Each year that my son’s birthday rolls around and he wants to have a slumber party, my wife nods yes and then weeps in the coat closet, and I paint signs that read: You Break, You Buy! After all, having one pre-teen boy in the house is grounds for insanity. Inviting five more boys to the house borders on criminal intent. When it boils right down to it, boys are gross, ill mannered, loud, and destructive. And they know this. In fact, they celebrate it. But, unfortunately, as long as other parents have slumber parties for their kids and invite my son

to them, I am forced to reciprocate. So, once again, my wife and I opened the doors last weekend for an overnight birthday bash in honor of our son. And, as is customary, each child’s parent stood on my porch, pushed their son inside the door, and repeated the standard line we all learned in Lamaze: “Call me if my son is any trouble.” Then, he or she ran to his or her car, unplugged the cell phone, and bought a one-way ticket to Bermuda...or so it felt standing there waving goodbye to the last car as six boys slid down the
house noting the damage. Later, I walked into the living room and asked my wife:
