Maximise your space with smart storage and clever designs

1BUILD STORAGE AROUND THE BED Bespoke wardrobes are the most effective way to maximise your bedroom storage. Building them at either side of the bed creates a smart frame while leaving the other walls free of obstructions that take up valuable space, so they can be used for artwork or mirrors instead. You could capitalise on the space further by creating storage above the bed; just be careful not to make the decor feel claustrophobic with too much going on.

LOOK TO FURNITURE THAT PROVIDES FORM AND FUNCTION
Think laterally about how to free up space. Can your small bedroom have wardrobes in the hall outside, with dressing room appeal? Challenge your preconceptions, but ensure any solution is practical. Another route is to go for a statement bed and little else, as shown here. Choose a design that offers lots of built-in hidden storage or space beneath for boxes and vacuum bags.
3USE BRIGHT COLOUR TO OPEN UP THE ROOM An uplifting shade, such as sunshine yellow, will invigorate any small room – just be mindful of how you use it. Painting up to mid-wall height will help to anchor the colour to the bottom half of the room, while finishing the rest of the painting in a bright white or similar neutral shade will keep the overall look airy and spacious. Allow your chosen colour to determine a tonal palette for bedding, accessories and rugs to create a cohesive scheme.

CHOOSE A HEADBOARD THAT DOUBLES AS HANDY STORAGE SPACE
Where space is in short supply, ditch the usual flat or upholstered headboard and opt for a style like this instead. It offers a surface and convenient storage niches for books, a clock and a glass of water, and incorporates narrow side cupboards, which means you can do away with bulky bedside tables. Go one better and install wall lights in lieu of bedside lamps to free up more surface space.
