COVER BY LO SIENTO
Graphic Communication / Barcelona
After beginning his career in Industrial Design, Borja Martínez moved to London in 1999 to study Graphic Design at the London College of Printing.
In 2006, he founded his own studio called Lo Siento, where he began developing different graphic design and art direction projects for clients such as Sandro Desii, The Pinker Tones, Martin Berasategui, Roca, Año Xacobeo, Martini, El Bulli, Macaco or Blanca (The Milk processing farm). In 2010, FAD (Fomento de las Artes Decorativas) presented Lo Siento with the Grand Laus Award, perhaps the most important award for graphic design in Spain.
The main feature of its work is its physical and material approach to graphic solutions. The studio creates a field where graphics and industrial design go hand in hand, and constantly search to relate their works to artisan processes. The idea of the cover is to convey passion and design within a background of fall and winter surroundings. More info about Lo Siento at: www.losiento.net
Winter is coming, both in literal and metaphorical terms. Indeed, four years after the beginning of the financial crisis, the global economic outlook remains uncertain at best. This is the case even more so in Spain, where the situation is particularly grim. However, even in these bleakest of times, creativity and art haven’t stopped beating, bringing comfort and hope to millions, much like the glowing heart on our cover. The streets of Spain are still full of people, talking, dreaming, and creating. Hundreds of small personal projects are emerging, driven by the sheer energy of individuals determined to build a better future.
SPAIN arts & culture is proud to bring some of this energy to the US, with amazing projects such as ‘Latino US: Cotidiano’, a dazzling photographic journey of the daily reality of the fifty million of US residents that share a Hispanic origin. Courtesy of New York Times writer, Sarah Wildman, you will also find an in-depth look at the growing number of high-end Spanish restaurants that in the wake of Chef Jose Andrés’ huge success, are taking the American food scene by storm. Our interest in modernity doesn’t mean we have forgotten our invaluable legacy; Picasso will open at the Guggenheim in New York, Velázquez at the Meadows Museum in Dallas, and masterpieces of The Prado at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. Winter is also our favorite movie season. Dozens of recent Spanish films will be featured at festivals all across the country, while our followers in Washington DC are warmly invited to our bi-monthly Cine-Club at the Embassy of Spain. We hope through this program you rediscover the spirit of Spain’s art and culture that takes moments of despair and turns them into opportunities.

LATINO US: COTIDIANO BY Claudi Carreras and Frank Goodyear
Claudi Carreras, Spanish independent curator, and Frank Goodyear, curator of photographs at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, recently discussed Carreras’s “Latino US” an investigation into Hispanic photographers who are using the camera to focus attention on the everyday lives of Hispanics living in the Americas. Carreras has spent the past 20 months visiting working photographers and reviewing their recent work. A selection of the photographs he has encountered will be published in November 2012 in a book commissioned by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. In conjunction with the Smithsonian Latino Center and its executive director Eduardo Díaz, Carreras will assist in the organization of an exhibition of this work at the National Portrait Gallery in 2015. The following dialogue is an excerpt from an e-mail conversation between Carreras and Goodyear held in June 2012. Frank Goodyear [FG]: What prompted you to begin looking at the work of Hispanic photographers in the Americas? Claudi Carreras [CC]: It has been almost ten years since I started a trip throughout Latin America for a newspaper from Barcelona called La Vanguardia. My idea was to present a series of articles that featured the most representative works of contemporary photographers living in the region. Normally, the images we receive in Europe and the United States from Latin America are full of the exoticism and ritualism that is associated with those lands. The most common works to be published come from correspondents or agencies that spend little time in those countries and that present a very biased, incomplete, and partial reality.

