Manuel Estrada Manuel Estrada was born in 1953. He started studying architecture while working at Román Marlasca’s architect studio. At the beginning of the 80’s, he and five colleagues joined forces to form the Sidecar Graphics Group. For several years he worked as a graphic designer in advertising, working for Spain’s most important agencies. In 1989 he opened his own studio, throwing himself wholeheartedly into graphic design. His activity spread into all graphic design related activities. During the 90’s the studio grew to a team of ten people working on corporate identity programs, book collections and editorial projects, as well as visual identity for museums, graphics for events and signage, and archigraphic projects. Some of his recent work include collaborations with institutions such as Premio Cervantes, Alianza Editorial, Fundación Repsol, and El País. Estrada is founder and chairman of Fundación Diseño Madrid, di_mad, which manages Central de Diseño at Matadero Madrid. He is also CEO of the Bienal Iberoamericana de Diseño, and member of APIM, (Professional Association of Madrid Illustrators). He was recently awarded Spain’s National Design Award 2017. Other recognitions include the Laus and AEPD awards, and the ‘Good Design Award 2014’ by the Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in Chicago.

The taste of cuisine is certainly meant to be enjoyed, but its beauty cannot be overlooked. The old adage that we eat with our eyes appears to be true as is the rich connection between the traditional arts and the culinary arts, which is the message Manuel Estrada’s design cover tries to convey. This season, Spain Arts & Culture’s Eat Spain Up! Exhibition presents enduring Spanish gastronomy traditions alongside modern innovations through workshops, tastings, and discussions on some the most relevant themes today in the field of the culinary arts. We then travel to the depths of the sea to undercover hidden treasures and a history once thought to be lost forever. The exhibition Shipwrecked! Preserving Our Underwater Heritage, explores Spain’s maritime history in the Americas, through an unusual lens while stressing the importance of the archeological protection of our submerged heritage. Picasso, Dali, and other influential Spanish artists will be on display this season in cities across the country, showcasing the beauty of Spain’s visual arts. Multiple international film festivals will feature Spanish filmmakers. Films Across Borders will examine the powerful journeys that people around the world embark upon to find happiness, while Recent Spanish Cinema seeks to present the new batch of Spanish films to American audiences. Mujeres de Cine is an initiative that aims to promote Spanish women filmmakers, highlighting their role in the film industry. Finally, More than Shorts allows short films from different regions of Spain to be enjoyed throughout the United States, showcasing some of the best in Spanish contemporary film. Jazz musician Pablo Caminero will be touring the United States this year. He combines jazz and flamenco, using both a double bass and flamenco patterns to create an internationally renowned sound. Through improvisation and the flamenco language, his contemporary jazz music allows the audience to experience both genres simultaneously. Finally, Spanish architects continue to showcase their work on the world stage during the 2017-2018 Chicago Architecture Biennial. The title of this year’s Biennial is “Make New History”, as it encourages architects to explore architecture as an art. This Fall | Winter season of SPAIN Arts & Culture will be filled with a variety of events and exciting cultural experiences all across the country. We hope you will join us!

From the rivers to the seas, from the plains of the “dehesa” to the apple orchards of the north, you can see, smell, and taste the amazing history of Spain. The beautiful 2,000-year old olive trees that produce unbelievable olive oil to this day. The incredible almadraba fishing system from ancient Phoenicia that is still used to catch the most delicious tuna ever. The caves of Asturias under the Picos de Europa where Cabrales cheese gets its unique pungency. To me, these are examples of the incredible richness of Spain’s gastronomy. Generations and generations have worked to create the best produce, meat, and seafood anywhere, and cooks from all around the country have created classic dishes using all of these amazing ingredients. But of course not all the people of Spain were born there! It is a country with a long story of immigration. Actually, to me, Spain, not America, is the original melting pot. In all of history, people from around the region and the world – Greeks and Romans, Moorish Muslims, Jews, and more, have traded with Spain and have settled there, bringing their own histories, traditions, and culture. Spices from everywhere were introduced to Spanish kitchens – saffron obviously came from the Middle East but today we cannot make the iconic Paella Valenciana without it.

