T
ime again to leave another year behind us and proudly present to you a new edition of the popular Weathertex Sustainable Design Trends annual magazine for 2022. Although 2021 still showed some market challenges especially within the building industry with blistering demand, soaring prices and supply shortages, Weathertex was able to provide customers with a level of certainty when it came to pricing and product availability. This was easily achieved by being an Australian familyowned cladding manufacturer located in the Hunter Region NSW and sourcing only locally second graded grown timber from PEFC certified plantations.
The pandemic has permanently changed the future of building design, with consumers opting more than ever for sustainable green building materials and no longer willing to sacrifice the environment, their health, wellbeing, and day to day comfort living. It’s become our social, professional and environmental responsibility as planners, architects, designers, builders and citizens to advocate for sustainable practices in everything we create. We’ve come to realise that sustainable design is not a choice, but a necessity, if we value not just our planet, but our lives. COVID-19 unfortunately has been our wakeup call.
By selecting Weathertex as your cladding option, you’re making a difference. All Weathertex products have a better than zero carbon footprint and are made from 100% natural ingredients – hardwood and wax. It’s the only product of its kind in the world containing no added artificial glues, resins, formaldehydes or silica. However, sustainable design does not have to compromise on cost or on aesthetics. Be inspired and motivated by some of Weathertex most inspirational projects making waves across Australia and around the world. BONNIE AT ALL SAINTS ESTATE, VICTORIA Country chic aesthetic meets artisanal pizzas and wine at Rutherglen’s new local. Set against the scenic All Saints Estate, Bonnie — a casual dining venue in Rutherglen by Eliza, Nick and Angela Brown — is now open, oƪering a traditional wood-ljred pizza oven and a menu celebrating local and estategrown produce and wines. The picturesque venue is set within the old bottling building at All Saints Estate, originally designed by the renowned Philip Cox in the early 1960s. The contemporary restaurant has been reimagined by Techne with a design direction to bring the outside in. Bonnie’s interiors are informed by its surrounding landscape, displaying a touch of the outdoors throughout the space. Stepping outside the restaurant, diners can make their way to the circular terrace by the lake’s edge, where expansive views serve as a ljtting backdrop for post-lunch or early-evening drinks. allsaintswine.com.au/bonnie

COBARGO SANTA PROJECT BY BREATHE ARCHITECTURE, NSW After the devastation of the bushljres, architect Jiri Lev established Architects Assist as an Australian Institute of Architects initiative to provide pro bono or reduced-fees service to assist with rebuilding people’s homes that were lost in the bushljres. So when homeowners David and Barbara Rugendyke lost their Cobargo home to the bushljres on New Year’s Day 2020 in NSW, Architects Assist supported them and connected the family with Breathe Architecture in Melbourne. Breathe not only planned and designed a new family home for Dave and Barb, but they also reached out to suppliers and collaborators to generously donate materials, products and services, with Breathe reaching out to Fisher & Paykel to donate kitchen and laundry appliances for the new home. NEIGHBOURHOOD STUDIO
Best known for his limestone sculptures and hybrid objects that balance form, materiality and process, Melbourne-based Lucas Wearne is the self-taught artist, craftsperson and maker who founded Neighbourhood Studio in 2020 Words Louise Smithers
S
ometimes functional, sometimes not, the hand-carved hybrid objects Lucas Wearne creates are always captivating. “I make and sell limited runs or one-oƪ collections of sculptural lamps and vessels,” Lucas explains. “I also make large-scale sculptures and relief artworks. Everything I make is hand-carved by myself at Neighbourhood Studio in Thornbury. I work across a variety of materials, techniques and styles, but predominantly with natural Australian limestone.” Curious about how things are made, Lucas grew up working with his father, a landscape
48
home design
gardener and stonemason. “Being able to think spatially has always been a strength of mine, and working with natural materials deljnitely nurtured that understanding,” he notes. After completing a Bachelor of Design (Landscape Architecture) at RMIT in 2015, Lucas worked brieNjy for a number of design studios and landscape architecture oƯces before starting his own practice in 2019. His ljrst taste of running a small business came when he began making and selling jewellery, before moving into furniture making and eventually sculpture work. “I started out making timber and steel furniture in 2019,” Lucas says. “As my
conljdence grew, my pieces gradually became more experimental and weird. I gave myself time to test ideas without being solely focused on proljtability. I oƪered up pieces for sale every now and then and received some really positive feedback. Eventually this led me to shift my practice to focus solely on sculptural works and by the beginning of 2020 I had established Neighbourhood Studio.” Fusing traditional workmanship with contemporary design, the pieces coming out of Neighbourhood Studio are predominantly made using locally sourced Australian limestone, and each is open to interpretation. “I don’t want to
in profile
prescribe how my work is consumed or enjoyed,” Lucas shares. “I feel like this is important, particularly when it comes to the very personal act of decorating your home.” Referencing Cubism, Greek Classicism and Romanticism, the pieces often combine soft curves, hard edges and jagged, textural ljnishes. “These movements seem a natural departure point for such an analogous craft,” Lucas explains. “I want to give my pieces a contemporary feel that references
the classics without being constrained by trying to recreate them.” Bridging art and utility, Lucas reveals that the “Picasso lamps” are by far his most popular design. In an attempt to create a piece that was as much a sculptural artwork as it is a functional object, Lucas has fashioned a pair of table lamps featuring soft, curved forms, with the two shapes complementing and balancing each other. The Picasso lamps use the negative space
through the carved-out voids, playfully emitting a warm glow from within. By focusing on one-oƪ pieces and limited collections, Lucas is able to keep things interesting and stay motivated to produce new work. Excited by the endless potential the medium of sculpture oƪers, we look forward to watching the evolving nature of Lucas’ work and the future of Neighbourhood Studio. HD neigbourhd.com

The Brewer Family purchased a 100-year-old heritage cottage that was in a very poor state and undertook a major renovation. “We managed to retain the original front of the cottage and were super careful to leave as much as possible of the original features,” says the family. Those beautiful features are the essence of the home. They let in more natural light and improved ventilation in the bedrooms by adding extra matching period windows — these were salvaged from the rear addition of the house that was demolished. A favourite new feature is the French doors that provide access to the wrap-around verandah and let natural light into the rooms. The new rear extension makes use of recycled bricks and black-steel windows — these complement the soft heritage beauty without dominating it. The Brewer family feels the restoration has really done the original home justice, revealing its true beauty. “It has created the perfect place to call home,” says the family. Leon and Rochelle Davies bought a 1970s Italian-style home in its original condition in Lesmurdie, Western Australia. “(This) was a challenge in itself, but with lots of inspiration and hard work, we have converted the interiors into the Hamptons dream home we have always wanted,” say Leon and Rochelle. It went from face-brick walls and a small, poky kitchen to a light and bright farmhouse/Hamptons-style space. “The kitchen is stunning and features a duck-egg-blue island and white marble benchtops as well as ample space. The scullery and laundry connected to the kitchen makes everyday chores seem so effortless. Making dinner is now a joy,” they enthuse. Kitchen Designer Dean Kitchens

The BRUNNER BSK 6 and BSK 8 are fully Australian emission and clearance tested. Being highly eƯcient with low emissions, they not only produce a beautiful picture of a perfectly clean-burning Njame, they will also cover most of the heating needs of an averagesized house using highly eƪective natural convection combined with heat storage.

The Euro Fireplaces team have years of experience and make regular visits to European manufacturers and industry seminars, enabling them to provide customers with the very best in clean, eƯcient ljreplaces. N
ew generations of home heaters are creating cleaner, greener environments and tapping into smart technology and innovation to provide a warm winter. Fuelled by electricity, gas, wood or ethanol, many heaters are also decorative features, striking focal points that are as beautiful as they are functional.
ELECTRIC HEATING TO WARM YOUR HEART This option has undergone some innovative transformations over the last few years. Dimplex commercial manager Ciaran Murphy says energy used by electric Njame and heating appliances is being reduced through new technologies like seven-day time and temperature control, occupancy sensors to avoid heating unused rooms, and eco-heating functionality. “There are diƪerences in heating capacity from heater to heater — this is measured in the rated wattage of the appliance,” he explains. “A good rule of thumb is that 70W of heat is required per square metre of space, so a 1000W heater can cover approximately 15sqm.” There are also plenty of hot new looks in electric home heating that are wowing homeowners. Ciaran says electric Njame technology has advanced in leaps and bounds in recent years. “New technologies simulate 3D Njame and smoke in ways previously unimaginable, as well as allowing customisable ljrebox linings to suit home decor,” he says. Modern electric ljreplaces also have plenty of visual appeal. Ciaran says they’re a great value-add feature in a home. “They provide a visual focal point that can’t be achieved using traditional panel heaters for instance,” he says. “Many homeowners are choosing to add an electric ljreplace in order to increase their home’s value without the expense of running gas lines, Njueing and so on.”

Like many other sources of heat, electric can be targeted to where it’s needed. Ciaran says instead of heating unused areas with a whole-home system, electric Njame and heat products enable temperature control over individual zones. “They’re now frequently equipped with app control, further expanding the options and customisation available to consumers,” he says.
AIR CONDITIONING FOR CLEVER COMFORT If you thought air conditioners were just for keeping your home cool, think again. Reversecycle air conditioners can both heat and cool a home on demand. Joe De Bella, senior product marketing manager — air conditioning at Panasonic Australia, says reverse-cycle air conditioners are extremely eƪective both in terms of energy use and cost. “They come with thermostats and advanced inverter technology, which adapts to the temperature and condition of the room,” he says. There are also plenty of new innovations with smart technology, says Joe. Not only
can you set timers oƪ and on, you can create rules so the air conditioning, smart lighting, blinds and shutters can all be synchronised — even when you’re out of the home. “That same smart technology also allows users to use voice control to manage climate control,” he explains. As an added bonus, Joe says Panasonic air conditioners have built-in air-purifying technology called nanoeX. “It inhibits airborne and surface-mounted impurities, helping you purify the air inside your home,” he shares. The fan design of air-conditioner units is another improvement in recent years. “Distribution of the air is done via the system’s internal fan and the new fan design has allowed units to deliver a longer airNjow while using less electricity and remaining quiet,” says Joe.
WOOD-FIRE HEATING FOR ORGANIC WARMTH There’s no doubt wood heaters are a great option to keep you toasty warm; they heat a room using eƯcient and rapid radiant heat.