They almost always insist on the most common stereotyped topics. These representations that reflect the preconceptions of syncretic rituals, indigenous communities, lush landscapes, epic revolutionaries, poverty and violence are also widely accepted within the art world. That is to say, the traditional view we receive from Latin America presents a very limited view of everything that actually happens there. In this series for La Vanguardia we wanted to show local perspectives through works produced by photographers residing in the region. For that, I traveled for two years through eighteen countries to find notable individuals. Using the materials I collected and the contacts I made, I was able to propose editorial projects and exhibitions.
Š Ricardo Cases
One of the things that I noticed on this trip ‌ is that many authors who started their journeys in Latin America now live in the United States. In almost all of the countries I visited, interviewees spoke to me of great photographers that had immigrated to the U.S. and are now working there. Without a doubt, the United States has always been a beacon light for many Latin American creators, some of whom have become part of North American institutions or who have taken academic courses there. I believe that one cannot try to approach the Latino world today without having in mind what is happening in the United States. Historically, the ties between creators in Latin America and the United States have been undeniable, but now there is also an exciting two-way road. FG: Were there particular photographers whose work you had previously known about?
CC: The strategies I used to get to know these photographers always varied. Of course, before visiting a city to request interviews, I searched all the channels available, including publications and the Internet. However, this information is very general and there is a cost to finding professionals this way. Luckily in these past years I have been able to establish a network of important contacts and it has not been difficult to find support for a first review in each city. In my opinion, it is essential to travel and personally interview people.
Most surprisingly, I found that little communication existed between different cities in the United States. Beyond the most acclaimed and well-known names in the country, there are not many networks or ways to communicate, making it difficult to reach out to the creators. I believe that this project can help establish contacts between the producers and image distributors, and will result in more accurate views of Latino life.
10
FG: What issues or questions were these photographers addressing in their work? CC: The creative issues are multifaceted and there are many things that these photographers were investigating. My first objective for this book was to try to break from the most frequent stigmas associated with the Latino population in the U.S. I think that the figure of a poor, illegally employed Latino that is not well integrated into society is already well represented. The reality is a lot more diverse. There are Latinos at every level of society in this country.
©Alinka Echevarria
It is undeniable that many photographers continue to focus on these clichés, and it is a reality that cannot be nor should be denied. But for “Latino US” I wanted to look at the daily life of the Latino world in this country. I wanted to move away from predominant stereotypes and present different artists from this complicated, multifaceted perspective. The initial questions included: how do we see ourselves? What do we do on a day to day basis? How are we linked to our cultures and our backgrounds? FG: What were you seeing in their work that interested you? Or surprised you?
CC: There are many things that have surprised and interested me along this journey, but I am especially interested in works on the border between different photographic genres—projects that give me a partial view of a certain reality with traces of ownership and metaphoric overtones. They can’t be considered strictly documentary because they form part of a complicated pattern in which aesthetic intentions and formal investigations of each author are displayed. I’ve always believed that the most interesting things are developed along the borders. I think that the creative forces of the Latino universe offer a breath of fresh air for international creation.
“Latino US”, the book, will be published in November 2012 and presented along a digital projection of the photographs at different US cities with a presentation/dialogue between the curator and the photographers. The project is directed and coordinated by the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain as part of the SPAIN arts & culture program.

Picasso’s deceptively simple use of isolated black, white, and gray hues belies the extraordinary complexity and power of these expressive works, which purge color in order to highlight their formal structure. The exhibition traces the artist’s unique vision thematically throughout his whole body of work, including early monochromatic blue and rose paintings, gray-toned Cubist canvases, elegant and austere neoclassical portraits and nudes, Surrealist-inspired figures, forceful and somber scenes depicting the atrocities of war, allegorical still lives, vivid interpretations of art-historical masterpieces, and the electric, highly sexualized canvases of Picasso’s last years.

As a leading museum in Spain, and one of the great museums of the world, The Prado is known for its collection of European masterworks, and for the largest collection of Spanish art ever assembled. ‘Portrait of Spain’ will bring 100 works to Houston, and will give visitors a chance to not only see rare masterpieces firsthand, but allow them to reflect on the development of Spanish painting.
Among the artists included in the exhibition are El Greco, Zurbarán, Velázquez, and Goya, as well as foreign artists who worked in Spain. These include Titian, Rubens, Tiepolo and Mengs.

