Letter from the

EDITOR Hi everyone,

The holidays are over and as many of us reflect on the previous year, various things come to mind: Successes, failures, life-changing moments, and so on. This retrospective mindset tends to kick off our New Year’s resolution checklist, doesn’t it? Fast forward a bit and you find yourself approaching the end of the year, often empty handed since your goals fell by the wayside and nothing but a list of chicken scratch is left to decipher. While this realization has the potential to pose as a learning opportunity for future experiences, there’s also something else to consider. Why make New Year’s resolutions? Instead, make a lifestyle change. Yes, goals are key to reaching our destination and milestones help us stay on track. However, the stigma of making these “resolutions” has gotten a bad rap over the years since most people are, after all, human, and struggle to keep them. Consider this. Take a step back and think of this process as a long-term, lifestyle change. For instance, instead of going on a sugar-free diet because it’s trending, consider its longterm benefits and find ways that help keep its longevity (tasty recipes options, having more energy, and so on). Instead of training for the upcoming 5K run, plan to strengthen your physical health to handle several other races to follow. You catch the drift. Before you know it, a habit forms and a better quality of life is achieved. After all, who doesn’t want that?

Balance Your Life This Year By Judy Piersall

WELL, IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN. A NEW YEAR, A NEW BEGINNING, A CLEAN SLATE; THE DESCRIPTIONS ARE ENDLESS. We all like things that are new, don’t we? As millions are making resolutions, just remember, perfection is unattainable. That’s why the strive for perfection is an exercise in futility. Instead, strive to be the best you can possibly be, understanding that you will never be perfect. In this day of extremes — extreme sports, extreme endeavors, extreme workouts — the list goes on — it honestly makes me chuckle because what’s the point? If you are one of those people, accept my apology, but if you’re on the extreme train, you’re obsessed. And obsession often falls short. 16 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

THE KEY TO A HAPPY LIFE, IN MY OPINION, IS BALANCE. AND SIMPLICITY. Ever heard of KISS? Not the rock group, but the acronym “Keep it simple, stupid.” Trust me, I know it’s hard when you’re raising a family to keep things simple and not get caught up in all the madness that comes with it. The merry go round of being a mom, a working mom, a wife, a volunteer, a shuttle driver, involved in the community, while also trying to make time for yourself is dizzying and frustrating. My three children are grown now, but they would tell you that there was always a hot breakfast for them every morning before school. My husband and I made sure of that. Most days we were up at the crack of dawn to accomplish it. Whatever it took. They would also tell you that either my husband or I were always at their functions whether in town or out. My point is if you’re going to be extreme about something, be extreme about your family. After all, what possible benefits are there to being “all that” everywhere else if you’re not there for your family?

MY BEST NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION THAT BECAME A HABIT WAS LEARNING TO SAY “NO.” Be very selective about how and where you spend your time. It’s a very liberating experience, and while you may feel guilty in the beginning, over time that will go away, and it will become a honed habit. Everyone always claims to be “so busy.” But ask yourself: “What am I busy doing?” The answers may surprise you. Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy 2019!

Until next time, here’s to healthy living, and remember...

Top Five Ways to Boost Your Workout

By Landon Morley

Warm-up / Cool-down Without a proper warm-up and cool-down regimen, you risk injury, muscle soreness and not gaining as much from your workout as you could have. For warming up, be sure to stretch all your major muscle groups for 10-15 minutes as your heart rate increases. For cool-down, stretch slowly for 15-20 minutes as your heart rate decreases.

Proper Hydration Most individuals are walking around dehydrated, and they do not even know it. By drinking cold water, you can boost your metabolism by 10-30 percent for up to an hour. Without sufficient water supply, the cells in your body do not properly operate, which can lead to crash or injury.

18 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

High Intensity The best way to burn fat, build muscle and boost your metabolism for hours afterward is the HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) system. Perform 20 minutes of exercises like sprints, jumping jacks and burpees as hard as you can do them, coupled with brief resting periods lasting no longer than 120 seconds.

Happiness is a

Healthy Good Nutrition A major saying in the fitness industry is “Abs are built in the kitchen, and you can’t out-train a bad diet.” Many people make the mistake of not eating all day and working out to lose weight. This is dangerous! You may get light-headed, dizzy, nauseous, and you risk severely hurting yourself if working with heavy equipment. Make sure you eat before working out, and remember, eating more protein will burn more calories than not eating at all.

Two simple steps

you can take to better care for yourself in 2019: 1. Incorporate a Morning Routine Starting your day with uninterrupted time before the rest of the world has awoken can make even the most dreaded day a little more bearable. Any great morning routine starts with a good skincare regimen. There is nothing that will wake you up more than a splash of water to the face and some TLC! Your skin will thank you for it!

Longer Cruises From Port Canaveral? They’re Here! With Sherry Laskin

CRUISING FROM PORT CANAVERAL… THERE’S MORE TO EXPLORE THAN JUST THE BAHAMAS.

28 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

I HAVE ALWAYS ENVIED PEOPLE WHO LIVE NEAR PORT EVERGLADES IN FORT LAUDERDALE OR PORTMIAMI IN MIAMI FOR ONE REASON: BOUNDLESS OPTIONS FOR A CRUISE. For years, if you wanted more than the usual three-, four- or sevennight cruise to the Bahamas or the Caribbean, you had to endure a nearly four-hour hectic highway drive to South Florida via Interstate 95. Finally, the tide is turning. It is no longer necessary to drive to South Florida to voyage far and wide. Port Canaveral is growing by leaps and bounds, and so are cruise ships and itinerary choices from the Space Coast. Longer cruises mean new, exciting places to discover, local foods to taste and stunning sunsets to admire.

SPAIN

PORTUGAL

To the Caribbean and Beyond This year brings a bevy of longer cruises from Port Canaveral that range from eight to 15 nights. Hop on board Carnival, Norwegian or Disney for tropical escapes at less crowded Southern Caribbean ports — places that simply cannot be reached on your typical seven-night cruise. Europe without flying? Book a stateroom on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas or Norwegian’s recently refurbished Norwegian Epic. You can cruise from the Space Coast straight over to Barcelona, Spain on 14- and 15-night cruises, respectively.

