Art at ramsey

Art at Ramsey is a well-established, highlyacclaimed art fair. This juried show features original fine arts and fine crafts made by the exhibiting artists. It is held in conjunction with Grand Meander, the Grand Avenue Business Association’s holiday promotion. Art at Ramsey is sponsored by Ramsey Middle School, Community Education and Artists’ Circle. Preparing four-year-old children for school success. Children need to be four by September 1 and live in Saint Paul. Most schools have admission priorities to serve children who are English Language Learners, qualify for free or reduced meals, or receive Early Childhood Special Education services. Classes are 5 days per week, 2.5 to 3 hours in the morning or afternoon. Parent education and support is available during this year-long transition to kindergarten. Second Harvest Heartland Volunteer Opportunity

As the Upper Midwest's largest hunger relief organization organization, Second Harvest Heartland distributes boxes of groceries each month to over 9,000 low-income seniors and mothers with children. All 9,000 boxes are packed by volunteers on our assembly line! You can be one of those volunteers. This service opportunity requires standing for approximately three hours, with occasional breaks, and placing an item in the boxes as they travel on a conveyor belt. Learn the basic strokes and proper breathing techniques. (Similar to American Red Cross Levels 1-3.)

Adult Intermediate – Stroke Development

Swimmers work to improve front and back crawl and increase endurance. Focus will be on technique and stroke refinement. Swimmers will also be introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers must be able to swim 50 yards (two lengths of the pool) without stopping.

Adult Intermediate – Endurance

Swimmers work on coordination and refinement of all strokes and increase their distances. Swimmers must be able to swim 100 yards (four lengths of the pool) without stopping.

Adult Advanced

Work on all strokes but emphasis will be on endurance and distance swimming (great for triathlon training). Swimmers must be able to swim 500 yards (20 lengths of the pool) without stopping.

American Red Cross Swim Lessons (Ages 5-14) Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills

Water Walking

Experience a full range of functional walking-through-water exercises to encourage core stability, balance, and preventing falls.

For children 5 years and older. Learn basic personal water safety information and skills to help participants feel comfortable in the water. Included are supported floats, glides, and combined strokes on front and back.

Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Water Yoga

Swimmers must be comfortable in the water and have completed Level 1 or have equivalent skills. Included are water safety skills and unsupported floats, glides, and combined strokes on front and back.

Discover ways to increase your coordination, flexibility and muscular endurance with innovative "yoga-like" moves in the water.

Level 3 – Stroke Development

Camps and Trainings Competitive Swim Camp

Swimmers build on front and back crawl and are introduced to deep water skills. Included are water safety skills, survival floats, treading water, kneeling dives, dolphin kick, scissors kick, and elementary backstroke.

Level 4 – Stroke Improvement

Swimmers work to improve front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke, and increase endurance. Included are water safety skills, open turns, standing dives, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke.

Level 5 – Stroke Refinement

Swimmers work on coordination and refinement of all strokes (front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and sidestroke) and increase their distances. Included are water safety skills, shallow-angle dives, surface dives, sculling, and flip turns.

Level 6 – Personal Water Safety

Swimmers work to refine strokes so they can swim with more ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances. Included are water safety skills, turns for all strokes, surface dives, survival swimming, and self-rescue techniques while clothed.

Water Exercise (Ages 15 and up) Aqua Treaders

Combine the basics of swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo, and deep water vertical exercises into a super calorie-burning workout. Participants must be able to tread water vertically in deep water with no floatation device. Help alleviate pain and reduce stress and fatigue while strengthening postural muscles and building endurance in preparation for labor and delivery. Recommended for women at least 12 weeks pregnant. Doctor's approval required.

Swimnastics

This healthful and relaxing activity includes exercises for stretching, agility and a light aerobic workout that is done in shallow water.

Water Pilates

Swimmers concentrate on swimming with more ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances with an emphasis on training techniques. Work on starts, turns, streamlining, and stroke drills. Class sections available for swimmers in grades K-2, grades 3-5, and grades 6-8. All swimmers must be able to swim one length of the pool without stopping.