Dinner at the homesick Cafe BY Sarah Wildman Sarah Wildman is a visiting scholar at SAIs Johns Hopkins a frequent contributor to the New York Times and 2010 Peter Weitz prize winner from the German Marshall Fund.
There is, perhaps, no day more American than the fourth of July, the day we celebrate our independence from the British, wave our flags, and set off a battle’s worth of fireworks. Most of us in this country find ourselves at barbecues on the fourth, and, for me, this year was no exception; what was different was what was on the table: a prominent political journalist had brought not hamburgers or hotdogs; instead, he’d come accompanied by an enormous bowl of gazpacho. Not so very long ago Spanish cooking meant very little to Americans. If they knew it, it was a confused knowledge, haphazardly mixed in with Latin American flavors, tastes that had nothing to do with the Iberian Peninsula. There were, of course, restaurants that called themselves Spanish, and, to prove it, served glutinous paellas made from instant rice and unidentifiable products of the sea. But “tapas” (let alone “pintxos”) was not a word people readily understood, gravitated towards, or emulated. The basic flavors of Spain – the nutty olive oils, the pan con tomate with really, really good crushed tomato, the olives themselves, the tuna, bacalao (cod), merluza (hake), the pulpo (octopus), the jamon, all of that was missing, misunderstood, or misused. There was none of the super fresh materia prima that is essential for the Spanish kitchen. There was also, perhaps even more importantly, almost none of the boisterous conviviality associated with informal Spanish dining – the shared plate, the standing meal, the small glass of wine. But in the last twenty years a revolution has taken place. Conceived and gestated through a mix of globalization, travel, word of mouth about Spain’s alta cocina – and then midwifed by a handful of seminal chefs: America is now in love with the cocina española. Words like tortilla and jamon and pimentos roll easily off the American tongue. And we don’t blink at eating sardines or anchovies, fresh and whole, on bread, not disguised by sauces, or rendered unrecognizable. “Small plates” have become ubiquitous.

Indeed, in my father’s hometown, a small place in the far northwest corner of Massachusetts, it was not Italian, that old mainstay, but a tapas joint that opened recently across the street from a century-old diner. It’s actually pretty good. My father laughed to see it: “It’s like they were expecting you!” he said.
Clarke
For me, a guiri with a strange and intense love for Spain and all her regions, these restaurants are a link, a visceral, emotional connection, a means of remembering, a way to never really leave. After some years living in Madrid - and months of deep exploration into Cataluña, Pais Vasco, Galicia, Andalucia, Extremadura --writing stories on culture and travel and politics and food – I crave membrillo with my manchego; my comfort food is tortilla, especially when it is a little runny inside; pan con tomate is my favorite breakfast; I will kiss you if you make a good pistou with egg.
Recently I called up two of the chefs I admire most, from two sides of the American-Spanish revolution, and ask them about how this came about, this not-so-nuevo Spain-o-philia. I talked to José Andrés, himself, of course, a son of Spain, whose kitchens – both physical and televised- did much to introduce and mainstream the word tapas to the American lexicon, who, through his unrestrained, tremendous and evident joy in his home country has pushed his pride of Spain to the forefront of all our eating, especially in the District of Columbia.
And I tracked down Alex Raij, an American by birth, an Argentine by heritage – who uses the Iberian tastes she has come to love through her own gastronomic exploration, from childhood, from her husband and partner – Eder Montero – himself a Basque – to push forward the Spanish flavors with a new world twist in her Manhattan restaurants – El Quinto Pino, Txikito, and the newest Brooklyn outpost, La Vara, a Spanish-Jewish wink at the period before (and during) the reign of the reyes catolicos.
“Spanish cooking didn’t start twenty years ago,” clucks Andrés, chiding me to remember my history – (“Plymouth rock!” he laughs, complaining about what Americans are taught as kids, “Spaniards came to Florida in the 1500s!”) “Spaniards came during the World Fair in the 1960s and stayed. They opened restaurants. But there were restaurants that were old school Spain and Spain is constantly reinventing itself, even now. What you found then was heavy flavors, garlicky flavors not glamour.” Jaleo Tapas Bar © Greg

