Editor’s Note

On Malaysia’s Independence Day last year, 31 August, David set out on yet another fund-raising project. This time, he is attempting to cycle to the Seven Modern Wonders of the World to raise RM5 million (USD1.27 million) for children with cancer. David is accompanied by Ving Lee, a young photographer. Their project, Seven Wunders, will see them on the road for two years, a journey that will take them to Taj Mahal in India, Petra in Jordan, the Colosseum in Italy, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, Machu Picchu in Peru, Chichén Itzá in Mexico and The Great Wall of China. Seeing the world by bike isn’t an original idea for sure. But to leave your family, friends and all that you’re comfortable with behind to pursue a cause greater than yourself takes a heart of gold, and as David puts it, “the ability to say, screw it!”. David and Ving are asking Malaysians to donate RM1.00 each. All monies will go to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia’s Children’s Home of Hope. If you are inspired by their story and wish to support, read our article on pages 56-59 to see how you can help.

The Commonwealth Games is taking place in Gold Coast, Australia this month. If you’re planning to be there during the games from 4 to 15 April, check out the list of fun things you could do in the city on pages 30-33. We’ve also put together a list of the places across Australia where you can sample the best avocado dishes, from avocado smoothies to giant burritos filled with fresh avocado and raw fish, to fuel your trip.

Our cover story this month looks at the gentrification of Bangkok’s oldest road, Charoen Krung. The 150-year-old thoroughfare, the city’s first road built in 1861, fell into disrepair in the early 20th century but now attracts the young and affluent middle class to its hip new restaurants, bars and galleries. Similarly, in Kuala Lumpur, the 1950s Zhongshan Building in Kampung Attap has been transformed into a unique space for creative types to meet and work together. Indie art spaces like Zhongshan are coming up in the city, offering an alternative to traditional white-walled galleries. Our writer Tan Lee Kuen takes a look at these platforms situated in warehouses, shop lots and vacant buildings.

Have you ever thought about the legacy you would like to leave behind when you go? Something that will allow you to be remembered for what you have contributed to the world? Some of you might have. One person I know is charting his now. His name is David Wu.

David wants to leave this earth with a big bang. You might have heard or read about him. He’s the guy who walked 600 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bahru in 2015 to raise funds for the repair of village houses damaged by floods. He’s also the guy who cycled from his home town of Alor Setar in Kedah to Taishan, China in search of his grandfather’s birthplace while simultaneously raising more funds to repair other damaged homes. If you think he felt accomplished in his life after these two feats, he didn’t.

Finally, our in-flight entertainment this month offers up the musical biopic The Greatest Showman, amidst other new movies. It’s a show worth watching, if only for the musical numbers. But if you’re a fan of Hugh Jackman, need I say more? I hope you will enjoy reading this month’s issue as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you. See you next month. ■

Letter Of The Month I remember my very first Malaysia Airlines flight. I was four. Our family was being transferred from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna, a beautiful coastal district on the east coast of Sabah. Although the day of flying was four weeks away, as a child, the anticipation felt like a million years. When the day finally came, I made sure to dress in my best. Like all first experiences, it felt magical. We couldn’t tell if we were scared or excited since none of my siblings knew what to expect. The flight lasted only 40 minutes, but it was the highlight of our lives for many years to come. Now almost 40 years later, I have experienced many firsts with Malaysia Airlines: my first time flying to Kuala Lumpur with my classmates (14 years old); my first time flying to London to further my studies and therefore, my first time being so far away from my family (18 years old); my first overseas work travel (22 years old); my first time enrolling in an airline loyalty programme (Enrich, 26 years old); my first time missing a flight with a colleague (Oh, if only you were reading this, Hana Harun!); the first time I redeemed my airline miles for an international flight (29 years old); the first time I used an airline mobile app (38 years old); the first time I shed tears over an airline tragedy; and finally this – the first time I am writing to you. I grew up with you and I have laid my trust in you all these years, Malaysia Airlines. For that, thank you from the bottom of my heart. goingplacesmagazine.com | 10 | April 2018

MIZAL ASHFEK KHAN, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

I had a great time reading a short piece in your February 2018 edition. It was about the incumbent Group CEO of Malaysia Airlines, Captain Izham Ismall, who assumed the position on 1 December 2017. To my surprise, I never thought that the man behind the cockpit commandeering the longest flight and fastest round-the-world flight on the nostalgic B777-200 in 1997 was him! In his brief 15-minute interview, his words would definitely have an impact on readers of Going Places. He believes that one should never dwell on regrets as it is a waste of time trying to change something that has already happened. His response to every single question being asked was spontaneous and witty at the same time. With his good personal attributes, I hope that Malaysia Airlines will soar to greater heights, just as it did during its glorious past. AMER EKRAM BIN AZMI, Alor Setar, Kedah, Malaysia

I read your February 2018 edition during my journey to Kuala Lumpur. I was very intrigued by the article “The Plague Fighter”, a story about Dr. Wu Lien-Teh, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1935. I was very surprised to read that a Malaysian was already nominated for this prestigious award at that time. The article was educational and at the same time, helpful for the Malaysian medical profession. I shared this article with my medical students during lectures, asking them to ponder the question of how we can continuously upgrade our medical knowledge in pursuit of a Nobel Prize in the future. Thank you, Going Places, for the article, and thank you very much, Malaysia Airlines, for the kind hospitality and safe journey. DR. KIM YUN JIN, Incheon, Republic of Korea

The annual Bali Spirit Festival is back, bringing together people from all walks of life who share a passion for yoga, dance, music and culture. This year’s theme is ‘Return to Source’, and sees day-time activities such as meditation, traditional Balinese performances and sound healing sessions conducted in a lush tropical setting of manicured gardens and cool shady trees. There will also be yoga classes for all levels, including beginners and children, as well as seminars on health, nutrition and personal development. Come sundown, enjoy the Bhakti music performances in an open-air venue under the stars. The festival supports several outreach initiatives to give back to the local community, by working together with international yoga teachers and musicians to raise funds for charity.

Catch the best in jazz, soul, blues and more with the return of the highly anticipated Singapore International Jazz Festival at Marina Bay Sands, with 12 mega-acts and a star-studded line-up of performances across the weekend. Kicking off the festival is electroswing sensation Parov Stelar, followed by Grammy Award-winning soul songstress Lalah Hathaway and jazz-pop star Jamie Cullum. Legendary hip-hop and soul artist Lauryn Hill will also be performing in Singapore for the first time at the festival. For a sophisticated evening under the stars, take it up a notch at the luxuriously appointed private area called the Champagne Terrace, which offers partygoers an elevated view of the main stage, coupled with table service.

