WORDS FROM THE EDITOR

You know that day when you wake up and think “there’s got to be more to life than this”? As you climb out of bed and begin your daily routine you’re yearning for a change, a holiday, an escape, or even an experience that takes you somewhere new. Maybe start a health kick or take up a new hobby. You feel it’s time to push new boundaries and take life by the proverbial! Even if you’re the happiest and most content person on the planet, I’m sure you have the desire to continue to feed your soul and release some adrenalin. Everyone wants to explore new locations, meet new people and enrich their life. Well, it was that awakening (and desire) that was the inspiration (and catalyst) to create Spa & Wellness. On the surface we might look like a shiny, light-hearted health and travel magazine, but dig a little deeper and we’ll take you to places - geographical, mental and physical - you’ve never been to before…. We want to inspire you to get off the treadmill - if only for a moment - and do something for you. When was the last time you did that? It’s time to put a big dose of vitality and wellness into your everyday life.... enjoy! Kris Abbey Managing Editor

ONE WYBELENNA MAGNESIUM POOL

The original home at ONE WYBELENNA Brookfield, Brisbane, was designed and built in the 1960’s and became an iconic home in the area. After acquiring the property in 2008, Heather Sartain developed a design that totally redefined the property, while respecting some key original elements. The aim was to redevelop the 2-acre property into a spacious and tranquil space with a contemporary feel. Her vision was to bring together her experiences and knowledge of health and wellness gained over the years to create a unique and beautiful holistic day spa retreat. And she nailed it! The five bedrooms were cleverly converted into spacious treatment rooms, the garden landscaped to ensure plenty of quiet, relaxing escapes, and the beautiful outdoor magnesium pool and spa are the backdrop to every treatment room. Brisbane, how lucky are you to have this boutique health and wellness Spa in your surrounds? onewybelenna.com

Due to increasing levels of stress, as well as a greater understanding of brain science, the relationship between mind and body is getting clearer. YOGA FOR ALL AT ALILA SOORI

Poor diets, constant stress and hours hunched over glowing screens are taking their toll on kids. This year look for more mindfulness and meditation in schools, kid-focused yoga classes, massage for toddlers, wellness-centric family vacations, or just an emphasis on local, organic eating, as parents reveal themselves willing to dedicate considerable time, attention and, yes, money toward this niche that promises to be one of the industry’s most significant areas of growth. Leading the trend: The David Lynch Foundation’s Quiet Time meditation program and family-friendly and wellness-centric Six Senses resort in Laamu Atoll in the Maldives.

ESCAPE: THAILAND

01 E VA S O N H UA H I N & S I X S E N S E S S PA Stop looking for a destination that suits everyone: families, couples, wellness warriors and the solo traveler…. Yes, it does exist… and I’ve found it!

WORDS: KRIS ABBEY

JUST A SHORT 25-MINUTE DRIVE SOUTH OF HUA HIN (WHICH IS A G R E AT T O W N F O R S H O P P I N G A N D E AT I N G 230 KILOMETRES SOUTHWEST OF BANGKOK , AND THE OLDEST BEACH TOWN OF THAILAND), THERE IS A TINY SQUIDFISHING VILLAGE CALLED PRANBURI, ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF WHICH IS THE D E S T I N AT I O N F O R A L L T R AV E L E R S A L I K E .

Just to backtrack, a girlfriend and I (let’s call us chalk and cheese) decided we needed a getaway together. She lives in Perth and I’m in Sydney, so a tropical destination without too much time spent on a plane or having to make big time-zone adjustments was the main criteria for the ‘where’. I wanted wellness; she wanted wine (ok, I was happy with the wine too). She wanted to dip her toe in a ‘healthy style’ of holiday, but not so far that coffee, cocktails and chocolate would be contraband. I wanted a great Spa and the opportunity to do some physical exercise and eat some clean food. We were both adult enough to take ownership of our preferences without forcing them on the other, and were equally happy to dabble in the other’s preferences too. Evason Hua Hin was the perfect choice. It ticked both of our ‘must have’ boxes. Win! And then we arrived… I’ll admit it, when our driver pulled up at the front desk we did look at each other with a ‘this is not what it looked

like on the brochure’ look. Sensing our disappointment, we were quickly told we were just at the drop-off point because no vehicles are allowed on the property. As an eco-friendly destination, no pollution-forming motors are permitted beyond the front gate. Relief. Followed by wide eyes and big grins as we are taken to the main reception in our sustainabilityconscious buggy. The expansive grounds are divine and the music from birds played like a well-rehearsed symphony to greet us. This was way better than the brochure! Even these words can’t capture the vision of 20 acres of lush, green gardens and lotus ponds, or the smell of the flowers, or the orchestrated sound of the ever-present wildlife. Natural beauty personified! Grass cut manually with clippers, staff making deliveries on bicycles, fallen leaves on lawns being raked by hand – every face happy, purposeful and ready with a smile as you pass by. What a welcome! We were then taken to our rooms – neighbouring villas with a shared

POOL VILLA front gate and entry courtyard. The villas are, without overusing the word, perfect. Actually, I will pause for a moment and share some of the little known or boastedabout sustainability practices of Evason. They do it, not because it makes for a good story, but because it matters to them and the environment surrounding them. It also makes for a much nicer guest experience being surrounded by nurturing people and a peaceful setting. There is an organic herb and vegetable garden using permaculture principles and an on-site recycling program. Raised garden beds are built using recycled materials. There are coconut trees and mushroom gardens, and all wet wastes are reused for either mulch for the gardens or livestock feed. “We are experimenting building garden beds using old beer bottles, wine bottles, mud bricks and aluminium cans to grow a range of different organic vegetables (yard long beans, chillies, buttercrunch, lolla rossa, oak leaf and cos lettuces, as well as rocket and a range of herbs). “The results have been great. The idea is to use the area as an educational tool for the local community to demonstrate that the concept of

22 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

waste is essentially a question of perception,” says Alan Thomas, the General Manager of Evason Hua Hin. The food is a notable highlight - literally paddock to plate complete with plenty of raw food options on every menu. Fresh, nutritious and delicious. Even the bread is made on the premises – brushed with cold-pressed olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt and homegrown rosemary. Heaven! Old sheets become laundry bags, drinking water (distilled on the premises) is in glass bottles (not plastic) and toiletries are in handmade glass pump-packs filled with Six Senses natural products. But it is not just the environment Evason cares about! It is a very socially supportive resort too. Contributing money and manpower, they offer as much support as possible to local NGOs, government agencies, local schools and the community to help them reach their goals. As a guest, you feel you’re contributing to this as well. As you holiday, you are actually doing something meaningful for the local community in so many ways. Evason also has an English education program in place to help locals learn the language of the majority of their guests. And the local foster home receives food gifts lovingly prepared by the resort’s chefs. Most of this just happens, with most guests unaware of the ‘giving-back’ programs Evason has in place. Take the time to understand these, as it will truly add to your holiday experience. That greeting smile you receive from the staff is one of pure, heart-felt gratitude… you can feel it! All of that said, you don’t go without. You want for nothing on the comforts of home (and

OUTDOOR SPA PAVILLION

then some) offerings. You know you’re in a luxury resort, but one of homeliness, not hoitytoity-ness (that is a word!!). You have WIFI, beautifully appointed rooms with flat screen TV’s (and Foxtel). A butler, daily cleaning services, air-conditioning, fridge, room service and privacy. As I was saying… The villas are, without overusing the word, perfect. They are spacious, with a sitting area and large four-poster-bed romantically enshrined with white mosquito netting. The room opens out to your own private garden with plunge pool, cabana, daybed and outdoor stone bath. The bathroom is massive and the shower feels like a tropical rainforest. You could spend all your time in your villa if you were on a romantic holiday. I wasn’t, I was with a friend, and we were ready to devour everything Evason has to offer. And that’s a lot. Did I mention how great the food is? Our days would go something like this: Wake up, make a fresh coffee using the in-room Vittoria coffee machine. A quick swim in my private pool and then hit the gym. Breakfast. Always long and lazy, fresh tropical fruit, eggs

done to your liking and different local delicacies to try each day (with raw options too). We’d discuss the day’s itinerary. We’d then wander across to the main pool while breakfast settled to watch the hub of activity both around the pool and out to sea (a night fishing trip with the locals is highly recommended). You are spoilt rotten for ‘what to do today?’ choices - spa, yoga, a bike ride around the village, or a day trip to one of the many eco-tourism destinations. You can also visit the local vineyards – Hua Hin is the Hunter Valley of Thailand. And there is a daily shuttle to take you into Hua Hin town to get your obligatory $10 massage and ‘genuine copy’ bags, shoes and watches. Or do we stay at the resort relaxing by one of the many pools, do the daily resort activity (from cooking courses to soap carving) or visit the Spa (always a yes). After the Spa we’d then, over a quiet afternoon juice and a gently teasing sea-breeze, decide which of the resort restaurants we would go for dinner. Ahhh! The Spa. If you have been to a Six Senses Spa – all I will say is… enough said!

23

For those who haven’t, Six Senses Spas pride themselves on offering healing therapies in a setting that integrates local environment and using products that are as pure as possible. The Six Senses Spa at Evason has a combination of inside and outside treatment areas so you can have an open air massage in one of the bures by the lotus ponds, or a treatment in the privacy of a spacious room. You can also do a full wellness retreat while at Evason, working with both the Spa and the chefs to create a program based on your goals and requirements. Or, as we did, book in for a treatment every day, based on the recommendation of the resident energy healer – who we saw on our first day. Every guest receives a 30-minute complimentary treatment, however I’ll warn you now – take the 30 but it won’t be enough. By day four, every ounce of stress had oozed out of my pores. My body felt strong (gym), yet supple (yoga), and my tastebuds had been on an evocative journey (fresh food, Matthew Kenny cuisine and the awesome chefs). The food, and in particular the Matthew Kenny Culinary Cuisine School, deserve an entire chapter and verse (in another blog). Suffice to say, Matthew Kenny has taken the raw food movement to entire new level. Evason is the only destination in Australasia to offer his culinary courses. Google Matthew Kenny and you’ll see what I mean – he’s the Jamie Oliver of raw food. During our time at Evason, we were asked to judge the dishes of the graduates of the very first school. It was both an honour and a privilege, and an absolute eye-opener for my girlfriend who thought raw food was a salad… not a chocolate desert to die for or cheese made from cashews. On our final night, as we sipped our bubbles and watched the fairy lights from the fishing boats dance on the ocean, we toasted our fantastic holiday. We both got exactly what we wanted and resolved to come back again… but next time with our families as we’re so sure they would all love it too!

