Welcome

T

hinking of installing a Spa or Pool? It will be more than a great financial investment in your home but also an invaluable investment in your family’s health and lifestyle. Imagine a resort style facility in your own backyard!

One of the most obvious benefits of having a Swimming Spa or Pool is the simple act of relaxation, either on your own or with family and friends – sit back, relax and let the cares of the world fade away. For many people, there is nothing better than an early morning dip or a soak in a nice warm Spa, especially after a hard day’s work. For others, floating or sliding through water invokes feelings of tranquillity. Spending time in a Spa or Pool is a very healthy choice for you to make even if you are not swimming laps but simply performing basic aerobic activity. In fact walking in water has been proven to ease arthritis pain. Swimming is however one of the best ways to get fit and stay in-shape. It provides a cardiovascular workout getting your heart and lungs pumping, working all the muscles of the body without the harsh impact normally associated with other forms of exercise. Of course, it will burn off some of those unwanted calories as well. Kicking workouts, water aerobics, pool running or a regular swim will all give you a great exercise session without the weight of your body pounding your ankles and knees with each move – a huge benefit for anyone suffering joint pain. In addition to the health benefits, a Pool or Spa at home helps kill boredom, and is a real stress buster. So, put the TV remote aside, close the lap-top, switch off the computer games and gear up for some real fun in the sun. Daily exercise is essential for us all and a Pool or Spa at home is so convenient. You don’t have to drive anywhere or pay membership fees. With modern water and energy saving equipment and new technologies they are now cheaper than ever to run and are so easy to maintain. A Swimming Pool or Spa is a true investment which gives you real returns like smiles, good health and wonderful memories, as well as improved property values. Swimming (or even just splashing around) is a great activity that can be enjoyed by all, no matter what age, in the privacy and security of your own home. Association Secretary, Adrian Hart.

It’s Heaven on Earth WITH YOUR OWN POOL OR SPA

H

aving a pool means you don’t have to face the crowds when you feel like a swim. There are no hassles with parking and no problems with finding a pleasant and safe spot on the beach or at the local public pool. Whether you’re young, a senior citizen or somewhere in between, having your own pool or spa will add a new dimension to the quality of your life, and will change your lifestyle completely. Your own pool is right there, in your own backyard. Its rippling waters provide a constant invitation to change into your bathers in the privacy of your own home and hop in for a cooling dip or an energetic swim. Or, if it’s a spa, relaxing in warm, soothing water. Because you look after the water in your own pool or spa yourself, you know it’s safe and free from harmful bacteria. That’s wonderful peace of mind in these days of increased water pollution along our coastline and the ever increasing worry of contractible diseases. Parents with young children find they have total control over the supervision of their youngsters with no more anxiety about what dangers they might be facing from turbulent surf or harassment from older kids.

6

A private pool is the perfect way to bring the family together in today’s fast paced society

Parents with teenagers find the pool helps keep the family together and they get to meet their children’s teenage friends in a pleasant family atmosphere. Older people find that having their own pool reawakens their interests by giving them a social activity they can handle with ease. And, with the move to water aerobics, it’s one of the best ways for everyone to enjoy regular exercise and muscle toning while having fun.

YOUR OWN POOL OR SPA

An aid to health

Space not a problem

We are becoming a more health conscious society and a pool or spa fits our needs perfectly. A few laps in your own pool on a regular basis throughout the season will help tone up your muscles and leave you feeling invigorated. Those with arthritis, for example, are being encouraged to use a pool for special exercises where the buoyancy of the water helps their condition.

Blocks of land are getting smaller these days and many people with small backyards have solved the space problem in one of two ways.

Maintenance is easy Technology has provided us with many wonderful products, such as microwaves and mobile phones, and it’s the same with swimming pools and spas. In days gone by, maintenance meant many hours of laborious cleaning and monitoring - Not any more. Today’s pool and spa owners spend very little time maintaining their asset, as nearly all of the work can be done by time saving automatic systems. There’s still some maintenance to do, naturally, but modern techniques make it easy and simple.

Some have opted for a smaller pool, as their main purpose of having a pool is for entertainment and family pleasure. There is a wide range of pools designed specifically for small spaces which provide all the advantages of pool ownership. They often have the effect of turning an otherwise uninviting area into a centre of family enjoyment and entertainment. On the other hand, installing a spa can solve the space problem. Spas require less room, yet still provide the entertaining benefits of a pool. Another advantage of spas is that they are particularly suited to areas where the weather is colder and they can even be installed indoors.

It’s even easier if you use a SPASA Accredited Operator, who will come to your home and do it for you.

BUILDING YOUR POOL

Who should I CHOOSE TO BUILD MY POOL? “Talk to friends or relatives who own pools and discuss their experiences involving colour, size, location, equipment, finishes, landscaping, building and maintenance time, and any problems involving their pool construction”

W

hen selecting someone to build your pool, you should use an experienced, specialist pool builder who is licensed with the Queensland Building Services Authority and who has attained SPASA membership. Talk to your local SPASA member and arrange for them to inspect your chosen site and provide a written quotation, details of their warranties and contract terms. If you wish, also ask the SPASA member for contact details of pools they have previously constructed so that you can contact the owners to discuss the process with them.

At the time of quotation Take the time and discuss your requirements in detail with the contractor to ensure that the following items are considered and understood: • The nominated “datum” or fixed reference point and the nominated height of the pool in relation to that “datum” • Shape, position, interior lining, size and depth of the pool • The estimated costs of earthworks, including tip fees for the removal of excess soil • The number and type of inlets, skimmer boxes and drains that will be required • The type of filtration required – its capacity and the positioning of the equipment • Accessories such as underwater lights, cleaners, ladders and handrails etc. • If water is required for the initial fill (in areas with water restrictions), the estimated cost Also discuss whether the following items are included or not (backwash line, sewer connection, gas/electrical line from meter to heater, service diversions, council fees, removal and/or replacement of fences, tip fees or piering etc)

Before you sign a contract • Ensure that you understand both your responsibilities, and the contractor’s responsibilities, and exactly what work is included for each (eg fencing, landscaping and pool surrounds) • Check with the Building Services Authority (www.qbcc.qld.gov.au) to ensure that your contractor is currently licensed, and • Check the SPASA website at www.spasaqld.com to ensure the contractor is a SPASA member

The contract The Domestic Building Contracts Act 2000 (Qld) requires that approved written contracts are used to cover the supply and construction of a swimming pool in Queensland. SPASA members can provide such a contract, which covers details such as: Physical dimensions; shape; size; water depth; interior finish; type of filtration and access; the progress payment schedule; when payments are due; and what payments specifically cover unforeseen events such as encountering rock during excavation, wet weather and warranties of the pool and associated equipment. Only SPASA members can provide a “SPASA Recommended” Contract, which is designed specifically for use in Queensland, in accordance with the latest legislation, and which in its simple English form helps both the customer and the pool contractor. 10

POOL BUILDING CONTRACTS

Swimming Pool Contracts CONSTRUCTION, INSTALLATION & RENOVATION

T

he purpose of the ‘Domestic Building Contracts Act 2000’, in regulating domestic building contracts is to achieve a reasonable balance between the interests of building contractors and building owners, and to maintain appropriate standards of conduct in the building industry. The Members of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Queensland inc. (SPASA Queensland) are continuously working with Legal Advisors, Consumer Groups and various Government Authorities to ensure that the “SPASA Queensland Recommended” Contracts for Swimming Pool Construction, Installation, Renovation or Other Works always comply with the current Government requirements, and ensure the best protection of the rights of all parties involved (i.e. the Contractor and the Consumer).

