Sometimes called a cutting brush, it easily covers corners, edges, and everything else. Nylon and polyester bristles work best with water-based paints, the common choice for furniture projects. (Oil-based is for surfaces that get wet, like a kitchen table.) Pros prefer brushes by Purdy, Wooster, and Zibra.

The real deal is gorgeously intricate, but at a pretty price; stencils in flower-and-leaf motifs and geometric patterns deliver the design for a whole lot less. It’s popular with DIYers for good reason: The thick consistency makes it less likely to drip than other formulas, and its forgiving, velvety matte finish looks fantastic no matter what (some people don’t even prep). Thorough prep helps achieve the smoothest result. Megan DeLong of Meg Del Design uses Krud Kutter degreaser for a deep clean, repairs knicks with wood filler, and roughs up the surface with fine (180 to 220 grit) sandpaper to help paint bond to it. “Between coats and at the end, I use superfine sandpaper to get rid of imperfections without removing too much paint,” she says.

Party on your piece! That’s kind of how dots feel, right? You can buy a stencil, make your own by tracing a circle onto cardstock and cutting it, or use a cup to outline the shape right on the furniture. No need to plan anything out: A random pattern is always whimsical, says Connie Clarke of Faff Designs, who painted this little chest mauve before going the homemade stencil route. Two-and-a-half-inchers like these appeal in any room; smaller or larger dots are cutesy for a kid.

A flowy pattern mellows a room. Chelsea Ogglesby of River and Oak Living created a mountain scene, inspired by the piece’s bird-shaped pulls (try Knobpologie for gold bird knobs). After penciling in the design, she outlined the edges of each section with acrylic paint, then filled them in. PAINTS

A flash of gold is a glam touch. Consider using liquid gilding to coat the corners of a piece’s frame to mimic brass accents, or stenciling a border around the hardware of drawer fronts. Or just remove the pulls and spritz with metallic gold spray paint for a quick hit of glitz.

Enlist ordinary household items to create special effects: Dip a crumpled rag in paint and press onto furniture for a crinkled finish, cut a kitchen sponge into a shape to use as a stamp, or doodle away with permanent marker.
K

Don’t feel like you have to stick with the same texture or shape as the previous kinds. If possible, buy a few types, try them out, then return the rejects.

Should there be less than a quart left, pour it into a small container that seals tight, like a mason jar. You will thank yourself later for labeling it with its name and the room you used it in. Store it in a cool, dry, and dark spot indoors—extremely high or low temps could mess with the consistency.

VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, chemicals that can cause reactions such as headaches or eye irritation. Typically, low-VOC paint has fewer grams of VOCs per liter than traditional paints do, while those labeled zero-VOC may contain trace amounts. Other eco-friendly options furniture flippers rely on: chalky paint, milk paint, and mineral paint.

Marble tabletops may be totally timeless, but you can get the look in a weekend—with paint. Dani Wrishko of Just Paint It! by Dani did the legs in gray and tabletop in white, waited till they were dry, then brushed on one squiggly gray line at a time with a variety of shades she made by mixing the gray and white paints. While the lines were still wet, she dipped a clean brush in water and feathered them. “Let your inner artiste come out!” she says.

Ombré furniture remains an Instagram fan fave. When you paint something unexpected—an old piano, a coatrack in an entry, the base of a bed, the inside of an armoire—it’s a thrill every single time you lay eyes on it. When you’ve given furniture PLC (paint loving care), you’ll want to protect your handiwork with a sealer. Wax has a silky finish. “If you use chalky or milk paint, I’d recommend a wax sealer for a casual feel,” says Ashley Harding of Vintage Refined. Because a poly sealer dries harder, stick with it for anything that’ll touch water or food, like dining and coffee tables. Use a natural-bristle wax brush to apply wax (microwave it for a few seconds to soften it) and a foam roller for a poly sealer.