Kerry White from Castworks says wood ljres have evolved into a captivating focal point in a home. “Few people can walk past a woodburning ljre and not stop to enjoy its cleanburning natural warmth,” she says. There are also plenty of other good reasons to choose wood. For starters, it’s a renewable resource. Kerry adds that using ljrewood has positive implications for the planet. “According to a report published by Elsevier, completed by the CSIRO and Scion Australia, the use of ljrewood for domestic heating has the potential to reduce fossil fuel use and associated CO2 emissions,” she says. Cutting-edge technology is also making wood heaters cleaner and more eƯcient. Kerry says the Australian Standard is one of the strictest emissions standards in the world. “In 2015, emissions were reduced from 4.0g/kg to 2.5g/kg, then in 2019 they were reduced further to 1.5g/kg,” she explains.
GAS HEATING — A GREEN FUEL Gas heating is available in a multitude of styles and sizes, with modern innovations. Ignition is often electronic and some models feature remote controls and operation via an app, so again automation is creating smarter home environments, giving homeowners more control over the way they live. Gas heating oƪers energy-eƯcient, aƪordable and consistent heating. It is a high-performance fuel source. Gas-ducted heating allows you to control your comfort levels your way, in zoned rooms. It’s eƯcient, environmentally friendly and has eƯciency ratings so you can opt for the level you want on the product you choose. Gas ducted heating can be installed in the roof or Njoor. An internal heating unit takes cool air from outside the home and warms it, and then insulated ducts deliver it to the rooms where it’s needed. There are also other options in addition to ducted heating; these include gas ljres that look like wood ljres, gas convector heaters and radiant gas ljres. Gas heating can also be Njued or portable. Gas is a reliable heat source as pipes are underground — no electricity outages to contend with. They also don’t take up as much space as some other heating alternatives. It’s a great option for heating your home that will also be a value-add should you decide to sell in the future. If you love the look and ambience of natural Njame, gas ljres can emulate stone or wood, creating a cosy feel to a space. Some

are single sided while others are double sided, simultaneously heating a greater area of the home. There are optional Wi-Fi kits for smart operation and many new-look gas ljreplaces are minimalist in design so they sit comfortably in a contemporary home.

Australia gets a lot of sunshine, so utilising the energy of the sun makes good sense. Stephen Cranch, general manager of Solahart, says when it comes to home heating, solar power is an excellent way to help reduce the cost of staying warm. “Hot water typically makes up around 25 per cent of the average Australian household’s energy use,” says Stephen. “Installing a solar hot water system is another smart way to reduce your gridenergy consumption and make a real diƪerence to the environment.”
Solar hot water collectors generate more energy per square metre than solar power panels, making solar hot water perfect for people with limited roof space or those who plan to get solar panels in the future. Or you could also install a solar hot water and solar power package from the outset to maximise your solar investment from day one. Solar water heaters are cost-eƪective, reliable, and use proven technology developed right here in Australia and pioneered by Solahart back in 1953.
UNDERFLOOR HEATING — A TREAT FOR YOUR FEET If you’ve never considered underNjoor heating, it could be time to revisit that decision. There are many reasons why it’s a great option to keep you and the family snug this winter. Sandra Skelly from Comfort Heat says it has no mechanical noise, air movement or draughts, creates no dust,

is low temperature and does not overheat the room. “It also does not take space away from your interior design, does not require adjustments to furniture placement and requires no wall space,” she adds. There are two diƪerent options depending on your home — electric and hydronic. Sandra says electric Njoor heating products utilise a cable that heats to 40°C when power is attached. “This Njoor heating is usually installed for renovations and smaller Njoor areas such as bathrooms,” she says. Hydronic Njoor heating systems utilise a PEX pipe that circulates heated water through a Njoor at 45°C to warm the Njoor. Sandra says this product is usually used in new buildings. “It makes use of diƪerent heat sources such as natural gas boilers or electric heat pumps,” she says. There are also diƪerent insulation options depending on the location. “Floor heating can be installed within a slab to make use of the thermal mass, or in a topping screed as used in bathrooms, or in a thin tile glue or ardit when minimum Njoor height is required,” says Sandra. GET WITH THE TIMES The beneȘts of modern electric Șreplaces
W
ith their realistic Njame eƪects and advanced features, modern electric ljreplaces have become a true alternative to wood and gas ljreplaces. In the past, electric ljreplaces gained a reputation for being less authentic, less powerful and unable to produce a beautiful Njame when compared to more conventional ljreplace solutions. However, electric Njame technology has evolved and many of those old perceptions no longer hold true. Nowadays, electric ljreplaces are leading the way in terms of visual graphics, design and heating technology, resulting in a lower-cost, green, functional and stylish option when wood
80
home design
and gas ljreplaces are not suitable. Today, there is a range of high-quality models that have realistic-looking Njames created by a reNjector or rotisserie that reNjects light from an LED (light-emitting diode) strip. In addition to advanced Njame eƪects, modern electric ljreplaces also oƪer a variety of proljles, designs and installation options, ranging from freestanding (requiring no installation at all) to wall-mounted models. Leading solutions incorporate innovative features such as enhanced sensory elements (such as devices that emit the sound of a crackling ljre), motion-sensing technology that detects room movement,
and positive temperature coeƯcient (PTC) heating technology. So why specify an electric ljreplace? There are myriad reasons, but perhaps most importantly, electric ljreplaces don’t rely on combustibles to produce Njame, so there are no risks associated with oxygen depletion, smoke or indoor air quality. This also means it’s a much greener option as they don’t contribute to carbon emissions. Modern electric ljreplaces are also easy to install, most being “plug and play”. This is advantageous for new builds or renovations in which there is no gas connection, or where running Njue systems would be impractical. Occupants can enjoy the beneljts
of Njame without any of the cost or hassle associated with the installation of Njues or other complicated structures. The latest in electric Njame innovation from Real Flame, Vivente is the future of electric ljres. With a choice of 750mm, 1000mm and 1500mm widths, the product is sized to suit a range of applications, from small apartments to grand entertaining areas. The clever design enables the choice of creating a one-, two- or three-sided conljguration when the product is being installed, while anti-reNjective glass avoids unwanted reNjections impacting the stunning Njame eƪect. It is the Revillusion™ Njame eƪect that truly sets Vivente apart; by removing the central mirror
seen in traditional electric ljres, Revillusion™ increases the visible depth of the ljrebox and allows the ljrebox lining to be changed to suit your interior design theme. There are four ljnish options included as standard: ribbed, tiled, stacked stone and plain black. You can even customise your own panel to suit. Vivente’s unrivalled features include SmartSense motion-sensing technology, heating, and a multitude of Njame colour and sensory options such as the crackle of a real ljre. These settings can be controlled either with the on-board controls, the remote control, or the Flame Connect app (available for Android and iOS). HD realNjame.com.au
OTHER KEY FEATURES • Two fuel bed options — traditional ceramic log set and clear crystals • Flame Connect app available for your smartphone • Real Njame crackling sound eƪect • Multiple fuel bed themes • 1500W of supplemental heat • Seven-day programmable timer • Eight ambient lighting themes built in, with the option to fully customise your own theme through the app • Colour-changing Njame eƪects.

S
ome houses are created with current style in mind, while others are a timeless homage to good design. This Brighton dwelling is the latter, with quality materials and smart architectural principles applied to ensure it will remain as functional, relevant and aesthetically pleasing today as it will in many years to come. This project began as a renovation of an existing Victorian home. The bones of the period building were retained and restored, but the 1970s renovation was demolished and a new extension created that would better suit the homeowners. The Brighton Homestead sprawls across three storeys and is sited on signiljcant grounds in a location that meets the busy family’s every need. Indeed, family was a key design consideration when the homeowners employed Robson Rak Architecture and Interiors to work on this project. “The brief for this exciting project was to create a robust yet sophisticated home for a young family that loves entertaining,” explain the Robson Rak team. The

houses & apartments brighton homestead result is a marriage between sophistication and a playful, almost childlike mindset that makes this home perfect for family living — starting with the children’s zone. This area is a virtual wonderland for the young and young at heart. Play equipment was incorporated into the fabric of the design and the children can venture from one room to another via a series of dwarf doors cut into the bedroom walls, allowing for a whimsical sense of exclusivity. Another favourite feature is the secret ljrst-Njoor trapdoor — climb through this roof space and you can access the suspended net play area above the rumpus room, then continue across to the spiral slide that takes you all the way down to ground level. It combines play and secrecy with a simple and ageless colour scheme that will remain endearing to the family for years to come. This is the stuƪ childhood dreams are made of. Adults have not been forgotten in the Brighton Homestead design. The parents’ retreat is situated in the period part of the residence, where due respect to the Victorian era has been paid. Original detailing has been retained, with new materials chosen for their subtle texture and tone. “All spaces are grand in scale and proportion, so the interior has been

designed as insertions within these rooms, often not scaling from wall to wall or Njoor to ceiling, but rather being the more submissive aspect of the rooms and respecting the existing Victorian fabric,” say the Robson Rak team. This respect for the Victorian fabric is also evident in the entrance hall, where grand arches, detailed columns and intricately moulded ceilings are paired with a modern tiling scheme ljnished in many shades of grey. Contemporary pendant lights again bring this home into the modern era without feeling as if the house is tied down to a speciljc 2021 style. This was a very conscious choice the Robson Rak team made. “It contributes to the advancement of interior design as this house is now relevant for another 100 years and has been built to such a high speciljcation and quality that it will last for another century,” they say. “We have tried to avoid any ‘trendy’ aspects of interior design and rather respond to the client’s brief for a robust, engaging family home ljt to house four energetic young boys.” But this sense of timeless appeal doesn’t limit the opportunity for personalisation. Contemporary art is dotted throughout the

houses & apartments brighton homestead building, adding interest and appeal. Vases, glassware and other works of art are displayed on built-in shelving, again making this feel like a home that belongs to a speciljc family unit. Family truly is at the heart of the home’s design. The living zone is open-plan, incorporating the lounge, dining and kitchen. Dark veneers and complementary marble were chosen for the grounded, earthy feel they create. This is emphasised by the windows that look out onto the manicured gardens, with the doors opening all the way to create a seamless blend of indoor/outdoor living. A stylish pool is positioned close to the home, allowing for easy supervision, and the tennis court provides another opportunity for the family to come together and play. A simple yet expansive garage provides room to house all the motor toys the family needs, with ample space for three cars and a motorcycle. Linear ceiling detail adds interest without overwhelming the space and truly lets the vehicles be the hero of the room. Sustainability was also considered in the building’s design. “The high ceilings, generous eaves and substantial openable windows ensure cross ventilation alone cools the house,” say the Robson Rak team. And for those cooler winter nights, hydronic slab heating was installed, allowing for an unobtrusive yet luxurious method of temperature control. {HD robsonrak.com.au

COTTAGE EXTENSION A Southern Highlands stunner from Smith & Sons
B
uilt by Smith & Sons Southern Highlands and designed by Kathy Barnsley Architect, this charming cottage extension is superb. Maintaining the look of the original twobedroom, two-storey country cottage was important to the owners, who were keen to add a new master bedroom and additional downstairs living space. “When the couple bought the cottage, it had a small living/ dining area and both the bedrooms and bathrooms were upstairs, so they wanted a larger master area and additional living on the ground Njoor,” explain Brendan and Patrick Byrne from Smith & Sons Southern Highlands.