PANAMA

While Oasis of the Seas’ April 21, 2019 departure will visit only three ports (two of which are Eastern Caribbean), book passage on Norwegian Epic departing one week later and spend time in two ports in Portugal and a whopping four Spanish ports before docking in Barcelona. Last but not least, Disney Wonder offers a 14-night, full Panama Canal transit from here to San Diego with some wonderful port calls en route. Those of us lucky enough to live on the Space Coast can finally plan that longer cruise without having to trek to South Florida. We have come a long way since the Big Red Boat called Port Canaveral its home. ◆ JANUA RY 2019 : 29

FROM THE GROUND UP Fia’s Fresh Meals By Mallorie Ann Ingram

As individuals on the Space Coast welcome the new year, getting fit and healthy is top of mind. The word is out and health-conscious crowds are taking advantage of Fia’s Fresh Meals. For the owner and founder, Chris Paladino, this concept and passion came naturally. ⊲

JANUA RY 2019 : 35

HOW IT WORKS ⊲

Register online at www.FiasFreshMeals.com or use their free mobile app.

Choose your meals for the week to be picked up the following Monday.

There are 145 pickup locations in Florida to choose from, and the company is now shipping to customers nationwide.

Refrigerated trucks deliver every Monday to the pickup locations.

Customers then have the convenience to place orders at locations closest to their homes or businesses.

No contracts, no minimums, no maximums.

Retail locations also carry various vitamin lines and protein supplements.

Meals stay fresh for up to 30 days in refrigerated and much longer if frozen due to vacuum sealed containers.

Department of Agriculture, USDA approved and inspected.

“I've always been really into health and fitness,” Paladino said. “I have a background in law, but it really wasn’t my passion, and my family has been in the restaurant business for a long time, so it was kind of in my blood.” Paladino ended up going back to school to study nutrition and exercise, while maintaining a thriving restaurant operation. In fact, he managed several on the Space Coast for many years, but he also recognized the potential in the health and fitness industry. “I saw there was a niche nobody was filling — healthy pre-made meals available weekly for customers around the area and through the gyms I visited,” he said. “I found some part-time guys who would help me cook

the meals and bring to the gyms to sample. From there, it just spread like wildfire, and I ended up having to sell my restaurant last year because this business overtook it.” Paladino explains the bulk of his business is not just targeted toward athletes, but all those, young and older, seeking convenience with a healthconscious focus. The concept is simple: offer pre-made, fresh meals on a weekly basis for online purchase or in store locations.

“We have different types of options, such as the Keto diet, which is high fat, Paleo, meals for the athletic crowd, and more,” Paladino said. ⊲

ACAI BOWLS Fia’s Fresh Meals offers a self-serve Acai bar. The acai bowl has a sorbet or ice cream type consistency and is made from the superfood, acai fruit. The acai fruit is filled with antioxidants and other nutrients making this a healthy meal option. The selfserve acai bowl bar includes a variety of tasty toppings ranging from sliced fruits to granola to enjoy.

WHAT SETS FIA’S FRESH MEALS APART FROM THE REST? First, the price point. Meals start at $8. Everything is organic, USDA certified and Department of Agriculture inspected. Many other meal companies don't claim any of this because they can't legally. Second, the flexible menu options. There are 25 to 35 different options weekly, and the menu is never the same, changing every week.

38 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

Third, it is not a meal plan but a meal company. Fia’s Fresh Meals has the freedom of choice. Customers can go online. There’s no plan, no minimum and no maximum. Customers have the control. “These three things are the most important aspects that set us apart from the rest,” Paladino explained.

“We're local, we're fresh and the food is vacuum sealed.” ◆

Fit & Healthy If you enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle, the Space Coast is the place for you. With any number of both outdoor and indoor activities waiting just outside your front door, the region offers something for everyone ‌ and it also offers a variety of local establishments where you can enjoy healthy food options. We decided to pair some heart-healthy activities with healthy dining places you can visit afterwards to enjoy a healthy meal.

TITUSVILLE Fit:

The Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville is considered one of the best birding (and hiking) trails in the region. A beautiful 92-acre regional park built around preserved wetlands and lakes with walking bridges connected to 3 miles of paved walking trails, Chain of Lakes Park is the perfect place to hike and look for wood storks, glossy ibis, cattle egrets, mottled ducks, laughing gulls and Forster’s terns. Bald eagles fly over occasionally, and ospreys are a common sight as well.

Healthy:

Once you’ve gotten your blood flowing by hiking and bird watching, visit Sunrise Whole Grain Bakery and Coffee Shop, a family business and hot gathering place to relax and gather with friends (a local running club meets here regularly). Sunrise bakes muffins, cookies, scones and cinnamon rolls – mostly from scratch. Bread is made from 100 percent whole wheat with no additives, and flavored using pure Florida honey. Most of the bread contains no preservatives, fats or oils. Gluten-free eaters also have options. Craving something to cool off after your long hike? Order a smoothie or iced blended coffee drink.

Rockledge Fit:

Sky Zone Trampoline Park is one of those places where, after you’ve been there once, you want to go back to every day of the week. With attractions such as Ultimate Dodgeball, Freeclimb, Warrior Course, SkySlam, Freestyle Jump, Foam Zone, SkyJoust, SkyHoops and SkyLadder, Sky Zone has taken the concept of trampoline fun to a whole new level. The amount and level of the exercise you get is up to you, but suffice to say if you want to, you will leave Sky Zone Trampoline Park physically spent.

Healthy:

Having enjoyed your trampoline bliss, now is the time to enjoy a good, healthy meal to fuel your depleted body. Peace in the Garden Café serves breakfast and lunch and lives by the motto: He who has health has hope, and he who has hope has everything! The family-run café serves meat, vegan and vegetarian dishes, including salsa, chips, hummus, wraps, bowls, soups and salads. The breakfast menu is loaded with vegan and gluten-free choices.

COCOA BEACH Fit:

Whether on the beach, on the pier or on one of the many bike paths in the area, Cocoa Beach is a great place for a bike ride. Bring your own bike or rent one from one of several places, including Matt’s Bicycle Center, AIA Beach Rentals & Outdoor Center, Village Cycle Shoppe, Cocoa Beach Cruisers, Cocoa Beach Surf company and many more. With so much to do and see in Cocoa Beach, you can plan an entire day around a calorie-burning bike ride.

