IN CLEAR LAKE
According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, if one parent is obese, there is a 50 percent chance that their children will also be obese. But when exercise becomes part of the family culture, everyone wins.
Here are 10 ways to turn exercise into a regular family activity that’s fun, motivating, and healthy.
PICK THE RIGHT TIME.
Plan your workouts for a time with the highest probability that everyone will actually do them. After dinner is a great time for a family walk, game of badminton, or workout DVD, because you’re all together. After school is also a great time for kids who’ve been sitting all day and have a lot of pent-up energy.
VARY IT.
Adults often forget that play is exercise. If you take a walk one day, go bowling the next. Work, such as gardening or stacking wood, is also exercise. Don’t limit your idea of exercise to going to the gym. Anything that gets your family moving counts.
TRACK IT.
Mark the calendar every time you do an activity, and keep track of your progress. It’s very motivating to see how often everyone is exercising. If your kid responds to competition, keep a chart of games won, best times, miles cycled, and so on. Tracking is a good way to make new fitness-oriented behaviors stick.
GIVE ME FIVE.
If getting the kids to commit to exercising is difficult, tell them you’re only going to do it for five minutes--long enough to at least break a
small sweat. Doing a five-minute bike ride or a five-minute jog is easy for anyone. Most likely, it will turn into 10.
GET OUTSIDE.
Make it a habit to get the family out in nature. An easy way to do this is to swap an indoor workout session with an outdoor one. Playing a backyard game or walking around the block delivers a motivational twofer. Not only will the exercise make everyone feel better, but fresh air and sunshine are mood boosters as well.
DO IT FOR A CAUSE.
If you’re a family of couch potatoes, sometimes a good cause can get you motivated. Research which local organizations are hosting fundraising walks--and then get your friends and relatives to sponsor your family.
SCHEDULE IT.
Kids and adults alike respond well to a structured schedule. Set a time and place for your activity and write it on the calendar. Ask everyone to commit to your fitness appointment. If you’ve scheduled a bike ride but the weather is uncooperative, turn on the Wii and play tennis indoors, or blast some music and have a dance competition.
PUT IT IN WRITING.
Write a three-month contract with family members and have everyone sign it. If weight loss is a goal, write down a reasonable goal (no more than 6 pounds a month). Sign it and keep it in a place where all family members can see it.
GET THEIR INPUT.
Ask your kids to take charge of the family exercise schedule for a week--and promise that you’ll do whatever they choose. You’ll probably be surprised at the creative ideas they come up with.
THINKOUTSIDETHEBOX.
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can’t go swimming. Find a local indoor pool. Or do an activity you’ve never done--such as learning to rock climb at a climbing gym, or riding horses. Parents vs. kids competitions are always a hit. So are “old-fashioned” games like Twister, jump rope, and kick the can.

Through the eyes of a child, Thanksgiving is a letdown holiday. Sandwiched between the candy rush of October and gift giving holidays of December, it seems like more of a holiday for the adults. To make matters worse, the kids are seated at a separate table, shushed during the football game and sent from the room just as the conversation gets good. This year, let’s make this holiday more kid-friendly.
As a child, I loved watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving on TV. Since 1973, the Charles Schultz classic has entertained millions of kids on and around Thanksgiving Day. How many of us fantasized about eating jelly beans and popcorn instead of our mother’s green bean casserole? This year, make the kids’ table the best one in the house by recreating Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving. Entertain the kids with crafts, games and of course, Chef Snoopy’s famous Thanksgiving meal (Jelly beans, popcorn, pretzels and toast). It will be a Thanksgiving they will never forget!
Dinner and a Show
Decorate the kid’s table with a disposable green table cloth. Add some white tape lines and you have recreated the ping pong table where Snoopy served his guests. While I am sure the kids would count Jelly Beans as a vegetable, this mom believes that the kids have to eat everything on their plate from the traditional family meal before participating in Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving. The kids will rush through their dinner, so when they are done, allow them to watch a screening of the A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. This will give the parents an extra half hour to eat in peace. When the movie is over, move onto the crafts:
Crafts
Charlie Brown Shirts. Purchase solid yellow shirts at the craft store along with black felt sheets. Make a template of the zigzag pattern from Charlie Brown’s famous shirt. Have the kids trace it on the black felt, cut it out and hot glue it in place. Make one zigzag for each side of the shirt.
Chef Snoopy Hat. Gather two 8 ½ by 11 sheets of white paper, a sheet of black felt and parchment paper for each hat. See sidebar for assembly instructions. When the hats are made, trace and cut out Snoopy ears from the black felt and hot glue on the inside of the hat.
