WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING TO SPRUCE-UP YOUR KITCHEN, REMODEL YOUR BATHROOM, OR SIMPLY EXTEND YOUR LIVING SPACE TO THE OUTDOORS, EXPERTS AT J&J CARPET ONE FLOOR AND HOME HAVE EVERYTHING COVERED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM.
AFTER
Kitchen design by Rob Naghdi
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT SETS J&J CARPET ONE FLOOR AND HOME APART FROM THE REST IS THAT IT’S THE MAIN DISTRIBUTOR OF AMISH CABINETS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA.
“Inspiration is what it’s all about,” says Merritt Island native and store owner Jeff Kidd.
backsplashes and countertops, J&J can create custom kitchens and bathrooms curated to your style.
Serving Brevard County for over 30 years, J&J Carpet One offers a variety of flooring types, including waterproof luxury vinyl plank. Throughout the past several years, J&J has expanded their services and advanced into a design and renovation business. With a team of well experienced designers, and various options for cabinets,
“I wouldn’t be where I am without my amazing team,” Kidd says. “Every day I see their passion and drive to help clients create their dream living spaces.” Kidd shares that his installers are also dedicated to customer satisfaction, exhibiting pride in their workmanship. He couldn’t be more thankful for having such a talented staff. ⊲
“Kemp Custom Amish Cabinets is a one-of-a-kind cabinet company located in southern Indiana,” Kidd says. “Their finishing process is at the industry’s highest quality, using a catalyzed baked finish. What this means is that after finishing, the cabinetry goes through an oven to give the best final product available.” Kemp Cabinets offer cherry, maple, knotty alder, hickory, oak and quarter sawn oak cabinets, as well as, custom color choices and stains.
When it comes to choosing granite or quartz countertops, J&J Carpet One Floor and Home makes it a point to educate customers on the best fit for them. “Choosing granite versus quartz is a personal preference and all factors including cost, characteristics and maintenance should be considered to ensure the best product is used for the project,” Kidd explains.
Granite is natural stone mined from quarries all around the world, cut into slabs, transported, and polished. Quartz countertops are a man-made product using 95 percent natural quartz crystals which are mined, ground, and polished into small grains, then added to polymer resins, pressed, and baked in ovens producing quartz slabs in a variety of colors and designs. ⊲

A LIFE INSIDE IS
NO LIFE AT ALL
I
don’t know about you, but I love the fact that living in Florida means we don’t have to hibernate for the winter...
The great outdoors is always, well, great. This particular month of March, though, gives us that perfect blend of ideal temps and, for the outdoor-goers, endless opportunities to embrace the spring. Personally, if I could live outside, beachside, with, of course, the indoor amenities and luxuries such as plumbing and electricity, I sure would. Just ask anyone who knows me — if you aren’t sure where to find me, take a quick trip to the beach and there I’ll be. In fact, a few magazine issues ago I wrote about this very fact, that there’s something about being near the water that creates an opportunity to unwind. Remember, the whole “throw your problems out in the ocean and they come back a lot smaller” reference? Well, this month, I’m sad to say I don’t live as close to the beach as I used to for that convenient de-stress trip, but I’ve discovered something nearby that seems to fit a similar mold. Every time you turn around, the opportunities are endless to find a park or outdoor area to enjoy a little R&R time. From lakeside parks to breezy greens, the concept tends to lend the same results. There’s something to be said about our scenic outdoors making it easy to appreciate the simple things in life. Come join me in getting outside this spring and don’t forget to stop and smell the daises.

he sun is out, the air is warm, and, we know you are crushing those fitness resolutions. Here are five simple ways to boost your workout and feel energized.
▲ Eating the “good” fats: Foods like eggs, avocado, nuts and oily fish actually promote feelings of fullness throughout the day and help reduce the hormone cortisol, which is associated with stress and fat storage. Next time you go out, be sure to get the salmon!
⊲ Cardio: When it comes to toning the body, getting rid of excess fat, and showing off your hard-earned muscles, there is no substitute for a good cardio session. Running, biking, jump-training, and swimming are all fantastic ways to fire up the metabolism and burn calories. Try to get at least 30-45 minutes five days a week for best results.
⊳ Drinking coffee: Aside from the
caffeine benefits that can aid your workout, coffee increases the body’s metabolic rate by up to 13 percent.

TOP FIVE LITTLE BLACK DRESS TIPS
By Heather Motro
L
ooking to spruce up your little black dress? Here are five chic ways to help rock your outfit.
▲ Little black everything On summery days, go for a small black clutch, black pumps or sandals, and a floppy black hat. In the winter, keep the clutch, ditch the hat, and exchange the sandals for black boots. Black tights may work for any season, but leave out one of the other accessories or the outfit will be too dark.
Glamorous in gold ⊲ Wear your dress with a gold chain belt, gold bangles, and hoop earrings. Incorporate the color into your makeup with shimmery gold eyeshadow and highlight. Pair this look with nude-color heels.
20 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
▲ Playful pop
▲ Simple and sparkly A silver or white- jeweled choker or short necklace and matching medium-length earrings draw eyes without screaming for attention. Twist your hair into a high bun to make the outfit more sophisticated.
Match your black dress with a bright-colored clutch or handbag and white wedges or tennis shoes — yes, tennis shoes. Top off the look with a print jacket or coat.
▲ Classic One word: pearls. Pair your little black dress with a pearl necklace, pearl earrings, and black flats or high heels. ◆