Fresh Start Celebrated since ancient times, Songkran is an important religious and cultural festival that marks the beginning of a new year for the Thai people. Traditionally, celebrations involved the pouring of water on the young and elderly to wash away sins and bad luck. While this is still practised, the festival has taken on a fun twist: full-blown water fights, where everyone, including unsuspecting tourists walking down the streets, become fair game to an arsenal of water guns, hoses and buckets. Those seeking a more tranquil experience can join the throng of devotees at the temples for prayers or offer food to monks to earn merits in accordance with Buddhist belief. As its name suggests, this restaurant on Lavender Hill features a selection of familiar Vietnamese street favourites like banh mi made with homemade pâté and Vietnamese whipped butter, filled with grilled pork, beef and chicken. Hot off the grill is a wide selection of meat – pork ribs, spring chicken, and duck with mung bean paste are just some of what’s available – and seafood sourced from the Billingsgate Market; among the favourites are oysters with house-made cheese sauce and stuffed freshwater snails. vietnamesegrill.co.uk

A World Of Gastronomy

Some of Asia’s brightest culinary stars will converge at the Ubud Food Festival, a three-day festival on 13-15 April, when over 100 speakers will share their culinary insights, ideas and dishes based on this year’s theme of ‘Generasi Inovasi’ (Innovation Generation). The festival will feature a range of ticketed and free events, from cooking demonstrations, workshops and food tours, to markets, film screenings, live music and in-depth forum discussions with dozens of notable chefs from Indonesia, as well as Chef Rishi Naleendra from Cheek by Jowl in Singapore and Chef Jun Lee from Soigné in Seoul.

This year’s World Gourmet Summit takes place on 2-29 April, and is aimed at introducing diners to some of the world’s lesser-known but nonetheless, exciting cuisines. Themed ‘The Discovery WGS’, it will be presented by some of the most talented chefs from Asia, Eastern and Central Europe, and America such as Michelin Chef Patrizia Di Benedetto. There will be a series of ticketed tasting events, talks and masterclasses such as the WGS Discovery Brunch at Tamarind Hill, The Hungarian Tasting Table at La Brasserie in The Fullerton Bay Hotel and a Mexican Fiesta at El Mero Mero.

Taste Australia In Adelaide

For a little taste of Paris on Jalan Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, head down to the newly opened Brasserie Fritz. Located on the ground floor of WOLO Hotel, the all-day brasserie includes a bakery where croissants, baguettes and pastries are made fresh every morning, while the main restaurant features a range of French-inspired meals like steak frites, duck confit and beef bourguignon, as well as a seafood bar, where you can order an eight-course omakase meal personally prepared by Chef de Cuisine Steve Ariffin. If you fancy a drink or two, sidle up to the gorgeous bar, where you can order a light spritzer during the day, and a classic cocktail when the sun sets. Also recommended: the hot chocolate, which is made from single-origin cocoa from Malaysia, Tanzania, Ecuador and Brazil.

There’s much ado about Adelaide during Tasting Australia, a food festival that showcases the best of South Australia’s food scene. Taking place on 13-22 April, the festival includes tantalising events such as Tasting Australia Airlines, a day-long programme that sees you travelling to vineyards and restaurants across South Australia on a 50-seat chartered plane; Glasshouse Kitchen, where star-studded chefs will present their award-winning dishes; and East End Cellars Masterclass, which will help you gain a deeper understanding of Australian wine, beer and spirits. Chefs joining the line-up include Christian Puglisi of Relæ in Copenhagen; Norbert Niederkofler of three-Michelin-starred St Hubertus in Italy; and Australia’s Chef Jock Zonfrillo of Orana and Dan Hunter of Brae.

Painting A Masterpiece

Malaysian artist Ronnie Mohamad presents his most recent creations from the Pollution and Tug of War series. He also introduces his Gossip Series at a solo exhibition organised by the Malaysian National Visual Art Gallery. Through a variety of human interactions, he expresses tradition and modernity, energy and serenity combined. He also explores environmental issues impacting daily life. Dramatic effects are introduced in some of his paintings by the inclusion of sporadic colors within the immensity of his mono-chromatic charcoal creations. His signature fingerprints, which are present in a confident manner through the canvas, adorn the scene in an unassuming manner.

Some 80 years after its creation, the Musée national Picasso-Paris in France, in partnership with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía of Madrid, Spain, presents the story of Picasso’s La Guernica, one of the world’s most famous works of art. The astounding artwork, created after the bombing of the town Guernica during the Spanish civil war, was an anti-Franco masterpiece and has since become a symbol of anti-fascism. The painting itself will remain in its permanent location in Madrid; however, on display in Musée Picasso will be a vast collection of sketches and preparatory works as well as an in-depth historical insight into the events surrounding its conception.

Tour de Ampang

goingplacesmagazine.com | 28 | April 2018

They say you never forget how to ride a bicycle. Well, once again they are wrong, and I’ve got to stop believing everything they say. I’m 50 years old and I just bought a bicycle but the last time I rode a bike was when I was 18. I used to love cycling when I was younger because it gave me the freedom to visit my friends who lived on the other side of town and because of the exhilarating sense of achievement when I was able to eventually conquer the steepest hills. But then I learnt to drive, so when I sat on my brand new bike for the first time, I wondered, “How do I switch this thing on?” I have managed to remember how to start but I can’t remember how to stop, so I’ve just been cycling up and down the driveway of my condo until I collapse from exhaustion, which takes all of ten minutes. I haven’t plucked up the courage to go onto the roads of Ampang yet because, well, there are Malaysian drivers out there.

in the chain. So, they wore trousers, which was considered to be scandalous, and when young ladies went out cycling with men, the elderly chaperones couldn’t keep up, which created other scandals. The bicycle, too, created a scandal in Malaya in the 1890s, with outraged letters to Taiping’s newspaper the Perak Pioneer, complaining that Malay boys were riding their bikes dangerously fast. Fortunately, that sort of thing doesn’t happen anymore.