home design
The Smith & Sons team certainly delivered. The renovated home now enjoys a master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in robe, as well as a lounge room equipped with a Rinnai gas ljreplace and bifold doors leading to the new covered deck. A sitting room breezeway connects the new sections of the home to the existing dwelling. To accommodate the Low-E glass breezeway, the builders modiljed one of the original balconies to provide the new space with an unimpeded thoroughfare from old to new. Like all renovations, trying to match new materials with the existing cladding, colours,
tiles and Njooring can be tricky, but the results here are nothing short of perfection. To maintain the traditional cottage aesthetic, Newport Headland cladding boards in Berger ‘Grey Wolf’ were chosen to cover the facade. Inside, coƪee-coloured bamboo Njooring looks as delicious as it sounds. Rich and warm, the bamboo Njooring complements the spacious new outdoor deck and creates a sense of continuity between the indoor and outdoor areas of the home. BALLARAT BEAUTY A family home is given a new lease on life Photography Greg Karslake
B
uilt by Smith & Sons Ballarat and designed by Zarif Designs (with interior design by Jess Young), this Victorian residence is a far cry from its previous incarnation. Despite its shortcomings, the owner was keen to renovate rather than rebuild the sorely rundown property, which had been passed down to her by her father. With a strong sentimental connection to the dwelling, the team from Smith & Sons Ballarat have respectfully revived the home so it can now play host to its owner and her frequently visiting grandchildren. “The house was practically unliveable when we ljrst got to site,” remembers Ben Beasley, builder and co-owner of Smith & Sons Ballarat. “The kitchen appliances didn’t work, broken windows had been boarded up, the brickwork

was cracked and the roof damaged. The client wanted her family home restored so her family could come over to a safe and beautiful space.” The client brief called for an open-plan living space that spilled out to the north-facing patio. A new load-bearing beam was installed to take weight oƪ the existing roof, allowing for the removal of walls to create the open-plan kitchen, meals and living area. With a new roof extension to the kitchen, dining and alfresco space, as well as new double-glazed windows installed throughout, the house was fully rendered with a new iron roof and treated to new internal linings and Njoor coverings. “We give our clients a vast colour selection for benchtops, ljxtures and ljttings, tapware, wall colour and Njoor colourings,” says Rhys James,
builder and co-owner of Smith & Sons Ballarat. “This way they can create their own atmosphere and make their house a home.” Proving themselves as sentimental as the owner of this spectacularly renovated home, Rhys and Ben say the most memorable part of this project was seeing how happy the owner was with the result. “This job would have been easier to knock down and start again but the fact the client was sentimentally attached to the house, and that the house meant more to her than bricks and mortar, really set this job apart for us,” Rhys concludes. “It was very personal and that is the approach we like to have with all of our clients. Jobs like this are extra-special because a client is trusting us with something that obviously means a lot to them.”

SMITH PROJECT A modern coastal revival that’s the talk of Torquay Photography Matthew Lord
K
nown for its surf beaches and stunning scenery, Torquay is home to this masterfully extended abode. Built by Smith & Sons Geelong, the extension consists of an oƯce, master bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite. Additionally, the home received a remodelled kitchen, bathroom and entry/foyer. A new second-storey alfresco barbecue area, modernised living zones and a revamped exterior round out the work completed. A key component of the brief was to transform the dated external aesthetic of the home by implementing classic coastal features. The combination of Cypress pine shiplap and Linea weatherboards on the front facade, for example, exudes a welcoming and modern coastal vibe. The couple that own the home requested a larger master suite that included an oƯce space, which was achieved by extending out over the existing garage. The outdoor entertaining area on the upper level was also crucial to the success of the project,” says Mark Stewart, managing director at Smith & Sons Geelong. “The request was for the space to stay in close proximity to the kitchen while feeling integrated with the backyard.” Featuring Bondor insulated roof panels, the charming spot is given direct access to the yard via a convenient staircase. Speaking of stairs, the internal staircase was remodelled to include new balustrading as it snakes its way from the renovated entry and up through the modernised family areas. Designed by Colin Armstrong Design to promote comfortable and stylish coastal living, the interior of the home (completed by Kylie Sargent Interior Design & Building Consultancy) captures the atmosphere of the serene seaside locale. All the original windows have been replaced with double glazing, while the new kitchen is much more usable than it once was thanks to ample benchspace and storage. Light and bright, the kitchen features the warm tones of wood combined with white surfaces (like the Polytec Classic White matt Calacatta benchtops and oak cabinetry) and subtle black accents. This palette of wood, white and black continues in the bathroom, creating a cohesive home that Njows — like the rolling of a wave — seamlessly from one space to the next.

A
house built in the ‘60s and occupied by a couple in their 60s has been given the Smith & Sons treatment. The owners decided to renovate their family home while still working so it would be set up and ready for their retirement. Built by Smith & Sons Toowoomba East, the resulting double-storey extension is sublime. “Our team demolished the existing poorly constructed separate garage on a lower level and built a new double-storey extension,” says Smith & Sons Toowoomba East managing director Darryl Van der Kley.
102
home design
The extension consists of a garage with internal access on the lower level, a sunsoaked studio with internal access on the upper level and a new patio positioned next to the extension. The client selected all cladding materials (Custom Orb wall cladding, Scyon Axon cladding) and colours with the architect from Struxi Design prior to Smith & Sons commencing work. A combination of James Hardie and Colorbond products was used externally, while standard plasterboard was utilised internally. Corrugated iron was used to minimise the need for maintenance in tricky, inaccessible areas.
For the stairs, aluminium treads were applied to high-traƯc lower stairs, while timber was used for the upper stairs. “I love the way the upper level appears to Njoat over the driveway. The way it is separate yet still connected to the existing dwelling. It has a distinct look and maximises the view from the studio,” enthuses Darryl. “The client’s idea for the space was for a place to relax and listen to his records and for her to complete her paintings.” Whether perched on the patio of working in the studio, the owners of this home can relax and enjoy their retirement in style.

S
mith & Sons Gold Coast Central was the builder responsible for the revitalisation of this Surfers Paradise unit, which is mostly used for holiday letting. Looking to completely renovate the 22-year-old unit, the owners — retirees from Melbourne — are enthusiastic travellers who use the unit as a holiday retreat. As such, they opted for a calm coastal interior aesthetic that welcomes Quantum Quartz Ultra White 20mm benchtops and Laminex Aquamarine laminate in the Bosch-equipped kitchen. “Located in a beachfront building, it was important that the unit reNjected the subtropical
beach feel and lifestyle of the Gold Coast. Brave colours were chosen for cabinetry and benchtops and these choices paid oƪ when furnishings were added,” says Neil Whittred, builder and owner of Smith & Sons Gold Coast Central. “Our team completely renovated the unit, which consists of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sitting room and open-plan kitchen, living and dining space. The sitting room can now be closed oƪ by LuxaNjex plantation shutters to create a temporary third bedroom, and all general living Njoors were tiled with timber-look tiles.” To support the bifold plantation shutters in the sitting room, Smith
& Sons has cleverly constructed a bulkhead between the existing bulkheads. The timber plank tiled Njoors are the standout, particularly when combined with the beautiful plantation shutters. In the bathroom, Calacatta matt Njoor tiles collide with high-gloss rectiljed wall tiles and custom vanities for a ljve-star bathing experience. Energy-eƯcient lighting and fans reduce power bills and minimise the building’s impact on the environment. “With no interior designer in sight, the ljnished product is a standout for a relatively low-cost unit renovation,” concludes Neil. WAINSCOTING From creating a stunning Hamptons home to adding substance to a modern or more traditional Edwardian, Georgian or Frenchstyle home, wainscoting can be used in a variety of circumstances. Wainscoting panels were originally used to provide insulation, to protect walls from damage and to disguise rising damp from the moisture in the Njoor.
In its contemporary form, wainscoting is predominantly an ornamental wall feature that adds extraordinary style, character and value to your interior. There are many wainscoting style choices to suit any look and budget. Most commonly, wainscoting comprises frames and panels that usually cover the lower third of the wall and are topped with a chair rail. You can also frame and panel above the chair rail for a full-wallheight eƪect, or even double frame for a more intricate design. The construction of the panels — either raised or recessed — is another aspect to consider. The selection of the inlay
Another option for Shaker-style spaces is to apply the Intrim WB01 wall batten directly to the wall. Cover the full height of the wall or stick to the lower third of the wall with a chair rail incorporated. You can even get creative and produce modern patterns and geometrical shapes.
BEADBOARD WAINSCOTING This coastal style is achieved where narrow vertical boards are run and topped with a chair rail. A modern take on this uses large sheets such as Intrim VJ Board Pro 100 capped with a dado rail. T
here’s something magical about the Whitecliƪs house. Charred timber rises from the lush green landscape, creating austere, dark shapes with sharp deljnition. When paired with the natural stone wall, this creates a sense of contrasting visual splendour. Looking upon this property, you’re invited to connect with nature and reNject upon its majestic beauty. Yet this house wasn’t always such a homage to natural grace. Before Ascui & Co Architects began their work, the one-acre property played home to a 1970s kit home that had been added to over the years, providing a holiday destination for the Melbourne owners. One element the family loved prior to the renovation was the golden elm tree — quite an unusual feature for a coastal property, but one which represents growth, life and new beginnings. With this in mind, the Ascui architectural team fashioned a holiday home for this family of seven with the tree at its heart — and so the new Whitecliƪs house was born. “Two rectangular pavilions pivoting around the entry are placed around the tree, creating an open courtyard with a verandah and fullheight glazing taking in the garden outlook,” says Gonzalo Ascui, director of Ascui & Co

