eggshell’ bathtub. In the main bedroom on the top floor, a window seat furnished with white linen cushions offers a snug reading nook, the perfect spot to enjoy the regular chorus of church bells and seagull cries from above. ‘The window box had to be totally rebuilt to make sure it was structurally sound and to accommodate the cottage-style windows I thought would look best,’ explains Tracey. Picturesque towns teeming with old-fashioned antiques stores and tearooms serving sumptuous cream teas populate the area around Fowey. In Fowey itself, The Clementine offers an array of sustainably sourced lifestyle and home furnishings, while Any Old Lights has a fantastic selection of lighting. Tracey’s vision for a tranquil retreat that would be light, fresh and comfortable has been brought to life at The Sea Swallow. Whatever the season, this small cottage, imbued by the spirit of a seabird, provides the perfect perch from which to explore Cornwall’s enduring beauty. You’ve gone for quite a sophisticated look… We both loved the elegance of dark cabinets against light wood and, with the new large window, they wouldn’t feel oppressive in the room. We planned to double the length of the island to provide as much space as possible for prepping food and entertaining – everyone gravitates towards it. I love a clean, minimalist look, so wanted the sink and hob to ‘disappear’ into the worktop. How did you plan the units you would need? As we were losing the cupboards under the window, I was a bit worried we wouldn’t have
enough storage. We knew that, before starting the design, it was essential to work out exactly where the crockery, pots and pans needed to go. ustainable living. It’s the buzz phrase of the moment and rightly so. After all, science tells us that we’re facing a climate crisis. So if the UK plans to meet its pledge to reduce carbon emissions to net zero and achieve this by 2050, we all need to act now. But first, what exactly does sustainable living mean, and what does it look like? ‘It’s not about eco perfection,’ says Jen Gale, author of The Sustainable(ish) Living Guide and The Sustainable(ish) Guide to Green Parenting. ‘It’s all about trying to be more aware of the decisions we’re making on a day-to-day basis, and the impact that they have on people and the planet – and then trying to make better decisions, more of the time.’ According to Joanna O’Loan from the Energy Saving Trust, living more sustainably starts at home. She says: ‘Focusing on sustainability can help you to create a more comfortable home, reduce your carbon footprint and lower the impact of increasing energy bills.’ With this in mind, here is our roundup of great ideas and smart buys to help make every room greener.

The LIVING ROOM » Clean colour Walls need a revamp? How does climate-positive paint sound? Nowadays the colours on your walls can look good without adding to air pollution, thanks to a widening range of non-toxic, low VOC (unstable chemicals) and solvent-free offerings. Along with being aesthetically pleasing, the right plants, in large enough numbers, can boost oxygen levels and purify the air. » Bright idea Light up your life (and living room) with LEDs instead of traditional halogen bulbs. They’re cheaper, more cost-effective to run and last longer, so if you make the switch, you could also save around 5kg of CO2 emissions a year.

It’s all about consuming less and/or throwing away less. Try decluttering your rails by donating old and unwanted clothes to a new home. T
here is an irksome amount of blank wall space in my house. This is partly to do with my chronic indecision over anything art related. But it is significantly more to do with the expense of said wall art. Let me be clear – I don’t begrudge paying for it. It’s just my ‘room dressing’ cash always seems to get swallowed up by the unnecessaries of life like shoes for my children or fresh vegetables. (By the way, do people on TV property shows actually budget for such things? I’m forever flummoxed by the fact that someone who’s just surrendered £100k for a kitchen extension has enough remaining cash to populate every shelf and stick a consignment of beautifully framed, tonally appropriate prints on the freshly plastered walls in time for The Big Reveal.) Anyway, such was my annoyance at one particular piece of naked wall brazenly parading itself in the corner of my kitchen that I finally stopped googling ‘botanical wall art’ and started rummaging around the house for something that could, at least temporarily, protect its modesty. And so has come to life one of my favourite nooks of the entire house – something I can just about pass off as a gallery wall but is largely a collection of stuff, either new and never hung or still packed away from our old house and yet to find a suitable place to shine. It includes a couple of photos of the kids, an illustration I scrolled past on Instagram and for no particular reason loved, a Parisian street number plaque that represents the two years we spent living there down the rue from Jardin du Luxembourg, our initials in wooden letters that once relocated I then hurriedly painted in one of the many Farrow & Ball tester pots we have squatting in the shed, a fun Rockett St George ‘Naughty Corner’ sign, and a Rob Ryan plate I was given a decade ago and have never known what to do with. And now when I look at that wall I feel a special glow of smugness because not only have I created something I
love for south of £50, but I well and truly ticked the sustainability box in the process. Because isn’t repurposing at the heart of sustainability? Making it work for the long term, the antithesis of the throwaway. Before you get caught up in looking at a company’s green credentials, take a look around your home to see if you can make something you already own work in a new way. I guess there are a few guidelines to making this more likely. When you’re looking at bigger investment pieces that will stand the test of time and travel with you, don’t be seduced by trends of the moment. Opt for the timeless. I recently chose a natural linen headboard over the mustard velvet one, consigning the velvet to accent scatter cushions because I know, given that we live in a farmhouse in the country, the natural neutral will outlast any of my mid-term decor decisions. A touch of a trend is enough. Meanwhile, my make-do gallery wall turned out to be an exemplary, if minor, display of sustainable styling in the sense that everything was something that I truly loved or was personal to me. None of it was, say, dictated by the colour scheme of the room and so none of it is dispensable. And if it ceases to work in one place, I’ll always be able to find another for it, even if that necessitates some minor tweaks. Indeed, in many cases a total replacement of something is unnecessary. We recently built a kitchen banquette, which meant that, due to the shape of its legs, the table no longer worked. Rather than buying a new table, we replaced the legs, which cost less than £200. My other half then screwed some treated scaffold boards to the original base and – voilà! – we had a new outdoor table. Two-for-one. I suppose at the centre of this is a slight change of mindset. We’re all conditioned to think about value – how much bang we get for our buck. Lower impact updates such as changing kitchen cupboard doors or reupholstering a sofa can often hit a price point where we think ‘to hell with it I’ll just buy new’. But sustainable styling is about more than money. It’s about longevity and footprints. It’s about decorating with purpose.

