BUY FAIR TRADE TEXTILES
By Casey Wilkerson
Buying ethical for your wedding day doesn’t have to mean style sacrifices.
Reformation
What if your wedding dress could be worn every day? Celia Grace carries a collection that is both fair trade and made as separates or basics for year-round wear. Celia Grace offers a great option for brides looking for ethical wedding dresses to become part of their wardrobe. They offer the first bridal line to be Fairtrade certified. This ensures fair wages for farmers and workers who create textiles and can help to end poverty in their countries. Quality of life and safety are the goals of fair trade. Celia Grace has also partnered with Tailored for Education, an organization that provides school uniforms to children in developing countries.
Are there wedding dresses that clock in under $600 dollars and are made with the Earth in mind? Yes, Reformation does that! Keeping ethical practices at the center of their business model, Reformation pledges to count more than just profits. Their team created an assessment tool that tracks the company’s fashion footprint. Pounds of carbon dioxide produced, gallons of water used, and the pounds of waste generated are posted on every page of the Reformation website. They are proud to claim a green infrastructure that minimizes water and energy waste and a system that donates, repurposes, or recycles 75 percent of all unused textiles and organic waste.
BUY VINTAGE
Did you know there are several ways to incorporate the eco-friendly lifestyle into your most dazzling look yet? Here are four ways to personalize your mash-up of fair trade and funky or chic and sustainable. ⊲
BUY FROM SUSTAINABLE FACILITIES
Celia Grace
DON’T BUY AT ALL
William Vintage
Rent-the-Runway
How many brides can boast a dress made in 1936? Explore vintage pieces for high quality, unique dresses. This eliminates demand for textile production and gives new life to a beautiful antique design. Approximately 20 percent of industrial water pollution comes from textile dying and treatment, and 425,000,000 gallons of water are used to produce textiles in India alone.
Rent! Rent the Runway has designer styles for rent under their “For the Bride” category. You can pay per rental or begin a monthly plan if you choose to rent your daily styles too. If you know your wedding dress is only for the wedding, consider only renting your look for the week. This will prove far cheaper and allow new brides to shoulder the environmental burden of a dress that would only be worn once. ◆

Letter from the
EDITOR Hi everyone,
If you’re looking to spruce up your love life plans this year, you’re in luck. Now that we’ve hit the month of romance here on the Space Coast, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that our scenic county is jam-packed with fun things to see and do. Watch as sparks fly, from visits to rooftop restaurants with a view or simply with a cozy trip to the beach to look up at the stars. Needless to say, hopeless romantics are all set. What is it that makes us feel so good when we’re loved or we care for others? Now hang on a second. I’m not here to give a lesson on a Showing Love 101 course, but did you know that even the smallest, selfless action can change a person’s day or mindset? Studies have proven that smiling can actually give us the “feel-good neurotransmitters,” which everybody knows are key to reducing stress and improving the body’s overall wellness. The same concept applies to hugging. The next time you’re having a rough day or notice another person struggling, try being kind. Say hello with a smile on your face and watch what happens. You not only will bring joy to that person, but you, yourself are more than likely to have a little extra pep in your step. How do I know this? For starters, I’ve been on the receiving end… You know, the classic bad day syndrome and it took one person (whether that be from my Starbucks’ barista or a family member) to simply smile and be kind and immediately my day changed for the good. Whether you have someone special in your life this year or not, show a little love this month and cherish the joy it brings both you and the other person.

Colds, flu, sinus problems and general gunk. It’s that time of year again. Protecting ourselves from a homeopathic aspect is just as important as getting the recommended shots, which often are not total protection anyway. 20 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
I CAN’T RECOMMEND ENOUGH USING THIEVES OIL. I never leave the house without it. It’s part of my morning routine. All it entails is rubbing 2-3 drops onto the soles of your feet. The reason is that the skin there is generally not very sensitive, so for those of you who have problems with that, fear not. The skin there is also quite absorbable. The clove scent of thieves oil is pleasant. I will also reapply it at the end of the day if I’m going out to any sort of function where I’ll be shaking hands. Other than that, think of all the germ filled things we touch on a regular basis — door handles, sink faucets, toilet handles, the list goes on. We all need some extra protection each and every day.
MY OTHER GO-TO PRODUCT IS PEPPERMINT OIL. I don’t take decongestants. If you don’t have a full-blown sinus infection, a few drops rubbed into your temples and dabbed under your nose will open you up and relieve any pressure there. Not to mention the scent is very soothing. It also works anytime you may be nauseated — peppermint is known to alleviate nausea. Both of these products can also be used in a diffuser, which I also highly recommend. Again, both are pleasant scents, and a room filled with these essential oils is very therapeutic. Lastly, to help boost the immune system, I highly recommend doses of Vitamin C in powder form, not pills. Anything in powder form is better absorbed into the body. A scoop dissolved in water twice a day works wonders. For those of you who get all the recommended shots, that’s great; but they’re not enough. They need a complement on a daily basis. ◆
Here’s to a healthy and happy 2019, and remember...

Visit the brewery or the tap room to discover the hype that started way back in 1997. The brewery is located in the Cape just a few miles from Port Canaveral, but you can find Florida Beer Company’s products throughout the Space Coast.
Playalinda Brewing Company is closer to Titusville than the Cape, but worth the trip every time. You can visit its first location in Titusville or the renovated Brix Project. The brewhouse has many homemade special beers such as Tropical Wonderland, Pleasure Chest IPA, Playalinda Blonde Ale, Key Lime Slice and more. At Playalinda, you can also find great service, a fun beer garden, adult games and great fun.
As the name suggests, the Cocoa Beach Brewing Company is located in Cocoa Beach. The Cocoa Beach Brewing Company is a familyowned and operated brewery and pub founded in 2008. Interiorscapes: Bringing Plants and People Back Together By Elayne Kershaw
Outdoor gardens have always been cultivated to display plants and other forms of nature for our pleasure and enjoyment. Gardens have other practical functions, too, such as growing fruits and vegetables, but they primarily enable us to retain that sense of being close to nature and beauty, especially because the demands of the modern world require us to spend so much time in the home or office.
R
obbin Ward, a horticulturalist and owner of A Passion for Plants, articulates some of the other lesser-known benefits of plants, which explains why we should try to have them indoors with us as well.“The presence of plants in the workplace helps employees by reducing stress levels and increasing productivity,” she said. “Plants are also great for cleaning the air so employees can breathe easy.” Ward designs and creates interiorscapes for the office, as well as hospitals, hotels and restaurants. Kim Raney at Rockledge Garden 24 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
Center, who has also worked on several projects with Ward, promotes the therapeutic value of plants in the home. “They make us feel serene and peaceful,” explained Raney. “They’re good for the soul. Having plants in your home helps you remain at one with nature. They break down the artificial barrier created by the walls of your home.”
Not everyone can have their own version of Eden outside their home or office. Some people live in apartments with no outside area at all.
A BUILDER FOR YOUR
EXCEPTIONAL
LifeStyle
Disabled people might not be able to manage the initial set up or the ongoing maintenance. Second-home owners in Florida may only visit occasionally, but they still want something that will thrive despite minimal input. The indoor garden is the ideal solution for all these situations. If you’re a complete gardening novice or don’t feel you have sufficient horticultural knowledge to undertake the task yourself, local specialists like Ward and Raney can help you design the perfect indoor garden for your needs. They will take into account the amount of light available, the décor, the dimensions of the space and the angles of view that will be available. You can have anything from an enclosed miniature garden to a grand set piece, complete with waterfalls, ponds, fountains and rockeries. Lights, mirrors, stones and ornaments can also be cleverly incorporated to create a specific theme. They also know which plants thrive best in which interior environments, and they can even create an alternating color display throughout the year. In February, orchids, begonias, peace lilies and anthuriums are all excellent choices, along with lots of general greenery.
Spring is in the air, and you can bring it right into your home or office with your own stunning interiorscape. ◆

The Tip That Will Change Your Life With Gillian Rixey
Decluttering THE HOUSE IS SOMETHING THAT SEEMS TO NEVER GO AWAY
26 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
As soon as you've organized things, more accumulates. And so, the cycle continues. The Internet is full of bloggers and vloggers who specialize in the art of organization. Too much information and self-help can often overwhelm you to the point of no return. This easy declutter tip will truly change your life. And its power lies in its utter simplicity …
Do one thing every day. What does this actually mean? Well, and here is the fun part, it can mean whatever you want it to. It could be putting one out-of-place item away, tackling a tiny chore or
doing one thing outside the normal household routine every day. This is a completely customizable tip, depending on your mood. In the mood to clean? Do one thing every
day, organize a drawer or clean one cabinet that has not been cleaned in a year. Not only will you feel more productive but you’ll notice a habit forming and a better quality of life. ◆