If you’re game to make a small investment, a paint sprayer can speed up the job. Here’s when to consider using one:
•
To paint an entire table and chair set. Tote everything outside, set on a drop cloth, and go to it.
• •
To paint wicker or rattan. The sprayer will get in there! To paint anything, when you get the hang of it; after a few times, you’ll feel like a pro.
PAINT: TRAVIS RATHBONE
Attention, newbies! YouTube is full of beginner tutorials on how to set up and maneuver a sprayer.

After Connie Holden of Flourish: Your Space Thriving painted this piece (inspired by the colors in her transfer from retail.redesignwithprima.com), she waited 24 hours and applied each piece one at a time. She removed the backing and rubbed on the transfer using the tongue-suppressor-like tool that came with the kit. “It literally transfers the image on,” she says. PAINTS

If the piece you’ll be painting is in sweet shape and you want to show it off, “let some of the original character shine through,” says furniture artist Melanie Hutton, who does this a lot in her work. The contrast is really cool. She left sections of her geometric design and the frame unpainted on this teak console, but you could also leave entire drawer fronts or doors undone. For the paints used in this project, see Paint Index.

Mixing H2O into a water-based white paint can give a wood piece that desirable weathered effect by letting the grain show through. People typically do one part water to two parts paint. Try not to overthink the brushstrokes; the less perfect, the prettier. Designer Gunta Sandmeyer of Boulevard Interiors got the look on this headboard with plaster paint (from The Plaster Paint Co.) that, once it was dry, she distressed with antiquing wax.

It’s fun to do the X’s one shade of a color and the chair a lighter or darker shade—and you can alternate the look in a set. Or paint only the X’s and leave the chair its existing color. Water-based paint takes 3 to 4 hours before it’s fully dry and ready for a second coat, and oil-based paint, 24 hours. If you absolutely can’t resist a touch test, do it on the back of the piece, in case it smudges. Speed up drying by keeping a fan on and the windows open as you work and after. It’ll be one to a few weeks before paint fully cures (dig a fingernail into an inconspicuous area to check that it doesn’t dent). Meanwhile, avoid putting heavy objects on top.
hold up A few FYIs before you set out to buy an old piece to paint Whether you’re browsing the flea market, debating clicking “purchase” on Craigslist, or wondering if you should accept a hand-me-down from family, ponder these points. What kind of wood is it? Cedar can be oily, and its color may bleed through paint, so you’ll first need to use a stain-blocking primer, says Connie Holden. Teak, rosewood, and burled wood are prized varieties that may be worth more unpainted. Not sure of the type of wood? Check the piece for a manufacturer stamp and do an online search. “But at the end of the day, if you want to paint the wood, paint it,” says Connie. Whatever look is most valuable to you is what matters.
Z
Do you like the overall shape? Sometimes, people get caught up in the excitement of rescuing a find and neglect to consider the whole piece. “Look beyond the hardware and the scuffs or dings you can change or fix,” says Ashley Harding. “Focus on the lines and shape, because those are there forever.”

The hip cousin of the stripe can take years off furniture. Choose a uniform chevron, like the dresser above has, or vary the sizes for a wilder pattern. The main effort lies in taping off the ’zags with painter’s tape; use the delicate surface kind on a painted piece. Remove while the paint is still slightly wet, and voilà! PAINTS

Asparagus Fern, both by Dunn-Edwards
How’s the upholstery? If it’s ratty or torn, factor in the cost of new fabric and having the piece reupholstered—or the time involved for figuring out how to do it. Will it be tricky to paint? Items that have detailing (picture an engraved floral design or turned wood legs) are going to take longer.

black houses? HGTV stars shed light on a color trend that’s sweeping the nation. Why is black paint so hot? “Because it looks really good. Black is timeless, yet it also makes a striking statement. Lately there’s been a bit of a domino effect. People spot one or two houses painted black in their area, and they think, ‘That’s cool. I’m doing it too.’ ” —Luke Caldwell, Boise Boys
Paint color: Caviar by Sherwin-Williams
Does it work on any house? “I tend to paint newer houses black because the modern aesthetic is a great fit, but it can completely update an old home, too, especially ranches. For a historical Victorian, I’d suggest doing a fun color on the door, like teal or yellow, to lighten the mood.” —Jenny Marrs, Fixer to Fabulous
Paint color: Off-Black by Farrow & Ball
HGTV Magazine 39