Andrés chafes when I say he helped changed that. “Clemente Bocos,” he says, citing a mentor, “his restaurant on 15th street between 8th and 9th in New York– that was the first true Spanish restaurant, with high-end, quality food. A lot of people give me credit for tapas in America - and I give myself high marks - but the truth is I was smart enough to build upon a foothold laid by others. Jaleo,” his DC tapas place “was the first restaurant in America to really believe in tapas.”
“We are all overeating. Small portions are a hidden treasure. It allows the most amazing control over a meal; the possibility of creating a multi-course tasting menu that only you could have before in an expensive restaurants.”
Jaleo Tapas Bar © Greg Powers
“What Jaleo really did was to believe that small was good. That sharing was very important. It was almost reinventing a new way of eating: now everyone is encouraging sharing. This is the big revolution. This is huge because it is very difficult to reorient a country like America with its big plate portions. I am very happy Spain has been able to help America to change its eating habits.
Alex Raij also believes in the tapas tradition. She met her husband in 1999 while working at a Manhattan restaurant called Meigas, it was a Gallego place, nominally – and she started traveling back and forth to Spain, learning, picking up flavor profiles, starting to invent. “I fell in love with the tapas tradition,” she says, “It’s where every generation meets! Plus tapas are a social tradition. It’s what happens when you eat standing up.”
But, even in 2004, when she started planning her menus, Raij says, many of the flavors of Spain weren’t common here. “People weren’t eating Romesco,” she says, “it was hard to find a gazpacho that wasn’t salsa.” So she pushed back. “We embraced all those things that had become a little taboo here. Mayonnaise and hard cooked egg; anchovies. One thing I loved to Spain is that their food isn’t that subject to fashion.” She set about embracing that, and then tweaking it. “I wanted tradition that was authentic, but with a really fresh approach which was really current, a little lighter, a little cleaner, but still with the idea to emphasize the quality of the fat, to buy the really good ingredients that are taken for granted in Spain.” Raij calls it a “real privilege” working with this history behind her; she hopes her kitchens are seen as part of a “massive celebration” of Spanish culinary tradition. She got into it at a moment where there was leniency, even expectation, for experimentation. Raij’s kitchens are smaller than those of Andrés, they are a little edgier, they take the dishes in a different direction. But they are born

of the same place. “The timing was ripe,” she says. She notes, with approval, what Carlos Abellan did at Comerç24 and Tapaç24, the restaurants in Barcelona that are foodiemeccas, destinations for those who want to experience the transitions in the cocina, to taste the tweaks. It was, she says, about “rejuvenating the traditional tapas.” She notes that it is not only on this soil that Spanish food is being reinvented even as it is rediscovered, but in Spain as well. I asked Andrés if he could pick one, iconic, meal what would it be. “Garlic shrimp and a glass of gazpacho,” he says, immediately, no pause. “It celebrates the farm and the most astonishing ingredient Spain brings – garlic – and the seafood of Spain and the coastline. And then we have the garden and its creativity: a salad that we transform into a soup, with our amazing olive oil. It is,” he says “the perfect resumé of Spanish cooking.”
Andrés and Raij are just two, in a growing sea of really good, really faithful, and even unfaithful, Spanish chefs in America. If Andrés has his way, the next crop of fantastic Spanish cooks will be nurtured in this country as well. In May he became Dean of Spanish Studies at the newly christened International Culinary Center in New York. Forever known as the French Culinary Institute, the new moniker is another acknowledgement of the seismic changes afoot in American eating. When I left that July 4th barbeque the host said she was glad my family and I could make it. “We thought you’d be in Spain,” she said. Well, I said, nodding to the guy who brought in gazpacho, at least, when I am here, I know the tastes have followed me home. SOME SPANISH RESTAURANTS NOT TO BE MISSED

Xavier Montsalvatge (1912 – 2002) is one of the most representative figures from what is called the “lost generation” of composers from Spain, between those from the times of the Second Republic and those of today. Nonetheless, his musical output has gained substantial international renown and he has become an important point of reference within the contemporary music scene in Spain itself.
