“
I loved the idea of establishing comforting relationships with patients in what could be a stressful environment, and I still do.” — Dr. Lee Sheldon
For Dr. Lee Sheldon, the journey to becoming a periodontist was one that included a few right turns. As a junior in college, he was studying pre-med when he realized he did not want to be a physician. Later that semester, he went to New York University with a friend who was having his interview for NYU dental school. Experiencing the dental school first-hand, Dr. Sheldon realized it was what he wanted to do. “I loved the idea of working with dentists and their patients and making their experiences comfortable as well as predictable, and I still do.” he said. Dr. Sheldon went on to graduate from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1975. He received additional training in a dental general practice residency as a captain at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and later served as a dental officer at the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. “When I graduated dental school and went into the Army, I had a great opportunity working under the wing | 4 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
of specialists at Fort Sill,” he explained. “I was particularly inspired by a periodontist there and ultimately decided to follow that passion.” Dr. Sheldon received his certificate as a specialist in periodontics at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. His advanced dental education encompassed many formal programs in dental implants, reconstructive dentistry and cosmetics, including extended training at the Medical College of Georgia. “I had great teachers … people who are leaders in the field now,” he said.
State-of-the-Art Practice In 1980, Dr. Sheldon began his one-doctor periodontal practice in Melbourne. Today, he, along with his general dentist son, Dr. Matt Sheldon, and board-certified periodontist, Dr. Michel Furtado, are part of a full-service practice that includes periodontics, implant dentistry and general dentistry.
NEVER FULLY DRESSED WITHOUT A SMILE Periodontist Dr. Lee Sheldon has provided comprehensive implant, periodontal and full-mouth rehabilitation dental services to area residents for more than 30 years. By Jack Roth
Dr. Lee Sheldon
“We can control the entire process under one roof, and things run a lot smoother this way,” he said. “We have total control over patient care.” Dental services include state-ofthe-art dental implant treatment, gum disease treatment and full dental rehabilitation. The practice also provides full-service dentistry, including cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges and cosmetic dentistry, such as porcelain veneers and Invisalign® clear braces, as well as cosmetic gum surgery for gummy smiles or teeth that appear too long. Dr. Sheldon and his team use stateof-the-art technology for precise, minimally invasive dental implant placement. They also use the most SPRING 2019 | 5 |