24 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

MUST DO • • • • • • •

Book in for one of the Matthew Kenny Culinary Cuisine School courses Spend time with the resident Energy Healer Have a Spa treatment (or several) Go for a bike ride on the newly opened bike path along the oceanfront Eat at every restaurant! Take a bath in your secluded outdoor bathtub Walk around Pranbura, unless you have an aversion to seeing freshly caught squid drying on racks in the sun!

GETTING THERE Fly to Bangkok and either catch a train, take a taxi or arrange a driver to get you to Evason, Hua Hin. If you take the train, you still need to get from Hua Hin station to Evason. The resort will help you with transfers. If travelling by car, a taxi/driver will cost about AU$80-$150 and take about 3 hours if you time your departure and arrival in Bangkok to avoid peak-hour traffic. My tip would be to spend a couple of days in Bangkok and then get a driver/taxi to the resort. Lots to do in Bangkok and if you get all your shopping done, then you can just relax at Evason. M Y FAVO U R I T E T R AV E L TIPS

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller, or you’re about to embark on your first journey, here’s a few of my tips to help make your trip easier and more memorable... PACKING • • • • • • • •

Pop a bar of hotel soap into your dirty laundry bag so it doesn’t stink up your suitcase for the rest of your trip. Wear a night moisturiser on long flights so your skin stays hydrated. Pack items like your laptop in smaller bags so you have options when you’re out and about. Saves always using your carry-on bag on your day trips. Store your power cords in an old sunglass case. It’ll keep you from losing your damn mind. Pack several pairs of underwear in your carry-on in case your luggage gets lost. Actually use those ‘travel-size’ toiletries to save precious luggage space. And again, put them in your carry-on in case your luggage gets lost. Pre-pack what you can. Always have a toiletry bag ready, so your’re not running around madly packing at the last minute - classic recipe for over-packing. Always pack running shoes - so you can run or walk around your destination when you arrive to get the lay of the land.

INTERACTING WITH LOCALS • • • • •

Follow the locals. If there are locals around you, you’re doing it right. If there are only tourists, you’re probably being ripped off and on the ‘tourist strip’. Smile! Learn a bit of the language, even if just hello, yes, no and thank you. If you’re feeling adventurous, eat with the locals. Find out where at Eatwith.com Get the local experiences: Triip: The Happiest Way to Enjoy Truly Local Experiences (available in 86 countries - www.triip.me).

Returning to the office and a mountain of overdue deadlines that would ordinarily send me into a pressurised panic of productivity, I feel a deep-seated serenity as I calmly consider and tackle each task. Hats off then to my husband Paul who, in an uncharacteristically lavish fit of spontaneity, booked seven nights at The Villa (The Edge resort’s onebedroom, 800sqm chunk of paradise) as a surprise present for our three-year anniversary. Back in our youth, we backpacked in Bali, surfing the wild beaches of the south, so whilst this trip was laced with nostalgia for those more carefree days, it was a totally different kind of escape we were now seeking! The Edge delivered on romance and indulgence through the fantasy surroundings - immaculate to the point of perfection - and the subtle, yet attentive, service of every single member of staff, but notably Padma. The ‘edge’ of The Edge has got to be the 24-hour personal butler service that is included. Whilst this may initially seem like an over-indulgent or intrusive idea, I can assure you it

really sets the resort apart from other luxury spas. Discreet and respectful of our privacy, Padma made our stay drift past like an effortless dream. Everything is arranged for you, right down to the rigmarole of packing after a long day in the spa - life is hard! We arrived in the late afternoon and on being shown to the heaven we would call home for the following week, became quite childlike in our excitement. It seems those kids who bummed their way around Bali’s beaches all those years back are still capable of rearing their over-excited heads! We had hardly got over the ornate king-sized bed with its crisp linen, the freestanding stone bath with panoramic views of the ocean and the glorious plunge pool when Paul and I made respective discoveries of the sound and lighting system. Paul exclaimed in satisfaction, blasting out some obscure folk album (not entirely attuned to our glamorous getaway!) on the sharp surround sound, while I amused myself fiddling with the extraordinary range of mood lighting settings (I’m such a sucker

LOCAL VILLAGES JIMBARAN BAY: 20 mins from The Edge and not as brash as nearby Kuta and Legian, this beach has clean white sands and is where the locals get their seafood. NEW KUTA GOLF: A swing from the resort, this is a world class 18-hole course if you feel the need to stretch your legs or do something a little more energetic than having a massage. UBUD: A little further afield, but worth a few hours in an air-conditioned car, is Bali’s centre of traditional crafts and performance. Set among forest and rice fields strewn with temples, this is a must for the cultural visitor.

MAIN POOL VIEW for sexy lighting - what can I say!) when our collective attention was stolen by lighting of a more natural kind. Watching the sun drop into the sea from our secluded and enormous outdoor terrace, the sky turned on the most amazing show of vivid and unworldly pinks, purples and yellows. This would become a daily highlight for our whole trip. The Edge is called thus because it sits perched on the crown of an 80-metre cliff that drops straight down into the teal-coloured waters of the Indian Ocean. This makes it one of the best spots for watching the sunset that I‘ve ever visited. Sunrise is no doubt just as impressive, although we never get up early enough to confirm that! For all the attentive service and amenities, the villa’s location gives it a feeling of real remoteness. It is easy to sink into the thought that time - and the rest of the world - do not exist here, making it an ideal resort for honeymooners and other romantic, private getaways.

Not diehard spa junkies, having access to the range of treatments on offer was a rare delight for us and boy oh boy did I go to town! The spa itself affords the same mind-blowing views we enjoyed from our villa. Remedies and treatments draw a lot from local ingredients and the island’s spirituality. For example, I highly recommend the Sacred Flower Ritual, which nods to the Balinese deities and uses the essence of their precious flowers in a body wash, scrub, steam wrap and dreamy massage. Another highlight was the truly invigorating Coffee and Pandan Body Wrap that I opted for because it helps with cellulite, but it did so much more, leaving my skin and tissues feeling ten years younger. Four days in, we had almost forgotten we were there to celebrate our anniversary, it being difficult to muster consideration for anything real when you are so relaxed! The day before, Padma had asked us about our all-time favourite food, and this

evening a candlelit table was set up on our terrace and we dined on a sumptuous five-course menu. Dishes were based on the regional meals we had enjoyed in our backpacking days, but snazzed up with signature Edge finesse. The gingery fresh lobster cooked to perfection over charcoal was one of the highlights of our stay. Definitely a ‘must have’! As a whole, the world-class food at The Edge genuinely caters to any palette. Their Pan-Asian dishes are exquisite and the local delicacies expertly prepared. Having guiltily opted for straight-up New Zealand lamp chops one evening, I can also attest to the quality of the food for those who prefer to stick to Western flavours. Oh and I already mentioned the Mint and Apple Margaritas right? The cocktail menu is to die for! Will we be back? Most certainly! I could get used to the upper strata of

luxury with pleasure!

ESCAPE: JAPAN

03 TO K YO Andaz Tokyo comfortably sits in my top five hotels of the world. After a sumptuous stay, impeccable service and breathtaking spa, I can easily say I found absolutely no fault. The entire experience was first class. The only negative was having to check out of this exceptional hotel. WORDS & PHOTOS: KELSIE BARLEY

TORONOMON HILLS BUILDING 32 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

The location is fantastic, nestled in the prestigious Toronomon area. Andaz occupies the top floors of the new Toronomon Hills building. With easy access to the renowned Ginza shopping district just a few short stops away on the train, Andaz provides a fantastic base for exploring Tokyo. What’s even better, the hotel is itself a place you want to explore. With various dining options, five-star spa, health club facilities, plus spacious, luxurious suites, this is a hotel you quickly feel comfortable in and never want to leave. Andaz room rates are certainly at the top end of the market. Their entry level room, the Andaz King, starts from around $660 per night, while a Bay View Suite will set you back close to $3,000 per night. With this kind of price tag, you expect a lot, but Andaz Tokyo delivers above and beyond expectations. Andaz means unique or personal style and this hotel has that in spades. Japanese design merges wonderfully with modern architecture, providing an awe-inspiring, yet welcoming, atmosphere when entering the property. Andaz wants its guests to feel as though they are visiting a friend’s home. There is a level of comfort and familiarity within a high-end luxury setting. Upon arrival, rather than the standard check-in desk, you are guided to a lounge area and served hot or cold drinks. The Andaz hosts then take care of checkin, chatting with you about your journey and registering your details with an iPad. Meanwhile your bags are whisked away to your room. This time provides a fantastic opportunity to discuss the hotel, its facilities, plus any local recommendations for dining or shopping. The Andaz hosts are extremely friendly and provide authentic hospitality.

SPA RECEPTION

IT IS THEIR INTENTION TO P ROV I D E YO U W I T H AN EXPERIENCE WHERE YO U F E E L YO U A R E S T AY I N G W I T H F R I E N D S O R F A M I LY The concept behind this unique check-in is simple — when arriving at a friend’s home, you would be welcomed, offered a seat and provided with refreshments after your journey. At Andaz, throughout the world, it is their intention to provide you with an experience where you feel you are staying with friends or family. The attention to detail and the feeling of warmth and luxury is like nothing else. Yet there is a Japanese influence to remind you that you are in Tokyo. Arriving at the AO Spa level, we are immediately greeted and invited to take a seat so our therapists can discuss the concept of the spa and our treatment. True to the Andaz ethos, the spa treatment is personalised with your consultation and scent selection

at the beginning. Completing a brief form, the spa staff get to know your personality and spa style. You are able to select everything, from areas of focus to the scents used and even the music. The scent selection at the apothecary style bar is something very memorable. I select lavender, mint and

yuzu, a relaxing and heady blend. You feel extremely connected to the spa treatment already as you watch your therapist pick herbs from the live herb garden and crush these in a mortar and pestle with a variety of fruits and flowers which have been dehydrated on-site. This unique and market-leading concept really adds to your entire experience. It helps to slow you down and ensures your spa experience is not simply the 90 minutes you spend in the room, but a relaxing journey from the moment you arrive. You are then guided into the treatment room. The view from our room is nothing short of breathtaking, with the curved windows providing an almost panoramic view of Tokyo. This would have to be the most luxurious spa treatment room I have ever seen. Every detail is perfect. The treatment begins with a foot bath and scrub, followed by a 90-minute full body massage. After a week of skiing, my body is aching and sore. My therapist is highly trained and lulls me into absolute serenity. Beginning the treatment at