Healthy:

So you’ve been biking for a while and have worked up a mighty thirst (and hunger). Juice N Java Café is a great place to get fresh-roasted coffee and healthy, fresh, farmto-table menu options inspired from around the world. For healthy options, check out the fruit smoothies, salads and artisan cheese trays. For a healthy, sweet snack, try the chocolate-covered strawberries. Sandwiches come with a variety of bread options to meet your dietary needs or culinary cravings. Juice N Java also offers vegetarian options.

MELBOURNE Fit:

When it comes to physical fitness activities, rock climbing is at the top of the mountain (no pun intended). Ascending an outdoor or indoor rock wall requires a large amount of physical strength and endurance. Although not often thought of as a common form of cardio, ascending walls is a sure way to get your heart pumping, similar to climbing stairs or jogging. A one-hour climb session can burn well over 700 calories. We may not have mountains to climb on the Space Coast, but there is On The Edge Rock Climbing, an indoor facility that offers a variety of rock climbing challenges for both beginners and experts.

Healthy:

After two hours of climbing and 1,400 calories burned, it’s definitely time to eat! Located in downtown Melbourne, Zushi Asian Fresh and Healthy Downtown offers healthy, fresh sushi and Thai food. The menu has more than 100 different Thai options and unique sushi rolls, and many ingredients come straight from the owner's garden. Zushi Asian walks the healthy walk, promoting local fitness centers, and offers health tips on its social media pages.

JANUA RY 2019 : 45

PALM BAY Fit:

Standup paddleboarding has become a popular recreational activity, and there’s a good reason for that. It improves balance, provides a full-body workout, reduces stress, increases overall strength, provides a great cardio workout, improves endurance, allows you to connect to nature, is low impact and useful in rehabilitation injuries. Palm Bay offers a variety of paddleboarding experiences due to its proximity to the St. Johns River, Sawgrass Lake, Indian River Lagoon, and Turkey Creek Sanctuary. 46 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

Healthy:

After your exhilarating paddleboarding workout, head over to VeggieLand Juice Bar and Whole Food, where you can enjoy rice and peas, veggie soup, calla and cabbage, kumit, quinoa and all natural green and fruit juices. Vegan options are available, and all smoothies are sugar and dairy free.

Best Practices to Bring Order to Your Financial Life From Thomas P. Flavin, CPA Flavin Nooney & Person CPAs and Advisors

THE START OF THE NEW YEAR IS A NATURAL TIME TO EVALUATE YOUR FINANCES AND RESOLVE TO MAKE SOME POSITIVE CHANGES. To simplify the process, consider five “Must Do” items unapologetically old school — tried and true maxims that can give you peace of mind and put you on the path to prosperity in 2019.

Must Doʼs 1

Revisit and Update Your Financial Plan.

If you do not have a financial plan, seek out the assistance of a good financial planner and develop one. Why? Because a financial plan is an absolute necessity. All investment decisions flow from the plan. It is the key document that answers three basic questions: Who is the money for? What is the money for? When will the money be needed? If you have not answered these three questions in some detail, how can you or a financial advisor make intelligent decisions about your investment portfolio? Based on the answers to these questions, a good financial advisor will help determine how much you should be saving every month and year, and what investment mix is appropriate for you.

2

Rebalance Your Investment Accounts.

Once you have developed your financial plan, balance (or rebalance) your investment portfolio and retirement accounts based on it. Maintaining a welldiversified portfolio will go a long way in helping achieve your financial goals. Over longer periods of time, different segments of the market may outperform, causing some investment sectors to become overweight in your portfolio. Rebalancing your portfolio every so often — perhaps annually—– will ensure it stays diversified.

3

Update Your Estate Planning.

Consider the need to update your estate planning documents. If it has been a while since you have looked at your will — or if, God forbid, you do not have one — spend an hour with an attorney who specializes in estate and probate matters and determine what is needed to ensure your wishes are met after you are gone.

4

Consolidate Old Retirement Accounts.

Consolidate your old 401(k)s from previous employers into your current 401(k) (if your plan allows) or into an IRA. 401(k)s can be instrumental in saving for retirement, but they often include administration expenses and more expensive share classes than those available in IRAs. Consolidating your old accounts can reduce those expenses. Additionally, old 401(k)s may have been set up using allocations that are no longer appropriate for you, and 401(k) investments are often limited to just a few options provided by the plan provider. Rolling your old 401(k) into an IRA at a brokerage firm will open up thousands of investment options.

5

Stick to Your Plan.

Develop your plan and stick to it. Do not try to “time the markets.” Since the end of WWII, there have been 14 bear market declines. The average decline (as measured by the S&P 500) was 30.7 percent, and the average duration of each decline was 14.5 months. Yet, as of October 2018, at over 2600, the S&P 500 is more than 191 times higher than its lowest close in 1949. When you include the reinvestment of dividends and adjust for inflation, that works out to an average annual return of approximately seven percent since 1946. Do not get spooked by short-term trends and current events. Focus on the long term. JANUA RY 2019 : 67

Where Art & Science Meet Your Smile

Wickham Dental Care and Implant Preserve

T

here is no greater signature of self-worth and confidence than a healthy, wellproportioned smile. Diverse facial features contribute to defining beauty, but without the fitting smile, real beauty is significantly diluted. The smile, an often underestimated pocket of power, has magnetic qualities, turns heads, influences optimism and reflects esteem in the mirror. Possessing one bespeaks success and has been counted as the single-most valuable tool in acquiring and retaining a rewarding business position.

68 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

Dr. Sadesh Kumar

Very few people are born with a flawless dentition, but today the dental profession is equipped with all of the tools to create a spectacular smile for every face. There are several gentle options for whitening teeth or for aesthetically maintaining natural smiles, but with the evolution of dental implant therapies and digital smile design, entire arches of teeth can be replaced in as little as three visits to the dentist. Testimonials from women and men of all ages attest to the life-changing impact of transforming a broken smile into a sparkling, alluring and dashingly healthy one. Psychologically, acquiring a smile can be a transfiguration, energizing the spirit and opening doors to newfound self-assurance. Physically though, the benefits of a healthy smile are infinite. Maintaining healthy bone in the mouth significantly affects one’s profile, therefore supporting anti-aging more profoundly than anything that comes in a jar or from an injectable. With diligent dental maintenance, smiles do not age and can be the most viable cling to youth available to mankind. Often, they are the best substitute for a face lift.

