The artist creates alone within the intimacy of his drawing table, for his eyes only. The images decide otherwise rebelling and escaping the solitary margins, fleeing to the world around and looking for other eyes to behold them. Our cover by cartoonist and illustrator Javier Olivares evokes the power of images that invite our minds to explore and discover. This season, the Spanish Fever best-of anthology brings us testimony of that power through the recent resurgence of the Spanish comic and graphic novel, a fertile ground for creativity and diversity that speak to us in a myriad of ways. Luis BuĂąuel knew very well how images touch our minds and souls, breaking the social structures that confine them. This fall, a selection of the most celebrated movies of the master filmmaker will engage us one more time with his rebellious understanding of the world and the irreverent power of the irrationality of dreams. As the year wraps up, we will continue to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel the Cervantes and the 100th anniversary of that of composer Enrique Granados with a number of events in the U.S. and Canada. Picasso and other great Spanish masters will visit different cities in an array of exhibitions that assert the tradition of excellence of the visual arts from Spain. Our program this season invites you to explore the power of images, sounds, voices, words and flavors: the power of art and culture. We hope you can join us.

In the last fifteen years, Spanish comics have attracted much interest in the field of cultural studies within academia in the United States. Scholars feel a strong fascination for the Spanish cultural production and its complexities. The Civil War, Franco’s dictatorship and all of the historical transformations of the country during the twentieth century have had an impact on Spanish comic production. Democracy in the late 1970s brought freedom with graphic experimentation and a search for new styles that would foster a dialogue between American and European comics. Scholars in the U.S. like to analyze the contrasting production of the different political times of last century. There is a lot of interest in the ways artists express themselves through comics. During the Spanish dictatorship, comic artists working mostly on pieces for children used their creative talents to either resist and confront or comply with and even promote the government’s ideological discourses. There are a lot of aspects of Spanish history that can be revisited through the cultural production of comics. At the same time, new, contemporary Spanish productions are finding a general public of American readers that celebrate and enjoy the cleverness and creativity of the Spanish authors of our present times. The inspiring creativity, diversity and richness of Spanish comic production is starting to be part of academic conferences and publications. In 2003, I edited a symposium of nine articles on Spanish Comics for the International Journal of Comic Art. This academic journal, founded and edited by Temple University Professor John Lent, has a strong international and multidisciplinary scope and has promoted and studied comics all over the world since 1999. That symposium, which includes articles from international scholars such as Viviane Alary, Pedro Pérez del Solar, Anne Magnussen, Jesús Jimenez Varea, Manuel Barrero and Alvaro Pons, helped promote the study of Spanish comics at the university level.

In 2009, the Modern Language Association of America asked me for an article on graphic novels of the Hispanic world as part of a volume of the MLA, Approaches to Teaching Series. Editor Steve Tabachnick, English Professor at the University of Memphis, was fully aware of the evolution and interest in comics and graphic novels as part of the learning process of a culture. He also knew that Hispanic comics, in all of their editorial forms, such as comic strips, comic books and graphic novels, were a rich and complex reality that involved many countries and needed to be included in the project. When focusing on Spain, the most prominent contemporary authors with graphic novels published in English in the U.S. at that moment were Miguelanxo Prado and Max. Both authors are considered pioneers of the Spanish graphic novel. Miguelanxo Prado’s Streak of Chalk was published in Spain in 1993 and won both the 1994 Alph Art Angouleme Award in France and the Best Work Award for the Barcelona Saló del Cómic. The English translation, from 1994, received nominations for the American Eisner and Harvey Awards in 1995. Prado then had his pieces Tangents and Daily Delirium translated into English. In the case of Max, his graphic novel The Extended Dream of Mr. D, which was initially published as a serial, won the 1999 Ignatz Award for Best Serial at the SPX Festival. His other translated pieces are Bardin the Superrealist (Spanish National Award) and Vapor.
Fantagraphics, the most prominent American alternative publishing house, is now bringing to the general public the anthology Spanish Fever: Stories by the New Spanish Cartoonists. Coordinated by Santiago García, an author known in the U.S. for his recently translated book On the Graphic Novel, this anthology showcases the latest generation of Spanish cartoonists. Within Spanish Fever, you can also find historical figures that transformed the Spanish comics landscape of the last quarter of the twentieth century, such as Antonio Altarriba, Kim, Miguel Ángel Martín, Pere Joan, Miguel Gallardo, Javier Olivares, Micharmut, Javier Olivares, Ramón Boldú or Max. Santiago García also combines excellent examples from rising stars such as Paco Roca, Juan Berrio, Alfonso Zapico or Juanjo Sáez, with new voices like David Rubín, Sergi Puyol, Álvaro Ortiz or José Domingo. A total of 30 fantastic voices that show great talent are included. There are just three Spanish female cartoonists in this anthology: Mireia Pérez, Clara-Tanit Arque and Ana Galvañ. All three are fantastic and promising comic artists in what has been a male-centered tradition in the twentieth century, as also happens in the American and European landscapes. Scholars in the U.S., such as Gema Pérez Sánchez of the University of Miami, have researched the Spanish

