There’s nothing like spending the fall and winter months intrigued and captivated by a good read. That’s what the characters created by AmericanSpanish design team Walter Martin & Paloma Muñoz seem to suggest in our cover, suspended in the middle of a surrealistic winter setting. This season is also the perfect time to read and learn more about Spain’s influence in the Americas, from America’s First City to one of the largest collections of Spanish art. 2015 marks the 450th anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the continental United States, established by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565. As America’s First City prepares to commemorate this joyous occasion, Washington, D.C. will host the landmark exhibition “Designing America: Spain’s Imprint in the U.S.”, which will highlight Spain’s important contributions to the construction of the United States territory, landscape and cities, from the first settlements to the present day. We will also celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the Meadows Museum in Dallas. Fascinated by El Prado Museum’s spectacular collection of Spanish masterpieces, Texas philanthropist and oil financier Algur H. Meadows began his own collection of Spanish art. Today, the Meadows Museum is home to one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. Photography, film, performing arts, design exhibitions, dance, you name it. This season has something for everyone! We invite you to flip through this catalog and pick your favorite events. See you there!

MoMA PS1 announces Andrés Jaque / Office for Political Innovation as the winner of the annual Young Architects Program (YAP) in New York. WHEN
Through September 7 WHERE
MoMA PS1 22-25 Jackson Ave, Long Island City New York, NY
Now in its 16th edition, the Young Architects Program at MoMA and MoMA PS1 has been committed to offering emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present innovative projects, challenging each year’s winners to develop an outdoor installation at MoMA PS1 that provides shade, seating, and water.
Andrés Jaque, drawn from among five finalists, designed a temporary urban landscape for the 2015 Warm Up summer music series in MoMA PS1’s outdoor courtyard. The winning project, COSMO opened at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City last June. This year’s unique construction, COSMO, is a moveable artifact, made out of customized irrigation components, to make visible and enjoyable the so-far hidden urbanism of pipes we live by.

Summer Pavilion on Governors Island 2015
Izaskun Chinchilla Architects is a Spanish architectural office and winner of the 2015 City of Dreams Competition –the first non-American winner ever. Their design takes inspiration from nature to create an innovative and flexible structure that directly engages with local communities and familiar materials. Flowers have the ability to respond to the natural environment, growing and morphing to remain in balance with nature. The designers believe architecture must adopt a similar responsiveness, adapting to uncertain budgets, social change and ecological dynamics naturally, beautifully and intuitively.
This design serves as a sheltered gathering place for people to meet, learn about the arts programs on the island, engage with performances or lectures, and enjoy the history of Governors Island.

DESIGNING AMERICA Spain’s Architectural and Urban Cultural Legacy in the U.S.

The arrival of the Spanish in the Americas in 1492 launched Spain on an unprecedented adventure. It was the first European nation to reach the American continent and put a large part of it on the map. These discoveries were not limited to what is now known as Latin America; much of the United States was also first charted by the Spanish expeditions. In 1513, 21 years after Columbus’ journey, Ponce de León reached Florida. From this moment, Spanish exploration gradually revealed the continent: the coast from Florida to Canada, the south and middle of the present-day United States, California and, in the 18th Century, the Pacific coast as far north as Alaska. Current place names bear witness to this across the whole country.
But the Spanish did not just explore the present-day United States; they remained for a long time, leaving a deep mark. Towns, presidios and missions were established, and vernacular architecture, urban planning and the landscape— transformed by the introduction of extensive livestock farming—still bear their influence. The territory they encountered took the form of a frontier: the boundary of the unknown and the uncontrolled. In order to take possession of it, a system of points on the map was devised. Elements distributed throughout the territory (missions, presidios, villages and cities) formed networks in which each one had a specific function. These have left a clear mark on the region, and they often are the origin of the current urban and territorial structure.
Communicating these points generates lines: routes connecting the settlements for defense, supply and trade. Among these, the most significant were the Caminos Reales: the overland routes, radiating from Mexico City, establishing communications between provinces. As important, if not more, were navigable routes through sea and rivers such as the Mississippi.