A Special Gift to
Each O ther
By Elayne Kershaw
If you are thinking about how to celebrate your love this Valentine’s Day and you want to make it unique and memorable, you could choose something even more intimate than the traditional candlelit dinner for two. A couple’s spa session offers the opportunity to spend a day together in peaceful, private surroundings, sharing the rejuvenating benefits of a customized range of body treatments. 28 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
You can plan the day yourself by selecting from a wide range of tension-releasing massages (from the scalp to the whole body) and complementing these with relaxing hot tubs, aromatherapy showers and hydrating body wraps. In between sessions you can take time out to eat, drink, swim or just simply lounge around on luxurious sofas and talk. The food will be nutritious and healthy, though you can also spoil yourselves with chocolate and champagne if you want to. For couples who might be experiencing difficulties, counselors suggest that shared spa days can help with the “fix” because it’s often the demands and stresses of everyday life that have caused the issues and some time-out together in a restorative, healing setting can provide the much-needed time to focus on each other and remember why you first fell in love.
IT IS THE SIDE-BY-SIDE APPROACH TO A COUPLE’S SPA DAY THAT SETS THE MOOD OF BLISSFUL TOGETHERNESS. You may occasionally fall into restful sleep, but your partner is right there beside you, so whenever you are both awake you can gaze at each other as you simultaneously experience all those soothing sensations. Couple’s suites are specially designed to promote calm and tranquility, so all of your senses will be stimulated by soothing sounds and music, fragrant essential oils and tactile hot stones carefully placed on pressure points. The staff at reputable spa centers are highly trained and experienced (and if you want assurances, check their licenses and qualifications and read their reviews) and will make you feel very comfortable at all times. ◆

Look Glamorous on that
Valentine’s Date
get a makeup
MAKEOVER
By Elayne Kershaw
Whether it’s the promise of new love or a celebratory reminder of all your years together, every woman wants to look extra special for her Valentine’s Day date. You’ll invest time in carefully selecting and coordinating your look to reflect the passionate reds and romantic pinks of the occasion in your outfit, accessories, jewelry, hair and nails. You’ll probably use the services of professionals and the advice of friends to help you tick off each essential component from your beauty checklist, but the one aspect of your appearance often unplanned or entrusted to experts is your makeup. Tunde Divoll, business manager for Clinique, says this is because women often apply the same makeup and the same style they’re comfortable with and know they can achieve, especially if they’re pressured for time. They essentially put on the same “face” every day, with varying degrees of emphasis depending on the occasion 30 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
— from natural for daytime to heavier for the evening. Divoll recommends every woman set aside the time to visit a cosmetics counter to learn how to take care of their precious skin with tailor-made products and apply makeup effectively to adapt for different situations.
MOST BEAUTY COUNTERS (ESPECIALLY IN DEPARTMENT STORES) OFFER SOME KIND OF MAKEOVER SERVICE. You can find businesses that sell makeovers exclusively, and there are makeup artists who will come to your home, but the beauty counters in Dillard’s offer free makeovers. There’s no obligation to buy. The point of the free makeover is to enable the customer to better understand their own face, skin type and coloring and equip them with the skills and the products (should they wish to purchase them) to create a range of different makeup styles. You can go to the Clinique counter in Dillard’s (or any of the other brands represented: Lancôme, Estee Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, Clarins or Shiseido) and request an impromptu makeover, but at busy times of the year, such as Valentine’s Day, it’s better to book it. In the capable hands of a trained expert like Divoll, you will discover exactly what type of skin you have and how it behaves. This is fundamentally important knowledge because everything else literally sits on top of the skin. Treating the base layer correctly will help take care of it while also enabling the applied makeup to enhance rather than detract from your features.
AS DIFFERENT ELEMENTS OF MAKEUP ARE SELECTED AND APPLIED TO YOUR FACE, THEY ARE SKETCHED AND LABELLED ON A CUSTOMIZED RECORD SHEET YOU CAN TAKE HOME AND RE-CREATE. Divoll talks to you as she works, explaining exactly how she applies color, shape and contour with foundation, concealer, powder, eye shadow, liner, lash, brow, cheek and lip products. By the time you leave, you look fabulous and have the confidence you can recreate what she has done. ◆

“
I loved the idea of establishing comforting relationships with patients in what could be a stressful environment, and I still do.” — Dr. Lee Sheldon
For Dr. Lee Sheldon, the journey to becoming a periodontist was one that included a few right turns. As a junior in college, he was studying pre-med when he realized he did not want to be a physician. Later that semester, he went to New York University with a friend who was having his interview for NYU dental school. Experiencing the dental school first-hand, Dr. Sheldon realized it was what he wanted to do. “I loved the idea of working with dentists and their patients and making their experiences comfortable as well as predictable, and I still do.” he said. Dr. Sheldon went on to graduate from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in 1975. He received additional training in a dental general practice residency as a captain at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and later served as a dental officer at the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. “When I graduated dental school and went into the Army, I had a great opportunity working under the wing | 4 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
of specialists at Fort Sill,” he explained. “I was particularly inspired by a periodontist there and ultimately decided to follow that passion.” Dr. Sheldon received his certificate as a specialist in periodontics at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. His advanced dental education encompassed many formal programs in dental implants, reconstructive dentistry and cosmetics, including extended training at the Medical College of Georgia. “I had great teachers … people who are leaders in the field now,” he said.
State-of-the-Art Practice In 1980, Dr. Sheldon began his one-doctor periodontal practice in Melbourne. Today, he, along with his general dentist son, Dr. Matt Sheldon, and board-certified periodontist, Dr. Michel Furtado, are part of a full-service practice that includes periodontics, implant dentistry and general dentistry.

recent breakthroughs in technology to make the patient experience as comfortable and efficient as possible. The first dentist from Central Florida to use computerguided surgery for implant placement, Dr. Sheldon was also the first to use the dental endoscope to assist in the effective nonsurgical treatment of gum disease. These innovations have led to the Solid Bite concept, providing beautiful, functional and efficient dental restorations. Using 3D X-rays and 3D imaging technology, Dr. Sheldon, Dr. Sheldon, and Dr. Furtado can plan implant placement ahead of time, reducing chair time as well as surgery. He is also one of only 100 doctors in the U.S who uses the nonsurgical Perioscope to treat gum disease. The Perioscope is a periodontal endoscope; a slender camera that is placed into the periodontal pocket. With this instrument, patients can avoid gum surgery in the majority of cases. “I did periodontal surgery and later learned bone grafting, gum tissue grafting and dental implants, which came out in the 1980s,” explained Sheldon. “The Perioscope came out in the 1998, and for the first time, I was able to see under the gum line without doing surgery. This was a game changer in the treatment of periodontal disease.” Technology is constantly changing dentistry in every possible area. When Dr. Sheldon first started, dentists were | 6 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH

not easily able to identify the bacteria that were responsible for more progressive conditions. “We couldn’t see what bacteria was there,” he said, “but now we can identify the DNA of the bacteria as well as the best treatment for that bacteria, and thus reduce the need for periodontal surgery.”
Working With Family When Dr. Matt Sheldon, joined the practice as a general dentist in 2012, the elder Sheldon changed his marketing approach from relying on referrals to direct marketing. It is rather unusual for a periodontist to do so. But patients like the idea of having work done all under one roof rather than going to one office for periodontal and implant treatment and another for the dental restorations. “The fact that Matt is a talented general dentist has opened doors that I never anticipated,” he acknowledged. “Not only are we making it work, I’m actually speaking to a national audience of periodontists about the benefits of doing so.” So interested have been the periodontists that he has spoken at two national meetings as well as several regional meetings around the country.” Dr. Sheldon admits he can appreciate that his son looks at things differently as a general dentist. He noted that Matt also has new technologies he can use to better help his patients. “I’m proud and thrilled to be working with Matt,”
he said. “A lot of periodontists are jealous of me right now. This is just one more experience to share together.” And he shares this experience with other family members, as well. In addition to Matt, Sheldon’s wife, Eleanor, is in charge of the practice’s finances. His daughter, Stephanie Wintercorn, is the practice’s marketing manager. “My oldest son, Dan, is a sportscaster in Portland, Oregon, the only one who didn’t catch the dental bug,” Sheldon joked. When Dr. Furtado joined the practice four years ago, this completed the team. A diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, Dr. Furtado added computer-guided surgical technology as well as his outstanding surgical skill to complement the team. He now does all of the surgery in the office. Every Thursday morning, the three doctors are busy at 7 AM, reviewing cases together and taking advantage of each other’s expertise to plan each complex patient. The combination of three viewpoints for every complex case gives the patient a tremendous advantage. “This is the most fun I have had in my entire career,” Sheldon proudly states.
Fully Engaged and Happy According to Dr. Sheldon, Brevard County has been a great place to have a practice and raise a family. From a business perspective, he has tried to grow with the region and stay active in the community. Dr. Sheldon has served in leadership roles in various dental organizations and was the chairman of the dental department at Holmes Regional Medical Center. He has chaired the Brevard Study Club since 1995, bringing dental continuing education to Brevard County dentists. He was also an associate clinical professor in the University of Florida College of Dentistry’s graduate department of periodontology, where he helped train periodontists of the future. And now, he teaches other periodontists around the country through his training organization, The Institute for Dental Specialists. Dr. Sheldon, Dr. Matt Sheldon and Dr. Furtado have authored a book, “The Ultimate Mouth Manual,” which contains information patients need to make dental decisions in the 21st century. Perhaps most importantly, everyone in the practice concentrates on ensuring the doctors, staff and patients all have fun in the office. Danyel Joyner, practice manager and IV therapist, has been with the practice for more than 13 years and sets the tone in the office, making sure everyone is always happy. That makes for a happy dental experience as well. “It’s really a great atmosphere for everyone, including the patients,” affirmed Sheldon. “Dental work can be daunting for patients, but we’ve created a team and an environment that is comfortable, friendly and relaxing.” SPRING 2019 | 7 |
SEE WHAT YOU’VE BEEN MISSING CataLaze™ Cataract Treatment
Many medical treatments are intended to simply slow the advance of a deteriorating condition. In fact, in most cases that is an acceptable outcome. Few can actually turn back the hands of time and return you to where you were 20, 30 or even 40 years ago. But that is often the case with Dr. Rafael Trespalacios’ (Dr. Tres) “CataLaze” cataract treatment. One person described cataracts as beginning with a blurriness or haziness in one or both eyes. Others have found, while driving at night, they see halos around lights and headlights. Some tend to misread words, so that “car” looks like “cat,” or a vibrant red is mistaken for maroon. All of these are signs of one of the most common causes of vision loss in people over 40. In fact, sometime after age 50, most of us are likely to hear our eye care professional say, “You have cataracts.” Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens and are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. As you age the chances of developing cataracts spikes from 5.2 percent in those 50-54, to 68.3 percent in those over 80. The good news is, though cataracts cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or LASIK procedures, Dr. Tres, | 8 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH

of Brevard Eye, is able to perform an outpatient surgical procedure that could only be described as life-altering. For most patients, they feel the clock on their eyesight has been rolled back decades.
Experiencing the Difference Dr. Tres explained, “Aging and other factors cause proteins in the eye’s lens to clump together forming these cloudy areas. Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the cloudy lens and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens, called an intra-ocular implant, or, IOL.” Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures in the developed world, which is why the CataLaze Refractive Suite of cataract treatment is such a differentiator and one of several procedures that Dr. Tres was first to introduce in the region. It also helps explain why he has been recognized as one of the “Best Doctors” in the country. The technology used in CataLaze allows Dr. Tres to analyze a patient’s eye during cataract surgery, which gives him the most precise and premium lens implant solution, in real time. “This takes some of the guess work out of the equation and therefore can dramatically improve patient outcomes,” he said. Amazingly, the time for one of these procedures is less than 15 minutes and in as little as a few hours typically results in long-lasting clear vision and in many cases eliminates the need for glasses altogether. Imagine, in the time you would take to get a quote from Geico, you can completely change how you see life.
Dr. Rafael Trepalacios
As we move closer to a new decade, Baby Boomers’ need for cataract surgery will peak in 2020. “Though no procedure can guarantee 20/20 vision,” Tres said. “What if part of your personal vision for 2020 included a transformational vision experience that moves you towards 20/20?” We all know life brings changes, and one of those can be the quality of our eyesight. But as the team at Brevard Eye says, “We fix your eyesight, so you fix your eyes on what matters most.”

Viera del Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center combines a progressive approach to medical care, a home-like atmosphere and a dedication to concierge-level service to provide a unique option for short-term skilled nursing and rehabilitation in Brevard County. As part of the Pensacola-based Gulf Coast Health Care company, Viera del Mar offers physical, occupational and speech therapy services and features 131 beds, 3,850 square feet of therapy space, 24-hour nursing care, and coordination with specialty physicians. The nursing and rehabilitation care at Viera del Mar is centered on clinical excellence and a proactive approach to treatment. “Viera del Mar will admit patients seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” says Vivian Trueba, regional director of community development for Gulf Coast Health Care. “In addition to our rehabilitation therapies, we offer wound care, antibiotic treatment, and nutrition management for those recovering from an infection, with a nurse dedicated to overseeing that process. It’s a truly comprehensive approach.” That approach extends beyond clinical care as well, explains Rachael Mazer, NHA, administrator for Viera del Mar. “Because the goal is easing the transition between the hospital and the patient’s home environment, we offer three outdoor courtyards, including one featuring pebbles and sand so they can walk on different surfaces. There is an Activities of Daily Living suite set up like a studio apartment, including a bed, kitchen sink, and washer and dryer so patients can practice independent physical tasks while recuperating. We also offer restaurant-style dining, our full-service day spa, and a movie theatre.” Customer service is a point of pride at Viera del Mar. Care is provided by associates who have undertaken significant training through the concierge Center Ambassador Program, which helps reduce patient and family anxiety by explaining the services and amenities from the moment they arrive. And it doesn’t stop when a patient leaves: as part of their Transitional Care Program, staff will follow up to monitor a patient’s progress at home over 30 days to prevent rehospitalization. HOW TO DETECT THE DANGER SIGNS
ACCORDING TO THE HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE AT ROCKLEDGE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
BE SURE TO WATCH FOR THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN:
+
Chest discomfort (can feel like pressure or squeezing in the center of the chest)
+
Pain in other parts of the body, such as back, neck, jaw, stomach and arms
+ +
Shortness of breath with chest discomfort Other signs include cold sweats, vomiting and lightheadedness
Symptoms for Men Men have a greater heart attack risk than women, and they experience attacks earlier in life. Risks can be lowered by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, managing stress, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption. Some do not experience chest pain at all, and often, symptoms can come on slowly.
Symptoms for Women Although the most common symptom is chest pain, women are more likely than men to experience other common symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea and other pains.

EXERCISE TIPS | 16 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
FOR THE
HEART-CONSCIOUS
PERSON
Along with eating the right foods, exercising also plays a major role in preventing illnesses such as heart disease. Strengthening muscles and the body can help manage chronic conditions while also aiding in preventative care. After all, the heart is a muscle, and living an active life can ultimately help down the road. Here are some exercises that will get the heart pumping and muscles strengthened.
Interval Training Interval training is not only good for preventing heart disease, but other diseases as well. Think bursts of high-intensity exercises combined with longer periods of active recovery. For the walking crowd, alternate the pace by doing three minutes at normal speed and then one minute of brisk walking. The benefits: raising and lowering the heart rate continuously improves vascular function and clears fat and sugar from the blood.
Yoga This is great for lowering blood pressure and improving on the elasticity of the blood vessels. The stress-reducing nature of yoga exercises also works the core and tones the muscles.
Non-impact Sports For those with joint issues, non-impact sports can give a total body workout along with providing health benefits for a stronger cardiovascular system. Swimming and kayaking are good examples of non-impact sports that are easy on the joints.