transition from dictatorship to democracy and the importance of female authors like Ana Juan, Ana Miralles and Asun Balzola. From this group of women, Ana Juan is very well-known in America for her covers of The New Yorker since 1995. On the other hand, Asun Balzola, who was mostly an illustrator and had a very limited production of just two comics for the magazine Madriz, is considered a pioneer of feminism in Spanish comics. Ana Miralles is another historical figure who has done very relevant work in Spain since the 1980s and is still working on comics today. Looking at the twenty-first century, there are other important rising female stars, such as Sonia Pulido, Ana Oncina and Ana Sainz, who can be added to Santiago GarcĂa’s wise selection to form a more complete perspective. Anthologies like Spanish Fever entice American readers, while serving as an excellent tool to scholars, students and teachers who want to learn more about Spanish culture.

Eat Spain up!
CULINARY ARTS NEW YORK & WASHINGTON DC October
A Journey into Spain’s Food and Culture
Eat Spain up! is a three-day cultural festival that brings Spanish food culture closer to New York City and Washington, DC audiences. Eat Spain up! is a cultural initiative to bring Spanish food culture closer to the rest of the world by sharing the cultural essence of its gastronomy: its origins in the soil that shapes Spain’s land, its dependency on the people who inhabit it, and its contribution to society as an instrument of communication. This will be a virtual trip around the country to discover people from Spain and how they live from their food: what traditions they have kept and which they have blown to pieces to give birth to the new Spanish cuisine. The project brings together tastings, cooking workshops, screenings, art exhibitions, and round table discussions in New York City and will feature a cooking demonstration by Spanish chef Firo Vázquez in Washington, DC as part of the Delegation of the European Union’s monthly series Conversations in Culture . STATES OF MIND
PICASSO THE LINE
Picasso Lithographs 1945-1960 The Norton Simon Museum presents States of Mind: Picasso Lithographs 1945–1960, a revelatory exhibition exploring Pablo Picasso’s prolific work in the medium of lithography. Drawing from the Norton Simon Museum’s holdings of more than 700 Picasso prints—among the deepest collections of its kind anywhere in the world—States of Mind traces the evolution of the artist’s individual compositions from the 1940s and 1950s through multiple states, subtle adjustments and radical revisions. The 86 prints on view, many presented for the first time in 40 years, give viewers a rare chance to encounter this groundbreaking body of work by one of history’s most celebrated artists.
Featuring 70 of Pablo Picasso’s line drawings, Picasso The Line investigates the artist’s attempts to portray three-dimensional forms on a two-dimensional sheet of paper, thus relinquishing perspective. The exhibition features works from both public and private collections, some of which have never before been seen in the U.S. or are otherwise seldom released from the Menil Collection’s holdings. The works span a wide range of mediums, from pen or pencil to charcoal and collage. A fully-illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition, which is curated by Carmen Giménez, guest curator and founding director of the Museo Picasso Málaga, and managed by Clare Elliott, associate curator at the Menil.

