Out of all the arts, architecture is the one that acts the most slowly, but the most surely on the soul. Architects are passionate acrobats who imagine and create places that inspire us, where we live and realize our dreams and destiny. Architects transform chaos into order and shape profoundly our appreciation of beauty as well as our social identity and pride. At the same time, the spaces we inhabit reflect and impact our worldview and our emotions. This blooming season, our spotlight goes to Spanish contemporary architects for their outstanding achievements, contributions, and interactions in the U.S. and globally; and for their role as strategists and futurists who affect the big scheme of things. Two complementary exhibits EXPORT and ALTERNATIVAS/ES, on show in Washington DC, will showcase how Spanish architects have kept the ball moving forward in the face of economic adversities, giving form to uplifting and amazing buildings, landscapes, and cities in our country and overseas. In visual arts, once again, the Meadows Museum in Dallas will delight us with an exhibition of José de Ribera’s drawings, a joint venture with The Prado Museum. The Prado’s finest artworks will also be present in the streets of Santa Fe through large-scale reproductions. This season, there will be a literary event for every type of reader, whether selective, voracious, or genre obsessed. We will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Rubén Darío’s birth and the 25th Poetry Marathon in Spanish. Three contemporary authors will be on tour, from renowned Manuel Rivas to emerging and innovative narrators such as Andrés Barba and Alejandro Palomas. We may also travel back to Spain’s recent history through a comprehensive retrospective of our iconic filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, and learn about the remarkable history of Spanish animation that will be revealed in the series From Doodles to Pixels. Variety is the spice of life. Our offer on music and performing arts has become increasingly diverse to please the demand of the American audiences. Gifted dancer Nacho Duato, Jazz flamenco pianist Chano Dominguez, virtuoso classical piano player Javier Perianes, or thriving rock bands, such as Izal or Yung Beef are great examples of the diversity of musicians that will perform all over the U.S. this season. In Miami we will champion women’s creativity through a multidisciplinary program that will encompass prestigious architects, writers, and visual artists. And all around the country, SPAIN arts & culture will strive to provide you with fresh, worthwhile and heightened experiences, while attempting to make connections between our creative sectors. We are in it for the long haul.

SPANISH ARCHITECTS IN U.S. ACADEMIA

JUAN HERREROS Architect, Professor of the Superior Technical School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and Director of Advanced Studies of the Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation of Columbia University in New York.

The expansion of Spanish architecture beyond our borders is a relatively recent story when compared to that of other countries, although it is always appropriate to differentiate between internationalization and emigration. Among the masters of the modern movement are the first paradigmatic cases of architects, such as Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto or Louis Kahn, who internationalized their practices by developing projects in different parts of the world; and others, like Walter Gropius or Mies van der Rohe, who were forced to abandon their countries and practice full-time in other latitudes. Of the former, there are no noteworthy cases in our country, but, of the latter, there are many significant examples due to the repression in post-civil war Spain that led to the exile of many professionals - Félix Candela, Luis Lacasa, Rafael Bergamín, Martín Domínguez - who had to develop an important part of their work in other countries. The case of Josep Lluís Sert is usually considered as paradigmatic because of his unparalleled professional success in the United States and his important academic career associated with Harvard University.

Nonetheless, it was not until the late 1970s, when the first Spanish architects, in both the academic and professional practices, were called upon by international groups to become active members of a discipline that no longer knew borders. It was during those years when some of Spain´s nationally and internationally recognized architects - such as Rafael Moneo, who is regarded as the pioneer of this new wave of architects - began to conduct substantial work outside of Spain, while preserving and operating from their firms’ original locations through an academic and constructive international deployment. As they laid the groundwork for the next generations, the expansion has been profuse since then, mostly based on sporadic incursions while never cutting the cord from their local operating centers.

The financial crisis, which unleashed in Spain after the economic bubble collapsed at the beginning of the century, resulted again in forced migration. This time, however, those that left benefited from the recognition achieved by all of those who were able to internationalize their practices without having to abandon their country.