Wild Ocean Seafood Market: Providing Healthy and Sustainable Wild-Caught Seafood By Alisha Crabtree Are you searching for savory and superb seafood? Based in Titusville and supported by Port Canaveral docks, Wild Ocean Seafood Market features premium wild-caught shrimp and fish. For four generations, the family-owned and - operated company has specialized in and continues providing Floridians with healthy and sustainable seafood. “Shrimp and fish remain two of the most nutritious and tastiest foods one can consume,” said Jeanna Merrifield, one of the three owners of Wild Ocean Seafood Market. “Each is loaded with essential nutrients, including protein, Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Eating seafood can lower blood pressure and cholesterol, fight depression and anxiety, promote brain health and improve bone and joint health. Wild Ocean Seafood Market strives to educate consumers about food choices and the advantages of locally grown and harvested shrimp and fish.” Benefits of Wild-Caught Seafood The World Bank predicts by 2030 nearly two-thirds of consumed seafood will be exclusively farm-raised to compensate, recoup and counterbalance for overfishing. Farm-raised shrimp and fish live in crowded cages submerged in lakes, ponds and other bodies of salt water. Due to these small quarters, farm-raised shrimp and fish tend to be fattier, which causes higher concentrations of omega-6 acids, contaminants and carcinogenic chemicals. They are fed antibiotics and pesticides to fight various diseases. When ingested, this may put consumers at increased risk of heart disease, cancer and depression. Because wild-caught shrimp and fish live in nonconstricted, natural conditions and environments, each swims freely, resulting in half the fat farm-raised fish exhibit. Unlike farm-raised seafood, wild-caught shrimp and fish are not force-fed antibiotics and pesticides. | 20 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
Therefore, they do not contain harmful toxins and chemicals and do not exhibit or force any ill effects on their natural environment. Just imagine what those same contaminants can do to the body in the long run! Offering Fresh, Local Seafood “Seafood lovers appreciate what they consume, where it originates, and its impact on health and environment,” said Merrifield. “Wild Ocean Market is passionate about fresh seafood at competitive prices. We believe local agriculture is the desirable, expedient and optimum approach to supporting economic growth with fewer resources.” When purchasing wild-caught seafood, consumers are not contributing to farm-raised operations. Wild Ocean Seafood Market shrimp and fish are flash frozen at sea without preservatives or chemicals and processed at its local facility, therefore, maintaining the freshest, purest quality. Depending on the season, Wild Ocean Seafood Market sells brown, white, Key West pink, royal red, and rock shrimp, fish, shellfish and wild caught gator. Wild Ocean Seafood Market also offers a full range of casual seafood menu items at their Titusville Eatery. Local products are used and typically come from the Port Canaveral docks. Their kitchen is a scratch kitchen, which means that everything is made from scratch. A pick-up catering menu is available and brunch will be offered in the near future.

The
“Miracle Facial lift” No Downtime, No Incisions, Instant Results By Alisha Crabtree
Dr. Anita Saluja
Advancements in current cosmetic technology are enabling individuals to undergo non-invasive procedures putting off traditional surgical facelift results. Patients appreciate and admire results without the unwelcoming post-operative effects, including facial discomfort and extensive healing time. Millennials and baby boomers alike are increasingly turning to less-invasive techniques to promote youthful appearance. Exclusively performed by Dr. Anita Saluja, a boardcertified dermatologist, at Dermatology + Plastic Surgery, the ultramodern “miracle facial lift,” known as the Y LIFT, delivers on the promise of enhanced looks without scalpels and sutures.
| 22 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
A “Structural Volumizing” Philosophy Described as a revolutionary and minimally invasive facial contouring technique, the Y LIFT replenishes lost volume by lifting, filling and sculpting the face to reflect an enhanced youthful, beautiful, restored, rejuvenated and natural appearance. “The Y LIFT is disciplined and methodized on a ‘structural volumizing’ philosophy,” said Saluja. “Throughout the aging process, one loses the youthful volume and elasticity keeping the face perky, plump and supple. The results are wrinkling and sagging skin. This procedure not only replenishes lost volume and restores ideal facial contours, but enhances the natural features making the procedure suitable for men and women. It resurrects and accentuates the cheekbone region, revives under-eye hollowness, defines the jawline, rids unpleasant jowls and vitalizes the upper neck area, all while producing instant results.
Benefits of the Y LIFT Performed under a local anesthetic, patients may immediately resume daily activities post procedure. Individuals may feel slight tenderness, soreness and possible minor bruising; however, effects subside within one to two weeks. The technique has a built-in safety, being one of the few procedures that is completely reversible. The Y LIFT lasts one to three years. Individual results vary based on metabolic rates. Periodic touch-ups are recommended to maintain the effects of the procedure.
BEFORE Y LIFT
AFTER Y LIFT
BEFORE Y LIFT
AFTER Y LIFT
A Customized and Individualistic Approach The Y LIFT uses a specialized titanium instrument inserted beneath the skin and skin fillers to instantly lift and contour the muscles, fascia and fat. The rejuvenated face is then sculpted to accent, enhance and highlight the individual’s natural beauty. “We utilize a very individualistic approach by closely studying the facial structure of each patient and fully customize the procedure to the patient resulting in natural accents of specific features,” explained Saluja.
Best Self No two patients are alike - their treatment plans should be just as unique. Dr. Saluja, Central Florida’s esteemed number one volume aesthetic injector, will customize your Y LIFT. If the Y LIFT is not best for you, Dr. Saluja and her partner, Dr. Rebecca Novo, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, have a unique array of modern surgical and nonsurgical approaches for your best self.

A BETTER VERSION OF OURSELVES By Denise Piercy
| 24 | spacecoast LIVING HEALTH
Let’s face it; we all want to be a better version of ourselves. We make ourselves promises to do better tomorrow. “Tomorrow, I’m going to eat better.” “Tomorrow I’m going to exercise.” “Tomorrow, I’m going to be nicer to people and more patient.” Haven’t we all thought these things? I know I do. I think it is pretty easy to start some of these promises we make to ourselves. The difficult part is keeping at it. Any type of exercise is good for our bodies. Whether it be walking, running, lifting weights, tennis or stand up paddle boarding. Staying on a fitness routine is difficult for most of us. Our busy lives exhaust us and constantly give us a myriad of reasons for not exercising today. I run and lift weights. But if that is not what you like to do, you can interchange any activity that you enjoy. I would say thaI exercise because I know it is good for me but that is not my main motivation. That is the key! What is your motivation? Mine is mostly social. I run because I get to see my best friend. We talk the entire time we run together. We miss our conversations the most when we are unable to meet up to run. I guess we could meet for coffee but then we would lose the physical benefits of the run. The byproduct of this is exercise, of course. We feel better when we run, and are more patient and have less anxiety. With these reasons, you would think that it would be easy to continue. However, when the alarm goes off at 5:30 a.m., all I want to do is keep sleeping in my cozy bed! But wait, I cannot do that; my best friend is on her way to meet me to run. I can’t leave her waiting, so I muster up the energy to get out of bed. And I am always happy I did every single time. I cannot say I have ever regretted getting out of bed to run. I have found this is paramount to continue any exercise program. Have a partner who is counting on you to be there. Another really good motivator is having a specific goal event. It’s easy with running and walking because there is an event or two in our area each weekend. Studying for a test and then taking the test is like training for an event and then taking the test when you finish that 5K or any distance event. You are truly set up for success when you and your partner or partners choose a goal event together. You get to train together and have a good time together, too! If I know I have my friend meeting me and we have to get in the miles for our “test” in eight weeks, I know I won’t miss my workout. Find your favorite activity and grab a partner that keeps you accountable. See you out there!

A GOOD NIGHT’S
SLEEP IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART
By Parrish Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center Manager and Brevard A.W.A.K.E. Coordinator Kristina Weaver, RPSGT
U
nlike what many people think, sleep apnea is not just a sleep problem.
organs don’t get the oxygen they need. It is a serious problem, especially for the heart. During sleep, the body should rest. With sleep apnea, the body struggles due to low oxygen levels causing increased stress on the heart.
Lack of Oxygen, Sleep Apnea and the Heart Because of the lack of oxygen, people with untreated sleep apnea are at a higher higher risk for a stroke and heart attack. In fact, men with untreated sleep apnea have double risk for a stroke. A few years ago, I did a sleep study on my father. He stopped breathing 41 times an hour and had two episodes of ventricular tachycardia and a seven second sinus monitor, I prayed he did not have any more arrhythmias. Since the arrhythmias were caused by sleep apnea and lack of oxygen, we started CPAP. Once his oxygen levels came up and we treated his sleep apnea, his heart stayed in a normal rhythm. Unfortunately he was in denial and refused any kind of treatment. his sleep and passed away. A person with untreated sleep apnea is three times more likely than the normal population to die of sudden cardiac death between midnight and 6 a.m. spacecoastLIVING living HEALTH HEALTH 28| |spacecoast | 26
58% MEN HAVE A
INCREASED RISK OF DEVELOPING HEART FAILURE FROM UNTREATED SLEEP APNEA
How the Heart Works
BLOOD FLOW OF THE HUMAN HEART
To understand, let’s think of the way the heart works. The heart has four chambers which make up the right and left sides of the heart. Think of these two sides of the heart as two pumps the left side of the heart or “lung pump” and the right side of the heart or “body pump.” The lung pump sends blood from the heart to the lungs to get oxygen. After the lungs oxygenate the blood, it is sent to the body pump. Then, the body pump sends this oxygenated blood to the body. With sleep apnea, the process to receive oxygenated blood does not happen properly. None of the organs, including the heart, receive the oxygen needed. This puts stress on the heart, causing it to have to work harder. It’s comparable to a person attempting a marathon with no training or conditioning; very dangerous. This is the reason there is a higher risk of heart failure with sleep apnea. Usually it’s left ventricular heart failure in patients with sleep apnea. Remember, the left side of your heart is your body pump. The body pump works extra hard to move poorly oxygenated blood all the way to the brain and the toes. Since the body pump does not have the oxygen it needs, it has to work even harder. As a result, the heart becomes enlarged and tired and eventually fails.
?
SIGNS YOU MAY HAVE SLEEP APNEA
Men have a 58 percent increased risk of developing heart failure from untreated sleep apnea. Because the heart has to pump so much harder, blood pressure increases. Medication may help to control high blood pressure, but really it’s just a Band-Aid. Patients with sleep apnea run as high as an 85 percent risk of having blood pressure that is hard to control. A lot of times, sleep apnea is the cause of high blood pressure. A lack of oxygen to the heart, like a lack of oil to an engine, causes things to misfire and work improperly. The pumps of the heart work from an electrical system. If the electrical system is not getting the fuel it needs, it will begin to fail and have misfires or frayed signals.
Atrial Fibrillation, Sleep Apnea and CPAP Atrial fibrillation is one of the most irregular heartbeats. Atrial fibrillation is a quivering of the atrium, or a bunch of misfires from the top part of your heart. With atrial fibrillation, the blood cannot fully leave the top part of the heart; therefore it can clot in the heart. Eventually those clots may move. They could move to the brain, heart or another part of the body. It’s critical to treat atrial fibrillation as soon as possible. By simply treating sleep apnea with CPAP we can decrease the risk of developing atrial fibrillation by 70 percent! No medication can do what CPAP can. This shows there is a direct correlation between atrial fibrillation and untreated sleep apnea. The words “sleep apnea” are under-valued. Sleep apnea not only impacts sleep, it damages the heart. If you have sleep apnea you may feel as though you sleep through the night; you may feel well and rested, but the truth is, your heart will not. ◆