Architects. “The large, Njat site is Njanked by higher ground and naturally presented an opportunity for a building or buildings that could ‘stretch out’ as opposed to being centralised, so the design is conceived as pavilions in the landscape with the notion that the garden Njows through them and allows natural transitions between internal and external experiences.” One example of this is the covered verandah and outdoor room, which blurs the lines between inside and out and acts as a link between the front and rear gardens as it extends through the entry, continuing the stone paving to strengthen this connection. And when you do step through the entryway to the home’s interior, the true extent of the dwelling is revealed. This is a six-bedroom, fourbathroom home where space is abundant. It isn’t simply a place for a family to holiday but a property that has everything, with two additional powder rooms, a sports pavilion, outdoor lounge/dining area, pizza oven and barbecue outdoor kitchen, garage, outdoor pool, tennis court, cricket nets, golf net, ljrepit and swing. It’s the ultimate retreat. One room the homeowners naturally gravitate to is the living room, with its angled timber-clad ceiling and artisan-made natural log-burning ljreplace — yet it’s hard not to also favour the outdoor lounge area, with its double-sided wood ljreplace, huge dining table and comfy outdoor lounge chairs that are placed beside the pool, pizza oven and outdoor kitchen. “The fact that it is fully covered, but facing north and west, provides comfort and shelter from the sun and weather yet feels sunny and warm,” Gonzalo says. “The clients spend much of their time outdoors in this space.” Maximising nature’s heat with clever design such as this is simply one of the sustainable principles the architects took into consideration when planning this home. “The house is designed with sustainable passive design principles of solar orientation, cross ventilation, sun shading and shelter, combined with high levels of thermal insulation in the building fabric. There are ceiling fans in all rooms to improve air circulation and user

houses & apartments whitecliffs house comfort, and in-slab hydronic heating in the living hall and hydronic panel heating throughout other rooms,” says Gonzalo. “Energy eƯciency is a serious consideration; there is a 9kW PV solar panel array on the roof and a home battery system that provides much of the home’s energy needs,” he continues, adding that a CBUS integrated home-automation system allows customised remote control for lighting, blinds, the irrigation system and more. “Turning on the slab heating an hour or two before arriving at the house on a cold Friday evening is a reality for them,” says Gonzalo. One of the standout features of the dwelling is the black cladding. This was chosen to emphasise the wide green lawns and sense of openness at the property that the client loved. “The inspiration to create pavilions as objects in the garden naturally led us to consider materials that resonated with the greenness and texture of the garden — so it was not hard to decide on carbonised (charred) timber, traditional in Japan, called shou sugi ban,” Gonzalo says. “In this case, it is charred ironbark in a vertical shiplap proljle. The black charred timber is not only beautiful in its colour contrast to the greenness of the garden, it also gives the buildings a nice austerity and clarity of architectural form.” Indeed, this makes the home the true star of the property. “This is a house that, without luxurious and expensive materials or a magniljcent ‘hero’ outlook, provides a sumptuous enjoyment of architectural space and form, connection to landscape, sun, light, outlook, tactile materials and contrast, which are all enduring and nurturing qualities to be experienced by those living within,” say Gonzalo, and we couldn’t agree more. here’s a whimsical energy to this South Melbourne home. It’s a collection of delightful spaces nestled against and on top of each other, Njanked by a charming courtyard with the Melbourne city skyline the glorious backdrop. True magic abounds here thanks to a renovation with Honto Architecture at the helm. This Victorian-style home was built more than a century ago and, despite a renovation in the ‘90s, was well and truly showing its age. The dwelling suƪered from a deljcit of natural light in its core due to its position in the middle of three attached terraces, and a series of disjointed and compartmentalised spaces across diƪerent Njoor levels meant there was no real cohesion between the areas. The site was narrow and tight, and with heritage considerations to be mindful of and rigid council planning policies, renovations could have been a challenge. Thankfully, the team at Honto Architecture were more than able to meet the clients’ needs. “The clients’ brief for our studio was to create a multi-generational home with green and garden vistas, with planning that considered internal spaces as a series of private wings

for their adult occupants to retreat to,” explains Damien Lui, founding director of Honto Architecture. “Another important consideration was to future-proof the multilevelled home with a passenger lift that would address any mobility issues.” This proved to be the starting point for the renovation. Due to the bulk and height of the lift, and being mindful of planning restrictions, engineering challenges and, of course, considering the neighbours, there were very few places this could be positioned. Once this was established, the design and planning of the remaining program needed to pivot around this while working within tight planning constraints and fulljlling the rest of the clients’ brief. “The success of the design comes in how it resolves pragmatic and bureaucratic issues with a series of design gestures that become integral parts of the overall design language — such as an elevated brick planter and custom metalwork balustrades that direct outward gazes to garden vistas and away from neighbours’ sensitive areas,” says Damien. These garden vistas are one of the highlights of the redesigned space. Whimsical stone pavers are teased by vibrant emerald grass. A swathe of green plants, shrubs and trees provides dynamic height and textural variations and

we love THE MULTITUDE OF GARDEN SPACES FEATURED WITHIN THIS HOME THAT SOMEHOW ONLY OCCUPIES A RELATIVELY SMALL FOOTPRINT creates the sense of an oasis nestled right in the middle of the city. “I love being in this garden, looking back at the rear elevation. The cycad in the brick planter looks as if it is folding the steel plate because of its own weight,” Damien says. Warm neutrals were chosen for the exterior building colours to not only satisfy local government planning considerations, but also to provide a soft backdrop for the changing garden hues. “Bricks from the demolition were repurposed to maintain a connection to its (the building’s) past life,” Damien says. This wasn’t the only nod to sustainability. The windows were double-glazed and the building reinsulated to retain internal temperature and reduce the need for heating and cooling. Internally, the home pays homage to its Victorian construction, with the entry opening up to a tapered staircase and an ornate chandelier emphasising the ceiling height. Period details were matched with playful design elements, such as traditional moulding arching around a modern artwork, and the contrast is a true delight. “Materials and tones were chosen for their warmth and sense of permanence,” says Damien.

The issue of light in the terrace was addressed by incorporating two sizeable skylights in the kitchen and Njoor-to-ceiling glass doors that open out to the courtyard. This also increases the sense of space in the building, as if the lines between home and nature have been blurred. A self-contained home oƯce/studio was another key renovation requirement from the homeowners as they transitioned into a life where working from home became more frequent. “The second half of the construction period coincided with the start of the global pandemic, and it was only the tenacity of both client and builder that ensured the construction was completed in time before the long winter of Melbourne’s extended 2020 lockdown,” says Damien. “Unbeknownst to us at the time, we had inadvertently created a model of what a post-COVID home could look like in terms of working from home patterns, private retreat spaces, communal areas and connection with nature as respite.” This clever design has truly resulted in a multigenerational family home that also provides an inner-city sanctuary — or, as Damien says, “an eclectic abode nestled into an urban garden”. WHEN RENOVATING A HOUSE THAT’S STEEPED IN HISTORY, DUE CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO PRESERVE THE DESIGN FEATURES

ander down a garden path Njanked by verdant hedges, luscious lawn and two towering palm trees and you’ll discover Killara house, a striking period building constructed in 1914 and located on Sydney’s Upper North Shore. This home is proud in its design style, with deljned asymmetrical gables, timber posts with simple decorative brackets supporting the substantial verandah, and white-painted window frames all earmarking this as a Federation bungalow-style home. There’s no denying this building is stately and proud, with a touch of romance in the mix, and it has served its occupants well. But while the original home was relatively well built, it had stopped meeting the needs of the current owners. They required space to accommodate multiple generations of one family, including the homeowners and their two teenage children, and a pair of UK-based grandparents who visit the family for extended periods. A secondary dwelling was to be constructed, with a link between the main house and the new accommodation critical to its success. In addition to this, the previous single-car garage was to be demolished and a new

two-car garage with attic studio (home gym) constructed, with a basement cellar running underneath it. Thorough internal renovations of the main dwelling were also undertaken, including the creation of a larger kitchen space, a new bedroom and laundry, and a walk-in robe and master ensuite. When renovating a house that’s steeped in history, due care must be taken to preserve the design features. An agreement was reached between Ku-ring-gai Council, the owners and their heritage architects to ensure all new work would match the original materiality and detail of the older home. In addition to this, the existing building fabric would need to be carefully repaired and upgraded to extend its lifespan. This would require a high level of skill to execute — which is where Lucas Stapleton Johnson Architects (pre DA) and Stewart Design Studio (post DA), along with Lawson & Lovell Building Services, came in. The clients were prepared to invest in the upgrade of the property to ensure the standard remained high. This is evidenced in the roof, where the entire existing surface was replaced using the highest-quality slate (Canadian Glendyne slate) with copper accessories such as beautiful vents. Care was taken to retain the original tall brick chimneys during this process, along with their terracotta pots. This level of care continued internally. From the joinery design to the lighting and ljttings and ljxtures, the Federation style was preserved. Recycled timber Njooring was sourced to match the existing Njoor. On the walls, blues, greens and greys were carefully blended, resulting in a calming colour palette that matches modern themes with historical style. This is particularly evident in the kitchen, where the blue-grey Shaker cabinetry perfectly complements the generous island bench topped with marblelook Caesarstone. High-quality ILVE appliances and extensive storage ensure this is a kitchen well suited to a modern family that still meets historical markers. A blend of textures, from the glossy tiles in one bathroom to the wainscoting and wallpaper in another, creates interest and again allows opportunities for the sense of period style to marry with a more contemporary ljnish. This respect for the past extended beyond the new design features to the original ljxtures. All existing pendant lights, for example, were refurbished and reused in various rooms to

minimise the purchase of new lighting. Skylights were also added in the kitchen, providing extra illumination and eliminating the need for daytime task light use. The secondary dwelling was located behind the building line of the primary home to minimise visual impact on the streetscape. Extreme attention to detail was necessary to ensure this secondary dwelling was sympathetic to the original Federation style. This presented several challenges, including matching the brickwork. After consultation with a brick supplier, a mixture of four diƪerent types of bricks was purchased so the new masonry closely resembled the existing ljnish of the primary dwelling.

Internally, exposed beams and ceiling trusses emphasise the steepled ceiling while adding a modern Njair. This creates a sense of grandeur, ensuring that while this home may not share the primary dwelling’s footprint, it certainly stands on its own. The buildings are linked via an undercover verandah that extends from the main dwelling. This allows for ease of passage between the homes and creates a sense of unity throughout the property. street to create space and visual impact without crowding or dominating the streetscape. “It bridges the building forms on either side and steps down to complement its heritage-listed single-storey neighbour,” says Justin Quinlan. The industrial building’s form is both eƯcient and beautiful, with the environmental systems celebrated and acting simultaneously as cladding, privacy screen, sun control and articulation. Minimalist landscaping, a cabana and water feature give the property a ‘50s Palm Springs modernist feel. This water feature is just one of many elements of the home that serve a dual purpose. It’s a water feature and also a pool. Likewise, the stairwell serves as a lightwell, and the open-plan kitchen, living and dining space opens up onto the patio, creating a haven for entertaining with an extended footprint. “Every millimetre of the house has a purpose. The arrangement of program and form are built around a ‘space of Njows’, allowing for a maximum Njuidity of transfer between spaces,” says Justin. To that extent, the building is comprised of three distinct volumes: a monolithic masonry form to the south containing the service functions, a glass pavilion at ground level housing the public and entertaining spaces, and

a Njoating timber- and louvre-clad box with the more intimate private spaces. “These forms are aligned with their respective boundaries to relate better to the neighbouring dwellings and the two intersecting geometries are hymned internally through lineal lighting and cladding,” continues Justin. “Programmatically, the building functions much like a modern townhouse, spread vertically over four levels that are eƪectively hidden within a two-storey building envelope. Each level has a traditional program appropriate to its location and is arranged around the vertical circulation to maximise privacy and amenity while minimising travel distance.” Circulation plays a key part in the design of the home, as does light. Expansive windows and Njoor-to-ceiling glass doors welcome in the sun. Feature lights shine around the space, with pendants draped over the dining table and brilliant circular beams illuminating the vehicles in the garage almost like a series of halos. Externally, warm lights are studded along the mid-section of the home, complementing the timber-clad exterior, and the garden and cabana are not forgotten, with this treatment ensuring they can be enjoyed at any time of the day or night.