The American Academia has certainly been the institution that has more assertively appreciated and trusted Spanish architects who were ready to work in an environment much more different than theirs. It is so that there are few architecture schools in the U.S. today that don’t include at least one Spaniard in its faculty, in some instances in executive positions such as Directors, Chairmen or Deans. Undoubtedly, the Spanish academic tradition based on a faculty mostly comprised by working professionals who have distinctively never drawn boundaries between theory and practice, together with the notion of the project as the main instrument for thought and action in architecture, have contributed to the enthusiastic welcoming of these architects as members of leading American universities. This phenomena is particularly interesting if we consider that the centers, where these professional have developed their academic careers in the U.S., belong to a university model -private, small in scale, with substantial resources and well defined personalities- that greatly differs from the model in which they were trained as professionals and educators: enormous public schools, limited budgets, and a difficult environment for character development due to the wide range of subjects and faculty involved. Additionally, the American educational system focuses on speculative and conceptual practices, on clear and coherent discourses, and on the development of communication skills, and is much less interested in the technical aspects of the project, the functional rationality and the urban integration, aspects that are so valued by Spanish universities.

Faced with the pointlessness of presenting a comparison based on value judgments between the European and American models, it would be worth considering the extraordinary value and benefit that may arise from the experiences of this community of Spanish professors who are teaching in some of the most prestigious academic institutions in the U.S. I am obviously referring to the reward of the already mentioned confrontation of pedagogical models and the way it relates to the different approaches of the professional practice on either side of the Atlantic. It would be good to remind ourselves that we are not presented with another example of non-reward one-way migration of talent phenomena, but with a collection of vital paths that may be destined to go back to square one, to return to their origins, and that should facilitate the redesign of our own educational institutions. The distant examination of who we are and what we do, and the conscious reflection of what we are really capable of achieving in contexts much different than our own, represent the best raw materials for reconsidering the potential of our schools of architecture. In other words, this return voyage can be the best starting point from which to aspire to an extraordinary future, as long as the experiences of these expatriate professors find a way of offering a critical, constructive, and creative interpretation of our academic and professional environment, an environment that may be consequently illuminated by the exhilarating journey of Spanish architects around the world. XIII Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism

The Thirteenth Spanish Architecture and Urbanism Biennial (XIII BEAU), entitled Alternativas / Alternatives, features 22 jury selected projects completed between January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2015 by contemporary Spanish architects. The exhibit, which also includes an additional 20 shortlisted works, features large-scale image displays and audiovisual commentary about the winning projects, as well as drawing reproductions and architectural models. Many of the works presented, under the categories of Heritage, Planning and Innovation, employ sustainable practices and rely on local materials. The projects – which vary from small-scale works, such as residential homes, to mid-size interventions, such as schools and public parks – showcase the ability of Spanish architects to formulate innovative solutions with both a limited budget and modest resources. This exhibit is curated by BEAU Co-Directors and jury members Begoña Díaz-Urgorri, Juan Domingo Santos and Carmen Moreno Álvarez, and overseen by Francisco Mangado, Spain’s General Coordinator of Biennales. It will be presented as part of AIA Architecture Month together with Export: Spanish Achitecture Abroad, after previously being on show at La Alhambra (Granada, Spain) and Cooper Union (New York). PUBLIC SPACE? LOST AND FOUND

GARDENS FOR THE SENSES

Inspired by Spanish artists and MIT professor Antoni Muntadas´s early coining of the term “media landscape”, Public Space? Lost and Found (2016, MIT School of Architecture and Planning) documents how critical spatial practices have expanded the concept far beyond the physical confines of the city square. The book considers the role of aesthetic practices within the construction, identification, and critique of shared territories, and how artists or architects can heighten our awareness of rapidly changing formulations of public space in the age of digital media, vast ecological crisis and civic uprisings.