Wouldn’t dark paint make your place hotter inside? “Even though darker houses absorb more sunlight than lighter-colored kinds, the effect on the interior temp varies greatly depending on how much shade and sun a house gets. Though it may cost more to cool a black house in summer, it can lower heating bills in winter. I wouldn’t call it a deal breaker.” —Leanne Ford, Home Again with the Fords
Paint color: Starless Sky by PPG Paints
Paint color: Urbane Bronze by Sherwin-Williams
Do you always have to use black paint? “Not at all! Houses that appear black are sometimes navy, slate, or deep brown—I did this one in a dark gray with brown undertones. Hard to tell, right? Your roof may go better with one of those colors.” —Jasmine Roth, Help! I Wrecked My House
40 HGTV Magazine
Paint color: Black by Benjamin Moore
Contrasting trim or monochrome: How do you decide? “It depends on the vibe you want. A full-on black home is contemporary, while white trim can lean traditional. On this house, we left the wood natural on some siding shingles and the porch frame, and it really stands out.” —Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas, Bargain Block
How does it look at night? “You might think a black house would disappear into the darkness, but not if you have good exterior lighting. That’s why I illuminated the span of this townhouse with two sconces by the door and another way to the left. You could additionally consider uplighting from the ground. And remember, interior lights create a soft, gorgeous glow at night.” Paint color: Cracked Pepper by Behr
—Alison Victoria, Windy City Rehab Catch all-new episodes, Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV.
What if you’re scared to commit? “Gain confidence by uploading a photo of your exterior to an online paint visualizer to see it in black. You could also consider painting the main body of the house black and doing other architectural elements in white—opposites attract! And if you’d like to further soften the black, natural elements like wood accents and stone are a great choice.”

As long as you’re dishing it out, that cute little doorstep diner will take it—only she may belong to someone who’s been searching for her. “Lost cats are often found within blocks of their home,” says Becky Robinson, president of the nonprofit Alley Cat Allies. Snap a pic and post it on local sites. Some kitties have microchips implanted in the back of their necks with their human’s contact info; a local vet or animal rescue can do a free scan. A rescue group could also take her in, should your search turn up empty. If you do want to keep providing, serve cat food and fresh water but not milk—it isn’t good for their tummies.

how bad is it if you can’t resist the bread basket? Enjoy the occasional indulgence, assuming you don’t bogart the baguettes from ravenous tablemates. “If I’m eating at a restaurant where bread is baked from scratch, I’ll go for it,” says nutritional psychiatrist Uma Naidoo, M.D., author of This Is Your Brain on Food. Consider whether it’s truly worth the splurge—crumbly white bread with cold pats of butter that refuse to spread, not so much. Dr. Naidoo is a fan of whole-grain kinds laced with nuts and seeds, for the bonus nutrients. Planning to have a cocktail? Those rolls can pad an empty stomach so alcohol won’t get absorbed overly fast. When it’s time to order an entrée, skip the pasta and have salmon, chicken, or another lean protein to dodge a total carb coma.

Besides the fact that an overeager neighbor’s habit can stink, it’s a total curb appeal buzzkill. “And no one wants to have animals rummaging around their trash cans or come upon lasagna strewn on the sidewalk in the morning,” says Patricia Rossi, author of Everyday Etiquette. This may also go against town or homeowner association rules (if that’s the case, alert the board and let them deal with it). To confront someone without feeling like Oscar the Grouch, “casually mention your concern about garbage-pickers roaming the streets,” says Rossi. Basically, blame the raccoons.