recent breakthroughs in technology to make the patient experience as comfortable and efficient as possible. The first dentist from Central Florida to use computerguided surgery for implant placement, Dr. Sheldon was also the first to use the dental endoscope to assist in the effective nonsurgical treatment of gum disease. These innovations have led to the Solid Bite concept, providing beautiful, functional and efficient dental restorations. Using 3D X-rays and 3D imaging technology, Dr. Sheldon, Dr. Sheldon, and Dr. Furtado can plan implant placement ahead of time, reducing chair time as well as surgery. He is also one of only 100 doctors in the U.S who uses the nonsurgical Perioscope to treat gum disease. The Perioscope is a periodontal endoscope; a slender camera that is placed into the periodontal pocket. With this instrument, patients can avoid gum surgery in the majority of cases. “I did periodontal surgery and later learned bone grafting, gum tissue grafting and dental implants, which came out in the 1980s,” explained Sheldon. “The Perioscope came out in the 1998, and for the first time, I was able to see under the gum line without doing surgery. This was a game changer in the treatment of periodontal disease.” Technology is constantly changing dentistry in every possible area. When Dr. Sheldon first started, dentists were | 6 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
— Dr. Lee Sheldon
not easily able to identify the bacteria that were responsible for more progressive conditions. “We couldn’t see what bacteria was there,” he said, “but now we can identify the DNA of the bacteria as well as the best treatment for that bacteria, and thus reduce the need for periodontal surgery.”
Working With Family When Dr. Matt Sheldon, joined the practice as a general dentist in 2012, the elder Sheldon changed his marketing approach from relying on referrals to direct marketing. It is rather unusual for a periodontist to do so. But patients like the idea of having work done all under one roof rather than going to one office for periodontal and implant treatment and another for the dental restorations. “The fact that Matt is a talented general dentist has opened doors that I never anticipated,” he acknowledged. “Not only are we making it work, I’m actually speaking to a national audience of periodontists about the benefits of doing so.” So interested have been the periodontists that he has spoken at two national meetings as well as several regional meetings around the country.” Dr. Sheldon admits he can appreciate that his son looks at things differently as a general dentist. He noted that Matt also has new technologies he can use to better help his patients. “I’m proud and thrilled to be working with Matt,”
he said. “A lot of periodontists are jealous of me right now. This is just one more experience to share together.” And he shares this experience with other family members, as well. In addition to Matt, Sheldon’s wife, Eleanor, is in charge of the practice’s finances. His daughter, Stephanie Wintercorn, is the practice’s marketing manager. “My oldest son, Dan, is a sportscaster in Portland, Oregon, the only one who didn’t catch the dental bug,” Sheldon joked. When Dr. Furtado joined the practice four years ago, this completed the team. A diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Dr. Furtado added computer-guided surgical technology as well as his outstanding surgical skill to complement the team. He now does all of the surgery in the office. Every Thursday morning, the three doctors are busy at 7 AM, reviewing cases together and taking advantage of each other’s expertise to plan each complex patient. The combination of three viewpoints for every complex case gives the patient a tremendous advantage. “This is the most fun I have had in my entire career,” Sheldon proudly states.
Fully Engaged and Happy According to Dr. Sheldon, Brevard County has been a great place to have a practice and raise a family. From a business perspective, he has tried to grow with the region and stay active in the community. Dr. Sheldon has served in leadership roles in various dental organizations and was the chairman of the dental department at Holmes Regional Medical Center. He has chaired the Brevard Study Club since 1995, bringing dental continuing education to Brevard County dentists. He was also an associate clinical professor in the University of Florida College of Dentistry’s graduate department of periodontology, where he helped train periodontists of the future. And now, he teaches other periodontists around the country through his training organization, The Institute for Dental Specialists. Dr. Sheldon, Dr. Matt Sheldon and Dr. Furtado have authored a book, “The Ultimate Mouth Manual,” which contains information patients need to make dental decisions in the 21st century. Perhaps most importantly, everyone in the practice concentrates on ensuring the doctors, staff and patients all have fun in the office. Danyel Joyner, practice manager and IV therapist, has been with the practice for more than 13 years and sets the tone in the office, making sure everyone is always happy. That makes for a happy dental experience as well. “It’s really a great atmosphere for everyone, including the patients,” affirmed Sheldon. “Dental work can be daunting for patients, but we’ve created a team and an environment that is comfortable, friendly and relaxing.” SPRING 2019 | 7 |
SEE WHAT YOU’VE BEEN MISSING CataLaze™ Cataract Treatment
Many medical treatments are intended to simply slow the advance of a deteriorating condition. In fact, in most cases that is an acceptable outcome. Few can actually turn back the hands of time and return you to where you were 20, 30 or even 40 years ago. But that is often the case with Dr. Rafael Trespalacios’ (Dr. Tres) “CataLaze” cataract treatment. One person described cataracts as beginning with a blurriness or haziness in one or both eyes. Others have found, while driving at night, they see halos around lights and headlights. Some tend to misread words, so that “car” looks like “cat,” or a vibrant red is mistaken for maroon. All of these are signs of one of the most common causes of vision loss in people over 40. In fact, sometime after age 50, most of us are likely to hear our eye care professional say, “You have cataracts.” Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens and are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. As you age the chances of developing cataracts spikes from 5.2 percent in those 50-54, to 68.3 percent in those over 80. The good news is, though cataracts cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or LASIK procedures, Dr. Tres, | 8 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH

of Brevard Eye, is able to perform an outpatient surgical procedure that could only be described as life-altering. For most patients, they feel the clock on their eyesight has been rolled back decades.
Experiencing the Difference Dr. Tres explained, “Aging and other factors cause proteins in the eye’s lens to clump together forming these cloudy areas. Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the cloudy lens and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens, called an intra-ocular implant, or, IOL.” Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in the developed world, which is why the CataLaze Refractive Suite of cataract treatment is such a differentiator and one of several procedures that Dr. Tres was first to introduce in the region. It also helps explain why he has been recognized as one of the “Best Doctors” in the country. The technology used in CataLaze allows Dr. Tres to analyze a patient’s eye during cataract surgery, which gives him the most precise and premium lens implant solution, in real time. “This takes some of the guess work out of the equation and therefore can dramatically improve patient outcomes,” he said. Amazingly, the time for one of these procedures is less than 15 minutes and in as little as a few hours typically results in long-lasting clear vision and in many cases eliminates the need for glasses altogether. Imagine, in the time you would take to get a quote from Geico, you can completely change how you see life.
Dr. Rafael Trepalacios
As we move closer to a new decade, Baby Boomers’ need for cataract surgery will peak in 2020. “Though no procedure can guarantee 20/20 vision,” Tres said. “What if part of your personal vision for 2020 included a transformational vision experience that moves you towards 20/20?” We all know life brings changes, and one of those can be the quality of our eyesight. But as the team at Brevard Eye says, “We fix your eyesight, so you fix your eyes on what matters most.”