Spanish landscape designer Javier Mariategui will present his book Gardens for the Senses, a compilation of sophisticated and harmonic garden designs in Spain. Javier incorporates elements from the distant horizon making them part of the garden, allowing the grandeur of the landscape to invade every corner of the house whilst making house and garden a single place. His style is not dogmatic, is made of order and disorder, straight lines and curved, the wild chaos of nature and strict geometrical patterns.

Between Heaven and Hell

The Drawings of Jusepe de Ribera

The Meadows and The Prado have joined forces to publish and promote the first catalogue raisonné of the Baroque master’s drawings. WHEN

José de Ribera (1591-1652) was both an extraordinary painter and a prolific graphic artist. It is the strength of his works on paper in addition to his paintings that sets Ribera apart from his Caravaggist contemporaries. Between Heaven and Hell celebrates the joint publication by the Museo del Prado and the Meadows Museum of the first catalogue raisonné of the artist’s drawings. On view will be a total of 47 drawings (nearly a third of the artist’s surviving output), 12 prints, 11 paintings, and one relief sculpture. The project is the first major monographic exhibition on the artist in the U.S. in the last 25 years, and the most comprehensive one ever dedicated to his drawings.

PICASSO’S PICASSO/ DREAM AND RIVERA LIE OF FRANCO This exhibition commemorates the anniversary of Picasso’s great painting by showcasing a pair of prints in the Meadows collection that was transformed by Guernica: Picasso’s Dream and Lie of Franco. The production of these prints was interrupted by the bombing of the town of Guernica on April 26, 1937, the event that inspired his painting; Picasso returned to the prints only after his painting was complete. The Dream and Lie of Franco will be displayed alongside Spanish Civil War posters from the Meadows collection that offer a thematic and visualcultural context for Picasso’s graphic works.

A focused exhibition, Picasso/Rivera: Still Life and the Precedence of Form explores the story of spirited rivalry between Picasso and Rivera through the lens of selected works, notably Picasso’s Still Life in a Landscape (1915) from the Meadows Museum’s collection, and Rivera’s Still Life with Gray Bowl (Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, Austin), painted in the same year and displayed together for the first time. Along with a key work by each artist generously loaned from the Columbus Museum of Art, this group of paintings will outline the visual dialogue taking place in 1915 between these two giants of modern art.

DE LO POSIBLE THE (OF BEAUTIFUL POSSIBILITIES) BRAIN Héctor Canonge and Verónica Peña present De Lo Posible (Of Possibilities), a movementbased performance-art work informed by Butoh practice and traditional dances from Spain and South America. The performance explores human (dis)connections, language barriers, non-verbal communication, and intercultural exchange between two subjects (a male and a female performer) belonging to different yet interconnected cultures. The above notions are explored through a performance that combines choreographed corporeal movement, dance theater, and multimedia elements such as dynamic projected text, live electronic sounds, lighting design, and the use of visual objects. The performance consists of three interrelated parts: Encounter, Rupture, and Harmony.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal, considered the father of modern neuroscience, was also an exceptional artist. His theory that the brain is composed of individual cells rather than a tangled single web is the basis of neuroscience today. He drew the brain in a way that provided a clarity exceeding that achieved by photographs. The drawings that Cajal made are not only landmarks of science but also of the art of drawing and the exploration of human nature. This exhibition of Cajal’s eighty drawings, many appearing for the first time in the United States, is organized in collaboration with the Cajal Institute at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). After the debut, Cajal’s original drawings will visit other Institutions throughout the United States and Canada.

150 YEARS OF RUBÉN DARÍO

25TH MARATÓN DE LA POESÍA

To commemorate 150 years since the birth of Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío, the Embassy of Spain in collaboration with the Embassy of Nicaragua and the Library of Congress, will present a discussion about Darío’s historical and literary legacy with Professors Gwen Kirkpatrick (Georgetown University), Alba Aragón (Bridgewater State University), and Nicaraguan poet Milagros Terán. Rubén Darío, pseudonym of Félix Rubén García Sarmiento (born January 18, 1867, Metapa, Nicaragua—died February 6, 1916, León), was an influential Nicaraguan poet, journalist, and diplomat. As a leader of the Spanish American literary movement known as Modernismo, he revivified and modernized poetry in Spanish on both sides of the Atlantic through his experiments with rhythm, metre, and imagery. From his artistic resourcefulness and technical perfection, Darío is considered to be one of the greatest Spanish-language poets of our time.