Iberian ham @ Eat Spain Up!
And the New World has completely changed Spanish cuisine and the ingredients we Spanish cooks use. Some of the most important ingredients and dishes in Spain are immigrants from the New World. The potatoes that make up a Tortilla Española, the tomatoes in gazpacho, and even the most recognizable Spanish spice, pimenton, all immigrated from the Americas. The Padrón pepper, so iconic to Spanish people that it has a festival in Herbón every year, arrived by sea from South America to a local monastery in the 16th century.
Paella @ Jaleo
It is in this amazing melting pot that many of the most innovative and brilliant chefs have been born. Spanish chefs for the last 20 years have been leaders of culinary creativity, always following their imaginations. I know that Spain is a traditional place, and many of my favorite dishes have been made the same way for generations, but it is also the home of some of the most rule-breaking chefs in the world. It is this contrast, looking back and looking forward, that makes Spanish gastronomy so special. I am lucky enough to have a unique point of view. Like a Padrón pepper in reverse, I am an immigrant from Spain, and settled down in the New World, in Washington, DC. This means I am watching the explosion of Spanish gastronomy from both sides of the ocean. But I am also able to see up close the effect of Spanish gastronomy on America. When I landed in New York City 25 years ago, the average American didn’t even know what tapas were! But now there are Spanish restaurants in every city, and more and more chefs are experimenting with techniques from Spain. This rise in Spanish creativity has immigrated as well … and America is starting to catch on.
Gazpacho @ Jaleo

A few years ago, I discovered a very old American cookbook, “The Virginia Housewife” by Mary Randolph, first published in 1824. In addition to okra soup, roast turkey, and chowder, there it was, “Gaspacho – Spanish”, a recipe for the classic cold Andalusian soup, as prepared by a 19th century American cookbook author. The recipe is different from my Andalusian wife’s recipe, but it is recognizable – tomatoes, cucumbers, old bread. In that moment I realized that America has been learning from Spain for generations, that this culinary exchange goes back many many years… Spanish gastronomy is deep in American history, and we are just tapping into a long tradition that travels back and forth across the sea.
Through my time cooking in the US, I can see that tapas have been a sort of Trojan Horse in America, they have been responsible for bringing Spanish cooking to more and more Americans. When we first opened Jaleo – my Spanish restaurant in Washington – almost 25 years ago, no one was familiar with sharing plates … everyone wanted to have their own meal. But over the years, tapas have come into the mainstream – people are more willing to push their plates to the center of the table and share. To me they are at the same time a simple way of eating and an entire way of life … they are a commitment to being together, sharing dishes, sharing an experience. And this could be my patriotism talking, but maybe this means America is learning from Spain, developing a new openness to the tapas way of life.
Americans are increasingly interested in food, in cooking, in exploring the cuisines of the world, in having new experiences. It may be too much to hope, but maybe the rise of this spirit of tapas, the informality and togetherness of it, can bring us all together … I truly believe that sharing is what makes humanity amazing. I often think of one of my favorite lines from the great food philosopher, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, who said, “The future of nations will depend on how they feed themselves.” Now is the perfect time for Spain, with all of its rich culinary history, to be able to share some of its gastronomic soul, one bowl of gazpacho at a time, with America … from one melting pot to another.

DESIGNERS WITH CHARACTER
MEETING BOWLS
“Designers with Character” (Diseñadores con mucha letra) explores the tremendous vitality of the multiple forms of expression and representation that language takes in “physical/active” writing, thus exposing the creativity and talent of a broad representation of graphic designers: Alex Trochut, Andreu Balius, Atlas, Marta Cerdà Alimbau, Mucho, Serial Cut and Vasava.
The Meeting Bowls are social places for gathering, semi-spherical capsules installed outdoors. They are meeting points that make people slow down in a fast-paced city.
This Public Art Project, created by Spanish artist collective mmmm..., was originally installed in Times Square, New York, in the summer of 2011. For this second edition, presented by Arlington Arts with a grant by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), the Meeting Bowls will be installed in Arlington, VA, and will travel to Miami, FL, during the international art fair Art Basel Miami, in collaboration with CCEMiami.