Highly-Skilled Nursing, Resort-Style Recovery VIERA DEL MAR OFFERS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE, LUXURIOUS AMENITIES FOR OPTIMAL CARE By Carrie Stevenson
Viera del Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center combines a progressive approach to medical care, a home-like atmosphere and a dedication to concierge-level service to provide a unique option for short-term skilled nursing and rehabilitation in Brevard County. As part of the Pensacola-based Gulf Coast Health Care company, Viera del Mar offers physical, occupational and speech therapy services and features 131 beds, 3,850 square feet of therapy space, 24-hour nursing care, and coordination with specialty physicians. The nursing and rehabilitation care at Viera del Mar is centered on clinical excellence and a proactive approach to treatment. “Viera del Mar will admit patients seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” says Vivian Trueba, regional director of community development for Gulf Coast Health Care. “In addition to our rehabilitation therapies, we offer wound care, antibiotic treatment, and nutrition management for those recovering from an infection, with a nurse dedicated to overseeing that process. It’s a truly comprehensive approach.” That approach extends beyond clinical care as well, explains Rachael Mazer, NHA, administrator for Viera del Mar. “Because the goal is easing the transition between the hospital and the patient’s home environment, we offer three outdoor courtyards, including one featuring pebbles and sand so they can walk on different surfaces. There is an Activities of Daily Living suite set up like a studio apartment, including a bed, kitchen sink, and washer and dryer so patients can practice independent physical tasks while recuperating. We also offer restaurant-style dining, our full-service day spa, and a movie theatre.” Customer service is a point of pride at Viera del Mar. Care is provided by associates who have undertaken significant training through the concierge Center Ambassador Program, which helps reduce patient and family anxiety by explaining the services and amenities from the moment they arrive. And it doesn’t stop when a patient leaves: as part of their Transitional Care Program, staff will follow up to monitor a patient’s progress at home over 30 days to prevent rehospitalization. HOW TO DETECT THE DANGER SIGNS
ACCORDING TO THE HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE AT ROCKLEDGE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
BE SURE TO WATCH FOR THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN:
+
Chest discomfort (can feel like pressure or squeezing in the center of the chest)
+
Pain in other parts of the body, such as back, neck, jaw, stomach and arms
+ +
Shortness of breath with chest discomfort Other signs include cold sweats, vomiting and lightheadedness
Symptoms for Men Men have a greater heart attack risk than women, and they experience attacks earlier in life. Risks can be lowered by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, managing stress, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption. Some do not experience chest pain at all, and often, symptoms can come on slowly.
Symptoms for Women Although the most common symptom is chest pain, women are more likely than men to experience other common symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea and other pains.

EXERCISE TIPS | 16 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
FOR THE
HEART-CONSCIOUS
PERSON
Along with eating the right foods, exercising also plays a major role in preventing illnesses such as heart disease. Strengthening muscles and the body can help manage chronic conditions while also aiding in preventative care. After all, the heart is a muscle, and living an active life can ultimately help down the road. Here are some exercises that will get the heart pumping and muscles strengthened.
Interval Training Interval training is not only good for preventing heart disease, but other diseases as well. Think bursts of high-intensity exercises combined with longer periods of active recovery. For the walking crowd, alternate the pace by doing three minutes at normal speed and then one minute of brisk walking. The benefits: raising and lowering the heart rate continuously improves vascular function and clears fat and sugar from the blood.
Yoga This is great for lowering blood pressure and improving on the elasticity of the blood vessels. The stress-reducing nature of yoga exercises also works the core and tones the muscles.
Non-impact Sports For those with joint issues, non-impact sports can give a total body workout along with providing health benefits for a stronger cardiovascular system. Swimming and kayaking are good examples of non-impact sports that are easy on the joints.

