COVER BY MARTA CERDÀ Marta Cerdà (Barcelona, 1980) got involved in design after a sudden turn in her initial plans. She was going to be a psychiatrist, but midway through her studies she realized her true vocation was somewhere else. Hence she decided to study graphic design at Elisava. In 2004 she joined the Toormix studio, where she spent two years working until she joined Vasava. When she won the ADC Young Guns in 2008, she chose to start her own studio. From there on she has worked in several artistic, cultural and advertising projects which combined art direction, custom typography, illustration and graphic design. She has worked for well-known companies like Ray Ban, Coca Cola, Kleenex and Corona, music groups like Dave Matthews Band or MF Doom, several magazines and publishing houses (Penguin Books, Chicken House, The Guardian, Businessweek Magazine, Wired) and some of the most important advertising agencies (Mother London, AMV BBDO, Shackleton, SCPF, Grey, Leo Burnett, Villarrosas and Ogilvy). For the SPAIN arts & culture Spring/Summer catalog, Marta wanted to show the creative instant in which an idea bursts into light. As a result, she presents a work with a surrealist flavor that speaks about creativity and develops a dialogue between man and nature, rationality and emotion, functionality and absurdity. There is an unforgettable scene in the classic surrealist film by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, ‘Un chien andalou’, when a razor blade suddenly slits an eye that is wide open. Eight years later, this cinematographic moment still remains as striking as the first day it was shown on film. This is just an example, but a revealing one. For centuries, Spanish artists of all disciplines have excelled in creating precisely this kind of unique and iconic images.

It comes as no surprise that young emerging artists would use new technologies to display their bold visual imagination. SPAIN arts & culture is particularly proud of presenting ‘We Made This’, a brand new book that was conceived and curated specifically for the U.S. market, featuring the dazzling work of a whole new generation of Spanish postdigital creators. Moving freely between all sorts of media- ranging from the most traditional to the most contemporary, and from commercial work to personal art projects- these artists represent Spanish creativity at its best. This same visual power extends to most of our Spring-Summer 2012 program that includes among many others, our ongoing collaboration with the Berklee College of Music, the ‘Flamenco Soul’ project (on tour in the U.S. very soon), as well as a series of fascinating exhibits displaying paintings by Spanish masters such as Picasso, Miró, El Greco, and Goya. Many great concerts, films and lectures make up this comprehensive 2012 Spring/Summer program. Spanish POST-DIGITAL CREATION CULTURE THIS IS OUR MOMENTO BY Héctor ayuso OFFF Festival Director These are rough times to live in. Good news are scarce, economists spill theories and omens in the TV and bankers squander, as now, more than ever, the word ‘regulation’ is thrown around as a formula to avoid the panic that is usually associated with that other dreadful word ‘crisis’.

However, these are also privileged times to live in. Yes. Not only back in the year 2000, when Spain was filled with excitement as online and offline design-oriented enterprises were blooming in every corner of the country; not only then but also now, more than a decade later, when the general feel is that things have to slow down and common sense dictates that every step should be carefully planned and every action carefully reasoned.

Good times are not only made up of good years. Though it may not look like it at first glance, something needs to go

wrong first in order for any real adventure to begin. What else would explain why a phrase like ‘you never want a serious crisis to go to waste’ strikes a chord in anyone who’s ever lived long enough? Words uttered by President Obama’s chief of staff mimicking the older ‘a mind is a terrible thing to waste’ (credited to Forest Long from Young & Rubicam). A couple of quotes that sum up marvelously to better understand the current situation of the post-digital creation culture in Spain, and the motives behind the title of this text: ‘This Is Our Momento’. A respectful rip-off of a phrase coined by the Mingarro Brothers’ (a.k.a. Brosmind) that could not have come in a more appropriate context. A ‘momento’ which has been entirely witnessed by the OFFF Festival, given its position as an international event born just under 12 years ago in Barcelona with the sole purpose of acting as a window into everything surrounding the movements of the Post-Digital Culture. It’s a gathering to celebrate contemporary creation through an elaborate program of conferences, workshops, performances, and interactive installations, with the involvement of a worldwide array of the best artists out there. Little by little this festival also became the place were a shinning generation of Spanish artists took shape and grew stronger and better.

That’s why it is no coincidence that the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington knocked at the doors of OFFF to ask for a curatorship and develop a book intended to showcase the best Digital Culture manifestations Spain has to offer. The goal is to let the world know about the powerful drive behind its arts and artists.

The making of these projects brought with it the confirmation that Spanish people have a ‘survival capacity’ embedded deep within their DNA, and that artists understood better than anyone that the way to relate to technology is changing. They know what technology can do for them. They know that making it a part of their life has allowed them to look beyond and reach originality with a unique style.