Gradual settlement upon the structures of points and lines led to the progressive occupation and exploitation of areas of territory. Graphic evidence of this initial stage has been found in such places as Florida, Puerto Rico and Saint Louis, MO. This led to a structure appearing on the territory as a pattern. The Spanish property system was based upon land grants made by the State to individuals or institutions, often as ranches for livestock farming. Borders delimiting areas of influence between states also constructed territory. They were often drawn as abstract theoretical limits; thus, their delimitation was followed by the exploration and surveying of the territory they contained. Spain initially advanced its frontier through gradual expansion; borders with other countries were only demarcated after the appearance of French and English settlements in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. The present-day United States was formed by gradually expanding its borders through purchase or annexation treaties. Many of these, to the west and the south, were first established with respect to the Spanish possessions.
The Spanish occupation of the territory was consolidated by the establishment of cities. Their founding was a systematic process regulated by the Laws of the Indies, which enumerate the characteristics of the location—land, climate, water Silvia Pérez Cruz. The first city founded by Spain in the continental United States was San Agustín (St. Augustine), the capital of Spanish Florida, in 1565. Although it never had a large population, it was a fully functional civilian settlement, with commercial, religious and educational institutions and robust fortifications protecting it from English raids. As it was founded before the Laws of the Indies, it did not follow the structure they dictated.
New Orleans, founded in 1718 by France on the mouth of the Mississippi, is usually seen as the center of French influence in the United States. However, it owes its later importance to the 1762-1803 period of Spanish control. The French structure, arranged on a grid around the Plaza de Armas, was kept by Spain, but was substantially enlarged and completely fortified, and significant engineering works were implemented. The architecture of the famous French Quarter, while not outright Spanish, is the result of Spanish building codes. Spain’s presence was accompanied by intense construction work as an instrument of the colonial policies. The works designed, funded and constructed by Spain during its 15131821 rule—forts, irrigation channels, government buildings, and missions—make it one of the main contributors to the Unites States’ national heritage. Among them we can highlight the missions and presidios, such as Santa Barbara in California, San Xavier del Bac in Arizona and San Jose in Texas, as well as Presidio La Bahia in Texas. Urban architecture remains in St. Augustine, Santa Fe, New Orleans and Monterey. Engineering works were limited in their territorial extent, but in San Antonio and New Orleans they were quite significant. After the political presence of Spain in North America had disappeared, Spanish architects and engineers continued to move to the United States to work. Guastavino, a Valencian who introduced timbrel vaulting to the US and constructed nearly a thousand buildings with his patented system, and Sert, an exile of the Spanish Civil War who went on to lead the Harvard Department of Architecture, are some of the most outstanding cases. Over the last few decades, the most prestigious Spanish offices have also created significant buildings in the United States.
Private engineering companies have also upheld the Spanish tradition, lending their expertise to highly relevant projects. Companies such as Abertis, Dragados, OHL and Ferrovial have undertaken very significant projects in the transport sector, while Iberdrola, Acciona, ACS and Repsol have implemented state-of-the-art renewable energy projects.

Designing America Spain’s Imprint in the U.S.
Designing America: Spain’s Imprint in the U.S. is an exhibit that displays the important contributions that Spain has made to the construction of the United States territory, landscape and cities, starting with the first settlements to present day. Organized by the Fundación Consejo España - Estados Unidos, in partnership with the Biblioteca Nacional de España, the exhibition aims to present a novel and distinct perspective on the Spanish presence in the United States.
Through the dialogue between historic documents and a combined narration of texts, images and audio-visual elements, visitors to the exhibition are enlightened to the historical, political and cultural events that have marked the course of 500 years of common history between the United States and Spain — a footprint that is still visible on North American soil. HUSHED WRITING
¡Cine Magnífico!
Imagine a book with all the classic sections, but without a phonetic or grammatical reading. That is, one that can only be “read” graphically. Grafía Callada (Hushed Writing) is project by Spanish graphic designer Pepe Gimeno originated with the idea of constructing a book in which not a single intelligible word appears.
¡Cine Magnífico! celebrates Spanish and Latin American culture through the presentation of some of the best of modern cinema in a weekend-long program, featuring work by first-time filmmakers and established masters alike. The subject matter runs the gamut from comedies, action films, romances and documentary films, to dramatic masterpieces. Some of the riskiest and most innovative films of recent years will be included.
Gimeno’s initial intention was to achieve a deconstructed view of the book, to be able to separate content and form. The result of the project is a work on the structures of writing and its codes, that will be on display at New York’s Type Directors Club this December.
¡Cine Magnífico! is organized by Instituto Cervantes, the National Hispanic Cultural Center and University of New Mexico’s Latin American & Iberian Institute so as to be at the forefront of the movement to increase cultural opportunities for the entire New Mexico community and to bring Latinos and non-Latinos together to share common experiences through film.