The bicycle would seem to be an old-fashioned thing but a hundred years ago, they were the height of modernity, helping to, quite literally, pave the way for better roads, the spread of national newspapers, kick-start Malaya’s early rubber industry and even improve gender equality. In the 1880s, the bicycle was suddenly improved when wooden wheels were replaced with tyres made from Malaya’s brand new rubber plantations. There were not many cars back then and companies like Dunlop and Michelin sprang up to manufacture the pneumatic tyre for bicycles. In Europe, there was a sudden craze for cycling but it was dangerous for women because they had to wear huge skirts that would catch

But it was the French who really took to the bicycle. France of a hundred years ago loved speed and it was they who pioneered car racing, the airplane, fast trains, fast ocean liners and the bicycle. In 1903, the struggling sports newspaper L’Auto introduced the first Tour de France. L’Auto was printed on yellow paper, hence the race leader wears a yellow jersey. In 1903, 60 cyclists fought through six stages that were each an astonishing 400 kilometres long. In a country that was barely connected by railways, the cyclists raced along appalling roads with spare tyres strapped around their bodies, swigging from bottles of wine (it was safer than drinking any offered drinks), smoking lots of Gitanes,

eating at roadside cafés, drinking brandy to perk themselves up and then snoozing under trees. There was a lot of cheating in the early editions of le Tour. It was suspected that some cyclists took the train to the finishing line and in 1903, the pre-race favourite had himself dragged along by a car with a piece of string that he gripped with his teeth. He eventually pulled out of the race after being given a poisoned bottle of lemonade. Even now, over 100 years later, Tour de France cyclists will not drink anything offered by a roadside spectator. Fortunately, cheating doesn’t happen on the Tour de France anymore. Although I love the Tour de France I don’t think I’ll be competing in it with my new bicycle. Not this year, at least. Not until I’ve summoned up enough courage to face the Malaysian roads. But the good news is that I won’t be alone because cycling is becoming popular in Malaysia again. With the explosion of cars on the roads from the 1980s, virtually all bicycles were swept away but now they are starting to come back. There are now a great many bicycle shops doing brisk business and a new breed of cycling enthusiasts is determinedly seeking out challenging routes. We have forgotten that Malaysia was once a nation of cyclists but ever so slowly drivers will re-learn that the bicycle has as much right to the roads as the car. I recently drove past a night-time cyclist who had wrapped so many lights around himself that he was blinking like a Christmas tree. I could try that. ■

Getting The Strategy Right Celcom Axiata, the oldest telecommunications provider in Malaysia, has had a strong run despite a challenging market. Its deputy chief executive officer, Azwan Khan Osman Khan, shares why.

Tell us more about yourself and your role at Celcom.

In 2005, I joined Celcom as chief strategy officer, when we were still part of Telekom Malaysia. After de-merging from TM in 2008, the cellular and international businesses became what is now the Axiata Group. I moved there as group chief strategy officer, and stayed in my role for five years. I then moved to Sri Lanka as Group Chief Operating Officer for Axiata’s Sri Lankan entities, and in 2016, I rejoined Celcom as Deputy Chief Executive Officer. I run the revenue line directly and make sure that the numbers come in. How has the journey been so far?

It has been great! Celcom as a company has had its shares of ups and downs. Things were looking down when I first joined in 2005. I was part of the team that managed to turn the company around, and we had many years of excellent growth. When I rejoined in 2016, however, we had lost subscribers and revenue, falling to third place among the major telecommunications providers in Malaysia. Things took a turn for the better last year, where we’ve had a good run and grown the market share, and are back to our #2 position. How have mobile consumer trends changed in the last few years?

Clearly, the big change in the past decade has been the switch from voice to data. The average consumption per person is now 8GB of data on mobile. We recognise that a lot of it is on video, so we introduced services like Video Walla, which gives our users huge access to pure video content. The consumers of today also expect network quality to be better than ever, so we are consistently investing in that. What matters is consistency, and we believe in providing an excellent and consistent experience, no matter where you are in the country. Although video and data are the current trend, we’re still trying

April 2018_InProfile_Celcom Axiata.indd 35

to anticipate how we can be more relevant to customers going forward. Another aspect that has changed is customer experience. Gone are the days when you can purely rely on putting base stations and expect people to subscribe to you. Consumers today have much higher expectations. There are those who want pure online interaction, but there are also segments who prefer coming into a customer service branch and talking to someone face-to-face. This is why we’re embarking on a strong omni-channel experience. We’ve revamped our website to be more user-friendly, and improved on our app, to give people the freedom to choose how they want to interact with us, and we will continue to focus on providing the best customer experience.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 35 | April 2018

Interview Eris Choo | Photography courtesy of Celcom Axiata Berhad

Celcom recently launched several lifestyle offerings. How does this tie in to your services?

I strongly believe that as a telco, we have to go beyond providing pure telecommunications services. The type of products that we have launched recently, such as our Celcom First plans, really takes us beyond that. When you sign up with us, you can choose to redeem free one-off return flight tickets to any destination in ASEAN, or monthly movie tickets from Golden Screen Cinemas, discounts for the ride-sharing app Grab, drinks from Tealive, and more. How do you choose which companies to partner with?

We look at market trends and make sure that we’re providing things that are relevant to people’s lifestyles. For example, there are more people using ride sharing these days, so we partnered with Grab to provide discounts to users who use the app. In terms of leisure and entertainment, Malaysians are avid moviegoers, so we partnered with Golden Screen Cinemas to provide users with free movie tickets monthly.

3/15/18 11:55 AM

IN PROFILE | Azwan Khan Osman Khan

One of the things that we do very well, both at Axiata and at Celcom, is partnerships. Many people don’t realise that we were the first to open our doors to Mobile Virtual Network Operators, such as TuneTalk, RedOne, Merchantrade and XOX since 2008, where they ‘ride’ on our network but are essentially an independent operator. We also have a strong partnership with Digi, another major Malaysian telecommunications operator. Despite being competitors on the retail front, we work together on building infrastructure and connectivity. Our view is quite simple. It doesn’t make sense to try and reinvent the wheel, so we partner with whoever is best in the business. What are some of the current challenges in the industry?

goingplacesmagazine.com | 36 | April 2018

Data pricing is an issue. Companies are giving away more data for less. On the surface, that’s a good thing for consumers, but what we do not like is fine print. There would be packages that promise a large amount of data, but only a set amount can be used on the weekend, or weekdays, or on certain platforms. One of the first things that I did when I came in as Deputy CEO was to simplify our packages. In December 2016, we launched our prepaid XPAX #NoKelentong, to get away from all that. What you see is what you get. Broader challenges in the industry would include capital expenditure. We spent RM1.5 billion (USD 383 million) in capex in 2017, even though industry revenues were flat.

I strongly believe that as a telco, we have to go beyond providing pure telecommunication services. The type of products that we have launched recently, such as our Celcom First plans, really takes us beyond that.

Why are revenues not improving?