Putting this capacity to good use, Spaniards have faced today’s challenges head on. For years, the brilliant work of some already well-known artists has been the best testimony of this fact. The excellence and care that Alex Trochut puts into every illustration he makes, the mind-bogglingly rich worlds and trips thought up in the brains behind Dvein, the professionalism, versatility and curiosity proper of Vasava, the characteristic elegance of Andreu Balius, the clean and yet

multilayered graphic identities Eduardo del Fraile comes up

with, the simple and weirdly perfect looking work of Toormix, and the playful energy evidenced in the imagery of Boolab, all of them are established entities that happen to be just the tip of the iceberg.

Spain has become a force filled with new talents that make up a body of creative minds with portfolios and potential no less impressive than that of the artists previously mentioned. Each of them has an approach that sets them apart. From the intelligent and brilliant concepts cooked in Carlitos y Patricia’s minds, to the freshness of Atipo, or the particular and often awarded universe of Canada. It is possible to find a team such as Base that consider themselves to be specialists in not specializing in anything, and next to them Brosmind, a studio of a couple of special people with a knack for vitality and bold and sassy talent.

The spectrum of styles is overwhelming. The fun personality of Cocoe, the taste for analogies of Folch Studio, the craft and resilience of director Iván Córdoba, the risky yet brave graphics of Kike Besada, the sophisticated and at the same time rebellious essence of La Camorra, the artisan ways of Losiento, the colors and curvy shapes of Marta Cerdà, the still-life manners of Mr. Oso, the diabolic symmetries of Pablo Abad, the coolness, passion and inquisitiveness of Physalia Studio, the exquisite and optimistic nerve of Popcranc, the perfect compositions of Ritxi Ostáriz, the livelihood within the a-temporal sculptures of Serial Cut, the three-dimensional dreams of Toch Studio, the developed classicism of Two Points. All of them proof of the range of Spanish artists, again, willing to tackle any challenge; willing and committed to create new and unconventional ways to tell stories; willing and eager to take advantage of that mindset and focus every effort into becoming exactly that which they have always wanted to be. So yes, these are good years to live in. It is a moment of true clarity for Spanish creation. A privileged time in a privileged place that was reached only after many years of wondering and searching. A path made slowly but surely, and a process that has contributed greatly to develop a variety of qualities that should be essential to set the course that will grant victory over the ‘crisis’ without being ‘regulated’. Because one thing is certain: this era deserves to be engaged by the bold and the daring, and Spain has plenty of that to spare.

Remedios Varo (Girona, Spain 1908) was a surrealist painter and anarchist. During the Spanish Civil War she fled to Paris where she eventually moved with her second husband, the French surrealist poet Péret. In 1941, Varo was forced into exile during the Nazi occupation of France and moved to Mexico, where she developed and matured her enigmatic and instantly recognizable style. This exhibition brings to light Varo’s legacy. Although her paintings have been interpreted as more surrealist canvases and a product of her passion for mysticism and alchemy, her work carries implications far more significant.

While drawing on the quirky history of the Andrew Freedman Home (AFH), the exhibition This Side of Paradise encourages participating artists to reference the past in a context relevant to the present day realities of the surrounding communities. There are striking parallels between past and present: in its heyday, the Home addressed waves of hardship that would culminate in The Great Recession of the 1930s and since 2008, we find ourselves once again in an era of crippling economic impact. Basque artist Abigail Lazkoz, based in New York, will produce an on-site installation for this exhibition.

The work process involves the creation of sets or dioramas in a very small scale, HO scale to be exact, sometimes inserted in snow-globes and other times inserted in larger water tanks, which are then photographed and produced in a large format. It explores existential issues, loneliness, fear and the human challenges of dealing with the unexpected and change. The work of this artistic duo, Paloma Muñoz and Walter Martin, has been described as dark, post-apocalyptic and humorous.

The exhibition presents religious paintings, still lifes and portraits of royalty from the XVII century to the early XIX century by the great masters who served in the Spanish courts. The exhibit will be complemented by fifteen works by the Spanish School that are similar in subject-matter and chronology and which belong in their most part to the Museo de Arte de Ponce’s permanent collection. This group includes paintings by Luis de Morales, Jusepe de Ribera, El Greco and his school, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and Francisco de Goya, among others.

The Museo de Arte de Ponce will present twenty-five masterpieces from the Museo Nacional del Prado.

Fotofest 2012 is Fourteenth International Biennial of Photography and Photo-related Art. It is the United States’ largest and longest-running international photography festival. This exhibit features the work of 4 international women artist, the Texans Mel Chin and Celia Álvarez Muñoz, the Belgian Charif Benhelima, and the successful Spanish artist Linarejos Moreno. Graduated in Fine Arts from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, and winner of several relevant photography awards and grants, Linarejos Moreno will present a site specific installation integrating large-format photographs printed on burlap and sculptural objects which make part of the concept of the photographic works.