The Act Provides that: A “Contract Information Statement” approved by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) must be given to Consumers (when the Contract is entered into), and Consumers have a five day ‘cooling off’ period from the date of receiving a signed copy of the Contract and the QBCC-approved ‘Contract Information Statement’. 12

The SPASA Queensland Recommended range of Contracts: • a re only available from SPASA Queensland Members, and meet all of the requirements of the legislation; • are able to be covered under SPASA’s “Watertight Contract Benefits” scheme; • include a QBCC-approved “Contract Information Statement’ • include information about dispute resolution procedures as required by the Act. • a re the only Contracts that, hand-in-hand with Watertight Contract Benefits, offer Consumers the best available package of protection and support.

QBCC Requirements Every Consumer should insist on their rights under the Act and demand to see a QBCC Licence, a QBCC approved “Contract Information Statement”, together with a written Contract that does comply with the Act, and has been specifically written for Swimming Pool Construction, Installation, Renovation or Other Works.

CONTRACT BENEFITS

Ask your contractor for the Watertight Benefits Information Booklet or check www.spasaqld.com.au

T

here is no Government Statutory Insurance for Residential Swimming Pool Construction available in Queensland (Unlike Residential Home construction, where the QBCC provides Insurance protection for Consumers). As an additional and exclusive benefit for Customers who contract with them, the Members of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Queensland Inc. (SPASA Queensland) have established a mutual discretionary trust fund (the SPASA Benefits Trust) which provides that SPASA Queensland as the Trustee, in its sole and absolute discretion, can pay certain benefits (called Watertight Contract Benefits) to participating Customers to ensure that in the event of the Death or Insolvency of the Contractor: • Your Residential Swimming Pool Construction Contract can be completed, and • Your entitlements (up to 6 years), under the required Statutory Warranty period can be honoured

In Summary, the benefits of Watertight Contract Benefits are: Benefit - Part A. “Watertight” Contract Completion may indemnify you for all costs (in excess of the amounts retained by you) that are reasonably and necessarily incurred to complete the Works, as specified in your SPASA Queensland Recommended Domestic Contract for the Construction, Installation or Renovation of a Domestic Swimming Spa/Pool, following the failure of the Contractor to do so, as a result of “Contractor Default.”

• This part of the Benefit commences on the date of Practical Completion (copy of the certificate required), and automatically ceases 6 years from that date.

Can my Contract be Covered? If your swimming spa or pool is for personal private use, and you have signed a SPASA Queensland Recommended Domestic Contract with a current Member of SPASA Queensland – your Contract can be covered by Watertight Contract Benefits upon completion of the prescribed Application Form, payment of the prescribed Contribution Fee and issuing of the benefit certificate.

How much is my contract covered for? Your contract will be covered up to the value of the Contract (or, up to $300,000) – whichever is the lesser amount.

Can I get “Watertight” Contract Benefits from any Swimming Pool Contractor? NO! These Consumer Benefits are only available from current Members of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Queensland Inc. (SPASA Queensland). Contact the office on 3252 6777 or visit the website (www.spasaqld.com.au) to check if your contractor’s membership is up to date.

What do I do if I think there may be a claim? Immediately you become aware of any circumstances you think are likely to give rise to a claim under these Benefits you must advise SPASA Queensland (as trustee), in writing, as soon as practicable, and; within 90 days of becoming aware – you must notify the Trustee by a written claim form and pay the non-refundable excess.

What is “Contractor Default”? “Contractor Default” is the failure by the Contractor as a result of the declared Death of the Contractor, or, the Contractor becoming Bankrupt, or the Contractor entering into a Composition, Deed or Scheme of Arrangement with or for the benefit of creditors, or, the Contractor (being a company) is placed into Liquidation or Receivership (and there is a failure by the appointed Administrations to complete the Contracted pool works or, (following completion of the pool works) failure to complete any “Statutory Warranty” work required (as determined by the “Trustee”).

What do I have to do to get these Benefits? • When you are about to sign a Contract with a SPASA Queensland Member, make sure you ask for and obtain a Benefits Application Form for “Watertight” Contract Benefits • Ensure that both you and the current SPASA Queensland Member both complete and sign the Application Form

• Simply said, this means that if the SPASA Queensland Member is unavailable to complete the obligations under the Contract due to “Contractor Default”, and you are covered by Watertight Contract Benefits, the Contract can be completed

• Ensure that both the completed form and the contribution fee are sent immediately to the SPASA Queensland Office.

• Even if your Contract has not yet started you may be able to recover the deposit paid (less any required “Excess”)

• If you have not received a confirming Benefit Certificate within 21 days, or, by the proposed commencement date of the Contracted works you should immediately contact the SPASA Queensland

• “Watertight” Contract Completion Benefits do not cover disputes, any workmanship defects or other warranty items – it simply ensures the completion of the Contracted Works then, when your contract is completed: Benefit - Part B. “Watertight” Defective Construction may indemnify you for pro-rata costs (following completion of the contract), that are reasonably and necessarily incurred to rectify “Defective Works” (which adversely affect the structural adequacy, performance or functional use of the swimming pool/spa) up to a period of six years after the Date of Practical Completion of your contract 14

• S imply said, this means that if the SPASA Queensland Member is unavailable to complete the work required under the Statutory Warranty requirements due to “Contractor Default”, and you are covered by Watertight Contract Benefits, the work required to repair, replace or reinstate the Works (as per the QBCC Statutory warranty) will be completed.

• SPASA Queensland (as Trustee) will check and record your Benefit details, and send you a Benefit Certificate confirming that you are registered for these Benefits

How do I find out more about “Watertight” contract benefits? A complete copy of the SPASA Benefits Terms document can be obtained from SPASA Queensland Members, the SPASA Queensland Office, or viewed on the website www.spasaqld.com.au It might cost a little more to deal with a SPASA Queensland Member but check out the benefits.

POOL TYPES

Which type

OF POOL SHOULD I CHOOSE? Above ground pools An above ground pool can cost significantly less than an inground pool. Yet, the benefits are the same - fun for all the family. They can even be used by families who do not own their own home and want to take it with them later. Above ground pools vary in size from wading pools for children to adult sized. There can be a major saving in labour and soil removal costs on some sites when using an above ground pool, as some are specially engineered to be partially or fully installed in the ground.

Generally, above ground pools are prefabricated, making installation quick and easy. The main requirement is to carefully prepare an absolutely level site for the pool. Some above ground pools have vinyl liners whilst others are fibreglass and offer both a range of colours and surface finishes.

Fibreglass pools Fibreglass pools have taken a great leap forward in popularity due to the introduction of space age technology. Today’s fibreglass pool not only offers an amazing range of shapes and sizes, but an equally impressive selection of colours and finishes to suit personal preferences and the setting in which the pool will be installed.

