“Without a doubt it was the Press Association’s course that gave me the edge to get my job. Their dedication and enthusiasm was inspiring, and while you will have to be prepared for four months of hard work and full days, they are with you every step of the way. I came away with new friends, a bulging contacts book, and the assurance to sell myself as a journalist.” Madeline Ratcliffe 2015 Graduate: Producer, Sky News

HOW THE SPA CAN HELP YOU As a not-for-profit organisation, we’re constantly striving to make the SPA as useful as it can be for student journalists. Here are just some of the ways we can help you…
Online networking & communities With more than 130 members and more than 650 people in our Facebook group, we’re the biggest online network of student journalists in the UK - and we’re still growing. Share your experiences, get tips from fellow journos and become part of the community. There’s opportunities to share and collaborate work and we will also keep you up to date with all the latest jobs, graduate schemes and opportunities.
Real life events, networking & training As well as having a huge Twitter and Facebook community, we run conferences and socials across the two countries, from London to Dublin. As well as getting the chance to meet other student journalists and swap papers and ideas, we’ll also bring some of the best speakers in the country to you. We’re great believers that student journalism only grows stronger with collaboration.
Regular training, resources and opportunities As well as enabling you to share ideas with our students, we also bring our own resources to the table. Weekly #TrainingTuesdays help to brush up your knowledge on everything from InDesign to media law and we also work with partner companies to help provide scholarships and discounts for everything from newsroom software to courses.
15 Showing off your very best work Sometimes, great articles don’t get the attention they deserve. But we know how to make a good story go national. With our weekly #FlashFriday round-ups of the best stories and #SPAPapers regularly showing off your best front pages, we can show the world what you’ve been up too. Our additional FOI Awards and Best of the Year also help to show off the very best talent, and our national awards at SPANC are one of the largest and most prestigious student journalism awards in the country.
Backing you when you need it Being a student journalist can be tough at times, so we, as well as our hundreds of student members, can support you if you need backing for a campaign. From bolstering a petition to save Forge Press last year to backing Rebecca Pinnington from Pi Media, we’ve given student publications support when they’ve needed it most. We’ve also worked on national campaigns such as Hands Off FOI, to help protect the interests of our members both now, and in the future.
We can offer advice Finally, as an inexperienced student journalist, becoming the editor of your publication or handling a tough story can be a little scary or overwhelming. But fear not because every member of the SPA executive committee has been in your position at one point or another, and we are more than willing to give you advice from our perspective or advise you on where you need to go for help next. We can also refer you to professionals, for example who could help you legally, where you need it.
16
AWARDS SHORTLIST This year’s SPA awards have broken all records. With more than 1,000 entries across our 16 categories, judging has been an extremely difficult task and the standard of entry has been exceptionally high. Our shortlisted entrants are examples of some of the very best student media and journalists across the two countries and have proved a difficult take for our expert judges to select from.