R
ecently, I read the statement, “Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym.” It made perfect sense to me; does it to you?
Now I know this is going to be a bit of counter thinking, especially this time of year when people have been practicing their New Year resolution of working out more. And I’m not discounting the importance of exercise, but I am saying what and how you eat are way more important.
you’re very frustrated. The reason for this is that it doesn’t matter how much you exercise — if you’re not eating properly, you won’t lose or maintain your weight.
I don’t believe in diets; we all know they don’t work. What does work is a lifestyle.
Doesn’t matter the name, the premise is all the same. You should have an eating habit that includes lean proteins, veggies and fruits eaten in the right proportions. Eliminate all processed foods and any food that promotes inflammation. Sugar is toxic; alcohol is a deal breaker.
Look around the gym or the tennis courts next time you’re there. Do you see people who exercise regularly who never seem to lose any weight? Are you one of those people? If you are, then
Tips that work! ⊲
BASICALLY, ALL THE “DIETS” OUT THERE PROMOTE THE SAME THING.
Timing
EAT YOUR LAST MEAL OF THE DAY EARLY.
I like to eat no later than 7 p.m. Sometimes that fluctuates, but basically from the last bite I eat at night to the first bite the next morning, I fast 12 hours. I don’t do any of those crazy daytime fasts, liquid diets or cleansings; I eat real food. And by the way, if you’re eating properly, those faddy cleansings are unnecessary. 22 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

Having that glass of wine before bed sounds soothing, and it may put you to sleep, but you’re not sleeping properly or at all through the night. That’s because all alcoholic beverages contain sugar or carbs, so it metabolizes, or tries to, a few hours after consumption, disrupting sleep. Not sleeping properly is a main culprit in weight gain. So, if you just have to have that glass, drink it early.

verlooking the Indian River is the second floor of Ryan’s Pizza, a popular restaurant located on the eastern edge of Cocoa Village. Ryan’s boasts a friendly and attentive staff, a full bar with a vast beer selection, delicious pizza with ample portion sizes, and multiple high-definition televisions showing any sports one could want.
The View ⊲ The crowning jewel of the upper deck is the perfect view of a blue Indian River with Merritt Island just on the other end. Sailboats breezily go by and occasionally dolphins can be sighted coming to the surface. Palm trees gently sway by the shore where people play volleyball or go fishing just off of Riverfront Park. 24 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
Ryan’s is just a short walk away from Cocoa Village’s many shops, breweries, and historic buildings, making it a popular location for families and friends to congregate after a day spent shopping in the village. SPRING HOME FASHION
WHAT’S TRENDING By Heather Motro
A
s spring begins to bloom around us, it's time to shed the jeans and jackets in favor of lighter clothes. For many of us, that means updating ourselves on the latest trends of the fashion world. The same styles that are sweeping the catwalk also have the ability to modernize our interior design. Once you finish your spring cleaning, refresh your home with these four fashion trends.
▲ Earth tones: Rusty yellow, deep red and forest green are the colors to
wear this year, and they're also the colors for décor. Rather than making these vibrant tones the main color of a room, use them for accent colors, such as in upholstery or curtains. Opt for a neutral grey as the main color of the room.
⊳ Graphics: Graphic tees are a playful way to bring attention to an outfit and show the world who you are at the same time — your favorite rock band, Marvel superhero or cheesy saying. Do it yourself in your home by making pagesized glossy prints of your favorite photos or quotes and hanging them in your own mini-gallery on the wall in a living room, bedroom or hallway. Take it to the next level by coordinating the colors of the images. Bonus points if you use the previously mentioned earth tones. 26 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
▲ Floral design: Blouses, tank tops and sundresses with simple neutral backgrounds and colorful, intricate flower patterns are a closet staple for the warm, sunny seasons (and let's face it, in Florida, that's all the time). The same patterns are trending in home accessories like throw pillows and throw rugs. If you're worried that floral print will look too busy in your home, try a black and white floral design. Or, keep small bouquets of flowers in vases or jars around your home for a touch of natural elegance.
▲ Get cozy: Comfort and fashion are no longer mutually exclusive — think sweatpants, leggings and oversized sweaters. Similarly, cozy interior design is in, and it's called hygge, the Danish concept of living in comfort. Bring hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) into your home with candles, fairy lights and chunky-knit blankets. ABOVE ALL, CONFIDENCE IS IN. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT BY APPLYING YOUR OWN BOLD STYLE TO YOUR HOME. ◆

WHEN A CRUISE
ISN’T AN OPTION By Sherry Laskin
I
f you suddenly crave a few hours on the water, want something different to do, or search for an activity to entertain out-of-town guests, the Space Coast has a lot of options.
Kayaking GET DOWN TO ALMOST WATER LEVEL AND JOIN ONE OF BREVARD’S KAYAK TOURS. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A THRILL-SEEKER TO SETTLE INTO A TWO-PERSON KAYAK. Everyone with a television set has probably seen a commercial for Brevard Zoo’s Treetop Trek. But did you know that the zoo also offers kayak tours? It’s the only zoo in the U.S. that has guided kayak tours that envelop animal exhibits.
Another option for getting up close and nearly personal with the water is to try a Cocoa Beach Kayak tour. This definitely would be a more serene paddle than at the zoo, but of course you won’t see giraffes! Cocoa Beach Kayak Tours will take you out into the Indian River Lagoon, the most biodiverse estuary in North America. Your tour winds through the Thousand Islands and navigates narrow canals. Chances are you or your guide will spot Florida manatees, bottlenose dolphins and dozens of birds.
⊲ Be Sure to Bring: sun hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray and towels. 28 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
River Tours IF SOMETHING A LITTLE TAMER IS APPEALING, TRY ONE OF BREVARD’S OLDFASHIONED RIVER TOURS.
Airboats FOR A LITTLE MORE ADVENTURE ON THE WATER, ZOOM THROUGH THE MARSHES AND SWAMPS ON AN AIRBOAT RIDE. Head over to Airboat Rides of Melbourne or Twister Airboat Rides and discover parts of the Space Coast that just cannot be seen unless you’re on an airboat. Cruise through the headwaters of the St. Johns River while your captain shares his knowledge about the area’s alligators, migratory birds and local flora.
Good Natured River Tours next to Grills on US 1, or Dolfun Tours near the Eau Gallie Causeway are great options for those seeking a gentle day on the water. You’ll cruise aboard a covered pontoon or tour boat as your guide heads over to Merritt Island’s Dragon Point
and its million-dollar mansions. Slowly travel along the Indian and Banana River lagoons in search of dolphins, manatees and an assortment of wildlife. The next time you long to be at sea but an ocean cruise is out of the question, the Space Coast has enough water activities to satisfy any bored landlubber. ◆