“Every millimetre of the house has a purpose” — Justin Quinlan
Yet all this illumination doesn’t come at a great cost to the environment. “Sustainability was a key driver of the building design and articulation, with an entire roof of solar panels connected to batteries, a north-facing fullheight lightwell with integrated sun shading, substantial thermal mass anchoring the building, end-to-end cross-Njow ventilation, robust low-maintenance materials and enormous on-site retention tanks,” says Justin. This meant that civil and structural engineering played an integral role in the renovation. “The need to eƪectively Njoat a concrete box over the glass and stone podium demanded minimisation of structure throughout the ground-Njoor living areas; and being at the bottom of a natural gully with a subterranean living area demanded integrated pump-out tanks, absorption pits and drainage.” Technology was another key consideration in the construction of the building. When they employed The Quinlan Group, the owners listed minimal maintenance as an essential part of the design brief. As a result, advanced automation systems linked to hand-held devices control the day-to-day running of the home, and state-ofthe-art appliances are featured in the kitchen and laundry. Visually, the interior is contemporary and relaxed. Polished plaster and concrete, grey tiles, and oak Njooring and handrails create a sense of unity throughout and transform this abode into a sophisticated beachside dwelling. Every project has its challenges and this one was no diƪerent. The basement required extra attention to complete. “With Xypeximpregnated external skin, core-ljlled concrete internal skin, a drainage cavity, pump-out tanks, multiple pumps, electric and solar back-ups, integrated entertainment spaces, and joinery for the kitchenette and powder room, it took almost six months to complete,” says Justin. The results are clearly worth it, with the ljnal product a visual and functional success. HD thequinlangroup.com

A major advantage of opening your window to the inside is better access for cleaning. Flyscreens sit on the outside and do not interfere with the window operation. In the tilt position, such windows are much safer for small children than awning windows, and a childproof lock will allow adults to open the windows wide if required.
Where overlooking is an issue, clerestory windows can be used, either as ljxed or openable tilt-only windows towards the top of the wall, close to the ceiling. Such tilt-only windows are often used in combination with a picture window, either at the top, on the bottom or on the side for airNjow. Homeowners are sometimes limited by heritage overlays or existing street appearances that cannot change. While traditional doublehung windows are notoriously draughty, it is possible to enjoy all the advantages of modern technology with the look of yesteryear with

Paarhammer Heritage windows. Suitable for inner-city terraces, they help to create a quiet oasis where noise stays outside and draughts no longer exist, achieving high energyeƯciency and superior comfort, opening as tilt & turn windows while looking like traditional double-hung-style windows. Sliding windows can be draughty, but with lift-slide hardware, sliding windows can be made to function like lift-slide doors — energy eƯcient, soundproof and without draughts. Another option is the parallel tilt-slide window style, oƪering a tilt opening in addition to the
sliding opening. More expensive than tilt & turn windows, these sliding window options are suited for specially designed locations. Lift-slide windows can also be made to disappear into a wall cavity. High energy eƯciency, safety and sound protection increase comfort and are important to many homeowners. High-performance double- or triple-glazed windows and doors are getting ever more popular in Australia and Paarhammer custom-makes them locally in many styles, suitable for all kinds of buildings. ntering this spectacular home through a custom blackbutt door, guests are immediately consumed by the beauty of the view and the simplicity of the design. room, further emphasising the relationship between the exterior and interior of the home. Natural stone tiles and custom blackbutt vanities in the bathrooms also add to the earthy feel. The vast windows throughout make the most of the breathtaking views, while intelligent design invites and embraces the coastal breeze. Designer Jeremy McCulla from Urban Harmony Design has ensured the living areas of the home make the most of the northerly aspect, while also utilising the pool to reNject abundant natural light throughout the home. The superb openplan layout seamlessly connects the multiple levels of the house, with the open staircase ensuring the views remain uninterrupted.
The kitchen beckons the fussiest cook, incorporating slick Miele appliances throughout, Dolomite Super White benchtops, V-groove panelling and blackbutt cabinetry to complement the timber Njooring. This resort-style family home also considers its younger occupants, with a chic games room, a mudroom to reduce the clutter, and a pool complete with an underwater glass viewing window to the home. A dwelling of this scale in such a beautiful location deserves multiple entertaining spaces, and they don’t come better than the backyard ljrepit and modern wet bar. There is also a fully equipped gym and media room.
sponsored project The home limits its environmental impact through solar passive design and ventilation in conjunction with photovoltaic power generation and double-glazed windows. Intelligent home automation and programming ensures the dwelling operates eƯciently, with minimal wastage of resources. Having built many homes throughout Sydney’s northern beaches, Andrew Gremmo from Gremmo Homes was particularly excited by the opportunity this site presented. “The location of this home is incredible,” he enthuses. “After our original meeting with the owners, we knew they had a very clear vision of what they wanted to achieve. As the design of the house came together, we were certain this would become an amazing project — and it has. Harsh Australian coastal conditions as well as a challenging geotechnical landscape have all been considered in the engineering and construction of this home. Exposure-grade brickwork and ultra-steel rooljng will ensure the house can withstand the elements for many years to come. More importantly, the owners are just as ecstatic as we are with the completed home.” Integrated design, environmental consideration and attention to detail have ensured this stunning new home is now a landmark of the Turimetta Headland where it stands, and will remain so into the future. It also explains why this home was named the winner of the 2021 Master Builders Association Award for Design and Construct House $2-$2.5million HD gremmohomes.com.au

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Think out of the box when it comes to home heating
F
rom gas to wood-burning to electric — there are a number of options when it comes to heating, but which one is right for your home? Les Sperring, national sales manager at Herschel, answers a few questions about an innovative option that is gaining popularity: infrared heating.
HOW DOES HERSCHEL INFRARED WORK? Herschel infrared heats your home the same way the sun heats the earth. It uses far infrared energy to warm up the fabric of the building and all the things inside it, including you. This turns the very surfaces of your home into part of your radiant heating solution, delivering you a consistently warm and comfortable environment.
166
home design
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RADIANT AND CONVECTION HEAT? Simply put, convection heat is heating the air and moving it around the house. Radiant heat travels through the air and is instead absorbed by objects and the room materials themselves. Once the objects and room have been heated enough, they radiate the heat as well, and your whole room becomes part of the heating system, giving you a wonderfully cosy environment to enjoy.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF RADIANT HEAT? Heating the air is an ineƯcient heating solution because air cannot hold much heat. This is
why a cool draught can cool your room quickly, or if you switch oƪ your heater or heat pump the warmth seems to disappear. Convection requires that warm air continually be created to maintain a given temperature, so it consumes more energy. Using convection to heat a room, you need to heat the entire volume of air. And convection heat rises, meaning most of the energy you are creating is sitting over your head where you can’t feel it. The heat that does reach you gets chilled by your windows or absorbed into the cold surfaces of the room. This does not create an ideal environment for heating a person. If you’ve ever been in a room with a convection heater on and the air seems warm but your feet are cold, this is why.
sponsored product
Radiant heat, on the other hand, is ideal for heating people, as we are radiant ourselves. We absorb radiant heat into our bodies far better than when hot air is blown around us. Once the environment around us has reached our selected temperature, it is surprisingly easy to maintain a comfortable, warm environment lower in the room where you actually sit, without losing heat unnecessarily or being forced to run your heater continually. Have you ever sat in front of a ljre and marvelled at the way it heats you all the way through? This feeling is radiant heat at work. Herschel far infrared heaters get you this result with consistency, accuracy and the minimum of eƪort from you, making them a superior electric heating solution. Something else you may not have realised is that warm air attracts moisture. Heating the air inside your home actually contributes to moisture and dampness issues. Heating the home itself dries it out, reducing damp and mould.
DOES HERSCHEL INFRARED COST MORE TO RUN? Actually, no. When installed and operated correctly, it can be more cost-eƪective to warm your home over a 24-hour period than with a heat pump. Once your home is up to temperature, it radiates that heat back out slowly. When operated with a thermostat, the heaters will heat the environment, then switch oƪ and let your home radiate that warmth back, only coming back on to recharge it again. We call this running time the cycle time. Once your home is heated up, the cycle time drops dramatically over a 24-hour period. Depending on what your home is made of, this could be as little as four hours a day for a home that is warm day and night.
WHAT ABOUT POWER PROVIDERS? Home heating is estimated at being as much as 40 per cent of the peak load to the power network, coming in the evenings of course,
when we all get home from work and turn our heaters on high. With Herschel infrared, this load gets spread evenly throughout the day, warming up your home during the day to release that warmth into the evening.
WHAT ABOUT SOLAR POWER AND FREE HEATING? Herschel delivers exactly what you need – low wattage and the ability to heat up your home during the day while the sun is shining.
HOW ABOUT THE AESTHETICS? The good news is Herschel heaters look great – a slimline discreet panel that can be ceiling- or wall-mounted. Available in a range of styles, from white metal to black or white glass and even mirrors. For high ceilings we have a hanging pendant version, and we also have outdoor heating so you can enjoy the feeling of the sun on the patio long after it has set. HD herschel-infrared.com.au