El Maratón De La Poesía is the only Spanishlanguage poetry marathon in the country bringing together Spanish-language poets. This event, hosted on a yearly basis by the Teatro de la Luna in Arlington, VA, and at the Library of Congress, is curated by poet, and literary critic Rei Berroa (Dominican Republic/United States). This year´s festival will feature Spanish poet, Elena Medel (b. 1985), one of the most talented and promising young writers in Spain today. Her poetry includes Mi primer Bikini (2002; translated into English by Lizzie Davis, My First Bikini, 2015), Tara (2006) and Chatterton (Loewe Young Poets Prize, 2014) and the chapbooks Vacaciones (2004) and Un Soplo en el Corazón (2007). Medel has reunited her poems in the volume Un día Negro en una Casa de Mentira (2015), and she has been translated into a dozen of languages. She is the editorial director of La Bella Varsovia, a publishing house devoted to poetry.

PEDRO ALMODÓVAR TODD HITCHCOCK Director of Programming, American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center.

High H

eels

Pedro Almodóvar was previously the subject of a 2005 retrospective at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, and the 2011 traveling series “Good Morning, Freedom! Spanish Cinema After Franco” also included six of the filmmaker’s earliest and famously outrageous films. Now with the 2016 release of his 20th feature film, Julieta, the prolific director’s evolution and artistic phases are more distinctly seen and savored. To commemorate this moment, career-spanning retrospectives have been mounted at MoMA in New York, Cinefamily in Los Angeles, and once again at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in the Washington, DC area. Almodóvar began making short films in the mid-1970s—low-budget, satirically campy amusements made for an underground audience of Madrid punks, dissidents and thrill-seekers. The 1975 death of Francisco Franco after 40 years of repressive rule in Spain began a period of liberalization in the country. This was the moment that birthed not only Almodóvar’s filmmaking career but those of Fernando Trueba and Iván Zulueta. Now, subjects that had long been taboo— sex outside of marriage, homosexuality, drug use, criticism of the Church and Spanish government—could be represented in films. Almodóvar’s films went the furthest, casually but purposefully including all of this material in sensationalistic fashion. He used outrageous plots and characters: nuns who deal drugs, sexobsessed people driven to criminality, world-weary pornographers, bizarre, incestual love triangles. And, notably, Almodóvar foregrounded characters outside hetero-normative sexuality—androgynous, gay or trans—characters still underrepresented in world cinema today, but a revolutionary act in 1980s Spain.

Talk to

Her

25

These early films, beginning with the hedonistic Madrid nightlife exposé Pepi, Luci, Bom in 1980, scandalized and delighted audiences with their hyperbolic scenarios and sardonic comedy — full of scandalous sexual behavior, riotous color, profane passions and flamboyant fashions. Films like Matador (1986) and Law of desire (1987) mix neo-noir melodrama with subversive comedy; Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown (1988) pushes screwball comedy all the way to surreal farce; Tie me up! tie me down! (1990) is a risqué love story between a kidnapper and his victim; High heels (1991) and Kika (1993) mine the rich madness of image-obsessed media professionals.