SMILES HAVE A WAY OF SPEAKING TO THE WORLD WITHOUT SAYING A SINGLE WORD. And smiles can be detected even without visible contact. They are strong enough to be heard in a phone conversation, as ownership of a vibrant one elevates personal charisma enough to be detected in the voice. It is the mysterious, magical, unspoken quality that has no challenger. Dr. Sadesh Kumar, who has a welcoming smile of his own, understands the profound effect a great smile can have in a person’s life. He has dedicated his professional life to acquiring the knowledge and skills required to provide patients with smiles that are not only pristinely healthy, but are suited to each individual patient’s face, personality and expectation. The old and feared fable that a visit to the dentist meant nasty pain and no reward is no longer valid. Dental professionals have non-invasive solutions, quick fixes and futuristic technology involving computers, robots and reliable results that make mega-statements. Dentistry is on pace with all medicine to provide solutions that align with “Avatar.” In fact, ask your dentist about “Avadent!” The New Year signals resolutions of all kinds, often pertaining to health and beauty, with the goal of finding a pathway to a better you. Consider a dental consultation and a treatment plan for a smile that will take off 20-plus years, erase some wrinkles, put a “tiger in your tank” and make you the best self, and selfie, you can be. ◆

BreitWerks brings artisanal approach to Porsche rebuilding and restoration.

S

ince 2014, BreitWerks in Suntree has approached Porsche engine rebuilding and restoration work with a combination of surgical precision, an artistic eye for detail, and a belief that these high-performance vehicles are like members of each client’s respective families, with individual personalities and unique needs.

70 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G

This highly-customized approach has grown a passionate client base among Florida families for whom Porsches are not a status symbol, but part of a family legacy. “We do a lot of father-son projects and are about to embark on our first mother-daughter rebuild,” said Jason Breitfeller, owner of BreitWerks, whose lifelong Porsche

passion originated from his father. “People are becoming much more circumspect about which shop they use. Our sweet spot is in the classic Porsches, at least 10 years old, where a client brings it in saying they grew up with the car and it’s fallen into disrepair, but they want it to look like it did when it came out of the showroom in the 1970s or 1980s.”

And with that, each rebuild begins. An average rebuild and restoration can take anywhere from six to 24 months to complete and costs range from $5,000 to $50,000. The time and money are an investment in quality, as Breitfeller’s background in aerospace and defense makes him a perfectionist in just about every aspect of the process.

“EVERYTHING WE DO IS BY HAND,” HE EXPLAINED. “I’LL SPEND HOURS ON ONE PART TRYING TO RESTORE IT SO IT LOOKS AND OPERATES AS WELL AS THE ORIGINAL. AND NOTHING IS PAINTED; IT’S ALL BARE METAL THAT’S MADE TO LOOK LIKE NEW AGAIN.” Once the engine is restored to glory, the cars — all christened by Breitfeller and his apprentice, Jackson, at the beginning and carry their names with them throughout the restoration process — get gorgeous on the outside as well. Working with Platinum Werks Collison Center of Melbourne, the paint and body work for each BreitWerks car is done to perfection. Similarly, all of BreitWerks vendor-partners are nationally and internationally renowned experts in their areas. “All of the machine work gets shipped to guys who’ve been doing this type of stuff since before I was born,” Breitfeller said. “For things we can’t do in our shop, we work with shops in Arizona, California, Washington and Toronto. We work across North America to ensure our clients get the best service possible.” The end result is a car given a new lease on life and a growing list of clients committed to the BreitWerks approach. In the last five years, the shop has grown from 1,000 square feet to 3,000 square feet of space for the engine assembly area; the Porsches in various stages of restoration, and their respective parts stored meticulously in a locker-style area dedicated to each named car. Breitfeller — who runs the shop along with his wife, Kate, and two sons — acknowledged the work is a labor of love. “If I wasn’t working on clients’ cars, I’d be endlessly working on my own,” he admitted. “As long as BreitWerks funds itself, I’m happy to do this work because it’s my passion. “This isn’t a profit-driven business. I try to make each car like a piece of artwork again.” ◆

Rich in History,

Ready for the Future ROCKLEDGE COUNTRY CLUB MAINTAINS ITS OLD FLORIDA CHARM WHILE OPENING ITS DOORS TO BOTH MEMBERS AND THE COMMUNITY.

A

t 101 years old, Rockledge Country Club has only become more beautiful with age, but Central Florida’s first golf and country club has more than just a pretty face. As lifestyles and attitudes have shifted, the club has kept pace, changing its comprehensive variety of membership plans to reflect an increasing desire for flexibility among today’s players. The club greets new members with open arms, and it showcases its hospitality and camaraderie with several seasonal events open to the entire community.

“We believe in making memories for the whole family and are proud to be located in Rockledge,” said General Manager Andrea Beyel. “Honoring and preserving the best of tradition and history, while also being a pioneer in product and service offerings, is what Rockledge Country Club strives to represent.” You may have noticed Rockledge Country Club trending frequently across social media platforms. The staff is dedicated to excellence, and it shows from the course condition, events,

venue offerings and the VUE 18 restaurant. In fact, Rockledge Country Club was the first club in Brevard County to install Diamond zoysia grass greens, touted as the best turf species available for putting greens in the Southeast region today. Another first, the Beyel Ladies Invitational, sold out and had more players participate in 2018 than any other year.

This is Golf! According to Lauryn Countryman, membership director, Rockledge Country Club represents everything a golf country club is supposed to be.

“WE WANTED TO KEEP ALL THE BENEFITS AND ADVANTAGES ONLY A PRIVATE CLUB CAN PROVIDE, WHILE ALSO OFFERING MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS THAT FIT THE LIFESTYLE AND NEEDS OF TODAY’S PLAYER.” she explained. To that end, the club offers an extensive array of membership plans. The Associate Plan, which has a one-time fee of only $100, allows players the opportunity to experience the privileges and differences of “playing private” and paying as you play. “It’s like a test drive… a great way to try us out and see for yourself all the benefits we offer our members,” Countryman asserted. “Whether you’re a ‘frequent flyer,’ weekend player, seasonal or junior player, RCC has a membership to fit your specific needs.”

New Year New You! Holidays are gone

now it's time for you!