THE BEAUTIFUL BRAIN
SPLENDOR, MYTH AND VISION: NUDES FROM THE PRADO
Santiago Ramón y Cajal, considered the father of modern neuroscience, was also an exceptional artist. Cajal devoted his life to the study of the microanatomy of the brain, the body’s most complex and mysterious organ. His theory that the brain is composed of individual cells rather than a tangled single web is the basis of neuroscience today. He drew the brain in a way that provided a clarity exceeding that achieved by photographs. He combined scientific and artistic skills to produce drawings with extraordinary scientific and aesthetic qualities. The drawings that Cajal made are not only landmarks of science but also of the art of drawing and the exploration of human nature.
The Clark is the exclusive venue for Splendor, Myth, and Vision: Nudes from the Prado, featuring 28 Old Master paintings from the Museo Nacional del Prado that celebrate the role of the nude in Western painting. 24 of the paintings have never before been shown in America. The works presented in the exhibition are among the finest of the Prado’s unparalleled holdings, selected not only for their relationship to the exhibition’s themes, but also for their beauty and historical significance. Included in this sensuous exhibition are major paintings by Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacopo Tintoretto, Diego Velázquez, Jan Brueghel, Guercino, Nicholas Poussin, Luca Giordano, Guido Reni, Jusepe de Ribera and others.

He was awarded the Enor Great Award of Architecture 2011. His work has followed a research line concerning landscapes undergoing transformation and architectural operations on heritage buildings. He recently finished ‘An Encounter,’ a short film produced in conjunction with cinema director Juan Bollaín that describes his experience as a squatter in the sugar factory, now his studio, and his experiments there since 1986, which have influenced his way of understanding the relationship between architecture and heritage, and at the same time, emerged as a rescue mission for this abandoned industrial precinct.