Hyper-competition. Typically, most markets in the world consist of three big players that are profitable. Even India, for example, used to have nine to ten telecommunication players, but smaller ones are consolidating because they are unprofitable. In Malaysia, we have three major players and two smaller players. If you’re a small entity and you’re losing money, the only way to compete is by price, which effectively brings down market revenues overall. From our point of view, we are very clear that we will not fight in a price war. Our products will be the best in value and overall customer experience, but not necessarily be the cheapest. Celcom has consistently invested in improving 4G coverage nationwide. What does this entail?

Celcom currently has the strongest rural coverage in the country, especially on 2G, while our 4G is on par. Revenue from some of these obscure

sites is low, but having said that, these are the places where you are most likely to need coverage if you run into trouble. A lot of our 4G investment also involves increasing coverage and bringing a good broadband experience to rural areas. Profitability matters, but as a company, our purpose is to build awesome moments and bring great experiences to people. In the broadest sense, we hope to open up worlds beyond telecommunications. Our lifestyle offerings, for example, have nothing to do with a telco product. It’s about the holistic awesomeness of being a Celcom user. What plans are in the pipeline for 2018?

We will continue to invest heavily in improving our network, to ensure we are the top, undisputed 4G network in Malaysia. Customer experience will also be our top priority. We use Net Promoter Score surveys to gauge and improve on our services. Customers are asked to rate us from a scale of 0-10, and how likely they would recommend us to friends or family. Even our partners, such as our dealers, get surveyed, which is a radical shift in our mindset, where we ask them to judge us. Another side we are looking into is digitisation. This includes simplifying the business using IT, and adopting a digital mindset. If a user wants to sign up with us, they can come online, key in their details, and we will deliver a SIM card right to their doorstep. If they want to top up their prepaid cards, we’ve got digital apps that can be paid for through online transactions with a simple click. Since September 2016 with the new management team, we’ve done a lot to simplify processes and change the internal culture and mindset of the company. Things were somewhat bureaucratic in the past, but they’ve gotten better. Most importantly though, we are increasingly obsessed with providing the best end-to-end customer experience as our core strategy. By that I don’t mean customer service alone, but everything, including the product, network, the sign-up or registration experience, everything; End to end. We hope that with all these strategies in place, we can look forward to a strong 2018. ■

The oldest paved road in Bangkok, Charoen Krung Road was constructed after European consuls in the city had petitioned for a road suitable for their carriages to be built. Completed in 1864, the 8.5-kilometre road loosely follows the Chao Phraya river, passing through Chinatown and Rattanakosin. It was an important thoroughfare of its time, encouraging growth and expansion in the surrounding areas, including the city's first tram line.

Do

The area went into decline in the early 20th century, but of late, is showing renewed energy as a slew of new restaurants, bars and galleries pop up along Charoen Krung Road and its adjacent sois or lanes. Much of the action is focused on the Chinatown area, where a burgeoning creative community is creating a scene that feels fresh and exciting. In May 2017, creative hothouse Thailand Creative and Design Centre – better known as TCDC – set up its new home in the historical Grand Postal Building, giving the area's lively aspirations a real shot in the arm.

After the success of The Jam Factory, Thai architect Duangrit Bunnag hopes to work the same magic with the ambitious Warehouse 30 project. He has converted a clutch of old World War II-era storage facilities a stone's throw from the river into a multi-purpose space for events, designer boutiques and coffee shops. To-date, the space has hosted design events and creative markets, as well as regular film screenings. For upcoming events, check their Facebook page for updates.

Despite the influx of new blood, the neighbourhood retains its slow-paced community feel where new businesses know and support one another while co-existing happily with longterm residents. Napol Jantraget of up-to-theminute eatery 80/20 sees an increasing change in the neighbourhood but strives to retain the amicable spirit of the place, saying, "The locals have been here for generations and we don't want to change anything; we just want to be good neighbours."

TCDC is a government initiative to inspire and boost Thailand's fertile design and creative scene. To that end, its sleek new home has an impressive design library with more than 70,000 books on art and design, a maker space, a gallery, auditoriums and function rooms. The rooftop garden offers sweeping views of the area. Non-members can use the library by purchasing a one-day pass.

One of the pioneering forces in the area's rejuvenation is Speedy Grandma. Opened in 2012, the gallery continues to host some of the city's edgiest exhibitions by new and established artists, as well as hold some of its wildest artsy parties. A second gallery, the nearby Soy Sauce Factory, has reopened after a short closure, as a showroom for design company 56th Studio and as a pop-up space for art.

Leading the way is 80/20, an innovative restaurant run by young chefs Napol Jantraget, Saki Hoshino and Andrew Martin. They are reinterpreting Thai cuisine while sticking to locally sourced and organic produce as much as possible. The menu changes according to what's in season or can be foraged from the local market. Stop here to encounter palate surprises such as Napol's artful salad made of local water plants or Martin's unique durian khai tom or steamed egg infused with durian, Thai rice wine and fish sauce. Around the corner, tucked in Charoen Krung Soi 28, is Jua. The contemporary Japanese izakaya is opened by Chet Adkins, formerly of Ku De Ta, in partnership with Bangkok-based photographer Jason Lang, whose photographs line the restaurant's walls. Jua specialises in yakitori, kushiyaki and shared plates, as well as sake from some of Japan's top producers. Fans flock here for the tiger prawn with durian butter, uni orecchiette and miso-garlic clams with milk bread toast. Stop by FooJohn, a lovingly renovated 1960s post-modern building that used to house a Chinese merchant's headquarters. Inside you'll find three offerings: FoudieJoie, a sultrily lit

French bistro with crepes and charcuterie on the menu; a speakeasy bar specialising in prohibition-era cocktails and Negroni drinks; while the rooftop is the popular SpareParts Smokehouse serving up smoked BBQ. Meanwhile, the rustic 100 Mahaseth is a nose-to-tail restaurant with a focus on Isaan and Southeast Asian fare. Opened by chefs Chalee Kader and Randy Nopprapa, it offers an intriguing mix of offal and non-offal fare. After dinner, head over to SoulJohn, a laidback live music bar dedicated to soul, blues and jazz. Or swing by the bright and cheery Tropic City for one of its extensive rum-based cocktails in a fun, Polynesian setting. Watch out for special culinary events in the area such as the Charoen Krung 28 Block Party, a new annual event where local eateries team up to feed and water a communal table in a closed-off lane.