Weddings & Events “I am truly passionate about the event industry!" says Event Director Vanessa Lackland. "At Rockledge Country Club, every gathering, from weddings and nonprofit functions, to our own hosted events have a special concept and design. Our team pays close attention to the details, and works very hard, to ensure every client experiences that ‘wow’ moment as they walk into the room. There's nothing more thrilling than knowing that we are making our clients and members both proud and elated. We set the bar high and our goal is to make every event better than the one before. From Resolution to Lifestyle E

veryone is in the New Year’s resolution frame of mind, particularly when it comes to making a “new you.” However, we all know the journey from resolution to realization takes us through a valley where many lose the most important ingredient in a resolution…resolve! Jon Williams, the director of Health First’s Pro-Health & Fitness Centers, has more than 25 years in the fitness field. He commented, “It usually takes six to eight weeks before we actually begin to see results from a health or fitness resolution. That’s why setting realistic, attainable, short- and long-term goals are so important.” Translated, that means setting a goal of completing a local 5K run by April, for most people, is attainable. However, competing in the Iron Man Triathlon this year may be a stretch. Also, people’s goals are different; one may want to get lean and fit, while another may want to lower blood pressure and reduce dependency on medications. Williams, along with Susie Bond, one of Health First’s dietitian/nutritionists, identified four keys to realizing our resolutions:

Four Keys to Realizing our Resolutions: 1. A Strong Desire — Someone once said, “We change when we know enough to want to, or hurt enough to have to.” Williams and Bond both stressed the motivational advantage of “wanting to” versus “having to” in attaining our health and fitness goals.

2. Make a Commitment — The substance of any commitments are the actions they produce. Without simple action steps, usually those commitments become dreams, and we know how long we remember dreams after we wake up.

3. Develop a Habit — According to Bond, it takes 21 days to form a new habit and 66 days for the habit to seem automatic.

4. Do Not Go It Alone – One of the most important factors Bond and Williams saw demonstrated repeatedly at the Pro-Health & Fitness Centers was relationships. People formed relationships with both the staff and other members, which motivated them to stay on target.

Resolutions For Kids

Susie Bond and Jon Williams

“One of the biggest surprises people have when they come to one of our fitness centers is it’s filled with people just like them, not runway models or body builders,” Bond said. “Also, we have so many classes and fitness options people can explore — from aerobics and spinning classes to racquetball and free weights — there’s something for everyone,” Williams added. Both stressed the importance of the process Pro-Health uses to help people clarify their goals and set up a plan reasonable enough to ensure success. “We show people the road to get to where they want to go, which is actually a much broader road than most people imagine,” said Williams. “It’s all about bringing balance into their lives through healthy eating, exercise and behavior changes.” ◆

Many parents wonder how to help their kids make better health and fitness choices. Bond and Williams give two primary suggestions:

1) Many lifestyle solutions for young people have to start with the parents. Planning activities that involve exercise and changing the food choices available in the home can help.

2) Connecting them with a health and fitness professional they like and relate to is essential for long-term results.

A Giant

Contribution to Veterans’ Causes By Carrie Stevenson

GIANT RECREATION WORLD WAS FOUNDED BY DON MCNAMARA IN 1976 with a commitment to providing the personal service of a family-owned and operated dealership, and to date the company has served more than 40,000 customers. But McNamara also believed strongly in giving back to the communities the dealerships served — including Winter Garden, Daytona and Palm Bay — and drew particularly upon his four years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1961-65 while determining how best to contribute to charitable causes. That led to the partnership between Giant Recreation World and several veteran’s charities, especially the National Homeless Veterans Support organization. “MY DAD INSTILLED IN US AN APPRECIATION OF THOSE WHO SERVED IN COMBAT AND A COMMITMENT TO SUPPORTING OUR VETERANS TODAY AND INTO THE FUTURE,” explained Larry McNamara, president and CEO of Giant Recreation World, who — along with his brothers and sisters — took over the company when their father passed away in January 2018. The McNamara family has continued its tradition of support through matching donations from the Giant Recreation World VIP Camping Club for the National Homeless Veterans Support organization throughout the year at camping events, as well as an annual Christmas Rally. “We’ve raised more than $70,000 over the past few years from this club, and it’s a great opportunity for our customers and staff to get together and form a tight group to enjoy their RVs,” McNamara said.

In 2018, for the second year in a row, Giant Recreation World was named an RV Business Top 50 award winner. “It demonstrates our commitment to being an industry leader, as well as highlighting how we’ve refined our operations as a family of dealerships to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations,” affirmed Lauren Kelly, marketing director at Giant Recreation World. “In a competitive market with online shopping and so many RV dealership options, we welcome customers into our showroom, service areas and events to form lasting relationships, including through the VIP Camping Club, which is truly unique in the industry.” The commitment to customer service echoes the McNamara family’s appreciation of veteran’s service as well. “We aim to be a giant in business, as well as a giant in support of our troops,” said McNamara. “That gratitude for their service is, and always will be, a part of the McNamara family.” ◆ JANUA RY 2019 : 77

Justin Connors Advising for Peace of Mind By Eric Wright

“ONE MUST HAVE A REASONABLE OPTIMISM,”

Milton S. Hershey, the founder of the famous chocolate company, once said.

“IT IS THE FORCE THAT MAKES THE WORLD GO.” We all want to be optimistic about our future. For some, however, that optimism is based on wishful thinking or simply a positive disposition. But a positive disposition alone will not carry you to your destination; rather, it is an alignment of your plans and actions that will get you to the target you are optimistically hoping to hit. This is where optimism must intersect with reasonableness. For Justin Connors of Connors Wealth Management, helping clients be reasonable and optimistic about their future is what he has dedicated his life to. “What people are seeking is peace of mind. We recognize that comes from being informed and setting realistic and achievable goals for their future,” he explained. “Our clients are usually fairly conservative and don’t expect to make inflated returns on their portfolio,

nor are they willing to accept big market losses. Basically, they want to ensure they can maintain their lifestyle and not run out of money.” When it comes to our retirement years, everyone wants to enjoy the opportunity to pursue long-postponed personal interests, such as travel or time with friends and family. What is more, on average, people are living far longer than ever, and that longevity continues to grow. Great, right? With the addition of more of those vibrant, healthy years to relish, many people’s financial resources are not positioned to underwrite the life and lifestyle they have anticipated for as long as it may be. Also, the cost of healthcare, which is helping make that longevity possible, continues to rise at a rate that may far outpace inflation and income. One other factor: more and more individuals are dependent on positioning their own funds to pay for their retirements as company pensions go the way of the dinosaur, so protecting their irreplaceable retirement capital has become much more essential.

