2014 Spanish Cultural Program U.S. & Canada Fall / Winter
COVER BY PABLO AMARGO With his illustrations Pablo Amargo wishes to show the strangeness of the world, but what he achieves is showing us the strangeness of his own world. Through the use of visual paradoxes his work depicts with precision the urban landscapes, the contemporary paintings, the botanical gardens, the vintage pictures and life occurrences that he so much admires. Pablo Amargo lives in Oviedo. A regular collaborator of newspapers and magazines (The New York Times, El País Semanal, The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, La Vanguardia, Jot Down Magazine…), Pablo is also an international acclaimed book illustrator as well as creator of various books covers, posters, and marketing and advertising pieces.
His work has been recognized with several important illustration awards in the course of his professional career. Among others, the most important are the Spanish Illustration Awards (the National Spanish Award and the Lazarillo Award), the Book Bank Award of Venezuela, the Golden Plaque at the Biennial of Illustration in Bratislava and several important awards in the U.S. including the Excellence Illustration Annual awarded by Communication Arts 2013 and 2014. In addition one of his posters was Selected Winner in American Illustration. In 2014 his work for The Boston Globe was recognized with a Silver Medal from the Society of Newspaper Designer’s Awards in the U.S. His book Casualidad won the CJ Picture Book Award (Korea 2012), the Gold European Design Award 2012 (Finlandia 2012), the Junceda Iberia Award (Spain 2012), the Motiva Award (Spain 2012), and Laus Bronze (Spain 2012). A park, one chilly morning in late September. A gardener steadily sweeps up the dead leaves. At first sight it seems tedious work, but look again and you will discover that in his routine the gardener has slowly drawn a huge and beautiful cat. We feel that Pablo Amargo’s illustration on our cover perfectly captures the spirit of the season, a darker and colder time for sure, but also a most fertile ground for imagination and playfulness. Two magical elements that are the key ingredients of this Fall/Winter program, from the powerful public art created by Daniel Canogar for New York or Jaume Plensa for Chicago, to the ingenious bus stop designed by mmmm... for Baltimore and the surprising exhibit on augmented reality, ‘Think with Your Hands’ that will open in September in Arlington, VA. The power of imagination distinguishes as well the visionary work of our greatest masters. Three wonderful shows will open in the coming months: Goya in Boston, Picasso and Dalí in St. Petersburg, FL, and El Greco in Washington DC. Simultaneously, prestigious editor Valerie Miles will present ‘A Thousand Forests in One Acorn’ a unique book tracing the original spark of imagination that gave birth to the work of the most important contemporary Spanish-language writers. However, these are but a few of the long list of events that we have planned for the season, all throughout the US and Canada. Now, have a good look at this catalog, find what you like and allow us to help you make the best use of the long evenings ahead.

The Anatomy of Art & Technology Interacting with Augmented Reality through «Think with Your Hands» José A. Ortiz Executive Director, Artisphere, Voted Best of Arlington for Cutting Edge Art by Washingtonian Magazine in 2013.
Cynthia Connolly Visual Arts Curator, Artisphere — www.artisphere.com
The beautifully illustrated journals in the ground-breaking exhibition Think with Your Hands - Illustrated Journals Come to Life Through Augmented Reality represent not only the highest technical skill, but also allow the viewer to experience another dimension through the use of augmented reality. The link between creativity and innovation is central to Artisphere’s mission to connect audiences to the artists that are at the forefront of utilizing new technologies in their work. This union, masterfully accomplished in this exhibition, reminds us that there is always more to discover, explore and integrate into our lives.
The following dialogue is an excerpt from a conversation between Cynthia Connolly, Artisphere’s visual arts curator, Nuria Rodríguez, curator of the exhibition and director of UNIT experimental, and the Spanish illustrators and graphic designers Pep Carrió and Isidro Ferrer. Cynthia Connolly [CC]: When you decided to create an exhibition to showcase augmented reality, how did Pep Carrió and Isidro Ferrer come to mind as artistic collaborators? Nuria Rodríguez [NR]: The project came, in part, from an interest in new technology, especially in augmented reality, as a tool to invigorate the dialogue between spectator and work of art. Initially, the goal was to utilize interactive apps on mobile devices and tablets, dedicating their use to cultural events, publications, museums, etc. When we discussed the possibilities with Isidro and Pep, they became involved with the project and let us work with a lot of freedom and a high degree of experimentation.

