Doctor Doctor If you have health concerns about your baby don’t feel uncomfortable calling the pediatrician or advice nurse. Trust your instincts and call. It’s better to err on the side of caution. Always call the doctor if the baby develops a rash or a very high fever.

Don’t Take It Personally After you have a baby everyone you meet will offer advice. Don’t take their suggestions personally. You’re not doing anything wrong! Mothers love to dispense helpful information. After all, they’ve been there as well, at one time or another. Use what works for you and toss out the rest.

Ready or not your baby is coming! As a new mommy there will be a lot of uncertainty (and possibly tons of unanticipated guilt!). Am I doing this right? Is my baby eating too often, not often enough? Is he sleeping enough, pooping enough? Is his poop supposed to be that color? At times, you may think you are doing it all wrong.

Sherrie Palm, President of APOPS (Association for Pelvic Floor Prolapse Support) says, “The pc muscle (pelvic floor muscle) is the primary source of support for the pelvic organs and much damage can occur to it during childbirth. Women do not realize they should be contracting their pc muscles before they pick up their children and that any heavy lifting can create pelvic floor muscle problems, particularly if done too soon after childbirth.”

Hush Little Mama Sleep when the baby sleeps. “Who cares about the cleaning and the laundry—take a nap while the baby sleeps. You’ll thank yourself for it,” says Krystal Luster, a mother of two from Portland, Oregon.

Even with the plethora of information available for new moms, I’d be willing to bet that a few tips will elude you. Here are some practical insights nobody told me that I wish I had known as a brand new mommy: Got Milk Don’t hesitate to call the lactation consultant if you have any questions about nursing, they are there for you (and your milk ducts). Nursing doesn’t come naturally to every woman. Like most things in life, you fare far better with a little instruction. So don’t be afraid to ”Whenask. I was in the hospital I asked every nurse that came in my room for advice. Was I doing it right? Is the baby latched on correctly? Did they have any suggestions? They all offered great advice, each from their own experience. I left the hospital with a little more confidence about nursing,” says Lisa Banks, mother of two from Beaverton, Oregon.

Don’t lift anything heavier than your baby for the first month. Your body has been through a lot and needs some serious pampering and maybe even a bit of damage control. Also, as soon as the doctor gives the okay, start doing those Kegel exercises.

Heavy Lifting

Aaahh, Spa Day Take a shower everyday! You’ll feel better, have more energy and definitely smell better. Before you have a baby, you might think it’s absurd that you would need to be reminded. But after, you might want to appoint a few people to remind you to take care of such things so you can take care of you. Help me, Help you If someone offers their help (bringing dinner over, doing your laundry, holding the baby while you shower or sleep), let them! Put the “I can do it all myself” attitude on hold for this short time and get used to asking people to help you. You’ll need to do it often over the next, oh, eighteen years or so.

Face it, your hormones are on a wild roller coaster ride right now. The same hormones that conspired to get you pregnant are now working overtime adjusting to your new postpartum life. You will cry for seemingly no reason at all, you will laugh, you might be overwhelmed and maybe even a little blue…and all within a 10-minute time span. Don’t be alarmed, these are your hormones talking. They are helping to produce milk and get your body back to normal. Be kind to yourself. This will pass. Of course, if the baby blues persist, consult your doctor.

“Men are generally not very intuitive, so if you tell him specifically what you want, you are much more likely to get it”, says Greg Bishop author of Hit the Ground Crawling. Also make sure your new daddy is involved with the baby. Let him change diapers, get the baby to sleep, give a bottle, entertain, etc.

Sure, he’s not doing it the way you would (or even correctly for that matter…the diaper goes the other way and the onesie is on backwards). Let him do his own thing with the baby, this is their time to bond. All of you will be happier; more relaxed and new daddy might just surprise you and become capable with the baby so you can have some much needed alone Remember, time.whatever you do for this baby is the right choice because it’s out of love and because you’re the mommy. Keep in mind that with everyday it does get easier. Trust your instincts and be gentle with your “hormonal” self.

Oh the Drama

Ask & You Shall Receive This is not the time to hint or hope that your husband understands your wants and needs. Having a baby has not changed his oblivion to the dirty dishes in the sink or the mounds of laundry scattered throughout the house. If you need him to do something, you must ask.