Once upon a time there was a girl that didn’t quite fit in, no matter how hard she tried to be like everyone else. She worshiped gossip magazines, did all the celebrity diets, cut out pictures of thin models she wanted to look like and lived on anything that said “fat free” and cardio. Sound familiar? We’ve all been down this road before, in some shape or form, whether it be with someone we know or from our very own personal experience. Self-love expert, author, and body image coach Allison Kimmey shares some secrets to being content and loving your own unique self. “I was a slave to some variation of this mindset, to maintain an acceptable physique while tearing my body apart every chance I had, whether I was a size two or 20, and everywhere in between,” Kimmey says. Like most women, Kimmey’s physical appearance had been her only priority for so long that she forgot about the importance of one’s mental and spiritual health. In fact, those progressively deteriorated in correlation with the increasing obsession with her overall physical appearance. It wasn’t until about six years ago, while writing in a pregnancy journal to her unborn daughter, “I hope you are nothing like me,” that something clicked. She read those words aloud again and realized something profound. Instead, she realized the importance of being a mentor to her daughter some day, something she always wished she had as a young girl.

WED DING
CAKE
THEME — Make sure the cake matches the theme of your wedding and the season. You do not want a cake that matches the fall season if you are planning on getting married in spring.
SURROUNDINGS — If the reception is taking place in a small venue with a low ceiling, it is not in your best interest to have a tall cake with many tiers. However, if your venue is larger, then a large cake would be an appropriate complement. If you are choosing an outside venue, be mindful of the weather. If it gets too hot, cakes with whipped cream and buttercream will melt. Invest in a frosting that will hold up in the heat.
THE AREA — Consider a round cake for a round table or a linear design for a rectangular table. Keep in mind how much space the cake will take up on the table and do not forget additional factors such as plates, napkins and silverware.
THOROUGH SEARCH — Each baker By Landon Morley
has his or her own unique style, and each cake is often priced by number of slices, so it is important to have a budget prepared ahead of time. Look at many different vendors and be sure to check how large they slice. You may also consider asking your wedding venue if they recommend any bakers.
TIME — Do not wait until the last week to start thinking about the cake. Plan three to six months in advance. If you are getting married during “wedding season” (spring/summer), give yourself even more time, because wedding cakes will be in high demand.
The Cake You Want —
Remember, this is your wedding, and you should get the flavor and design that most reflects who you are. Maybe you want something traditional like vanilla cake with bride and groom toppers. Or maybe you want chocolate cake with flowers and ribbons.
Get creative, be yourself and have fun selecting your cake! ◆ FEB RUA RY 2019 : 85

Wedding Made Planning Easy Get Married on a Ship! By Sherry Laskin
I
t’s been a while since my wedding back in the early 1980s. I still remember how my mother and I ran from hotel to hotel, florist to florist, and on and on trying to narrow down the possible venues, decorations, menus and more. Had I known then what I know now about having a wedding on a beautiful cruise ship, in port on a sandy beach or while at sea, I’d have jumped at the chance. I’m sure my then-fiancé would have been thrilled not to have to look at another brochure or cake photo.
PLANNING YOUR WEDDING ON A CRUISE SHIP IS LIKE ONE-STOP SHOPPING. At Port Canaveral, on almost any given week, there are at least five, if not more, cruise ship departures. Short three- and four-day cruises to the Bahamas, or longer seven- to 14-day voyages to the Caribbean offer plenty of itinerary options for your special event. For example, let’s say you have family and friends living in Florida you want to invite to your wedding and reception. If you choose a cruise ship, you can have your wedding ceremony and reception onboard while the ship is still in port. Your friends and family can come onboard for the festivities. About an hour before the ship is set to sail away, they disembark. 88 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
Newlyweds have a built-in honeymoon and anyone who wants to cruise along simply books their cruise and stays onboard. It’s also exciting for wedding guests who have never been on a cruise to come aboard, wander through the ship and, of course, participate in your wedding.
Let the wedding planner do the work Cruise ships have a dedicated onboard wedding planner who will work with you and your family to coordinate every bit of detail. From choosing the shipboard venue for the event, to designing a tiered cake, flowers, music, and most important, they’ll even arrange the officiant. Or you can bring your own religious or secular person onboard to legally perform the ceremony while in port.
OF COURSE YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE CRUISE, BUT THAT BECOMES YOUR HONEYMOON. In addition to
Carnival Cruise Lines
your cruise reservation, the cost for a wedding and reception onboard the ship or in U.S. port can run from just over $1,000 to $4 or $5 thousand depending upon how many guests attend and the wedding package you choose.
Where to begin First, decide on length of cruise — three or four day cruises from Port Canaveral mean you’ll cruise to the Bahamas. Five days or more gets you to the Caribbean. Second, find a travel agent to set up your cruise and then connect you with the ship’s Wedding Planner. From then on, you’ll work with the onboard planner to arrange
every detail of your wedding and reception. If friends and family want to cruise with you, your travel agent might suggest blocking group space. This will ensure the best rates and most likely include one or two onboard amenities. Gifts for the guests? Yes, you can package your own pillow gifts to place in each of the reserved rooms.
CRUISE LINES SAILING FROM PORT CANAVERAL INCLUDE DISNEY, ROYAL CARIBBEAN, CARNIVAL AND NORWEGIAN. Make your wedding as stressfree as possible. Getting married on a cruise ship is probably one of the easiest, cost-effective and memorable choices for a wedding. Congratulations and Bon Voyage! ◆ FEB RUA RY 2019 : 89
Groom’s Guide By Landon Morley
SEND INVITATIONS TO YOUR FAMILY
HAVE YOUR VOWS PREPARED
“GROOM” YOURSELF APPROPRIATELY
Personalized invitations are a must for a wedding, and who knows your family better than you? Double check to make sure everyone from your grandmother to your second cousin receives a personalized letter letting them know you cannot wait for them to attend the celebration.
This should be obvious, but do not try to wing it when you tell your bride why you have chosen to spend your life with her. Have your vows written down ahead of time. It can be a sweet gesture to have them practiced and spoken from memory, but keep a copy in your jacket pocket just in case.
In all the hectic planning, sometimes personal hygiene gets overlooked. Do not let this happen on your wedding day! Remember to trim your beard, get a haircut, clip your nails, brush your teeth and take a shower so you look fresh and feel your best on your way to the altar.
90 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
DON’T SAY “I DON’T CARE” WHEN SHE ASKS FOR YOUR OPINION No, you may not be a flower connoisseur, and the color of the bridesmaid’s dress may not be the most fascinating subject to you, but do not make your bride plan all of these details by herself. Provide some feedback! Let her know how you envision your wedding, and work together to create an event that makes you both happy.
LEARN TO DANCE There is no getting around it, you have to dance on your wedding day. If “graceful” is not exactly a word you would use to describe yourself, consider taking dancing lessons before the big day. Not only will you be dancing with your bride, but there is a good chance you will be encouraged to dance with her mother and possibly your grandmother. With a little learning ahead of time, you can master the dance floor with confidence.
HANDLE THE GROOMSMEN Ensure each groomsmen is dressed appropriately and shows up on time. You may want to double check your best man is still holding the rings. Make sure your friends have fun, but not Las Vegas fun. This is an event your family and your spouse’s family will be attending.
PLAN THE HONEYMOON Handle the responsibilities of booking your flight, hotel and travel plans. BONUS: Special surprises like flowers and champagne can go a long way in making your new wife very happy. ◆

Are you a fan of shabby chic and rustic design? If so, burlap is a must-have design tool for any creative person thinking of incorporating burlap into their wedding theme. 1 Table Runner Complemented with old-fashioned candles, complete with dripping wax, a burlap table runner will really set the scene for the overall theme and draw people's eyes to the settings. Burlap goes perfectly with anything that has an antique or vintage vibe. For example, a perfect centerpiece for a burlap table runner is a vintage watering can filled with dried flowers.