We had planned an exhibition of both artists’ portfolios as one of the activities in Ilustrafic, the I International Congress of Illustration, Art, and Visual Culture, which took place for the first time in Spain and brought together over 300 professionals, artists, and instructors in illustration and art. Combining technology with Isidro and Pep’s work turned out to be an excellent idea, which resulted in the exhibition Think with Your Hands and the book Abierto todo el día: Los cuadernos de Isidro Ferrer y Pep Carrió. The exhibition’s success was so great that we were able to expand it internationally thanks to support from Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. We’ve traveled the show to Madrid and Miami and are now opening in Washington DC. [CC]: How did you respect the original work – yet expand the idea or concept without degrading the original work?
[NR]: The whole time, we’ve counted on the collaboration of the artists, and they asked us not to make the use of technology superficial and trivial. We’ve worked hard to maintain that premise. One could say that ever since the beginning of UNIT, we’ve used these tools to foster “the conscious use of technology to widen the artists’ creative limits,” a motto that has become our trademark. On a technical level, we’ve worked to maintain utmost respect for the original characteristics of these pieces so that their digital counterparts would not interfere with their interpretation. © Pep Carrió
[CC]: How did UNIT get started and why? How many employees, visionaries and dreamers are part of UNIT and what are their roles?
10
[NR]: UNIT is an interdisciplinary team composed of researchers in diverse technological and artistic fields from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Valencia, dedicated to the study and creation of images, and researchers from the School of Engineering and Computer Science, specialized in technological innovation. Since the very beginning, we’ve embraced the synergy that comes from fusing art and technology, conceiving each project like a personal and collective challenge. The team varies according to the demands of the project, ranging from the core five-person group up to a total of fifteen collaborators during key moments. On the creative side we find designers, artists, animators, and theorists while the technical side includes experts in programming, 3D modeling, and app design. [CC]: What is the difference between augmented reality and animation? Where do you see augmented reality in everyday life?
© Isidro Ferrer

[NR]: Augmented reality allows for the superimposition of layers of information onto the real world. These can be informative images, texts, or 3D models. We use animation to give life to the elements that we show through augmented reality via mobile devices. In this way, animation is one of the tools that contributes to the experience that we understand as augmented reality. Regarding its use in daily life, the field is so broad that it’s difficult to specify. It’s a continuously developing technology that we’ll soon see in a variety of media, cultural as well as commercial. The possibilities are infinite.
[CC]: How hard was it for you to relinquish all artistic control of your artwork to another group of artists (UNIT) to then expand your work both visually but also aurally? How do you feel when another artist re-interprets your work, in this case, through augmented reality? Pep Carrió [PC]: Think with Your Hands is based on mutual trust. From the first meeting, when we outlined this project, we agreed to an experience that was completely new to all of us. We were guinea pigs. Actually, we let UNIT have a lot of freedom when working with our images, and only when we saw that something didn’t work did we mutually agree to exchange an image for another. It was very interesting to see all the new ideas that came from material originally created for conventional reproduction.
Isidro Ferrer [IF]: Not hard at all. It was very natural, since we began with complete trust in the University’s team of researchers and workers. Now, seeing the result, I feel happy, flattered, and surprised. Happy, because of the scope of this magnificent project; flattered, because of the interest, respect, and great care with which they have worked with our contribution; and surprised by the unexpected and brilliant result. [CC]: Now that you have seen augmented reality used to expand your artwork, how does this change the way you see or develop new work both for you as a fine artist and commercial artist?
11
[PC]: It’s still too early to say, but it’s clear that these new technologies are going to be gradually incorporated into publishing projects and exhibitions. This is already a reality. The creator now has a new tool, a new way of seeing and tackling projects. I think that these new possibilities will continue to be naturally incorporated into projects in the coming years. [IF]: For the time being the greatest change has been one of personal perception. The birth of a growing interest in the possibilities of interaction that technology enables.

Think With Your Hands Illustrated Journals Come to Life through Augmented Reality Think with Your Hands brings together the illustrated journals of Spanish illustrators and graphic designers Pep Carrió and Isidro Ferrer in a unique collaboration between artists and software developers. The exhibit takes an unusual twist where animation, video and augmented reality bring to life over sixty illustrations of two of Spain’s most interesting graphic artists working today. This connection between creativity and innovation is central to Artisphere’s focus on artists working at the forefront of new technologies.