Grandparents, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how important you are to your grandchild(ren). You are so much more than an occasional babysitter. You teach without it even seeming like you are, and your wisdom is soaked up better than any lecture from a parent. You may not realize just how profoundly you affect your grandchildren. To keep your connection with them alive, read on for 14 traditions you can start this year. Most of them are pretty adaptable so you can continue them as your grandchildren grow.

1. Explore your “stuff ” with them

5. Snuggle and read. Snuggle up and read some stories, no matter how old your grandchild is. Make up stories, create some and write them down in a notebook and illustrate them, too. Tell them what your child (their parent) was like at their age and some of the messes they got into. My parents love to tell my kids how I used a poison ivy leaf as a powder puff once … and paid the price!

8. Make something together.

The possibilities are endless: bake cookies, start a sewing, wood or other craft project, plant a tree or a pot of wildflowers. My husband’s grandma made wooden stick horses for all of her grandchildren, and they still have them. Now my kids play with them … 40 years later.

2. Go fishing. Boys and girls alike are always up for a short bout of fishing, either on a boat, off a dock or in a nearby pond. They not only learn how to bait a hook and cast the line, but their faces light up when they actually catch a fish. And if they don’t … well, you still get some time to find out what’s on their mind.

14. Show up. Attend as many sports, Scouts, dance and other events as you can. This can be difficult if you have many grandchildren living close who are big into activities, so just do your best. Your presence is definitely looked forward to and appreciated.

By Kerrie McLoughlin

Why have you kept what you have over the years?

7. Teach a skill. Do you crochet, build furniture, paint, cook the best chicken and noodles in the state? Could you teach your grandchild how to start a budget, how to care for cows, how to grow blackberries? Tutu (my mom) got my kids interested in rocks when she gave them some quartz crystal chunks.

space city publishing

10. Play a game. Throw a ball. You can play something your grandchild wants to play, like Candyland, or tackle something you want to teach, like checkers, chess or gin rummy. While Poppy is always good for a game of marbles on the floor, Papa Dave makes them scream by hiding and then chasing them around the yard and house.

SPACE CITY PARENT | PEARLAND PARENT | FORT BEND PARENT | KATY PARENT8 |

4 Get active. Do an activity that interests your grandchild. For instance, if you have a granddaughter who loves ballet, take her to see “The Nutcracker.” If your grandson loves trains, take him on a train ride.

9. Nature Walk Go on a nature walk or to a nearby park, zoo or nature center. If you aren’t physically fit, now is a great time to get that way by going on a short nature hike with the kids or pushing them on the merry-go-round. If you just don’t have the energy, indoor children’s museums are a great place to sit and observe while your grandchild plays.

11. Call it a night. My sons love shrimp, so my dad makes them a dinner of shrimp, potatoes and green beans and tops it off with a big bowl of sherbet while they watch a movie. Then they spend the night and wake up to eggs, hash browns, bacon and a day full of fun.

Take the kids on a tour of your attic, and special treasures throughout the house. Kids learn so much about you and about history through this tradition. Baseball cards, music that is important to you, books, photos, autographs, special toys, journals.

12. Learn something new. Take your grandchild on a trip for a great learning opportunity, and make some special memories in the process. It doesn’t need to be lengthy or costly. A day trip to a neat landmark or fun activity (see #9) would do the trick!

13. Volunteer together. My father-in-law takes my 10-year-old son to a food bank every few weeks for three hours of sorting donated food, then they go out to lunch. Head to www.VolunteerMatch.org to find all sorts of volunteer opportunities you can do with your grandchild.

6. Write each of your grandchildren a letter. You can write one when each is born, sharing your feelings about their birth and hopes for their future. You can write one later, giving advice and pointing out their strengths. Write one just for milestones or write one every year … it’s up to you. Trust me, it will be treasured.

3. Spa Day. Take a girl on a day of beauty or do your own at home. My girls love it when Grandma Mac brushes their hair because she is so patient and gentle and talks to them so lovingly while doing it. A simple session of nail painting can be very relaxing and the perfect time for a girl-to-girl chat.

Large and Heave Furniture and Appliances. 8-10 thousand victims are treated in emergency rooms annually for furniture tip-over injuries, some of these are fatal. Use angle braces or anchors to secure.

Disc Batteries. They may, if swallowed, stick in the throat or stomach, causing serious burns as the chemical leaks out.

Storage Chests. Suffocation deaths occur in these when a child or pet cannot escape. The best choice is one without a lid or with a lightweight removable lid. If a chest closes, make sure it has ventilation holes.