A collection of seven large-scale sculptures entitled “RhytmTime-Silence” can be found and enjoyed in the parks surrounding The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) is one of the major sculptors of the post-war international art movement. Chillida’s monumental public works can be found throughout Spain, Europe and the Americas. His investigations of mass and form, structural organization, and spatial relationships are rooted in his early training as an architect. While his roughly hewn stone sculptures pay homage to ancient sculptural traditions, his welded corten steel sculptures, with their dark, rusty patinas, embrace the possibilities of modern construction materials.

Zurbarán: Jacob and His Twelve Sons Paintings from Auckland Castle
The biblical text of Genesis 49, in which Jacob, patriarch of the Israelites, gathers his twelve sons and delivers a prophetic blessing for each, inspired Spanish Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664) to create a series of thirteen canvases, with all but one remaining in the collection of a single owner at Auckland Castle, County Durham (UK) since 1756. This exhibition marks the first time these holdings will be presented in America, and only the second time in history that they’ve left Auckland Castle, a unique opportunity to admire the most significant public collection of the artist’s work outside of Spain. Following its exhibition at the Meadows Museum, the show will be on view at The Frick Collection in New York.

EXHIBITION BY BEATRIZ RUIBAL
The exhibition “Through the Eyes of Picasso” will explore Pablo Picasso’s fascination with African and Oceanic art, uniting his paintings and sculptures with art that had a seminal impact on his own creative exploration. Many works in the exhibition will be on view in America for the first time. The exhibition will feature 170 works of art, including more than 60 paintings, sculptures, and ceramics by Picasso, and the works of art – African, Oceanic, and American – that transformed his artistic vision.
Ruibal’s most personal work explores a preoccupation with the representation of absence through spaces, settings and objects. Her images speak of nostalgia and loss, but also survival. Beatriz Ruibal is currently an artist-inresidence at the Real Academia de España in Rome.

Explore the Friendship between the Father of Conceptual Art and the Master of Surrealism
The Dalí Museum will present a special exhibition inviting visitors to examine the relationship between Marcel Duchamp and Salvador Dalí, and its influence on their work. On the surface, these artists could hardly be more dissimilar, but Dalí and Duchamp maintained a lasting bond of friendship and mutual admiration. The two men were united by a combination of humor and skepticism, which led both, in different ways, to challenge conventional views of art and life. This original exhibition brings together around 60 works, but it will also showcase less familiar pieces.

MURILLO: THE SELF-PORTRAITS
MAIDER LÓPEZ AT PROSPECT 4
New York’s Frick Collection and London’s National Gallery will present a show marking the 400th birth anniversary of Spanish Golden Age painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The two self-portraits on display are the only known images of the painter by his own hand, and have not been seen together since at least the early nineteenth century. The exhibition will also feature a group of fifteen other works on loan from international private and public collections. These will include paintings of other sitters by Murillo, as well as later reproductions of the two paintings that reflect their fame in Europe.
Prospect. 4 overlaps with the three-hundredth anniversary celebration of the founding of New Orleans by the French in 1718, and takes the city’s distinctive character as a point of departure to investigate global concerns. It will emphasize artists who engage with the American South, the Global South, and the European countries that colonized these regions, such as Spanish artist Maider López. López’s work focuses on interrupting norms in space and architecture, inviting the audience to experience common spaces in novel and potentially rewarding ways.