Remains of Regional Identities
Javier Carvajal © Universidad de Navarra
Curated by Javier Antón, this exhibition deals with the absorption of modernity in Spain, following the theme of this year’s Venice Biennale of Architecture: Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014. Contextualizing the historical, social, political and economical situation of the country, this exhibition uses collage and film as tools to display how modernity has blended with the remains of regional identities through a particular case study: the twin houses built by Javier Carvajal in Somosaguas, 1967. A panel discussion will follow the opening of this exhibition, with architecture experts Kenneth Frampton, Alberto Campo Baeza, Iñaki Ábalos (TBC), and Alejandro Zaera-Polo (TBC), moderated by Javier Antón.

Tactical Urbanisms for Expanding Megacities

In 2030, the world’s population will be a staggering eight billion people. Of these, two-thirds will live in cities. Most will be poor. With limited resources, this uneven growth will be one of the greatest challenges faced by societies across the globe. Over the next years, city authorities, urban planners and designers, economists, and many others will have to join forces to avoid major social and economical catastrophes, working together to ensure these expanding megacities will remain habitable.
The Spanish initiative Inteligencias Colectivas participates in this international debate together with five interdisciplinary teams of researchers and practitioners, to examine new architectural possibilities for six global metropolises: Hong Kong, Istanbul, Lagos, Mumbai, New York, and Rio de Janeiro.

In fall 2014, Mallorcan artist Bernardí Roig will create a multi-faceted Intersections project at The Phillips Collection by installing six sculptural works in unexpected interior and exterior spaces of the museum, challenging visitors’ perception and experience.
In Presence - Absence, Roig addresses the existential dualities of entrapment and liberation, blinding and illumination, absence and presence, and the ideas of memory and temporality. Typical of the artist’s work are the cruel-looking white plaster figures cast from real people, often cornered or crushed against walls, doors, or twisting in pain. By including the element of light‚ whether a single light blub, neon tubes, or fluorescent lights‚ Roig’s work blends minimalist forms with highly charged content, expressive of anxiety and loneliness.

Storming Times Square © Daniel Canogar, 2014
Using methods of public intervention and video installation, Storming Times Square is born from a desire to have viewers project themselves, literally and metaphorically, onto their immediate environments. Engaging individuals as spectators and participants, a staged interaction will take place between a “stormed” site and collected imagery of a virtual public.
During the first phase of the project in July participants will be invited to crawl and be creative over a green-screen surface while being captured by an overhead video camera. The result will be a dynamic video animation with both realistic and abstract forms that will be screened on LED billboards in Times Square every night of September at midnght. In this piece participants become part of a moving image artwork, with their movements layered with others to form a collective work of moving bodies.

moving forward, looking back An exploration of Spanish legacy in the Southwest
JANIRE NÁJERA Janire Nájera is a photojournalist based between Wales (UK) and Bilbao (Basque Country). Her work concerns the documentation of communities around the globe that have been displaced due to changing social and economic climates. — movingforwardlookingback.us
Moving Forward, Looking Back was the selected project of the open call `Spaniards´ organized by Spain - USA Foundation through the online profesional network SPAINred to promote the presence, history and cultural legacy of Spain in the USA through a contemporary perspective. The resulting artistic explorations will be presented as a travelling exhibition and a bilingual publication that will open in Washington in early 2015.
This project, which combines photography, video and sound, started in March 2014 with a road trip across the Southwest in the USA. I decided to travel along the Old Spanish Trail, following in the footsteps of trader Antonio Armijo, who in 1829-30 completed the first recorded journey between New Mexico and California, linking both colonial outposts. Along the journey I met with many Spanish descendants who still proudly celebrate their Spanish heritage. I started in Santa Fe, where I spent two weeks preparing the logistics for the trip and visiting pueblos such as Truchas, Cundiyo, Chimayo, Galisteo, Española, Ojo Caliente, Regina and Gallina. Almost all of the descendants that I met were over 50 years old, this age group being the most interested in their genealogy. I interviewed and photographed many of them in an attempt to understand how they feel about their identity, hoping to gather and preserve their oral stories before they are lost or diluted over time. At the end of March I spent a few days in Abiquiu, which was an important last stop for traders and explorers before heading