LUIS BUÑUEL 1900 - 1983
GUILLERMO RODRÍGUEZROMAGUERA Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Guillermo Rodríguez-Romaguera published his first short story when he was 12 years old. He is a Princeton University graduate with a master’s degree in film production from the University of Southern California. At USC, he received the Harold Lloyd Foundation Scholarship and won the Caucus Foundation Student Filmmaker Award for his 35mm thesis Playing. He is pursuing a PhD in Comparative Media and Culture where his practical knowledge of the field and his passion for storytelling serve as tools to dissect fiction both in written and visual form. Death in the Garden
Spanning six decades, Luis Buñuel’s film career can perhaps be traced back to his rejection of Catholicism at age 16 when he told his mother he’d been expelled from a Jesuit private institution and opted instead to finish his studies at the local public school in Zaragoza. That realization about the Church’s hypocrisy in a way determined the course of his artistic life – a series of transcultural endeavors that would take him from his native Spain, where he was part of “La generación del 27”, to France where he joined the Surrealist movement, across the Atlantic to failed attempts at a career in Hollywood and where he briefly worked for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, then south of the border to Mexico, where he found a filmmaking niche, and finally to international success with films marred in controversy but subsequently lauded with acclaim. From the emblematic surrealist short Un chien andalou (An Andalusian Dog 1929) to the Academy Award winning Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie 1972), Buñuel experimented in every genre
25 Ensayo de un crimen Los Olvidados Tristana
imaginable, from documentary to the musical, but all his films bore his distinct style and themes. They are all unmistakably Buñuelian – a combination of a rebellious assault on religious and aristocratic institutions, a rejection of intellectual reason, and an embrace of the irrationality of dreams as a way to combat the imprisonment of structures both moral and social. While attending the University of Madrid, he developed close friendships with poet Federico García Lorca and painter Salvador Dalí, with whom he later collaborated in creating the iconic Un chien andalou, a Freudian provocation meant to incite and shock the intellectual bourgeoisie of his youth, and the controversial surrealist opus L’Age d’Or (The Golden Age 1930). His relationship with Dalí deteriorated over differing political views as the film went into production. While Buñuel was keen on undermining the morals of high society, Dalí sought to scandalize the Catholic Church for attention but ultimately wanted to be a part of the same aristocracy Buñuel despised. In 1933, he directed a documentary entitled Las Hurdes: Tierra Sin Pan (Land Without Bread) in which he overlaid a disaffected travelogue narration over scenes of extreme poverty in rural Spain. Both the Republican government and subsequent Nationalist dictatorship under Franco banned the film. While working for the Republican government during the Spanish Civil War as the coordinator of its propaganda films, he visited the United States with his family and opted to stay there once Franco seized power. Nonetheless, his attempts at a career in Hollywood were futile so he moved to New York where he briefly worked at MoMA until his infamous reputation as the director of L’Age d’Or cost him the job. He eventually settled in Mexico, where he first directed the critically panned and financial failure Gran Casino (1947), a musical starring Argentine star Libertad Lamarque and Mexican singer Fernando Negrete, but then found commercial success with the comedy El Gran Calavera (The Great Madcap) in 1949. Renouncing his Spanish citizenship that same year, Buñuel became naturalized as a Mexican citizen and remained as such for the rest of his life. His career flourished as he directed mostly commercial films that managed to still explore his lifelong themes of sexual pathology, the absurdity of religion and how women disrupt the inherent patriarchy of Hispanic culture in Mexico’s specific national setting. During this period, the initially rebuked Los Olvidados (The Young and the Damned 1950) which went on to win him Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival and the locally maligned Él (1953) were later reinterpreted as masterpieces, one for its uncompromising portrayal of impoverished youth in rural Mexico and the other for its irreverent linking of primal obsessions, bourgeois violence and religious hypocrisy. Even at its most conventional, Buñuel’s Mexican oeuvre always had room for sequences of dreamlike surreality that disrupt the film’s otherwise realist narratives, such as Archibaldo’s murderous fantasies in
26
Ensayo de un Crimen (The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz 1955) and Pedro’s slow-motion dream in Los Olvidados.
Lured by the New Spanish Cinema movement that emerged during the ‘apertura’ period of the Franco regime, Buñuel returned to Spain to film Viridiana in 1960 under the initial approval of the government who green-lit the production with minimal script changes. The Vatican went on to condemn the film as blasphemous while Franco’s regime attempted to suppress its release once they realized Buñuel had smuggled a different cut of the film out of the country for its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Despite their efforts, Viridiana won the Palme D’ Or and cemented Buñuel as an international auteur. The 1960s became the apex of Buñuel’s career, a period in which he directed his most acclaimed Mexican and French masterpieces, including El ángel exterminador (The Exterminating Angel 1962), Le journal d’une femme de chambre (Diary of a Chambermaid 1964), Simón del desierto (Simon of the Desert 1965) and the most successful film of his career Belle de Jour (1967), where Catherine Deneuve famously played a housewife who leads a double life as a prostitute while her husband is at work. In 1970, he returned to Spain once again to direct Tristana, another Benito Pérez Galdós adaptation, this time forced to adhere to the censors’ demands in order to avoid a repeat of the Viridiana scandal ten years earlier. He won the 1972 Oscar for Foreign Language Film for Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie, a French film about a group of rich friends who can’t seem to be able to get together for dinner – the antithesis of the dilemma facing the Mexican dinner guests in El ángel exterminador who can’t seem to leave a dinner party after finishing their meal. His last film, Cet obscur objet du désir (That Obscure Object of Desire 1977), is known for featuring two different actresses playing the same role in alternating scenes. Buñuel passed away in 1983 after writing his autobiography aptly titled My Last Sigh. Frugal in production, as he was known for shooting his films quickly, in order, and in strict adherence to the script, Buñuel’s cinema is an attempt to project unto the screen the unfiltered thoughts of a mind liberated from the confines of rational thinking. A fervent atheist, a surrealist beyond surrealism and a social revolutionary, he produced images that battled against institutions that he believed conspired to imprison the poetry of primal urges, sexual and basic, which he unleashed upon any group who sought to suppress them.