This 12-minute piece by the Spanish choreographic duet Entomo has won 1st prize at the Burgos-New York contest (Spain, 2010) and 1st prize at the Iberoamerican Dance Contest Alicia Alonso (2010, Cuba).

FLAMENCO SOUL PROJECT BY JAVIER lIMÓN Producer, musician, and composer Javier Limón is a legend of Latin American culture. His ability to weave fairytales with the unique twists of the genre garnered him a Latin Grammy in 2004 for Producer of the Year.

For nearly a century the grand masters of flamenco traveled to the United States of America to show their art to the American public. Artists such as Carmen Amaya, José Greco or Sábicas were always welcomed; some of them even remained in the States like the guitarist Sábicas himself, or made films like Carmen Amaya. Even Theodore Roosevelt gifted her a small jacket made of diamonds to dance at the White House. This bond continued to be present throughout the 20th century thanks to artists such as Paco de Lucía, among others.

Now, a hundred years later, flamenco comes back to this country, but in a different way, not as something exotic and foreign to the indigenous culture, but as deep, high quality music. The attitude of the American public is more versatile and receptive than ever and now they can clearly see that flamenco is possibly the most important cultural legacy Spain has to offer to the world in the coming decades.

Not only has the public changed, but also the artists. They do not want to conform themselves to only a traditional and in some way picturesque flamenco. Now young performers know all styles of music of the world: the Mediterranean, African and Arabic influence. It’s extraordinary. There are two musical languages that have influenced flamenco more than anything and in which flamenco feels free: Jazz and Latin music. It would be impossible to list the number of projects that have strengthened the flamenco-Atlantic union between these musical communities. Chick Corea and Paco de Lucía, Bebo and El Cigala, Michael Camilo and Tomatito, Ketama and Caetano Veloso…, the list is endless, but it gives us an idea of how far it is coherent to think that today Latin and African American culture will allow flamenco to land in the New continent in a strongly and solid way. Soul Flamenco offers an up-close look at flamenco. On the one hand, we have flamenco artists who know the flamenco roots and traditions very well, and who are already embedded within the flamenco community and well respected by professionals and by the grand masters in their field. On the other hand, there are young and highly skilled artists whose knowledge of avant-garde music, major music styles of the big music and the world of performing arts in general allow them to transgress and restructure a thousandyear-old art without losing a bit of essence.

In Soul Flamenco we will see a sample of the best flamenco in the world, risky but pure at the same time, in the hands, feet and throats of a group of young talents that set the tempo of the sound of today.

The structure of the show will consist of a journey, a first glance at the oldest and most original styles looking at their distinct evolutions to finally arrive at the experimental flamenco of today. This adventure shows the two reasons why flamenco is a reference to America today:

On the first hand we will make tribute to the flamenco dancers that have kept the flame alive for one hundred years. Belén López will interpret some of the favorite pieces by Carmen Amaya, Israel Cereduela will perform a work of Sabicas, and Ariadna Castellanos will play pieces by Paco de Lucía as she usually does in her concerts. This small tribute of these three big names in flamenco in the United States will be one of the most anticipated parts of the concert.

On the second hand and as part of the final show, we will invite Latin and Jazz musicians, as well as musicians from each city that can enrich the selected repertoire and can bring the unique style of each city to the concert. A Jazz trumpeter from New York or a Latin Conga musician in Miami are some examples that allow us to imagine the magic of the famous celebrations after a flamenco performance. The Great Challenge

Until now, the success of flamenco in the United States was always due to the dance or the guitar. It is easy for an American to know and understand how to listen to flamenco guitar music and of course it is easy to enjoy the sensual turns, steps and movements of the dance, but until now what had never jelled, was the singing. Perhaps because of the language, maybe the melodies are too oriental for an Anglo-Saxon ear, the voices too broken or only by chance, the reality is that the flamenco singer, the corner stone of this art, has never found a place in the United States. There has never been an important figure that has toured the United States singing flamenco; the singer is always there, but only as an accompaniment to the flamenco group.

Now is the time to change this tradition, with singers like Sandra Carrasco and Saúl Quirós we can bring this great form of expression closer to the United States culture successfully. Musicians of the world have influenced their young, versatile and renewing voices, and thanks to this, now they can play any type of repertoire, singing flamenco melodies that touch the heart of the listener.

Once the flamenco singing comes it will never leave. It is so pure that, as with other music, in a few years it will probably become part of the popular American sound. The objective of Flamenco Soul is precisely to bring this wonderful music made from the soul, to the souls of many people. Listening to flamenco for the first time is like seeing the ocean, you never forget it.