OUR HISTORY UNDER THE SEA CARLOS LEÓN Archaeologist and curator of “The Last Voyage of the Frigate Mercedes: A Cultural Treasure Recovered” and “Shipwrecked! Preserving our Underwater Heritage”
A part of our history is under the sea, buried in the form of wood, nails, ceramic work, coins, and cannons. It is the story of the ships that failed and did not reach their destinations. The study and investigation of these archaeological sites reveal unique information about commerce, navigation, routes, products, as well as the ships and the men that travelled through oceans that until then were unknown. The exploration of a shipwreck involves documenting the context in which it occurred, collecting samples, and drawing and photographing all of the objects beneath the water, in order to extract, conserve, and interpret them. It is a process that takes years of work, the results of which are shared with the public in the form of exhibitions and publications. However, there exists a “treasure hunt” that for decades has plundered shipwrecks in waters around every continent. Its only purpose has been to seize commercially valuable objects and sell them to collectors around the world. The case of the Spanish frigate Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes, which sank in 1804 in international waters, and whose cargo of coins was plundered in 2007 by the company Odyssey Marine Exploration, set an international precedent for underwater heritage sites. United States judge Mark A. Pizzo determined on June 3, 2009 that “mutual respect between nations requires that the place where the shipwreck of Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes was found, with all of the people who perished on that fateful date, remain unchanged. International law recognizes the solemnity of the place where they lie and the sovereign interests of Spain in preserving them.” On December 22, 2009, the Federal Tribunal of the United StatesTalkinto HTampa confirmed er the rights of Spain regarding the frigate and all of the material objects that were illegally taken from this place by the Odyssey company. Photos: Monterey Shipwreck @ Courtesy of NOAA
25
The UNESCO Convention on Subaquatic Cultural Heritage 2001 also reiterated the prohibition of any commercial exploitation of underwater archaeological sites and promoted collaboration between involved states, quite like the current collaboration between Spain and the United States of America through the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Spain’s Secretary of Culture. More than one hundred historic Spanish shipwrecks from the 16th to the 19th centuries have been documented in the waters around old Florida. The creation of maritime routes explains (along with the frequent hurricanes and tropical storms) the great quantity of Spanish shipwrecks concentrated in this area of the United States.
The first European to set foot on North American territory was Juan Ponce de León, in 1513. He noted the existence of a strong current, which flows from the south to the north through the Canal of the Bahamas, making it possible to significantly shorten the return trip of ships going to Spain. This became a fundamental route for the Spanish economy, but also a deadly trap for navigators, constantly beset by tropical storms. The first known Spanish shipwrecks near Florida were commanded by Pánfilo de Narváez, who died in the sea along with part of his crew near the Mississippi Delta, towards the end of October, 1528. On April 29, 1554, Bartolomé Carreño’s galleons the San Esteban, Espíritu Santo, and Santa Maria de Yciar, bound for Veracruz, sank in the midst of a storm near Padre Island, Texas. The next year the San Andrés, part of Cosme Rodríguez’s fleet, sank as it returned to Spain from the Panamanian gateway Nombre de Dios. On June 11, 1559, the expedition of Tristán de Luna left Veracruz with 13 ships and 1,500 men, anchoring in the Pensacola bay. A terrible hurricane destroyed seven of their ships on the night of September 19th of that year. In 1561, the Viceroy of New Spain sent Ángel Villafañe to be Governor of the provinces of Florida and Santa Elena. He left a garrison in Pensacola and departed for the coast of Georgia where a hurricane destroyed several of his ships.

In 1563, the son of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who Felipe II sent to secure the zone ahead of the Huguenots, lost various cargo ships laden with a great treasure on his way from Veracruz to Cádiz. One year later, the Santa Clara, sent by Juan Díaz Bocino and on its way from Cartagena of the Indies, shipwrecked.
26
During the following years, various galleons were lost, such as the San Ignacio and the Santa Maria de la Limpia Concepcion (both from the fleet of Juan de Canavás), off of Cape Canaveral. The most important losses were three ships from the fleet of Juan Tello de Guzman, in 1586, and Alvaro Flores de Quiñones’ ships the Santa Catalina, Jesus Maria, and Espiritu Santo, which sank on September 9, 1589. Both fleets were hit by hurricanes while sailing from Havana to Spain through the Bahamas Canal.
In 1618, the galleon San Martín (“The Admiral of Honduras”), sent by Tomás Raspuru, sank as it sailed between the Bahamas and the coasts of Florida. Four years later, another storm in the Florida Keys sank part of the Tierra Firme Fleet sent by Marqués de Caldereyta, including the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, Santa Margarita, and an accompanying supply ship. In 1630, two galleons from the Tierra Firme fleet, sent by Antonio de Oteiza and travelling from Havana to Saint Augustine, sank again in the Florida Keys. On the 15th of February 1665, another Spanish galleon, the Santa Ana María, also perished there.
The 18th century brought more tragic shipwrecks. The most terrible, in terms of number of ships affected, was the wreck of the fleet of Juan de Ubilla in 1715. Twelve ships, including the San Miguel, Ciervo, Santísima Trinidad, Nuestra Señora de la Regla, Santo Cristo de San Roman, Nuestra Señora del Carmen y San Antonio, Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Nuestra Señora de la Popa, Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, and Urca de Lima, sank during a strong storm south of Cape Canaveral.