Joaquín Torres-García The Arcadian Modern
The Museum of Modern Art presents a major retrospective devoted to the art of Spanish-Uruguayan artist Joaquín TorresGarcía (1874–1949). The exhibition comprises works ranging from the late 19th century to the 1940s, and includes drawings, paintings, objects, sculptures, and original artist notebooks and rare publications. This retrospective places emphasis on two key moments in the artist’s life: 1923 to 1933, when Torres-García participated in various European early-modern avant-garde movements while establishing his own signature pictographic-constructivists style; and 1935 to 1943, when he produced one of the most striking repertoires of synthetic abstraction upon his return to Uruguay. VALIJA DIPLOMÁTICA LOW COST
I See Words, I Hear Voices
Valija Diplomática Low Cost is an exhibition project, curated by the Spanish writer and curator Nilo Casares, that reinterprets the “decentralized packages distribution network” concept (aka diplomatic bag). The exhibition converts these bags into containers of art, using standard suitcases for traveling in the cabin of a low cost flight company-surely the means of transport used by most of us-as an intervention space. This exhibition of objects is DIY and of modest budget. It features the works of 16 artists from all five continents, in which the suitcase is the element of continuity between every piece.
Since 2009, Dora García has been carrying out the Mad Marginal project, major stages of which were shown at the recent Documenta XII in Kassel and at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, where the artist was featured at the Spanish Pavilion. Her work examines the wellsprings of artistic experience, altering the traditional relationships between artist, work, and viewer, as well as those of the individual, whose daily behavior she questions through performance, film, and discussion.
A new portion of the Mad Marginal saga was inaugurated in Montreal, with the Of Crimes and Dreams exhibition at the Fonderie Darling summer 2014, together with other exhibitions. The conclusion of this portion of the saga will be presented at The Power Plant this fall, guest curated by Chantal Pontbriand.

Goya & Dalí: Los Caprichos
Dalí shows us a complete work of art, consistent with Goya’s thinking, marked by a programmatic and enlightened character that reconciles the multiple sources of knowledge from Baroque tradition, the Classical world and the French Encyclopedists.
Goya’s Los Caprichos was an artistic experiment exposing the foolish superstitions in 18th-century Spanish society. Goya described the series as depicting the innumerable foibles and follies to be found in any civilized society, and from the common prejudices and deceitful practices which custom, ignorance, or self-interest have made usual. In 1973 Salvador Dalí created a metamorphosis of Goya’s suite into a colorful surrealist masterpiece. From the numbered series of 200, each piece is hand signed by Salvador Dalí and is a genuine rarity for the Dalí and Goya admirers. Goya & Dalí: Los Caprichos exhibition