Unless you want to spend your summer thinking that everyone’s grass is greener, don’t do it. Turns out that even plucked ones can proliferate. “Weeds have seeds in them, and when you toss them onto your grass and then walk or mow over it, they spread,” says Chris Lambton, host of Yard Crashers. That applies to flowering kinds such as dandelions and thistle, as well as grasslike varieties including crabgrass and nutsedge. Although the pull-and-fling method may seem convenient, it’ll cost you time, effort, and money. Chris dumps weeds into an old painter’s bucket, but any container or bag will do. “I put on a podcast when I’m out there,” he says, “to make it relaxing.”

how bad is it if you’ve never figured out how to put on a duvet cover? “Without the right technique, it can require the coordination of an Olympic athlete to manipulate all that material!” says Melissa Maker, host of Clean My Space videos on YouTube. And because it’s not a chore you tackle often, you’re always rusty. A favorite hack: Lay the duvet flat on your bed. Turn the duvet cover inside out and slide your hands into the top corners. With your hands still inside the duvet cover, grab hold of the top corners of the duvet and flip the cover right-side out, shaking it until it shimmies all the way down (“no shame if you stand on your bed for this part,” says Maker). Secure the buttons, then head to the medal ceremony.

uilding houses for a living has its pros and cons. Pro: You get to know the best-looking paint colors and materials, and you make people happy. Con: Your wish list for your own space keeps growing and growing. “We were craving more storage—we’re always giving people walk-in pantries!—and we wanted a great outdoor space,” says Mika Kleinschmidt. She and her husband, Brian, are the power couple behind
HGTV’s 100 Day Dream Home. Last year, they set out to build a 3,350-square-foot place on the water in Ruskin, FL. They were in the throes of filming season 2 and made their house one of the show’s 100-day projects...while simultaneously working on seven others. Being the true pros at time management and design that they are, they pulled it off. “Honestly, when we go on vacation,” says Brian, “we’re eager to get home because this is better.”
paint color KITCHEN Mika and Brian used blues throughout the house in tribute to the water and clear Florida skies. Here they took full advantage of wall space, putting in cabinets to the ceiling; glass fronts show off dishware. Pendants made of whitewashed wood and satin nickel by Kichler are both beachy and sleek.

he first thing Michael Thackeray and Sameer Gopulay did after they got the keys to their Palm Springs, CA, retreat: “We grabbed chairs left by the previous owner and put them in a big circle by the living room,” says Michael. “It’s where guests immediately gravitated, so we knew we were onto something.” A pal jokingly dubbed it “the circle of love,” and the name stuck. When the couple decided to renovate their 2,500-squarefoot home, built in 1958, they upgraded the special space—and everything else—with the help of designer Michelle Boudreau. Original tongue and groove ceilings were patched and repaired, and sleek terrazzo floors poured. Then they layered in funky mid-century-modern pieces and the couple’s vintage treasures. Michelle even incorporated the circle theme. Says Sameer, “Everyone feels comfortable and relaxed here.” Says Michael, “Every hour is happy hour!”

w
hen Abby and Jonathan Webb were searching for a house around Lexington, KY, it took no time for them to decide on this one. Located in a walkable neighborhood and built in 1908, it was completely renovated and bigger than they’d expected to find at more than 4,000 square feet. Given some of its grand features, like double front doors and a marble floor in the kitchen, they made sure their relaxed style came through. “To us, a place that looks nice but where you can plop down and put up your feet feels like home,” says Abby. Working with designer Isabel Ladd, they filled it with welcoming materials and notably friendly colors like blue, yellow, and pink. “Both of us garden and spend a lot of time outside, so we wanted to bring that organic feel indoors,” says Abby. And if they trek in a little dirt, well then, they’re just living the life. With a colossal portico and its stucco exterior, the house was already beautiful. An edible garden cultivated a wild side.

The table, by Gabby, is an easygoing combo of wood and metal.

A traditional checkered marble floor was OK with them. “We appreciate that it’ll look good years from now,” says Abby. Rattan counter stools by Gabby loosen it up. A pot rack is always a downto-earth feature, and it gets style points for the coordinating stainless steel cookware. 90 HGTV Magazine

sitting area The best part of the main bedroom for Abby is this bonus space that beckons her to sit and do phone catchups. It’s outfitted with a rattan daybed from World Market and a wicker egg chair by Selamat, plus a pink-y rug by Jaipur Living laid over a diamond sisal rug by Fibreworks. A porcelain plant stand (Walmart has a look-alike) keeps books handy, and it’s a nice patch of forest green.