upfront DO IT YOURSELF
SUCCULENT
PALLET WALL By Casey Wilkerson
What you’ll need: ☐ Wooden pallet ☐ Scissors ☐ Landscaping fabric ☐ Staple gun ☐ Commercially mixed soil for succulents
S
ucculents are a great introto-gardening endeavor. They only require watering once the soil is completely dry, approximately once a week, and the succulents I keep on my windowsill have weathered my forgetfulness for weeks at a time. They are also able to thrive in most conditions, making them a great candidate for a spot in your wall garden. If you are just beginning your plant journey, look no further for an easy, do-it-yourself way to get started.
Why Succulents? Succulents have benefits outside being able to withstand a black thumb. Plants produce oxygen during photosynthesis, but most respire carbon dioxide when the sun isn’t out. Succulents, however, produce oxygen throughout the night and cleanse the air of volatile organic compounds like formaldehyde. 30 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
Start Building! The landscaping fabric will be used to fill in the open sections of the pallet. Place the fabric over a section and push it in so that there is enough slack. Cut this section accordingly and repeat with each part of your garden (or use your first cut as a template). Hold the fabric down, ensure that there is enough fabric to fill the section, and use the staple gun to secure its placement. Cut away the excess, pack your soil into the wells, and get to planting!
Rockledge Gardens recommends that a commercially mixed soil is used to allow the water to drain properly for your succulents. The soil should be completely dried out before the plant is watered again, and keep in mind that the most common problem is overwatering. Though this project was created with succulents in mind, you could opt for the herbs you normally buy at the grocery store. I grow basil and rosemary in my kitchen, and succulents in my bedroom. Happy planting! â—†

W
ith signature salads providing healthier options for patrons and specialty sandwiches unlike any others in the area, EATz provides a unique take on the food one might find at a local eatery. EATz is the creation of owners Domenic and Melody Camarra, who originally started the business out of their passion for fresh, healthy food. “We like to portray it as something good to eat, not just something that looks good,” Melody said. “We don’t use any oils or sprays, so it’s healthier for you. Everything we serve is always served with love, so that makes it even better.” In addition to the fresh ingredients used, EATz also takes pride in its staff. The restaurant is a true family business. Domenic and Melody’s son and daughter work there while going to Eastern Florida State College, and even the employees who are not blood-related feel like family. There is a sense of pride in what they do, crafting each meal to be an outstanding culinary experience. The restaurant is the natural progression of Domenic’s love for cooking. Initially starting out as a dishwasher, he studied the chefs in the kitchen and eventually came to the decision that cooking was something he wanted to do. He went to culinary school, where he earned his degree and started to cook at a number of places before opening EATz.
“WHAT I LOVE THE MOST ABOUT COOKING IS HAVING THE ABILITY TO CREATE A MEAL FOR A CUSTOMER AND HAVING THAT FOOD PUT A SMILE ON HIS OR HER FACE,” DOMENIC SAID. “AT THE END OF THE DAY, THAT’S WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY.” 34 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
An Unconventional Menu While EATz provides healthier, non-processed options, the cooking is done in a fun, unconventional way. The restaurant serves its meals in large portions, providing subs that fill a plate or a take-home box. The bountiful salads can provide a customer with more than one meal. The combination of ingredients within the dishes are also unorthodox, created through trial and error and by getting feedback from patrons. The tuna melt contains bacon, putting a different spin on a traditional sandwich. The Greek salad bucks the trend of the typical fetaolive-onion mix by adding salami, ham and potato salad. While new customers may be skeptical of the mix, they are won over shortly after tasting it. “We get people that will ask, ‘Really, potato salad?’” Melody said. “And I’ll tell them, ‘Just trust me; mix it all around, and try it.’ They’ll eat it and say how good it was.” If you are a fan of various types of foods, EATz has something for you. When asked about some menu favorites, Melody mentioned the Maryann’s Melt, a curry chicken salad that contains sweet pickles, American cheese, lettuce and tomato on rye, as well as the Annie’s Apple, which contains thin green apple slices, cream
cheese, raisins, mozzarella and lettuce on wheat. EATz also specializes in desserts, creating sweets ranging from cheesecakes to a sumptuous Reese’s cake.
Staying Focused on Success In the early 2000s, EATz resided in downtown Melbourne before hurricanes in 2004 caused structural damage, forcing it to shut down. Ten years later, the Camarras returned, moving their business to the Suntree area and its growing residential and commercial population. The location has also become a popular lunch spot for many of the surrounding businesses. Through it all, the family remains driven to provide the best value and service to their customers, all inspired by the passion they have for food.
“WE JUST STAY FOCUSED,” MELODY SAID. “WE CAN’T LET ALL THESE OTHER DISTRACTIONS COME INTO PLAY; WE JUST FOCUS ON WHAT WE DO. I THINK CONSISTENCY IS THE MAIN CORE OF MAKING A BUSINESS WORK. WE REALLY WORK HARD ON HAVING A GOOD STAFF AND TEAM BEHIND US.” ◆ M A RCH 2019 : 35

The collective expertise of HBCA members is on public display (March 16-24) during the associationsponsored Parade of Homes™. But in reality, HBCA members are working each and every day to help individuals and families realize the dream of home ownership. HBCA strives to be a strong community partner, both in terms of its huge positive impact on the local economy and the key role it plays in helping people make what most likely will be the biggest investment of their life. With its diverse and dynamic membership, HBCA is wellequipped to meet the growing demand for housing in Brevard. Member builders run the gamut from large custom homes, to affordable homes for first-time buyers, to professional remodelers who can modernize existing spaces into exciting new places.
Behind every successful builder or remodeler is a team of talented professionals, sometimes on the staff, but most often as independent trades professionals in such fields as electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, or specialized companies in real estate brokerage, building supply, financing, and insurance, to name just a few. Collectively and individually, HBCA members are on the cutting edge of industry trends and technology that lead to better living for housing consumers. In addition to the daily hands-on work of its members to create housing opportunities, HBCA teams with its affiliated Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to advocate for local, state and federal policies that help make housing more attainable and affordable. Most often that effort is focused on private property rights
HBCA believes that its future success depends in great part on the ability to attract young people into careers in the construction fields, and support of the Future Builders of America and the Brevard Internships In Construction Knowledge (BRICK) programs that provide guidance for high school students with an interest in the construction industry. Looking ahead, HBCA hopes to lock arms with all the community stakeholders who share the goal of making housing available to our existing and new residents. Brevard County can be proud that its homeownership rate of 72.3 percent is well above the national average (64.2), and that the average monthly housing cost with a mortgage ($1,281) and the average monthly rent ($971) compare favorably to the higher-cost urban areas around the state. But make no mistake. With an 8.4 percent population growth rate since 2010, and a robust economy buoyed by rapid expansion in the aerospace, health care, manufacturing, and information technology sectors, Brevard housing demand is strong today and destined to grow. There is work to be done. And the Home Builders & Contractors Association of Brevard is up for the challenge.