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES Meadows Museum’s 50th Anniversary MARK ROGLÁN Linda P. and William A. Custard Director of the Meadows Museum Centennial Chair at the Meadows School of the Arts meadowsmuseumdallas.org
The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University is truly unique, with a supportive University leadership, a focused collection of Spanish art, a generous and consistent patronage, a fantastic board, and most importantly, a family dedicated to the vision of its founder, Algur H. Meadows. The recent historic gift from The Meadows Foundation, under the leadership of Linda P. Evans, grandniece of our founder, helps exemplify this ongoing support. In fact, Algur Meadows’ vision of creating a “Prado for Texas” vividly carries on, and I hope he would be proud of everything that has been accomplished all these years and the promising future before us. It has been 50 years since the Meadows Museum opened its doors and made its renowned Spanish collection available to the public. Since the death of Algur Meadows in 1978, the museum has followed his vision and continued to grow. The collection has more than doubled in size, and a grand new building was dedicated in 2001. The institution has also focused on making research and scholarship central to its mission, developing major educational initiatives, including lectures, fellowships and inclusive programming. Through active participation in the academic and educational life of SMU and collaboration with faculty across campus, the museum has helped develop fertile initiatives over the years, including classes, workshops and other learning opportunities for our students that have often become career-changing experiences. Moreover, the museum has also organized exhibitions and published insightful catalogues and books to accompany these projects. All of these exciting developments have made the Meadows Museum the center for Spanish art in America. In fact, we are the only museum in the world to have an ongoing partnership with the Prado Museum in Spain, to provide yearly major exhibitions focused on the art of Spain, and to maintain a growing network of fellows and scholars interested in the study of Spain’s art and culture. It is our hope that, sooner or later, anyone interested in Spain and its art will come to experience the Meadows.

This summer, the museum was proud to present the Abelló collection as the only venue in the United States to feature its treasures. As part of the museum’s golden anniversary year exhibition programming, the collection focused on the idea of taste and collecting. Belonging to successful businessman Juan Abelló and his remarkable wife, Anna Gamazo, the collection included works by many of Spain’s greatest talents. The couple shares a passion for modern and contemporary art, which, coincidentally, Algur Meadows also collected with zest, including works by Jackson Pollock, Alberto Giacometti and Franz Kline. The collection assembled by the Abellós throughout their lives is remarkable. With The Abelló Collection: A Modern Taste for European Masters, we presented the majority of the collection’s highlights: a total of 105 paintings, drawings, and one sculpture, all of which testified to the depth and quality of the art in the collection. Closing the year we will have another major private collection from Spain on view in the U.S. for the first time: Treasures from the House of Alba: 500 Years of Art and Collecting. This exhibition will run from September 11 through January 3, 2016, and will feature over 100 objects from this most distinguished noble Spanish family. In contrast to Abelló, the Alba collection is the result of 19 generations of collecting, from the 1400s to the present. Major treasures never before seen outside of Spain, including Fra Angelico’s Madonna of the Pomegranate and Goya’s The Duchess of Alba in White, will be seen, along with incredible archival materials such as Columbus’s first map of the New World; the Alba Bible, the first Bible to be translated directly from Hebrew to Castilian in the 1430s; and a first edition of Cervantes’ famous novel Don Quixote, among many other prized objects. The exhibition will take over most of the second floor of the Meadows Museum and will showcase the history of taste in the family from medieval times to today. I would like to invite everyone reading these lines to experience the Meadows today and come discover this museum, a cultural embassy of Spanish art in the heart of America.

VAIVÉN. Six Visual Journeys between Spain & the US
New York, Just for the Brave
The exhibition is an open dialogue about multicultural identities and heritage, migration, and cultural assimilation though the eyes of six Spanish-American photographers. The dichotomy of belonging to two places and the constant play between the influence of cultural background versus the setting, remains the core of this exhibition. Memories, popular culture, identity, the every day life, nature and urban spaces function as starting points to analyze the motivations and expectations that lie behind each photographic series.
Four visions of a city that demands of its inhabitants an extreme grade of courage. A city that exchanges bravery for liberty. It is a city of pioneers. Pioneers that renew themselves in successive migrations, that change the nature of the city in waves and, at the same time, keep alive its recognizable character. What would New York be without the brave ones that inhabit it? The four participating photographers take part in this collective desire to make a space for themselves in this urban landscape. There is no city in the world that so urgently requires a spirit of conquest.
Curated by writer Elvira Lindo, this exhibition analyzes Manhattan from the lens of four resident Spanish photographers in the Big Apple. The photographers Fernando Sancho, Xavi Menós, Ana Nance and Sion Fullano give us their vision, in which we can also sense their experience.