The land itself was physically very diƪerent — the only similarity was the same grey concrete. The plants were diƪerent. The soil was red and crumbled in her hands. When she paints, Loribelle intuitively draws from diverse sources of inspiration which show a past that continues to live in her present, whether through religious imagery and storytelling or the feeling of being an alien in a foreign land. By ripping and cutting up these items, she is able to construct unique works of art that appear semi-realistic from a distance, yet abstract up close. She loves people to lose themselves in the artwork, scanning the fine detail to discover the text and images that intertwine to make these unique “paintings”. ROBYN SHAW 3/ Art and aesthetics have been important inNjuences in Robyn’s life from a young age, when she accompanied her father on his photographic escapades around the Sunshine Coast. She has lived there most of her life but has now moved a little further north to the Cooloola Coast. Connecting to the movement, energy and spatial relationships of a subject is what mostly engages Robyn, rather than appearance or likeness. She enjoys working from memory in the studio, where her focus shifts from the immediacy of the scene or ljgure to the remembered experiences that continually alter in her mind. Working intuitively means she is never sure of the outcome, so her engagement remains open, with alternate avenues to explore. robynshaw.net
BRAD HOLLAND 5/ In late March 2020, shortly after COVID lockdowns took hold, Brad was made redundant in his visual merchandising role after 15 years of service. With more time and freed from the day-to-day grind of work commitments, he produced a series of 20 purely abstract, almost non-objective paintings entitled 2020 visions. Instead of looking at the turmoil of current events, he delved into his own vision of the past to pull imagery from childhood memories of computer graphics. The resulting series is widely varied, with a consistent thread of exploration of self with an adherence to hard-edge masking techniques. Brad says David Hockney and Mark Rothko have inspired him in terms of their use of colour to heighten or subdue emotional intensity. He often looks for interesting or odd colour combinations in nature and in his head at night when he closes his eyes to go to sleep. bluethumb.com.au/brad-holland

uccessful online art gallery Art Lovers Australia opened in 2016 and oƪers around 30,000 curated pieces of art to browse through from approximately 1000 artists. A gallery was opened on the Gold Coast and another in Melbourne, which has art enthusiasts turning up in droves. The Melbourne gallery’s focus is showcasing local artists; however, it also exhibits works from across Australia in a wide range of mediums including painting, photography, collage and sculpture. Josh Simpson is the gallery coordinator and a practising artist with a Master of Fine Arts. “I really enjoy hanging work and considering the best way to display diƪerent pieces in relation to each other,” he says. “I also love meeting artists and getting to know their practices, which are always wildly divergent and inspiring.” Gallery assistant Amelia Pontifex

is currently completing her Master of Arts and enjoys getting to know each person who comes in and discussing the art on display. “It’s always interesting to hear what art means to other people,” she enthuses. Their favourite pieces include Carrie Pitcher’s work from Art Lovers’ inaugural exhibition, Unwrapped, at their Melbourne gallery. Bianca Gardiner-Dodd’s painting The Three Sisters is another work the duo loved from this exhibition. She is a contemporary Aboriginal artist, a Kamilaroi woman, whose artwork reNjects the coastal environments that surround her. The text-based works of Melbourne artist Shane Bonsujet are also well received; they are playful, instinctive and darkly humorous. This creative pair also share inspiring philosophies on art and life. Josh says he creates because he feels compelled to. “For me, art is about comprehension,” he adds. “If I don’t
understand something, I paint it in a bid to understand and engage with it further.” For Amelia, the creative process is wholly immersive. “Years ago, I read a quote that said, ‘Find what you love and let it consume you.’ It has always stuck with me and in many ways it reNjects my approach to writing about art and how I often allow myself to be completely absorbed by a work of art,” she says. In furniture and texture, Josh is drawn to minimalist or Scandinavian designs. “I like a simple interior that lets bright and bold artworks take pride of place in my home,” he says. Amelia is enticed by modern art and architecture. “I love mid-century designs and ljnd so much inspiration in the architecture of Robin Boyd and modern Australian architects,” she explains. ven while pursuing the culinary arts, Dylan has always been passionate about painting and being creative. It’s who he is, and has been, for as long as he can remember. Dylan describes his style as contemporary impressionism and he is passionate about experimenting with diƪerent styles and subject matter. “I enjoy the freedom to explore and feel it is the only way I can grow and develop as an artist,” he says. His preferred mediums are acrylic paint or oils on Njat surfaces, but his inquisitive nature and creative energy innately encourage him to explore further. “I have been known to use a variety of mediums and disciplines such as aerosol paint, sculpture, wax and print,” he reveals. As an artist, Dylan is inspired by the raw beauty of the world around us, as well as the human

condition and all its complexities. Tapping into his emotions can often be the premise for a thought process that evolves to become his subject matter, composition and colour palette. Every piece of work is a journey that at times can be frustrating and uncertain for him, but Dylan’s desire to create is innate. “When I’m not painting I’m thinking about painting, and when I’m painting, no matter how mixed my emotions are, there’s some indescribable sense of fulljlment that keeps me excited and makes me feel human,” he says. Among Dylan’s prized works are the series he painted as Artist in Residence at Halcyon House in 2019. They are also among his most popular to date. It was the beginning of a new chapter for his art practice, enabling exploration in technique, composition and subject matter.
In these works, the concept of beauty was explored in a very real and also surreal way. “I warped elements within the composition just enough to look aesthetically pleasing to the viewer, but ugly enough to notice, asking the viewer to question why or what is not right about the image,” he explains. When furnishing a home, Dylan says he pauses to ponder and is captivated by the humble chair. For him, comfort is key. “I especially like chairs that are either super plush or irresistibly comfortable, or old with interesting stories to tell if only they could speak,” he says. As he embraces his new career as an artist, Dylan’s professional goals are emerging. “I want to constantly evolve, learn and develop as a creative and as a human being,” he enthuses. ellness is a term that is often bandied about, but what does it really mean? At its heart is a core philosophy that living well is about actively pursuing good health in mind and body, while nurturing your spirit.
Going barefoot indoors obviously won’t connect you to the earth (unless of course you have an earth Njoor), but it does bond you physically in a very real way with the materiality of what is underfoot — and if that is a product derived from organic sources, that’s the next best thing.
THE FIRST STEPS TO WELLNESS
ORGANIC BY NATURE
Living well is about engaging your mind, fuelling your body with the right kind of food, pursuing gentle exercise and relaxing to rejuvenate. Creating a comfortable and restful space in your home environment goes a long way to achieving wellness. Start by taking oƪ your shoes. Not wearing your footwear inside does more than prevent bringing dirt, mud or germs into your home. In some cultures, leaving your shoes at the door and walking through a home with clean, bare feet is a sign of respect. It’s also good for your soul. When you are outdoors, going barefoot grounds you to the earth and connects you to Mother Nature in a very real way.
Timber Njooring is natural, robust and repairable. There are so many beautiful timbers — brush box, blackbutt, spotted gum, grey ironbark and more. Another wonderful advantage of timber Njooring is the imperfections, as each piece is unique. Just like in nature, no two trees are ever completely the same. Wool carpeting is luxuriously soft; it’s manufactured from sheep’s wool so it too is a natural product. Fibre rugs and carpeting like seagrass, sisal and jute are sought after, not only for their contemporary good looks but also because they check the box for organic products. Seagrass is grown under water and is highly durable. Jute is a

TEXTURE AND TOUCH Wellbeing is about connecting, feeling and nurturing. A Njooring material that oƪers comfort to your feet is healing. Wool carpeting is very resilient, is extremely durable as it’s a natural material, and it has elasticised properties so it is resistant to being trodden underfoot and showing uneven patterns of wear. It also feels wonderful, especially on a cold winter morning; your feet connecting with warm carpet is very soothing. Cork Njooring is soft and warm underfoot, which is why it can be a good choice for kids’ play areas, where tumbles and falls are likely to occur. It can also be installed on top of other Njoor materials and has a natural mould inhibitor. The texture of Njooring also creates a certain mood in a space. Tiles are a great way to deljne a certain tone, style or theme in a home. They’re available in a range of diƪerent contemporary materials as well as natural stone, including cool porcelain tiles, designer ceramic tiles, and tiles that replicate other materials including timber and concrete.

type of vegetable ljbre that’s soft and comfortable but won’t serve as well in high-traƯc areas as sisal, which is crafted from the agave plant and is very robust. Natural stone tiles like limestone, marble and travertine are also beautiful Njooring products derived from nature.

EARTH-FRIENDLY FLOORING What is sustainability? According to the Brundtland Commission report for the United Nations, it deljnes the concept as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability is tied to a wellness mindset because it is the health and wellbeing of the planet. Recycled timber is a sustainable and eco-friendly form of Njooring. Reclaimed or repurposed timbers, like those sourced from warehouses or wharves, have a story to tell and future generations can enjoy them as they will outlast many other types of Njooring. If you are thinking timber Njooring and are concerned about sustainability, sourcing certiljed sustainable timber is a good option. One of the most sustainable types is bamboo. The longer poles are taken when mature, leaving the younger ones for harvest when the time comes. It is extremely fast growing and bamboo absorbs carbon in the environment. Sisal Njooring is a highly renewable resource and during its processing, its

waste can be used to create bioenergy and ecological housing material.
EASY TO CLEAN Housework is an inevitable part of life, but minimising it where possible allows you to spend more time doing the things that bring you joy to boost your wellbeing. Opting for a Njooring product that requires minimal care is a step in the right direction. Timber is easy to clean — simply sweep or mop — but Njoors will need to be sanded over time. Engineered timber oƪers durability, board-size options including both length and width and laying patterns, and of course it is also easy care with a regular sweep and a slightly damp mop. New-look hybrid Njooring combines the beneljts of laminate and vinyl. It can be installed through the entire interior of a home, including wet areas, for a seamless look. Simply mop or vacuum as needed. Cool concrete is easy to maintain and keep looking clean. Plus, there are a multitude of applied techniques that can be implemented

to grind and polish the concrete from full aggregate exposure to none. Carpets are a little more work to keep clean and require regular vacuuming. Of course, there are also hypo-allergenic properties to consider. For those who suƪer from allergies to animal fur, particles, pollens and dust, wool carpeting, jute, sisal or seagrass are all natural products that can have better allergen inhibitors than manufactured products.
TOASTY TOES The warmth of timber underfoot is one of the reasons many people are drawn to timber Njooring. It simply feels good under your feet to walk on. One of the wonderful properties of carpeting is its feeling of opulence and luxury. Walking, sitting, even laying on wool carpeting can be a treat not only for your feet, but for your whole body. Tiles are beautiful to walk on and perfect for contemporary living spaces. If you live in a cooler climate, there are also underNjoor

heating options for tiles. Concrete, too, can be cool in winter, but hydronic heating adds warmth; concrete is a solid mass so it retains the heat. No matter what Njooring you choose, you can also add warmth and texture with a rug.
ACOUSTICALLY SPEAKING Environmental noise can contribute to negative health impacts such as stress and cardiovascular disease. Choosing Njooring with pleasing and calming acoustics is one way to lessen the impact of environmental sound.