Wild Ocean Seafood Market: Providing Healthy and Sustainable Wild-Caught Seafood By Alisha Crabtree Are you searching for savory and superb seafood? Based in Titusville and supported by Port Canaveral docks, Wild Ocean Seafood Market features premium wild-caught shrimp and fish. For four generations, the family-owned and - operated company has specialized in and continues providing Floridians with healthy and sustainable seafood. “Shrimp and fish remain two of the most nutritious and tastiest foods one can consume,” said Jeanna Merrifield, one of the three owners of Wild Ocean Seafood Market. “Each is loaded with essential nutrients, including protein, Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Eating seafood can lower blood pressure and cholesterol, fight depression and anxiety, promote brain health and improve bone and joint health. Wild Ocean Seafood Market strives to educate consumers about food choices and the advantages of locally grown and harvested shrimp and fish.” Benefits of Wild-Caught Seafood The World Bank predicts by 2030 nearly two-thirds of consumed seafood will be exclusively farm-raised to compensate, recoup and counterbalance for overfishing. Farm-raised shrimp and fish live in crowded cages submerged in lakes, ponds and other bodies of salt water. Due to these small quarters, farm-raised shrimp and fish tend to be fattier, which causes higher concentrations of omega-6 acids, contaminants and carcinogenic chemicals. They are fed antibiotics and pesticides to fight various diseases. When ingested, this may put consumers at increased risk of heart disease, cancer and depression. Because wild-caught shrimp and fish live in nonconstricted, natural conditions and environments, each swims freely, resulting in half the fat farm-raised fish exhibit. Unlike farm-raised seafood, wild-caught shrimp and fish are not force-fed antibiotics and pesticides. | 20 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
Therefore, they do not contain harmful toxins and chemicals and do not exhibit or force any ill effects on their natural environment. Just imagine what those same contaminants can do to the body in the long run! Offering Fresh, Local Seafood “Seafood lovers appreciate what they consume, where it originates, and its impact on health and environment,” said Merrifield. “Wild Ocean Market is passionate about fresh seafood at competitive prices. We believe local agriculture is the desirable, expedient and optimum approach to supporting economic growth with fewer resources.” When purchasing wild-caught seafood, consumers are not contributing to farm-raised operations. Wild Ocean Seafood Market shrimp and fish are flash frozen at sea without preservatives or chemicals and processed at its local facility, therefore, maintaining the freshest, purest quality. Depending on the season, Wild Ocean Seafood Market sells brown, white, Key West pink, royal red, and rock shrimp, fish, shellfish and wild caught gator. Wild Ocean Seafood Market also offers a full range of casual seafood menu items at their Titusville Eatery. Local products are used and typically come from the Port Canaveral docks. Their kitchen is a scratch kitchen, which means that everything is made from scratch. A pick-up catering menu is available and brunch will be offered in the near future.

“Miracle Facial lift” No Downtime, No Incisions, Instant Results By Alisha Crabtree
Dr. Anita Saluja
Advancements in current cosmetic technology are enabling individuals to undergo non-invasive procedures putting off traditional surgical facelift results. Patients appreciate and admire results without the unwelcoming post-operative effects, including facial discomfort and extensive healing time. Millennials and baby boomers alike are increasingly turning to less-invasive techniques to promote youthful appearance. Exclusively performed by Dr. Anita Saluja, a boardcertified dermatologist, at Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, the ultramodern “miracle facial lift,” known as the Y LIFT, delivers on the promise of enhanced looks without scalpels and sutures.
| 22 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
A “Structural Volumizing” Philosophy Described as a revolutionary and minimally invasive facial contouring technique, the Y LIFT replenishes lost volume by lifting, filling and sculpting the face to reflect an enhanced youthful, beautiful, restored, rejuvenated and natural appearance. “The Y LIFT is disciplined and methodized on a ‘structural volumizing’ philosophy,” said Saluja. “Throughout the aging process, one loses the youthful volume and elasticity keeping the face perky, plump and supple. The results are wrinkling and sagging skin. This procedure not only replenishes lost volume and restores ideal facial contours, but enhances the natural features making the procedure suitable for men and women. It resurrects and accentuates the cheekbone region, revives under-eye hollowness, defines the jawline, rids unpleasant jowls and vitalizes the upper neck area, all while producing instant results.
Benefits of the Y LIFT Performed under a local anesthetic, patients may immediately resume daily activities post procedure. Individuals may feel slight tenderness, soreness and possible minor bruising; however, effects subside within one to two weeks. The technique has a built-in safety, being one of the few procedures that is completely reversible. The Y LIFT lasts one to three years. Individual results vary based on metabolic rates. Periodic touch-ups are recommended to maintain the effects of the procedure.
BEFORE Y LIFT
AFTER Y LIFT
BEFORE Y LIFT
AFTER Y LIFT
A Customized and Individualistic Approach The Y LIFT uses a specialized titanium instrument inserted beneath the skin and skin fillers to instantly lift and contour the muscles, fascia and fat. The rejuvenated face is then sculpted to accent, enhance and highlight the individual’s natural beauty. “We utilize a very individualistic approach by closely studying the facial structure of each patient and fully customize the procedure to the patient resulting in natural accents of specific features,” explained Saluja.
Best Self No two patients are alike - their treatment plans should be just as unique. Dr. Saluja, Central Florida’s esteemed number one volume aesthetic injector, will customize your Y LIFT. If the Y LIFT is not best for you, Dr. Saluja and her partner, Dr. Rebecca Novo, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, have a unique array of modern surgical and nonsurgical approaches for your best self.