The Skin I Live In Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

Pedro Almodóvar

The ‘90s saw the beginning of a more serious-minded phase for the filmmaker, with more full-blooded characters, impressively intricate plotting and sincere emotionalism. The flower of my secret (1995), a loose adaptation of a Dorothy Parker story, finds successful but bored novelist Marisa Paredes dropping her pen name to go work as a book critic, her first task being a takedown of her novelist alter-ego. Was there possibly a subtext here indicating Almodóvar’s attitude to his own films at this moment, and desire to go in a new direction? Live flesh (1997) was an adaptation of a Ruth Rendell thriller, its story of intertwined fate and revenge transposed to the rapidly changing Spain between 1970 and the early 1990s. The film also helped break the careers of young stars Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. Almodóvar won Best Screenplay Oscars for the masterful melodramas All about my mother (1999) and Talk to her (2002). Bad education (2004), where two men abused by a school priest as boys deal with the fallout years later, cemented Almodóvar’s debt and dedication to Alfred Hitchcock in its intricate, exquisite plotting. Like Law of desire before it, Bad education centered on a filmmaker character, as did Broken embraces (2009), which pushed the meta-narrative connection even further in that its protagonist’s film-within-a-film clearly resembles Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown. wn!

As daringly subversive as Almodóvar had been in his career to date, nothing could have prepared audiences for the horrific dark thriller The skin I live in (2011). Antonio Banderas, reuniting with the director who made him a star for the first time in over 20 year, plays a mad scientist whose depraved experiments are on par with those of Udo Kier in Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein. But the film is far from camp, much more like Hitchcock adapting Robert Louis Stevenson. By this point, fans of the frothy ‘80s films had become vocal about their nostalgia for the naughty fun of Almodóvar’s earliest films. I’m so excited!, where a flamboyant Transatlantic flight crew drugs and entertains their passengers to distract them from an impending technical disaster, gestured back to those days. While the film was a hit in Spain, it failed to find favor internationally as his other films have. Which brings us to Julieta. Adapting three short stories by Canadian writer Alice Munro, Almodóvar has crafted a masterpiece that draws upon his previous passions and obsessions—sexual desire and amour fou; mother-daughter love and rivalry; the power of the past to play havoc on one’s present—but in the service of an exquisitely rendered melodrama. It stands with Almodóvar’s very best work, and confirms the true trajectory of the director’s later phase as a more mature, literary-minded filmmaker and a true heir to his hero, Hitchcock. In this light, the outré audacity of his earliest films should not be mourned as something lost, but appreciated for what they are, the daring experiments of a young provocateur. One who has grown over his 40 years of filmmaking into the masterful storyteller that he is today.

High Heels

The iconoclastic Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar may have made his reputation as an enfant terrible, but his contributions to world cinema — 20 feature films; Oscars®, Golden Globes, Goyas, Donatellos and César awards; a career retrospective at MoMA — now place him in the category of grand master. As Almodóvar continues to grow as an artist, his work takes its rightful place among the greats of world cinema. Following wide acclaim for his latest masterpiece Julieta, AFI Silver presents a thorough survey of Almodóvar’s feature films. All films in the series are in Spanish with English subtitles.

José Val del Omar: A Retrospective

Val del Omar was devoted to experimenting with the sensorial possibilities of cinema, creating a unique blend of art and science. He is part of a global history of images, sounds, utopias, and inventions. This expansive perspective may be a way to eschew recurring questions—was Val del Omar ahead of his time? Was he an anachronistic remnant of the past? Overdue for recognition in the U.S, his films are must-sees for anyone hoping to fully understand the history of avant-garde and expanded cinema in the 20th century. Three series of films will be screened: Misiones Pedagógicas de la Segunda República (Misiones Pedagógicas of the Spanish Second Republic), Tríptico Elemental de España (Elementary Triptych of Spain) & Sin fin (Never Ending). With the participation among others of Sharon Olds, Bob Holman, Steven T. FROM DOODLES CELEBRATING TO PIXELS PLÁCIDO From Doodles to Pixels is a response to the desire to showcase a little known history —that of Spanish animation cinema. Films like Chico & Rita (Javier Mariscal, Fernando Trueba y Tono Errando, 2010), Las aventuras de Tadeo Jones (Tad, the Lost Explorer) (Enrique Gato, 2012) or Pos Eso (Possessed) (Sam, 2014) have put Spanish animation on the international map, but these examples are just the tip of the iceberg of the talent and years of hard work involved in creating art and industry, in some cases against all the odds. This series is the result of a task of research, revision and recovery of historical material in dialogue with more recent works. From Doodles to Pixels is a coproduction of the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona and AC/E that brings together a selection of films animated using diverse techniques that represent turbulent times ranging from the early twentieth century to the present day.