If you have an unusual site, don’t be deterred. Talk to a SPASA Member. New innovations for above ground pools include spa nooks, deep ends and a variety of shapes, including keyhole and kidney shapes.

74

POOL TYPES

One of the attractions of fibreglass pools is their short installation time. Installation begins with excavation to suit the dimensions of the pool, (including any step, swimouts or safety ledges that can be built into the fibreglass shell). Fibreglass pools are pre-manufactured and customised to exacting conditions. This means you can shop around for the pool of your choice and know precisely what you’ll get in terms of size, shape and colour.

Concrete pools Undoubtedly the oldest type of pool construction, concrete pools, were built and used by the ancient Romans. Many of these pools still exist, a number in amazingly good condition. As with all inground pools, construction of a concrete pool begins with the excavation, which can be of any size or shape to suit the site and preference of the owner. Being virtually “handmade”, a concrete pool can be square, rectangular, circular, oval, freeform, L-Shaped, or whatever takes your fancy. They can also have varying depths, with deep and shallow ends. After excavating, reinforcing is laid into position to follow the shape of the excavation. This is the same process as in any concrete construction, with the reinforcing providing a rigid frame for the concrete.

Finally the concrete is finished with either pebble, coloured quartz, vinyl, tiles or another finish. Concrete pools provide a permanent and lasting avenue for relaxation at home with friends and family whilst increasing the value of your property.

Vinyl-lined pools Originally used for above ground pools and renovating old pools, advances in vinyl-liner techniques have made this type of construction increasingly popular for use with other pool construction. Vinyl linings can be premanufactured or tailor-made for an individual pool. This means there’s plenty of scope for individuality in size, shape and colour, including patterns. Vinyl liners are ideal for pool renovations. The vinyl membrane is vacuum fitted to the exact shape to provide a smooth, tough, resilient hard wearing lining.

Conclusion Today’s pool manufacturing and construction techniques are all sound and will provide you with a pool offering you many years of fun and enjoyment. The one you choose will depend on your own preferences and circumstances.

POOL LOCATION

Locating THE POOL

Are there trees and shrubs close to the proposed pool area? Overhanging trees, in particular, will shed leaves and insects directly into the pool. Pools can be located in the rear yard, placed on the side, or even the front, in fact, wherever Council permission can be obtained. The main consideration is orientation. Points to consider, and you can use simple observation over a few weeks to find the answers, are: Sun – Does the sun reach the pool and an area intended for sunbathing, or is it obstructed by nearby buildings? Shade – Will there be shady spots to escape the sun when it becomes too hot? Wind – Does the wind blow hard, or swirl in the proposed pool area? Will a windbreak be necessary? Vegetation – Are there trees and shrubs close to the proposed pool area? Will overhanging trees shed leaves and insects directly into the pool. Security – Can the pool be easily seen and supervised, such as from a kitchen window?

Variable Sites SPASA Queensland Pool manufacturers, builders and installers have techniques for installing a pool on just about any site you can imagine. On extreme slopes, for example, concrete piers can be installed to support the far walls of the pool. The end result can be spectacular, with the far wall seeming to float off into space. In other cases, such as sloping ground which has been terraced, an above ground pool can be installed using the terracing as a natural feature. If you have an unusual site, don’t be deterred. Talk to a SPASA Queensland Member. Ask to be shown pools in a similar situation to yours. You’ll find they’ve done it all before and can offer a solution to solving your variable site queries that will please you. 76

How big a pool? More and more pool owners are installing pools to suit their lifestyle requirements rather than just following a fashion. Smaller blocks, for example, will happily accommodate a great “plunge pool”, giving just as much enjoyment as a larger pool. Shapes, too, can be designed to fit smaller or irregular spaces. SPASA Member Pool Contractors in Queensland are leading the field with new trends and can design and provide pools to suit any requirements. As well as space, the other consideration is the amount and type of activity you expect in your pool. If you have children, and encourage them to invite their friends to the pool, you’ll take their needs into account. How many friends and relatives will you be inviting to join you in a swim? Will there be older family members coming over on weekends, or during the week while you’re at work?

How deep? You’ll need at least one meter of water under you for lap swimming so that you don’t touch the bottom when making your turns. One meter is also suitable for the shallow part of the pool. For the deep end, a depth between 1.7 and 1.8 metres is quite satisfactory. Your SPASA Queensland Member can provide you with advice based on their experience in the industry.

Conclusion First, discuss your pool needs with your family to determine the type of pool and facilities you would all enjoy. Then discuss your “wish list” with a SPASA Queensland Member. With so many shapes and sizes to choose from, you’ll find there is a pool to suit your exact needs.

AFTER

Renovating AN OLDER POOL No matter what its type or condition, any pool can be renovated.

BEFORE

W

hatever the reason, there has never been a better time to renovate a pool. For any pool renovation it’s wise to enlist the services of a SPASA Queensland Member who has a good track record in renovation work. They can carry out work from removing the old pool and installing a new one, to removing and replacing tiling, removing and replacing the equipment, adding a spa or water feature and so on. More and more owners are renovating their existing pools as their lifestyle changes, and to correct the effects of normal wear and tear.

Older concrete pools Owners of an existing concrete pool have a number of options when considering renovating. Any pool can be restored to its former glory, or it can be made right “up-todate”. The renovation, in fact, is likely to be better than the original because of the modern materials now available. One option is to remove the existing interior lining and apply aggregate pebble, quartz or glass interior which adheres to the concrete walls for a brand new interior lining, or the pool can be tiled, or have a new fibreglass lining inserted. Another popular choice for renovating a pool is the insertion of a vacuum fitted vinyl lining, again tailor-made to fit the existing pool. All these options are provided by SPASA Queensland Members who will help you make the right choice depending on the condition of your pool and your future requirements. Whichever option you choose, you will end up with a rejuvenated pool which will give you many more years of enjoyment.

78

POOL RENOVATIONS

AFTER

BEFORE

Older fibreglass pools Renovations to older fibreglass pools usually apply to the waterline tiles, copings and surrounds. Basically, there is no limit to the “cosmetic” changes available.

Modern filtration systems Older style filtration systems mean more work for the pool owner so replacing the system means less work and more time for leisure. Modern filtration systems can be successfully installed into most types of older pools. Automatic chlorinators, saltwater chlorinators and other techniques for keeping a pool bacteria free, were not readily available in years gone by, but can generally be installed into any existing pool. When replacing filtration equipment, seek the advice of a SPASA Queensland Member. For example, care must be taken to ensure the existing reticulation system is adequate for the new equipment. It may be necessary to replace the water pipes; otherwise the new filtration equipment will not deliver the increased efficiency you expect. Expert advice is valuable, in fact necessary, when it comes to selecting the type of new filtration to replace the old.

Know your pool One of the advantages of many older pools is that they were over designed. This means the structural integrity is likely to still be there, enabling extensive renovation work to be carried out on the existing shell. The more you know about the history of the pool, the better. Old drawings, the original manufacturer or builder’s name, and so on, all help the renovator when quoting and actually carrying out the work.