econdhand shopping is experiencing a boom and it’s not hard to see why: it’s better for the planet as well as your wallet, and you can find exceptional and often unique pieces. The tricky thing, though, is how to navigate past all the, let’s face it, junk on offer, and separate the gems from the dross.
WHERE DO I START? This might sound obvious, but you’ve got to know exactly what you’re looking for to avoid spending hours aimlessly scrolling through, for instance, 10,000 plus listings for vases. You don’t need to have specialist knowledge but some narrowing down of the style you’re looking for will go a long way. For example, searching for ‘studio pottery’ will unearth more handmade, artisan pieces than secondhand high street. Following specialist antiques dealers on Instagram or looking on dedicated homeware resellers such as Vinterior – aka people who know what they’re talking about – will also help to provide more insight about what to search for.
I’VE FOUND SOMETHING I LOVE BUT HOW DO I KNOW IT’S RIGHT FOR MY HOME? Don’t be afraid to ask questions to find out more specific information. You may be intending to buy a piece to do it up but there are some 126 housebeautiful.com/uk
issues that just aren’t worth tackling (unless you’re a specialist). Most of us will probably manage to give an item a light sanding and a fresh coat of paint but will draw the line at repairing a broken chair leg. Ask for close-up pictures and you should be able to spot any damage you may have missed in the original images. And the golden rule for buying anything online? Always get the dimensions. It’s all too easy to think you’ve scored an absolute bargain only to find when your item arrives it’s the perfect size for a doll’s house.
I’M GOING FOR IT, BUT IT’S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY… WHAT NOW? Delivery is always something to be mindful of when buying online. Often on reselling platforms, larger pieces of furniture are listed as ‘collection only’, but fear not if your chosen item is hundreds of miles away. Many courier companies – such as AnyVan, Proovia and Shiply – offer collection and drop-off services nationwide. Filtering your results to ‘UK only’ will avoid the heartbreak of finding an item you love only to discover it will cost a fortune in import taxes and delivery. There are plenty of unexpected finds out there ready for the taking – someone else’s trash could very well be the treasure you’re looking for. Happy hunting!

eep in a valley in Stroud, Gloucestershire, lies a small cul-de-sac where Victoria, Andrew, Evie and William Davis live. They moved in during the pandemic in the depths of winter – the perfect time in which to plan what to plant in the garden for the year ahead. Victoria and Evie aren’t experienced gardeners but they love to learn. Previously they’d grown sunflowers initiated by a school project Evie had taken part in, so it was only natural that these were the first seeds they decided to sow – beginning life on their kitchen windowsill and then, as seedlings, moving out to the greenhouse. The garden the family inherited was a blank canvas. It had been stripped bare, leaving it open and exposed, so the first requirement was a boundary to provide privacy, and next was a resplendent display. Victoria and Evie’s sunflowers, which have thrived in this spot, have proved to be the perfect solution, creating a lovely, intimate outdoor space with its own microclimate in which life can take hold. Set on tall, leafy stems, the beautiful deep burnt orange flowerheads follow the sunshine, giving pleasure not just to the family but the neighbours, too. In addition, the area is alive with butterflies and bees, which travel between the flowerheads providing an essential source of food and in turn bringing in other wildlife. Now, what was until very recently a bare and uninspiring patch has been transformed, bringing life and joy to a young family and offering an oasis of calm and beauty.
Often used as a symbol of happiness, VXQġRZHUV KDYH transformed this once bare and uninspiring garden. Victoria and Evie’s impressive blooms thrive here, attracting bees and EXWWHUġLHV DV ZHOO DV feeding the birds with their seeds
VICTORIA AND EVIE’S SECRETS FOR SUNFLOWER SUCCESS » Start the seeds off inside on a sunny windowsill. » Plant out seedlings once the risk of frost has passed. » Stake taller varieties if they need it. On a still day, Victoria and Evie take away the support stick as they feel this strengthens the stems – they then replace them on windier days. In their experience, this seems to have produced VXQġRZHUV ZLWK YHU\ VWXUG\ VWHPV » Keep the seedheads for next year so you can use the seeds to replant. » You can also leave the stems and their seedheads over winter to provide food for the birds.