FILM WASHINGTON DC March — April
Between 1719 and 1731 another seven Spanish ships were lost at sea, six in the Pensacola Bay and one, the Córdoba, between Florida and the Bahamas. A few years later, on the 15th of July 1733, the Nueva España fleet sent by Rodrigo de Torres, sank in the Florida Keys: The Nuestra Señora del Pópulo, Infante, San José y Las Ánimas, San Pedro, Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, Gallo Indiano, San Francisco, Tres Puentes, San Felipe, Rubí Segundo, San Fernando, San Ignacio, as well as the ships of both Juan José Arizón and Antonio de Chaves. During the 18th century hostilities between Spain, France, and England, the San Cayetano (1738), the Andalucia (1740), the Santa Susana (1747), the Notre Dame of the Deliverance (1755), the Nuevo Constante, the Corazon de Jesus (1766), the Nuestra Señora del Rosario (1783), and the El Cazador (1784) were all shipwrecked. Finally, during the first years of the 19th century, until the independence of Florida from Spanish rule in 1821, five Spanish ships sank: the Hermógenes (1807), the Araucana (1811), the Postillón (1814), the Segundo Volador (1814), the Empecinada (1815), the Ligero (1820), and the Almirante (1821). A few years later the Mágica (1824), Habanera (1826), and Vencedora (1846) sank. With the goal of promoting and preserving this important history, SPAIN arts & culture joins NOAA this season in presenting Shipwrecked! Preserving Our Underwater Heritage, an exhibit on the maritime legacy of Spain in United States. The exhibit will be curated by Spanish collective Wot Studio and archaeologist Carlos León.

The Silver Way
China, Spanish America and the Birth of Globalization, 1565–1815
Centuries before London and New York rose to international prominence, a trading route was established between Spanish America and China that ushered in a new era of globalization. The “Ruta de la Plata” or “Silver Way” began with Andres de Urdaneta’s discovery in 1565 of the “tornaviaje”, or “return route”, between the Philippines and Acapulco. It soon catalyzed economic and cultural exchange, integrated world financial markets, engendered the first global currency in the Spanish milled dollar, led to the rise of the first “world city” in Mexico and established Manila as the primary Asian entrepot. In collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute and the Embassy of Philippines, SPAIN arts & culture will host a presentation by Peter Gordon, co-author of the book “The Silver Way”, Margaret Myers, Director of the China and Latin America Program at the Inter-American Dialogue, and Tatiana Seijas, Associate Professor at the Pennsylvania State University. This program seeks to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences between creators from Spain and the United States through artist residencies. These residencies address the general theme of heritage and conservation, focusing on the interrelationships between art and culture, the use (and re-uses) of the heritage sites, new opportunities and public participation in the actual context of the city and our society. The residencies will take place at the Cultural Center of Tabacalera in Malaga and the Presidio of San Francisco, a national park site in California. An artist from each country will do a month-long residency at one of the sites supported by a local curator. Both cities and residencies will be connected through Portals, an ongoing global art project created by Shared Studios. Portals are repurposed shipping containers that serve as a concept, a program, and a physical structure. They use technology to help connect people across the world, as well as support interactive art experiences. From left to right: Presidio Real of San Francisco Tabacalera, Málaga

The Mystery of Gascons’ Christ Medieval Theater
CCEMiami presents the play “The Mistery of Gascons’ Christ” by the theatre company Nao d’amores, a company dedicated to the research and staging of renaissance and medieval theatre from a contemporary point of view.
The dramaturgy is a recreation of the liturgical ceremony performed at San Justo’s church in Segovia, Spain, made possible after the study of historical texts and research of musical pieces that could have been part of that ritual. As a result, the play combines actors’ work with puppets theatre and live music to make an approach to the origin of modern theatre. The primitive Theater of Nao d’amores artistic team is highly recognized and has collaborated with the Spanish Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico in several shows as: Viaje del Parnaso (2005) by Miguel de Cervantes, directed by Eduardo Vasco and Tragicomedia de Don Duardos (2006) by Gil Vicente, directed by Ana Zamora.
Founded in 2001 by Ana Zamora, Nao d´amores Teatro aims to recover medieval and renaissance theater plays and techniques, working with a group of people coming from classical theater, puppet theater and early music. WHEN