The Flame Festival
Raquel Andueza y La Galanía
The continuous evolution of jazz music blending with all kinds of world music sounds has also touched upon the traditions and roots of flamenco. The Flame Festival is the only festival in the US which provides a space to showcase this new musical fusion, allowing local audiences to discover and enjoy this ever-growing genre while building strong cultural bridges.
Formed by Raquel Andueza and Jesús Fernández Baena in 2010, La Galanía quickly established itself as one of the most important groups of the Spanish music scene. The ensemble is specialized in Baroque music from the 17th and 18th-century. Their performances are always based on meticulous historical research and are put on in collaboration with the best Spanish and foreign musicians, well-read in this style of repertoire.
Following the success of the monthly music series The Flame: Flamenco Infused Jazz (held at The Cornelia St Café since February 2014), the festival hopes to concentrate the best of the year of concerts into an annual three-day/ three artist festival.

The new and revolutionary way to experience theater at the CCEMiami: you choose how many plays you want to see and how much you want to spend.
The concept is simple and thrilling. There are seven shipping containers with a capacity to seat fifteen audience members, and each container presents a different fifteen minute play. The plays are throughout the night, as each company reproduces their show six times every evening. The genres range from comedy to drama and mystery.
The Moth in Spanish, conducted by The Moth and organized by The Consulate General of Spain in New York (Spain Culture NY) and Instituto Cervantes, is a storytelling project for Spanish-speakers. The project seeks to create a new space and opportunity to empower the concept of community among Spanish speakers in New York, let them learn how to create a narrative and present it in public. Participants gain access to a platform where they can express their own experiences, sharing tales of family and work, immigration and personal transformation. The workshop project culminates in a storytelling performance before an audience at Instituto Cervantes.

Yerma (Barren)
GALA Hispanic Theatre celebrates its ¡Viva los 40! anniversary season with the world premiere of a new adaptation of Yerma, a dramatic tragic poem written in 1934 by the renowned Spanish poet and writer Federico García Lorca. Since its inception in 1976, GALA has promoted Spanish classical and contemporary theater in the United States and engaged in cultural exchanges with artists from Spain.
In this new adaptation by the Spanish playwright Fernando J. López, the cast has been reduced to five characters: Yerma, Juan, Victor, La Vieja Dolores and María. This concentration of characters heightens the oppression of a loveless marriage, forbidden desires and repressive society faced by Yerma in her rural environment and underscores how even today women face the tension between motherhood and their role in society. A playwright who has had numerous productions in Spain, López is also a published novelist and a noted scholar in Europe and the United States. Yerma, courtesy of GALA Hispanic Theatre

AIRE: CONCERT FOR NOMADS
Dreams of the Mediterranean
Art All Night: Nuit Blanche DC is an all-night exploration and celebration of contemporary art, encompassing five of DC’s most vibrant neighborhoods. With this festival Washington DC joins a global network of Nuit Blanche allnight arts events, that started in Paris in 2002 and has captivated audiences from Toronto to Tel Aviv. In this 2015 edition, Spain participates with Aire: Concert for Nomads, a cinematic, musical and poetic proposal that travels through cities, memories and time, exploring the nomadic nature of our lives.
The illustrator, Borja González, works on a lit glass table top, sand-drawing on live music. A camera records and projects the action on a big screen in real time so that we are able to follow the fascinating creative process of each drawing. Borja González’s talent allows him to offer challenging acrobatics and he even manages to end the show very tenderly with the help of a life-size puppet. Presented by Between the Seas North America’s festival of contemporary Mediterranean performance.
The piece is designed as a site-specific multimedia poetic concert, conceived from an original musical suite of composer and double bass player Javier Moreno, and developed as a collaboration into an allegory of images created by filmmaker and video artist Laia Cabrera and projection-designer and animator Isabelle Duverger.