PRODUCTS With A Cause By Mallorie Ann Ingram
Jason Ellington
OVER THE YEARS, ELLINGTON AIR CONDITIONING AND HEAT
has made a point to not only serve the community by providing a well-needed product in a difficult climate, but also give back to charitable groups such as The Children’s Hunger Project. One of the biggest concerns children face is hunger and this particular project addresses this problem. Ellington’s Scrap With a Gift Wrap tackles this issue simply by recycling.
“WE TAKE EVERY UNIT THAT WE REPLACE AND SCRAP THE OLD ONE AND TAKE ALL THE PROCEEDS TO SUPPORT THE CHILDREN’S HUNGER PROJECT,” said CEO Jason Ellington. 26 : 20 1 9 HBC A P a ra d e o f H o m es ™
“The more units we replace, the more we are supporting this organization, which is what we want.” Ellington Air Conditioning and Heat offers services ranging from installation and repairs to duct and vent cleaning, all provided by a team of talented individuals dedicated to providing exceptional service. Some of the products in the company’s inventory include Nexia Home Intelligence, Trane, Mitsubishi Cooling & Heating. Free estimates and financing are also available. “We’re well known for our premium services, but we also recognize that’s not for everyone,” Ellington said. “We’ve been able to broaden our selection to be more appealing with our customers.”
Ellington shares that the company’s niche in the market has always been to feature premium product lines with premium installation, but he quickly realized their services needed to be more open minded.
KNOWLEDGE | EXPERIENCE | INTEGRITY
“We don’t have just the Macy’s offerings, we have the Target ones too,” he explained.
“WE STRIVE TO NOT ONLY GIVE OUR CUSTOMERS A 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEED EXPERIENCE BUT ALSO HELP THE COMMUNITY BY GIVING BACK TO THOSE IN NEED WITH OUR DIFFERENT PROGRAMS,” ELLINGTON SHARES. “THAT’S WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO US.” ◆

LUXURIOUS CUSTOM-BUILT HOMES By Mallorie Ann Ingram
LIFESTYLE HOMES | ST. MARTIN
VALENCIA IS THE NEWEST NEIGHBORHOOD TO EMERGE IN VIERA’S ADDISON VILLAGE AND WITH IT COMES A STRONG RELATIONSHIP OF LONGEVITY BETWEEN TWO OF THE AREA’S WELL-KNOWN BUILDERS: JOYAL HOMES AND LIFESTYLE HOMES. This upscale, gated community features tile roof structures and paver driveways with breathtaking curb appeal, not to mention waterfront or water view properties for each home.
JOYAL HOMES | BELLA VUE

“We’re hoping to bring these exciting developments out to the community during the Parade of Homes™ event and show off our model homes,” says Joyal Homes’ CEO Paul Joyal.
LIFESTYLE HOMES ST. MARTIN Both builders are excited about this showcase community opportunity at the Parade of Homes™ event, presented by the Home Builders & Contractors Association of Brevard, as it will give people an idea of how well Brevard is flourishing in this industry. Both Joyal Homes and LifeStyle Homes have had a successful journey in the area for decades and are family run companies. “We have watched and participated in Viera’s growth over time and take pride in being a preferred builder in this town,” says Karen Kicinski with LifeStyle Homes. “We are entering 2019 with a good start to Valencia, which is already poised to be a sought-after Viera community.” Kicinski shares that numerous luxury homes are already under construction; however, many desirable home sites still remain up for grabs.
THE BIG FOCUS WITH BOTH BUILDERS IS TO CREATE A CUSTOM-BUILT MASTERPIECE. “We find that a lot of people are moving away from the Mediterranean look and feel and leaning toward a more British West Indies style,” Joyal says. “All of our homes are fully custom built. Whatever the customer would like in their home is what they will get in their home. We also are building ocean and riverfront properties with this same style and concept.” LifeStyle Homes focuses heavily on high performance, energy-saving homebuilding and every home is guaranteed to be 40 percent more efficient than comparable homes using their LifeStyle SunSmart building products and practices. In Valencia, their solar homes are
built with unique roof-integrated solar tiles that blend right into the home’s rooftop. LifeStyle’s model home in Valencia – the LifeStyle St. Martin –sits at 4,642 square feet and is decked out from head to toe with unique architectural and design elements, as well as a stunning pool and summer kitchen. Those visiting Addison Village will find a variety of amenities to enjoy, as well as the convenience of retail and restaurants within walking distance.
THE ADDISON VILLAGE CLUB AMENITY FEATURES A STATE-OFTHE-ART CLUBHOUSE, MULTIPLE RESORT-STYLE POOLS, TENNIS COURTS, PICKLEBALL COURTS, BOCCE-BALL COURT, AND CROQUET LAWN. ◆

THE COMMODORE
By Eric Wright
THE NEXT FCYC COMMODORE
and a Man of Many Hats The accomplished are usually individuals who wear many hats, often at the same time and certainly in the course of a career. The hats that Jon Williams has literally worn, put him in an elite and unique group. How many can say their first job out of college was as an Air Force pilot, eventually flying F-4 Phantoms in aerial combat during the Vietnam War? Williams actually flew over 165 combat missions and still treasures the relationships forged in that crucible few of us can even imagine. Then he successfully transitioned to follow the evolution of commercial aviation over the next few decades, as air travel became the link that connected the world. The next peaked hat Williams will don is as the commodore of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC). Only a handful of individuals from the Eau Gallie Yacht Club (EGYC) have led this association of 36 non-profit yacht clubs around the state, but it seems like an ideal fit for Williams, known for his gracious hospitality and enthusiastic engagement. The yacht club became a social nexus for him and his wife, Edythe (Edy), when they both retired from the airline industry to their home on Tortoise Island.