CHECK IN LOUNGE

AO SPA SCENT BAR 3.30pm, when I arise from the massage, darkness has descended upon Tokyo. Out the windows, 37 floors up, the glittering lights of Tokyo just add to the entire experience. We take a seat near the window and are served fresh fruit, sweets and tea. I had earlier advised the hotel that it was my partner’s birthday the day before, and while we are enjoying some tea we are surprised when a decadent chocolate mud cake arrives with the staff singing Happy Birthday. This again circles back to the Andaz ethos and their desire to provide guests with a truly memorable stay. In Japan, there is a lot of respect paid to the seasons. Culturally the seasons play a huge roll in people’s lives. Throughout Japanese art and media, there are elegant representations of nature and the four seasons. This might be due to the distinctly contrasting seasons. Winter, with its icy cold temperatures and famous powder snow, leads into Spring, with the world famous cherry blossoms, known in Japan as Sakura. This concept of seasonality is strongly encouraged at the AO Spa. All the produce is fresh and in season, changing week to week depending on

what is available at the local markets. Most spas use specific brands for all their treatment products, so the ability to tailor these to your individual needs is very limited. The point of difference at Andaz is the creation of your own scents. Depending on how you’re feeling at the time of your treatment, your therapist will guide you through which herbs, spices, florals and oils would be best suited to you. Rachel, the Spa Manager, explained this concept of building and creating your spa treatment just prior to your appointment. This ensures you get the best result from your treatment and your needs at the time of your treatment are met. These needs may be very different to those at the time you made your booking. It’s all about the NOW! I’ve stayed in a number of five-star hotels and never have I ordered room service and received the quality of food we experience at the Andaz Tokyo. The Bebu burger in particular was incredible and highly recommended. (It was so good I ordered it again during my stay). Andaz offers five dining options. European provincial cuisine, all prepared with seasonal Japanese ingredients. This is also where the buffet breakfast is served each morning. Again, Andaz hits this one out of the park, offering endless options, all so well prepared with high quality produce. There is a sushi restaurant that offers a unique dining experience. Seating only eight people, this dimly lit room, inspired by the traditional Japanese tea room, serves only the freshest seasonal produce, all beautifully prepared ‘omakase-style’ by their highly skilled sushi chefs. They also have Bebu on the ground floor, a casual eatery serving burgers, tapas and grill options. I cannot say enough how fantastic their signature Bebu burger is! Also situated on the ground floor is The Pastry Shop. This place is a real treat. Stunning

interior design showcases a large selection of patisseries, chocolates and savouries. A fantastic place to pick up a few gifts to take home with you. STEPHANIE’S SPA RETREAT AT SOFITEL BRISBANE

STEAM, MUD & A P R I V AT E H A M M A M WORDS: KRIS ABBEY

S T E P H A N I E ’ S S PA R E T R E AT AT T H E SOFITEL IN BRISBANE STEPHANIES.COM.AU

The RASUL is a traditional Arabian cleansing ritual which leaves spa lovers feeling pure and calm and their skin beautifully exfoliated. The experience takes place in a private temple under the light of a thousand stars. This sultry journey of mud therapy, warm steam and tropical rain showers is both invigorating to the senses and calming to the mind. This ancient cleansing ritual involves firstly exfoliating your body with a salt scrub and then covering your body, face and hair with nourishing muds, while a gentle stream of steam drifts into your twinkling Rasul chamber. As

the warm mist softens the skin and eases tension, the muds work their magic, before a tropical monsoonlike drenching of warm water allows you to rinse away the clays, leaving your skin nourished, hydrated and super-soft. Usually this is a self-administering treatment and extremely private (unless you choose to do it with a friend or partner). It can be enjoyed as a stand-alone treatment or as part of a more comprehensive Spa journey. My tip is to follow up with a full body massage while your muscles are relaxed and your skin is ready to soak up all the goodness of the massage oils.

EXPERIENCE: AUSTRALIA

04 FIRST TIME FA C E D OW N

WORDS: SARAH AITKEN

Should a first-time Spa experience have you feeling nervous and unsure or elated with expectation? Sarah Aitken shares her first ever experience face down at the CHI Spa, Shangri-La. 40 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

41

CONFESSION: this is my first Spa treatment. Ever! My first time in a proper Spa and I have to admit, the entire concept makes me a bit nervous. I’ve always believed that Spa treatments are a little excessive and unnecessary. Let me tell you now; my opinion has drastically changed! CHI, The Spa, sits on level two of Sydney’s Shangri-La Hotel. The location gets a huge tick. What’s not tickable about a tranquil Spa conveniently located in the heart of Sydney? Especially when you feel as though you’re anywhere but in the hustle and bustle of the city. With a strong focus on using environmentally friendly and naturally processed products, The Spa offers a range of different treatments and therapies. I opted for the Crystalus Body Massage, where Western Australian healing stones and crystals are used to create a sensory experience focussing

on the mind, body and spirit. A tall order for a small stone! I’m ushered into a comfortably quiet, soothingly lit waiting area. Around each bend there are private, curtain-enshrined nooks, with reclining daybeds to relax on. I am still a touch nervous, but starting to calm down. Christina, my therapist, introduces herself and asks me to fill out the client card as I sip refreshing iced rose tea. Second confession; I am extremely ticklish and my body just loves to squirm. With this front of mind, I select the boxes that I think could hide this fact the most. I decide to ask Christina to focus on my legs, hands and neck. Definitely not my feet! Now I’m led down the hall into a lush private treatment room and left alone to change and mentally prepare myself. It’s ‘go’ time. With no expectations, I lie on the bed and surrender myself to Christina. She

42 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

asks me to take three deep breaths through my nose, and as much as it sounds like a cliché, from the moment I inhale the oils she has prepared, my body relaxes and I can’t wait for what is to come. My memory and thoughts blur. I feel as though I’m sleeping, although I’m totally aware and awake. I would be lying if I tried to recount every detail about the massage, as my body went into a total relaxed state. What I do remember is the way the healing crystals felt. It’s almost as though they were melting into my back and spreading some sort of energy throughout my body. The aromatic oils massaged over my body not only left my skin feeling replenished and rejuvenated, but they connected my physical state to my spiritual one. I found myself reflecting on all sorts of random things in my life. I then had to fight my brain to switch

shangri-la.com/sydney/shangrila/health-leisure/chi-the-spa

off and shake away these thoughts so I could get back to being present in the treatment. From the tips of my fingers and toes to my back, chest and face, every part of my body felt alive and all connected in perfect harmony. What I wasn’t prepared for was how good I would feel after the treatment. And I don’t just mean for one hour after. For the next few days, it was as though my body and mind were inspiring me to be a healthier, better version of me. I wanted to eat better, be more productive and focussed, exercise more and take time out to reflect.

Having always considered a Spa treatment to be a luxury, now I feel it’s simply something that benefits our health and entire wellbeing. I no longer see a Spa as a place to indulge, but more a place to reconnect, unwind and refocus on the better things life offers. Did I enjoy my first ever Spa experience? Absolutely! Although I’m worried that the benchmark has been set too high thanks to Christina at the Shangri-La! Will it be my last? Absolutely not!

ESCAPE: PHUKET

05 THE LUCKY WINNER...

WORDS: STEVE MILLS

THE VIEW OF THE ANDAMAN SEA Andara resort & villas are true luxury in paradise. Nestled amidst lush tropical surrounds overlooking the Andaman Sea on the central west coast of Phuket, perfect for a relaxing holiday. 44 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

To say “I never win anything” would be sour grapes. In truth I’m not one for entering competitions and the like. When my husband and I, buoyed up by the others at our table, casually entered a raffle at a charity event in our local town, we never imagined it would result in the trip of a lifetime! Travelling to Phuket in Thailand and being put up like royals at the beyond-luxurious Andara Hotel was a dream come true for my entire family. The prize was courtesy of the Andara Hotel and Spa & Wellness Magazine and my kids would like to say a horribly loud and over-thetop thank you to both parties. Now let me at those lottery scratch cards! We are not the international jet-setting type. We do indulge in a short trip every few years to get away from it all, but with four kids and busy working lives, my husband and I could barely remember when we last got on a plane. This caused a bit of logistical chaos as we had to go full-steam in order to get the children’s passports in time. However the organisation and frantic swimwear shopping was all justly rewarded the minute we set foot in Andara.

Arriving in Phuket was an assault on the senses and all rather overwhelming, especially for my kids, who had never left Australia before. Being met by a driver with our name emblazoned on a card was like greeting an old friend and it really took the stress out of the situation. From then on, we knew we were in good hands. Driving along the coast to the resort, our minds were all blown! We were in paradise. My youngest turned and exclaimed “Mama have we arrived in heaven?” on seeing the white sand beaches and clear waters of the Andaman Sea. My normal cynicism was silenced - perhaps we were! The resort is certainly luxurious, but there is nothing snobby or exclusive about the place to make you feel uncomfortable (even with three rowdy little people in tow). The decor is modern and chic with classy local art and a contemporary Thai feel, but everything is relaxed and understated. We have our own suite complete with a very swanky kitchen, which came in handy when we ventured to the local market and bought some fish. Suffice to say our efforts to create delicious

Thai food were nowhere near as good as the delectable dishes at the resort’s Silk Restaurant, so we only attempted that once! Our suite also came with a stunning private pool, but my personal favourite touch was the secluded outdoor bath. Bathing in the balmy heat with a good book while my husband minded the children was truly one of the most blissfully relaxing experiences I have had in years. While on the topic of relaxation, our prize included a Spa treatment for my husband and I. We went for traditional full-body Thai massages and the therapists came to our villa, with the rest of the family safely packed off to the Kid’s Club. The massages were intense and expertly delivered, really teasing out all the tension in our bodies. The therapist was very knowledgeable and told me about the stress collected in my thighs and ways I can work on diffusing this in everyday life. The understated vibe I talked about earlier is also reflected in the impressive, but again understated, service. Everyone working at the Andara seems genuinely set on

45

making your time there as perfect as possible with attentive, but unintrusive, care taken to all your needs. From the moment we arrived until the moment we regretfully departed for the airport, the welcome was personal and friendly, making us feel very special indeed - it was phenomenal! Waiting staff at The Silk Restaurant were incredibly patient, talking my kids through the exotic foods on offer in a way that got them excited about trying new things. Ahhh, now that brings me on to the food! Though we did eat out at several local eateries, recommended by the local staff, I have to say that the food at Andara was unparalleled. My kids can be a little fussy with food, but we all had so much fun ordering adventurous new things. The waiting staff were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic, telling us about the fresh ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Now the kids have a taste for coconut, spices and seafood and we have got way more experimental in our home kitchen as a result. They really think about every detail at the Andara. One day I was rallying the gang out of the

sumptuous pool and felt concerned about how pink the kids were from the sun. A waiter had seemingly read my thoughts and moved a table, perfectly set for five, into the shade for us. Now that’s service! One thing we were a tad apprehensive about before leaving home was exposing the kids to the wild party scene for which Phuket has a reputation. They’re a bit young for tequila shots and skinny dipping! Thankfully the area we were in was very peaceful and the nearest beach, Kamala, was perfect for families and the village felt safe, with its colourful food stands and friendly locals. We spent a lot of time on Kamala, frolicking in the water and sunbathing, and the hotel staff astonished us again by helping us carry all our stuff to the beach and providing sun mats, umbrellas, towels and cushions and even ice cold bottled water. All in all, this was an experience that I’m sure my family will treasure among our best memories for years to come. Thanks again to the Andara and Spa and Wellness Magazine!