Mini Football Pillow. Use brown or NFL printed fabric to a make a tie-closed pillow. Make a template in two sizes – 22” and 17”. Trace the larger template onto the fabric and cut out two ovals. On the cut pieces, trace the smaller template on the back side. Have the kids cut 1” strips from the large oval edge to the line of the smaller oval. Then tie the two pieces together with the strips, leaving a couple open at the end to stuff
with filling. When stuffed, tie the rest of the strips together. For an added touch, use white felt and hot glue to create the football stitches.
Games:
Popcorn Eating Contest. Popcorn was a staple at Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving. To play the game, give every player a small bowl of popcorn and two pretzel rods. On go, the first person to finish eating his bowl of popcorn, using only the pretzel rods to pick it up, is the winner.
Jelly Bean Separation Anxiety. Place a handful of jelly beans in front of each person. The players have to separate the jelly beans by color into piles or paper cups. The first one to separate all their jelly beans is the winner.
Pin the Football in the Goal. A spin on Pin the Tail on the Donkey, this game is one for all ages. Create a goal post out of paper and stick it to the wall. Cut out miniature footballs for the players to pin. Blindfold the players and see who can get their football in the goal.
Charlie Brown Trivia. This is a good game for older kids who have seen the movie “a million times”. Come up with your own questions by watching the movie ahead of time or use our questions! A printable can be found on our website at www.spacecitypublishing.com.
Happy Thanksgiving, Charlie Brown!
Snoopy Chef Hat
Supplies needed to make
one hat:
• 2 pieces of white computer paper
• 5 feet of white parchment paper
• 1 rubber band (elastic)
• 1 sheet of black felt
• Stapler
• Scotch Tape
Tape two pieces of computer paper together at shorter end. Fold the paper in half lengthwise and then in half again. This will be the band of the hat.
Measure the band around the child’s head and cut off any excess paper.
Fold the parchment paper back and forth as if you are making a fan (1” strips).
Open up the fan and tape inside the folded band of the hat. Staple into place starting in middle and on ends and then filling in between the staples.
Wrap band in a circle but do not secure. Gather up fanned parchment paper and wrap the rubber band around the edge to hold it together.
Now flip the band inside out so the rubber band is hidden inside the hat.
Secure the band to fit the child’s head
Fluff out the hat so it is puffy on the sides.
Trace and cut out Snoopy ears on black felt Hot glue the ears to the inside of the band
Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to gather – up until dinner is over, that is. When their bellies are full, the men retire to watch football, the kids scatter to empty rooms and the women are often left with kitchen duty. Avoid the after dinner segregation and keep them together with these seven Thanksgiving games and activities.
Leaf Blower
Split the group into two teams. Each team needs to blow a leaf from Point A to Point B using a straw in a relay race style. The next player will blow it back from Point B to Point A until everyone has had a turn. First team to finish wins.
Dress the Turkey
Select a volunteer from the family to be the turkey. Using brown crepe paper streamers, wrap up the turkey until he is covered. Decorate the turkey with a yellow beak, feet and colorful feathers made from construction paper or foam sheets. Don’t forget your camera!
I was So Hungry
This memory game is a fun way to get the party laughing. The first player starts, “I was so hungry, I ate a juicy drumstick for Thanksgiving.” The next person adds something like, “I was so hungry I ate a juicy drumstick and a mound of mash potatoes for Thanksgiving.” Keep repeating and adding until the whole party is stuffed.
Pass the Cranberries
Using a turkey baster, pick up a cranberry and bring it to a bowl on the other side of the room. The first team to pass all their cranberries from one bowl to the other is the winner.
Stu ed Turkey
Wrap a piece of candy in brown box tape. Continue to wrap the tape in a ball, adding additional pieces of candy as you go. The size of the ball will depend on how many players and candy you have. (This is a great way to use up the rest of your Halloween candy.) To play, place the ball in the center of the table. Using a pair of dice, each player takes a turn rolling for doubles. If you get doubles, you can start unwrapping the ball to get candy for as long as it takes the next player to get doubles. The ball is then passed to that player and so on until the ball is completely unwrapped.
Toss & Tell
All players sit in a circle. Start by tossing a small turkey stuffed animal or small football to a player and ask a question like, “Who do you think will make it to the Super Bowl this year?” or “What is your favorite memory from elementary school?” This multigenerational game will be a hit!
Fill your Plate
This is a two part game. Use free printables of Thanksgiving meal items – drumstick, cranberries, potatoes, stuffing, corn and pie. Have the kids color and cut out their dinner items. When everything is colored, pass out a paper plate to each player. The game is a spin off of the Cootie game, but instead of building a bug, we are filling our plate. Assign each meal item with a number and each time a player rolls the die, he gets to put that item on his plate. Whoever fills their plate first is the winner.