Window Treatments with Hanging Cords. Those manufactured before 2001 can pose a potential strangulation hazard. Replace them with today’s safer, cordless products, especially in children’s bedrooms and play areas. Antifreeze. Children or pets could drink large amounts of this sweet tasting liquid if it is left out in an open container or if spilled on your driveway. The main ingredient is extremely toxic. Windshield washer fluid is also highly toxic. It can cause instant blindness.

Hazardous Plants. Dieffenbachia and Philodendron, two common household plants, are frequently ingested and can cause very serious symptoms. A popular yard plant is the beautiful oleander. Everything about this plant is toxic, including the water in which cut flowers are placed and any smoke. Recalled Products. These are products found to be unsafe, hazardous or defective. Keep up-to-date by visiting www.Recalls.gov. “Don’t take chances when it comes to your children’s safety,” warns Debra Holtzman J.D., M.A., an internationally acclaimed safety and health expert and bestselling author of “The Safe Baby: A Do-It Yourself Guide to Home Safety”. To protect your child from unnecessary dangers, contact: Precious Baby www.preciousbabyprotectors.comProtectors281-438-4670

Latex Balloons. More children have suffocated by uninflated balloons and pieces of balloons than any other type of toy. Keep latex balloons away from children under 8 years old. Consider Mylar balloons instead.

Garage Doors. If your automatic garage door does not already have one, install a sensor such as an “electric eye”. It signals the door to reverse its motion if anything is in the way.

As parents, our children’s safety is one of our biggest concerns. The best way to prevent a serious or fatal accident is to educate yourself on risks and take precautionary measures. Below are ten common household items that can injure or kill a child or pet.

Stuffed Toys. Be aware that seams can separate and allow stuffing or plastic pellets to be released, presenting a choking hazard to young children and pets. Check also for small detachable parts, security of eyes, nose and mouth of stuffed toys.

“Research clearly demonstrates that even a few days of too-little sleep causes a part of the brain called the amygdala to go into overdrive with fear and anxiety,” says Baxter. Instead of responding to stress with worry and panicked preparation, take a warm bath then get to bed. You’ll be ready to move mountains in the morning.

AFFIRM YOUR ATTRIBUTES. List your top ten qualities. “They can be serious – like ‘I’m a great listener’ – or silly, like ‘I always call people back,’ ‘I read with my kids every night,’ or ‘My cookies sell out first at the bake sale,” says Tuma-Young. Celebrating your own unique, special skills makes you feel fabulous. BE POSITIVE. It may seem like other people have easier lives, but that’s just an illusion. Pay attention to small victories, like making a home-cooked meal that everyone in the family will eat. Celebrate improvement rather than focusing on perfection. And give yourself permission to feel disappointed when setbacks happen. Just don’t let them stop you from starting again. And again. TO SELF-CONFIDENCEBOOST

You’ve Got It, Mom! 7 TIPS

“Either accept your inadequacies, or choose to develop the trait or skill you’d like to have.” Ask yourself “What words of encouragement would I offer a friend in the same situation?” then say them to yourself. Optimistic self-talk inspires confidence.

BANISH LIMITING LANGUAGE. Telling yourself “I can’t,” “I’ll never,” or “I always,” reinforces your flaws and shortcomings, says Baxter, and can create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Overestimating your abilities will cause you to crash and burn like an American-Idol wannabe, says Lynn Kennedy Baxter, B.S.N., M.A., a licensed marriage and family therapist in Colorado Springs, Colo. And underestimating your abilities may cause you to pass up chances to stretch your skills. “Get reality checks from people you trust to give you good, honest feedback,” says Baxter. You may be holding yourself back.

GET PASSIONATE.

Fuel your confidence by investing in your own interests. Take dance classes, start a blog, or finish your college degree. “When we’re passionate about something – about anything – we become more attractive to others, and more importantly, we become more attractive to ourselves,” says certified life coach and inspirista Jennifer Tuma-Young of Edison, NJ. Do what lights your fire.

“If you feel like your life is a see-saw, perhaps you’re depending on other people for your ups and downs,” says communication consultant Sam Horn, author of What’s Holding You Back? 30 Days to Having the Courage and Confidence to Do What You Want, Meet Whom You Want, and Go Where You Want. Comparing yourself to others generates feelings of inferiority or superiority, neither of which is helpful. Be accountable to your own wishes and values.

STOP COMPARING.

REST UP.