THE COMMODORE
From Hostile to Friendly Skies Williams and his wife are native Floridians from Lakeland and Jacksonville respectively, which proved to be a factor in drawing them back to this area. From Lakeland, Williams went to the Citadel, graduating in 1963 as an Air Force officer, and then trained as a pilot. Afterwards, Williams became part of that select group chosen to be fighter pilots. Following his initial training in the F-4, the iconic jet from the early 1960s that, at the time, was the fastest, highest flying and longest-range fighter in the world, he was assigned to the first operational F-4 squadron out of Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle. “A number of our pilots were very experienced, and I was fortunate to be under their wing, so to speak. I went there in ‘65 and we didn’t deploy to Southeast Asia until ‘67, so I had over two years in the airplane before facing actual combat. Many who came after me were not so fortunate,” Williams said. Based in northern Thailand, most of his missions were over North Vietnam. After Vietnam, Williams was assigned to MacDill Air Force Base, south of Tampa, as an instructor. He recalled, “I really loved Air Force and considered it as a career, but I would have been back in Southeast Asia and I knew where that could lead.” So, he transitioned to be an airline pilot for National Airlines, the Miami-based carrier, where he met Edy.
The Airbus Guy In 1981, after over a decade with National, they moved to Pan American when the airline was bought out. A natural instructor, Williams became a “training captain” in an era when most of the final ratings for pilots had to be completed in an actual aircraft in flight. Pan Am then sent him to Toulouse, France in 1985, the home of Airbus, where Williams trained Pan Am pilots and did the acceptance, or test flights, on new Airbus planes. He developed a reputation as “the Airbus guy,” so when Delta bought the routes, the airplanes and the pilots from Pan Am, Williams assumed a new role. “I had Air Force buddies at Delta who told them, ‘You need to talk to Jon Williams about training on the Airbus,’ and sure enough, they made me a systems manager of training and operations of the Airbus.” Delta eventually moved completely to Boeing aircraft and Williams then transitioned to be a captain of a 727. He eventually became the chief pilot of international operations for Delta, based in Atlanta. “We knew we wanted to come back to Florida when I retired. The Space Coast had everything we were looking for,” Williams said.

THE COMMODORE
Jon and Edy Williams
Commodore of the Council “During my career,” Williams recalls, “I seemed to be in the right place at the right time,” a notion he still seems to have as he stares out his sliding glass doors onto the waterfront. Having been a member of the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami and being enthusiastic boaters, joining the Eau Gallie Yacht Club was a natural step for Williams and his wife. Then a close friend, whose career Williams had paralleled, asked him about being involved in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs. The council represents the 36 clubs around the state, with the common goal of promoting marine education, unified standards for the clubs, as well as supporting causes that impact boating and waterfront communities, like the health of the Indian River Lagoon. After serving a number of key positions within the organization, he was elected to be the commodore, the organization’s highest post. “Jon has the qualities of a good leader, being open-minded and continuing to learn and grow through life. These skills will make him a great commodore! He wants to create awareness of the FCYC within the EGYC membership and the state of Florida,” commented P. Michael Goldstein, a club member who is coordinating the installation event. “The club is a vital place of connection for the community, but we also sponsor activities that impact the area,” Williams noted. Then he spoke glowingly of a youth sailing program he helped launch in conjunction with the Melbourne Yacht Club, which is reviving competitive sailing in the area.
“We knew we wanted to come back to Florida when I retired. The Space Coast had everything we were looking for.” — Jon WIlliams
Williams realizes the pace of change for an organization, like the council, may be slow. However, he is enthusiastic about how he can contribute when he puts on this newest hat to what they can accomplish in the next year and for future generations.

LEGACY
The Eau Gallie Yacht Club
Ideally situated on the Banana River, across from the southern tip of Merritt Island is one of South Brevard’s rarest gems, the Eau Gallie Yacht Club, in Indian Harbor Beach. Adjacent to the Intra-Coastal Waterway, for boaters, it is positioned almost at the half-way point between Miami and Jacksonville. Thus, the Club has been a destination for Brevard residents and yachters for over a century. Continually evolving, the Club has grown to include members from all walks of life and business - from area founders, astronauts and civic leaders, to successful CEO’s and trail blazing entrepreneurs. The Space Coast is a special place, where a vibrant and diverse economy, blends with an unrivaled lifestyle. The Eau Gallie Yacht Club is one of the places where that convergence takes place. The Club’s lounge, dining, banquet rooms and Harbor Grill overlook the private marina, which for generations has been the perfect setting for fine dining, outdoor activities, parties, special events and business gatherings.

The Eau Gallie Yacht Club
Top: Past Commodores
The Legacy, The Influence, The Growth Celebrating over a century of history and tradition in Brevard, the Eau Gallie Yacht Club has become a part of the region's ongoing and ever-changing legacy. Yet, it still harbors traditional values representing honor, relationship, success, respect, family and community. Founded in 1907 by a group of prominent citizens, the Club chose George F. Patterson as the first Commodore. Some members today are descendants of the original founders and quite a number are part of families who have been members for three generations. The first clubhouse was built on the Eau Gallie River and completed in 1912, at a cost of $3000. The initiation fee at that time was $10 with $5 in annual dues, a lifetime membership was $100. In 1959 the members voted to seek a more suitable location for the Club’s anticipated growth and expansion. When the old clubhouse was sold, the Gleason family generously donated the picturesque three acres that since 1961 when the new Club opened, has been its home. The Gleason family is still represented at the Club, with Jane Carey Gleason currently serving on the Board of Governors. M ARCH