Concrete is dense and acoustically it has advantages over lightweight materials when it comes to acoustic performance. It helps with sound separation between rooms and can also absorb airborne noise transmission within a space. Carpet has fabulous acoustic performance, absorbing sounds in a room. You won’t hear loud footsteps or chairs being scraped across a Njoor with carpeting. Cork Njooring has sound acoustic properties in terms of footfalls and also sound reNjection. Timber has reverberation properties and

does not dampen sound as much as other Njooring options. Strategically placed rugs can improve this aspect of timber Njooring.
JOYFUL COLOUR

Flooring colours also impact on the mood of a space. Dark-coloured Njooring creates a more intimate, soulful feel. It imbues a sense of drama or even elegance depending on the style of home. Light-coloured Njooring can create a classic minimalist feel or even a breezy beach vibe. Blues and greens will convey a sense of calm and coolness, which is soothing to the soul and boosts wellbeing in sleeping zones and spaces in the home that are quiet and contemplative. In contrast, Njoor coverings with red, orange and yellow will add vibrancy to a space so are perfect for areas where active play is on the agenda, like kids’ rumpus rooms. When choosing carpeting, the sky is the limit for colour choices. Buƪ and oatmeal hues, nut-brown, coƪee-coloured, greys, greens and many other variations are achievable, and that’s just the beginning. In timber, laminate and vinyl Njooring, there’s a vast array of colour choices to create the sort of look and feel that appeals to you, including lighter hues with blond tones through to timbers with warm copper, rustic greys and time-honoured mahogany shades. We take a look at the Șnalists the past six years, it has been featured in Grand Designs Australia magazine. Students are now able to present their designs digitally, allowing colleges and universities, both nationally and internationally, to compete. Each year, a community interest project is considered as part of the design brief — for example, Ronald McDonald House family unit accommodation, Cana Community homeless accommodation, Barangaroo House supporting indigenous communities, and Core9 ljtness wellness centres, to name a few. Last year’s brief was a live project, “Fire + Ice” Boutique Hotel in Wollongong, NSW, which was due to be built early this year. Each of the generous product sponsors support the project, with each student utilising all donated products in their design entries.

Fire + Ice Boutique Hotel, Wollongong The 2021 “International” design brief was to work with the hotel developers’ building speciljcations, supporting sustainability and the new “circular economy” movement. This design is directed by the actual build, allowing independent creative licence not to be restricted. “A circular economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Circular systems employ reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling to create a closed-loop system by minimising the use of resource inputs and the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions.” (Source: Wikipedia 2020). The hotel building complex reNjects modern boutique current and future lifestyle trends. The design should reNject living expectations learned and evolved over the past 12 months. The social, mental and physical needs of the “said occupant” are required to support the hotel design. As technology inljltrates our lives, the need for communication and gatherings is more important than ever. Traditional methods of communication are being snapped up through today’s overwhelming pressure of technology in society. The design will show communication innovation and oƪer a sense of purpose, balance, destination and aspiration. “Previous ljnalists have become some of Australia’s prominent interior designers and have worked on major commercial and residential projects,” says John. “It is also a privilege to see
they have become signiljcant clients of our partnering product sponsors, an important ingredient to any design brief. The Eussen Design Competition has worked with the major Australian interior design universities, colleges, TAFEs and institutes, so it makes sense to now take the competition globally.” The Eussen portfolio is now collaborating with Mozaik Play, an education marketplace for the creative industries. Mozaik Play connects students to the best creative colleges worldwide. Mozaik Play represents education faculties around the world in creative disciplines such as interior design, fashion, animation, graphic design, digital media, TV and ljlm, to name just a few. The education platform is changing and the creative disciplines are now making a strong impact in industry because of the increasing evolvement of technology and the virtual world. Technology needs the creative! “The creatives now have a voice,” says John. To quote Steve Jobs, “The best way to create value in the 21st century is to connect creativity and technology.” The 2022 design competition is the ljrst of the international projects where the students will design a creative expo incorporating both bricks and mortar and virtual components, the ljrst of its kind in this platform. Think of The Chronicles of Narnia ljlms and the fanciful components around this and that will be the students’ design platform of inspiration. Now let’s take a look at the 2021 ljnalists.

NELUKA JAYASURIYA FROM INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF COLOUR & DESIGN (ISCD)
Historically known as a centre for coal and steel, Wollongong’s hinterland consisted of coal mines despite the city bordering the Paciljc Ocean, with stunning escarpment views. There was a perception that the city was a rough, harsh, industrial place. The contrast of the harsh mines and softness of the ocean forms the basis for the concept of the Fire + Ice Hotel.
RECEPTION The design intends to recall this harsh industrial roughness by combining it with similar perceptions brought about through ice, and transforms it into a space where this notion can be celebrated. One can envisage an astounding
welcome to the hotel, where the ice element takes centre stage, stimulating the visitor with its materials, textures and blunt colour palette. Panels of twisted recycled aluminium scale the staircase void, similar to an iceberg at the edge of an ocean. This sophisticated and grand space immediately captures the attention, creates intrigue and connects with the visitor, while hinting at what might be in store by reluctantly unveiling itself through the illuminated, beaten recycled metal ceiling recesses that provide a sense of direction.
DELUXE BEDROOM Inspiration for the deluxe bedroom comes from the ancient blacksmiths who used to be
located in Crown Street. The main component — ljre — is used here in reduced intensity to bring in warmth translated by a colour palette, along with streaks of light bursting oƪ the ceiling and wall recesses, creating a theatrical appearance. This is further enhanced by the juxtaposition of the softness of the woven bamboo and fabric panels and the textured, dark-tiled walls. Layers are introduced through the use of sisal rugs, textured paint strokes, drapery and lighting ljxtures, creating a relaxed space that promotes a sense of intimacy. The introduction of glass walls for the toilet eliminates the visual barrier and extends the room beyond its conventional boundaries.
ROOFTOP BAR Proceeding towards the top Njoors of the hotel, ascending towards the pool on the attic level, guests will encounter the pool breakout space and bar. The fusion of ljre and ice blends the design into a Njuid-like nature in its layout. The curved forms of the Njoor coverings, along with the low ceiling, oƪer the guests a more intimate and relaxed experience This space suggests an almost Njoating sensation due to its openness and elevation. Natural ventilation oƪers catchup time, safer and suitable for current conditions. Once again, textures and lighting dramatise the space, bringing it to life.

YARAN FAN FROM RMIT UNIVERSITY
The hotel design is inspired by the name of the building — Fire + Ice — two contrasting and natural elements, reminding me of passion and calm, life and death, love and rationality, hot and cold, movement and stability. This building’s surrounding coastal location and beautiful Australian local environmental aesthetics were the main sources from which to generate design inspiration for this project. “Whale Fall” and “Bravo to Life” are separately tailored to the foyer area and the rooftop bar. They both use a common colour palette to present a unity but employ diƪerent colour ratios from the same palette to diƪerentiate their concept and theme. The “Ode to Garden” concept of the deluxe bedroom reNjects the earth we live in. It urges us to choose a greener lifestyle, return to sustainability and to protect the earth and its environment. Going Green is our choice and the only choice.
RECEPTION (“WHALE FALL” ICE LOBBY) This concept is inspired by “Life after whale fall”. When a whale dies, the story has just begun. The massive body sinks to the deep ocean Njoor, where it provides food for a deep-sea ecosystem. It reminds us that death means new life, like the new building nurtures all guests as a giant whale body. It is a new chapter. DELUXE BEDROOM (“ODE TO GARDEN”) This concept is inspired by a garden and nature aesthetic. To create a sustainable living
environment, a healthy lifestyle, green garden living and long-term lasting materials are important elements. Japandi style is used to emphasise simplicity, neutral minimalism and a calm atmosphere for occupants. Sustainability is the main concern. The room design and decoration have considered the eƯcient and eƪective use of space, and materials with lower pollution, such as linen fabrics, sisal carpet and bamboo rattan web screen have been used. Local suppliers who value sustainability, such as Arthur G, House of Bamboo, Westbury and Urban Lighting, were used.
The pool-out area is more casual, with a large screen to watch sport. Wine barrel tables in the casual area can be removed for any occasional events such as a music performance. The dine-in and waiting zone have spectacular coastal views.
ROOFTOP BAR (“BRAVO TO LIFE” FIRE ROOFTOP BAR) This rooftop bar concept is inspired from “the movement of ljre”. Fire gives us life, energy, love and courage. Humans cannot survive without ljre. Red and orange are the landscape colours of Australia — deserts and canyons. The design emphasises that we should all be brave in life, enjoy the moment whatever we are facing. The Njame never goes out. The bar is designed to serve multifunctional purposes. The Njoor plan demonstrates the overall space for the designed area. The space is divided into ljve parts that are connected: the pool-out area, casual drink area, dine-in area, waiting area and main bar. Decisive parameters for each part enhance functionality and accessibility, such as enhanced circulation to increase work productivity and orientation.

The inspiration for the design draws on a deeper meaning of Fire and Ice, with a focus on climate change and the interpretation of the earth’s melting polar ice caps and devastating bushljres. It’s an eye-opening story about the impact of climate change through the gradual transition of raw and natural materials into dark and charcoal hues to symbolise bushljres, and the metamorphosis of rigid structure into organic forms to signify the melting polar ice caps. RECEPTION The hotel reception tells a story of the eƪects of climate change through the materiality and colour scheme that has been applied. The warm timber transitions to a dark tile, symbolising the living and dead trees from bushljres. DELUXE BEDROOM The studio bedroom tells a story of the devastation that bushljres cause. As you enter the space, you are greeted with a warm, energetic interior but as you move through to the bathroom, this transitions to a darker and more intense space. ROOFTOP BAR The rooftop bar signiljes the Njuidity of the melting polar ice caps and this is further enhanced by the blue colour scheme.

Fire + Ice Hotel is a ljve-star boutique cafe hotel in the centre of Wollongong. The project is imbued with nature-inspired materials that bring visitors closer to the concept of the space — erosion. Both ljre and ice have the capability to cause erosion. Wollongong, located along the east coast, is aƪected by rising sea levels, which may cause coastal erosion. As a result, “erosion” has been chosen as the concept. Additionally, this may help raise environmental awareness for visitors to foster sustainability. The design concept utilises four keywords: naturalistic, contemporary, theatrical, luxury. RECEPTION The hotel foyer comprises the reception area and waiting area. The reception, as a focal feature, is designed with materials that depict the concept of “erosion”, such as warm-tone marbles, sedimentary rocks and metal (brass). It features
a contemporary minimalist design, allowing the materials to be the main focus. The foyer is designed so that people walking in to dine and guests waiting in the waiting area do not intersect with each other; this creates a
more pleasant experience. It’s made possible by having a black perforated metal panel segregate the spaces. DELUXE BEDROOM The room features a working desk, a wardrobe, a toilet and a queen-size bed facing out to the balcony to allow for a sea view. It’s designed to provide a sense of calm and comfort, with natureinspired materials such as marble, concrete, rock and timber. Decorative pieces made from crystals and stones are used throughout the space to enhance relaxation, positive energy, and promote a good night’s rest for the guests while still depicting the concept of erosion. ROOFTOP BAR The rooftop level has a bar, yard and seating area, with the bar designed like a cave to contrast with and accentuate the open space of the seating area. Greenery and water features are used to complement the design concept. HD eussen.com.au

o you remember your childhood kitchen? Perhaps there were long retro benchtops and drawers ljlled with all kinds of wondrous gadgets to whip up delicious food. You might have come home from school to the mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked bread, made chocolate-chip cookies from scratch and had Njour ljghts with your siblings, or helped your grandma ice pretty cupcakes for afternoon tea. In those days, the kitchen was often tucked into the rear of the home. Modern kitchens have evolved to meet the everchanging needs of growing families; many are big and welcoming, with lots of storage, appliances, and ample room to gather together. But one thing hasn’t changed. The kitchen is still the heart of the family home.
DESIGNING YOUR KITCHEN Planning a new kitchen is a balancing act between form and function, aesthetics and practicality. There are many ways to gather inspiration and ideas and once you do, collect the information and pop it in a folder for easy access. It could be things like kitchen

shapes, cupboard and handle styles, tapware, benchtop materials, splashbacks, colours and themes that you love. Once you have a rough idea of what you’d like to achieve, get a kitchen designer onboard to ljne-tune your plans. A kitchen designer will assess your lifestyle, budget, tastes, and how you plan to utilise the room. They can take it one step further to investigate how the kitchen will relate to the rest of the house so it is cohesive and Njows with the overall design and style. A great beneljt of enlisting the services of a kitchen designer is that after listening to your vision, they can help with any potential glitches, troubleshoot potential problem areas and suggest alternative options. An experienced kitchen designer will also have up-to-date product knowledge and be across new innovations in storage solutions and other important aspects.