Sleep To fully immerse yourself in the neighbourhood, stay at Ba Hao Residences, situated in Soi Nana in Chinatown, off Charoen Krung Road. Sitting above the Oriental-themed Ba Hao bar, the residence has two tastefully decorated rooms with large windows offering a view of local life. There is a handsome common area in which to lounge, but for a late-night tipple, go downstairs to the seductive bar, lit in a sultry neon red, for one of its signature cocktails made with locally sourced liquor. â–

Food For Fuel From humble beginnings, the Aussie avocado has quickly become a brunch menu staple. Words + Infographic courtesy of Tourism Australia

A trend that started out as simple smashed-avo-on-toast has now grown to see cafés and restaurants producing everything from avocado ice cream to avo-lattes. In fact, over the last decade, consumption in Australia has tripled from 1.2 kilogrammes to 3.5 kilogrammes, while production has more than doubled to 66,000 tonnes to keep up with demand, according to industry body Avocados Australia Limited. With the secret out, Australian-style brunches are popping up on menus everywhere from London to New York, but when it comes to quality coffee and a mid-morning feast, there is nowhere better in the world to have it than in Australia.

Where to go in Kuala Lumpur for your next art fix. Words Tan Lee Kuen | Photography SooPhye

Situated in a warehouse, shop lots and a vacant building, these art spaces (and a hub) are exciting alternatives to the 'white cube' galleries.

The Zhongshan Building

goingplacesmagazine.com | 52 | April 2018

While not your traditional art space, The Zhongshan Building is making waves as a creative destination. The idea is a long time coming in Kuala Lumpur, a stimulating cluster with cheap rent and adequate infrastructure where artists, designers and other creative folks can work, gather and collaborate. So when the Zhongshan Building made its first blip on the city's creative radar, it wasn't long before it snowballed into a vibrant hub and one of the city's arts and design hotspots. Situated in Kampung Attap, a quiet enclave within walking distance of the bustle of Petaling Street, Zhongshan is made up of three interconnected shophouses that once housed the Zhongshan Association, a frozen foods supplier and other merchants. In the hands of a bunch of forward-thinkers, the 1950s building has been transformed into a unique platform

that allows a gathering of creative disciplines and the meeting of people. Today, the 12-unit building is occupied by art galleries, artist studios, design and fashion studios and research centres, as well as a library, a record store and more. This is thanks to Our ArtProjects, a two-woman art consultancy outfit comprising Liza Ho and Snow Ng. The freelancing duo were curating pop-up art shows in various venues when Ho's mother-in-law inherited the property. "We were not actively looking for a gallery space but when this opportunity came, we were inspired to do something with it," says Ho. Wanting good neighbours, Ho and Ng invited their like-minded friends to join them, offering affordable rent and a chance to be part of a close-knit creative community. It didn't take long for the idea to catch and the building was almost fully occupied within the year. "We didn't have an exact plan for the space and it happened organically. Now, our focus is on the community and providing the space for artists and other disciplines to meet and collaborate," says Ho.

fono, an intimate performance and events space, came into being because of Zhongshan Building. "We were just an idea until the opportunity to rent this space came up and we decided to just do it," says Uzair Sawal, a member of the collective Public School that runs the space, which also serves as a listening room and a rare music library. "It's been great so far. There's a diverse community here but we all have the common objective of creating things." The public is welcome to drop by and explore Zhongshan or participate in events hosted by the tenants. A good starting point for exploration is the Our ArtProjects gallery on the ground floor. The gallery showcases progressive contemporary artists and has had pioneering artists Nirmala Dutt and Wong Hoy Cheong in its past programmes, as well as a slew of up-and-comers. KongsiKL KongsiKL is an interdisciplinary space for experimental work set in an old 900-squaremetre warehouse at Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur. The warehouse, provided by property developers Exsim Group, is managed by KakiKongsi, a team comprising architects, designers, artists, a dancer and a landscape architect. The space itself is a thing of beauty, an empty cavernous hall with high ceilings and natural light filtering in from the roof windows. Artists are invited to do site-specific projects for the unusual setting and the public can drop in to witness the making of the work. "At KongsiKL, we want to instil the spirit of sharing, be it about art, education or knowledge.

KongsiKL debuted last year with an interactive dance performance called Dances in Ruins, followed by a festival of site-specific and participatory exhibitions and performances that went on for three weekends in December. Moutou Worth a visit for its rooftop setting alone, Moutou on Lorong Panggong in Chinatown was founded by Wong Eng Leong, Wong Min Lik and Ayam Fared as a grassroots response to the established arts community. This open-air artistrun space doubles up as an urban edible garden, which fits in nicely with the collective's objectives of diversity and sustainability. Moutou's artistic programme is as eclectic as its atmosphere, featuring live gigs, audio-visual exhibitions, film screenings and workshops, usually imbued with a socially conscious theme. "We wanted to create a place for free expression and one that celebrates diversity," says Ayam, who is a theatre practitioner and writer. Pedal Power Malaysians David Wu and Ving Lee are helping to fight childhood cancer by pedalling through the Seven Wonders of the World. Words Kate Guest | Photography courtesy of Seven Wunders

They call themselves the Seven Wunders. “It started out as a personal endeavour to cycle around the world. To do something totally outrageous at least once in my lifetime,” says Wu. “My previous two endeavours focused on helping flood victims and the less fortunate repair their homes,” he adds.

In 2015, Wu walked 500 kilometres from the capital Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bahru in northern Kelantan state to raise money for flood victims, and in 2016, cycled 4,000 kilometres from his hometown in Kedah to Guangdong, China in search of his ancestral village. “This time round, I knew it was going to be the last hurrah. I’m already 51 and the body can only take that much. Given that it would likely be the last crazy stunt I’d pull, I wanted it to be related to cancer,” he says. Wu’s sister died from breast cancer in 2014. “I guess it all started when I watched her wither away and (I was left) feeling helpless. Charity was my way of dealing with that helplessness, by getting up and doing something.” He chose to focus on childhood cancer in honour of a friend’s five-year-old who had the disease.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 57 | April 2018

Some people run marathons, others shave their heads, but when it comes to raising money for charity, few people rival Malaysians David Wu and Ving Lee in going the extra mile. They’re going an extra 25,000 miles or 40,000 kilometres, in fact, on an epic two-year cycling journey to the Seven Modern Wonders of the World. If Malaysians pledge to donate just RM1.00 (USD0.26) each, they hope to raise RM5 million (USD1.27 million) to help the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) fight childhood cancer.

