A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING

You’ve heard it before, a place for everything and everything in its place. Buy some cheap plastic bins and sort it all out. One mom says this has changed her life. “Even when you can’t find an inch of carpet in my daughter’s room, it only takes about 5-10 minutes to clean it all up. All Barbie’s accessories in one bin, tea party dishes in another, dress up clothes in another, etc… We have clear plastic storage boxes so we are able to store according to category and she is able to see all of her toys so they actually get played with, instead of sitting at the bottom of a traditional toy box.”

MANAGING HAND ME DOWNS

One thing kids do really well is grow. In fact, they grow so fast, it’s unusual for them to actually “wear-out” their clothes. One mom has it figured out. Mom of 2 boys, Kimberly says she has a plastic tub for every size of clothing from 18mo-4T in her second child’s closet. As the older child outgrows items, they go directly in these tubs and they are already easily accessible for when the toddler has a growth spurt! As one bin is emptied, it goes to the other end of the tubs to start collecting the next size.

THE EXCESS

Have more toys than you can count? Buy one of those “under the bed” storage containers and when your child isn’t looking, fill it up with some toys he hasn’t played with in a while and store it under your bed. Every few months or so, bring these toys out and replace them with others. This not only makes your child feel like its Christmas morning, it also cuts down on the clutter. You’ll probably also find that some of those toys weren’t missed at all and can go in the box for a garage sale, resale shop or to donate.

ROUTINE

By building a couple of regular routines in to your child’s day, he can’t help staying organized. The morning routine includes making the bed, picking up any books left out and putting the pj’s in the hamper. The evening routine includes putting away toys, putting shoes in the closet, clothes in the hamper and picking his clothes out for the next day. By giving him these simple responsibilities, you’re not only teaching him to keep his room clean, you are helping shape the person he’ll grow up to be. Your future daughter-in-law will thank you one day!

LEAD BY EXAMPLE

As with anything, we must practice what we preach. If you are unorganized, you’re going to have a harder time getting the kids organized. Start by getting rid of those clothes in the back of your closet, you know the ones, “for when I lose 10 pounds”. When you do lose that weight, reward yourself with some new clothes that are actually currently in style!