west. Today, Abiquiu is famous as the home of the artist Georgia O’Keefe and is visited by many tourists keen to engage her life and work. However, there are many more layers of history still being explored by the local community. On the 31st of March I began the road trip, leaving from the plaza in Abiquiu alongside photographer Matt Wright, who documented the landscapes we crossed in our journey.
With Armijo´s brief diary in hand and an RV from 1984, wherever possible, we followed the route that he originally traversed. We kept as far from the freeways as we could and camped in the wild as much as possible in the hope of experiencing something of what it might have been like to travel within these impressive and sometimes imposing landscapes, as Armijo did in 1829. Despite rejecting the signs and infrastructure along the route, it was almost impossible to imagine the hardships that the original caravan party of 60 men and 100 mules must have faced.
We travelled northwest from New Mexico and spent a night by Ute Monument in Colorado before crossing the state line near the Four Corners. Once in Arizona we drove near Monument Valley and arrived to Glen Canyon where we visited the area known as the “Crossing of the Fathers,” which today is submerged beneath the waters of Lake Powell. After a day of rest we continued onto Kanab and eventually St George in Utah before descending into Nevada. We camped at Valley of Fire then
28
continued on to Las Vegas where we met up with the President of the Old Spanish Trail Association, who offered a wealth of information about the history of the trail, the organisation and its plans for the future. For me, the hardships we experienced were related to the lack of commodities we have grown accustomed to being readily available, such as electricity, water, gas, internet, fresh bread and coffee. Even with the modern convenience of a motor vehicle, some days were not easy as Orwell, our modern day mule, had very little ground clearance or power which made certain elements of the journey difficult as we tried to access some of the less developed paths that Armijo would have used. One of the first places we visited in California was Resting Springs, near Tecopa, a small desert oasis with a rich heritage as a vital resting place for the traders, Indians and trappers who passed through this tough environment. It was here that I was fortunate enough to meet with some of the descendants of the first traders to leave New Mexico and settle in California, looking for better land and a less hostile climate.
Upon reaching Los Angeles we visited San Gabriel Mission, once the key destination in California for travellers from the east to trade blankets for horses and mules. I interviewed some of the Padres and some of the descendants of the original settlers that founded El Pueblo de Los Angeles in 1781. From these men and

women I was able to gain a clearer understanding of how Spanish heritage is celebrated in California today and what traditions still remain, as the yearly nine miles walk of Los Pobladores or the Blessing of the Animals, for example. Most of the people I encountered in New Mexico and California defined themselves as Americans who are really proud of their Spanish heritage. Most of them also celebrated the fact that, as a result of inter-racial marriages during the last three centuries, on top of Spanish blood, they also have Native American, Mexican and a variety of European genetics. Some have pursued extensive genealogical research and traced their family tree back 400 years to Spain. Others didn’t have a special interest in this field but spoke Spanish and felt the influence of traditions introduced to the Southwest by explorers, soldiers and missionaries since the 1500s. Moving Forward, Looking Back has allowed me to experience a physical journey across the Old Spanish Trail, historically known as the most arduous pack mule trail across the Southwest. But many more journeys, some of them more metaphorical, have collided during the past two months; the journey across history, before and after the Spanish got to the Americas, the journey through the lives of the people I met during my travels and also my personal journey of self-discovery through the perceptions of people who feel proud of their Spanish heritage.

RosalÍa Mowgli: Portraits of Spain
Rosalía and her musicians Didac Ruiz and Xavi Lozano combine a rich guitar performance with original goatskin percussion instruments from the lost memory of Spain. With the aim to unearth our aboriginal heritage, they recall the voices of American Indians, both from the north and the south, who represent an essential inspiration of her work. Guitarist, composer, vocalist, percussionist, arranger, and songwriter Rosalía Mowgli is a very original musician. Her music is a fascinating encounter of guts and beauty. She plays original songs and brave arrangements of unknown Spanish folk.

Founded in 1978, Ballet Nacional de España is an ambassador of Spanish culture. The dance company has been internationally acclaimed by audience and critics, obtaining various awards. Under the direction of Antonio Najarro, BNE stages a wide variety of works representing classical, folklore and contemporary dance. Sorolla, Najarro’s most recent work which premiered in Madrid last summer, is inspired by the beloved Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla’s Vision of Spain collection, 14 monumental murals commissioned by and installed to this day in the Hispanic Society of America museum in Manhattan.
