Dystopia Fascination is a fashion forward trend complete with a captivating color pallet and bold structured silhouettes. We look to the artistic works of Chris Luckhardt, a photographer, and style conscious fashionistas for vivid inspiration. Structured lines, chic silhouettes, and exaggerated shapes identifies this trend pronouncing it ready for fall. The concept board consists of the overall vision for this trend. Dystopia Fascination is a trend that appeals to the style savvy consumers. With that said, we have included key items that we believe are essential for Fall 2014. These items include the infamous biker jacket, known for its rebel reputation and style status, the sheath dress which is known for the way it contours to the female figure, the corset which is impeccably known for shaping the figure, now worn as a statement piece, and last we included the cargo pant which is ideal for carry extra accessories. The fabric selections were chosen very carefully and meant to be very functional and practical while still sophisticated and chic looking. The color pallet consists of mixed greens, cool blues, calming corals, and dysfunctional darks. The greens tell the story of fall and the wasteland dysfunction of a dystopian society. The cool blues represent a sense of security and confidence, which helps empower fashionistas to confidently wear the trend. Along with the blues and greens, we have incorporated coral into the pallet. Some might say coral is not a fall color, but this trend uses coral as a way to incorporate a bright comforting color in the midst of the dark dingy greens and blues.. These colors not only represent a Dystopian Society but also appeal to the season and silhouette styles seen among the trend. Dystopian Fascination is not only seen as an evolving trend in 2014, but a new way of life. With chic silhouettes, structured lines and a curious color pallet, fashionistas will unite and divulge themselves into this trend. 7

Designers have long understood how color can dramatically affect moods and feelings. Color is an effective way to communicate because colors have universal meaning. When creating a collection it is important to consider the psychology that comes with the hue. Some colors work better than others in specific situations and settings. For dystopia fascination, the color pallet consists of shades of blues, mixed greens, and calming corals. Blues are said to be reliable and responsible. Blue exhibits an inner security and confidence, and can be relied on to take control and do the right thing in difficult times (“The Color Blue”). In a dystopian Pantone 2308 C society where catastrophe is impending, the hue blue is used to calm civilians and take control of their society. Green is the color of balance and harmony. “Green is Pantone 2327 C an emotionally positive color, giving us the ability to love and nurture ourselves and others unconditionally” (“The Color Green”). The coral family can be seen as Pantone 2306 C spontaneous and insightful. It can display, “tenderness and kindness with its empathy and sensitivity. It is a Pantone 2307 C positive color inspiring warm and comforting feelings, and a sense that everything will be okay” (“The Color Pink”). Coral is the perfect hue in a dystopian society, it signifies there is a light at the end of the tunnel and the strong will survive. The color story for this trend exemplifies confidence, nature and comfort, all the while trying to survive in this intimidating environment we occupy.

RUNWAY The end of the world is not the end of high fashion. From Rick Owens and Prabal Gurung to Givenchy and Donna Karan, everyone is taking a page from the dark and moody dystopian looks for fall 2014. The look is tough and edgy, following a sleek silhouette. The staple items include sheath dresses and skeletal pants that can be easily layered upon. The main focal point of the season is outerwear. Toggle coats are lined with wool and hoods embedded with fur to help protect the head. Dominant leather becomes a second skin, taking on a role of its own, resembling an urban warrior. To stay hidden in the shadows the trend sticks to a monochromatic color palette with hints of livelier colors. This trend has been influenced by past designs from the late Alexander McQueen, who followed a futuristic esthetic with sharp edges, eccentric silhouettes, and remarkable accessories. The runway fashion unites the dystopian theme with strong feminine characteristics.

STREET Street fashion for Dystopia Fascination has been largely influenced by the spirit of steam punk and the edge of grunge. With a combination of the two, the millennial generation has taken certain fashions found among the streets, and has created a more individualistic approach to this trend. By taking a look at street fashions, amid bloggers, artists and dooms day junkies, we have found the look to be one that is contemporary with a futuristic flare. Trending on the streets of both New York and California, findings have consisted of sleek leather leggings, harem pants paired with stilettos and biker jackets, oversized hooded capes, jackets lined with fur, and large think knit scarves. Drawing inspiration from the street not only provided silhouette styles, but also different color choices to enhance the look entirely. The street fashion paired with the runway inspiration helps tie the look together entirely.

ART MOVEMENT Art Movement Popular culture is seeing a reemergence of dystopian genre. Numerous films being released in 2013 and 2014 are the most obvious in art right now. It is easy to see how awful a post-apocalyptic world is and be glad you do not live in it. We currently are living thru a seemingly endless war, economic crisis, and high unemployment. This genre of film creates a zeitgeist of doom that stretches across the country. "We live in angstridden times, and so the appeal of these movies is further amplified," said Jamsheed Akrami, a film professor at William Paterson University in New Jersey. "Most of us seem to seek mental relief by drowning ourselves in a sea of doom and gloom for a couple of hours. The experience can be some sort of catharsis” (Harris). The world is changing, and exploiting human fears has become a common theme among Hollywood films. These
forthcoming movies will remain popular because they give the audience a hero to cheer for. Although post-apocalyptic movies are filled with doom, the dashing hero comes to save the day, providing hope for the future. In addition, dystopian photography has amplified. Photographer, Chris Luckhardt goes on urban explorations and brings back, “striking reminders of what happens after we are done using gigantic, multi-million dollar facilities and machines” (Chris). He works to show beauty in destruction and show case forgotten places.

ALL IN THE DETAILS The dystopian look is sleek and utilitarian; garment details are not only for esthetics, but purpose. YKK zippers are prominent detail throughout this style. The exposed zipper trend has received attention in previous seasons, but now it is going to be a more dramatic statement piece to add some edge. Once part of the British Royal Navy's uniform during World War I, toggles will be seen on outerwear, like capes, making it easy to remove or fasten it into place. The buttons are made of strong material like wood, so they are long lasting on the wool they are attached to. Decorative buckles and chains are added to give, ”a cascading effect of molten metal that forms to the movement and curves of the body” (“Arielle”). These details give an air of intimidation, while still being modern. 23
Dystopia Fascination Dystopia Fascination is a trend empowered by existential catastrophe and the end of civilization. This trend not only exists in science fiction but has evolved to include the most elite fashionistas and affluent designs. Enticed by lux goods, fashionable necessities and common wealth, consumers are drawn to this fictional society that has become a reality through the means of fashion. Not only is this trending a new fascination among the style savvy, but it has evolved into a new way of life. With a color pallet to dream about, posh silhouette styles and details for days this trend will become one of the most influential movements of 2014. Once implemented into their wardrobe, consumers will not be able to shy away from this trend, as this is an everlasting fashion. Dystopia Fascination is not only full of rich colors, sleek lines, exaggerated shapes and epic catastrophe, but allows the believers to realize this fictional society can become a reality.