No matter what its type or condition, any pool can be renovated. It’s just a question of the style of renovating you prefer and the expertise of your renovator. That’s why obtaining expert advice is stressed so much. Pool renovation can be tricky for the inexperienced, but comparatively easy for the expert. When you decide on which style of renovation you would like, obtain several quotes based on exactly the same type and amount of work to be done. Don’t be afraid to check the credentials of the people you’re talking to, and ask for the names of satisfied customers. Then, don’t hesitate to ring some of the referrals and ask if they were satisfied with the work. For renovations, it pays to deal with a SPASA Queensland Member.

Conclusion The popularity of pool renovations has opened up many opportunities for the owners of older pools. They can be “touched up” or remade into an entirely new shape and size. It all depends on your imagination and the skill and expertise of the renovator. Shop around for ideas and don’t hesitate to seek advice from your SPASA Queensland Member. SPASA Queensland Members might not be the cheapest - but they offer more security and great value for money. Whichever option you choose, you will end up with a rejuvenated pool which will give you many more years of enjoyment. 79

Heating or cooling MY POOL

If you’re thinking of installing a new pool, or renovating an old one, temperature control is something worth thinking about.

M

ost Pools are hardly used – “That’s Crazy” – No Wonder pool heating is so popular! You only have to think of the number of warm, sunny Spring and Autumn days when the pool looks so inviting but the water temperature is suitable only for the hardy! Then there’s the time during the main swim season, when the pool is sparkling but the water still has a bite to it. If you’re thinking of installing a new pool, or renovating an old one, Pool Heating is something worth thinking about. Popular systems you can choose from are Gas, Heat Pumps (electric) and Solar. They can be installed at the time of construction or added later and they are all compatible with most types of filter and reticulation systems. Solar is very popular for heating because the energy to heat the water is free of charge, but, because solar depends on the sun, a practical alternative is to install a combination, such as solar with either a gas or heat pump. The cost of running Pool heaters varies, depending on the type, from zero (apart from pumping costs) for a simple solar heater, to the higher cost of running LP Gas. Heat pumps work like a reverse cycle air conditioner, and are very efficient but a little more expensive to purchase than Gas Systems. What type of equipment will be required will depend on the location, position of the pool and how much extra swim time you would like to enjoy. As Pool Heating Systems can be installed in most existing pools, it’s the ideal renovation option for older pools.

80

Why pools change temperature The majority of the pool’s (In ground Pool) heat loss is from the surface. Temperature change is due to a combination of evaporation, convection and radiation. The majority of heat loss is via evaporation and this is increased in windy conditions. Pool Blankets help a lot in reducing these heat losses.

Keeping the temperature right POOL COVERS The simplest way to conserve the temperature in a pool is to use a pool cover. Pool covers virtually eliminate evaporation and are also very effective in reducing temperature changes due to both convection and radiation. They are supplied by a number of manufacturers and are available from pool shops and pool builders. Some types are attached to storage rollers which keep the cover out of site when the pool is being used.

HEDGES, FENCES AND LANDSCAPING If you can’t avoid installing your pool in a windy spot, there are ways to protect against excessive convection. Hedges, for example, make excellent windbreaks while at the same time forming a part of your landscaping. Another technique is in the fencing you choose. Providing you keep in mind the need for child supervision, you could install one section of solid fence to block the worst of the wind. A retaining wall performs the same handy function.

POSITIONING THE POOL The positioning of the pool is most important from a temperature point of view. Avoid windy spots if possible. Plan to keep the pool away from nearby buildings and overhanging trees. Trees not only cause problems with leaves; they and nearby buildings block the sunlight and prevent the pool warming up naturally during the day.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

GAS AND HEAT PUMPS. Gas and Heat Pumps work much the same way as any other domestic system. They can be switched on and off at will or operated by an automatic timing device included in your existing pool or spa filtration equipment and are all thermostat controlled. The equipment is connected to the pool’s water reticulation system, usually in a separate housing, in the return line after the filter system. This means the water is filtered before being processed so that the equipment is protected from algae and debris. This helps prolong the life of the equipment. The main advantage of Gas and Heat Pumps is that they can be used at any time. That is, unlike solar heaters, they don’t rely on the sun. With a combination of a good quality pool cover and temperature control, it’s possible to swim all year round. Solar is very good in Spring, Summer and Autumn but will not be able to produce desirable temperatures in Winter.

BRISBANE - TYPICAL SWIMMING SEASON WITHOUT Temperature Control 3.5 - 4.5 months WITH Temperature Control (to Heat) 8 - 10 months

CAIRNS - TYPICAL SWIMMING SEASON WITHOUT Temperature Control 7 - 8 months WITH Temperature Control (to Cool) 11 - 12 months

SOLAR HEATING A solar pool heater draws on energy from the sun, making it environmentally friendly and virtually free to run, and is the most popular method of pool heating for a Season Extension. It works by installing a large solar collector, usually on a roof, and pumping pool water through the collector to transfer the heat into the pool water. The system can be controlled with the use of a thermostat or solar pump controller. A correctly designed system will deliver summer type pool temperatures for up to 9 months 82

of the year and even longer with the use of thermal pool water covers. The latest solar automatic control systems include cooling modes which run the system at night to cool the pools down during the peak summer months. Solar pool heating has minimal running costs, it’s simple to maintain and has a very low carbon footprint. Solar heating will satisfy the needs of most domestic pool owners as it will double the use of the pool without large heating bills. The solar collectors vary in material and styles, however they are all designed to do the same task and that is to collect the suns energy and transfer it efficiently into the pool water. The most common system is a strip collector which is a series of small extruded tubes webbed together to form a continuous strip. This product is typically made from PVC, TPR or synthetic EPDM rubber and is easily adapted to fit most roofs. Panel systems are usually made from polypropylene or polyethylene materials and are more modular in roof layout. Most solar collectors are black but the more recent products are offered in dark coloured materials, which are designed to blend with common roof colours. If a colour other than black is used then 10-15% additional collector area should be installed to compensate for its reduced ability to absorb the suns rays Domestic household solar hot water panels and evacuated tube systems can also be used for solar pool heating, however no dramatic increase in efficiency will be experienced in the temperature ranges required for the average pool heating. Glazed Solar panels or evacuated tube panels can produce stagnation temperatures in excess of 150 degress Celcius. This can produce many safety issues and great care should be taken.

SIZE AND AREA The recommended collector size is determined by the swimming pool surface area, as this is the major source of heat loss. Other factors will influence the overall efficiency but they are of secondary importance to the area of the solar collector. Factors that should be considered when sizing the system, in order of priority are: • Solar collector area • Pool shade • Collector colour • Roof orientation

• U se of thermal cover • S hade on solar collector • P revailing winds • R oof type

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

SPASA Queensland recommends a minimum of 70% of the pool surface area (Queensland) for all solar collector designs, however increasing the size of the solar collector is the most economic way of gaining more heat into the pool. The collector area is referred to as the amount of collector to be installed and not the roof area which it is to be installed on; it should always be represented as a percentage of the pool and in total square meters.