or a child growing up in Zurich, seaside holidays were a welcome change from city life in landlocked Switzerland. Memories of those family trips drew Swiss-born Andrea Rubin back to the sea when she and her husband Johnny were looking for a home in Kent in 2006. They found a house on the cliffs between Hythe and Folkestone, with a 180-degree sea view: ‘It’s great living here,’ says Andrea. ‘We can see the sun rise and set.’ A hosepipe ban was imposed during the hot, dry summer when Andrea and Johnny moved in, so they decided the garden could wait. Instead, they focused on the house, building a first-floor glass balcony to make the most of the spectacular setting. This dictated what Andrea went on to do in the garden. ‘We can only see the top of the garden from the balcony, so I wanted big, bold colours to compete with the sea view. I also chose flowers that don’t close at night, so we could enjoy looking at them with an evening drink,’ she says. The garden was testing, especially for a near-novice gardener. A military hospital on the site had been knocked down in the 1980s and the resulting rubbish left in the heavy clay soil. When Andrea and Johnny arrived, the vertiginously steep garden was a rocky jungle of pampas grass, phormiums and hebe-like shrubs planted too close to the fence. The following spring, Andrea ripped everything out to open up the space. A big conifer, wrong on the slope, was chopped down and is now used as a bird table. Facing south, both house and garden are battered by unstoppable sea winds (the windows are constantly white with salt) so – a good tip for all new gardeners – Andrea looked over the fence to see what her neighbours were growing. She wasn’t in a rush to create an ‘instant’ garden: ‘I started on a small scale by improving the soil and widening the plant palette.’ Biding her time, she visited local sales in search of plants, such as succulents, that would thrive in the conditions, and learned the joys of division and sowing seeds to increase her stock. One of her particular triumphs has been an unusual member of the aster

SCULPTURAL INTEREST Opposite page Thanks to its vibrancy, this bed near the main lawn makes an impact when viewed from the balcony. family, Berkheya purpurea, which she spotted in Tom Stuart-Smith’s prairie garden at RHS Wisley, and has since grown from seed. Although the garden is only about 300 metres square, it seems much larger because of its dramatic dip away from the house. This sense of space is further enhanced by Andrea’s subtle division of the plot into three. Near the house, a small lawn is framed by shrubs and drought-resistant herbaceous perennials chosen expressly to attract butterflies and moths. These include perennial sweet peas on the fence, and, below, bright gaillardias (selected instead of gazanias, which close up at night), fuchsia and coreopsis. There were slow worms in the garden already, but Andrea wanted to encourage more wildlife, so to one side of the lawn is a small pond with floating island baskets of marsh marigolds and flag irises, shaded by Fatsia japonica. Andrea recalls that a frog arrived as soon as the liner had been filled with water, before the pond was even planted up, and it’s now a haven for more of them, as well as insects and birds. Below the lawn is a rockery, through which a precipitous path zig-zags down to the vegetable garden. The rockery was created from boulders that were dotted about the site when the couple moved in, with builders’ rubble used for a shingle sub-structure. The shingle was too steep to lay a membrane, which would have just slipped down the slope, so the soil, deliberately left impoverished, is retained by low wooden boards. Influenced by Beth Chatto, Andrea made a gravel garden, planting succulents and alpines, such as sedums, sempervivums, agaves, achilleas and erigerons. All manage in the drying salt-laden winds that mimic desert conditions. Jagged driftwood sculptures stand out among sisyrinchiums, phlomis, agapanthus, nepeta and floaty