A BETTER VERSION OF OURSELVES By Denise Piercy

Let’s face it; we all want to be a better version of ourselves. We make ourselves promises to do better tomorrow. “Tomorrow, I’m going to eat better.” “Tomorrow I’m going to exercise.” “Tomorrow, I’m going to be nicer to people and more patient.” Haven’t we all thought these things? I know I do. I think it is pretty easy to start some of these promises we make to ourselves. The difficult part is keeping at it. Any type of exercise is good for our bodies. Whether it be walking, running, lifting weights, tennis or stand up paddle boarding. Staying on a fitness routine is difficult for most of us. Our busy lives exhaust us and constantly give us a myriad of reasons for not exercising today. I run and lift weights. But if that is not what you like to do, you can interchange any activity that you enjoy. I would say thaI exercise because I know it is good for me but that is not my main motivation. That is the key! What is your motivation? Mine is mostly social. I run because I get to see my best friend. We talk the entire time we run together. We miss our conversations the most when we are unable to meet up to run. I guess we could meet for coffee but then we would lose the physical benefits of the run. The byproduct of this is exercise, of course. We feel better when we run, and are more patient and have less anxiety. With these reasons, you would think that it would be easy to continue. However, when the alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m., all I want to do is keep sleeping in my cozy bed! But wait, I cannot do that; my best friend is on her way to meet me to run. I can’t leave her waiting, so I muster up the energy to get out of bed. And I am always happy I did every single time. I cannot say I have ever regretted getting out of bed to run. I have found this is paramount to continue any exercise program. Have a partner who is counting on you to be there. Another really good motivator is having a specific goal event. It’s easy with running and walking because there is an event or two in our area each weekend. Studying for a test and then taking the test is like training for an event and then taking the test when you finish that 5K or any distance event. You are truly set up for success when you and your partner or partners choose a goal event together. You get to train together and have a good time together, too! If I know I have my friend meeting me and we have to get in the miles for our “test” in eight weeks, I know I won’t miss my workout. Find your favorite activity and grab a partner that keeps you accountable. See you out there!

A GOOD NIGHT’S
SLEEP IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART
By Parrish Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center Manager and Brevard A.W.A.K.E. Coordinator Kristina Weaver, RPSGT

nlike what many people think, sleep apnea is not just a sleep problem.
organs don’t get the oxygen they need. It is a serious problem, especially for the heart. During sleep, the body should rest. With sleep apnea, the body struggles due to low oxygen levels causing increased stress on the heart.
Lack of Oxygen, Sleep Apnea and the Heart Because of the lack of oxygen, people with untreated sleep apnea are at a higher higher risk for a stroke and heart attack. In fact, men with untreated sleep apnea have double risk for a stroke. A few years ago, I did a sleep study on my father. He stopped breathing 41 times an hour and had two episodes of ventricular tachycardia and a seven second sinus monitor, I prayed he did not have any more arrhythmias. Since the arrhythmias were caused by sleep apnea and lack of oxygen, we started CPAP. Once his oxygen levels came up and we treated his sleep apnea, his heart stayed in a normal rhythm. Unfortunately he was in denial and refused any kind of treatment. his sleep and passed away. A person with untreated sleep apnea is three times more likely than the normal population to die of sudden cardiac death between midnight and 6 a.m. spacecoastLIVING living HEALTH HEALTH 28| |spacecoast | 26