The bridal party is going to look magnificent when you adorn them with burlap corsages. The burlap can act as the backdrop to a cream rose accented with pearls, or you can get super crafty and make burlap flowers to act as the focal point. When we think of burlap, we often assume it always comes in a beige, sandy color. Did you know you can actually buy burlap in a range of colors? Imagine how coordinated things will look if you match your burlap corsages to the principal color of your overall theme. A burlap-themed wedding doesn't have to be in neutral colors.
3 Bouquet Wrap We all know weddings involve a lot of bouquet carrying, for both the bride and bridesmaids. Now you can tie your bouquets with burlap and match them to the other burlap accessories you've designed. Again, don't worry that your bright pink roses won't match the neutrality, because you can incorporate as much color as you like with this versatile material. ◆

TURNING THE KEY FOR

Centering on Collaboration Space Coast Health Foundation

YEARS
TURNING THE KEY
FOR CLIENTS Welsh Construction
By Eric Wright
Turnkey is a popular trend in construction, also known as “design-build.” It reflects the same consumer inclination that caused Target to offer everything from groceries, to electronics and soft goods, or Lowe’s to sell refrigerators and stoves, not just lumber and hardware. To have one place where multiple products or services are provided has obvious cost benefits, and facilitates control and accountability. According to Ken Welsh, the president and CEO of Welsh Construction, “Every construction venture, whether it is something as seemingly simple as remodeling an existing building or a new construction project, where the costs are measured in the tens of millions, are all surprisingly complex undertakings.” Thus, to have single source responsibility for all phases, from planning and design, through permitting approvals, to construction through CO (certificate of occupancy), can save clients a tremendous amount of time, money and duress. According to Welsh, “Designbuild is something we specialize in.” The Associated General Contractors of America explains the term simply: “Design-build is a project delivery system that includes an agreement to perform both design and construction under one contract between the owner and a design-builder.”
Expanding the Team
Welsh’s over 35 years in the commercial construction field and as owner of Welsh Construction since 2003, reinforces the team aspect of any successful project. When he served as director of construction for the architecture and engineering firm BRPH, he was immersed in a design-build approach. He carried that experience into Welsh Construction and assembled a team to execute the entire package, from concept to completion, which, for many types of projects, is how the industry is evolving. In addition, clients like to do business with individuals with whom they trust and have experience, so for a contractor to expand to the “design” side of a project and not just the “build’ side is logical.
“‘Building relationships for life,’ is our slogan,” Welsh explained. “It reflects the idea that much of our business is from clients we have worked with in the past. They trusted us to select the right trade contractors for their project, therefore, they also trust our industry knowledge to bring the most capable and experienced architects and engineers into the team.” Starting out on the civil engineering side of the business, Welsh was always intrigued by the engineering and architectural components of the construction process. “I could have focused on the engineering side of the business, but an early job opportunity set my course towards being a general contractor,” he said. ⊲

Going to School on Design-Build IT WAS BUILDING SCHOOLS IN WEST PALM BEACH WHERE WELSH HONED HIS DESIGNBUILD SKILLS. In fact, he was awarded
the first design-build contract on a pilot program the school system launched to utilize this methodology. The project and the program were highly successful, which led to several school projects in that region. “We were one of two contractors that received multiple award contracts,” which meant one contract for multiple projects. Calvary Chapel in Melbourne and Viera, along with the Brevard County School Board facility became prominent examples for Welsh in the local market. Currently they are finalizing plans on a new school they will build this summer, as well as doing extensive “facility renewal” projects on numerous schools.
Ocean Club
BRPH, DNA, RZK, and Tsark are architectural firms, and DDC, CEG, TLC and MBV are engineering firms that Welsh has teamed with. Welsh added that sometimes a developer or a company on the design side will approach him about being the general contractor on a project they are pursuing.
Win-Win Scenarios Another reason Welsh has such a broad understanding of this turnkey approach is because he has been in the developer role on a number of large-scale projects. These include condominium developments including Bella Vista in Rockledge and Venetian Village in Melbourne, storage facilities in Cocoa Beach, and Welsh Construction’s new offices on West Eau Gallie Boulevard, half of which is shared with the Shane M. Smith law offices. Matching his company’s experience and expertise with the expertise of other design and engineering firms creates a sweet spot that attracts and keeps clients, both private and public. “Being a single source for clients helps us expedite the whole process. There are many facets of why this works, but perhaps the most important is on the relational side,” he said. Welsh went on to explain how at times there is almost an adversarial relationship between the professions on a project rather than a win-win approach to meeting challenges.
“THE COLLABORATION IN A DESIGN-BUILD APPROACH ENABLES US TO DELIVER TO A CLIENT THE BEST PRODUCT IN THE QUICKEST AMOUNT OF TIME,” WELSH CONCLUDED. ◆ F EBRUARY 2019
KEEPING THE BRAND ICONIC
Eric Frechette & Palm Bay Ford
FOR OVER A CENTURY, FORD IS THE NAME AND THE BRAND MOST ASSOCIATED WITH AMERICAN AUTOMOBILES. Today, Ford’s F-Series line is still the number one seller in the country, the best-selling vehicle in the United States since 1986 and the best-selling pickup since 1977. This, along with the iconic Ford Mustang, which has sold over 10 million since its debut in 1964, has kept the company on the forefront of American automobile evolution.
On the Space Coast, one reason the brand’s popularity has never waned is dealerships like Palm Bay Ford, under the leadership of Eric Frechette, owner and operator. Located just off I-95 on Malabar Road, Palm Bay Ford has been drawing customers from around the region since opening in 1995. Frechette has led the dealership since the fall of 2011.
Making a Difference
In a market where there is so much competition for business, Frechette has differentiated his dealership by offering exceptional customer service — a quality instilled by Frechette, according to Customer Relations Manager Kate Felkey. “He is always present and easily accessible to both staff and customers. If there is a client we can’t satisfy, Eric makes himself personally available to answer questions and provide solutions,” Felkey said. “That really makes a difference with our customers and our personnel.”
Our mission is to serve, advocate and promote as the trusted voice for our business community.
Frechette began his career in automobile sales after four years in the Navy, because, he said, “My father was a salesman and I enjoyed listening to all his interesting stories. From my first day on the job, I fell in love with the business.”