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS KAMALA TALAD NAT ON: The village market is open Mon, Wed & Sat from 2pm to 8pm. A great way to get a flavour for local life, traders sell a cornucopia of fresh produce and the sights and smells are one of Thailand’s true delights. RED MOUNTAIN GOLF CLUB: Just half an hour from Andara this is one of Asia’s most exciting new courses. With 16 holes and cleverly landscaped to fit with the natural landscape, this course is a real treat for amateurs and experts alike.

ESCAPE: BALI

06 T R E N DY & Q U I R K Y L HOTEL WORDS: KRIS ABBEY

Situated in the northern part of Seminyak, this luxury hotel is attracting travellers who want impeccable interiors and extraordinary design.... as well as divine food and drinks!

L HOTEL LUXE SUITE 48 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

Why ‘L’? I learn L means “Live Life”. Leave everything behind and live it up at the L Hotel. I Like! Located in trendy Seminyak and lovingly designed by an internationally-acclaimed team, the 30-suite L Hotel marries heritage with modernity like a match made in heaven. As soon as we arrived, we were whisked to the Luna Rooftop Bar to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset. Just as breathtaking as the view is the exquisite design and decor of Luna. A slick combination of timelessness and opulance. The nowcommon black and silver is replaced with well-balanced vibrant colour. The food menu matches the decor – colourful with the inclusion of timeless classics (with a twist). To be honest, the food at this hotel is reason enough to book a stay. Awardwinning chef Ryan Clift, from the famed Tippling Club and Open Farm Community in Singapore, puts his impressive mark on the produce-centric, fresh and sustainable dining scene in Bali. I’ll come back to the food. Special mention must go to the cocktails served at Luna Bar. The sublime Luna Bar menu couples refined progressive cuisine with avant-garde cocktails, really putting L Hotel on the map. Last year, Luna Bar was ranked 12th in the inaugural Asia’s 50 Best Bars. It was named in the Top 20 of The Miele Guide. Due to Luna Bar’s popularity, they have recently launched Grow Up – a rooftop space with an open-air terrace and a sheltered seating area around the interactive bar. You can either sit and sip your cocktail, or get in and help create your own. And take in the view.

The Hotel’s main restaurant, GROW, features artisanal and bespoke elements throughout the eclectic menu serving Ryan’s self-titled ‘Bistronomy’ cuisine. “My philosophy is simple – ingredients first, then comes taste, texture, temperature, smell and sound”, says Ryan. The menu at GROW evolves with Bali’s changing seasons and is largely driven by the availability of fresh produce. Using vegetables grown in the highlands of Kintamani and seafood sourced from the island’s coastal waters, GROW is all about maintaining the lowest possible carbon footprint. Yet high in taste, nutritional value and salivating gorgeousness!

But it’s not all about the food. All guests are given their own personal butler to assist throughout your stay! YES! I seriously wanted to take Gede home with me. He helped unpack, then repack, and ensured anything we needed was taken care of. Plus booked cars, restaurants, gave local tips and recommendations on what would be of interest. Nothing was too difficult and everything was delivered with a smile. At the end of a busy day sightseeing, Gede would welcome us with a soothing cool drink and a cleansing wet towel. On the last day, it was time to visit the Spa. I left it to Gede to choose my treatment – as the menu is vast – and true to his intuition he picked perfectly for me. The Spa is located next to the hotel in a very private, tranquil setting. There are only four treatment rooms, a relaxation area and a small outdoor pool area, but what it lacks in quantity it certainly makes up for in quality. My treatment was exquisite and muscles were soothed. I was even gifted the

remainder of the bespoke oil from my massage. As we’ve come to expect at the L Hotel, it’s the little things that add meaning. For me, L is for loving. The entire team at the hotel treated us like family and extended warmth and continued gratitude for our stay throughout our stay. Live. Life. Love.

L Hotel is located in the heart of Seminyak, easily one of the most sought after and chic neighbourhoods in Bali. Away from the crowds of Kuta, Seminyak has been winning rave reviews for its stunning beaches, top-notch dining and shopping experiences and, above all, its laid-back and trendy vibe. 10 km north from Ngurah Rai International Airport, the hotel is nestled in a quiet corner of Seminyak and reflects the romance, serenity and timeless beauty of the island. 49

I am also asked to advise what I would like to achieve in terms of my health and wellbeing during my stay. After I press the ‘submit’ button, I picture The Farm’s health and medical team getting to work devising my program, while I excitedly count down the sleeps until I board the plane to the Philippines and experience one of the most amazing health retreats on the planet. The Farm is located an easy two-hour drive south of the capital of Manila and is a stark contrast to that chaotic, bustling, over-populated city. The minute you drive up the palmlined driveway, past the welcome sign and through the big iron gates, the outside world becomes exactly that - outside! I arrive late at night, so I can’t visually absorb much from my surrounds, but I can feel it. It is warm and nurturing and totally calm. Apart from the odd call of the wild, it is peaceful and quiet. I am greeted by the Farm’s managers, Tania and Uwe Hofer, with a quiet enthusiasm, then taken to the villa which will be my home for the next three days.

50 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

The next morning, I awake after one of the best sleeps I can remember. I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven. In the broad light of day, the beauty of this place comes flooding in. My villa is sizeable, with a private courtyard and a garden big enough for a game of backyard cricket! The bathroom is equally massive and has a shower built for two. It is cleverly designed to be inside and yet with an open roof, so you feel as though you’re showering in the great outdoors, which I find extremely liberating! This award-winning retreat is nestled in the foothills of Mount Malarayat and spans 48 hectares of lovingly landscaped Balinese-style gardens. What was once a coconut and coffee plantation is now a majestic combination of lush gardens, duck ponds, waterfalls and rock pools, not to mention the most amazing mango tree that forms the the perfect marquee for outdoor dining or just taking in the view, Just sitting in the gardens calms and centres you.

Coconut trees are abundant and harvested regularly. They are handpressed for their oil, which is used in both the cooking and the Spa treatments. The coconut juice is the basis for many of the fresh juices and drinks, while the coconut meat is used in all sorts of creative ways, such as making savoury crackers for dipping in hummus! An extensive organic garden provides most of the fresh ingredients for the restaurant. Produce is picked daily to preserve maximum nutrition. I’m beginning to understand why this place is called ‘the Farm’! I don my runners and feel like I can take on the world (that one that feels so far removed). I wander over to the restaurant, aptly called Alive, for breakfast. The brochure states: “Our vegan restaurant Alive will provide you with a surprising twist to your concept of healthy eating when you discover our ‘living’ cuisine.” And let me say now, it’s worth coming to The Farm simply for the food! I

kick-start my day with The Farm’s signature Green Super Juice, followed by the most delicious home-made granola served with fruit and freshlypressed nut milk. It may not sound special, but it makes my tastebuds sing and dance… or even come Alive! It’s probably not protocol to ask for a second helping, but I do anyway. I head over to the clinic to meet Dr Bardonado. We do a live blood analysis and thankfully I’m informed that my blood is very healthy, with only the odd mutated cell due to radiation (I suspect from my flight, or perhaps copious hours in front of my computer). It’s quite interesting to have this analysis done as you can see how fluid and hydrated your blood is, as well as determine the presence of foreign bodies. Since my blood gets a clean bill of health, we move right on to discussing my program for the next three days. Everyone who comes to The Farm is given a tailor-made program based

on their current health and desired outcomes. Prevention, Recovery and Wellness are the broad treatment packages, although you can take a bit from this and a bit from that to help you get the most from your stay. This is where I should let you know that you come to The Farm for a health and wellness outcome. That outcome will definitely be a positive one, but it will not come without a few sacrifices or without stepping a little bit out of your comfort zone.

And why coffee? “Coffee is used because of its astringent properties, when not broken down by digestive enzymes, which is the case when it passes through the stomach. This induces contractions of the colon to help remove hardened wastes that stick to the walls of the colon.” Great! What time is that again? I have to be honest here, this is not something I would have willingly signed up for, but I don’t have time to come up with an excuse so I go through with it. I discover that Filipinos are very open when discussing bowel movements and colon therapy. My therapist is so matter-of-fact and clinical, I soon feel my nervousness subsiding. The fact that I’ve had three children helps immensely, although I’m still told on a number of occasions: “Just relax, Miss Kris” and “There’s no problem, Miss Kris”. I don’t intend explaining the procedure in detail here, but if you’re contemplating having this treatment, I suggest you research it to ensure it’s done in a clinical setting by a trained professional, as it is at The Farm. What I will say is, the 30 minutes of awkwardness experienced during the procedure is totally worth the results. Within minutes, I feel fantastic. Afterwards I have some ginger tea and probiotics to regenerate bowel flora and a heat pack for my abdomen. I feel so much lighter and cleaner and everything I eat and drink afterwards makes me feel much more energised.

DAY 2

Nothing beats a relaxing soak in the bath when it’s in the great outdoors! DR BARDONADO AND I GO THROUGH MY PROGRAM DAY 1 Lunch Vegetable salad and soup 1.30pm Electrolyte drink 3pm Cleansing drink 5pm Colema 6pm Transition salad 7.30pm Cleansing drink followed by relaxation massage 9pm Supplements OK. Straight away I’m grateful I had a second helping at breakfast because for the rest of the day it seems I’m not going to eat much other than juices, soups and salads (which are still incredible, by the way). I then see something on my schedule I’m not familiar with – a colema. Dr Bardonado explains: “A colema consists of ducting coffee by gravity through a rubber conduit inserted into the rectal portion of the colon.” The look on my face prompts him to further explain: “The diameter of the tube inserted is smaller than the head of a pencil.”