INCREASED RISK OF DEVELOPING HEART FAILURE FROM UNTREATED SLEEP APNEA
How the Heart Works
BLOOD FLOW OF THE HUMAN HEART
To understand, let’s think of the way the heart works. The heart has four chambers which make up the right and left sides of the heart. Think of these two sides of the heart as two pumps the left side of the heart or “lung pump” and the right side of the heart or “body pump.” The lung pump sends blood from the heart to the lungs to get oxygen. After the lungs oxygenate the blood, it is sent to the body pump. Then, the body pump sends this oxygenated blood to the body. With sleep apnea, the process to receive oxygenated blood does not happen properly. None of the organs, including the heart, receive the oxygen needed. This puts stress on the heart, causing it to have to work harder. It’s comparable to a person attempting a marathon with no training or conditioning; very dangerous. This is the reason there is a higher risk of heart failure with sleep apnea. Usually it’s left ventricular heart failure in patients with sleep apnea. Remember, the left side of your heart is your body pump. The body pump works extra hard to move poorly oxygenated blood all the way to the brain and the toes. Since the body pump does not have the oxygen it needs, it has to work even harder. As a result, the heart becomes enlarged and tired and eventually fails.
?
SIGNS YOU MAY HAVE SLEEP APNEA
Men have a 58 percent increased risk of developing heart failure from untreated sleep apnea. Because the heart has to pump so much harder, blood pressure increases. Medication may help to control high blood pressure, but really it’s just a Band-Aid. Patients with sleep apnea run as high as an 85 percent risk of having blood pressure that is hard to control. A lot of times, sleep apnea is the cause of high blood pressure. A lack of oxygen to the heart, like a lack of oil to an engine, causes things to misfire and work improperly. The pumps of the heart work from an electrical system. If the electrical system is not getting the fuel it needs, it will begin to fail and have misfires or frayed signals.
Atrial Fibrillation, Sleep Apnea and CPAP Atrial fibrillation is one of the most irregular heartbeats. Atrial fibrillation is a quivering of the atrium, or a bunch of misfires from the top part of your heart. With atrial fibrillation, the blood cannot fully leave the top part of the heart; therefore it can clot in the heart. Eventually those clots may move. They could move to the brain, heart or another part of the body. It’s critical to treat atrial fibrillation as soon as possible. By simply treating sleep apnea with CPAP we can decrease the risk of developing atrial fibrillation by 70 percent! No medication can do what CPAP can. This shows there is a direct correlation between atrial fibrillation and untreated sleep apnea. The words “sleep apnea” are under-valued. Sleep apnea not only impacts sleep, it damages the heart. If you have sleep apnea you may feel as though you sleep through the night; you may feel well and rested, but the truth is, your heart will not. ◆

Being Happy in Your Own Body Allison Kimmey’s Point of View By Mallorie Ann Ingram

Some tips from Allison on finding joy
Once upon a time there was a girl that didn’t quite fit in, no matter how hard she tried to be like everyone else. She worshiped gossip magazines, did all the celebrity diets, cut out pictures of thin models she wanted to look like and lived on anything that said “fat free” and cardio. Sound familiar? We’ve all been down this road before, in some shape or form, whether it be with someone we know or from our very own personal experience. Self-love expert, author, and body image coach Allison Kimmey shares some secrets to being content and loving your own unique self. “I was a slave to some variation of this mindset, to maintain an acceptable physique while tearing my body apart every chance I had, whether I was a size two or 20, and everywhere in between,” Kimmey says. Like most women, Kimmey’s physical appearance had been her only priority for so long that she forgot about the importance of one’s mental and spiritual health. In fact, those progressively deteriorated in correlation with the increasing obsession with her overall physical appearance. It wasn’t until about six years ago, while writing in a pregnancy journal to her unborn daughter, “I hope you are nothing like me,” that something clicked. She read those words aloud again and realized something profound. Instead, she realized the importance of being a mentor to her daughter some day, something she always wished she had as a young girl.