Working his way into management, it was Gary Yeomans (Gary Yeomans Ford Lincoln in Daytona) who served as Frechette’s mentor and eventual business partner when Yeomans offered him the opportunity at Palm Bay Ford. From the start, Frechette’s focus was clear: “HAPPY EMPLOYEES MAKE FOR HAPPY CUSTOMERS. TO STAY COMPETITIVE IN THIS BUSINESS YOU NEED TO STAY ON TOP OF ALL THE MOVING PARTS IN ALL DEPARTMENTS,” Frechette said. Remarkably, 90 percent of his current management staff has been with him from the beginning. “I feel employee retention is a key to success,” he explained, adding that he invests time, energy and money in all new employees to ensure their success and, therefore, the success of the dealership. Currently Palm Bay Ford has more employees than any time in their history, and Frechette is making plans for design changes at the facility in the near future. ◆

‘JUST TAKEN OFF’
The growth of Prime One Insurance can be summarized in this sequence of words: EDUCATE THEN PROTECT. Paul Weber will immediately point out that Prime One Insurance in Indialantic is an independent agency for property and casualty coverage, encompassing both residential and commercial needs throughout the region and Florida. Weber, though, prefers to use the term “advisor.”
“Our focus is on educating the public,” he says without hesitation. “Does anybody want to deal with insurance? No, until you need it. We’re always trying to educate and advise our customers.”
One example: cyber liability. SPACE COAST B US INE S S
“Ask me a year ago and it wasn’t as prevalent,” Weber says, noting that potential liability extends to both people in their homes as well as company owners. He cites a client’s recent data-breach situation where sensitive information was stolen through computer hacking. The business nearly was ruined, with insurance ultimately coming to the rescue with computer forensics and program cleanup and assorted other related assistance. “This is your business, and this is your livelihood. What would happen if ‘XYZ’ came out?” Weber asks, rhetorically. “If you’re price-driven,” Weber adds, “you’re a commodity.”
Weber should know. The agency manager of commercial accounts, who also serves as chief operating officer, Weber began his insurance career more than 30 years ago in Brevard County. Through the years, he has become known for expert product knowledge along with a personal touch — that advisor role. Further, Weber is a native of Melbourne, making the agency’s involvement in the community, such as with the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, a natural.
“Our involvement in the chamber is about getting more entrenched in the community and giving back. The thought of helping to boost the economy is great for everybody,” he explains. And it’s an economy that is literally taking flight, Weber says. He points to the rebirth taking place at Kennedy Space Center. His words: “I think we’re into another golden era of that technology. …this is a great center of influence and a great place to be.” Not coincidentally, now in its third full year, Prime One Insurance has “just taken off,” Weber says. To maximize the agency’s own potential, there is help, most notably in the form of more than 100 years of collective leadership experience. Agency President Michael Sapourn, Esq., has spent his entire career in and around the insurance business. In addition to being an attorney, Sapourn holds designations as a certified insurance counselor and certified risk manager — nationally recognized expertise taught by the National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research. Sapourn teaches CIC courses through the United States, too, and is hired by other attorneys as an insurance expert. Another principal is Mike Hoagland, senior vice president, who has been in the property and casualty insurance industry for the past 45 years. According to Weber, the experience and the approach add up to an agency that is right at home servicing a community it has shared for decades.
“I couldn’t be prouder,” Weber says. “I’ve seen the ups and downs of our economic turns, especially with the space center. …Being part of what this community has accomplished has just been unreal.” ◆

Walmart’s new distribution facility in Cocoa is expected to spread many economic benefits.
WHEN THE STATE’S TOP PROMOTER OF BUSINESS GROWTH JOINS REGIONAL LEADERS OF ECONOMIC D E V E L O P M E N T, I T ’ S TYPICALLY A VERY BIG DEAL WITH MAJOR IMPACTS. In August, that’s exactly what happened when then-Florida Gov. Rick Scott stood alongside Phil Hayes, chair of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, and others to officially announce the opening of Walmart’s $145 million grocery distribution center in Cocoa. A project that was first announced in July 2017, and required numerous strategic moves in a competition among several communities, had come to fruition. With the opening, Walmart added its 46th such center in an ever-expanding national distribution network, and its fourth in Florida. The center supports Walmart supercenters and neighborhood markets, with workers preparing thousands of refrigerated food containers and other items daily and trucking them to the retailer's stores across Florida. Meanwhile, Cocoa gained much more than a sprawling warehouse. Instead, according to Hayes, the result is a “significant economic contribution locally, while further diversifying our industry base.”

• 3.5 million individual bananas can be held at one time within the 16 banana rooms. Yet, the most impactful tally is likely this: wages for full-time hourly workers start at $16.05 per hour and will reach $19.55 per hour over a two-and-a-half-year progression, according to Walmart. Currently, there are approximately 400 employees, or “associates,” as Walmart calls them. Among the jobs are equipment operators, freight handlers, managers, quality control and maintenance workers. Hiring fairs were first held last spring. In addition, the center’s location on State Road 524 near Interstate 95 puts a stamp on an area that is poised for more strong growth. Cocoa City Manager John Titkanich has called S.R. 524 “one of the primary growth corridors for the city.” Further, Walmart owns another 125 acres east of the center, which could be used for expansion or be turned into land for light industrial/warehouse, commercial and office development. So, in the end Walmart has a shiny new center — actually a building colored bleach white. And Cocoa has something to build around for future economic development.
A VERY BIG DEAL, INDEED. ◆

STRONG GROWTH STREAMLINED
APPROACH Atlantic Southern Paving and Sealcoating is Invested in Central Florida By Carrie Stevenson
T W E N T Y- F I V E
years ago, Atlantic Southern Paving and Sealcoating Founder Mickey Curry decided to take the business he’d built from the back of a pickup truck and make it a bit more official. The south Florida company was founded in 1992 and has experienced strong growth year over year, particularly with its expansion into locations in the western and central regions of the state.
SPACE COAST B US INE S S
For Business Development Manager Gordon Young, the last seven years have been exciting.
“When I started in 2012, we had around 50 employees, and today we are over 125,” he says.
“The Curry family has built it up as a family business centered on excellent service, increasing efficiencies for competitive pricing, and treating our customers and employees the right way. With those principles, we’ve more than doubled our labor force and expanded through the state in the last seven years.”
That expansion was largely driven by loyal customers in the south Florida region, Young says. “The biggest driver of our growth is the strength of those relationships with property managers for apartment complexes or homeowners’ associations,” he explains. “Most of our clients manage a lot of properties, and we are working on large parking lots or entire communities wanting their roads redone. Many of these companies and organizations in south Florida have locations in Orlando, Naples, and central Florida as well, so it was a natural progression to see if those areas could use our services too.” And while the Atlantic Southern Paving and Sealcoating name is new in Brevard County, this isn’t the company’s first experience on the Space Coast. “About ten years ago, we purchased Palm Shores Paving, which had been in business in the area for 20 years,” Young explains. “Rather than rebrand, we just kept the
name and operated that location until closing in 2015. Our new location, opened in June 2018, benefits from the focus on analytics that makes Atlantic Southern Paving and Sealcoating efficient and competitive. But we do have a history and an established client base in Brevard.” Putting down roots in Titusville and getting Atlantic Southern Paving and Sealcoating involved in the Titusville Chamber of Commerce has been a natural fit for Young as well, whose wife has lived in Titusville for 15 years. “The Chamber of Commerce has been great at keeping me informed about sponsorship opportunities and other ways to get involved in the community,” he explains.
“We want Atlantic Southern Paving and Sealcoating to be active supporters of events like Taste of Titusville, because it’s vital to invest in the communities we serve.” ◆

A Legacy of
Preparing for Opportunity
“I was a native Floridian, and with advances I observed in mosquito control and the use of air conditioning, I knew the state was poised to grow and development captured my interests,” Sutton said.
Fred Sutton
Sutton Properties
There are many who ride the crest of an area’s growth and development. Then there are those rare individuals who actually help create the waves. These outliers usually follow a specific pattern. They prepare for opportunities, engage in rigorous due diligence and then take the risks inherent in moving something from potential to reality. This is a description of Fred Sutton, who, for almost 50 years, has helped shape south Brevard into a diverse and leading-edge economy. His properties like Leonardo/DRS, a 270,000-squarefoot manufacturing /office/warehouse complex, and the 55,000-square-foot ALSTOM (formerly Thales/LiveTV) office building, both in Melbourne, and
SPACE COAST B US INE S S
the 220,000-square-foot Renaissance Place project in Palm Bay are examples of the mark he has made on the area. Not to mention, he is also one of the county’s most generous philanthropists. Like many entrepreneurs, the inclination to see and seize opportunities came early in life. Sutton turned a passion for numismatics (coin collecting) into a highly profitable venture, which financed his college education. “I had my father take me to the bank where I would buy bags of pennies. Then I would sift through them, identifying collectables, which I, in turn, sold. A roll of 50 pennies went for up to $500,” he recalled. It sounded a little like an innovative take on panning for gold.
His education included an undergraduate degree from David Lipscomb University in Tennessee and an MBA in finance from the University of Georgia, where he also taught. But it was his time at the largest architectural, engineering and planning firm in the southeast, Reynolds, Smith & Hills, that solidified his developmental skills and direction. “I had the opportunity to work with some of the most brilliant people in the industry, including Roy Disney,” he said. Sutton worked on the original attendance projections for Walt Disney World. After studying Disneyland in Anaheim, they did visitor estimates for the Florida park to determine the type and number of hotel rooms needed on site. “It was a very successful relationship that led to a number of projects with Disney,” he said. With the same analytical skills he used on projects for Disney and the ITT/Levitt community of Palm Coast, he began evaluating the potential of south Brevard. In 1972, he launched Sutton Properties. At the time, land was inexpensive and Harris Corporation was growing; six years later they would move their headquarters to Melbourne.