7am Green Super Juice 8.30am Cleansing drink 9am Body Salt Bath 10.30am Green Super Juice 12pm Green Super Juice and Purification Treatment 2pm Wheatgrass shot and electrolyte drink 2.30pm Sprouting class (learn how to grow wheatgrass and sprouts) 3pm Cooking Class (very cruel as we’re meant to be fasting!) 6pm Green Super Juice 8pm Cleansing drink and Infusion Therapy 9pm Supplements This fasting day is not as tough as I imagined. The juices are at regular intervals, so you never really suffer hunger pangs. It doesn’t matter where you are on The Farm, the apron-clad waiters will find you and deliver your freshly squeezed juice directly to you. In fact, this is a big part of the scenery and charm of The Farm - beautiful, gentle people walking around, very eager to please and always wearing a smile. And they’re everywhere - up trees, sweeping paths, weeding gardens - and you’re always greeted with a big, wide smile and a friendly hello. I must mention two things: the Yoga and the Spa! Yoga is available most mornings at the yoga pavilion. The outlook from the pavilion is stunning and puts you in the right frame of mind

from the minute you perch yourself on your yoga mat. You look out across the pond, water fountain and coconut trees to a distant mountain. One morning there was a light sprinkling of rain, making the experience all the more serene and spiritual. The Spa shares this same outlook, replacing the pond with an inviting, infinity-edged swimming pool. As you walk through the vast front doors of the Spa, you look out over the pool to a wonderful green space beyond. All the treatment rooms are designed to make you feel you have the place to yourself - each have their own little outdoor area so you can shower outdoors if you wish, or just sit privately and bask in the glow of your treatment. It is a very open Spa, making the most of the beautiful landscape and giving you a sense of freedom and space. All the treatments I have are world class, which is not surprising given

The Farm has won Spa Retreat of the Year several times over! If I had to recommend one treatment, I couldn’t you’ve got to have at least two! You’ve got to have the traditional Filipino Hilot Hampol massage AND the Purification Treatment. Oh, and the Body Salt Bath is pretty special too. You soak in a stone tub filled with salted water to help your body detox. You’re covered with a banana leaf so you don’t feel exposed when the doctor comes in regularly to check your blood pressure. What makes this treatment so special is your beautiful surrounds you feel like you’re all alone at the top of a mountain as you soak away your stresses. I challenge anyone to find anything more relaxing! Whatever treatment you choose, each begins with a little prayer or mantra, which I loved. Nothing more is said. What more needs to be said?

DAY 3 7am 10.30am 12.30pm 2.30pm

Breakfast (yay! I can eat) Hilot Hampol Gourmet lunch (delicious) Colon massage and colonic

After just two days, I feel totally alive! I can’t wait to eat again - not that I’m starving, it’s just that the food is so good. The nutritional philosophy is based on the Hippocratic belief: “Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food.” Having undergone such a thorough cleansing over the past two days, I only want to put food in my mouth that will nurture my body. This is where The Farm comes to the fore. I can honestly say that even a humble banana has never tasted so good. I’m a bit of a chocolate connoisseur and the vegan chocolate ganache tart is to die for, although you won’t because it uses fresh, hand-ground, cocoa beans with no dairy or eggs and the nut base makes it rich in both antioxidants and fibre. How good is that?! My final treatment is a colonic. I have no fear now because I know how good I’m going to feel at the end. OK, so I feel a little bit of anxiety, but this procedure is nowhere near as uncomfortable as the colema, yet interestingly the locals prefer a colema over a colonic (yes, this did come up in conversation). Ginger tea, probiotics and a hot pack again conclude the therapy.

It is now time for me to head back into the real world, but I’m in a much better place emotionally, physically and psychologically to deal with it. It never ceases to amaze me what a few days of feeding, nurturing and cleansing your body can do! As I head out the gates, I feel blessed to have had such an amazing experience and for the opportunity to reconnect with my dearest friend – me! www.thefarm.com.ph

MIND

01 SWITCHING OFF

We all know we’re living in times of olympic WORDS: LARA ZILIBOWITZ

levels of distraction, with an epidemic of stress. This onslaught of ‘busy-ness’ is sweeping the globe, causing serious disease of the body and mind.

62 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

Never have the words slow down been so desperately needed as they are now. Otherwise the result is burnout, followed by the metaphorical vehicle flipping over a few times, before a head-on collision. I am a case in point. The Reader’s Digest version of my story is that at age 18 I had a lifethreatening encounter with a glass table, leaving my nervous system in a state of severe shock. However, the medicine I have received from my yoga mat over the past decade has been the keystone in my battle with the posttraumatic stress symptoms of anxiety and insomnia. Due to these recurring stress symptoms, I was forced to leave my full-time career in publishing and walk a road less travelled in search of health and happiness. The questions I now have are: What does it mean to live fully awake and passionately on purpose? What am I more curious about than afraid of? I believe it starts with realising the promise and potential of every single day. To awaken a commitment to live in a way that we’ll be proud of when inevitably it’s time for the ultimate shavasana (dead man’s pose). As American author Dawna Markova eloquently states: “We’ve been so trained to do, in order to have, so that maybe in some distant future we can be.” We know this is all backward. What about living in the here and now? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a very strange and misunderstood phenomena, However it has taught me, and is still teaching me, that the intelligence of the body simply cannot be ignored.

“WE’VE BEEN SO TRAINED TO DO, IN ORDER TO H A V E , S O T H A T M AY B E I N S O M E D I S T A N T F U T U R E WE CAN BE.” I have always been an incredibly tactile person with a passion for creative expression through movement, so yoga was a natural development for me. It made me feel alive and connected to my essence, my passion, my purpose, and I just couldn’t get enough. But also, it began

to offer insights into what was going on in my body-mind and provided tools for coping. When my full-time work fell away, yoga was there to catch me. From that point on, I pledged my way forward to peace and health for body and mind for myself, and all

who I am lucky enough to work with. If I had to sum up what yoga is in one word, I believe yoga is listening. Listening to the body with curious, compassionate, loving attention, revelling in the experience of being human, in all its pleasure and pain. It requires exiting the fast lane and moving into the slow river of wonder. I would like to suggest that rather than finding joy, we cultivate it by searching for the preciousness of small things, the ordinary miracles such as the delight in taking a shower, in touching something soft, enjoying a delicious mouthful of food, the texture of breath entering and leaving your body... In yoga, we’re constantly harping on about the breath. What’s all the fuss about? In this context, it is a powerful anchor to keep us present, where past and future merge into the same moment, instead of feeling pulled apart or trapped between the polarities. The effect of mindfulness practices, of which yoga is one, is that everyday actions - such as lifting your arm above your head become sublime. When we apply fascinated attention towards whatever it is we’re

64 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

doing, there is the potential to drop out of a pure thinking mind and connect with the feeling, intuitive body. In that mode, there is nowhere else to be but fully submerged in the present moment. I believe the biggest gift we can give ourselves is to pay attention, to serenade ourselves with conscious breath and every meaningful mark or movement. For me, being creative and working with my hands has a similar effect. What I have come to realise is that living with ‘struggle’ has brought me into daily conversation with myself. This path has inadvertently demanded my own authentic expression, innovation and replenishing solitude. I constantly have to be reminded of my commitment to slow down, to put one foot in front of the other, taking a sacred pause to stop and appreciate the smell of the roses, the warmth of the sun, the flavour of the morning dew, the vast beauty all around me. Only then can I hear the true sound of my own heart song. http://www.larazyoga.com/

02 DO I NEED A DETOX? The word detox has taken such a battering from the media over the years, it seems to have as many negative connotations as positive, despite the wonderful vitality and rejuvenation it can bring to your health. A good detox program can literally be the start of a new lease on life and the essential first step down the path of long-term wellbeing. WORDS: KRIS ABBEY

W H E N YO U R B LO O D HAS TOO MANY TOXINS, IT COMPROMISES E V E RY C E L L I N YO U R B O D Y. Y O U R H E A LT H P AY S A P R I C E … A N D U LT I M A T E LY Y O U R H I P POCKET DOES TOO.

Put simply, to detox means to give your blood a good clean, like a grease and oil change for your car. It has a profound and positive effect on your liver, kidneys and other organs of your body. Our blood accumulates toxins - more than it can filter out - from both external and endogenous (internal) sources. External toxins come into your body through poor diet, drinking too much alcohol, coffee and tea, stress, poor sleep, exposure to environmental toxins such as pollution and taking drugs, among other things. Endogenous sources are usually a result of hormonal or chemical imbalances and by-products of the bacteria in our digestive system. Often excess endogenous toxins are the result of exposure to too many external toxins. When your blood has too many toxins, it compromises every cell in your body. Your health pays a price… and ultimately your hippocket does too. I remember the first proper detox program I did, and the intense

68 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

feeling of being 100% healthy at the end of it. I had spent a week at The Farm at San Benito, Batangas in the Philippines (thefarm.com.ph). You can read about my time there on page 50. At the end of the program, I had crystal-clear eyes, my skin was glowing and my energy levels were at an all-time high. My usual Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms were no more, and I had never felt so vibrant and healthy in my entire life. I remember thinking everyone should experience this feeling. Nirvana! And yes, I confess that a medically supervised detox program in a beautiful Spa environment, with food and juices prepared for you, is a great way to detox. However, I also believe that with enough motivation, commitment and advance preparation, you can complete a very effective detox program in the comfort of your own home. Before you embark, think about why you’re doing the program. Is it to re-energise? Lose weight?

A GOOD GREEN SMOOTHIE I find kale to be quite bitter and not the most appetising ingredient. However, add a piece of fruit and some lemon juice and it beomes a taste sensation - and has health super powers! 69

KAMALAYA’S DETOX SALAD AT

Undo some of the damage done over the holidays? Or kick-start a healthier lifestyle? Whatever your reason is, write it down. Then when temptation rears its ugly head, come back to the why you’re doing this. I’m sure the reason why is much more meaningful to you than the temptation put before you. Also think about your end goal. Write that down too. How will it feel to achieve that goal? And what is your reward? Come on, we all need a deal sweetener! A little motivation to keep us on track. What will you reward yourself with (other than health and vitality) at the end of the program? Make it good… you’ll deserve it! DO I NEED TO DETOX? Your body has its own detoxification system, but like anything, if it’s overloaded, it begins to fall behind, causing a backlog of toxins in your body. The toxins that can’t be filtered out of your blood can wreak havoc on your health. And if you’re already suffering from an illness, excess toxins often make it worse. Some of the symptoms of too many toxins in your body are outlined in the box on the next page. If you suffer from any of these, you might benefit from a cleanse. If you experience any of these 70 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

symptoms, it’s your body’s way of telling you that you need a spring clean. So please, listen to your body! “Today, with more toxins than ever in the environment, it’s critical to detox,” says Linda Page, ND, PhD and author of Detoxification (Healthy Healing Publications). She recommends detoxing for symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies, low-grade infections, bags under the eyes, distended stomach (even if the rest of your body is thin), menstrual difficulties and mental confusion. Put simply, detoxing (or cleansing) involves giving your body a break from anything toxic, so it can work the excess toxins out of your system. This then gives your immune system a recharge so it’s ready to fight the good fight again. Before starting any new eating program, it’s wise to consult your health care practitioner. If at any time while doing a detox you experience discomfort, discuss this with your practitioner. It’s likely you will get headaches in the first few days, especially if you have a sugar or caffiene addiction. Around day three, you might feel a bit down and not really up to being social. These are common withdrawal

INDICATIONS YOU MAY NEED A CLEANSE Be honest, tick the boxes below if you suffer on a regular basis. You don't have to keep suffering. You might just need to give your system a good grease and oil change! Frequent headaches Poor digestion or bloating Acne or skin problems Bad breath Feeling sluggish and lacking in energy Poor sleep patterns Muscle aches and pains Inability to concentrate/sense of fogginess Anxiety and/or mood swings Recurring infections Nerve pain or numbness

symptoms. Tissue salts can help alleviate the headaches. As for the low mood, try to ride it out. DO NOT resort to a sugar hit or a glass of wine! Be strong and focus on how fantastic you will feel in a few more days. If

you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or going through a stressful time, now is not the time to do a detox. Nor is it if you’re over 75, suffer from heart disease or are significantly underweight. If you’re taking prescribed medication, check with your doctor before starting any detox program. THE GET CLEAN GET LEAN PROGRAM My Get Clean Get Lean program was created by taking the best bits from some of the wonderful Spas around the globe that I’ve been fortunate enough to visit, expert advice from a number of highly regarded naturopaths and nutritionists, combined with my first-hand experience, What I created is not a fat-loss diet, but rather a cleanse, however one of the beautiful side-effects is that you will lose fat. You don’t want to lose lean muscle tissue or too much fluid. One of the biggest criticisms of fad ‘detox’ diets is that they encourage the loss of lean muscle tissue, not fat. So even though you may lose weight on one of those

fad detox diets, the weight you’re losing is unlikely to be fat, more likely to be lean muscle tissue and water! Provided you eat protein at every meal, don’t starve yourself, and enjoy some exercise (preferably with some form of resistance). You will lose THERE’S REALLY NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT DIET FOOD THAT COMES IN fat, not lean muscle A BOX WITH COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF tissue, on the 4-Week CHEMICALS ADDED TO GIVE IT FLAVOUR, Get Clean Get Lean OR SYNTHETIC NUTRIENTS TO REPLACE program. And the THOSE DENATURED DURING THE more lean muscle you MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THEY ARE have, the faster your STILL PROCESSED FOODS THAT GENERATE metabolism! So it’s TOXINS IN YOUR BODY. BETTER IN THE BIN important to preserve your lean muscle mass. THAN IN YOUR BODY! Toxins love fat. If toxins aren’t removed from your body, they’re stored in your liver or adipose (fat) tissue. Without going into the science too much, as long as you have an excess of toxins in your body, you’ll have fat! Ironically, a lot of diets suggest special diet food. But there’s really 71

nothing special about diet food that comes in a box with copious amounts of chemicals added to give it flavour, or synthetic nutrients to replace those denatured during the manufacturing process. They are still processed foods that generate toxins in your body. Fresh is best - it really is that simple! The aim of detoxifying is to increase the function of your eliminatory organs (liver, kidneys, colon and skin), as well as draw stored toxins out of your cells. Even though exercise is an important part of wellbeing, during this program it is just as important to get adequate rest to stimulate and complete the cleansing process. If you over-exercise or place other stresses on your body, without getting adequate rest and recovery, the release of toxins will overtake the elimination, leading to recirculation in your bloodstream. This inevitably leads to headaches, tiredness, skin breakouts or rashes, nausea, cramping and decreased immunity, often to the point where a cold or flu takes hold. Detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing your body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, 72 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

a good cleanse can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health. Understanding proper nutrition can be tough when we’re given so much misinformation. Reducing your consumption of toxins doesn’t have to be a painful or scary task. We have so much fresh food available to us, why would we eat something that has been processed in a lab? I’m a big advocate of Seasonal, Local, Organic and Whole food, prepared with love and eaten SLOW-ly. Food that comes in a packet and can last in the cupboard for months is really stretching the definition of food. I say eat ‘Low HI’ ie. food with low Human Intervention. Just by cutting out processed foods and eating fresh produce, you will see a marked improvement in your health and productivity. Following the guidelines of the Get Clean Get Lean program (as close as you can) will give your liver, kidneys and lungs a huge boost, allowing them to function better and keep your blood clean and your body healthy. Again, think of detoxing your body like servicing your car, allowing it to run smoother and avoid breakdowns. You can go to http://krisabbey.com/ to purchase the full Get Clean Get Lean program, complete with meal plans and recipes designed to nourish your body, not starve it. Otherwise you can start by simply adopting my top 10 tips for clean eating (see over page) to get yourself back on the right track.

At the end of the GET CLEAN GET LEAN program, it’s likely you will experience:  More energy  More vitality  Loss of fat, not lean muscle tissue  Greater concentration and clarity  Improved skin condition and clearer eyes  Improved digestion  Improved acid/alkaline balance of the body  Improved bowel function  Greater health and wellbeing

Aim to eat at least 50% of your foods in their natural state. When you are under stress, increase this to 75%. From sashimi to strawberries, clean, wholesome foods eaten raw have remarkable health-enhancing and anti-ageing properties. This is why most of the best and most famous Spas and Health Retreats around the world serve raw food for healing and rejuvenation. Uncooked fruit and vegetables improve micro-circulation, cellular functioning and DNA expression. Eating a high percentage of raw food improves your energy and stamina, supplies a high level of bio-photon order to the living matrix, slows ageing and provides you with great antioxidant support.

Try to stay away from grain-based carbs for 4 weeks. These include flour, breakfast cereals, pasta, breads and all forms of sugar. If this is too hard, add small amounts of whole grains, such as brown rice, oats, bread made from rye, oats or spelt, quinoa, amaranth, millet and buckwheat.

02

Eat an abundance of fresh (preferably organic) fruit and vegetables every day. Non-starchy vegetables will be your main supply of carbohydrates for the next 4 weeks. Add small amounts of above if you’re feeling tired.

03

Eat at least one big, colourful salad every day. Make it as colourful as you can and add fresh herbs to give it zing. Sprinkle a good quality protein over the top (nuts, seeds, lean chicken, fish, egg or tofu) and voila! A good trick for added flavour is to sprinkle a few chilli flakes in too.

04

Cut out soft drinks, packaged fruit juces, cordials and alcohol. If you must have the occasional glass of wine, keep it to no more than two glasses of quality wine and only indulge once a week. If you can sustain this for four weeks, it’s worth it.

05

Use cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil, hazelnut oil and flaxseed oil in your salads. For cooking use butter (yes, that natural stuff that gets such a bad rap), coconut oil or olive oil, as these don’t convert to trans fats when heated, like many vegetable oils.

06

For your protein sources, choose raw, unsalted nuts, seeds, free-range eggs and non-GMO soy products. For non-vegetarians, choose oily fish (no more than three times per week), free-range chicken and turkey, and lean cuts of meat.

07

Stay as far away as you can from margarine, even those with added plant sterols that reduce cholesterol. Avoid processed and highly hydrogenated vegetable oils and any sauces or dressings that contain these oils. Make your own salad dressings with natural ingredients, fresh herbs, coldpressed oil and a good balsamic vinegar. Remember ‘low HI’. And that’s for ALL your food choices.

08

Eliminate all sugars, including malt extract, corn syrup and especially those artificial ones, which should be banned, along with all those ‘diet’ drinks that contain them! If you need a sweetener, use Manuka honey, grade A maple syrup or stevia (a sweet herb grown in South America).

09

Drink two litres of water every day. If coffee is a must-have, restrict yourself to one cup a day and drink it unsweetened and black. The same goes for tea. If you have black tea or coffee, drink two extra glasses of water to compensate for their diuretic effect.

10

If you do succumb to temptation, DO NOT beat yourself up and shower yourself in guilt. Put it behind you and get back on track. Never use it as an excuse to throw in the towel. Even applying six of these 10 tips is better than nothing. Get back to the why you’re doing this and get on with the doing.

03 COCONUT CRAZY Coconut is another one of those nuts that has copped a bad rap due to its fat content. Technically coconut is drupe - almost a cross between a fruit, nut and seed. You can see where this is going can’t you? Fruit, nut and seed in a tight, husky packet... that’s one uber health food!

So why all the bad press on something that has so many benefits? Mainly because the oil extracted from the meat of mature coconuts is primarily saturated fat. Now here’s the thing, these fats are plant-based saturated fats, composed mainly of Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs). The physiological effects of MCFAs are distinctly different to Long-Chain Fatty Acids found in animal-based saturated fats. Since MCFA fats are small enough to be absorbed into your cells where they’re quickly converted to energy, they’re less likely to be stored as fat. And there is ample research to show that people lose more weight (or fat) when they include a teaspoon or two of coconut oil in their diet. Other benefits of coconut oil - as well as coconut milk, cream and flesh - include: Protects against heart disease by increasing good cholesterol, improving the ratio of bad and good cholesterol. Helps treat malnutrition because it’s easy to digest and absorb. Kills disease-causing bacteria, fungi, yeasts and viruses because of the antimicrobial effects of MCFA (mainly due to lauric acid). Helps prevent strokes and brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Boosts metabolism and increases energy because it’s more likely to be burned as fuel than stored as body fat. The flesh provides a good source of fibre. One last thing on the oil. Because it’s saturated, it is stable at high temperatures (like butter), so is ideal for cooking, especially Asian stir-fries. If you haven’t heard all the buzz around coconut water (specifically water from the young coconut), you must have been hiding under a rock. This cloudy water is packed with electrolytes and minerals to replenish hydration levels within your body, making it a much better choice for rehydration than sugary, commercial electrolyte drinks. It also contains a great array of vitamins and minerals including B-complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine and folates. And it’s rich in bioactive enzymes that help aid digestion and metabolism. It’s no wonder they call the coconut tree the Tree of Life!

Chocolate is not an addictive food, although if you love and crave chocolate you obviously believe otherwise! Chocolate is full of mood-enhancing chemicals. It contains the same mood-enhancing chemical found in marijuana, albeit in very small quantities. What we crave more than the nutrients in chocolate is the sensory experience and its association with happy times and special occasions. Chocolate also contains fat, which in itself satisfies hunger. The key ingredient of chocolate is cocoa, providing that rich, distinctive flavour. Cocoa beans grow in large pods on cacao trees in tropical rainforests. After the pods are picked from the trees, the cocoa beans are fermented in the sun, where the natural sugars combine with heat and oxygen to develop their distinctive flavour. After fermentation, the beans are dried,

packed and sold for processing. During processing, cocoa beans are heated and the centre of the bean is extracted and ground to produce chocolate liquor. This is exposed to varying degrees of pressure and temperature to produce either liquid cocoa, butter or solid cakes of cocoa powder. Different combinations of cocoa butter and cocoa powder produce different types of chocolate products. Sweet eating chocolate is a combination of unsweetened cocoa, sugar, cocoa butter and perhaps a little vanilla. Milk chocolate has milk added and contains less unsweetened cocoa. For many years, in an effort to make great-tasting chocolate, manufacturers removed the bitter flavours or masked it with sugar, but they soon discovered that the bitter flavours were in fact antioxidants

COOKIE & PEANUT B U T T E R F U D G E PA R FA I T All recipes by GoodnessMe Box wholefood cook Kara Conroy

COOKIES

METHOD

1 cup almond meal 1 cup desiccated coconut ½ cup coconut flour 1 teaspoon vanilla powder Pinch salt ½ cup rice malt syrup ¼ cup coconut oil ¼ cup natural peanut butter ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon boiling water 100g dairy-free dark chocolate, chopped

1. 2. 3.