Wu, a businessman in the food and beverage industry, and Ving, 35, a cameraman, left Kuala Lumpur on 31 August last year. They ticked off their first wonder, the Taj Mahal, in India and from there cycled to Jordan via Pakistan and Iran. As you read this, they have probably just left the Lost City of Petra and are headed for the Pyramids, an ancient rather than modern wonder, but one they couldn’t resist including. From there they’ll cycle to Europe to see the Roman Colosseum, before flying from the U.K. to Argentina for the South American leg, which takes in Rio’s statue of Christ the Redeemer and Peru’s Machu Picchu. Then it’s on to Chichén Itzá in Mexico, and a flight to Japan before making their way overland to the Great Wall of China. At seven months in they’ve already faced their share of problems. At the time of this interview, they had just spent five days in the Pakistani border town of Taftan, wrangling with immigration officers to let them pass into Iran after being accused of a one-day visa overstay. “We knew it was a non-issue but cutting the red tape was a nightmare, hence the prolonged detention,” says Wu. “No one really knew what they needed in order to process the approval. We had to piece things together bit by bit as language was a huge barrier. Being left in the dark in a conflicted part of the country was quite (hair-raising).” They were eventually allowed to leave after intervention from Pakistani friends, the Malaysian High Commission and perhaps even, they suspect, the Pakistani prime minister.

Besides the expected language barriers and cultural differences, their biggest challenge is maintaining their mental strength. “From homesickness, mechanical failures, frustrations, feelings of fear, loneliness, worries, bureaucracy, getting ripped off ... the mind needs to be really strong to keep going,” admits Wu. Being Malaysian, they faced one additional hardship: finding food they like. “You could say having familiar food (or the lack of) would be a major hardship!” laughs Wu, who is a little fed up with roti and dhal right now. The pair also face the small issue of spending hours on a bike every day. "Needless to say, it is a huge physical challenge having to cycle an average of 100 kilometres a day, but so far so good. No injuries or excessively sore butts,” he says, adding that there was no training at all prior to the start of the journey. Wu is, of course, being somewhat disingenuous about his fitness levels given his past walking and cycling endeavours.

6

to photograph and document the journey and ultimately to gain an amazing life experience.” The pair sleep in the cheapest guest houses they can find, or in the homes of friends and supporters. With room to carry just 30-35 kilogrammes on their bikes, they have sleeping bags but no tent. “Trust me, when one has cycled for 10 hours in a day, you’ll sleep well,” says Wu. “But often we need to fulfil other obligations such as writing updates or articles, responding to messages, planning for the next

7

Wu met Ving, who is more of a novice, on his trip to China. “I was the cameraman for David when he searched for his ancestral village during the cycle to China and the experience left me in awe,” he says. “I could feel the emotions that David went through, and was inspired. When I found out that he was going to attempt the Seven Wonders, I asked to join him. He asked me to think very carefully first, so I took about a month to decide. I dropped everything and here I am today. My motivation is to see the world and have an adventure while I’m still relatively young,

I guess it all started when I watched her wither away and (I was left) feeling helpless. Charity was my way of dealing with that helplessness, by getting up and doing something.

day, archiving photos and editing before we sleep. There is plenty to do other than cycling.” Yet as plentiful as the challenges are, they are far outweighed by the rewards of experiencing the world slowly and up close, whether it’s the mystical pagodas of Myanmar or the smile of a child running along beside them. Wu says it’s the people they will remember the most. “The kindness and hospitality have been amazing. We have seen how a genuine smile, a firm handshake, and a warm hug can open doors and take you places. We also get to dispel misconceptions about certain countries and their people. And we delight in seeing how we have been able to affect quite a number of folks back home to initiate fundraising activities on their own. That’s a huge bonus and we hope to infect more in the future. We like this positive aspect of society best.”

April 2018_Explore_Seven Wunders03.indd 59

When they are lucky enough to have Wi-Fi connection, they check in with their support network back home. Wu worries about his 81-year-old mother, who is still coming to terms with her son’s journey, while Ving spends time reassuring his anxious girlfriend. Besides food, family and friends, Wu says he misses simple things such as taking a drive on the weekend. “Simply put, we miss the Malaysian way of life. You can take the Malaysian out of Malaysia but you can’t take Malaysia out of the Malaysian, right?” In the end, their journey is as life-changing for Wu and Ving as it is for the children they will help. “It has taught us to know our strengths and weaknesses,” says Wu. “And that the world isn’t really what you see on television. The qualities of a good human being are very much alive and well.” It certainly is. Wu and Ving prove it every day. ■

ASIA’S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS

contacted Satongun several weeks earlier to inform her that she had been picked as Asia's Best Female Chef for 2018, but the wait for the official announcement had been a nerveracking one nonetheless. “Is this for real?” she kept asking. When the news was finally made

2

public however, her reaction was low-key and understated, much like Paste itself. Located in Ratchaprasong in central Bangkok, near international hotels and popular shrines, Paste is just minutes from the modest Pratunam neighbourhood where Satongun grew up. The worlds couldn't be more different. “I cooked with my mum since I was very young,” she recalls. “(She had) a street stall so I helped her every day.” They served kanom jeen (noodles made from lightly fermented rice) with three or four home-cooked curries, clear soups, hard-boiled eggs with five-spice, and a handful of stir-fries, all from a cart on the street. “It was a lot of prep and there were no machines. We did everything ourselves,” including making the curry pastes by hand. Satongun went on to study English at university and dreamed of cooking. She was working in a restaurant when she met her husband. But she was in an office job because she had not been given a spot in the kitchen. “He already had his Thai restaurant in Australia” in the Southern Highlands, she remembers, on the road between Sydney and Canberra. They quickly realised that they shared the same goals and visions for Thai food. Satongun could unlock the secrets of source materials in Thai. When Bailey has a vision of how to modernise dishes, Satongun painstakingly perfects the ideas in the kitchen. Within weeks she followed him to Australia and they have formed an inseparable team ever since. “We were two people with a dream and we wanted to follow that dream,” she says simply.

“It's online,” said Bongkoch “Bee” Satongun softly, looking at her phone. It's the end of the lunch service at Paste, the elegant restaurant that she and husband Chef Jason Bailey have had since 2014. The organisers of the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants awards had

“I'd never been outside of Thailand and I knew nothing about Australia,” admits Satongun. But her intuition told her it was the right thing to do. Did the methodical, determined Satongun ever doubt her impulsive choice? “No,” she says categorically. “I never thought of giving up. Or that I had made a mistake.” She learned about the rigours of working in a commercial 1. Satongun is known for her bold approach to traditional Thai cooking 2. Paste's kaeng bon is a rare dish and is an excellent example of a Thai curry

Yet recognition did not come straightaway and the restaurant's website still brags that it is one of Bangkok's best-kept secrets. These days it is much harder for Paste to make that claim. The restaurant was awarded one Michelin star in Bangkok's first Michelin guide last year, just one of the 14 restaurants to make the cut. Satongun was named Asia's Best Female Chef. And at the star-studded awards ceremony in Macau in March, the restaurant entered the list of Asia's 50 Best Restaurants. The exposure was hard on the staff, and the chefs, at least initially. “Customers come in with more expectations. There's more pressure,” laughs Satongun, but she claims that the awards do not make a difference. “I have to keep working!” ■

After winning accolades Down Under, including a prize for Best Thai Restaurant in Australia for their restaurant Classic Thai Cravings, Satongun was ready to bring her food home. After eight years in Australia, Satongun and Bailey moved back to Thailand and opened the original Paste in 2012. But in 2014, the opportunity to open in a more refined setting arose, and they took the challenge. They brought some of their favourite recipes like yum tawai and worked on new ones like their aromatic massaman lamb with raw durian topped with dried coconut apple. They sourced old recipes from cookery books and recipe collections and reworked them, like their refreshing watermelon salad with salmon froth and salmon eggs, now one of the most talked-about — and most popular — dishes on the menu.

