We all know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best prevention for heart disease. Still, according to the CDC, coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. In addition, the obesity rate for us and our children continues to rise, adding to the risk of heart disease. Start taking steps today to lower yours and your families risk. These simple ideas will not only benefit your heart, but your overall lifestyle, as well.
1. If you ride a bus, get off a stop before your destination. Walk the rest of the way.
2. Think of housework as an extra chance to exercise. Vacuuming briskly can be a real workout.
3. Take the stairs instead of an elevator or escalator at school or the mall. Just start with one flight. Soon, you’ll be ready for two.
4. Park your car at the far end of the parking lot. The short walk to and from the store or school helps your heart.
5. Spend a few minutes of your lunch break taking a stroll around. This will also help you stay awake after lunch.
6. Drink 6-8 8oz. glasses of water every day.
7. Eat fish often, and limit your red meat. Take omega-3 fatty acids, and get your five servings of fruit and vegetables every day.
8. Limit screen time - get outside and ride your bike or fly a kite instead.
9. If you have a dog, think of the dog as an exercise machine with fur. A brisk walk with the dog is good for both of your hearts. Make it a part of your daily routine.
10. If you have a family, schedule an after-dinner walk. Make it quality time.
11. Maintain a healthy weight.
12. Do not smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke.
13. Get your cholesterol levels and blood pressure checked.
14. See your doctor / pediatrician for all regularly scheduled visits.
DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW SUFFER FROM A CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE?
Congenital Heart Disease is America’s #1 birth defect and kills twice as many children than all childhood cancers combined.
Though a healthy lifestyle does not prevent Congenital Heart Disease, it does promote a better life quality and happy life.

GOOD DENTAL HABITS
BEGIN EARLY, and by caring for your children’s mouth and teeth as early as you can, you will help them develop good dental habits.
• No teeth yet? Wipe baby’s gums with a clean, damp cloth after each feeding and at bedtime to control the accumulation of plaque.
• Begin brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they come in with a soft infant toothbrush and water. Unless it is advised by your child’s pediatric dentist, do not use fluoridated toothpaste until age 2-3.
• Flossing should begin when two adjacent teeth touch.
• Avoid putting anything other than water in baby’s bed-time bottle to prevent baby-bottle tooth decay.
• Encourage your child to drink from a cup as they approach their first birthday.
• Drinking juice from a bottle should be avoided, it should only be offered in a cup.
• Dental sealants are an excellent way to prevent tooth decay in children. This procedure takes only minutes, is painless, is less than half the cost of a filling and is effective at stopping decay.
• Children involved in sports need proper mouth protection. Ask your child’s dentist about customized mouth guards.
• If a permanent tooth gets knocked out follow these procedures: gently rinse (not scrub) the tooth off and place it in a cup of warm milk (salt water is the second best choice; plain water, the third best), call the dentist and bring the child and the soaking tooth in immediately.
SPACE CITY PARENT | PEARLAND PARENT | FORT BEND PARENT | KATY PARENT 6 | space city publishing
According to the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD: Your child’s first dental visit should be within a few months of the first baby tooth erupting or by the age of one at the latest. Swallowing fluoridated toothpaste at a young age can lead to fluorosis (discoloration) of your child’s permanent teeth.
