WAYS TO SAY THANKS! SIDEWALK CHALK A BIG THANK YOU IN YOUR DRIVEWAY OR FENCE. It could be for the grocery clerk next door, or the nurse that lives down the street, or anyone driving by that goes to work every day to help the community in some way. If you have a neighbor that is a hero in your mind, mention them specifically in your drawing.

DRESS LIKE A SUPERHERO AND GO ON A WALK. Salute the garbage men, landscapers, and other workers still out doing the jobs that have to be done.

HANG SIGNS IN YOUR WINDOWS. Show your appreciation by posting a big thank you sign in your window, or in your car. Bringing smiles to everyone during these troubling times will go a long way to help us all through it.

TREAT THEM. Have lunch or even just afternoon coffees delivered from a local restaurant to the fire station, police department or doctors office you know is having to work through this.

POST A THANK YOU ON ALL YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS. You may not think it is much, but with all the negative feedback on the internet, the positive messages are very much appreciated and vital to keep up the spirits of everyone on the front lines.

DRAW A PICTURE AND BE IN OUR VIRTUAL ART SHOW ON FACEBOOK. We will host a virtual art show on our Facebook page during the month of April- look for the post, add your child’s drawing, and we will post a virtual art show on April 26th- National Superhero Day!

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES. Even if a business isn’t physically open during this, they are still heroes in our hearts. Many are struggling to continue to pay employees with little to no income. Purchase gift cards, schedule your kids’ summer birthday parties or summer camps now, or make a donation if you can.

DON’T FORGET THE TEACHERS! The local school districts and teachers have been working non-stop to keep our kids learning. Have your kids send them a card online or connect on a Face-time call if possible. The teachers are missing their students as much as the students are missing them.

STAY HOME! HELP FLATTEN THE CURVE! Regardless of how healthy you may feel, staying home and “flattening the curve,” is what will help the most and be most appreciated by those working in the front lines. See our ideas on family activities, virtual fun and resources in our weekly eblasts each Wednesday to help you through the weeks ahead. Sign up for our eblasts on Facebook.

STOP PUT A HALT TO SIBLING RIVALRY

Sibling rivalry can be very frustrating for parents, especially while everyone is stuck at home during the covid-19 pandemic. Below are some tips to help curb the rivalry, and build some camaraderie. Stop comparing. Every child has their own talents and short falls. When you compare your kids, it just makes them resentful of each other, which causes more struggles. Create a team environment. Having your family work together on projects from time to time teaches them that they can work together towards a common goal, and will encourage them to do so in other areas of their life. (Plant a flower bed, wash the car, etc…)

around the block, watching their favorite show on Disney Plus, or playing a game. Let your child choose the activity, and make sure you give them your full attention- no phones, no distractions. Validate their feelings. Everyone gets angry with others from time to time. It is important that children know these feelings are normal, but there are appropriate ways to express themselves.

Take a break. If they can’t work it out on their own, they should take some time apart until they can find a resolution. Have them make a list of things they can do to help them cool down. (Read a book, take a walk, listen to music, etc…)

Let them settle it. Unless it becomes physical, it is usually best to encourage them to settle their own disputes. Encourage them to listen to each other and find a compromise. These are skills that will help them through all stages of life.

One on one time. Give each child individual undivided attention. While we can’t currently take them to lunch or a movie, you can achieve the same effect by going on a walk

Don’t force them to always play together. Everyone needs time to themselves to regroup and recharge. They shouldn’t be forced to play together if one needs some down time.

ADVERTISE WITH US! CALL 281-480-3600

Get some exercise. Regular exercise is not only good for the body, but it’s good for the mind, too. When you feel good mentally, you are better equipped to handle conflicts. Set the pace. When kids see you and your spouse or other family members settling disputes with fairness and respect, they take notice. When you have an argument that they witness, explain to them how you were able to compromise so that everyone was satisfied with the resolution. Don’t force them to share everything. Each child should have items that are theirs, and theirs alone. In the case of community items, teach them to take turns. If they can’t work it out, the item will have to be taken away from everyone until they can settle their dispute. If you can guide them to find appropriate ways to settle conflicts with their siblings while they are young, they will be better prepared for getting along with peers and coworkers as they get older.