Finding the Right Fit

“Our client base falls into the ‘Millionaire Next Door’ profile,” said Connors, referring to a bestselling book published in 2010 by two PhDs that showed the majority of millionaires in America are not in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue. Rather, they live simply, in average neighborhoods, and have accumulated their wealth through hard work and thrift.

“WE HELP THEM UNDERSTAND WE’RE IN ONE OF THE LONGEST MARKET CYCLES SINCE WORLD WAR II, HAVING PASSED THE MARKET CYCLE OF THE 90’s,”

said Connors. “Typically, the longer and higher these cycles go, the harder they tend to fall. Our goal is to position our clients not to ride the highs so they don’t incur big losses during market corrections.” ⊲

JA NUARY 2019

SPACE COAST B US INE S S

“What people are seeking is peace of mind. We recognize that comes from being informed and setting realistic and achievable goals for their future.” Instead, Connors’ approach is to tell clients what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear, about market realities… then prepare and position them, long-term, for these market fluctuations. This means carefully determining their risk tolerance in investments and sometimes making reasonable lifestyle adjustments to live within their budgets in order to maximize their long-term sustainability. To do this, Connors uses sophisticated computer models that help show potential performance based on historic trends. “A client may see themselves as being risk tolerant,” he said, “but when you run the risk assessment and ask if they would be comfortable with that level of loss, it often changes their self-evaluation.” Therefore, Connors recognizes that his relational fit with his clients and their fit with his firm must be carefully determined up front. “I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met with and, even though they were high-net worth individuals, their return expectations weren’t in alignment with their risk tolerance, so we decided we weren’t a good fit,” he said. “It’s best for the client and us to recognize this as early in the relationship as possible.”

The Relational Component

Connors has created a pretty clear profile of his prototypical client in terms of net worth, along with client expectations and their willingness to accept advice. “We on board people after an in-depth evaluation of their financial situation along with their long-term goal assessment so we can set reasonable and achievable expectations,” he explained. “This is turned into a plan of action, which we constantly monitor and review with the client quarterly.” It is the deep relational connection his team makes that he feels is their differentiator. “WE TREAT OUR

CLIENTS LIKE FAMILY; THERE IS NO LENGTH WE WON’T GO TO ANSWER A QUESTION OR HELP THEM WITH A CONCERN OR CHALLENGE.” Connors Wealth insists on quarterly meetings with clients. In addition, they hold gatherings throughout the year that combine the opportunity to socialize so that the team and clients can get to know each other better, while also featuring an important educational component.

Where that would be enough for most firms, Connors goes further. “I like being an independent advisor,” he said. “It enables me to be completely transparent about our fee structure, while also investing where my clients’ interests are best served, not based on firm or shareholder goals.” This focus has led to an a partnership with Marine Bank, in which Connors could send clients for loans and debt service, and the bank could comfortably refer clients to him for wealth management services. “Large investment firms typically have a banking component, and I wanted a partnership that could meet that need, as did Bill Penney at Marine Bank,” Connors said. The firm has a full-service feel, covering all major financial needs clients face. As Connors likes to say, “We like to be all things to a few people.” Looking at the larger picture, although their company is called Connors Wealth Management, the firm’s primary product is not financial or investment advice. It is much simpler — peace of mind. ◆

INNOVATION

& IMMEDIATE

ACTION

SINCE BEING FOUNDED IN 2003

by a group of engineers, ITI Engineering has grown into a global player in the development and manufacturing of innovative software, hardware and engineering solutions to support aerospace training and related activities. Think custom software and unique data transfer solutions that allow modern fighter and support aircraft operators to increase their sorties by reducing planning and maintenance activities.

ITI, a small company in Winter Springs (Seminole County), had been a supplier on the F-35 Tech Refresh 2 program for the past several years. In June 2017, when Melbourne-based Harris Corp. announced its award of the F-35 Lightning II Tech Refresh 3 (TR3) Aircraft Memory System (AMS) program, ITI literally jetted into action. The mission: establish a relationship with Harris in order to continue participating as the F-35 offboard data transfer system provider.

Most recently, the company also has proved to be quite adept at seizing emerging opportunities.

With the help of the Melbourne Regional Chamber, the effort became mission accomplished.

SPACE COAST B US INE S S

Im m e d i at e l y a f t e r t h at Ha r r i s an nou nc e me nt , I T I j oi ne d t he Melbourne Regional Chamber as a starting point to reach out to Harris and other Melbourne aerospace companies. By virtue of the chamber membership, ITI was invited to attend a Harris Supplier Diversity meeting. As a result of that meeting, plus ITI’s product exhibits at the chamber’s subsequent Florida TechXpo conference, the Harris small business team arranged for ITI to present a capabilities overview directly to the Harris TR3 AMS program team.

THE RESULT:

ITI was selected to supply the Harris TR3 ground support unit — just 10 months from introduction to contract award. In addition, ITI now is working with five other Melbourne small businesses with consulting, export, manufacturing, quality assurance and software capabilities. Those subcontractors contribute not only to ITI Engineering’s F-35 data transfer system program, but also to its F-16 program. “We were guided through the entire process,” said ITI Vice President Kevin Speed, referring to the chamber and the Harris small business team. “They were responsive and easy to work with.” Speed, of course, also gives his company some credit, particularly its ability to leverage experience and manage resources to be “f lexible and responsive” during proposal, design, verification, production and support. Or, as he describes it,

“WHAT WE DO VERY WELL IS LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. AND WE DEVELOP INFORMATION-TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS IN THE AEROSPACE ENVIRONMENT. WE DON’T DO IT FOR YOUR OFFICE; WE DO IT FOR AIRCRAFT PROGRAMS.” He added for emphasis, “We fill gaps and solve problems. Brainstorming, engineering, developing.” Yet, Speed does not lose sight of the help received when his company was seeking to ensure a chance to participate in the long-term future of an all-important program. Moving forward, the company’s next steps are to pursue additional work with Harris.