“I will say now, what I learned then: you don’t have to have money; there are people who have the money who are looking for those with the experience and expertise to invest it.” – Fred Sutton
*
Risk and Reward
Starting with money he borrowed from friends and family, Sutton began what today has grown into more than 1 million square feet of commercial real estate holdings. “When we started, we had no money, but I will say now, what I learned then: you don’t have to have money; there are people who have the money who are looking for those with the experience and expertise to invest it,” he shared. With an aversion to management by committee, Sutton is that rare combination of bold risk taker and detailed risk analyzer. “Today we only do longer term leases, 10 years or more, with companies that are credit tenants,” he said. However, when he first worked with DRS, they were relatively small. Now they have been acquired by Leonardo, the Italian aerospace firm that is as large as L3 Harris Technologies. Having weathered the savings and loan crisis, the Great Recession and more than one venture that didn’t go as planned, Sutton has some sage advice for a new generation of aspiring developers. “First, I would recommend studying at a university that has a good real estate department, like UF or FSU, with an emphasis on finance. Second, get experience with a large development company and, finally,
don’t let money be a limiting factor — you need knowledge.” ◆

Battling Autism
WHEN REECE SCOTT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM EARLY IN LIFE, THERE WAS LITTLE INFORMATION ON HOW TO TREAT HIS CONDITION.
The Scott Center for Autism Treatment at Florida Institute of Technology is using the latest research to treat children with autism and other related disorders. By Jack Roth 114 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
Reece’s personal persistence, great teachers and skilled therapists enabled him to overcome many of the challenges associated with the disorder. In fact, Reece graduated from Georgetown University and went on to pursue a master's degree in modern Japanese studies at the University of Oxford in England. His parents, Edward and Cheryl, realized early intervention and effective treatment were the key to giving children the best chance of being happy, independently living adults. As a result of this positive outcome, Edward and Cheryl decided to fund the creation of the Scott Center for Autism Treatment in 2009. Since then, parents and children from around the world
have come to the Scott Center for the most advanced treatment methods available.
Ranked among the best in the world for its research contributions to the field of behavioral analysis, the Scott Center for Autism Treatment pursues a three-fold mission of clinical service, research and training. As an integrated component of Florida Tech’s School of Psychology and Applied Behavior, graduate students receive training and supervision from doctoral-level faculty, preparing them for a future as professionals who will continue to work to improve the lives of individuals and their families.
“The autism numbers are alarming, so it’s imperative we place an emphasis on early intervention services, training and research,” said Courtenay Porter, director of external relations. “Providing effective therapy early is one of our main goals.”
IF YOU’VE MET ONE CHILD ON THE SPECTRUM, YOU’VE MET ONE CHILD ON THE SPECTRUM. ALL TREATMENT AT THE SCOTT CENTER IS EXTREMELY PERSONALIZED, AND EACH CHILD’S PROGRAM IS TRACKED AND MEASURED.
The autism numbers Porter refers to are indeed alarming.
ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC), IN 2018 1 IN 59 CHILDREN WERE DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM.
Research has shown that behavior and communication approaches that help children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are those that provide structure, direction and organization for the child in addition to family participation. The Scott Center implements treatment based on the science of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), which encourages positive behaviors and discourages negative ones in order to improve a variety of life skills. “Through ABA, we want to increase positive behaviors and decrease or eliminate unwanted behaviors such as tantrums and self-harm,” explained Porter. “Autism is idiosyncratic,
– Courtenay Porter
so observing children and coming up with a functional assessment for each individual is critical. We have observation rooms to see what behaviors are triggered. The spectrum is broad, and every child is different.”
The Scott Center is a 22,000-sq.-ft. treatment and research facility that includes observation rooms, small group exposure rooms, large group/classroom-style rooms, a pediatric feeding program center, severe behavior therapy rooms, and a toilet training room.
“It’s great we have an entire facility dedicated to not only autism research and treatment, but also other counseling resources,” said Porter. “Our entire second floor is dedicated to community psychological services, including individual, couple and group counseling, plus family therapy. For those dealing with a special needs child, it’s very challenging, so it’s important for the entire family to have resources at their disposal.” She concluded: “Right now, our goal is to reach and help as many children as possible. We also want to do it as early in the development of each child as possible because this results in a more positive trajectory in the child’s life.” ◆
AN EVENING OF HOPE The Scott Center’s annual fundraiser will take place on February 16, 2019. If you’re interested in becoming a sponsor for the event, go to

“MY MOTHER ALWAYS WANTED TO HAVE A COZY UPSCALE RESTAURANT FOR GUESTS TO DINE IN,” SAID JUTTA KRAUSE, GENERAL MANAGER. “MOST IMPORTANTLY, SHE WANTED TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL AT HOME WHEN DINING, AND WE WERE ABLE TO FIND THE PERFECT SPOT RIGHT HERE IN COCOA BEACH.” As general manager, Krause’s job entails just about everything and anything, and she loves every aspect of it. “By doing all the little things this job requires, it gives customers a memorable experience we hope they remember for a long time,” she explained. “And our greatest hope is that they share these experiences with their friends and families.” Open for dinner nightly from 5 to 10 p.m., Gregory's offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The décor exhibits attractive rustic coquina walls that also line the cocktail bar's backdrop, elegantly set tables and comfortable booths. Gregory's menu features a wide variety of popular entrees. It all starts with a freshly baked mini loaf of bread that arrives with your appetizer or salad. Among the creative appetizers are Lobsteraki, five pieces of Maine lobster with water chestnuts in bacon topped with teriyaki sauce; Escargot Maison, six snails housed in mushroom caps sautéed in garlic sauce; and Thai chicken dumplings, homemade Asian dumplings filled with chicken, shiitake mushrooms and ginger, panfried with sweet chile sauce and a hint of spice.
“Chef Dennis came highly recommended,” asserted Krause. “He’s extremely well rounded and provides wonderful creations for our guests to enjoy.” If you're a beef lover, you can choose between New York strip, Delmonico or porterhouse cuts; all can be served with a variety of hand-made sauces, including the mushroom and garlic wine sauce.
“WE ONLY PROVIDE THE FRESHEST AND BEST INGREDIENTS IN EVERY ONE OF OUR DISHES,” SAID KRAUSE. “WHEN IT COMES TO ASSESSING GREAT FOOD, ESPECIALLY STEAK AND SEAFOOD, ONLY THE BEST QUALITY WILL STAND UP TO SCRUTINY.”

House specialties include steak au poivre, an 8-ounce filet mignon finished with a classic green peppercorn sauce; steak cognac, a 12-ounce certified Angus beef top sirloin covered with a cognac mushroom sauce; surf & turf, an 8-ounce Caribbean lobster tail and 8-ounce choice filet mignon served with béarnaise sauce; steak Diane, grilled medallions of choice beef tenderloin topped with a Dijon brandy mushroom sauce; and steak tournedos Oscar, grilled medallions of beef tenderloin topped with crabmeat stuffing, asparagus and hollandaise sauce.

“WE’VE CREATED A WONDERFUL ATMOSPHERE HERE FOR BOTH OUR CUSTOMERS AND STAFF MEMBERS, AND THAT’S WHAT WE SET OUT TO DO.” ◆

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.

THEQuestion BIG
Whether you’re a future bride anticipating a glorious engagement proposal or a future groom eagerly brainstorming a memorable moment, it’s crucial to remember the dos and don’ts throughout the planning process.
The Dos First Kiss. Revisit some of the earlier moments that sparked the romance. Go to the initial place where it all started, first date spot, first kiss, and other special romantic locations or moments. Sentimental Location. An engagement proposal is something you both will remember forever. That’s why it’s important to choose a destination to visit in the future. In other words, the corner Italian restaurant you have in mind may turn into a pawn shop someday. So, think outside of the box on where to go. Surprise, Surprise. If you really want to pull off a performance and stun your girl by taking the next step in the relationship, it helps to have a decoy. She’ll never see the question coming if you show up to a gathering nonchalantly with out-of-town family and friends, where the guests are the surprise in her eyes, not a proposal on the horizon.
The Don’ts Creative hiccups. As creative as it sounds to put that beauty of a rock in a fancy dessert, don’t. Not only could you risk an emergency room trip, but your expensive purchase is now a chocolate covered mess. Know the person. Not everyone likes to be in the spotlight. Make sure you know the person and don’t pop the question at your favorite team’s football halftime and she embarrassingly accepts the offer. Stay on dry land. Sure, you both love the water and boating on the Space Coast, but resist the urge. One tiny bump or slip and say goodbye to that ring forever. ◆ 128 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G