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT SETS J&J CARPET ONE FLOOR AND HOME APART FROM THE REST IS THAT IT’S THE MAIN DISTRIBUTOR OF AMISH CABINETS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA.
⊲ M A RCH 2019 : 107

Changing with the Times Barbara Schluraff
is Reimagining Real Estate By Eric Wright
Barbara Schluraff and Chenay Strum
It was the premise of the Academy Award winning film Jerry McGuire:
Is there a better way to do our business?
It is also what taxi companies and Sears Roebuck, who invented the catalogue industry, never asked. Therefore, they stood flabbergasted as Uber and Amazon hit like an asteroid extinction event on their market share. ⊲ MARCH 2019
PERHAPS, IT IS BECAUSE BARBARA SCHLURAFF HASN’T SPENT HER ENTIRE CAREER IN REAL ESTATE THAT CAUSED HER TO LOOK AT THE INDUSTRY DIFFERENTLY. As Schluraff reinvented her professional self, she also embarked on a quest to change the paradigm of how agents and brokers, along with the buying and selling public, relate to each other and work together at her Century 21 Ocean agency. SPACE COAST B US INE S S
“Our industry has one of the highest rates of people leaving the business, as well as high agent turnover,” Schluraff said. She went on to explain it is a combination of increased pressure to lower commission rates, combined with the fact that, as Schluraff put it, “Agents prize their ‘independent’ status, but at what cost?” “In today’s market,” she said, “it is like the agent is the head coach, the defensive coordinator, the offensive coordinator, the o-line and d-line coach, as well as being the quarterback and wide receiver. They don’t have a team, where everyone focuses on their specialty and everyone is able to enjoy the results of exponentially greater capacity.”
Happy Agents, Happy Clients
For Schluraff it came down to the ageold premise, if your people are happy, then they will work to make their clients happy. “I love the real estate business,” she shared, “but I observed that to be effective and successful you had to be on all the time, there was no work-life balance, which simply isn’t sustainable.” Like in most industries, the internet has been a positive disruptor in real estate. However, it has also made the responsibilities of individual agents more complicated. They not only have to service their buyers and sellers, often they
also must launch and maintain numerous social media sites, as well as specialize in market comparisons and understand all the nuances of the transactions. Schluraff thought specialization and a team approach was a more logical and effective way to run a brokerage. From the beginning of this journey, Chenay Strum, Century 21 Ocean’s operations director, has been Schluraff ’s strongest ally and strategic partner. She observed, “Barbara is passionate about her people succeeding and that doesn’t just translate into closing more business, it is being successful in their lives.” Strum is the agency’s point person on inbound and outbound internet marketing and social media. She is also a real estate outsider, with a background in human resources in the resort and retail industry. “Barbara is so much more than just a ‘boss,’” Strum said, “She's someone I trust. She's resilient. She's got grit. But personally, she empowers me and lets me run with my crazy ideas that push us to live outside the typical real estate box.”
living approach she enjoyed and knew others were searching for. It also was a great place to raise her two, now grown, children. She transitioned from a homeschooling mom to lending to real estate and found her fit.
Therefore, just like people check Yelp to evaluate restaurants or a bed and breakfast, more and more customers are checking not just a company’s listings, but other real estate client’s reviews, before deciding on a broker or agent.
The Client Experience
“I took a call from a client who was selling an oceanfront condominium,” Schluraff shared. “He was in his mid30s and when I asked if he wanted to meet with me and discuss our services, he said, ‘No, I’ve researched you online and you’re who I want to work with.’ It sort of shocked me, but then I realized that is what Chenay and other members of our team are there to do.”
“Ultimately, it is the client experience that will differentiate us,” she said. “If we have a team that all share their strengths, the clients will see the distinction.” Research has demonstrated that though people shop the market on the web, they still look for a real estate professional to guide them through the transaction.
UNLIKE THE CAR BUSINESS, WHERE PEOPLE WANT TO AVOID SALES PEOPLE, IN REAL ESTATE THEY LOOK FOR A PERSON THEY CAN TRUST.
With the variety of choices customers now have, there has been a flip/flop in the supply/demand model, putting the power in consumers’ hands. Therefore, discovering what they want and assisting them in a way they can’t find anywhere else, is the recipe Schluraff is serving and training her team to deliver. ◆
A Road Less Traveled
Schluraff started studying innovative brokerages around the country and even went to California to learn from a leading agency that is pushing the creative envelope. Within her agency, she used tools like DISC to align people with their strengths, instead of everyone being a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none. In turn, this freed all of them, particularly agents, to do what they do best. An out-of-the-box approach seems to come naturally to this Florida native. After graduating from FSU, Schluraff headed to Colorado “to be a ski bum,” but also got involved in organic produce. Which, when she started longing for a warmer climate, took her to Hawaii. “I really didn’t know what I was going to do when I got out there, but I had learned to live simply,” she said. Coming back to Florida, the Space Coast offered the lifestyle and opportunities she was looking for. An avid surfer, lover of wildlife and water activities, the area provided the healthy, coastal

WHILE ASAP PEST SOLUTIONS AIMS TO WORK QUICKLY, IT ALSO SPENDS PLENTY OF TIME BUILDING COMMUNITY. By Mike Candelaria
ASK SHELLEY KUHN IF SHE HAS SEEN CHANGES IN HER INDUSTRY AND SHE WON’T HESITATE TO RESPOND. Kuhn began in the pest control industry in April 1989, spraying baseboards with harsh chemicals. Now such treatments are friendly — for the environment, children and pets. The term is “environmentally conscious pest control services.” SPACE COAST B US INE S S
Also, Kuhn will say that the region has grown by leaps and bounds, with noticeable expansion everywhere from Kennedy Space Center to all the way along Interstate 95.
“Really, the fabric hasn’t changed much, although there has been so much growth,” Kuhn noted. “Palm Bay is a very warm community, close-knit.”
One thing, however, hasn’t changed much over the years, according to Kuhn: the nature of Palm Bay and surrounding areas. She describes it as being both comforting and hospitable. And for the certified operator of ASAP Pest Solutions Inc., locally-owned and -operated since 2013, that is just fine.
It’s the type of setting that bodes well for business, and ASAP Pest Solutions has enjoyed success. “Everyone has to have pest control. If they don’t, then they’re living with bugs,” she says, adding that “pest control is essential and not a luxury.” Her approach is, “How can I help?”