3. Boil coconut milk, then quickly blanch vegetables, one at a time. Start with snake beans, then set aside. Do the same with morning glory, banana flowers and bean sprouts. 4. Put the shredded chicken and all the vegetables

except the rose apple in a mixing bowl, then add half of the sauce and gently mix. Put the other half of the sauce on the plate. Pile the salad from the bowl on top, then add the rose apple and garnish with shallots and sesame seeds.

Perayaan Vaisakhi

Kemurniaan Vaisakhi

Teks Alexandra Wong | Terjemahan Yeo Li Shian | Foto ihsan Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia

A Celebration Of Valour. Vaisakhi celebrates the Sikh community’s commitment to uphold values embodied by their religion in their daily lives.

Kami

Perched on the fringe of Kampung Bharu, Gurdwara Tatt Khalsa, the largest place of worship for the Sikh community in Southeast Asia, is an oasis of tranquillity most times of the year. Come 14 April, however, the atmosphere becomes carnival-like as the gurdwara (place of worship) plays host to Vaisakhi, the most important festival in the calendar year for the Sikh community. Dressed in their best attire – men in kurtas and turbans, women in salwar-kameez – thousands of celebrants flock here to enjoy food fairs and musical narrations called kirtan by popular artists specially flown in by the organiser.

One of the most meaningful ways to experience the spirit of Vaisakhi is to take part in langar. The term for a communal kitchen in a gurdwara, langar refers to free vegetarian food prepared by volunteers and served to anyone who walks in, regardless of their faith or background. Everyone sits side by side, often on the floor, to eat. All year round, langar is served three times a day but during Vaisakhi, as many as 12 meals are served round the clock to cater to the spike in visitor numbers. “As long as prayers and performances are going on, there will be meals. We don’t want anyone who walks into our grounds to go hungry,” says Amandeep Singh, Gurdwara Tatt Khalsa’s manager. “The idea behind it is that everyone is equal in the eyes of a Sikh.” At the heart of this custom is seva, a philosophy that describes selfless service and action motivated by pure intentions. Though Vaisakhi originated as a thanksgiving harvest celebration in Punjab, the rice-bowl

WARISAN | Perayaan Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi celebrates the culmination of a centurieslong journey, from the foundation of the faith in 1469, to ensure equality of all people — regardless of race, gender, faith, nationality, or any other identity.

region of India, the festival took on an added dimension in 1699 when the tenth guru – Guru Gobind Singh – established the Khalsa Panth (community of committed Sikhs) to protect the vulnerable against tyranny and oppression. From this day onwards, the title of Singh (which means Lion) was affixed to the name of a male Sikh and Kaur (Princess) to that of a female. At Vaisakhi each year, those ready to join the Khalsa are baptised. The word ‘Khalsa’ means pure, and to join, Sikhs must undergo an initiation known as the Amrit ceremony. Baptised Sikhs commit to not removing or cutting any form of bodily hair, to abstain from using alcohol, tobacco or other intoxicants, adopting a vegetarian lifestyle and not committing adultery. “Vaisakhi celebrates the culmination of a centuries-long journey, from the foundation of the faith in 1469, to ensure equality of all people — regardless of race, gender, faith, nationality, or any other identity,” says Amandeep. Celebrated on a grand scale by over 25 million Sikhs around the world, Vaisakhi preparations typically start days ahead of the actual festival day. The Akhand Paath,

a recital of the 1,430-page Sikh holy scripture, is carried out to signify the start of the celebration. On the actual day, the new Nishan Sahib or flag ensign of the Khalsa is hoisted at every gurdwara. In towns with large Sikh communities, colourful processions called nagar kirtan make their way through streets accompanied by recitals of religious hymns. Since 2015, the Malaysian Punjabi Chamber of Commerce and Industries has collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture to stage My Vaisakhi Fest, a grand showcase of Sikh culture that includes traditional musical and martial arts performances, at the Malaysia Tourism Centre. This year, the event will be held on 28 April.

4 1.~5. Perayaan Vaisakhi merupakan sambutan yang penting di kalangan komuniti Sikh, di mana penganutnya tampil di gurdwara untuk bersembahyang dan menghadiri upacara keagamaan, di samping mengunjungi gerai-gerai makanan dan menikmati persembahan muzik dan kebudayaan Vaisakhi is an important celebration for the Sikh community as devotees head to the gurdwara, where there will be prayers and religious ceremonies, alongside food fairs, musical narrations and cultural performances

Ultimately, Vaisakhi epitomises what religion is meant to do: bring harmony amongst all groups of people. “In the spirit of Vaisakhi, I invite you all to visit a local gurdwara, ask questions, and experience langar first-hand,” says Amandeep. “We hope that this Vaisakhi will open up the doors for a future filled with more harmony and understanding.”

The Filmmaker Jins Shamsuddin was a leading man in Malay cinema, known for his sharp looks and on-screen charisma. Words Siva Sithraputhran

“I had signed a contract for the film and because of that, I lost my place (to study) in England,” he added. The movie, Keadilan Illahi, was the start of a Jins’ long career in Malay cinema, spanning over 50 years. Soon after his debut, Jins caught the attention of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee, arguably the biggest star Malay cinema has ever seen. The very next year, in 1957, Jins played the leading role in Pancha Delima, a film directed by P. Ramlee. And with that, Jins became a fixture in Malayan cinema, with notable leading roles in popular films such as Sarjan Hassan and Si Tanggang.

National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS)

The year was 1956. The young stand-in’s performance in the play impressed a talent scout so much that he was offered a role in a movie. But a workers’ strike delayed filming, upending his plans of study. “Instead of shooting for 45 days (as had been planned), we took nine months to complete the film,” Jins said in an interview in The Star daily in March 2008.