Lifeguard Training

Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding for pools, First Aid, CPR, and AED. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. Students must be 15 years or older by the last day of class and be able to pass a skills pre-test. Participants who do not pass the pre-test will be issued a refund minus a $15 processing fee and will not be able to continue in the course. Certification will be issued after successful completion of written exams and skill tests; if participants do not pass the course, neither certification nor refund will be issued. Swim Instructor Assistant Training

Learn how to assist swim instructors in teaching swim lessons. Candidates must be 14 years or older, demonstrate a strong sense of maturity and responsibility, and be competent swimmers. Participants must pass a skills pre-test conducted on the first day. Participants unable to pass the skills pre-test will be refunded the course fee minus a $10 processing fee. After successful completion of the course, participants will be qualified to apply for an assistant position with Community Education. Prenatal Water Exercise

Tone up your body and improve cardiovascular fitness while having fun exercising in the water to music. Toning will be emphasized.

This is a nationally-ranked program, coached by conscientious and hard-working coaches. You will learn swim skills which include dance and acrobatic movements accomplished on the surface and underwater. Participation in this activity requires a placement tryout and acceptance to a team level of your ability. The Office of Alternative Education (OAE) Family Planetarium We offer instructional programming after school and during summer to students in grades K-12. Extended Day for Learning (EDL) and Summer Session provide focused, alternative learning opportunities that support achievement, so that all students experience educational success and graduate to something great! Elementary programs include academic support in reading and math, plus enrichment that may include instrumental music. Middle school programs have engaging curriculum in reading and math (Smart Math online program), plus enrichment. High school programs will offer credit recovery classroom and online opportunities at Evening High School and the East Side Learning Hub @ Harding. Other high school programs may include ELL and ACT test prep offered at various high school sites. The Basics: • Students must be 15 years of age by the last day of class. • Courses consist of State-required 30 hours of classroom and six hours of Behind-the-Wheel instruction. The classroom prepares students for the written permit test. Upon completion of the classroom and obtaining a driver’s permit, Behind the-Wheel instruction will be scheduled by the teachers with the individual students. The Behind-the Wheel component prepares students for the road test. • Students are required to have their permit for six months and to be 16 years of age before they are eligible to take the road test for a driver’s license. • After successful completion of classroom instruction, the student has 18 months to finish the Behind-the-Wheel portion of the program. • Refunds minus a $50 fee will be issued upon request for cancellation. Refunds will not be issued after one year from the start date of classroom instruction. Fee: $330 Payment plans: 1) Full payment with application or 2) $165 with application plus $165 before Enrollment Card is issued. Registration not available online. Complete a registration form (on page 63) and mail it with a check or credit card number (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) to the address of the Community Education Office that is taking registration for the class. See page 60 for Community Education Offices. If paying by check, your place is confirmed when payment is received (make checks payable to ISD# 625).

In Person

Visit any Community Education Office 9:00 a.m.3:00 p.m. If paying with cash, please have exact amount. See page 60 for Community Education Offices.

Cancellations

Saint Paul Public Schools Community Education reserves the right to cancel classes due to lack of enrollment or emergencies.

Refunds

• Refunds minus a $5 processing fee will only be issued if requested three (3) business days prior to the start of the first day of class. No refunds will be given after a class has started. • For classes and tours that have a published cancellation deadline, no refunds or credits will be issued after the specified dates. (For tour refund policy, see page 38.) • Full refunds or credits are issued if Community Education cancels a class or tour, or the class or tour is already filled.

Closings Due to Weather

In case of bad weather, tune in to local media – broadcast, print and online for information on school closures or check the district’s website at www.spps.org for the most current updates. Classes are not held when schools are closed due to the weather.

UCare Discounts

All UCare members may take up to a $15 discount per class on most classes offered in this catalog. If a class is less than $15, the member may take the class free of charge. UCare for Seniors is now limited to one class/ event per year. Members will need to include their UCare ID number when registering. UCare registration is not available online.