2019 BOARD INSTALLATION & IMPACT AWARDS

“The TR3 has a great deal of expansion opportunities,” Speed concluded, “and we’re excited about what the future holds.” ◆

Supporting the Future of Space

ASRC

FEDERAL and the Orion Program

ASRC

FEDERAL

IS HELPING TO SUPPORT THE NEXT GENERATION OF SPACE EXPLORATION, but actual work on flight-support operations is only part of its impact. As both the industry and the Space Coast look to the future, the company is effectively reshaping the local horizon.

With a local presence since 2000, ASRC Federal — headquartered in metropolitan Washington, D.C., as a subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corp., an Alaska Native entity — supports critical missions for their NASA and Air Force customers, including NASA’s Orion spacecraft program, on which the company is a subcontractor for Lockheed Martin. “Our strong and continued partnership on Orion exemplifies our commitment to providing exceptional, customer-focused service to Lockheed Martin and ultimately to NASA,” noted Lloyd Gregg, ASRC Federal’s general manager of flight support services. ASRC Federal won that contract in 2012 by virtue of its lengthy history of delivering high-performance space systems engineering, integration and satellite operations services to civil and defense agencies. ASRC Federal employs approximately 250 people on the Orion project, supporting all phases of the program’s life cycle and across the entire space systems architecture, including space and ground assets. Meanwhile, ASRC Federal also has kept an eye on the industry’s future, particularly Gregg, who is sort of a space industry lifer, with more than 30 years of extensive experience in systems engineering, human space operations and project management. He’s been on the Orion program since 2012 and previously worked on the shuttle, among other area space efforts.

Building a Workforce for the Future In 2015, recognizing the need to engage in knowledge transfer for the next generation of engineers, Gregg established an apprentice partnership with Eastern Florida State College that is now paying big dividends.

“MOST OF OUR WORKFORCE ON ORION CAME FROM THE SHUTTLE PROGRAM …SO, I BEGAN WORKING WITH THE COLLEGE TO DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF AEROSPACE TECHNICIANS AND WORKERS.” The apprentice program attracts students in the college’s aerospace technology program, trains them and pays their part-time salaries in hopes of creating a talent pipeline. “[The students] are assessed after four months to see if they have the capability to be an Orion technician,” Gregg said. To date, 30 of 31 participating students have been hired after the training. “It’s helped out the industry, and it’s helped out the college in terms of supplying jobs to the students.” Notably, the apprenticeship program has been so successful, the college has reached out to other local contractors to emulate it. Further, other outreach efforts by ASRC Federal personnel are ongoing with eyes toward giving back to the region as well as moving it forward. Community service is deemed a part of the job. For one, Gregg, a graduate of Florida Institute of Technology and the University of Central Florida, is a regular at numerous events and activities of the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce, which has supported the company’s efforts. Concluded Gregg: “It’s definitely a commitment by the company to help the next-generation workforce and the community.” ◆

Right Time, Right Place Astro Pak returns to the Space Coast with longstanding expertise and a renewed vision. IT’S OFFICIAL. A BIT OF SPACE COAST HISTORY HAS RETURNED IN A VERY BIG WAY. Astro Pak Corp., first present in Brevard County back in 1959 during the space industry’s earliest days, hosted an open house in late October to celebrate its new Florida facility, located just outside the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville. The newly renovated, 38,000-sq.-ft. facility opened earlier in July, representing both a new chapter for the precision cleaning company and a return to old stomping grounds. SPACE COAST B US INE S S

In 2016, Astro Pak acquired Chemko Technical Services, based in Mims since 1972, and was focused on industries such as medical devices, semiconductors, laser and automotive, in addition to aerospace. The new facility more than quadruples the available floor space. And now, with the space industry again buzzing with activity, Astro Pak is seeking to take up where it left off so many years ago — with on-site work at KSC, principally at the mobile launch platform in support of NASA’s upcoming space launch system to accommodate a variety of next-generation launch vehicles.

Processing in a controlled environment, Astro Pak will specialize in, for example, cleanliness verification for particle count, vacuum sealed packaging, cold shock and pressure testing. Additionally, Astro Pak is able to meet numerous industry specifications that come with technical code initials such as KSC-C-123J, CGA G-4.1-2009, ASTM G-93-03 and more.

“ We’ l l b e c o m b i n i n g o u r world-class precision cleaning services and our industryleading field operations teams under the same roof,”

said Astro Pak General Manager Jonathan Hopkins. “As a result, we’ll be able to support our customers both on the Space Coast and throughout the Southeast region. In a time of unparalleled growth in the space sector, the need for precision cleaning services on the Space Coast has never been clearer … The capacity and capabilities of this site are simply unmatched in the industry.” Notably, the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast and the North Brevard Economic Development Zone, along with the City of Titusville and the Titusville Chamber of Commerce, assisted on the relocation. According to Lynda Weatherman, president and CEO of the EDC, the move not only means the retention of existing jobs, but also the creation of additional jobs, “further strengthening the Space Coast’s hightech industry base,” she said.

THE SIGNATURE FEATURE OF ASTRO PAK’S NEW LOCATION IS AN ENCLOSED 70-FT.-TALL TOWER THAT MEASURES 15 FT. X 15 FT. AND CAN ACCOMMODATE HOSES OF UP TO 60 FEET IN LENGTH. Among other components, the facility also has an ISO 7 cleanroom and ISO 6 analysis lab, plus a pre-clean area with multiple work stations and ultrasonic units, as well as expanded hydrostatic, hydraulic and pneumatic testing capabilities. And the location serves as the hub for the mobilization of onsite field services. In all, Astro Pak has 10 locations worldwide, including in Mexico and Puerto Rico, with another cleanroom facility in Downey, California. At the same time, Astro Pak believes today, in Titusville, is the right time, right place.

“There’s just so much we have to look forward to out there,” concluded Hopkins. ◆

Through the Economic Lens

What’s in store for 2019? By Lynda Weatherman

2018 WAS ANOTHER BANNER YEAR IN BREVARD COUNTY.

Our community saw tremendous progress from our continued economic turnaround. The past year brought about countless ribbon cuttings, higher wages and an unemployment rate as low as 2.9 percent. So, what’s in store for 2019? For the second year in a row, the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC) and Allen & Company Florida Inc. have partnered to bring an economic forecast from nationally acclaimed economist Brian Wesbury. Last year, he connected to the audience with his easy-to-understand language, clear forecasts and energetic personality. Wesbury will bring his predictions and charismatic energy back to Melbourne at the King Center on January 17.