LOCATION AND ORIENTATION For best results the ideal orientation for the collector is north to north west, however both west and east roofs can be used with excellent results provided additional collector is used to make up for the orientation short fall. Flat roofs are also a good alternative but again can result in slight loss of performance in the cooler months which can also be made up with additional collector. The overriding rule for all these options is finding a roof with good sunlight for the longest period of the day. Remember that 90% of all the usable heat is collected in the middle 2/3 of the day.

PUMPING REQUIREMENTS Solar Pool heating systems can be run off the existing filtration system pumps, however this can create issues with varying or high filter pressure. Each site should be considered on its merits. The most common and hydraulically safest way is to use an independent system where the pool is constructed with solar flow and return pipe work, i.e. two designated suctions points with approved safety suction grates, at least 1.0 m apart. The flow rate through these suction points should not exceed the latest ASA rulings to prevent the chance of suction entrapment. At least one solar return point should be installed and care should be taken to position the solar suctions and outlets in the pool wall such that the flow of water does not work against the skimming action of the filtration water flow. The other option for pools constructed without solar provision, is the simultaneous running of a solar boost pump with the filter pump. The booster pump diverts some of the filtered water thought the solar collector and returns it back into the existing pool return outlets. In this case both the filtration system and solar pump work simultaneously to flow water through the solar collector. For both options correct flow rates through the collector are imperative to achieve good results and the solar pump must be sized with the following in mind: • Collector area • Pipe Size • Length of pipe run to the collector • Vertical lift to the collector Pump selection should be based around a higher head / low flow rate than traditional filtration pumps which tend to be lower head and higher flow rates. The use of variable speed pumps is not recommended for solar pool heating as they are designed for filtration duty and do not deliver savings when running at the constant high speeds required to lift water up to roof heights. Balancing valves should be installed to control the flow and pressure through the collector.

HANDOVER AND COMMISSIONING A formal handover and commissioning of a solar pool heating system should be carried out by the installation company, a full explanation of the workings of the product and setting should be explained with a full warranty pointing out conditions and servicing requirements for both the owner and the installation company, if a service schedule is in place to comply to the warranty, understand the timing and conditions.

ENSURE THE PRODUCT HANDOVER AND COMMISSIONING REPORT STATES • Installation dates • Correct addresses and contact details • Collector area and products used, this should match the quote/ sales order • All warranties, understand what product is covered by the installation company and by other suppliers/manufacturers. As the installation of solar pool heating in Queensland is regarded as “Building Work”, ensure that your proposed Contractor is appropriately licensed by the Queensland Building Services Authority to perform this class of work. Licenses can be checked at www.bsa.qld.gov.au

Installing a pressure gauge at the collector is recommended to ensure the collector doesn’t exceed the manufacturer’s recommended working pressure.

Also, due to the nature of the work, Workplace Health and Safety “risk assessments” are required prior to the installation of solar pool heating; this should be readily available by the installation company.

SOLAR CONTROLLERS

Conclusion

As nobody can guarantee at what time of day the sun will shine, time clocks are of little use in controlling solar pool heating systems. What is needed is a temperature sensing control device which enables the pool owner to set and maintain the desired pool temperature. These units will operate the solar pump only when heat can be gained into the pool. Modern solar controllers have many extra features which monitor the systems functions and wherever possible conserve electricity.

The advantage of temperature control is the extended swimming season. Gas, Heat Pumps and Solar are all proven Pool Heating systems. The one you choose will depend on your location and how much you plan to use the pool. You can install it at the same time as the pool is built, or later on. Your SPASA Queensland Member can advise you, so don’t hesitate to ask. 83

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping

TO MAKE YOUR POOL THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN

I

n many cases, what makes the pools shown in this magazine look so enticing are the surrounds. A pool sparkles even more brightly within a well planned garden setting.

But, it’s not just the good looks that clever landscaping provides. To enjoy your pool to the full, you should plan for a paved entertainment area and shelter from the sun. The best time to start thinking landscaping is when you first think of installing a pool. The two go hand in hand and your choice, naturally, will depend on your personal taste and the way you would like your pool to be used. The first consideration is how much space you have in the area around the pool. This will determine the size of the paved area, the type of trees and shrubs and whether or not you can fit in a gazebo or other shaded supervision structure. There are several ways to spread the cost. You can, for example, leave plantings until later, or start by planting small trees and shrubs instead of advanced specimens. A gazebo or pergola can also be installed later or at the same time as the pool. There are some things, however, which should be planned for and done at the time of installation. If you wish to delay the paving, get the necessary concreting while the concreters are there. It won’t cost much extra, but will be cheaper than if you have to have the concreters back at a later date. When planning the landscaping, take into account the amount of space to leave for other purposes, such as a barbecue, tool shed, compost heap, garbage bin area, clothes line, and so on. The space that’s left is yours to plan. Tree plantings should be three metres away from the pool water. If you decide on a salt water chlorinator, some plants are allergic to salt, and, because you want to keep maintenance to a minimum, you want to avoid leaves and flower petals getting into the pool as much as possible.

86

Clever landscaping will make your pool more enjoyable to use as well as forming part of the increased value to your home.

Another trap to avoid is planting trees and high growing shrubs on the north side where they will create too many shadows, especially at the beginning and end of the season when you want as much sun as possible on the pool. The only time to break this rule, particularly in the case of hedge-type shrubs, is when you need privacy or a wind break. Some pools are landscaped with little or no planting nearby, relying on broad areas of imaginative paving to create stunning effects. Be sure, however, to have a shady area nearby as in midsummer the paving around these pools can become quite hot. An advantage of this type of landscaping is the lack of work required, giving the pool owner more time to enjoy the pool itself. For a “natural” look, many pool owners install rocks of varying sizes to enhance the landscaping. The “natural” theme can be taken a stage further with a permanent pebble “beach” which allows you to walk in and out of the water just as you would at the beach. The creative use of rocks, waterfalls, ceramic pieces, columns, terracotta vases and other decorative objects can be used to create any number of exotic landscaping themes. When it comes to paving, there are literally hundreds of choices, ranging from tiles to timber. The only consideration is that the material you choose should be naturally waterproof or can be made waterproof and non-slip.

Conclusion Before you start, look at all the photographs in this magazine for ideas. Then, add your own individual touch. Discuss your ideas with your SPASA Queensland contractor, who can help either with advice or referral, or in some cases, offer a full landscaping service from design to installation and plantings.

WATER BALANCE EXPLAINED

Water Balance WHAT IS IT?

pH pH is a measure of the acid and alkaline levels in the pool water. pH which is too low, or acidic, can irritate swimmers’ skin and corrode the pool’s surface and equipment. pH which is too high can cause scale damage to pool equipment and surfaces. Total Alkalinity Total alkalinity measures the amount of alkaline minerals in the water. These minerals act as a buffer for pH and are responsible for reducing the impact of acidic water on the pH. Total alkalinity helps to keep pH levels within the proper range. If the total alkalinity is too high, there’s a risk of scale forming on the pool surfaces or in the equipment. If there’s too little total alkalinity, the water tends to corrode pool surfaces. If the total alkalinity is not in the proper range, your sanitiser will not operate with maximum efficiency.

