Teachers’ Guild Awards TEACHERS’ GUILD OF NSW WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY AWARD As part of World Teachers’ Day, each year the Teachers’ Guild of New South Wales asks schools to honour outstanding staff members who have made an exceptional contribution to their school in advancing the education profession beyond their own classrooms. This year, we congratulate Stephanie Howard and Brian McCowen for receiving the Teachers’ Guild of NSW World Teachers’ Day Award. We also congratulate Megan Smith, a finalist in the Teachers’ Guild of NSW Annual Research Awards. Well done to all three of these well-deserving staff at SPCC!

Welcome Gifts During Term 4, our Executive and College Leadership Teams personally delivered welcome gifts to all new Kindergarten and Year 7 students commencing at the College in 2022. Some students may feel nervous about starting school, or starting at a new school, so it was wonderful to be able to encourage them personally, and share our joy as we anticipate their arrival. We look forward to welcoming all of our new students into our SPCC community next year!

Academic Mentoring Our Academic Mentoring program provides connection, care and individual support for our Year 12 students. Students meet regularly with a member of staff, who acts as an academic mentor, helping them to set goals, strategise and take ownership of their own learning in the lead up to the HSC. In the words of some of our students, academic mentoring “helps keep me accountable in my studies and was helpful in creating a study plan”, and helps “manage stress and planning” during the busy HSC year. We are currently in the initial stages of the program for our new Year 12 students and mentors, and are so grateful for all of the staff and students involved!

40th Anniversary Logo

As part of our 40th Anniversary next year, we invited students from all St Philip’s schools to submit a design for the SPCC 40th Anniversary logo competition. Congratulations to two of our SPCC Newcastle students, Vivienne and Bastian, who were the winners of the competition. Mr Graeme Irwin, our founding Principal, had a special visit with the students at the College to present their awards in person. Well done to all students who entered the competition, and we look forward to seeing the entries displayed during our home coming week in 2022! 15

SPCC Herald

The Advanced Stage 1 English class published a newspaper they had been working on for 3 weeks. There was lots of excitement about the big reveal! Here is an update from class members Moses Morrison and Emerson McPherson: This was our first attempt at making a newspaper and we are really proud of it. We have enjoyed making the newspaper including quotes, photographs and even a crossword. We learnt lots about how newspapers work, how we need to write in a paper, and how much work it is. We couldn’t imagine doing a weekly or daily paper! On Thursday, we delivered some printed copies of the SPCC Herald around the school. We visited Mrs O’Dea, Mrs Lee and Mr Wellham in their offices. When we arrived as a class we chanted “Extra, extra read all about it, we made a newspaper and there’s no doubt about it!”. We then went out in pairs and delivered it to some Jr School staff members. We each took a copy home and shared a copy with some school friends. We placed copies in the library and the Barracks Café, but people still wanted more! The students in our class have reflected on making the newspaper and what we could improve for issue two, and also, what we enjoyed. We all agreed that one of the bests parts about making this paper was seeing the excitement and joy when we got to share it.