How Can I Help
Notably, as an example of service, along with free estimates and customized solutions, the company can provide prepurchase and pre-refinance pest inspections accompanied by official paperwork such as the FDACS-13645 Florida State and NPMA-33 HUD forms. A copy of the inspection report is promised to the closing company and lending institution the same day as the inspection. As for the pests, they encompass everything from ants and roaches to rats and bats. For good measure, there’s a free lawn and ornamental evaluation, too. Yet, mostly, the company’s commitment to the community tells a story beyond business. Kuhn serves on the board of the Palm Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, while senior staffer Debbie Lloyd-Lee co-chairs the chamber’s ambassador efforts and attends “about 95 percent” of the chamber’s events, according to Kuhn. “Anytime they [chamber leaders] ask, we’re there to help,” Kuhn noted. Kuhn believes the commitment is good business, for sure, but also the neighborly thing to do.

UNCOMMON BOTTOM LINE By Mike Candelaria
FOR THE PAST 60 YEARS,
Berman Hopkins Wright & LaHam CPAs and Associates has established a reputation of as one of the largest independently owned CPA firms in Central Florida. With offices in Melbourne, Titusville and Orlando, there is a diverse client base that ranges from manufacturing/construction, high tech/software and the agricultural industry to corporate pension plans, government entities and private individuals. Across all, Berman Hopkins works closely with them, focusing on both potential and prosperity. Yet, the firm’s biggest contributions to the region might come from efforts that have nothing to do with their clients’ bottom lines. Instead, it’s all about community contributions stemming from the firm’s overarching approach. Phillip Hayes, Berman Hopkins’ managing partner, calls it “culture.” “It’s the culture of the firm,” said Hayes, who is in his 19th year at the firm and is homegrown from Eau Gallie. “If your culture is compelling for people to support one another and support the community, it provides a place where people are proud to work and feel connected to each other. That’s always been a big part of our philosophy. … I think it’s a really important part of how we do business.”

Hayes is the immediate past board chairman for the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast. In addition, the corporate culture is enhanced through the firm’s philosophy of promotion from within, where talented staffers are given the opportunity to become partners in the firm. Not coincidentally, Berman Hopkins Wright & LaHam CPAs and Associates was named the Melbourne Chamber’s 2018 Business of the Year — by virtue of innovative business strategies as well as community engagement.
“WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO GIVE BACK AND TO BE THINKING ABOUT YOUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY, NOT JUST ONE PART OF THE COMMUNITY THAT MIGHT BE MORE SELF-SERVING,” Hayes concluded, also pointing to Titusville and Orlando. “We believe our firm has a social responsibility to the communities we live and work in, and makes significant efforts to support them.” ◆

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP Tawny Brown
How Soul-Searching and Holistic Health Inspired Island Girl Natural Beauty By Carrie Stevenson
WHEN ISLAND GIRL NATURAL BEAUTY FOUNDER TAWNY BROWN WAS LAID OFF FROM THE CORPORATION WHERE SHE HAD WORKED FOR NEARLY 25 YEARS, IT STUNG. “It was unfortunate news, to say the least, and I had to do a little bit of soul-searching,” the California native says. “But one day I brought some skin care and beauty products to a local health event, and they were a pretty big hit. I’d been making natural products for myself and friends and family for years, but never sold them. After that experience, though, I started to really look at it as a business.” And she hasn’t looked back. SPACE COAST B US INE S S
After starting the business nearly three years ago, Brown partnered with a local massage therapist, Shacara Wynn, to open a location in May 2018 in the Cocoa Village El Charro Plaza selling a limited array of products and scheduling massages by appointment only. But Island Girl Natural Beauty quickly expanded and needed a larger, second home. So, at the end of October 2018, the flagship Island Girl Natural Beauty store opened in Merritt Square Mall. “We sell natural and organic bath, spa and skin care products, including a huge array of handmade soaps, whipped body butter, salt scrubs, and essential oils,” Brown says. The store often hosts pop up spa parties, “Wine and Wash” hair care parties, trunk shows, and the store also carries jewelry made by local artisans, accessories, gift baskets, Turkish towels and blankets, and clothing.

A Personal Touch
For Brown, the products are personal. “I’ve been making these natural products since I was very young, because I have a history of eczema and very sensitive, dry skin,” she explains. “So I figured out how to create natural and nourishing products for myself, and then, when my grandson struggled with eczema as well, I worked on purifying formulas even further. All of our products include unscented options, and what’s great about making our own line is that we can customize products to suit customers’ individual needs and preferences. I did this for my family first, and always enjoyed giving products and even candles as gifts. So it’s really a passion for me, as well as my business.” As a first-time retail entrepreneur, Brown has also found a lot of support in the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce. “It’s like you become a family,” she says. “It’s nice to connect with other small business owners, meet new people, and get out of your comfort zone. It’s so important to be actively involved in our local business community.” Brown took the initiative to host a “Coastal Christmas” event at the Merritt Square Mall store showcasing their product lines, supporting other small businesses, local non-profit agencies, and honoring the state champion Merritt Island High School volleyball team.
“THE MANAGEMENT AT MERRITT SQUARE MALL HAS BEEN PROACTIVE ABOUT REVIVING THE ATMOSPHERE AND GETTING MORE ENERGY FLOWING THROUGH THE SPACE THERE,” SHE SAYS. “I’M IN SUPPORT OF THAT. SO ISLAND GIRL NATURAL BEAUTY WILL HAVE SOME WONDERFUL UPCOMING EVENTS AT THE MALL.” ◆