Verbena bonariensis. Plants are repeated throughout the garden, giving rhythm and continuity, while the soft shapes and bright colours of the perennials contrast with spiky grey agaves and echeverias. The atmosphere changes again at the foot of the slope, where an enfolding hedge of rugosa roses protects planting from the sea winds. In fact, the vegetable garden Andrea has created here is so sheltered and sunny that she doesn’t need a greenhouse, even for tender peppers. The garden’s steep slope is still an issue, so tomatoes are grown in pots, arrayed against the wall of the path above. ‘Nothing beats the flavour of a home-grown tomato,’ she says. Meanwhile, peas, beans, courgettes, butternut squash, beetroot and onions are planted in a raised bed. So successful has Andrea been in her seaside garden that she is now itching to find out how she would deal with very different planting conditions. Referencing memories of her grandparents’ home in Switzerland, she says that she and Johnny are currently making plans to create a new garden in the countryside in Wales. ‘I realise now that what I want is greenery and nature,’ she says. est sown in spring or autumn, these cool-season crops are easy to grow. Plant the seeds directly into humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun. Sow them half a centimetre apart in rows 5-7cm wide. Thin the seedlings to 2.5cm apart if you want to harvest large plants. Seeds can be planted thickly and plants can be thinned by harvesting. Water them regularly in dry weather. Welsh onions take about 65 days from seed to harvest. Allium ĠVWXORVXP is one of the cold-hardiest onions and can withstand temperatures EHORZ ij) ij&
ADD YEAR-LONG INTEREST WITH COLOUR & TEXTURE Think variegated leaves, berries and autumn annuals
A
s the end of summer rears its head, the garden takes on a mellow loveliness, with softer light and more muted flowers. But there’s still much to enjoy in the container garden. Growing large evergreen trees and shrubs in big planters provides year-round structure, giving as much pleasure later in the year as in summer. Evergreen ferns add texture and shape – two of my favourites are the glossy-leaved Asplenium scolopendrium (hart’s-tongue fern) and Polystichum setiferum with its arching filigree fronds. But focusing on evergreens doesn’t have to mean going without colour. Laurel, bay and Fatsia japonica have gorgeous glossy dark green leaves, but for something with more
impact, think about phormiums and cordylines. Phormium ‘Sundowner’ has leaves striped with grey-green, soft apricot and pink, while for something a little moodier, I love Phormium ‘Maori Queen’ for its bronze-green leaves with rosy-red stripes. You can add interest with berries and flowers. Symphoricarpos albus (snowberry) has clusters of snow-white berries in autumn and pink bell-shaped flowers in summer. Seasonal annuals will also add a hit of colour through autumn and winter – osteospermums, petunias, gazanias, annual rudbeckias, violas and calibrachoas will bring your pots to life. TV presenter Angela Scanlon on wine mugs, crystals and giving birth at home door and there’s freedom to it. If you’re wearing stilettos, you’re not having fun! My favourite room in the house is…
The living room – I had my second daughter in there in a birthing pool. It was always my favourite room but now it feels like where we’ve shared our most precious moments. My Zoom backdrop is… A Damien Hirst
painting in our spare room, which now has a cot in but is technically my office. The light’s good in there.
where I breathe out. Our house in north London is a 1950s Arts & Crafts design. It’s got stained glass windows and porthole windows. It’s the first place we’ve had in London where we have our own front door. It feels really significant.
My childhood home was…
In the country. Our bungalow in Meath, north of Dublin, was surrounded by fields. It was very remote and very safe. We’d leave home in the morning and be out all day until teatime.
My dinner party tabletop aesthetic is…
Having a washed, worn linen tablecloth, mismatched crockery, a tumbler for wine, and knotted napkins, plus lots of candles and flowers in little jars that my daughter [Ruby, four] will pick. If it’s a nice day, we’ll take our dinner table out into the garden and feel like we’re in the South of France. :KHQ , JHW KRPH WKH ĠUVW WKLQJ , GR is… Take off my shoes. Our house is a

Right now I am in…
A vegetable shop in north London [being interviewed by phone], and promoting my debut book, which is all about gratitude.
Flatpack furniture has been banned from our house because it almost ruined my marriage. If you’re clever, you can make it look really expensive when it’s not. However, my brain doesn’t work that way, so it was always left to my husband Roy, and his brain, it turns out, doesn’t work that way either. I collect… Crystals. My
My walls are… Beige! The walls are the backdrop to our very colourful art and our Loaf blue velvet love seat (right). I’m allergic to the beige situation that I see across Instagram. It feels as though everyone has the same décor. That said, I have a beige couch, which was really ill-thought-out considering I have two young children! The biggest extravagance in my home is… Our bed

I’m currently reading Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience by Brené Brown. Scented candles or diffusers? Candles, all the way.
Gadget guru or technophobe? Technophobe. For my podcast I need all the gear but if something goes wrong with the computer, it gives me palpitations. Interior design: DIY or get someone in? I get someone in although I can hammer a nail and hang a picture. TV in the kitchen: yes or no? Absolutely not! It’s so 1980s.
