Talking change and challenge Glenn Maxton of Laguna Pools Kathryn Barres sat down with Glenn Maxton in Laguna Pools’ award-wining showroom to discuss his take on the current climate of the pool and spa industry in Australia.
How did you get into the pool and spa industry and when was that exactly?
What are some of the highlights from your time in the industry so far?
I started in the pool and spa industry in late 2003. I was 22 years old and not happy with the culture and environment in my role as Junior Foreman at a Melbourne car dealership. I just couldn’t see myself doing that for the rest of my life. I had no idea what I was going to do, but I did know that I didn’t want to keep doing that! It was one of those times that change felt necessary and I knew a change would be good for me.
Winning SPASAVIC’s Pool of the Year was definitely a highlight. However, we are equally proud of winning ‘Best Innovative Pool or Spa’ award the year before.
SPASAVICTORIA
Growing up in Ocean Grove, I lived next door to a pool builder. I remember watching the build of a huge pool in his backyard and I guess that always interested me and looked like a fun job to have!
4
Coming into November, at that time, I fancied the idea of working outdoors for Summer. I began calling around pool building companies, beginning with Brighton Pools, then Pacesetter Pools. They referred me to one of their contractors, who gave me a job!. I think my skills and mechanical aptitude as a motor mechanic stood me in good stead, and transferred well to pool building. I learned all the plumbing and solar and that got me my start.
Innovation is what excites me and it’s what we value strongly at Laguna Pools. I think it is the cumulative effect of constantly changing and always evolving. That’s what I love, and that’s where personal growth comes from. Most people don’t like change, so we’ve developed a culture that really embraces it.
What have been some of the challenges you’ve faced over the years? I am a problem-solver at heart and I do love a challenge! The challenge of building a business, regardless of the industry, is a difficult task and the biggest challenge is finding the right people. As a business owner I need to be constantly assessing our business’s needs.
Highly Commended Award Winner 2018 - Best Pool Display Centre
What is Laguna Pools currently doing in terms of innovation?
I think that most people keep their companies at the size that is comfortable for them and stick to what they know. I think that avoiding challenges can really slow down evolution. Bringing in new team members, whilst at times can be challenging, can also enrich and progress a business in a really positive way.
We can’t give away all our secrets but we are really proud of the new quoting software we have developed. With a couple of key pieces of input data, anyone in the business can turn around a detailed and accurate quote in a matter of minutes. This has hugely increased productivity within the sales team.
I do believe the pool and spa industry is, at times, stuck in its ways. So I have looked for inspiration from other professionals, businesses and industries. With this inspiration, Laguna Pools has stepped ahead and created a culture that demands high performance, along with good health and well-being.
What have you seen change in consumer demand over the years? The client of a high-end construction business puts good architecture at the top of their list. Our consumers demand that WOW factor for their swimming pool - they want an architectural feature. It’s no longer just a pool in the backyard, it has become a sculptural piece for generations to appreciate. Another change in demand has been the desire for high-end systems and automation. Our clients want to optimise their time at home to be with their family, not to be maintaining their pools. They now really see the value of extra up-front costs in these systems and automation which allow them a better lifestyle. We never started out as a high-end pool builder. We set out to be the best we could be and we started small. We aspired to be high-end but that can only happen incrementally. You can’t be a boutique pool builder just by saying you are one. You have to prove yourself and we have done that.
Laguna Pools focuses on innovation across many areas of the business. We’ve got sound guidelines in place that ensure all our employees share our core values. All our staff are supported to develop a strong sense of holistic well-being. Ultimately, this is what supports us all to get our work done and do a good job. It’s not just about putting in huge hours, or about being fit outside of work. A company that prioritises health, performance and the well-being of their staff will always be a successful one.
How has Laguna Pools pivoted to meet recent government regulations? Laguna Pools aims to always be agile and pivot when necessary. I don’t think the new regulations have really affected us. The Government has made decisions that have caused a few industry issues, but at the end of the day, the consumer pays for the changes. So unfortunately, new regulations really only drive the costs up.
Where do you see the industry heading? I think the industry, with added future regulations, will require more and more administrative work. This may challenge smaller businesses, but with 17 staff at Laguna Pools we have a strong admin team so I think we are well placed to manage this. I also believe that remote monitoring of pools will also see some really exciting progress for the industry over the next few years.