PEANUT BUTTER LAYER

METHOD

400ml can coconut cream 1 cup natural peanut butter ½ cup rice malt syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ - ½ cup coconut or almond milk (or preserved liquid from coconut cream can)

1. 2.

CHOCOLATE FUDGE SAUCE 200ml coconut cream ¼ cup cacao powder ¼ cup rice malt syrup ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

METHOD 1. Place all ingredients in a small bowl over a saucepan of boiling water (ie. double boiler) and gently whisk while it heats for 5-10 minutes. 2. Once thickened, remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

Pre-heat oven to 130°C (fan forced) and line tray with baking paper. Combine dry ingredients in a medium-large mixing bowl. Place rice malt, coconut oil and peanut butter in a small saucepan on low heat and stir until melted and combined. 4. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water, then add to saucepan and mix. 5. Allow to cool slightly, then pour the wet mixture into dry ingredients and mix well until a sticky dough forms. 6. Stir through the chopped chocolate. It will melt slightly due to the warm liquids, which makes them chocolatey, but still leaves some chunks! 7. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden. Cook 2 minutes less for chewy cookies or 2 minutes more for crispy cookies. 8. Allow to cool on tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire cooling rack.

Put can of coconut cream in refrigerator overnight. Carefully open the can, taking care not to shake. Scrape the thickened cream from the top and reserve the liquid to soften your peanut butter. 3. Add the vanilla to the coconut cream. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream until thick, soft peaks form. Return to frig for 20 minutes to set. 4. In a small bowl, combine the peanut butter, rice malt syrup and reserved coconut liquid (or a splash of milk), mixing well until smooth and soft. 5. Remove coconut cream from frig and add a large spoonful of peanut butter mix to the bowl. Gently beat on the lowest speed. Repeat until all peanut butter has been added, then turn to high and beat until creamy. 6. Return to frig to set.

3. 4.

Once the cookies have completely cooled, crumble a layer into the bottom of a glass jar. Remove peanut butter mousse from frig and whip with a spoon to soften. Spoon a layer on top of the cookies, followed by a layer of chocolate sauce. Repeat each layer. Finish with cookies crumbled on top to garnish. Place in frig for a few hours to set.

05 DESK-BOUND TO SPORTS GROUND

WORDS: DR RICHARD KAN MASTERS OF CHIROPRACTIC, BACHELOR OF CHIROPRACTIC SCIENCE

Not long ago, working out was synonymous with terms like boring and monotonous. Haunting mental imagery conjured up kilometres and kilometres of sweaty, tedious one foot in front of the other pounding the pavement or treadmill. Thankfully, the success of trends like functional fitness and group exercise, coupled with the rising awareness of obesity and weight management, have motivated more people to row, cycle and skip to fitness facilities near them! Movement and sport has always carried the inherent risk of injury. As our lifestyles have become more sedentary and time-poor, we have found our workouts condensed into high intensity, dynamically challenging, hour-long sessions. The majority of us go straight from work, where we’ve been sitting, to our commute, again sitting, to arrive at the gym raring to go with five minutes to change and limber up. We often find ourselves allotting less and less time to warming up. Even when we do, it’s a quick stretch of the hamstrings and swinging our arms around in circles.

86 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

SO HOW SHOULD WE TRANSITION FROM BEING DESK-BOUND TO THE SPORTS GROUND? In CrossFit, mobility and corrective exercise has been elevated to something of a pseudo-religion. They understand that rolling around on the floor with a ball like a child with a new toy, doing bear walks across the gym floor or squats with bands around their knees have a higher function than just mindless play. These drills help shake off your daily dose of sitting, typing or driving to move correctly, efficiently and somewhtat effortlessly. These days, everybody seems to know someone with sore, achy shoulders, pinching back pain or horribly tight hips. So here are a few simple tips to get moving better and help stay off the inflammation highway to injury city. It’s important to note that if any of these drills aggravate or intensify your pain, then you should stop immediately. You may experience some discomfort and stretching sensations, but contact a health professional if you have any concerns.

SHOULDERS

HIPS

Thoracic Spine Rolling Lie face up on top of a foam roller, or peanut, and slowly scan your entire mid-back region from the base of your neck to your lowest ribs. You’ll feel some tight sore spots while doing this, so just sink in to these points for 15-30 seconds and you’ll feel them release. Continue for 1-2 minutes or until you’re bored.

Adductor Mash Lie face down with your leg turned outwards and place a foam roller directly on your inner leg (adductor muscles). Roll from the inside of the knee up to the top of your groin, again slowly scanning for tight and painful areas. As before, hold these points for 15-30 seconds, then move on to the next area. This is an especially important area to pay attention to for soccer players and people squatting in weightlifting situations.

Lumbar Erector Spinae Mash Grab a ball and place it directly on either side of your spine, while laying face up. Similar to previous exercises using a ball, search for tight areas and give them some love. Your erector spinae muscle group runs from the top of your butt all the way upwards. If you’re struggling to trap the muscles under the ball, try leaning into a wall, which allows you more control than lying down, however you won’t feel the stretch as deeply.

Gluteal Release Sit on a hard surface with a mobility ball directly under your bottom. Keep both knees bent and your feet on the floor. Slowly roll the ball around, hunting for those tight corners. Pay attention to each tight spot for 15-30 seconds. This exercise is usually accompanied by agonising groans and grunts, so don’t be too worried if there’s a little pain, but stop if you feel any tingling sensations run down your leg, as you’re sitting on your sciatic nerve.

Quadratus Lumborum Stretch Stand side-on to a door frame about one foot away and reach overhead to grab the frame. Lean out and push your opposite hip away from the door frame until you feel a stretch in the side of your trunk. Make sure you don’t arch your lower back or bend at the hips, as this takes away from the stretch. To ramp this stretch up, you can cross your legs so your away-side foot is closer to the door frame.

Latissimus Dorsi Stretching with Resistance Band Tie a resistance band to a squat rig or pull-up bar above your head, then place your arm through and grip the band. Turn your hand palm-up and raise your arm overhead with the elbow slightly bent. Lean in to the band, until you feel a good stretch in your flank below your armpit. Hold this position for at least 30 seconds.

With these tools, you’ll be as supple as a leopard in no time. Mobility and correctives should be an essential part of your training routine to avoid ongoing poor quality movement. Countless people are surprised at the amount of aches and pains that can be prevented by simply stretching or mobilising. These exercises should be prescribed by a therapist and individualised to each person depending on their daily activities, hobbies and physical pursuits. Injuries and pains get you sidelined and halt your progress in the gym or on the field, so investing small amounts of time in your musculoskeletal health will eventually pay off huge dividends down the track.

for more than just aesthetics. It’s for life, your health and your happiness! Here are my five top tips for you to implement into your life to ensure you reach peak physical and mental health. If you can focus on these five key points, then you’ll be one step ahead of the game.

exercise like jogging. If you’re on a time budget to train, then this method will suit you. Most gyms offer HIIT training classes, Why not try one? And remember to wear your heart rate device!

1 LIFT WEIGHTS. Why? Mainly for the fact that you will sculpt and define your physique, so you look athletic and trim. We’ve all heard the term ‘skinny fat’ - basically someone who looks thin, but actually has quite a high body fat percentage due to their poor muscle mass. Dense muscle does not mean heavy either. You can still remain light and strong. Bodybuilding will make you look bulky and heavy, lifting weights won’t. You’ll also reduce your likelihood of injury as strength training increases your bone density and joint tendon strength. Pumping iron also supports weight loss far more than cardio training alone. This is because as you build more muscle, and because muscle has a much faster metabolism than fat, your overall metabolism increases. As a result, your body burns more calories just sitting still. Win win! For beginners to lifting, aim to attend a strength/pump class at your local gym. For the experienced lifter, try my 4-week strength program. maximum results. Your heart rate plays an important role in physical exercise and I advise anyone who exercises to train using their heart rate as a guide. It’s a safe way of exercising, as well as a smart way. In

physical exercise, our heart rates are broken down into 5 zones: Zone 1: 50-60% of your maximum Zone 2: 60-70% Zone 3: 70-80% Zone 4: 80-90% Zone 5: 90-100% Training within each different zone gives you a different outcome. To find out your heart rate zones, I advise you to purchase a Fitbit or other electronic device that accurately measures your heart rate. Maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. From this figure, you can determine what your heart rate should be in each zone. If you’re new to fitness, start in Zone 1 and gradually work your way up. Fitbits and smart watches can also accurately track how many calories you’re burning every workout, which is great for motivation too. 3 CUT THE CARDIO into small, intense, bite-sized chunks, rather than one big, steady workout. Again, this comes down to your heart rate. If you spike your heart rate to near maximum efforts for short intervals with little rest periods in between efforts, it creates a metabolic effect that results in you continuing to burn calories post-exercise. Scientists have now proven that you can burn the same amount of calories in 20 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) than you can in 90 minutes of steady-state cardio

4 CARBS ARE GOOD but must be consumed intelligently throughout the day. Aim to eat the bulk of your carbs early in the day, then fade your intake as the day progresses. Eat a good source protein with every main meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and snack on good fats like nuts, rather than bread or potato chips. Be aware of hidden added sugars in many foods and drinks. Drink plenty of water through the day to keep yourself hydrated, which allows your liver to focus on helping break down fats to use for energy. 5 REST AND NOT STRESSED. If your body is in a stressed state, then it produces high amounts of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol promotes fat storage and guess where? Yep, around your hips and stomach! Aim for 6 to 8 hours of good sleep each night and turn your phone off about 45 minutes before turning the lights out to sleep. 30 minutes of light reading is perfect. Meditate, even if for just 10 minutes every other day. You’ll be surprised how much it changes your state of mind. There are guided meditation apps if you’re not a natural zen type of person. My personal favourite is ‘ONE GIANT MIND’ - free to download from the app store. When it comes to great health, it’s all about balance. You can train the house down and eat well, but if your body is under-rested and over-stressed, then you’re fighting a losing battle. Fat loss will not occur as efficiently as you desire. Everyone is busy, but try to focus on these five habits. Your health and wellbeing will definitely benefit!

WELLNESS

L A S T M A N S TA N D I N G AT T H E S P A !

WORDS: NEIL OWEN

The global wellness industry was recently estimated to be worth a whopping $3.7 trillion and is growing. Wellness can be defined in many ways, however from an individual’s perspective, it is an active process of becoming aware of - and making choices towards - a healthy and fulfilling life.