edge. Building bespoke custom joinery allows you to create more available space and design speciljc storage solutions tailored to your needs in the kitchen. Clever kitchen drawer and cupboard conljgurations tend to favour more use of drawers, with traditional cupboards positioned in higher spaces. Amanda Smeekens, interior designer at Gremmo Homes, says there is lots you can do to manage organising and maximising space in the kitchen. “Your lifestyle should dictate how you live in your kitchen and you will be able to live more comfortably if you have enough storage space,” she says. “Drawers are becoming more popular for housing oils, condiments and spices — it makes sense to have these items close to your cooktop.” Amanda adds that “cool” drawers are also convenient for items that require refrigeration close to your work space. “You should also consider some multi-tasking drawer options,” she adds. “Kids will inevitably be completing their homework or doing some art and craft in your kitchen at some stage.” Need a few pointers on how to maximise storage? Amanda says there are many simple social media hacks available to ensure your own kitchen can be “Insta worthy. There are also some fantastic labelling options available. Organisation is key and everything should have its place — well labelled and stored within easy reach,” she advises.

The concept of a butler’s pantry has evolved into a must-have kitchen inclusion. It is, by deljnition, a secondary kitchen that is hidden away from the main kitchen, oƪering storage and preparation areas. Amanda says a butler’s pantry is a fantastic way to keep your main kitchen clean and free from clutter. “The additional storage space allows for more eƯcient food prep areas as well,” she says. “It’s also an ideal space for additional appliances that you may require for entertaining, and the perfect location for your dishwasher.”
KITCHEN BENCH

Island benches are an integral part of the blueprint for modern kitchens, creating an alternative dining space and a casual eating area where meals can be shared. Steve Hedger, director of Hedger Constructions, says the breakfast bar/island bench concept has evolved over the last decade or so. “Island benches have become bigger and are acting as a multipurpose space where people can gather, dine and study,” he says. “Discreet under-bench power and USB points are helping maximise the use of this space without clutter.” There are plenty of new looks and styles in kitchen benchtops to create the kitchen of your dreams. Amanda says organic shapes and curves, along with VJ panelling, are popular design inclusions right now. “Of course, the classics such as stone benchtops and natural timber will always be prominent,” she says. “Natural elements always work together to create a relaxed and comfortable space to share.” In kitchen benchtops, waterfall ends are still popular for many. This is where, instead of ljnishing with a traditional ljnished edge, the benchtop angles to 90 degrees and down the side of the cabinet. Steve says this look creates a deljnitive sense of style. “Waterfall-end benchtops are making an elegant statement in stone and polished concrete,” he says.
KITCHEN SPLASHBACK A kitchen splashback is an easy-clean decorative surface designed to keep the walls free from cooking spills. It also ties the look of the kitchen together and, in more recent years, has risen from the ranks to become one of the key elements to set the tone and style of the space. Steve says there are plenty of up-to-the minute new looks that can take your kitchen to the next level of style. “Printed images, coloured glass, stainless steel and exposed concrete are all great options for a high-impact splashback,” he enthuses. “There’s also strong interest in stone, granite and copper splashbacks for a more premium and natural aesthetic.”

ADD SOME SIGNATURE STYLE

There are many ways to spruce up your kitchen with decor. Invite nature in with a strategically placed plant in a pretty pot; a hanging plant adds a decorative infusion of colour and works well on a high shelf. Consider a glass cookie jar ljlled with seasonal treats and a decorative glass cake stand with a selection of homebaked (or store-bought) goods. Recover or update tired bar stools for a fresh new look. Open shelving allows you to display a handful of treasured cookbooks within easy reach. Kitchen art is another way to add a splash of colour to a drab wall. Choose art that picks up a colour or tone in your benchtop, cupboards or splashback, or throw the rule book out the window and go bold to create a talking point. Add some serious culinary clout to your kitchen with a practical but decorative knife block. Decorative bowls ljlled with fruit can encourage the kids to grab a piece as they breeze through the kitchen. Organic-shaped vases positioned on windowsills can be ljlled with fragrant blooms or anything you fancy — use them as storage vessels for kitchen utensils you’d like to display, or opt for a decorative kitchen caddy. Often it’s the simple things that can have the biggest impact. It’s important to be selective with any decor. The idea is to choose stylish and practical pieces without adding clutter.

These days, a modern kitchen is usually linked visually to internal living spaces, like the living room or family room and lounge space. Contemporary indoor living spaces often extend to outdoor areas, and often include part (or almost all) of a second kitchen. You might ljnd a complete outdoor kitchen with cooker, smoker, pizza oven, built-in barbecue, sink, fridge, dishwasher and more. Other kitchens have select elements like a barbecue to suit the lifestyle of those who live there. There could also be a lounge space, a bar and, of course, an alfresco dining space where you can eat outdoors. The furniture is comfortable and can emulate the materials and styles of those found indoors. The only diƪerence is they’ll be constructed from materials that are ljt for purpose, durable enough to not disintegrate, crack or crumble in the sun and rain. HD

pen plan yet classic period style, this new kitchen designed by Kitchens by Peter Gill is an amazing combination of modern, accessible design and heritage style. The clients’ brief was to design and build a period kitchen that embodied a high-quality look and feel. They also wanted the new kitchen to be very practical and easy to work in, and to add value to their home. The original kitchen was a U-shaped space with a Tasmanian oak pantry in one corner. This pantry was removed in the renovation in order to open up the space and create an expansive eƪect. The ljnal product is open and light and maintains a heritage feel. The design integrates appliances such as the fridge and dishwasher into the actual period-style cabinetry, keeping the overall look congruent and eƪective. The addition of an island bar created more work space as well as space for eating and relaxing. This kitchen is ultimately practical and period-style, deljnitely adding value to the home as a whole. visually striking new kitchen renovation by Peter Gill, this space exudes character and an eclectic sophistication. The design combines soft-timber ljngerpull handles and dark metal porcelain tops in the Inljnity range to create a harmonious yet striking contrast. The strong use of metals within the ljxtures, benchtop and appliances adds to the industrial style, while the appliances are semi-integrated to continue the use of metals throughout the room. The kitchen space was originally half the size as a wall separated the living and kitchen areas. Once this wall was removed, it allowed for a more open-plan design with an exceptional amount of natural light radiating

throughout the space. It also enabled the inclusion of a bar area that integrates with the kitchen. The bar is one of the main features of this space, with its pocket-door system enabling the area to be hidden if needed. There is also a hidden wine rack between the fridges and the bar directly under the beam, which adds a cool element to the space. Another plus to this kitchen space is the exceptional amount of storage in the base cabinets and the tall cabinets. Easy-use Revo units were used in the corner cabinets. Stark-black two-pack in a satin ljnish was used for the cabinetry, making it the bold focal point of the room. The use of timber features including the matching kickboards creates
symmetry with the cabinets, and by using open timber shelving above the cooktop, the room continues its spacious and open atmosphere. The window behind the sink was completely replaced with a bifold window system that can be opened to the outside when needed. The benchtop continues to the outdoor area to create a perfect spot for stools when entertaining. Pops of colour take centre stage via the splashback tiles that have been selected, adding character and vibrancy. The space has also been designed to have separate zones which include cooking, preparation and washing areas — an ergonomic design enabling minimised traƯc throughout the kitchen. HD

The reworked L-shaped layout enjoys more user-friendly work zones in its new incarnation. The under-bench oven was replaced with two oven towers, giving the client the capacity to cook for family and friends with ease. All the appliances were moved up to bench height, including a dishwasher that was sourced to include a lift-up shelf that rises to the same height as the counter. he style is in the detail with this beautiful renovation by Attard’s Kitchens & Cabinetry. Despite the small space, the unique materials and minimalist style give the area an air of grandeur. Although the kitchen is cosy in size, the clients wanted it to leave a lasting impact on whoever visited the space. This can be a challenge if the area is small as designers need to be very careful with placement and products so as not to reduce the amount of free space even further. Everything inside needs to have a purpose and the builders have executed this Njawlessly.
What we truly love about this room is how complementary every element is to the other. The mix of light brown, grey and white throughout works in seamless harmony, providing a subtle neutral palette that’s pleasing to the eye without being overpowering. Meanwhile, the use of organic materials — especially stone, timber veneer and brass — enhances the calm feeling that permeates every corner in the room, making the kitchen an ideal area for get-togethers and putting guests at ease when entertaining. The architectural detail is reminiscent of opulent kitchens you’d normally see in
the Hollywood homes of celebrities. Prior to the redesign, the space looked tired and unoriginal. But the renovation by Attard’s Kitchens & Cabinetry gave new life to the outdated area, utilising the beauty of clean lines and patterns to provide a luxurious yet relaxed feel. Red Gum Blossom on Flowering Australiana (79.3 x 104.7cm, oil on canvas)
1/ FLORAL ART Alicia Cornwell’s work is inspired by decorative Njorals and still-life painting. Her works incorporate her love of vintage and antique items, Njoral botanicals and the environment around her. “I love experimenting with the patterns of the fabrics and the way they contrast against still-life compositions,” she shares. “I use the Njoral scenery around me as inspiration, as well as the antiques I have collected over the years. I especially love the old fabrics and vintage sheets and the way they Njow and move. I spend a lot of time researching my works. I use whatever Njowers are in season and I look at what fabrics work well. I map everything out. The intricacy, the simplicity and the elegance.” Alicia’s artworks are available at artloversaustralia.com.au. 2/ HOT PROPERTY Innovative and impeccably crafted, Brunner products are developed and manufactured in Bavaria, Germany.