Mineral Based sanitising systems also use electrolysing technology delivering an alternative to sodium or salt only based systems. The mineral blends are typically based on Magnesium and Potassium.

Calcium Hardness Calcium hardness is a measure of the dissolved

Automatic Chemical Controllers Pool control equipment is

calcium in water. Pool water low in calcium levels will take it from the pool surface of equipment, causing erosion.

available which will measure the levels of chlorine and pH of pool water and add both liquid chlorine and pool acid as necessary adjustments every few minutes to maintain the levels set by the pool owner. When the chlorine levels are kept constantly correct, the need for super - chlorination is greatly reduced. With the correct total alkalinity, the pH is kept more stable.

Water that is high in calcium may deposit it on the pool surface or in the equipment in the form of scale. As with pH and total alkalinity, calcium hardness levels vary from pool to pool depending on the source or the water and the chemicals being used.

Stabiliser Your pool also needs to be stabilised to counter the loss of chlorine and liquid chlorine due to the effects of the sun’s ultraviolet light. Stabilising the water saves you money through the saving in chlorine usage, and helps maintain more consistent sanitiser levels. Sanitising with Chlorine Chlorine is one of the most effective known chemical treatments for the sanitisation of large volumes of water. This makes it one of the most popular treatments for the sanitisation of swimming pools and spas in Australia, indeed the world. Even “salt water pools” make use of chlorine produced in a different way. Chlorine, when dissolved in water and maintained to the appropriate level, kills and controls bacteria and other micro organisms.

Super Chlorination Otherwise known as “shocking” or oxidising, super-chlorination is a periodic treatment required to ensure pool water is sparkling clear. Swimmer wastes such as perspiration, body oils, urine, cosmetics, sun lotions and other wastes from the atmosphere build up over time and cause cloudy and dull water. Periodic super - chlorination, usually every two weeks with a pool oxidiser, will rid the pool of chloramines and return it to a bright, sparkling body of water, free from wastes. 88

Saltwater Chlorinators Saltwater chlorinators have become one of the most popular methods of sanitising a pool in Queensland. The strange thing is, it’s not the salt that destroys bacteria and algae. They breed just as fast and effectively in salt water as they do in fresh. Saltwater chlorinators fight the bacteria in a pool through the production of chlorine in the form of Sodium Hyperchloride. This is done by electrolysis - when the salted water passes through the salt chlorinator containing a low voltage electrolytic cell. At this point, chlorine is formed which is then added to the water in the pool to kill bacteria.

Ozone Ozone for pools and spas is produced by means of special ultraviolet cells enclosed in a housing. The converter is connected to the water reticulation system and as the water passes through the converter, it is oxidised. Ozone can be used to control swimmer wastes common to pools and spas, such as body oils, cosmetics, suntan lotions and perspiration. When an ozone converter is used, the amount of chlorine or bromine required to keep the water free from wastes is reduced. Bromine Another sanitiser, bromine works in a similar way to chlorine. Bromine is available in tablet form and when dissolved in water produces a compound that is an effective sanitiser. Periodic super-chlorination is still required to rid the pool or spa of wastes. Bromine also has a high tolerance to hot water, making it popular for use in spas. Conclusion The path to a sparkling clean, balanced and healthy pool is to follow a regular maintenance programme. By using recommended pool grade chemicals and following the professional analysis and advice of your SPASA Qld Pool Specialist, you will obtain maximum enjoyment from your pool or spa with a minimum of fuss.

Maintaining YOUR POOL

A SPASA Qld Pool Shop or Service Technician offers water balance and testing for your type of pool

Y

our swimming pool is a great source of fun for the family and friends, so it’s important to take good care of it. Pool water care is not a difficult or time consuming activity.

Water maintenance requires the regular balancing of the water to ensure it is comfortable to swim in, and your pool surface and equipment is protected. Controlling bacteria and algae and removing swimmer wastes will keep your pool safe to swim in and the water sparkling clear. Filtering the water regularly keeps it free of debris as well as circulating the pool chemicals. Through a balance of pool chemicals, filtration and circulation, your pool can be maintained with a minimum of fuss.

Why do we need pool chemicals? Being a large, open body of water, a pool naturally attracts unwelcome “drop-ins” which include leaves, flowers, insects, dust and hair, skin and sun lotions, etc left behind by bathers. These particles can cause the water to cloud and encourage bacteria and algae growth. If left untreated, bacteria and algae form growths which are both unsightly and a health hazard. The only way to keep pollutants under control, and to maintain adequate sanitiser and oxidiser levels in the water, is to run the filter on a regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer. Pool chemicals are also used to maintain the right mineral balance for the pool water. Out of balance water is uncomfortable for swimmers, can cause expensive damage to the pool and equipment and will also inhibit the efficiency of your pool sanitiser. SPASA Queensland Pool Shop and Service Technicians offer water balance testing and advice for your type of pool, so you don’t have to worry about becoming a backyard chemist! They can also recommend other appropriate pool products to keep your pool water clear and safe. 89

Automatic POOL CLEANERS

W

ith modern pool cleaners being mostly automatic, all that’s left for the pool owner to do is to scoop the pool to collect floating leaves, insects and other debris that falls or is blown into the pool. For this job you use a long handled scoop net. Very few pool owners these days vacuum their pools by hand - there’s a range of automatic pool cleaning systems available that do the work for you. Pool cleaners can be of the suction type, robotic, in-floor or pressure cleaner type. The in-floor and pressure cleaner types are inbuilt, while suction and robotic pool cleaners can be obtained from accredited pool shops where you will receive advice on the best type for you.

Suction cleaners Suction type pool cleaners are attached to the skimmer box and driven by the suction power of the filtration pump. This means, generally, that no extra pump is required. The cleaner sucks up dirt and debris similar to a household vacuum cleaner and deposits it via a hose into the skimmer box. Larger material such as leaves, the bigger insects and flower petals are trapped in the basket inside the skimmer. The small particles travel to the filter.

Robotic cleaners Robotic cleaners run independently from the existing filtration. Because of this they require an electrical power supply. Typically they run on low voltage power similar to pool lights. These appliances filter and strain the debris into on board receptacles. These appliances are fast and effective in almost any pool type from simple to challenging. 90

Pool cleaning appliances and systems fit into four categories. They are suction driven, pressure driven, in-floor and robotic. In-Floor cleaning systems In-floor cleaners are an automatic agitator type of cleaner. Recessed jets in the bottom of the pool pop up automatically according to settings on a timer and release a strong flow of water into the pool. This forces the debris towards the skimmer box where it is drawn off and filtered by the skimmer box filter, then on to the filter system.

Pressure cleaners Most pressure cleaners require the use of an additional pump and use the pressure provided to both propel the unit and provide a ‘venturi’ effect which draws leaves and other pool debris into an onboard container equipped with a net bag. Pressure type cleaners are particularly effective in removing leaves and other large debris.

Conclusion The in-floor and pressure type pool cleaners are the only ones built-in at the time of pool construction, so you’ll need to talk to your SPASA Queensland Member for advice. The others are additional accessories and, as mentioned earlier, you can shop around for the type that suits you. Many SPASA Queensland Member pool shops will demonstrate a pool cleaner in your own pool. This gives you the opportunity to compare the various types before you make a decision.