90 | spaandwellnessinternational.com

We are constantly informed via multiple media channels as to how we can improve this facet of our life, whether it’s advice on how to eat healthier, improve our sleeping patterns or become more active through exercise. Unfortunately, several modern-day elements of wellness, such as pilates, yoga, massage and Spa, are still perceived as ‘dark arts’ by many men. I want to change this by providing a male perspective of the real world of wellness. This will be based on my experiences working and travelling in the industry over the past 20 years, combined with my background in sports science and alternative therapies. I will try to dispel industry myths, discuss trends and share personal experiences, with the ultimate aim of encouraging more men - and women - to embrace wellness, while having some fun along the way! I’m not asking you to give up the bar, but please at least try the Spa. Rest assured you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s 3.30am and I find myself wide awake in bed staring into darkness. A storm has just passed overhead and I can hear and feel the breath of our 2½-year-old son in my ear, having snuck into our bed when awoken by the storm. It’s been a particularly stormy spring and I’ve felt myself short of breath on many occasions, to the point that I’ve been prescribed inhalers from my GP to open up my airways and assist with my breathing. It was explained to me that the moisture from the thunderstorms rupture pollen into tiny particles small enough to enter the lungs. The wind from the storms lifts the pollen off the ground, allowing it to be inhaled, which can trigger asthma symptoms including shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness. Although

I’ve been told that my particular asthma condition may be seasonal or temporary, it’s a new challenge in my life that I certainly wasn’t expecting at the tender age of 42, We take breathing for granted and why not? It’s something we’ve all been doing since the moment we thrust our little heads into the world. Breathing is part of the respiratory system, which is a core component of the autonomic nervous system that supposedly doesn’t need to be consciously directed. However, as the recent ‘Thunderstorm Asthma’ in Victoria proved - when eight people died and thousands flooded the city’s emergency rooms - many of us are being more affected by environmental factors and need to manage our lifestyles accordingly. What can we do, especially as many of these fatal cases were people who had not even been diagnosed with asthma? Being aware of changes in breathing patterns and knowing when something isn’t right is critical. Knowing when to seek medical attention is the first and most important step. Developing your awareness of breath is something everyone can improve upon as part of improving their overall health and wellness. Believe it or not, breath awareness does not come naturally to all of us and very few of us have been trained to breathe correctly.

If you thought yoga was all about bending and twisting your body into

odd shapes in a room full of nutters wearing spandex, headbands and fluorescent leg-warmers, then think again! Controlling your breath - or Pranayama, as it’s called within yogic circles - is an integral part of the discipline and is taught alongside the adoption of specific body postures and meditation to enhance overall health and wellness. There are various forms of yoga, which can be confusing. For those starting out, look for a beginner’s class in Hatha Yoga and work your way from there. Contrary to what you may think, you don’t have to be an Adonis to practice yoga. It’s for all shapes and sizes, and classes are available for all ability levels, including beginners. If you’re seeking a more sedentary approach, try meditation, which can be practised in either a class environment or on your own through guided audio sessions. Once you become more in tune with your breathing, you can exercise your breath in your own personal way and integrate this into other daily activities, such as walking the dog or even sitting at your desk at work. Your boss will never know, as long as you don’t drop off! Despite its surge in popularity, and some historical and anecdotal evidence that Salt Therapy benefits a range of respiratory conditions, according to the Lung Foundation of Australia there is no scientific evidence yet to support these claims. Modern Salt Therapy has its origins in the salt mines and caves of eastern Europe. In 1843, Dr Feliks Boczkowski, a Polish doctor, documented how salt mine workers didn’t seem to suffer from the same respiratory problems as coal miners. Luckily, you don’t have to travel as far as eastern Europe for a salt fix as Salt Therapy is now easily accessible throughout Australia and many other 91

countries. The salt can manifest itself in various forms, either in salt caves or man-made facilities, and is available in both dedicated salt therapy centres or luxury spas who have integrated salt into their overall relaxation program. The salt is dispersed in various ways from salt bricks to liquid brine. Microscopic particles of dry salt aerosol are dispersed into the room for you to inhale. The belief is that breathing in very small salt crystals helps open up the airways, reduce inflammation and reduce the build-up of mucus, allowing more room in the airways for you to breathe. Salt Therapy is used by all ages and it’s not uncommon to find specific areas set up for children with toys and entertainment to keep them occupied during sessions. I hear you thinking ‘Salt Sports Bars’. I like the idea, but sadly I’m not aware of any in existence yet!

Developing your breath is not just for those suffering from asthma or respiratory conditions. Think of breathing as a bodily function you can always strengthen and develop to enhance your quality of life, today and in the future. You cannot underestimate its importance. When you get a quiet moment, close your eyes and listen, because as Italian author Giovanni Papini rightly proclaimed: “Breathing is the greatest pleasure in life.” It’s official, you can’t actually catch your breath. You can, however, look after the one you have.

08 W I L L YO U A D M I T YO U N E E D H E L P ? What do you do when all the boxes in life appear to be ticked, but sadness nevertheless shackles itself to your soul?

WORDS: ANGELA RASPASS

I WA S V E RY G O O D AT P R O J E C T I N G T H E “EVERYTHING IS JUST FINE AND DANDY OVER HERE” IMAGE, F I R M LY E N S C O N C E D IN THE ACHIEVER ARCHETYPE AND C L O S E LY A C C O M P A N I E D BY I T S C O M PA N I O N , T H E PEOPLE PLEASER, AND H E R C L O S E A S S O C I AT E , T H E P E R F E C T I O N I S T.

What do you do when there is a deep divide between the image you project to the world and the way you actually feel inside? And what do you do when your sense of self-worth has eroded over time, replaced by a belief that nothing you ever do quite measures up, that you’re simply not good enough, no matter how hard you try? I discovered there are a great many things I could do, but that none of them, in the short term, were good for me, or addressed the core issue. If you’d met me in early 2006, you would have seen a confident and capable woman in her late thirties with a strong marriage, a lovely home on Sydney’s leafy north shore, two beautiful kids and a blossoming small business that was launched after a successful career in the media and advertising industry. You may have even envied me a little and wondered how I managed to juggle all I did with a smile on my face. I was very good at projecting the “everything is just fine and dandy over here” image, firmly ensconced in the Achiever archetype and closely accompanied by its companion,

the People Pleaser, and her close associate, the Perfectionist. If you’d looked a little closer, you would have seen the cracks beginning to appear. But I always made sure I moved too quickly to allow that to happen. A whirlwind of activity masked a deepening self-doubt crisis that lingered just below the surface. I was fighting hard to keep my head above water. Under no circumstances was I going to reveal what was really going on. There was simply too much shame involved. That skeleton was staying firmly locked in the closet, thank you very much. And when no one was watching, when the fear and painful inner dialogue of self-loathing became too much, too loud - which by this stage was multiple times a day - I turned to the only relief I knew: the elixir of alcohol. And the cycle would commence: pain - drink - relief shame. Pain - drink - relief - shame... I’m a pretty smart and determined person. A person who sets and achieves goals. So I was completely perplexed as to what was wrong with me. Why couldn’t I break this cycle? What was wrong with me? Where was my willpower, damn it! I was deeply ashamed of my behaviour and it was that shame that had kept me stuck for so long. It was taking a huge toll on me emotionally and had begun to threaten the relationships that were most important to me. But thank god I did eventually escape. When you pause to look back on your life with hindsight, you can often see the connections, the small, seemingly unrelated, actions that led you to an awakening, a new chapter. It started, as things often do, with reading a book: “Drinking: A Love Story” by Carolyn Knapp. It shone like a beacon to me when I saw it on the bookstore shelf. I devoured it. For the first time, I was hearing someone else

describe what I was experiencing. How alcohol and I had started out as good friends. How it gave me wittiness and confidence and fun and many happy memories of dinner parties and celebrations and more. Knapp shared how, at some point, the companionship had crossed the line in neediness. Co-dependence. Choice had been removed and addiction had moved into its place. I heard for the first time the words ‘high-functioning alcoholic’ and something clicked for me. It was a term I could relate to. The classic picture of an alcoholic is someone who always drinks too much too often and whose life is falling apart because of it. Take that one step further and your mind tends to conjure up the stereotypical image of an older man in an overcoat coat on a park bench clutching a paper bag. But not all problem drinking fits that mould. Some people seem to manage fine for quite some time while they rely on, or abuse, alcohol. Experts call these people ‘functional alcoholics’ or ‘high-functioning alcoholics’. I realised I was one of those people. I’d love to tell you that the very next day I went out and got the help I needed and lived happily ever after. But it wasn’t quite like that. Despite my new-found knowledge, I was still the same person, someone determined to ‘fix myself, by myself’. It took several months - and in hindsight, some pretty amusing attempts - to try to do that, including subliminal messaging CDs, imported herbs to decrease my cravings, maniacal amounts of exercise, a controlled drinking program and many more. Some of these things worked for a short time, but I always retuned to the habit of a lifetime when pain and shame visited me. For me, the beginning of my new life finally came when I surrendered

and accepted help. A stay in a Sydney rehab centre enabled me to break the cycle, begin to understand the scientific and emotional truth about addiction, and introduced me to the Recovery Movement, a lifesaving movement that I have stayed close to ever since. My commitment to understanding who, and what, I am, and most importantly what I need to anchor myself in a sense of inherent worthiness, continues today. This new journey of discovery is a delight. My biggest realisations are simple ones.

YO U CA N N OT F I X A N INSIDE PROBLEM WITH OUTSIDE SOLUTIONS. I applied so many patches and band-aids to myself when I was struggling in the midst of addiction. I worked harder. I tried to distract and discipline myself. Nothing worked for long because the deeper problem was inside of me and I needed… Self-compassion Berating yourself, punishing yourself harshly, believing what your Inner Critic has to say about you, thinking you’re lazy and broken and essentially bad,

will never help. Gentleness and selfcompassion are essential, as counter intuitive as they may sometimes feel. Asking for help Determination is an admirable trait and it will serve you well when it’s coupled with the correct knowledge and expert help. Self-awareness is critical, but it needs to be followed by a willingness to surrender, to admit there is something that you cannot solve yourself and to accept the ample help that is always there when you seek it. I’m one of the lucky ones. In November 2016, I celebrated 10 years of sobriety and my world has been beautifully expanded and deeply enriched as a result. The journey from self-loathing to worthiness has not been an easy one. When my anesthetic was removed, I felt raw, vulnerable and very, very scared. Shame and guilt shackled me for some time, but fellow travellers have showered me with empathy, experience, strength and hope. I’ve been loved back to health and I know it’s a part of my own purpose to share my story, and perhaps open the door for another person to step through into wholehearted living in their own next chapter.