Team turquoise - where did that term come from? We talk internally about ‘Oozing Turquoise’, the colour within our logo. This is one of our core values and how we celebrate our diversity. Laguna Pools staff feel that they can be themselves and be individuals. It’s not just one-size-fits-all. This is what makes our workplace unique and such a fun and creative space to work in. I believe employees shine because they have the support and encouragement to be themselves.
“We all need to embrace change. By keeping the bar high, constantly changing and challenging each other, it is better for the consumer and ultimately this benefits the industry.”
Do you think owning a pool is still a great Australian dream? Absolutely it is.
Is there anything you would like to convey to the Victorian pool and spa industry? I think everyone in our industry needs to keep challenging themselves. We all need to embrace change and evolve. By keeping the bar high, constantly changing and challenging each other, it is better for the consumer and ultimately this benefits the industry. So keep challenging yourself – that’s when the magic happens!

Victorian Government extends pool & spa registration deadline to 1 November 2020 The Victorian Government is extending the deadline for the mandatory registration of private pools and spas due to the impacts of coronavirus.
Once registration is complete, the council will inform the pool owner of the date by which they must organise their first inspection and certification of their barrier.
Private pool and spa owners now have until 1 November 2020 to register with their local council – an extension of five months from the original 1 June deadline.
The deadline for owners to lodge their first barrier certification has also been extended. (See chart below).
The new deadline is an acknowledgement of the extra pressure on families and the increased workload on councils due to the pandemic. Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne says, “We know many people are doing it tough and this gives owners and councils more time to comply with the new regulations ahead of next summer. Pool and spa ownership is a choice and with that choice comes the responsibility of making sure they are safe.” The Government introduced new regulations in December last year to make swimming pools and spas safer and prevent young children from drowning. These changes require owners to register their pools and spas with their local council for a one-off fee of up to $79.
In addition, owners must have a registered building surveyor or inspector certify the continuing compliance of their safety barrier every four years. Owners who fail to register their pool or spa with their local council by 1 November 2020 may face an on-the-spot fine of $330.
- Minister for Planning, Richard Wynne
Deadlines for inspection and lodgement of certificate of barrier compliance Pools and spas constructed before 1 November 2020 Pool/spa construction date:
Compliance certificate must be lodged by:
On or before 30 June 1994
1 November 2021
From 1 July 1994 until 30 April 2010
1 November 2022
From 1 May 2010 until 30 October 2020
1 November 2023
You are required to lodge a certificate of barrier compliance every 4 years. Check with your council for exact dates. Pools and spas constructed on or after 1 November 2020 Your first certificate of barrier compliance will be due within 30 days of occupancy permit or certificate of final inspection. This certificate must accompany your application for registration. Your next certificate of compliance is due 4 years after registration. Check with your council for exact dates.

Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Victoria (SPASAVIC) CEO, Chris Samartzis, says, “With the current Covid-19 environment causing people duress, extending the timelines for people to have their pools and spas registered is a welcomed response. We urge all pool and spa owners to register with their local councils by the 1st of November. It is a simple process that will provide a safe environment to enjoy the backyard pool or spa.”
“We know many people are doing it tough and this gives owners and councils more time to comply with the new regulations ahead of next summer. Pool and spa ownership is a choice and with that choice comes the responsibility of making sure they are safe.”

Waterco’s Head Office, Sydney
Sustainability is in our DNA
Scott Sutherland, VIC Manager - Waterco How’s business Scott? Our business, like many, has been COVID19 affected. We’ve seen about a 10 - 15% reduction. As a wholesaler, we’re generally as busy as other members at any given point in time. The second COVID-19 wave coming in Victoria could signal tougher times ahead but we are ready to face it with the members. The last recession we had really benefitted our industry as people stayed home and wanted to spend money on their own backyards.
SPASAVICTORIA
From humble beginnings as a small PVC pipe and fittings importer to the water treatment and swimming pool equipment manufacturing giant of today, Waterco has gone from strength to strength in just under 40 years.
8
Could you give me a brief history of Waterco and how it has become the water treatment and swimming pool equipment manufacturing giant of today? Soon Sinn Goh started the business in 1981, almost 40 years ago. Back then it was Dronaco, his first operation importing PVC pipe & fittings to supply to plumbers and builders. He grew this business once he noticed an opening in the market when he opened his first Swimart franchise, which has now grown into 70 stores across Australia and NZ.