FOR DAWN ACKLIN, THE OWNER OF FLORAL C R E AT I O N S BY DAW N IN TITUSVILLE, IT WAS A CHILDHOOD DREAM TO OWN A FLOWER SHOP. “Before I opened the store, I did a lot of silk work, decorating model homes and attending home shows,” she says. “But when I was a little girl, a family friend was a florist and we would help her during the holidays. It was always something I wanted to do — to add warmth to homes and help people decorate.” And for two decades now, she has spread that love of beauty throughout Brevard county. Floral Creations by Dawn is celebrating its 20-year anniversary in 2019. The shop’s beautiful fresh flowers are a cornerstone of the business, but Floral Creations by Dawn has also provided holiday decorating services for the past 17 years to individual households as well as major local businesses and organizations,
including Parrish Medical Center. And outside of the holiday season, Floral Creations by Dawn helps homeowners and businesses dive into organizing their homes or offices as well. “Many decorators can make a space beautiful, and I do,” Acklin explains. “But I aim to make a space supremely functional as well. It’s great to have gorgeous surroundings to look at, but you need to be able to live and work there as well.” As a small business owner, work is a passion for Acklin, who credits the Titusville Chamber of Commerce for helping facilitate the growth of Floral Creations by Dawn. “Being a member of the chamber is so helpful for connecting with other businesses and community members, getting the word out about your work and earning recommendations,” she says. “And so much of our world is now driven by an online presence, so being a part of their site, in addition to having our own webpage, is a great way to drive traffic and boost our exposure.”

“THE TITUSVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS DONE A GREAT JOB AT ORGANIZING COMMUNITY EVENTS AND BRINGING PEOPLE FROM ALL DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE TOGETHER TO ENJOY OUR TOWN,” she says. “It’s a wonderful way to showcase local businesses and what they have to offer their neighbors.” ◆

SEADEK IS RIDING A WAVE OF SUCCESSFUL STRATEGIC MOVES TO NEW HEIGHTS. By Mike Candelaria Jason Gardner, a vice president for SeaDek Marine Products, sounds more like an executive in economic development as he explains his company’s focus on tomorrow’s workforce. For the past five years, SeaDek has worked with students in the Melbourne High School Business Academy, introducing them to various careers in manufacturing — from machine operation and quality control to sales, customer support and accounting. SeaDek is a midsize, midtech company in Rockledge that makes a nonabsorbent foam material specifically formulated for marine applications. Durable and shock absorbent, the products provide not only exceptional traction on surfaces, but also protect decks from scratching, chipping and dents. Additionally, its 3M pressuresensitive adhesive backing makes the application process a matter of measure, cut, peel and stick. SPACE COAST B US INE S S
The company’s belief is the more students learn about manufacturing, the better for all.
“MANUFACTURING REALLY WAS N ’ T O N T H E R A DA R FOR A LOT OF THESE KIDS,” GARDNER EXPLAINS. “WE SHOWED THEM THAT MANUFACTURING, AS WE DO IT, ISN’T IN SOME DARK, STINKY, SMOKE-FILLED WAREHOUSE.”
The program now is in its fifth year, and previously the company worked to help shape curriculums at Eastern Florida State College. The move has paid off. Further, workforce development hasn’t been the only strategic move to gain traction. When a recession hit just as the company was entering the marketplace about a decade ago, management pivoted away from new buyers and toward the aftermarket of existing marine owners, all the while continuing to innovate.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE F O R B R E VA R D.
* AS A RESULT, WHEN THE ECONOMY REBOUNDED, SEADEK FOUND FERTILE BUSINESS BOTH IN THE “NEW” AND “EXISTING” MARKETS — A TWOPRONGED APPROACH THAT HAS BROUGHT DOUBLE-DIGIT REVENUE GROWTH SINCE 2010, ACCORDING TO GARDNER. Similarly, thanks to the development of its international certified fabricator and installer networks, SeaDek has successfully developed markets in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe and South America — contributing to a 170 percent increase in overall sales over a three-year period, with exports advancing from less than 3 percent to nearly 10 percent during that same time. SeaDek’s products are exported to a total of 29 countries. Not surprisingly, last April the company received the SBA 2018 Small Business National Exporter of the Year award from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
*
*
Also of note, in 2014 SeaDek became an employee-owned company with the implementation of an ESOP profit sharing plan. Explains Gardner, simply: “We try to make them feel like they’re part of the team and part of the family.” Another form of giving back is evident throughout the community, in time and money, at places like the Brevard Achievement Center, Brevard Zoo, Henegar Center for Performing Arts, One Blood, the Daily Bread, the United Way and Brevard County’s Founders Forum, to name a few. In characteristic style, Gardner deflects any praise or congratulations. In accepting the company’s award from the SBA last spring, he called the achievement a “collaborative effort.” Today, he continues to use phases such as “unified vision” and “our entire staff.” Just like what students are hearing from the company about manufacturing, those words from Gardner represent a lesson worth learning. ◆

Derek LaRon Murphy
Sport: Men’s Basketball Hometown: Detroit, Michigan Major: Business AdministrationAccounting SPACE COAST B US INE S S
erek Murphy is a redshirt junior from the eastside of Detroit. He grew up playing both basketball and football, but in the long run decided to pursue basketball. In high school, Murphy earned all-state honors in both his junior and senior year. From 11 fullride basketball scholarship offers, he decided on Florida Tech. Upon arrival, Murphy’s main goal was to continue to get better every day. After not playing many minutes his freshman year, averaging only 1.7 points and 1.0 rebound a game, he returned as a starter in his sophomore year and averaged 8.4 points and 4 rebounds per game. As a junior, expectations were high for him coming in. Unfortunately, in the pre-season, Murphy suffered from two stress fractures in his foot causing him to sit out the entire season. Returning for his redshirt junior year, he was hungrier than ever, especially after the Panthers
were chosen to finish last in the league. So far, he hasn’t disappointed, leading the Sunshine State Conference in points per game (21.8) and third in the league in rebounds (8.8). He has shown his versatility and effectiveness on both ends of the floor as he has won both the SSC Defensive Player of the Week and the allout SSC Player of the Week. He attributes most of his success to his upbringing. Originating from a city with one of the highest crime rates in the world, there are not many opportunities available for young men from the Motor City. Three of Murphy’s close childhood friends were all murdered in the last two years. He sets out to complete the goals they had set out to achieve. Murphy continues to work on every aspect of his game as he prides himself on outworking the opposition. He claims that the best of him is yet to come. ◆

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.