ECO POOL SELF-SUFFICIENT SWIMMING POOL

S

PASA Queensland has introduced an Accreditation program that encourages and acknowledges those current Pool Owners and prospective Pool Buyers as responsible citizens in Queensland that want to enjoy (or, continue to enjoy), the domestic lifestyle that goes with having a Swimming Pool – whilst being completely neutral to the town water system. By embracing the concepts of the Queensland Water Commission (Harvest, Store and Use “Other Water”), and then taking them a step further, SPASA Members in Queensland have developed and tested New Pool Construction methods to ensure that the water required during construction for the “initial fill” of the pool and the subsequent “top ups” required are neutral to the town water supply. SPASA Queensland Members and their Customers could save around 400,000,000 litres of drinking water in South East Queensland a year (just in new pool construction alone). As a bonus, not only can a Home Owner have a “Self sufficient” Swimming Pool, but they can also have a surplus of non-potable water to wash the car (or boat, or the dog), and then, water the garden. A ‘SPASA Accredited EcoPool’ plaque will be issued to each Swimming Pool Owner (new or old) that complies with the Water Saving and Water Consumption factors identified by the SPASA Queensland assessor – so everyone is aware that a “Self-Sufficient Swimming Pool” is on the premises. Using Post Construction techniques, older Pools can also be retro-fitted with water saving devices, and also become self sufficient. 91

ALL ABOUT SPAS

All about SPAS

A spa is healthy, relaxing and just plain fun.

V

irtually anyone enjoys a spa. They are great for family entertainment when parents and children can share the enjoyment. Busy people find a spa the ideal way to relax after a day spent on the go, letting the soothing warmed jets wash away the tension. As more and more Australians begin to recognise the soothing and therapeutic value of spas, so has their popularity increased. Spas are available to suit an endless variety of requirements. They can be outdoor as part of the pool system, or a separate entity either outdoors or indoors. This gives the spa owner a wide range of choice in selecting from the many types offered by manufacturers. The size of a spa can vary from one large enough to accommodate up to twelve people, right down to the individual spa bath for one. It depends on how you intend to use your spa, the space you have available and, of course, your budget.

Enormous range A spa can be tailor-made, that is, built on site from concrete or other masonry products to any size or shape, or bought ‘off the shelf’ in a pre-moulded shell of fibreglass or acrylic. Because of their popularity, manufacturers have produced an almost bewildering range of pre-moulded spas to choose from. They vary not only in size, but shape, position of the jets, colours, patterns and designs. Some are so colourful, they’re a fashion item. 92

When looking at spa designs and shapes, keep in mind your particular use. There will be variations in the seating provisions, for example, which will have a bearing on comfort levels for children and older people. Make sure the spa is easy to get into and out of for those who will be using it. Some have one entry step, others as many as three, which can be particularly suited to the elderly and partially disabled. There are also spas with provision for the installation of grab rails to make it easy to get in and out.

For added luxury A hot spa won’t cure your arthritis, but it can sure make you feel a lot better. Hydrotherapy has long been recognised as the ideal treatment for the tired muscles in athletes and for alleviating a number of physical disorders including arthritis. Spas are especially suited to young children who find the sheer size of a pool intimidating. They will often be quite happy to enter a spa where the size is more to their liking and so begin a lifelong love of the water.

Conclusion A spa is healthy, relaxing and just plain fun. Because the water is heated, a spa can be enjoyed all year round, even when placed outdoors. From the many types available, there will be one to suit you. Selecting the right one is a matter of shopping around and deciding between the many sizes, shapes and colours available.

POOL DESIGN

Plan Now

FOR MORE PLEASURE LATER Children and older people will need steps they can negotiate safely and confidently.

Steps and swim outs Before you decide on your steps and swimouts, think of the people who will be using your pool. Most modern in-ground pools no longer feature the steep vertical steps and hand rails of yesteryear. They’ve largely disappeared because they tend to break up the clean lines of modern pool design and are not easy for small children to negotiate. In their place is a combination of wide steps at the shallow end and a “swimout” at the deep end. They enable bathers to exit the pool comfortably and safely. Children and older people will need steps they can negotiate safely and confidently. The bottom step, for example, should be easily accessible from the bottom of the pool and the remaining steps not too steep. A “swimout” is a ledge placed just below water level at the deeper end of the pool. It provides a resting place for swimmers and is used to hop out of the pool in comfort. Permanent “beaches” are becoming popular. The bottom of the pool slopes gently away, forming an attractive tactile wade-in, wade-out entry and exit point.

“Granny seat” or “Giggle seat” Not only for grannies, this innovative idea is simply an extra smaller step set next to the main steps just below water level. As well as providing a convenient step for the elderly to enter and exit the pool, it’s one of the nicest places to sit and let the water lap your lower legs.

Safety in play If you plan on playing lots of water sports, or providing entertainment for young children, give special consideration to your pool depths.

L-Shaped pools, for example, offer excellent opportunities for a special “kids” area. The short end of the L can be shallow without interfering with the depths of the main pool.

Pool furniture & shade Any outdoor furniture can be used as pool furniture. It can be of timber, wrought iron, plastic, canvas on a waterproof frame, bamboo that’s been waterproofed, or metal such as tubular aluminium. The main consideration should be comfort. Don’t forget you will be spending many hours in pool side chairs, usually in nothing but your swimsuit and for this reason you should consider either padded chairs of cushions - under shade. Because you, and your guests, may want to regularly change positions to follow either the sun or the shade, pool furniture should be sturdy, yet portable. Have at least a few chairs or lounges that can be shifted by one person from one part of the pool to another.

Machinery housing The pump, filter and other equipment can be housed in a suitable weatherproof structure. It can be soundproofed, lockable for safety, and accessible for maintenance. However, as the box required will need to be fairly large, plan to have it placed in a position where it will not cause an obstruction or interfere with the look of your pool and landscaping.

Conclusion It’s the little extra touches that add to the fun and enjoyment of a pool and with so many variations of pool design and accessories, it’s worth planning well in advance. Talk to your friends who already have a pool and pick the best of the ideas to suit you and your family. 93

The Pump

W

hen designing your pool and equipment layout, consider the placement of the various pieces of equipment.

Typically the plant room needed to house a pump, filter and chlorinating system for an average domestic pool starts at around a cubic metre. It needs to be flat and preferably just above the operating level. If installed below water level then usually more space is required to facilitate valves that can shut the water off in order to effect maintenance.

Pump - which one? Choose a pump that is powerful enough – but not too powerful. Overpowering the system can cause serious pressure problems with filtration and plumbing that is only designed to handle a specific flow rate.

Variable Speed Pool Pumps Variable speed simply means a pool pump that is capable of moving water at more than one speed. Studies show that the latest variable speed pool pumps can save energy costs up to 90% over the old single speed, which is useful, as we are all concerned about saving energy.

Alternative Electricity Seriously consider the other Tariffs and the savings that can be made with “off-peak” supply Choose your Pump on its “Flow Rate” (not its horsepower) as it must be compatible with the flow rate of the associated filter, plumbing and other accessories. It is generally adequate if your pump can turnover your pool water volume in around 6 hours. Most filtration systems need to run this long to allow salt water chlorinators to properly sanitise the pool. Consider a second smaller pump for the additional waterfeatures, heating etc.