Allen & Company of Florida Inc. has been hosting Brian Wesbury for more than 25 years in Lakeland and now in the Melbourne market. Ralph Allen, chairman of the company, recently noted that this year has been showered with events that continue to impact Americans. From historical acts of Mother Nature to cyber-related privacy issues and unrelenting violence on both foreign and homeland soil, these events define our thoughts, our actions and sometimes our financial well-being. How these global events influence economies and our day-to-day lives is important to understand.

HERE ARE SOME OF HIS MEMORABLE PREDICTIONS FROM LAST YEAR: They Call Me Mr. Sunshine

“We were too optimistic going into the crisis, but since then we’ve been bullish. The number one reason I’ve been bullish is because I believe in entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity, and I believe we live right now in a world that has more of it than we’ve ever seen in the history of mankind. And I would argue that you (the Space Coast) are right in the middle of it.”

$299 and a 2-Year Plan

“Business investment as a percent of GDP has never been higher. We’ve had a massive recovery in business investment. For example, you have a 256 GB iPhone. Did you know when flash memory was invented in 1991, 1 GB of flash memory was $45,000? Times that by 256 and you’re looking at close to $12 million. Now, you can buy that phone for $299 and a 2-year plan. And when you spend only $300 to get $12 million worth of stuff, you’ve got a lot of cash left over. You want to know why profit margins are so high? Because it doesn’t cost a lot of investment in this day and age to create new things. Today, you can do it pretty quickly and you can do it pretty cheaply.”

5PM - 7:30PM THURSDAY

01. 17. 19 THE KING CENTER 3865 NORTH WICKHAM RD. MELBOURNE, FL 32935

Lowest Since the ‘50s

“Our savior is going to be technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. Productivity is booming everywhere, and one of the reasons is we’re changing to a technology economy. A lot of people worry that technology is going to cost jobs, however, what’s fascinating today, the unemployment rate in the nation is 4.1 percent; our forecast is that it gets to 3.7 percent this year (2018) and 3.4 percent next year (2019). 3.7 percent is the lowest since the ‘70s; 3.4 percent is the lowest since the ‘50s. There’s zero evidence technology is stealing jobs.”

The Whole World Gets Wealthier

“I have two sons, 15 and 13, who right now are a drain on family finances. Now, at some point, they get a job and they start ADDING to the family finances, and at that point, we’re better off. So when I think about China and India developing, we WANT them to become successful, because as they grow and begin to earn incomes and raise their wealth, the whole world gets wealthier.”

hen the first Slow & Low Bar-B-Que location opened in Cocoa Beach in September 2004, the timing was less than ideal. Within a week, the first of several hurricanes to impact Florida that month made landfall.

“We went about seven weeks after the storm first made landfall, and people at that point were still eating MREs (military ready-toeat meals),” Smith recalled. “They were so thankful for a hot meal of real food.”

“It was a very rocky first month,” said Nicole Smith, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband Joel. “We lost food and had to learn to get back up and running quickly. We considered October the month we truly opened our doors, and in October 2005 we planned a big party to celebrate our one-year anniversary.”

It is this adaptable, serviceoriented approach — combined with a commitment to real food — that has driven the 14-year success of Slow & Low Bar-B-Que, which opened a second location in Viera in 2015.

Then Hurricane Katrina hit, and once again, plans changed. This time, the planned party became a fundraiser, and rather than simply donating money, the Smiths — along with several employees and customers — traveled to Louisiana with enough food for 1,500 people, 1,000 toothbrushes and toothpaste samples, nebulizers and medicine for children, water-filled Budweiser cans, and cases of t-shirts.

NINETY-FIVE PERCENT OF WHAT COMES OUT OF THE KITCHEN IS MADE FROM SCRATCH. THEY GRIND THE CABBAGE THEMSELVES FOR COLESLAW AND ALL THE SAUCES ARE HOMEMADE. THE PORK COMES IN FRESH, WHICH IS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE, BUT THEY FEEL THE END RESULT IS WORTH IT.

“Some barbeque places pull their pork first thing in the morning, but ours isn’t pulled until you order it,” explained Smith. “Our brisket isn’t sliced until you order it. We handpatty each of our 8-ounce burgers. All this takes some time, but if you’re willing to wait a few extra minutes, you get a much better meal.” It is the unexpected menu items and the spins on traditional barbeque fare that set Slow & Low apart as well. “We get our mahi in fresh, and we sell a lot of it, but I still think people don’t expect that when they first look at our menu,” said Smith. “The sandwich is amazing, and our fish dip is homemade with mahi; a lot of places use cheaper and less tasty white fish.” The Smiths like to play with their food as well, creating favorites like Joel’s Crazy Pork Sandwich and The Hog. “We like to put our own twist on options you’ll find elsewhere,” Smith explained. “It’s about offering great service, wonderful food and a fun atmosphere.” ◆ JANUA RY 2019 : 101

ONEThought Last

A New Resolution New Year’s resolutions can be tricky, mainly because they are next to impossible to keep. Have you made a checklist yet? If not, consider taking this spin on your goals and follow the steps below.

1. Jot down 10 things that matter most to you. This can

range from food, people, animals, hobbies and the like. These should be the first ideas that come to mind.

2. Research shows it takes approximately 21 days to

build a new habit. Go ahead and make a blank calendar for 30 days to allow for some wiggle room.

3. Starting with day 1 on the calendar, list your first

top 10 item, then on day two, the second one, and so on. Keep repeating all your items until each calendar day has an item assigned.

4. Pick a date to start the process (preferably the first of

a month is ideal, but you can still begin mid-month). The key is following the routine diligently for 30 days.

5. Each day, visit your calendar, read the item listed

and do something kind for the person or thing. For example, if one of your top items is your spouse, do something kind for that person. If one of your items is chocolate cake, bake the dessert for someone to brighten their day.

6. At the end of the 30-day period, you will have not

only created a routine of giving and considering others, but you will be inspired to make this an ongoing lifestyle choice. The calendar checklist will force you to check in with your attitude on a daily basis, but most importantly, it will show you who and what it is in life that defines you.

Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.