Crusoe
Born in Spain, filmmaker Luis Buñuel’s (1900–1983) life and career read like an absurdist epic: a pioneer of experimental surrealist cinema in France at the close of the silent era, then a political exile from 1930s Europe who took refuge in the U.S. (and worked in the MoMA film department) during the war years, next a busy talent during Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema in the 1940s and 1950s and, finally, a celebrated auteur during the peak years of European art house cinema in the 1960s. Objects of Desire: The Films of Luis Buñuel is presented by AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center; American University School of Communication and College of Arts and Sciences; the Cultural Services of the French Embassy; the Mexican Cultural Institute; the National Gallery of Art and SPAIN arts & culture.

LAS MIGAS
THE FLAME FESTIVAL
The four women of Las Migas come from four different cities spanning not only the geography of Spain, but also its cultural diversity–Barcelona, Sevilla, Cordoba and Lerida. They all came to the group with one common passion: Flamenco. Latin rhythms gave the music a happier, more upbeat sound. And a sensitive side began to emerge with beautiful ballads as the dance became more interpretive and free-flowing. The new Las Migas style was established, and has since thrived.
This year’s edition of The Flame Festival features the work of Rebeca Vallejo and Chano Dominguez. The continuous evolution of Jazz music through blending with all kinds of world music sounds has touched upon the traditions and roots of Flamenco music. Although there are several venues and outlets which show the most traditional forms of Flamenco, The Flame Festival is the only platform in the U.S. to allow this new hybrid of musical fusion to blossom, permitting local audiences to discover and enjoy this ever-growing genre while building strong cultural bridges.

TRIBUTE TO CERVANTES AND GRANADOS
PABLO AMORÓS
The Spanish Duo Belcorde - Manuel Briega, violin, and Adrián Fernández, guitar - pays its particular tribute to Cervantes and Granados. The concert program consists of a selection of works and masterpieces composed between the 17th and 20th centuries. In recognition of Miguel de Cervantes, the duo performs “Cervantes Suite” from composer Gaspar Sanz. The rest of the works of the concert come from what is known as Spanish musical nationalism. The Duo Belcorde pays tribute to Enrique Granados with two of his Spanish dances: Oriental and Andalusian.
On the occasion of the 100th and 70th anniversaries of the deaths of Granados and Falla, Spanish pianist Pablo Amorós comes up with a recital that includes masterworks of these two great Spanish composers, pointing out their similarities and differences: the subtle romantic touch of Granados versus the more picturesque nationalism of Falla. There are times when these two composers’ titles and intentions coincide, although the results are conditioned by their personalities. These two universes turn out to be tremendously interesting because they allow us to discern what each brings and what their lines of approach and distance are. Amorós’s interpretive approach to each work and composer allows us to enjoy the artistic versatility and conceptual depth of an undoubtedly virtuoso performer.

The King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at NYU welcomes La Phármaco Dance Company to take part in the program “Proximidades, Límites, Distancias” this September. After the performance and throughout the day on September 28th, La Phármaco will participate in a discussion with other Latin American stage artists, addressing from a broad perspective contemporary stage practices.
Yo Carmen
Accompanied by eight dancers and seven musicians performing live, María Pages stands out once again as an iconic figure of Flamenco. From the tale of the sultry gypsy with a fateful destiny emerges a multifaceted, sincere and forceful woman. In ten scenes sculpted by lighting, she sketches a portrait of the eternal female free of prejudice and conventions, endowed with the voice of all women. Songs are sung by two women, words are chanted by all in unison and poems by female writers are recited in different languages.