National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS)

Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin hadn’t planned on a career in cinema. He had set his sights on an engineering degree in the U.K., but a chance role in a play changed that.

Heartthrob

Jins’ own aspirations began to grow at the same time. The actor became interested in directing just as the era of colour films was dawning. He debuted as director and lead actor in Bukan Salah Ibu Mengandong in 1969. The movie was a success and notably, starred screen legend P. Ramlee in a supporting role. The very next year, Jins directed Dibelakang Tabir before setting out for the London Film School for a qualification in Motion Picture Technology.

April 2018_Malaysian Icon_Jins Shamsuddin.indd 79

Through 1977 to 1985, Jins continued to develop his craft, directing six movies and writing screenplays. His Esok series of movies drew in eager crowds and paved the way for a clutch of new actors, including Azean Irdawaty and Fauziah Ahmad Daud. Bukit Kepong, perhaps his best work, came in 1981. It was a big-budget production about a real-life incident in 1950, depicting the siege of an isolated police station by communist insurgents. The policemen emerged victors, showing courage under tremendous pressure. The movie was widely praised and won seven awards at the 3rd Malaysia Film Festival in 1982, including for Best Film. Jins directed, produced and played the leading role in Bukit Kepong. His later works included cameos in movies outside the world of Malay cinema. Jins worked well into his seventies and was known for his dedication. Jins was appointed a member of

Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara

Jins’ reputation as a heartthrob was cemented when he portrayed the sharply dressed, sharpfeatured Jefri Zain, a spy character in a series of three films in the mid-1960s. The films – Gerak Kilat, Bayangan Ajal and Jurang Bahaya, came in quick succession and underscored Jins’ boxoffice bankability. The inevitable comparisons to James Bond followed, but Jins was more than just the Malay version of the fictional spy. He became a symbol for the aspirations of Malay cinema.

the Dewan Negara, the upper house of the Malaysian parliament, in 2004. It was a first for an actor in the country. He served two terms as a senator, until 2011. His love for learning continued throughout his life. He earned a Doctorate in Philosophy from Universiti Utara Malaysia in 2010. Jins was born Mohamed Zain bin Shamsuddin in 1935 in the northern Malaysian town of Taiping. He died in 2017 at the age of 81. ■

NO TO DRUGS As part of efforts to champion a drug-free workplace, Malaysia Airlines has enlisted the help of the National Anti-Drugs Agency to provide the necessary expertise, manpower and technical requirements to conduct awareness programmes, including random drug tests on employees. Chief Executive Officer Izham Ismail said the airline is committed to upkeeping the highest standards of safety throughout the organisation, and ensuring all employees adhere to them. “This year, we further affirm our commitment against these serious offences by implementing the Zero Tolerance Policy on the consumption, possession, distribution or selling of drugs and alcohol by any individual at the workplace, he added. The airline will also enhance the visibility of the policy through LED screen displays in its premises to remind staff of the importance of being drug-free.

Passengers wishing to make wheelchair requests can now do so 48 hours prior to departure. The new policy is in line with Malaysia Airlines’ commitment to provide the highest standard of service, including ensuring the safe, convenient and orderly embarkation of passengers with disability. Ad-hoc requests at the check-in counter, arrival gate or onboard, where available, will be on a case-by-case basis for passengers with observable mobility limitations such as pregnancy, old age or physical injuries. Passengers with a disability card can request for the service, subject to wheelchair availability at arrival or departure. For details on how to request for assistance, please see our service guide on page 79.

WHEELCHAIR ASSISTANCE

WORKING TOGETHER Gotong-royong is a Malaysian term for an event where members of a community come together to achieve a common goal, such as cleaning up a neighbourhood or beautifying a common area. Embracing this communal spirit, 60 Malaysia Airlines management and staff members last month volunteered for a gotong-royong to clean 18 check-in counters at Row B, Level 5 of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The activity involved scraping off old stickers, as well as wiping and clearing the area of dust and trash. The aim was to ensure that counters are clean and presentable to customers for a positive travel experience on ground, in addition to providing front-line staff with a comfortable work space. Staff volunteers from MASwings also conducted their own cleaning activities at check-in counters in Kuching, Miri and Bintulu, as well as in Sibu, Labuan, Sandakan and Tawau in east Malaysia.

Safety + service info

Cabin Luggage handling Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.

Portable Electronic Devices (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.

Lithium batteries Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.

Zero tolerance of abuse We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

Bil Musa’s Young Adults is playing onboard this month. We spoke to the singer-songwriter about the inspiration behind the album and why it is about growing up.

How did you get into singing and songwriting?

goingplacesmagazine.com | 92 | April 2018

Ever since I started playing the piano, I always wrote songs. So, songwriting was something that I've always done, it’s just that I did not write down or record any of my songs until I was much older. Singing is also something I only realised I was into at the end of secondary school. I tried doing covers and mash-ups for friends and they sort of encouraged me to write and sing more. Who are your musical influences?

I'm very much into songs that evoke a lot of emotions in a listener. So I would say Adele, Sam Smith, Lana Del Rey and Jhene Aiko. At the same time, I also like songs that are cool and fun or have a lot of character. I'm very into Dua Lipa's work right now. What was the inspiration behind the album, Young Adults?

Young Adults is the perfect example of "art imitates life". It's inspired by young adults – myself, my friends, cousins around my age, my peers, the people I work with – everyone I surround myself with and their struggles with commitment, relationships, money, responsibilities, and transitioning

into an adult. It can get really tough and sometimes you feel like you can't talk to anyone about it but when you write songs about it, it really helps as a form of selfexpression.

You’ve often been compared to Yuna. How do you feel about that?

I'll take it as a positive thing to be compared to someone who has made a name for herself, not only in Malaysia but overseas as well, especially despite having to battle so many stigmas. I listened to her songs when I was in school and I thought she was great. I still do. Aside from your music career, you also juggle other jobs. How do you balance between the two?

This is a question I struggle to answer! Most of the time, my head is just above the water but I'm surviving. It gets overwhelming at times, considering I still have to spend time with my family and friends, maintain a social life and try to keep fit in the middle of it all. It's mostly a mental game, and to be honest, I like being busy. People who know me well will know this because I'm a restless person. I just have to keep my focus and try my best to be on top of things. InsyaAllah, it will all be worth it!

The Time is Now – Craig David The Time Is Now is Craig David’s seventh studio album and features an array of guest appearances by the likes of JP Cooper, Bastille and AJ Tracey. The album contains notably less U.K. garage than its predecessor and instead features trendy and contemporary sounds from the charts. Of this album, David says, “This is authentic me, doing what I love, just like I did when I was an unknown artist.”