In 1986, Zane solar was introduced to the market to service pool heating, then in 1989, Waterco became listed on the ASX, so we’re very proud to be one of the few remaining Australian businesses still around and enjoying such longevity within our industry, particularly as a manufacturer. We’ve got manufacturing warehouses in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, the U.K, Canada and U.S.A. and have distribution warehouses in all states of Australia and New Zealand. In 2003, Waterco acquired Lacron, a fibreglass pump and filter manufacturing company in Britain. Then in 2005, from the US we acquired Focus-Temp electro-heat heat pumps and also in the same year, Baker Hydro, a filtration manufacturer.
When did you enter the pool and spa industry and what changes have you seen over the years? I came into the pool and spa industry in late 2009 from the hardware industry selling paint brushes and accessories. I saw an ad on SEEK.com and applied for the job at Waterco. It was a big change but it was what I needed, as I’d been in the hardware game for 20 years.
I was very fortunate when I started at Waterco as the Waterco Multi-cyclone product had just come onto the market. It’s an award-winning pre-filter which revolutionised our industry as a water-saving concept. It saves a lot of water and means that filter backwashing is reduced. You don’t have to clean the elements in your cartridge filter for up to 12 months. This was the decade that the concept of water saving and energy saving originated. There has also been a massive change from single speed pumps to variable speed pumps reducing electricity costs. Automation from your phone has also been a massive change. Climate Care certification has been a huge focus for Waterco due to consumer demand for environmental responsibility and sustainability. The Waterco Multicyclone, 50mm Micron media filters, Waterco Glass Pearl media and 50mm sweep elbows are all Climate Care Certified, and just recently the first environmentally friendly, Climate Care Certified, residential pool chlorinator the Waterco Electrochlor chlorinator has been added, to make pools smarter and more energy efficient. This makes Waterco the first manufacturer to supply a full package of pool equipment that has achieved certification. So, what we say about our products and what is on our brochures regarding flow rates is validated. We see this as our real point of difference.
What have been the biggest challenges as a supplier? Due to COVID19 getting stock in from overseas has been a recent challenge, although we have excellent stock forecasting which manages our stock levels really well. We have kept up-to-date with stock during this period, only having a couple of chemical
products short which we bring out from China. We implemented new COVID-19 restrictions such as erecting sneeze guards and serving one customer only at a time at the Trade Desk, and all our customers have been compliant with this. It’s still funny that shaking hands has disappeared - but we’re all probably going to settle in to this ‘new normal’ over time.
“At Waterco we are continuously in the pursuit of reliable water solutions for healthy, safe water environments. We are always looking at innovating and seeking solutions. We invest heavily in trying to bring the best possible products to the industry and I think we’re doing a great job of that at the moment.”
What opportunities does the current climate present to suppliers such as Waterco? Opportunities through the COVID-19 lockdown period has allowed our staff time to learn and train themselves on our Waterco e-learning system in order to better serve our customers. Having the time to educate themselves better has been a huge opportunity for all our staff. As a branch, we really focussed on our online product training (Waterco Advance) and our team went from 40-50% to 90-100% completion, so having that opportunity to study and understand the products gave staff the confidence to sell them better. Finding the time to complete the courses – one being 11 hours in length! – was a real advantage. Our focus is also on providing better customer service, so having this information helps with this objective.
Waterco recently acquired AutoPool – what will this mean for consumers and how will it benefit the industry? The acquisition of AutoPool will benefit our industry as it operates in markets that Waterco wasn’t already in. The two businesses are complementary and bringing us together means that we can attract a new revenue stream. Autopool will retain its own identity, staff and customer base, and will operate as a separate entity.
How do you see the industry pivoting and innovating in the future? I think that there will be a definite push towards going chlorine-free, or getting pool water to be as natural as possible. In any case, lowering chlorine production is a good thing. Automation is another one. Everyone has something that uses automation and how much easier is life when you can turn things on from your phone! How much easier can we get? Fully automated backwashing would mean the end-user only needs to think about pool chemicals. At the end of the day, you’ve got a complete system, then you can just relax and enjoy your pool. At Waterco we are continuously in the pursuit of reliable water solutions for healthy, safe water environments, we are always looking at innovating and seeking better ways to do things. We invest heavily in trying to bring the best possible products to the industry and I think we’re doing a great job of that. We’ve got Climate Care Certification across our core products so we must be doing something right, and we look forward to more opportunities in the future.