The worn look of the original exposed brick is part of the character. Isabel brightened the room with red buds on a duvet cover and shams by Ballard Designs, a sunshine-y mirror (Kouboo has a similar version), and blue and white lamps from Target topped with pink pleated shades from Ballard Designs.

The painted and speckled hardwood floor is a fun feature that’s impossible to scuff up.

front yard potting shed The couple converted the garage into a multiuse space for gardening, storage, and hangouts with friends. “We’re out here year-round—it’s covered from rain, and we can plug in heaters when it’s cold,” says Abby. Almost everything, from the garden tools hanging neatly on the wall to the bar cabinet, is used or vintage for an old farmhouse feel.
Before, there was only grass and a few bushes on either side of the path. Now, it’s an oasis! Garden designer Jon Carloftis planned out a blend of native flowers and plants that includes some 15 kinds of herbs and vegetables like cilantro, kale, radishes, broccoli. It’s less manicured than a regular lawn, and more enjoyable to care for. Tasty, too. Or, as Abby says, “We don’t mow our yard, we eat it!” FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 116.

• Consider the style: Louvered ones look classic,
board and battens are farmhouse-y, Bahama ones have coastal cred. The shutters should each measure the height of the window and half the width, so it appears as if they would completely cover it if shut. Aluminum is a popular alternative to wood classics like these: more durable, less pricey.

QUEEN ANNE ELEMENTS, like the wraparound porch and turret, are typical of an architectural style that’s all about excess. Peep the corbels and that dentil molding, too. ORIGINAL HARDWOOD SIDING, discovered under white cement after Parthy Monagan moved in, was in near-perfect condition. Greige paint is chic and practical: “With our red clay soil and hot, dry summers,” she says, “you don’t want anything outside painted white-white or it gets orangey fast.”

ike any couple, Jay and Ta’mora Fuhrmann don’t agree on everything. He likes things tidy, she’s OK with mess. He’s happy to eat grilled cheese for dinner, she likes to experiment. He’s a disciplinarian, she’s known to cave at the batting of their boys’ eyelashes. When it came to updating the kitchen in their 1960s split-level in Edina, MN, though, they were on the same page: She would make the big design decisions. “Ta’mora is really creative and into color,” says Jay. “I trusted her vision, as long as it included a beer and wine fridge!” The two also unanimously wanted an open floor plan for their own family and their famous 40-person holiday dinners. Renovators Heather and Brad Fox of Should I Stay or Go? handled the overhaul, which included taking down the wall adjacent to the formal dining room to double the kitchen’s square footage and redoing the oak floors. Ta’mora and Heather came up with the funky design and that all-thecolors scheme. “Occasionally I’d hold up a wild wallpaper or bold piece of art, and Jay would chime in with, ‘That’s going too far!’ ” says Ta’mora. “I had to be convinced a few times, like with the backsplash,” says Jay, “but it all turned out incredible. Especially the bar.”

cabinets “White lower ones gave us a neutral base to play around elsewhere,” says Ta’mora. Forgoing uppers meant a less kitchen-y, more hangout-y feel. homework, and craft projects happen here, and the Fuhrmanns went big: This one’s 9 feet wide and 5 feet deep. Like the tile, the white quartz countertops are matte—when there’s already plenty of pizzazz, you can skip the glossy finish. The counter stools are from Overstock.

Taking Jay’s request for a beer fridge seriously, Heather transformed an old pantry outside the kitchen into a bar. Bye-bye, bifold doors, hello, margaritas! She put in an arch and wood shelves that match the kitchen ledge. Porcelain tiles with a caning pattern, from 41zero42, were Jay’s triumphant pick. The bartender: Ta’mora.