Consider your neighbours In Queensland, the noise from pool / spa / pumping / filtration equipment can be considered excessive under the Environmental Protection Policy for Noise (1997), so locate this equipment as far as possible from adjoining occupied buildings. Show consideration to your neighbours by keeping pool noise at an acceptable level (including barking dogs, radios, shouting, bug zappers, etc) and limit pool use to reasonable hours.

Electrical equipment Bare skin, minimum clothing and water combine to lower the human body’s electrical resistance. Therefore, the effects of an electrical shock to a person in or near a swimming pool are likely to be more serious than in other circumstances. Even small voltage in the water may cause drowning due to loss of muscular control. For your safety, the electrical installations associated with swimming pools, (including the filtration, pump, chlorination, heating, lighting and power outlets) must be installed correctly, and maintained by a qualified electrician. Lights should be placed, directed or shaded to stop direct or reflective glare shining onto adjacent land. No lights or wiring should be located so that they could fall into the water. A council may specify the hours within which pool lighting may be used. Underground electrical installations, including the electrical conductor attached to metallic reinforcing of the pool structure, should be clearly marked on the pool or recorded for future reference.

Filter Facts

WHICH FILTER IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Once you’ve chosen the type of pool, the next big decision is the type of filter.

T

he job of the filter itself is to remove the remaining dirt, debris, oils, skin, hair and organisms not trapped by the skimmer box, which range from the very small to microscopic.

Australian filters are among the best in the world and many of the leading manufacturers and distributors are Members of SPASA Queensland, which is another assurance of quality and performance.

Three types There are basically three types of filters from which to choose: 1. Sand 2. D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) 3. Cartridge All three are recognised as being effective in home pools and whichever you choose is likely to give you satisfaction for a long period of time. When the pump is switched on, water is drawn through the skimmer box on its way to the filter. The skimmer box is a box set into a cavity at pool 96

side with one end open to the pool at surface level and contains a skimmer basket which traps larger particles such as leaves, the bigger bugs and insects, flower petals and other debris. The skimmer basket can be cleaned simply by removing the cover and emptying the basket. The job of the filter itself is to remove the remaining dirt, debris, oils, skin, hair and organisms not trapped by the skimmer box. These will range from the very small to the microscopic.

Sand filters Sand is a natural filter, a characteristic taken advantage of in pool filtering systems. Their simplicity and low maintenance make sand filters one of the most popular. Modern ‘Hi-Rate’ sand filters work on a very simple principle. Special silica sand or other filtration media is packed into a filter tank, pool water is drawn from the surface of the skimmer box and pumped through the filter media. As the water is pumped through the media bed, the particles are filtered out.

POOL FILTER FACTS

At the bottom of the filter tank is the under drain system which collects the filtered water for return to the pool. After a time, dirt and debris trapped by the media build up, causing the media to ‘clog up’, restricting the water flow and building up pressure. This is normal and easily remedied by the process called ‘backwashing’. Most filters have a pressure gauge which tells you at a glance when backwashing is necessary. Backwashing a sand filter is simple. You just switch off the pump and rotate the backwash handle to the backwash setting and switch the pump back on for two to three minutes, followed by a rinse cycle of about half a minute.

along the pipe to the filter where it is forced onto the material. Here it forms a ‘cake’, called the D.E. layer, which does the work of trapping the finer debris from the water. When the filter has trapped a certain amount of debris, the water flow becomes restricted and registers on a gauge. This indicates the need for backwashing. In backwashing the powder is discarded and a fresh charge of D.E is added to the filter.

Cartridge filters Cartridge filters are gaining in popularity, as they are simple and compact, an advantage where space is restricted.

You can tell when the water is clean by watching it come out of the waste backwash line. Modern filters have a sight glass next to the filter which you can watch without moving away from the filter.

There are two types of cartridge filters, vacuum and pressure. The vacuum type is located on the suction side of the water pump and the pressure type on the return, or pressure side of the pump.

Sand filters will filter pool water to a satisfactory level, which is acceptable to most pool owners. Their ease of use, and the fact that the media needs replacing only every three to five years, makes sand filters one of the most popular.

A major advantage of the cartridge type is that they do not need backwashing. This makes them ideal for use with a spa pool as well, and for use in unsewered and other areas where backwashing is difficult. They are also suitable in limited water supply areas where the loss of water due to backwashing would present a problem.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) This peculiar sounding substance is actually fossil, similar to coral, formed from organisms which lived millions of years ago. It occurs in large deposits from which it is mined, and then crushed into tiny particles. Each particle has a skeletal structure which makes it an efficient filter. Similar to a sand filter, it is placed on the pressure side of the pump. The filter housing contains a number of grids, or pads, covered with fine material such as Dacron or polypropylene. This material has some filtering capability, but is really there to hold the D.E. D.E. powder is mixed into a bucket of clean water to form a slurry and then fed into the skimmer box with the pump turned on. The D.E. then travels

Renovating a pool Any of the filter types discussed in this article are suitable for pool renovations. Keep in mind, however, that modern filters may require more water pressure than some of the older models. Check with your SPASA Member to ensure that your reticulation system is adequate for your new filter system.

Conclusion Before deciding on the filter for your pool, seek the advice of a SPASA Queensland Member. Ultimately, your choice will depend on your particular requirements, environment and preference. With the high standard of filters available in Australia today, whichever filter you choose will serve you well. 97

Poor Pool Fencing

CAN COST YOU DEARLY What causes drownings in swimming pools?

Is having my pool fenced enough?

The most common causes of child drowning in residential swimming pools are:

No, you must also:

• inadequate adult supervision • inadequate fencing or no fencing • lack of gate security • lack of effective water safety skills • lack of resuscitation (CPR) skills

• be with and supervise any pool user

What can I do to prevent drownings? The Queensland State Government has strengthened pool fencing laws to help prevent tragedies in residential swimming pools. Under the new laws, pool owners must: • ensure that a compliant fence is in place and maintained • ensure new pools constructed on a building, such as on a deck or roof, are fenced, • display a sign that details the procedures for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation • (CPR) near residential swimming pools, and • ensure that fences are inspected and deemed “safe” on the sale or lease of a property

• maintain your pool fence and gate latches. Ensure the gate is always closed and the latch closes automatically and cannot get caught and stay open. Do not tie back your gate or obstruct the latch from closing automatically. • regularly check your fence for damage and ensure objects near the fence (such as trees, etc) do not allow a child to climb over the fence.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO ... You can take further action to prevent drowning by: • constantly supervising children at all times when near swimming pools • teaching children to swim, and • learning CPR and First Aid skills. Why do I need to constantly supervise my child in the pool? Many drownings occur in the few seconds that parents are distracted. Constant supervision means your child is being continually watched by you, or a responsible carer. Regardless of what you are doing, always keep watch when children are in, or around, a swimming pool. Never, under any circumstances leave them alone in the pool area.

Why should I learn First Aid and CPR techniques?