AQUAMAGAZINE| LAUNCHEDITIONJULY2020
The only downside to our industry is that it’s seasonal, so the Winter time can seem long, although pools are becoming swimmable for more and more of the year now due to more effective heating solutions. I’ve been with the company for over 10 years in sales, and just over twelve months in my current role.

The prize winning family from Yallambie in Victoria accepting their first batch of free chemicals at the Pool & Spa Centre in Templestowe
When loving your pool is a Win/Win! What began as a light-hearted ‘Easter Staycation’ website promotion in February this year quickly became a two month long ‘Love Your Pool’ competition hosted by SPASAVIC in collaboration with Lo-Chlor. Victorian backyard pool and spa owners responded positively as the world went into lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
SPASAVICTORIA
While promoting the concept of a ‘staycation’ versus a real ‘vacation’ over the Easter period, the SPASAVIC collaboration with Lo-Chlor Chemicals resulted in a competition offering one lucky Victorian pool or spa owner a year’s free supply of swimming pool chemicals.
12
The final prize was awarded to a Yallambie family, whose 6-year-old insisted on a pool party for her birthday in March this year. Their pool had only just been installed, but she was desperate to celebrate in and around it, despite the weather being only 17 degrees. “She just couldn’t wait”, the girl’s mother said. “We hadn’t even landscaped around the pool – but the pool party went ahead and they all had a ball!”.
“This competition reinforced the lifestyle benefits and fantastic family value of backyard pool and spa ownership.”
This family will now be enjoying their backyard pool more than ever over the next twelve months, with a year’s worth of free pool chemicals, thanks to Lo-Chlor Chemicals.
As entries flooded in, images of Victorian families enjoying their backyard pool during isolation were shared far and wide on social media.
SPASAVIC would like to thank all who entered our ‘Love Your Pool’ competition and especially Lo-Chlor Chemicals for their support and generosity.
With heart-warming competition entry statements such as, “Our pool has been the centre of great family gatherings for over 25 years” and “God, we just love our pool”, it reinforced the lifestyle benefits and fantastic family value of backyard pool and spa ownership.
If you’re considering getting a backyard pool or spa, make sure you choose a SPASAVIC member.

Manage business cash flow with insurance premium funding Why is that, and why is managing your business cash flow so important? Your cash position is likely to have peaks and troughs Many businesses are seasonal, with some periods when sales are booming and others where turnover is slow. And even if your level of activity is fairly stable throughout the year, your debtors may sometimes be slow to pay, and operating costs may peak at certain times when you need to purchase inventory or new equipment or pay quarterly or annual bills. Good cash flow planning keeps the wheels turning in all these situations, so it’s important to have a cash flow forecast and constantly monitor your cash position.
Cash flow management helps you make well-timed decisions If you can identify when you will have extra cash available, you could take advantage of shortterm supplier discount offers, early payment concessions or rebates for bulk purchasing. And being able to predict a temporary cash shortage gives you time to plan a sales boost with advertising or incentives, trim your expenses, review stock levels and put additional effort into collecting debts. Business insurance is vital, but annual premiums can disrupt your cash flow Prudent business operators take the advice on possible risks from fire, theft, accidents and public liability claims, and then understand the importance of taking out business insurance to mitigate their exposure. But a hefty annual premium can be difficult to accommodate in your normal monthly cash flow. Many businesses may have insufficient cash reserves or prefer to keep their surplus cash available for the regular demands on working capital.
Insurance Premium Funding lets you pay for the insurance you need in easy monthly instalments There’s no need to be under-insured because the annual premium is unmanageable. We can help you finance your premium via Insurance Premium Funding. Once you’ve chosen an insurance package tailored for your business by your own insurer, the finance provider will pay the annual premium upfront on your behalf. You then repay the loan to the finance provider in affordable monthly instalments. The interest rate is fixed, there are no service fees to pay, and you don’t need to offer your property as security for the loan. Let us help you manage your cash flow without skimping on insurance The extraordinary challenges of the current financial year have taught us the true value of being fully insured.
Visit the AB Phillips website for this and other news articles. Contact the team if you’d like to discuss how you can reduce your exposure to risk, while still retaining your working capital.

If there’s one lesson to be learned in the current challenging business environment, it’s this: businesses that understand the importance of positive cash flow are more likely to survive and prosper.