Plácido Domingo is a legend unlike any other opera star, and Lyric Opera is celebrating his unparalleled talents with a celebration of his acclaimed artistry.

He has sold millions of albums and won a dozen Grammy Awards. His voice has soared into the hearts of music lovers in the greatest opera houses in the world, in intimate recitals, and in packed arenas.

The evening will include Act Two of Verdi’s La Traviata, with Mr. Domingo singing the role of Giorgio Germont alongside soprano Ailyn Pérez in her Lyric debut and tenor Michael Spyres. Ms. Pérez and Mr. Spyres will then join Mr. Domingo for the second half of the concert in a selection of popular opera arias and duets from the Italian and French repertoire. Maestro Eugene Kohn conducts this special event, which also features the acclaimed sound of the Lyric Opera Chorus and Orchestra.

Chano Domínguez At DC Jazz Festival

Pianist Chano Domínguez’s style is rooted in an unusual integration between the rhythms and language of jazz and flamenco, placing him in the top circle of musicians practicing this art-form. His interpretive talent have led him to collaborations with stellar artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Jack DeJohnette, Paquito de Rivera, Herbie Hancock, Paco de Lucía, and Enrique Morente, among others. The Wall Street Journal had this to say about Chano upon the release of his Flamenco Sketches album: “Chano Domínguez is playing these melodies with more beauty and imagination than virtually anyone since Miles Davis & Bill Evans.” His music has also been featured by various big bands and orchestras including the Orquesta Nacional de España, the WDR Big Band, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Josemi Carmona y Javier Colina De Cerca

Josemi Carmona and Javier Colina establish a musical conversation, with deep flamenco echoes and unique jazz swing, a natural dialogue blending different musical languages. Guitar and double bass, flamenco and jazz, meet in a repertoire conceived with refinement and love to detail. Gems of the Latin American songbook live together with the elegant compositions of Josemi Carmona, and with some astonishing discoveries in jazz and flamenco. Their live performance is delicate and powerful at equal parts: they are accomplices in this dialogue and dive into all genres with a deep knowledge and personality. They know how to respect the meaning of time in each music, they dominate improvisation and understand when it is necessary to pause for a rest in an exquisite nocturne melody. They speak elegantly about bitter truths, love stories, long nights of music, flamenco tangos and muĂąequitas lindas, and weep with a flamenco farruca with a bouquet to Piazzolla.

YO, CARMEN BY MARÍA PAGÉS

AN EVENING WITH LUZ SAN MIGUEL AND CHAMBER DANCE PROJECT

The Spoleto Festival presents María Pagés whose passion embodies the legendary character of Carmen in a vibrant ode to femininity. Accompanied by some of Spain’s most talented musicians, she stands out once again as an iconic figure of flamenco. From the tale of the sultry gypsy with a fateful destiny emerges a multifaceted, sincere, and forceful woman. Pagés sketches a portrait of the eternal feminine free of prejudice and conventions, endowed with the voice of all women. The fiery bodies of the dancers undulate and prance, their feet rooted to the floor while pounding out fierce rhythms. This company’s performances at the Festival in 2003 brought people to their feet with cheers of exuberant appreciation, just as Yo, Carmen surely will.

Known for her gorgeous line, emotional rendering of roles, versatility and wit, Luz is in her fourth year with DC-based Chamber Dance Project directed by Diane Coburn Bruning. The evening will feature her in works from Chamber Dance Project’s repertoire with partner Gian Carlo Perez performed with the company’s string quartet and guest musicians. Luz will converse with the audience about her upbringing in Spain and major career throughout Europe and the US. A reception following the performance will feature Luz’ old family recipe for Sangria while discussing her love of cooking Spanish food.
